GAME PREVIEW
A week after nearly scoring a critical victory against one of the league’s two remaining undefeated teams in Round 4, the Bendigo Bank Spirit faces a near must-win game in Round 5 if it is to remain within striking distance of the league’s leaders. Once again, that game comes against a highly-touted opponent expected to factor strongly into the championship race come finals time. As team’s around the country are finding out each week, though, such is the challenge in this year’s WNBL competition in which nearly every team has benefited from high-profile recruiting and increased talent levels. When the 2-3 Spirit welcome the 4-1 Adelaide Lightning to Bendigo Stadium Saturday night at 7:30 p.m., coach Bernie Harrower’s side will be hoping that homecourt advantage is enough to get his team over the line and avoid a repeat of Round 4. Last week’s two-point defeat in Sydney ended the team’s two game winning streak and dropped the Spirit to sixth on the early-season ladder, just behind the Bulleen Boomers and Dandenong Rangers. While it’s still early days in the 2011/12 campaign, the Spirit can’t risk dropping further on the ladder and are show it belongs in any finals discussion around the league. Defeating the vastly-improved Lightning, whose only loss also came against the Flames, could go a long way in improving the team’s confidence as it plays its first of three straight home games in November. Adelaide brings a much different team to the court this season as only point guard Angela Marino remains from last year’s squad that finished near the bottom of the ladder.
New head coach Peter Buckle successfully recruited Opals Suzy Batkovic and Abby Bishop to anchor the team’s front-line. Both have had an immediate impact with Batkovic leading the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 22.2 points and 11.0 boards per game. Bishop has also added 18.8 points and 8.0 rebounds while Marino is third on the team in scoring at 14.0 points per game while dishing out 5.0 assists per contest. Add in solid guard Amy Lewis and former Spirit player Toni Edmondson and the Lightning quickly became a hot pick to win the championship. The Spirit had no trouble putting points on the board against the Flames, but struggled to contain Sydney’s offensive attack, ultimately costing it the chance to secure the road win. Tess Madgen, Kristi Harrower and Deanna Smith all put up impressive numbers on offence as the team scored 79 points in the loss. The Spirit will hope that the offensive production continues while its defensive pressure increases to slow down the Lightning’s potent attack. Stretches of last week’s game proved the Spirit can contend with any team in the league. To get back into the finals picture and get back to .500, it will have to show that it can maintain that level of play for four quarters against the Lightning.

Townsville and Sydney Unilook to stay undefeated, while Logan and Canberra try desperately tohalt their losing streaks whenRound Five tips off. The first game of the round sees the Logan Thunder travelto Canberra to meet the AIS on Friday night. The Thunder will be hoping to halt their three-game losing streak and get back to their seasonopening form against the students. The AIS has found a way to stay competitive through patches this season, but have not put four quarters together. Sara Blicavs had a great game against the Lightning last round, but with Cayla Francis averaging close to 15 points and 11 rebounds per game, the AIS will again have their hands full. The other Friday night game sees the top of the table Townsville Fire take their unbeaten 5-0 record to the home of the West Coast Waves. Townsville were too strong for Logan in their all-Queensland clash last week, and will be looking to continue that form against the winless Waves. Fire import Shanavia Dowdell leads her team with 17.2 points per game, but just as exciting for Fire fans is the return of Mia Newley, who slotted seamlessly back into the line-up last week Former Fire star Rohanee Cox goes head-to-head with her old side in this one. The Canberra Capitals host the Dandenong Rangers on Saturday night, desperate to pick up their second win of the year after letting one slip against the Adelaide Lightning in Round Four. Much like the Rangers did against the Boomers last week, the Capitals led Adelaide late, but were overrun. This game sets up a great match-up between Canberra’s Nicole Hunt and Dandenong’s Kathleen MacLeod, who leads the league in assists, as well as averaging more than 18 points per game. The game will also see two
of the league’s best shot-blockers go headto-head as Canberra’s Marianna Tolo battles Louella Tomlinson. Things don’t get any easier for the AIS in their second game of the weekend, as they meet the undefeated Sydney Uni Flames on Saturday night. The Flames have met all with star players Belinda Snell, Amy Denson and Alicia Poto orchestrating five-straight wins. Statistically they also lead the league with Denson equal-high scorer with an average of 22.2 points per game and Belinda Snell equal-high in assists with 7.2 per game. Both the Flames and Fire play winless sides this round, so we may have to wait another week before they are separated. After a heart-breaking last minute loss to the Flames last round, the Bendigo Spirit are back on their home floor on Saturday night against the Adelaide Lightning. Having felt they let one slip away in Round Four, Bendigo will be determined to not do the same this week against an Adelaide outfit facing their second-straight week on the road. The Spirit have five players that average double figures in points, and all will need to be firing this week against league equal-leading scorer Suzy Batkovic. The final game of the round sees the Bulleen Boomers face the Adelaide Lightning. It will be nine days since Bulleen’s cross-town clash against the Rangers and look for them to try to exploit the back-to-back games related fatigue of the Lightning in this one. Bulleen stormed home in Round Four to knock off the Rangers, with their form players Liz Cambage, Rachel Jarry and Samantha Richards leading the way. One player who has gone under the radar this year is Alice Kunek who averages 8.8 rebounds per game, which leads her team. This should be a fierce contest as the veteran Batkovic uses all of her tricks against the young Boomers.
