I was blessed to attend the Lacombe Art & Motorcycle Show this past weekend and for those who didn’t come out, you missed one EXCELLENT time! When I arrived at the Lacombe Memorial Centre I was not really sure what to expect, but from the minute my hand hit the door I knew this was going to be a very special event. Maureen Mackenzie, the stellar coordinator who organized the event, greeted. It was wonderful to put a face to the voice on the other end of the phone! Maureen is a dynamic human being who is blessed to be supported by the finest crew of volunteers I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and I must say, the city of Lacombe also has a very cool mayor, but I get ahead of myself. After getting my brochure and voting tickets, I dropped some of my electronics in Maureen’s office

by Adrian from Harley’s Place

and took my camera on a walk about to get a feel for the show and it’s layout before filming.

The variety, quality and quantity of motorcycles that were on display was awe inspiring and to see motorcycles interspersed with the traditional art displays, well that was out of this world. The two – motorcycles and art went together so well and the comments from the non-riders who came out were truly wonderful. I was blessed to see so many people come out that I knew, the hugs flowed as hard and fast as the beverages did! The food for the event was incredible and was included in the $15 ticket! Maureen and her incredible volunteers thought of everything, there were tables interspersed among the exhibits where people could sit and have a snack that was far more than a snack! The food was plentiful and diverse and if anyone went away hungry it was their own fault!

The airbrush artists who were on hand to promote their craft along with the more traditional artists were treated to over 800 visitors in 3 hours. It was the busiest show I have attended in a long, long time. Maureen and her volunteers were awfully pleased and rightly so!

The monies raised from this event and others that they host throughout the year go to an endowment fund that then helps artists perfect their craft. I spent a good amount of time walking through the exhibits, speaking with the artists and getting a feel for the immense talent that lives in that central Alberta country! There was so much incredible art on hand including amazing hand crafted jewelry, pottery of all shapes and kinds, amazing wild life photography, incredible oil paintings and even some funky lawn ornaments. Some of the pieces that caught my eye the most were the Great Grey Owl photo taken in Nordegg by Scotty Roxburgh and some

SUPPORT THE STURGIS MUSEUM WITH REAL WOMEN Make Plans now for the 2014 Biker Belles® Ride Real Women, Real Stories and Real Fun – that’s what the Biker Belles® ride is every year, and 2014 promises to be even better than prior years. The Biker Belles was created by the Sturgis Buffalo Chip® to celebrate women in motorcycling. This year’s ride, presented by Harley-Davidson, will be

held on Tuesday, August 5th. It all begins with an inspiring symposium of leading industry women at The Lodge at Deadwood. This year, participants on the symposium, titled “Ride On”, include Kathy Tolleson, Founder of Roar Motorcycles, Cat Hammes, known as the “One-Legged-Blonde” and others. These leaders will share their stories of riding and will encourage all of the participants to be a part of the world of women in motorcycling. Be sure to check out the Team Diva Comfort Zone to tune yourself up before the beautiful ride through the canyons of the Black Hills. Road Captain and safety expert, Vicki Roberts-Sanfelipo, will lead the way. Guests arrive to a special catered reception, fashion show featuring Harley-Davidson Motorclothes® and auction at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. Created to raise funds for South Dakota charities, Biker Belles brings women, their families and friends together to celebrate the role they play in shaping the culture, sport, art and the history of motorcycling. While the ride celebrates women, everyone is welcome to join our gathering of mentorship, riding and sharing!

The Busted Knuckle Chronicles - Canada’s Rider Powered News www.bustedknucklenews.com

Riders will make a contribution to join the Ride and festivities, 100% of which will again go directly to two South Dakota charities to benefit womenrelated causes. The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame receives a portion of the proceeds to expand or enhance exhibits that feature women riders and their role in the history and culture of motorcycling. Helping with Horsepower is the second recipient – with funds being used in the Biker Rebuild Program that helps young women and girls who are at risk or are victims of abuse. Get your tickets and learn more about the Biker Belles Ride at www.bikerbelles.com.

From the Depths of File 13 - AB Events Continued from Previous Page... On top of that disappointing news, came some condemnation from a person who feels that I should just not respond to the Sturgis North lawsuit against me and that there can be no fight if I just don’t show up for the battle. I was accused of being a bad wife because I know that stress and MS patients do not mix and that sure gave me pause for thought. My husband has MS and the stress of that lawsuit has caused a flaring of this hideous disease. This person suggested that I was a bad wife for putting him under such stress and that I should just not respond. This person either does not understand how lawsuits initiated by others work OR they truly think that my fighting for the Freedom of the Press is not a valid fight. If I was to not respond to the lawsuit, it would mean these people would win by default and that would mean that Belt Drive Betty Media and all of the charity work we do would be forever ceased. It would also affect other journalists as it would set a legal precedent that is very dangerous.

So I sit here this morning examining my business and my life. I am asking myself many questions and am hoping to find some inspiration and guidance from the riding community.

David Pocock - Tool Kit on a Bike - AB Events I often get asked,”What tools do I need in a tool kit on the bike?” My answer. What kind of riding are you doing, just in town or do you plan on going on long trips? If you’re going to be staying in town with maybe short trip just outside the city limits then might be you don’t “really” need to have a kit at all. If you feel you want to have a kit then a basic set of sockets, a screwdriver, a Spark plug socket for the size of spark plug in YOUR bike and maybe a pair of pliers. Yes, there are basically three different sizes of spark plug used in bikes today also be aware that on many bikes there is limited room between the outside of the plug and the space in the top of the cylinder head to get a socket so bear that in mind and buy a GOOD quality thin wall socket.

And OH YEAH how about a real tire patching kit, which will contain patches, glue, a roughing tool that you will also use to seat the patch. The roughing tool is used to rough up the area around a hole to give the glue, and your patch, a little extra rough surface to bond to. Also remember that an air pump of some variety will be required, (personally I’ve got a little hand pump that is good to 45 psi).

Thoughts To Ponder - AB Events Go Go’s, along with all the cash in your wallet. AN ACTUAL CRAIG’S LIST PERSONALS AD Van [That Made his day!]

To the Guy Who Tried to Mug Me in Downtown Savannah night before last. Date: 2011-11-27, 1:43 am. E.S.T.

I was the guy wearing the black Burberry jacket that you demanded that I hand over, shortly after you pulled the knife on me and my girlfriend, threatening our lives. You also asked for my girlfriend’s purse and earrings. I can only hope that you somehow come across this rather important message.

I then threw your wallet into the big pink “pimp mobile” that was parked at the curb ..... after I broke the windshield and side window and keyed the entire driver’s side of the car. Earlier, I managed to get in two threatening phone calls to the DA’s office and one to the FBI, while mentioning President Obama as my possible target.

“My opinions may have changed, but not the fact that I am right.” - Ashleigh Brilliant

The FBI guy seemed really intense and we had a nice long chat (I guess while he traced your number etc.).; In a way, perhaps I should apologize for not killing you ... but I feel this type of retribution is a far more appropriate punishment for your threatened crime. I wish you well as you try to sort through some of these rather immediate pressing issues, and can only hope that you have the opportunity to reflect upon, and perhaps reconsider, the career path you’ve chosen to pursue in life.. Remember, next time you might not be so lucky. Have a good day!

First, I’d like to apologize for your embarrassment; I didn’t expect you to actually crap in your pants when I drew my pistol after you took my jacket.. The evening was not that cold, and I was wearing the jacket for a reason.. my girlfriend was happy that I just returned safely from my 2nd tour as a Combat Marine in Afghanistan .. She had just bought me that Kimber Custom Model 1911 .45 ACP pistol for my birthday, and we had picked up a shoulder holster for it that very evening. Obviously you agree that it is a very intimidating weapon when Thoughtfully yours, Semper fi, Alex pointed at your head ... isn’t it?! Submitted by Ron Bacon I know it probably wasn’t fun walking back to wherever you’d come from with crap in your pants. I’m sure it Was even worse walking bare-footed since I made you leave your shoes, cell phone, and wallet with me. Medicine Hat Swap Meet

What has commonly been known as the Medicine Hat Swap Meet (held at Harmony Hall in Redcliff) changed organizers for 2014. When word got out that Tracy & George would NOT be organizing a meet this year Darwin stepped up and ran with it. Despite the short notice to get everything into place Darwin did an outstanding job!

When I spoke with Darwin last week he was very pleased with the results. I asked if he would do it again? His response was yes! Medicine Hat and surrounding area needs this event!

It’s like a break from the long cold winter and gets everyone motivated for the upcoming season. Many in attendance come out just to sit and have a burger & a beverage and reconnect with fellow riders. There were approximately 200 people who attended and the proceeds were given to support the local Autism Chapter. Submitted by Denise Dollz

R.A.G.E. - SK Events any and all situations at all times. It does not matter how long you’ve been riding, the type of motorcycle you are riding, your age, the others you may be riding with, the length of your hair, how cool your jacket is, the type of gear to choose to (or not to) wear, and on and on and on.

When We Ride

The only thing that matters is how much you are paying attention when you are riding and that you are riding to your own personal ability as a rider.

ride like you will never be given the right of way

ride like you are never seen

watch the conditions of the road you are riding on, at all times

Be defensive, alert, aware and always on guard. Rhonda Cwynar President, R.A.G.E. Riders Against Government Exploitation

In Saskatchewan the top major reasons a motorcyclist uses when an accident does occur are:

Talk with a group of riders and you’ll soon realize 1. Inattention - yes…motorcyclists use this as a that the reasons we choose to ride a motorcycle are reason when they have an accident!! very different for each and every one of us. The riding community in Saskatchewan is made up of 2. Road condition / excessive loose gravel – ride a very diverse and broad group of people. Many for the conditions of the road you seeing in front of us ride alone or with a few friends, never joining of you and that you are on. Loose gravel and or belonging to a club, organization or group. We dirt on the road surface is a huge problem all simply plate our motorcycles and ride every chance year round…not just till the roads are cleaned in we get. the Cities. In 2013 there were 27,439 motorcycles registered (at some part of the riding season by either plates or permits). These motorcycles were registered in 626 different locations! We are literally spread ALL OVER this province! All of us do share 4 common things: 1. the roads we ride on. 2. the traffic we ride with. 3. the reality that we all have zero control over what another driver / rider is going to do when in traffic, on the highway, in a parking lot, or basically anywhere. 4. that we need to be aware, alert, and riding for

3. Driver inexperience / confusion – there are a lot of new riders out there, and riders who are returning to their motorcycles after many years. This has nothing to do with the age of a rider. 4. Wild life (animals) – yes we do a lot of riding where there is wild life. 5. Careless Driving / Stunting – going too fast, passing improperly, following too closely, etc. This information was taken from a Causation Study done from 2007 – 2012 by Traffic Safety Services – SGI

So when you get on your motorcycle for the first time this season…and every time you ride. Please remember…

Finally after he reiterated again that he couldn’t sell me the part I asked what the problem was. The simple part I was looking for was for a TriGlide but I had said I had intended to use it on a RoadKing - he couldn’t sell it to me because it wasn’t designed for my motorcycle. I assured him I had a firm grasp of what I was doing but it was clear that he truly was not going to sell me the part.

“I can’t sell you that.” I dismissed the salesman’s statement as fast as he had said it. My trip to the dealership was simply to price out some parts so I could budget them for the King build. As we talked it was becoming clear what he meant by he couldn’t sell me the parts. You would think that it would be a supply and demand thing that Harley simply didn’t produce enough of the parts and now there was a shortage somewhere in the pipe line. Maybe the part was simply obsolete or just not available just yet as a replacement part but as we talked looking at the schematics on the screen there was a part number, price and even listed the part being in stock in his

Walking away I shook my head. I could see where he was coming from. In our litigation happy society people sue at the drop of a hat. Whether its because their coffee was too hot or that the local McDonalds ran out of McNuggets it has created a vortex of paranoia. If I used a TriGlide part on my RoadKing and it failed I could sue Harley Davidson walking away with a big payday. But that is just it. I was not using the part as the manufacture had intended, it should absolve the manufacture of any responsibility. Sadly we traded those rights and freedoms way. Common sense would say that if you buy a coffee it will be hot but we argued and won that we are too stupid to know that. MOTORCYCLE RIDING TIP: HAVING AN ESCAPE PATH

R

Motorman’s Tips Tricks and Techniques I was recently asked about how to avoid one of the most frequent types of motorcycle accidents, (the vehicle that turns left in front of you, violating your right of way, and what can you do about it).

hard and fast rule on this situation. The best thing to do is practice your braking. Concentrate on the front brake. Practice braking from 20, 30, to 60 or 70mph in a controlled environment, such as a deserted road or parking lot. If you always ride at higher speeds, practice braking at those speeds. In a panic situation, you will always revert to your training. If you never train, you will only have panic and dumb luck to rely on. Practice, practice, practice. Practice is the key.

- Jerry “Motorman” Palladino

This is a tough one, I am not trying to avoid the question, but the best answer is, it depends on the situation. If for instance, you are driving on a two land road, approaching an intersection where you spot a vehicle that you believe may pull out in front of you. First, you should be covering your brakes whenever there is a possibility that another vehicle may violate your right of way. For instance, if you are north bound and the vehicle is southbound and about to make a left hand turn, the best thing may be to first, brake hard then release the brakes and swerve to your left going around the back of the vehicle. Of course, if you are going slow enough to stop, do so and avoid the swerving maneuver. A good idea is to practice the brake and swerve maneuver in a parking lot so that when this situation arises, you will know what to do. In this same situation, you are on a four or more lane road with a busy intersection you may have only one choice. That would be to stop prior to hitting the vehicle as swerving to the left could cause a head on collision with oncoming traffic and swerving to the right could cause a collision with a vehicle going the same direction with you. In other words, if there is an escape path, make sure you turn your head and eyes to that escape path. Never become target fixated on the left turning vehicle or you will surely hit it. There is no

Motorcycles weren’t his thing, up until now. Brad admitted that he would love to learn how to properly ride and buy himself a good reliable motorcycle, preferably a Harley-Davidson! I pondered on Brad’s enthusiasm but, let’s be honest, biking comes with risks. Safe riding habits can help eliminate danger and make twowheeling a rewarding lifelong pastime—but no one should consider riding without completing a Motorcycle Rider Training course. I suggested for Brad to enroll in the next MRT class at St. Clair College before making his decision to ride. These classes incorporate both classroom instruction and rigorous road training on MRT-supplied small-displacement (250cc) beaters. I even advised him that some insurers may underwrite MRT courses, and offer discount rates for those graduates.

Mike Bechard - So You Want To Learn To Ride? Continued from Previous Page... motorcycle companies after World War II. They achieved a sort of perfection in the early 1970s with what has now become known as the “Universal Japanese Motorcycle” (UJM). This was first exemplified by Honda’s four-cylinder models in the 1960s. These bikes opened up motorcycling to a countless number of people because they had a reliability that was superior. I told Brad that the brother to the Standard bike are Cruisers, designed just for that. With sweptback handlebars and a lot of chrome, they are not meant to go fast, or long distances, but instead to be seen (and often, heard). The classic cruiser—and to some, the only one—is the bigbore V-Twin motorcycle built by Harley-Davidson. Known as “Hogs”—Harleys are more popular (and pricier) thanks in part to the company’s near mythical return from collapse in 1981. I said to Brad, If you want a new Harley, be watchful; it’s a buyer’s market—for the moment, anyway. I told Brad that when I bought my ‘95 Sportster new and paid sticker price for it. Three and a half years later, I traded it back to the same dealer for $500 more than I had paid originally, and he resold it for $1000 above the current price of a new one. At the time, many experienced riders agreed, a novice rider’s first motorcycle should not be a Harley—even the Sportster is a handful for a newbie.

Tri-Glides. I informed Brad that motorcycle tourers are perhaps the most devoted of all cycling enthusiasts, simply because no other vehicle so rewards the love of the open road. A motorcycle trip on a touring bike is a scenic adventure— sun in your eyes, nothing between you and the surroundings and the giddy, keen intoxication of piloting your scooter across hundreds of miles of isolated (and preferably twisting) highway. “Are Harley’s reliable?” asked Brad. I explained to him that at one time Harley made unreliable crap, but advances over the past thirty years have made Harley’s more dependable and sturdy. When

properly maintained, a good one will last 150200,000 kilometres easily. Before I departed with my new found friend, I asked Brad again, “So, you want to learn to ride? Then do it, because you only live once”. I also suggested once he felt comfortable riding, he should join a group, meet new friends, share stories—and no matter whatever else you do—as us motorcyclists like to say, keep the shiny side up and rubber side down! Ride safe, Ride free!

Mike “Chopper” Bechard

But Brad was dead set on buying a Harley and loved the look of my Root-Beer Road King. “Ok, slow down there, big fella”, I thought. Touring motorcycles are big-displacement, big-framed, heavy-duty machines, proportioned for all-day riding as well as luggage. The most popular of these is the Electra-Glide, a 1600-cc behemoth available with such options as ABS, Sirius radio, Bluetooth, and reverse gear found in the Harley

Ontario’s first driver/motorcyclist road sharing awareness campaign launched by the Rider Training Institute in collaboration with government, retail, and insurance industry partners Increasing numbers of motorcycles on GTA roads About the Rider Training Institute necessitates greater awareness between riders The Rider Training Institute (RTI) is a national notand drivers alike. In collaboration with municipal for-profit association that offers comprehensive transportation authorities, GTA retailers, and motorcycle licensing and skills development members of the insurance sector, the Rider training programs throughout locations across Training Institute has launched a road sharing Ontario. Motorcyclists from all walks of life, both awareness campaign in advance of the 2014 beginner and seasoned riders alike, choose the motorcycling season. Following a series of live segments with CP24’s Cam Woolley on April 14, a visual tip-sheet has been distributed through social media, and printed posters will be displayed at select locations throughout the GTA.

RTI as an ongoing partner in developing paths towards long term safe and enjoyable motorcycling careers.

Continued Next Page...

A first of its kind in the region, the tip-sheet provides road users with easy to understand road sharing best practices, and places the responsibilities of motorcyclists and drivers sideby-side. “Most road awareness messaging is delivered independently to drivers or motorcyclists” stated Sharron St. Croix, Executive Director of the Rider Training Institute. “Placing their responsibilities side-by-side will ensure more people, drivers and riders alike, get the message” St. Croix went on to add. Ontario’s annual road safety reports (ORSAR) show a near equal distribution of single and multivehicle crash scenarios represented in motorcycle fatalities since 2008. This suggests that a multi pronged campaign focusing on awareness for automobile and motorcycle operators alike is overdue in Ontario. “Our hope is that drivers will benefit from tips on what to look out for, and that riders will be more aware of their own responsibilities” St. Croix added.

Faith & Motorcycles - ON Events Making a difference: Don’t know about you, but I have to say there is something special about watching a movie where a man, woman or childmakes a positive difference in the world. I can’t help but recall the departed “Indian Larry” who was a pioneer Pastor Chuck in the revolutionary design and promotion of his amazing creations, and his tireless efforts to be a spokesperson for the industry which had literally blossomed in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Biker build offs and biker reality shows hit the networks with a flurry and ‘Indian Larry’ was always colorful and accommodating. Myself I love action movies and the odd comedy, but I never missed a movie with ‘John Candy’ starring in it. His on screen demeanor was entertaining and genuinely funny, as was his behind the scenes character and kind heartedness. I recall my kids growing up watching his movies with us and they always look back on those days with a fondness and big smiles.

In recent years, blockbuster Hollywood megamovies have often featured super heroes, like Batman, Superman, Spiderman and Ironman, all who seemingly save the world or protect humanity from an evil force, thus making a difference in the lives of people everywhere. I was recently asked why I chose to become a biker church pastor and what came to mind, was the thought that I wanted to make a difference. I wanted people who did not know Jesus, to have the opportunity to hear the salvation message, and to know that they can experience a supernatural change in their life and obtain citizenship in heaven. No personal agenda, no other motivation. I simply want to make a positive difference. I don’t believe that God keeps score, but rather He sees our hearts and whether we impact one person or a thousand, what is important is the fact that we give our best to God, and that we genuinely care for those who have not received salvation. I mean, if you had a cure

for cancer, would you not want to share it with the world? Even more than that, I know with assurance that eternal life is very real, as is a life of joy, contentment, peace and hope in these few short years we walk this planet. How ironic that we read in our “Owner’s Manual for Life” (the bible) in John 3:17 God sent his

Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. Talk

about making a difference !? Jesus Christ is real, and He wants to make a difference in your life.

Ride Safe, Ride True

- Pastor Chuck

Who can forget Paul Henderson’s heroics in the “Canada – Russia” hockey series in 1972? Sports heroes abound and depending on your sport and your team, it wouldn’t be hard to come up with names of athletes whose contributions and outstanding performances change the course of championship history.

This assistance may include providing information about nearby repair shops, towing, accommodations, making phone calls, providing directions, etc. While some Canadian Riders have expressed that they would be able to provide help with tools, wrenching, towing, and even temporary accommodations, the level of assistance you may provide is totally up to you as you feel comfortable and safe to do so. Let’s face it, most of us have been there.... away from home and broke down by the side of the road. These names are probably foreign to you now but we are in 45 States, Canada and parts of Europe, in Australia and growing. Our main goals are to ensure that the child is “Found Safe” and prevent them from being introduced into the unseemly world of child trafficking, which occurs far too often in about 1/3 of the cases of missing kids. 2100+ kids go missing every day in the United States and Canada (source: US Dept. of Justice-Amber Alerts Canada) and we want to do our part to get these kids back into a safe environment by working with law enforcement and the parents/ guardians. Please read over the attached documents and peruse our websites: www.cfsimissing.org and http://www.bikersurbanresponseneeded.org/ Home_Page.html so that you can see what we are all about. Both organizations are also pending 501(c)3 status U.S. All I am asking of you is to recognize our sole efforts to get these kids where they belong, whether it is in the home or in a more sheltered/ controlled environment if the home is not safe. We are also developing child safety programs for parents to help them in the prevention and awareness of this.
