GAME PREVIEW
The Bendigo Spirit welcomes the Fire to Bendigo stadium Saturday night looking to hand the visitors its second straight defeat and gain revenge over Townsville’s sevenpoint victory over Bendigo in Round 1. Heading into the 2011/12 WNBL campaign, nearly every team in the league was active in off-season recruiting as they looked to take advantage of several Australian Opals returning from Europe in preparation for the 2012 London Olympics.
The side has also seen increased production from new-recruit Deanna Smith who has led the team in scoring the past two games while averaging 14.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per contest. Tess Madgen leads the team in scoring at just over 15 points per game. For Harrower, the game presents another chance to go against a point guard that’s recently been added to the Opals squad in Rachel Flanagan.
Teams were largely applauded for their additions and many predicted that the stronger teams promised to make the league the most competitive it’s been in years.
After suiting up for the green and gold for the first time in the Oceania Qualifying Series, Flanagan has averaged 8.4 points, 4.6 assists and 4.1 rebounds for the Fire.
Despite the signings of multiple past and present Opals for other teams, though, no side so far has improved as much as the newlook Townsville Fire.
Impressive import Shanavia Dowdell leads the team in scoring and rebounding, recording 18.3 points and 8.7 rebounds in her inaugural WNBL season.
Under the guidance of new head coach and former Canberra assistant Chris Lucas, the Fire has surprised many as it’s raced up the ladder, losing its first game just last week against undefeated Sydney.
The American power-forward has proven a handful for opposing teams, shooting over 58 percent from the field. Recruit Jessica Foley has also found form, averaging nearly 16 points per game.
Bendigo scrapped its way to an important win in Round 6 against Canberra to improve its record to 3-4, good for seventh place on the ladder.
Bendigo’s win last week over Canberra didn’t earn it any style points, but the Spirit did show signs of improved effort on defence and the return of Harrower, both of which will be crucial if it is to defeat the much-improved Fire and climb back into the finals picture.
A win against the 6-1 Fire would not only bring the Spirit back to even on the season, but could also potentially lift it back into the top five. Against Canberra, the Spirit was bolstered by the return of Kristi Harrower last week after she missed the previous game with an Achilles injury. Coming off the bench and playing decreased minutes, Harrower was still able to impact the game, hitting a clutch three-point shot in the fourth. For the year, the Opal has averaged 14.2 points, 4.5 assists and 4.3 rebounds at the helm for the Spirit.

BENDIGO vs CANBERRA
In a desperation game for both teams, the Bendigo Bank Spirit defeated the Canberra Capitals 63-59, avenging the team’s loss to the Caps in last year’s preliminary final. Leading by 14 points at halftime, the Spirit held off a resilient Canberra to secure the important win that keeps Bendigo within reach of the top-half of the ladder and adds another disappointing loss for last year’s runners-up. Deanna Smith top-scored for the Spirit with 19 points while adding five rebounds as Bendigo improves to 3-4 on the season. The Capitals were led by Natalie Porter and Nicole Hunt who scored 15 points each, but it was not enough as they fall to ninth on the ladder at 1-7. Hunt also recorded six rebounds but also added nine of the team’s 23 turnovers. Marianna Tolo scored nine points and pulled down 14 rebounds. The Spirit controlled the first half, ramping up its defensive pressure to hold the Capitals to just eight first quarter points, heading into the second frame up 17-8. The lead increased to 25-10 after Tess Madgen scored a lay-up with just over five minutes remaining in the quarter. A quick run cut the lead to 25-17 but the Spirit answered back, outscoring the Capitals 10-4 to enter the locker rooms up 35-21. After struggling to score in the first half, Canberra outscored the Spirit 25-13 to cut the lead to two entering the final frame before the teams played mostly even until the final buzzer. After trailing the entire game, Canberra charged back to take its first lead of the game when Marianna Tolo scored inside at the start of the fourth to put the Caps ahead 50-48.
Switching to a zone defence in the second half, the Capitals were able to limit the Spirit to just four-of-23 shooting from distance to get back into the game. Bendigo shot just 31 percent from the field but was also able to hold Canberra to just 34 percent shooting from the field. After losing the lead, the Spirit answered back, holding a 55-52 lead with under four minutes remaining when Spirit guard Kelly Wilson made a lay-up and Kristi Harrower followed on the next possession with a 3-point shot to stretch the lead to eight, forcing Canberra to call timeout and igniting the Spirit crowd. Harrower, who was questionable to play due to an Achilles strain and came off the bench for the Spirit, finished with 12 points and four rebounds in just over 20 minutes of play. Hunt answered with a three of her own out of the timeout to make it 60-55 with one minute left but the Spirit were able to make enough free throws at the end to secure the much needed win. Canberra returns home to face the West Coast Waves on Sunday while the Spirit look to continue to improve its record next week against the Townsville Fire at home.
