GAME PREVIEW
The Bendigo Bank Spirit welcomes the Bulleen Boomers in a midweek clash scheduled alongside the Australian Secondary Schools basketball championships taking place this week in Bendigo. After defeating the AIS in Canberra on Sunday, the Spirit faces a quick turnaround as it takes on the fourth placed Boomers, a team Bendigo defeated 93-81 in Melbourne in Round 2. Another win against the defending Premiers would move the Spirit one step closer to a top five position at the midpoint of the 2011/12 WNBL campaign. Against the AIS, the Spirit held the young side to its lowest total scoring output in history in a 71-30 victory. Facing the 6-3 Boomers, a similar defensive effort will be needed to limit the potent offensive attack led by centre Liz Cambage and point guard Sam Richards. Last year’s MVP, Cambage has returned from her debut WNBA season with the Tulsa Shock to average 22.8 points and 9.6 rebounds per game while Richards has slotted in seamlessly to the point guard spot, scoring 15.8 points and dishing out more than four assists per game. Versatile forward Rachel Jarry is equally dangerous, contributing over 15 points and nine rebounds per contest. The Round 2 clash between the two teams was an offensive showcase, with the Spirit notching its highest scoring output on the season to win at the Veneto Club for the first time in team history.
The Spirit was nearly unstoppable in the first half, entering the changerooms leading 57-48. Bulleen fought back in the third, though, to cut the deficit to one heading into the fourth before Bendigo regained its form to clinch the win. Gabe Richards and Tess Madgen scored 25 points each to lead the Spirit while Kristi Harrower chipped in 19 points and seven assists. Madgen currently leads the team in scoring, pouring in 15.7 points per game but is joined closely by Deanna Smith, Richards and Harrower, giving the Spirit a balanced offensive attack. Coach Bernie Harrower knows his team is never short on scoring options on offence, but has repeatedly stressed that it will be the team’s defence that lifts them into a top five spot on the ladder. Harrower will hope that the recent win against the AIS will be a sign of things to come on the defensive end as the team looks to turn things around from a rollercoaster first half of the season. At 5-5, the Spirit has three straight home games before the Christmas break. Securing its third consecutive win against the Boomers would go a long way in showing that it belongs in any finals discussion around the league.

Halfway through the regular season and only three of the ten WNBL clubs sit with losing records, when Round 10 tips off. The first game of the round sees the Bulleen Boomers travel to Bendigo to face the Spirit on Wednesday night. Bulleen are coming off a thrilling loss to the Sydney Uni Flames, while Bendigo registered a historic win against the AIS in their last game, holding the Institute to just 30 points for the match.
The AIS were held to just 30 total points last week, one game after their very first win of the season, and will be hoping an immediate opportunity to respond to the thrashing will be a positive thing. Bendigo sit mid-ladder and know that all games are vital in the context of such a close run season. The Logan Thunder travel to Adelaide to face the ladderleading Lightning on Saturday night.
The Spirit have a short turnaround having played on Sunday, but they know they have the game to beat the reigning champs, having won their last two meetings.
One day after facing the Waves, the Thunder meet the 9-2 Lightning, led by league leading scorer Suzy Batkovic, who averages 25 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.
The Logan Thunder travel to face the West Coast Waves on Friday night.
The Thunder will also need to be aware of the form of Abby Bishop, who is averaging 16.3 points and 8.9 rebounds per game for the season.
Both sides were defeated last weekend, but the Waves will take some comfort in the fact that they played so well against Logan last time they met. At 5-4 on the season, the Thunder can’t let games like this slip, and behind the outstanding recent play of Cayla Francis, who leads the league with 10.8 rebounds per game, should be too strong. The Sydney Uni Flames are away from home again this week, travelling to Canberra to face the Capitals on Saturday. The Flames split their weekend match-ups, winning a thriller against Bulleen, where they lost Eva Afeaki to a dislocated knee-cap, before falling to the Rangers. The size of Canberra’s Marianna Tolo and Brigitte Ardossi appear to be the only thing that would worry the Flames, who are getting an MVP type performance from star Belinda Snell in every game. She is currently averaging 20.3 points and 5.5 assists per game. Less than one week after holding them to the lowest total score in their WNBL history, the Bendigo Spirit meet the AIS on Saturday.
Saturday night also sees the Dandenong Rangers make the long trek to Townsville to face the Fire. The Rangers currently sit with a record of 7-4, one game back from the Fire who are 8-4, but know they had the best of Townsville in their meeting in Round Seven. Both teams boast players who have starred this season with Shanavia Dowdell of the Fire and Kathleen MacLeod of the Rangers two of the league’s best all year. The final game of the round sees the Bulleen Boomers back at home to face the AIS on Sunday afternoon. Having played the Bendigo Spirit the night before, the AIS have less than 24 hours to prepare for the reigning champs, in a game that celebrates Bulleen head coach Tom Maher’s 300th game as a WNBL coach. The Boomers are full of former-AIS graduates now tearing up the league, giving the youngsters a glimpse of what lies beyond their time at the Institute.
