During the late 1920s there were 5,000 of them in Newark, NY and Baltimore, MD alone, but who has ever heard of an Indian taxi? Photos of these vehicles must exist in old family albums or are stacked in dusty drawers of historical societies, but the only ones I’ve discovered were in the archives of the Indian Motocycle Company in Springfield, MA.
One reprinted photo appeared in the in-house promotional magazine, but all other references seem to have disappeared like an Apache covering his tracks. These, and others, are the lost Indians. Looking like a piece of rattan (wicker) patio furniture mounted on springs and a tubular frame, the first sidecar was built by Alex Levedahl in 1902 and fitted to an Indian motorcycle. Ironically it was offered to the public in 1903 under the Thor brand

The Tri-Car and Van, along with a tandem seat for the 2 ¼ hp Indian Roadster, were presented as being part of a modular concept “six vehicles embraced in one.” The Tri-Car and Van soon disappeared from the company’s sales brochures, but the introduction of the more powerful V-twin motorcycle in 1907 made these attachments even more popular. Sadly I know of no surviving examples, but extant personal photos from the pre-war era suggest that a large number were produced. In the Wheels Through Time museum resides an unusual 1913 Indian. Although Dale Walksler has labeled it as a prototype, it bears little relationship to the mechanical style of Oscar Hedstrom. It’s fitted with numerous non-standard parts and redundant systems—two Splitdorf magnetos, two

In Search Of Lost Indians Continued from Previous Page... kickstarters, two decompression releases, two starter levers, two stands, two tool boxes, two fuel lines with shut off vales, dual brake and clutch controls, and dual exhaust—and, the final clue, a “B”-size (for bus) acetylene tank fitted to the
rear rack to fuel the headlamp. This factory-built machine was obviously designed for an endurance feat, perhaps for the series held in the deserts of the Southwest beginning on October 31, 1913 or initially designed for E.G. “Cannonball” Baker’s transcontinental attempt. (The first 1914 TwoSpeed Tourist Standard electric model motorcycles off the assembly line [in May 1913] were rushed to
a San Francisco dealer by rail to allow to set out on his record-setting transcontinental journey.) We may never know. Hendee Manufacturing went into the sidecar business in 1913 and began marketing them with the 1914 line up of motorcycles. Then came WWI. It was the use of motorcycle sidecars as ambulances, machine gun mounts, courier vehicles, and ammunition transport that proved how versatile three-wheeled vehicles could be.

The Indian Parcel Car became one of the first post- Patrol, both introduced during the last two months war production models offered for 1920. of 1927. The 1920s saw side cars designed as taxis and all manner of specialty delivery vehicles. The Indian Motocycle Company actively promoted the use of sidcar-equipped motorcycles for retail businesses during this decade. Their 1928 brochure advertises the Indian Service Car with “six novel body designs to choose from” and the chassis sold for $65, compared to $100 for a Princess Sidecar. Two of the more interesting of the lost Indians are the “Indian Bandit Chaser” and Indian Chief Fire
The Bandit Chaser was an armored police vehicle with protective shields made of 1/16-inch “crucible” steel with windows of 7/8-inch safety glass and a gun port. The Princess sidecar was lined with armor plate and there were leg shields of the same material for the driver. It was claimed to be completely bullet proof and the armor to add only

This new Delivery Van was introduced in August 1927 for the 1928 model year. Although this was one of the pre made models, the company advertised custom build designs according to the nature of the business. This one was fitted with two Gladstone bags, a brief case, a portable typewriter, and a complete assortment of riding equipment.
The Indian fire vehicle was equipped with a 25-gallon chemical tank and pump, two 2.5 gallon extinguishers (one foam and one soda-acid type) 100 feet of chemical hose, four 1.5-quart carbonTetrachloride extinguishers, a fireman’s axe, two
steel brooms for grass fires, a pike pole, and a crowbar. Powered by a Chief 74, it carried two firemen and the company claimed the half-ton Indian Chief Fire Patrol could reach speeds of 65 mph. Built in conjunction with American La France they were designed for rapid response and small fires.

Two completely different and separate airplane It’s hard to determine what happened to these Indian models as the turbulent years from 1928 to 1930 were filled with a succession of four different presidents and boards of directors. It was a time of stock manipulation and secret projects even in the aftermath of Black Friday. The Indian Shock Absorber and Indian Ventilator were being manufactured; the experimental car project was axed; and a natural gas powered refrigerator was developed then terminated by another incoming president. The Indian Arrow outboard motor was acquired and improved under one president,
projects took place during that short era--the development of the Tridar amphibious plane and the building of the Continental A-40 prototype engine for the Piper Club “Taylorcraft.” The Indian company acquired controlling interest in Du Pont Motors in April 1930 and within a month the du Ponts purchased control of Indian. The assembly of the last Du Pont cars took place in the motorcycle factory until January 1932. Somehow, out of the tumultuous dust cloud of those years a new Indian motorcycle emerged.
The anecdotal story about the development of the modern trike is that Indian’s chief engineer, Charles Franklin, was in a conversation with the management of the local Packard car dealership about the difficulty and cost in having to use two men to make repair and delivery calls to their customers. Franklin went back to his office,
designed a 101 Scout with two rear wheels and a differential axle, and within a few weeks the service vehicle prototype was ready for testing. In reality, there was a special session of the board of directors on April 21, 1930 where a motion was approved to seek the acquisition of the Stern three-wheeled delivery vehicle patents. The Stern brothers –Albert, Joseph, Julius, and Ernest—had invented a three-wheeled vehicle and at least one of their patents--filed on July 2, 1930; patent #1,877,609 granted on September 13, 1932—was subsequently assigned to the Indian Motocycle Company. What really happened is anyone’s guess. The Indian Dispatch-Tow (101 DT) was introduced as a 1931 model, but the design drawing for Sterns’ patent leaves no doubt as to who invented the modern chassis-type trike. There were at least three interesting passenger versions built on the Dispatch-Tow chassis.
This Art-Deco inspired Indian trike design was actually produced for the Wobber Company. Wouldn’t I like to have one of these! Designed in 1948 it never made it off the drawing boards, yet it looks remarkably like the Ariel made by Ducati.

The history of the Dispatch-Tow has always seemed to be well documented even for the very rare 1939 Traffic Car (VC-13), but the discovery of this series of photographs has shaken my faith. I now suspect that more Indians were lost during another chaotic decade filled with corporate incompetence,
changing markets, and World War II.

From the Depths of File 13 - I Hate Mondays I hate Mondays, but probably not for the same reasons most of you dislike them.

I generally love my job, helping riders find the news and information that is important to them, BUT....
In the case of the lady ride, an east bound pickup struck her north bound motorcycle and the driver was charged with careless driving.
Today, like every riding season Monday, the news feeds are FILLED with crashes that took place over the weekend. Page after page of crash stories, some about dead riders, some about injured riders and some about those who got lucky. It is my job to sift through the feeds and find the information that is pertinent to Canadians and sadly I found information on three crashes, all in Ontario. In the first crash a rider hit and killed a dog but

Tires For Motorcyles, Care & Feeding - AB Events Tires for motorcycles, care and feeding
the date of manufacture and/or four years from the date of purchase (side note: here is yet another reason to keep your receipts).
So, how many folk REALLY LOOK at their tires? How often do you look at them? What are you looking for?
Tire air pressure. There are notations on your bike and in the owners manual which will tell you the air pressures you should run. Typically these are different pressures front and back and will also be different for differing ride conditions, whether riding two-up, high speed, or regular riding. A word of caution here, until you are familiar with your bike
Possibly the most important part of a bike, safety wise, are the tires. Think about it, these by David Pocock are the sole contact between the road and the bike, they are how we stop, start and go around corners. If the tires are too soft or too hard, the bike handles VERY poorly if the tires are too worn they will not grip the road in wet conditions and are prone to going flat. If you are using the wrong kind of tire for your bike that too will contribute to poor performance. On a bike the contact patch is so much smaller than for a car or truck so therefore it is that much more important to us the rider.
and how it handles follow these guide lines exactly, and even after that follow these fairly closely. Too little air will lead to very poor handling and the possibility that your tire might come off the rim under sever conditions, like a hard corner. Too high a pressure will lead to early failure of the tire and also premature wear.

Here are some things to watch for. Age of the tire. How do we know what the age of the tire is? Look on the side wall of the tire there will be a code which on one side of the tire will start with DOT and have at least 12 characters after the DOT, the last set of numbers are the ones which will tell you the date (on the other side of the tire the code will only be the date code). Since 2000 the last set fo numbers will be four numbers, the first two numbers will tell you in which week of the year the tire was made, the last two will designate the year. So for example 3412, this tire was made in the 34th week of 2012. Hopefully you are not riding on tires made before 2000. Tires that are too old are too hard and will not grip the road. Likewise the age of the tire will affect the warranty, manufacturers will warranty a tire for five years from

Tires For Motorcyles, Care & Feeding - AB Events Continued from Previous Page... Tire/wheel balance. As important as wheel balance is on a car, consider that on a bike it is even more so on a bike. A rear tire that is out of balance will contribute to sever fatigue in the rider and be bad for the general handling amongst other problems. If the front tire/wheel is out of balance this can be a much more dangerous problem, steering will be hard in minor cases and almost impossible in the extreme. If the front tire is unbalanced there will be “speed wobble” which can easily upset the bike even at lower speeds.

As always, you the rider, are responsible check you tire pressures everyday you ride, and have a good look at the condition of the tires at least once a week, look for gouges, slices, bulges, chunks missing from the tread or anything else that “doesn’t look quite right”. The life you save will probably be your own. Ride safe, we would rather talk to you than about you.
Tread condition. When tires are made there is a “wear bar” moulded in, this bar will show when the tire has reached what the manufacturer feels is the limit of safe remaining tread on the tire. When you see the “wear bar”, get the tire replaced because any further wear will just be dangerous to you and others. When you are on your new tires be cautious for the first 100 or so km. because, in that first little layer of rubber will be some remnants of “mould release compound”. This “mould release compound” is a very slippery substance that is sprayed into the mould just before the rubber is injected so that the tire will not stick to the mould, which makes for poor to low traction till it has

When We Ride Talk with a group of riders and you’ll soon realize that the reasons we choose to ride a motorcycle are very different for each and every one of us. The riding community in Saskatchewan is made up of a very diverse and broad group of people. Many of us ride alone or with a few friends, never joining or belonging to a club, organization or group. We simply plate our motorcycles and ride every chance we get. In 2013 there were 27,439 motorcycles registered (at some part of the riding season by either plates
3. the reality that we all have zero control over what another driver / rider is going to do when in traffic, on the highway, in a parking lot, or basically anywhere. 4. that we need to be aware, alert, and riding for any and all situations at all times. It does not matter how long you’ve been riding, the type of motorcycle you are riding, your age, the others you may be riding with, the length of your hair, how cool your jacket is, the type of gear to choose to (or not to) wear, and on and on and on. The only thing that matters is how much you are paying attention when you are riding and that you are riding to your own personal ability as a rider. In Saskatchewan the top major reasons a motorcyclist uses when an accident does occur are:
1. Inattention - yes…motorcyclists use this as a reason when they have an accident!! 2. Road condition / excessive loose gravel – ride for the conditions of the road you seeing in front of you and that you are on. Loose gravel and dirt on the road surface is a huge problem all year round…not just till the roads are cleaned in the Cities. 3. Driver inexperience / confusion – there are a lot of new riders out there, and riders who are returning to their motorcycles after many years. This has nothing to do with the age of a rider. 4. Wild life (animals) – yes we do a lot of riding where there is wild life. 5. Careless Driving / Stunting – going too fast, passing improperly, following too closely, etc. This information was taken from a Causation Study done from 2007 – 2012 by Traffic Safety Services – SGI
So when you get on your motorcycle for the first time this season…and every time you ride. Please remember… • ride like you will never be given the right of way • ride like you are never seen • watch the conditions of the road you are riding on, at all times Be defensive, alert, aware and always on guard. I’m not sure what the tipping point was, what had caused us to shift our focus from freedom, true freedom to regulation. I do remember growing up in the seventies. We didn’t have clasps and locks on the cabinets, our mothers never absently minded left us in the kitchen by ourselves. When I was bad in school I was sent to the Principal’s office and was punished by a leather strap across my behind (I still don’t swear).
Trying out for sport teams was a try out. Not everyone made the team. The ones that didn’t spent the year shooting pucks into pails, snagging baseballs rolling off of roofs until we were good enough to make the team the next year. We had winners and losers and even in the playground

The sad thing is freedom is a mirage lingering on the horizon. The Grande Prairie Toys for Tots season opener

by Belt Drive Betty Our local Grande Prairie Toys for Tots group hosts a number of events all riding season. The first of those events was their annual swap meet, which was held at the Army Navy Air Force Club on Saturday May 10th. There was great participation from the business community with vendors like Bear Biker Wear coming all the way from Bonnyville and Bentley’s from Crestomere in central Alberta adding to the local vendors.

A couple of the riding clubs were on hand and I got to interview Manimal of the Chozen Breed and Barb from the Iron Sirens – two great local riding clubs that are growing here in Grande Prairie.

The Grand Prairie Toys For Tots - ON Events Continued from Previous Page... I also got some time with Jamie the new president of Toys for Tots and Seth, the new vice president. These two along with the rest of the board and volunteers did a great job of organizing the event and by the looks of things; they are on to a
ragingly successful season. They have a ton of events planned to support our local kids! Other vendors included Uncle Buck’s – they make the BEST beef jerky around this part of the country and members of the Grandview Hutterite colony were out with some amazing gloves, both gauntlets and working gloves! The quality of the tanning, dying and stitching is utterly fabulous. Righteous Cycles was the only local bike shop on hand but they had lots to offer!
every brand of motorcycle out there and there were some jewelry and clothing vendors on hand as well. There were only two vacant tables! The traffic was good and the ANAVETS club did a brisk business selling breakfast and later lunch. The one thing I love about these season opener events is that a person gets to see people that

On the trails, along the roads and waterways or on the edge of the woods, there are sometimes toxic plants that are dangerous to our health. Poison Ivy is more common, but others are not as well known, such as Giant Hogweed. To help you identify them when you make stops during these rides, let me show in this article three toxic plants that you may come across.

Giant Hogweed Short story Originating in the Caucasus, it was probably introduced to North America as an ornamental plant. It has since taken root and become widespread in many European countries, as well as Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Canada. In Quebec, it is considered to be an invasive alien plant. Description It can measure 2 to 5 metres high and 30 centimetres to 1 metre after mowing or cutting. 2014 Bob Probert Ride Media Launch On May 7th the official Road Captain was announced for the 4th Annual Bob Probert Ride. This year’s honourary grand marshal is the Mike Bechard beautifully talented, Emmy Award nominated, Jacqueline MacInnes Wood. That’s right, our very own hometown Canadian actress, disc jockey, singer, television host and skilled motorcycle rider will lead the estimated 1100 motorcycles on June 22nd from Thunder Road Harley-Davidson. Born in Windsor, Ontario, she is best known for her role as Steffy Forrester on the long-running American soap opera, The Bold and the Beautiful. She is also the younger sister to Dani Probert, the Event Co-Chair for the Bob Probert Ride. For the past four years, riders in vests, leather, boots and blue jeans revved their
engines honouring the late hockey player, Bob Probert while benefitting cardiac care at Hôtel Dieu Grace Hospital. It’s a fitting tribute, given that Bob was a Harley-Davidson enthusiast himself and also loved participating in charity rides. Jacqueline now joins the small list of past

All participants of the Bob Probert Ride have risen over $300,000 to fund the expansion of the cardiac care unit at Hôtel Dieu Grace Hospital. Windsor unfortunately has one of the highest rates of cardiac emergencies in Canada and there is not enough room to meet the demands. As a result, routine procedures are often rescheduled to make way for emergency cases. Dani Probert and the hospital board’s ultimate goal are to make the unit open 24/7 and have two beds available for angioplasty instead of just one. It’s hard to put into words how the community’s support has helped Dani and her four children Brogan, Tierney, Jack and Declyn after such an immense loss. In addition, the family looks forward to this year’s ride being even bigger with riders from

ON News / Events The 2014 “Ride for MS”, now in its 6th year is on Sunday, September 21, 2014. Shar Good, Event Organizer, recounts, “It has been a learning experience, receiving the help of Mike Bechard of the Lone Wolf Clubhouse back in the beginning, to bring to life my dream of an event such as this, since my diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis in 1985! I wanted to make a difference and help in any way I could.” Good explains, “Multiple Sclerosis is the most commonly diagnosed neurological disease found in individuals between the ages of 15 to 40—this area of Southwestern Ontario has a high number of affected people. Reports from local neurologists tell us that approximately 700 to 800 citizens in our area have been diagnosed. Good went on to say, “All motorcycle riders are welcome to participate in the Ride for MS poker run, to benefit the Windsor-Essex County Chapter of the MS Society of Canada. This great ride starts and ends with a full course family style dinner at the Columbus Center of South Windsor, 2014 Columbus Drive in Windsor. Registration begins at 9:00AM and will run until 10:30AM. Registration Fees are as follows: Rider $30 (FREE with $100 in Pledges), Passenger $20 (Free with $100 in Pledges). Participants are encouraged to collect pledges to receive pledge awards that start at $200 with Gas Cards awarded for pledges starting at $250. Dunlop Amateur Showdown winner to get National support “Dunlop Amateur Showdown” Winner of Combined SOAR and RACE Events Get CSBK National Support (csbk.ca) This Ontario motorcycle roadracing season, sanctioning groups SOAR and RACE are working together with a pair of Series race weekends. SOAR is hosting the RACE group at Grand Bend Raceway on June 13-15, while RACE returns the favor by hosting SOAR racers at Shannonville Motorsport Park June 27-29. The MotoMoncton Festival was first launched in August of 2011, with motorcyclists from near and taking over Moncton’s downtown core. This three-day event featured motorcycle stunt shows, a burnout competition, group rides throughout Southeastern New Brunswick, a bike cruise through Moncton, live entertainment on Main Street and much more! In 2012, the City of Moncton was pleased to host another weekend of motorcycle madness in downtown Moncton and to welcome bikers from across the region and across the country as the city hosted both MotoMoncton and the 17th Canadian National Harley Owners Group Rally. Moncton was honoured to be chosen as host city for this national event, and together with MotoMoncton, the H.O.G. Rally proved to be yet another exciting motorcycle weekend in the city. This past August 2013, MotoMoncton organizers were yet again pleased to host another successful weekend of exciting activity, with thousands visiting the festival grounds throughout the weekend.

Fredricton Motorcycle Club Toy Ride The Fredericton Motorcycle Club would be very pleased if you would help support our up coming charity event in support of the D.E.C.H. Children’s Ward. This year our Toy Ride takes place June 14th 2014. We are celebrating our 30th Ride ! Register early to receive a limited Edition 30th Anniversary Shirt. Registration forms online at http://frederictonmotorcycleclub.ca/Home.php The ride begins at the parking lot of the Canadian Tire, Two Nations Crossing (North Side) On site registration between 9:30 am & 10:45 am Ride begins at 11 am sharp. The Motorcyclist will enjoy a scenic country ride via Nashwack Bridge to Stanley. At the Stanley school there will be a barbeque, Show-N-Shine, 50/50 draw, silent auction, etc. The group will return via the Royal Road ending up at the D.E.C.H. for the presentations of the Toys and monies raised to the Child Life Unit of the D.E.C.H. The Fredericton Motorcycle Club has been the most consistent supporter of the D.E.C.H. Children’s Life Unit since 1985! Customer Bowled Over by Service A car mechanic received a repair order that said to check for a clanking noise when going around corners so he took the car out for a test drive and made a right turn, then a left turn, each time hearing a loud clunk. NL Events Patient: “I have a ringing in my ears.” Doctor: “Don’t answer!”
A recently widowed Jewish lady, was sitting on a beach towel at Cocoa Beach, Florida. She looked up and noticed that a man her age had walked up, placed his blanket on the sand nearby and began reading a book. Smiling, she attempted to strike up a conversation with him. ‘Hello, sir, how are you?’ ‘Fine, thank you,’ he responded, and turned back to his book. ‘I love the beach. Do you come here often?’ she asked. ‘First time since my wife passed away last year,’ he replied, and again turned back to his book.
‘Do you live around here?’ she asked. ‘Yes, I live over in Suntree,’ he answered, and then resumed reading. Trying to find a topic of common interest, Sarah persisted. ‘Do you like pussycats?’ With that, the man threw his book down, jumped off his blanket onto hers, tore off both their swimsuits and gave her the most passionate ride of her life! As the cloud of sand began to settle, Sarah gasped and asked the man, ‘How did you know that was what I wanted?’ The man replied, ‘How did you know my name was Katz?’
