GAME PREVIEW

The last time the Bendigo Bank Spirit faced the Canberra Capitals, it was in last year’s preliminary final as each team looked to clinch its spot in the Grand Final.

Club stalwarts Nicole Hunt, Jessica Bibby and Carly Wilson also average over 11 points per game but will need to see their production increase to resurrect their season.

With the hosts welcoming the Capitals to Bendigo Stadium on Friday night at 7:30 p.m., the rematch also arrives with increased importance as both sides find themselves in dire need of a win to turn their season around.

The Spirit also must see its impact players step up as it looks to regain the cohesiveness and team chemistry that helped them achieve its third-place finish last season.

After losing at home in Round 5 against Adelaide, the Spirit fell to 2-4 on the season and could face a long road back to finals contention with another early season loss. Faced again with the prospect of playing without floor leader Kristi Harrower who also missed last week’s game due to an Achilles strain, the Spirit will look for a more consistent effort across the board or else face falling further down the ladder. Despite the Spirit’s slow start, it’s the Capitals that enter the game as the shock of the season with the perennial powerhouse sitting eighth on the ladder through five rounds, well out of the early-season finals picture. At 1-6, Canberra’s one win came against Logan in Round 3 while it has lost disappointing games against Bulleen and Adelaide and fallen twice to Townsville and Dandenong. Hurt by the departures of Suzy Batkovic (Adelaide) and the loss of starting forward Michelle Cosier to a hip injury, the Capitals have looked a different team than the one that has one four WNBL Championships in the past six years. Still, the Caps lineup packs the punch to compete with any team in the league. Opal Marianna Tolo leads the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 12.1 points and 10.9 rebounds per game.

Coach Bernie Harrower has stressed the importance of playing together as a team, something that was apparent in the team’s win at Bulleen in Round 2 but has deserted it at times in recent losses to Sydney and Adelaide. Recapturing that high-level of team play could be the key for the Spirit to earn key wins until Harrower is able to return from injury and get back into the finals picture. While Canberra ultimately won last year’s finals contest, two very different teams enter Friday’s match-up with the Spirit hoping to get revenge against the Capitals and get its season back on track.

It’s the battle of the two undefeated sides in Sydney Uni and Townsville, and the two winless sides in West Coast and the AIS, going head-tohead when Round Six tips off. The first game of the round sees the West Coast Waves face the AIS on Friday night. Both are winless this year and will be hoping that this is their night. The AIS should be buoyed by their ability to stay with the unbeaten Sydney Uni side until after halftime last weekend. While West Coast made some hardcalls on certain players before their match last week, giving an opportunity for some younger players to step up. Waves forward Rohanee Cox averages nine rebounds agame and with 24 points last week will be key in this one. Friday night also sees a match-up between two more sides desperate for a victory, when the Canberra Capitals head to Bendigo to face the Spirit. Bendigo were embarrassed after their poor showing in their 100th WNBL match last weekend, but with Kristi Harrower expected to miss again, things don’t get any easier. Canberra fell to Dandenong last weekend, another loss for the perennial finalists tally. Marianna Tolowas the one shining light, and now leads the league with10.9 rebounds per game, and 3.1 blocks per game. The Dandenong Rangers face the Adelaide Lightning on Saturday afternoon, in what should be a fiercely contested match-up. Both sides had strong wins in Round Five, however the Lightning also fell to the Boomers on the back-end of their Victorian road double-header. Both sides have only lost twice and boast some of the season’s top statistical performers, including four of the topten scorers in the league. Adelaide’s Suzy Batkovic(21.4 ppg) and Abby Bishop(17.6 ppg), and Dandenong’s Kathleen MacLeod (19.3 ppg) and Jenna O’Hea (17ppg) are electrifying in action.

Saturday night also brings us the battle of the two undefeated sides when the Sydney Uni Flames meet the Townsville Fire. The matchup of the night pits imports Amy Denson of the Flames against Shanavia Dowdell of the Fire, both players topten in the league for points and rebounds per game Olympians Belinda Snell and Alicia Poto of the Flames are second and third respectively in assists per game, so twotime defensive player of the year and captain of the Fire Rachael Flanagan will have her hands full in what should be a fantastic contest. The Canberra Capitals are back at home on Sunday afternoon to face the West Coast Waves in their second game of the weekend, while West Coast are also in their second road game of the week. Canberra should be too strong at home, but on form it may be a close run contest. Tolo stepped up for the Capitals last week, Hunt the week before and Wilson the week before that, but like the Waves, who are led by Melissa Marsh and Rohanee Cox, they need to all catch fire together to ensure the win. The final game of the round sees the Dandenong Rangers travel cross-town to face Bulleen in a re-match of their spiteful and thrilling Round Four clash. The Rangers continue to grow in confidence as a team, with Kathleen MacLeod leading the league in assists with 7.5 per game, to go with 19.3 points per game. Bulleen have been doing enough to get by in their recent victories, but Tom Maher will have them raring to go after their near-loss in Round Four. Bulleen rarely lose at home, but with a crowd that includes supporters from both teams and a fired up Rangers side keen to atone, anything could happen..

BENDIGO vs ADELAIDE

On the back of a strong second quarter and another impressive game from the inside duo of Abby Bishop and Suzy Batkovic, the Adelaide Lightning held off the Kristi Harrower-less Bendigo Spirit to win 81-72. Leading by as many as 22 points in the third quarter, the Lightning held off a persistent Spirit side playing without its court-leader who sat out with an Achilles injury to hold on for the nine point win. Bishop top-scored for Adelaide with 20 points while Batkovic added 17 points and 12 rebounds as the new-look side improved to 5-1 on the season. Deanna Smith picked up the scoring slack for the Spirit, leading the team with 27 points. She found little support, though, as leading scorer Tess Madgen struggled with early foul trouble while finishing with just eight points. Guard Kelly Wilson chipped in 11 points and four assists. The Spirit cut the lead to just seven points through a flurry of made baskets and free throws and had the ball with just over a minute left down by seven but were unable to close the deficit any further after import Chelsea Aubry was missed on a mid-range jumper. Bendigo drops to 2-4 on the season and now faces a must-win game next weekend against Canberra next Friday. The visitors led 24-20 at the first break with both teams time in the lead. A quick start by the Spirit saw them hold a slim lead until Bishop scored a lay-up midway through the quarter to give the Lightning its first lead at 12-10. Smith answered for the Spirit with three of her 10 first quarter points when she was fouled on a lay-up and converted the ensuing free-throw.

After Spirit centre Gabe Richards picked up her second personal foul, Adelaide took advantage inside with Bishop and Batkovic combining for 16 points in the period. The momentum continued for the Lightning in the second quarter as guard Georgia Minear scored seven quick points to extend the lead to 12 at 39-27 with just over three minutes left before halftime. Bendigo struggled with foul trouble throughout the half with both Wilson and Madgen collecting their third fouls as the lead ballooned to 15 points on Jenni Screen’s layup in transition. Marino connected on a three to push the lead to 16 before Heather Oliver’s jumper made it 49-35 Adelaide at halftime. Bendigo found trouble scoring in the third as the Lightning lead increased to 60-38 on Lewis’ layup. The Spirit found an late as Smith hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to cut the Adelaide lead to 13 at 62-49 heading into the fourth. The Spirit continued its push, outscoring Adelaide 23-19 in the fourth as to cut into the deficit before the Lightning maintained its lead until the final buzzer. Adelaide now face a quick turnaround as they travel to Melbourne to play Bulleen Sunday afternoon while the Spirit is forced to regroup heading into next week’s rematch of last year’s Final.
