The holiday season has been good to the Bendigo Spirit. After collecting two critical wins last weekend against the West Coast Waves and Adelaide Lightning, the Spirit has elevated itself to third place on the WNBL ladder with an 8-5 record through 10 rounds of the season. With one game left on the slate before the holiday break, nothing would serve as a better Christmas present for the team than a win over the Townsville Fire to ensure a third place standing going into 2011. Guard Kristi Harrower picked up player of the week honours for Round 10 after a successful weekend that saw her put the game into overtime against the Waves with a three-pointer at the buzzer. Harrower finished with 17 points, seven assists and six rebounds against the West Coast before putting up an equally strong 17 points, 10 assists and five rebounds in the team’s win in Adelaide. With Harrower finding her proper form, the Spirit appears to be even more dangerous as they find themselves in good position to earn a finals berth. The team has also taken full advantage of playing four of their past five games at home, losing only to Bulleen during that stretch. The schedule appears to get more challenging following tonight’s game against the Fire, though, as Bendigo takes their home court for the last time until late January as they play three consecutive road games followed by a bye week when play resumes after the break. For now, though, all focus turns to the Fire, a talented team but one also that has struggled to find consistency on the court. The north Queensland based team has recorded a win against top-tier Dandenong but has also suffered numerous

disappointing defeats. At 4-8, Townsville sits just eighth on the ladder. Veteran Jo Hill leads the Fire, averaging 13.8 points per contest. Amy Lewis and Rachel Flanagan also score more than 13 points per game. While the Fire defeated the Rangers at New Projects Australia Stadium in Round 4, the only other team that Townsville has managed to conquer is the lowly AIS, whom they’ve defeated three times already this season. No matter the opponent, though, the Spirit will continue to focus on improving their own form, knowing that if they play up to their potential, the results will follow. After a slow start last weekend against Adelaide, Bendigo recognized that they may have been fortunate to still pull out the win, recovering in the second half to avoid falling victim to an upset. Knowing the importance of stringing together four complete quarters against any opponent in the WNBL, the Spirit should have plenty of motivation to get themselves an early Christmas present and some well deserved time off for the holidays. Prediction: The Spirit gets off to a hot start, keeping the Fire at a distance to end 2010 on a high note.
