I was looking forward to stopping at Maison Maurice Dufour, which is only a few kilometers up the road from the Laiterie Charlevoix. The rain was coming down in buckets and I was grateful that traffic was light. As I rode down the long driveway to the cheese maker’s, I thought about what I had been told about the Famille Migneron. The Migneron family of cheeses that are crafted by Maurice DuFour and are considered to be some

of the best in the world. While all of the cheeses that are produced here are award winning, there are a couple of very special ones and they are not made from cow’s milk. I parked the bike and walked towards the barns, if this was a dairy farm, it should be milking time, but because it was a sheep farm, I was unsure if there would be a similar schedule. I was in luck and got to watch the sheep being milked.

After watching the farm hand with the sheep for a while, I walked across the paved driveway to the store.

While the Dufour cheese offerings are all impressive with rich, full-bodied flavors, my favorite was Le Secret de Maurice, a soft-shelled liquid cheese made from 100 percent sheep’s milk.

It’s a very well decorated store that makes you feel like you are in a café rather than a cheese maker’s. The only clue that this is different from a café or high-end restaurant, are the glass walls where you can see cheeses that are curing!

My Final Day in Quebec Having never tried cheese made from sheep’s milk I was surprised at the flavor. Rich and creamy, and very different from cows cheese! There are no words that I am aware of that can accurately describe how this cheese tastes. Eaten with strawberries by dipping them into the cheese, the cheese seems to draw the sweetness of the berry out. Although I do not generally care for blue cheese, Le Bleu de Brebis de Charlevoix, another 100% sheep’s milk cheese was one I quite enjoyed.

I enjoyed learning about the differences in the varieties of cheese made in this region. It explained some of the exquisite dishes the various chefs of the region produce.

My Final Day in Quebec - BC Events I rode back into Baie-St.-Paul and Le Ferme, where I would be staying for my last evening here. Tomorrow I would be on the road, heading back to Alberta. La Ferme is a very modern, upscale and trendy hotel that has won a lot of awards for its architecture, but it is a very different hotel than the one Daniel Gauthier (of the Cirque du Soleil family) had envisioned.

Did you know that Cirque du Soleil was founded right here in Baie St. Paul? I didn’t!

He also owns a train that runs along the Saint Lawrence from Quebec City to La Malbaie.

Daniel Gauthier is the man behind Le Massif, the ski resort here in Charlevoix, it is a project that has taken a full 10 years to accomplish and encompasses adding hiking trails and gondolas to le Massif which is a mountain that offers some of the best skiing east of the Rockies!

La Ferme, is the final jewel in the crown of this operation, offering the traveller an impressive array of themed rooms and incredible cuisine and customer service. When I said the hotel is very different from the one originally envisioned by Mr. Gauthier;

Originally his idea was to take the 100 I parked my bike and walked into the lobby, and year old, H shaped barn that once stood on this was served by a gentleman who spoke very good land and renovate it into a 5 star hotel, but some English. My Final Day in Quebec The room was not one of the ones I had toured previously. All white and glass, the room was a marvel. The big queen bed divided the room and had a TV built right into the footboard, which went from floor to ceiling. The cupboard for clothes was a wee bit small, but as I discovered, there were large drawers under the bed that made up for that! I availed myself of the cappuccino machine, and got all of my wet soggy gear off.

I called room service and they sent someone up The master chef here is David Forbes and his to grab my wet gear and put it in the dryer for me. My dinner reservation in Les Labours was for 7pm. The meal, the service, the ambiance in Les Labours is amazing. I sat at the counter to eat, as I wanted to watch the chef’s as they prepared meals.

My Final Day in Quebec back in the cupboards I cleaned it that well! The dish was peppery, pungent and full bodied. The snails were cooked to perfection and accompanied by the red wine I was drinking and the fresh bread, it was absolutely delightful.

It wasn’t long before I fully understood why Les Labours is so well loved. I had the roast kid shank served with parsnips and a cherry tomato confit.

Some people from Quebec city sat down next to me and we chatted for a bit and they expressed that they come to Charlevoix on the weekends to get out of the city and come experience the amazing cuisine here. We talked about the various restaurants and why this one is one of their favorites.

The flavors were amazing; the meat was so tender no knife was needed and the parsnips were the perfect foil to the rich meat. I was in heaven.

My Final Day in Quebec - BC Events The waiter was attentive without being obnoxious and when he came to discuss dessert he recommended I try a dish whose name I cannot remember, My dessert but I will never forget the flavors. It was a cake dish with blueberries and fresh honeycomb, sprinkled with chocolate.

A clean desk is a sign of a cluttered desk drawer.

Served with an Americano coffee, I dove into the delicate offering with gusto. I was amazed that after the big meal I just had that I had any room for dessert. What an amazing meal.

I wandered back to my room to settle in for the night and slept like a baby in that glorious queen bed. When I awoke, the sky was still gray but the rain had stopped!

My Final Day in Quebec and I want to thank Francois Gariepy of Tourisme Charlevoix, again, these people showed me a side of Quebec that I did not know existed. It is one based in hospitality, it is welcoming and inviting and in spite of the perceived language barrier, these people want your trade, they want to get to know you and they want to show off their beautiful piece of Canada. I urge you to give these regions of Quebec a chance to captivate you. You will not be disappointed. A rain filed night

I called the front desk to get a luggage cart to take my gear to the bike and soon I was packed up and saying goodbye to Charlevoix and Saguenay Lac St. Jean. I made a promise to myself as I rode out of the parking lot…I would be back and sooner than later as these two regions of Quebec have captured a piece of my soul. I want to thank Nancy Donneley of Tourisme Saguenay-Lac-St. Jean and all of the riders from her region who made my time there so special

The riding is magnificent, the scenery is awe inspiring, the attractions to take in are abundant and the hospitality is as welcoming and warm as you will find anywhere in the world.

Ride for the Breath of Life Every year, riders from all backgrounds rev up their engines in support of cystic fibrosis research and patient care. The Ride for the Breath of Life is a motorcycle ride that takes place between May and October at various locations across Canada. Since its inauguration in 1985, the Ride for the Breath of Life has achieved enormous success, raising over $500,000 in life-changing funding for Canadians with cystic fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis is the most common, fatal genetic disease affecting young Canadians. There is no cure. A defective gene and its protein product cause people living with cystic fibrosis to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening infections. This mucus also obstructs the pancreas and

From the Depths of File 13 (AKA my two bits worth by Belt Drive Betty) Does being socially conscious really mean muffling your pipes? Well, apparently not!

Watch this video from Jekill and Hyde an exhaust manufacturer from the Netherlands that seems to have hit on a product that can make your motorcycle more socially acceptable.

does it affect the tuning, I have no answer to that question, however, I can tell you that according to the company’s LinkedIn page, it took them 14 years to develop the product! Many riders will tell you that noise can be controlled by the way you use your throttle alone, and that statement is true enough to a degree, but what about those nasty Motorcycle Only Noise Check Stops where they rev your bike up? Are you going to pass? Well, with pipes like these one could pass, easily. It seems like a solution that could offer the rider the best of both worlds, the sound of a throaty pipe and quiet when leaving your driveway at 6 am, or putting through the neighbourhood on the way home late at night. I’d love to hear your thoughts on socially acceptable pipes!

A number of Harley-Davidson shops in Europe and elsewhere are carrying these pipes.

Until next week, I am your editor,

David Pocock - Gaming and Safe Riding Question: What do On-line Games and Safe Motorcycle Riding have in common? Yes, I know there are several answers here, however consider the following.

Inattention without `Agro-ing` the LEO`s but the Madge of Malevolence Manages to bump you off the track to the Basket of Most Enjoyable foods. Result - 60 health and -100 Energy Restart quest after healing and resupply of energy And so the game continues till you have successfully gained the Basket of Most Enjoyable Foods, +200 health, + 600 energy.

In Gaming repeat runs through a scenario (remember this word, it’ll Riding. by David Pocock come up a few more times) In your head, or even better talk it out with some will yield optimal survival. So of your friends, think about any emergency event in other words, if you think called (remember this word) a scenario. Follow the through a given event enough times, figure out the five golden questions, Who, What, Where, Why and best survival outcome and then game it to see if How. that is what happens, you will already “know” what to do when the “real” thing happens. Example: Gaming example: Who: Single rider in moderate traffic, clear weather, dry pavement. Quest: To gain the Basket of Most Enjoyable Foods and 400 Exp points, you must avoid the What: A car wreck happens. Random Road Pits, Trolls of Inattention and the evil Where: Right in front of you Madge of Malevolence oh and there are always the LEO`s who will dock you points for infractions of Why: Inattention by one of the drivers (remember game rules. our Trolls of Inattention) First try: You successfully miss all of the Random How: We will stipulate that you’ve been doing Road Pits, but two of the Trolls of Inattention YOUR due diligence being a defensive rider you are manage to thwart your advance a cause you to a reasonable space behind the vehicle ahead, so `Agro` the LEO`s and loose the track to the Basket. you check for a clear lane one side or another brake Result, -40 health and -60 energy. and move to that lane. Restart quest after healing and resupply of Now is the time for you, or the group, to jump in energy. and talk about what “could” go wrong. Second try: You know how to already miss all of Did you signal? the Random Road Pits, and you`re already looking What “might” the vehicle behind you do? out for the tricks that the Trolls of Inattention pulled the last time and you`ve figured out that going What other factors might be involved? (Eg. Loose left and THEN right will avoid that particular trap gravel, glass shards from shattered windows, fluids and you think you can jump the next two Trolls of from unknown sources or the accident ahead...etc.)

The Busted Knuckle Chronicles - Canada’s Rider Powered News www.bustedknucklenews.com

Once you or the group have successfully “gamed” a good outcome to the basic problem, add other factors, for example; low light, going into the rising or setting sun, night time, varying degrees of precipitation (rain OR snow), change the speeds and direction of the incident. So, Now that you have the idea here are some Scenario’s to play with, have fun and by all means add something completely off-the-wall to each scenario and share what you come up with.

David Pocock - Gaming and Safe Riding 1) Two lane road, you are ahead of a tractor/trailer rig by a reasonable amount, there is another tractor/ trailer rig coming toward you in the opposite lane, a vehicle pulls out from behind the oncoming rig to pass and “does not see” you.

when something like the scenario you have already “Gamed” happens you will be able to react and deal with the event in such a manner that you WILL gain the Basket of Most Enjoyable Foods +100 Health, +600 energy.

2)You are in the middle lane of three, there is a Ride safe, ride well. We would rather talk with tractor/trailer in the lane beside you to the right, in you than about you. the left lane 100 metres ahead there is vehicle that has a blowout, there is a vehicle immediately beside or slightly ahead of you in the lane to your left and behind you is a police car. 3) At dusk, you are on a two lane country road in hilly country. You see deer on the left side of the road and there is a reasonably deep ditch on the right side of the road. Just after the ditch there is a field access to which the gate is open. As you are approaching some of the deer head to the open gate right across your path of travel. 4) In city traffic, as you approach an intersection with the green light showing for you, a vehicle jumps the red light and hits a vehicle in the oncoming lane, you are in the inside lane, there are no vehicles in the outside lane. To change this up, change the lanes of travel and the lanes in which the accident occurs and possibly add stray pedestrians. 5) You are on a multi-lane road and the vehicle just in front of you, in one of the lanes to either side of you, changes lane with out signal or apparently looking. For an even higher level of difficulty, add that this vehicle keeps going and hits a vehicle in the lane to the other side of you. See what you and your riding group come up with for answers make sure you look at the question from as many different perspectives and decide on a reasonable response. Then maybe, as a group, set up the scene and walk through it and detail what you would do, where and when this will help to set it in your thinking and maybe if or

AB Events - Thought To Ponder Welcome to Heaven Einstein, Casals, Picasso, and Eisenhower die and go to heaven. St. Peter is waiting for them, and requests identification. Einstein, who is first in line, says “I don’t have any ID, but I can explain the equivalence of matter and energy.” He is given a blackboard and proceeds to give an eloquent explanation of one of his most famous theories.

“Only Einstein himself could explain this so well,” says St. Peter. “Step right in, professor. Next?”

Then Casals, who is next in line, says “I don’t have any ID, but I can play my cello to prove who I am.” He is given a cello and plays the most beautiful music imaginable.

He looked at the receptionist and wagged his tail, then walked over to the sign, looked at it and whined. Getting the idea, the receptionist got the office manager. The office manager looked at the dog and was surprised, to say the least. However, the dog looked determined, so he lead him into the office. Inside, the dog jumped up on the chair and stared at the manager. The manager said, “I can’t hire you. The sign says you have to be able to type.” The dog jumped down, went to

He looked at the dog and said, “I realize that you are a very intelligent dog and have some interesting abilities. However, I still can’t give you the job.” The dog jumped down and went to a copy of the sign and put his paw on the sentences that told about being an Equal Opportunity Employer. The manager said, “Yes, but the sign also says that you have to be bilingual”. The dog looked at the manager calmly and said “Meow”.

A farmer was driving along the road with a load of fertilizer. A little boy, playing in front of his house, saw him and called, “What’ve you got in your truck?”

Home • Auto • Motorcycle • Commercial

“Fertilizer,” the farmer replied. “What are you going to do with it?” asked the little boy. “Put it on strawberries,” answered the farmer. “You ought to live here,” the little boy advised him. “We put sugar and cream on ours.”

AB News / Events S & S Custom Tattooing is holding its first annual motorcycle ride in support of Ronald McDonald House® Northern Alberta and BC. This will be the first ever, Western Canada ride in support of Ronald McDonald House and also the largest, consisting of 200 riders travelling across Alberta and into British Columbia. The “S & S Motorcycle Ride for Ronald” is taking place from Saturday, August 2 through Sunday, August 10, 2014 and we would love for you to join us! Our main goals are to raise a minimum of $100,000 through this ride as well as collecting food and clothing for the various Ronald McDonald Houses across Western Canada. Gifts in kind such as food, clothing or services towards the ride are greatly appreciated and can be arranged to be collected by contacting Shawn Lee. This ride will help to raise awareness of what the Ronald

McDonald House does and the services it provides to families. At S & S, we simply want to draw more attention to the houses in our communities so that they may continue their work with not only the children they help, but their families as well. The materials enclosed provide an overview of Ronald McDonald House Northern Alberta and British Columbia, as well as specific sponsorship opportunities available for our motorcycle ride. As an event sponsor, you will have the opportunity to support a vital charity that provides comfort and compassion for out-of-town families and their children who are being treated in Edmonton, AB and Vancouver, BC medical facilities.

R.A.G.E. - SK Events been increasing our rates and we’ve been “blindly believing”. Last year WE, the motorcycle community experienced an abrupt negative change (72.6% average increase), we reacted immediately and decisively. We didn’t think about it; we just reacted!

The Danger of Doing Nothing You’ve no doubt heard the story of the frog in boiling water. If you drop a frog into boiling water, it immediately jumps out (or so the story goes). However, if you put a frog in a pot of roomtemperature water, and then bring the water to a boil very, very slowly, the frog will stay in the water until it dies. It’s an odd experiment that seems eerily similar to what we are experiencing with our private vehicle insurance rates in Saskatchewan. Before last year the Motorcycle Community was the “frog”. Until this year the whole driving community of Saskatchewan has been “frogs”. We’ve simply relied too heavily on our only private vehicle insurer to “do what was right”…while they’ve

Yet, till that point we simply did nothing. In 2012 when our rates went up an average of 30%...we simply didn’t pay attention to what was happening. The Rate Review Process is not one that we (none of us) normally paid any attention to! But you can bet we are now!!!

Over the years our only insurer has strayed from the Auto Fund Philosophy of “All Drivers are treated equally unless their driving record shows they are a greater risk for causing collision”. Instead what is happening now is: 1. All drivers are treated equally “IN SPITE” of their driving record showing they are a greater risk for causing collision.

bad Uncle Monkey would really suit his project. It was a matter of hitting his local ads to find a running bike that met his basic starting requirements. But as our exchange went on he couldn’t see the forest through the trees. What bike should he buy, what bikes were air cool V-twins with chains? I don’t really blame him for not getting the idea because we are all guilty of it from time to time. I want to build a rat rod, some cool beater vehicle to bag around in when I want a change from my bikes. Really as long as it runs and stops it would be cool. But being financially strapped and wanting to have all the cool tools I figured I could sell a couple of old vehicles I’m storing out on the farm. You know - ratty old vehicles that would make cool rat rods for beating on for some one. Sometimes we over think things. We lose the big picture trying to fill in all the little details missing what is right before us. I was recently talking with someone who was looking to build a simple bobber project. His requirements were pretty broad - air cooled V-twin with a chain. He had no brand loyalty and it would seem that a Harley, though the best choice, was out of his budget. As he tried to find the perfect project he was missing that any bike

sell off a couple rough diamonds to cut another. Maybe turn that old dirt bike into a cafe racer, maybe combine the good parts of several into a Frankenstein mish-mash that will inspire, that may start the newest trend of what is cool. -bad Uncle Monkey

We get swept away in new ideas, new projects. It is a guilty distraction obscuring what really was our goal, our focus. We all have those rough diamonds in our garages and in our lives. Things we have neglected or are overlooking that are waiting for us to breathe new life into them, to revisit those once new ideas that inspired us to acquire them in the first place. My advice this week is to take stock of what is around you. Maybe

30th Annual Cystic Fibrosis 2014 ‘Ride for the Breath of Life’ Charity Motorcycle Run

Dear Friends of the CF Bike Run: In 1985, Timothy Leier peered out of his hospital window watching a group of motorcyclists ride by. Timothy was suffering from Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Suddenly an idea struck him – wouldn’t it be great if bikers could raise money for CF? His sister, Lorna, took his idea and turned it into an annual event. Eight bikers planned and participated in that first run in 1985. Timothy never got the chance to see his dream come true, as he died after losing his fight with the disease. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the most common lifethreatening hereditary disease of children and young adults. CF occurs when the child inherits two genes with the condition, one from each parent. Approximately one in every 1800 children is born with CF in Canada and 1 in 20 Canadians carry the gene. Currently over 2,000 patients - children and adults - attend CF clinics in Canada. Once again thank-you for your support by helping us raise over $500,000 for CF research.

Quite honestly, OEM motorcycle horns are rather pathetic and most motorists driving with windows rolled up and the radio blasting won’t even hear your warning cry. The Screaming Banshee is designed to overcome this limitation while still allowing stock horns to bleat out their pleasant greetings.

The Wolo Bad Boy is a single unit air compressor and horn coupled with Screaming Banshee’s proprietary control unit that, depending upon the switch settings, allows the horn and the high-beam headlamp to pulse or remain constant when the horn button is pressed on the motorcycle handgrip. Furthermore, depending on the jumper switch settings, the air horn and headlamp can either instantly engage or be delayed by 0.15 seconds. The delay allows the OEM horn to be blipped for short greetings or gentle warnings and—to those who care—comply with DOT regulations.

connections. The compressor and horn measures approximately 3.5 x 4.5 x 5.0 inches and weighs 1.7 lbs, and puts out about 120 decibels. The control unit measures 3.25 x 2 x 1 inches and weighs about 5 ounces. The proprietary control unit has 30A fuse and two jumper switches. They jumpers are used to select either immediate or a 0 .15-second delay and whether the horn and lights pulsate or remain constantly engaged when the horn button on the handgrip is pressed. Every bike is different; every bike has its own space considerations. The size of the Wolo air horn didn’t allow placement on Beemer number one or number two. Even on my full-fairing Ducati some adaption was necessary: repositioning the primary horn and fabricating a custom bracket. The manufacturer estimates that only an hour is required to install the system, but this

Ken Aiken Reviews The Wolo Bad Boy assumes that sufficient room is available on a bike and, if so, the installation is quite straightforward. However, there are special considerations. Although the control unit is built to military specs and circuitry is embedded in resin to protect it against dust, moisture, and vibration, I recommend

that it be positioned so it doesn’t accumulate water and potentially short circuit either the fuse or the jumper switches. Likewise, the horn should face downward or backwards so it doesn’t swallow water when riding in the rain. I also suggest coating the jumpers and base of the fuse with dielectric grease to prevent corrosion and short circuits. It is advisable to have some 18-gauge wire, crimp connectors, and heat-shrink tubing on hand before beginning the installation. However, don’t feel daunted: detailed instructions and a video are available for downloading at www.screamingbanshee.com.

AT 120 decibels the horn is much louder than stock and sounds like a Peterbilt bearing down on offending drivers. The flashing high beam does capture the attention of oncoming drivers and those rare individuals who actually use their rearview mirrors. The 0.15-second delay enables a rider to blip the OEM horn out of politeness. This $109.99 —available in black or chrome—accessory could save your life, and that’s a pretty strong endorsement.

Wolo Horn_3067: Installation required repositioning of the stock horn on my Ducati (fairing removed). Colorcode “miracle tape” was used to create waterproof harnesses for the wiring.

B.A.D. Ride (Bikers Against Despair) This will be the 5th year that I am riding to support this cause. I am helping raise funds for The B.A.D. Ride (Bikers Against Despair) on Sunday, May 25, 2014.

I ride a Motorcycle with my daughter – Iris, on the back (who has ridden with me every year in the past) and I am asking you to please assist me by donating to this worthy cause. If you are willing and able, please sponsor me online and help me reach my personal goal of $11,000.00. I would appreciate any sponsorship dollars that you would be willing to send my way in assisting me to reach my goal. If you prefer to donate via cheque, please make it out to: Toronto Distress Centres and you can send it to me and I will forward it to them at: Bob Redinger 230 Dundas Street East, Mississauga, Ontario L5A 1W9 or if you prefer, you can send it directly to them at the address below. If you send it direct, please make sure to mark my name on the bottom or back of the cheque (for tracking purposes).

I ask you to give as generously to this cause as you can, because the need is there and it is real. My wife Brenda and sons Eric, Alex and Oren have volunteered in the past and will be involved this year as well. By being involved with this cause, our children understand and have learned that giving of your time and effort to worthwhile charitable causes is important. This cause also means a lot our family on a personal level as well.

This cause is a Win-Win for all as it is the main event that raises money needed to keep the Distress Centres of Toronto Funded.

Please click below to visit my personal web page. https://secure.thebadride.com/bobredinger-p-1363.html Thank you in advance for your donation and know that it is deeply appeciated, -Bob Redinger

With that funding, they provide no charge grief counseling for suicide victim survivors. There was a recent article in the Toronto Star about a volunteer that assists with the phone calls that come in. They provide a service that needs additional funding to continue to operate.

This is the only charitable event and cause that I put my heart and soul into and that I ever ask anyone to support. So, please give me your financial support and donate now! FYI: For every $1,000 we raise, a BBQ rib meal is earned for the participants to eat at the end of the 3 hour long ride. This will also allow Iris, Eric, Alex, Oren, Brenda and I to eat Ribs. Online sponsorship is a fast and easy way to support, but please note that this does provide the foundation with your email contact for future emails.

PEI News / Events price during the Afghanistan mission in efforts to preserve freedom for others. As part of this highway dedication we are pleased to announce that the “Portraits of Heroes” display will part of the weekend activities.

“Reflections of Freedom” Theme For ATLANTICADE 2014 (Summerside, P.E.) – Many of you have been asking about the theme for our 2014 festival. Over the past two years we introduced a theme to give some focus to our event. In 2012 it was “A Salute To The Military History of PEI” and in 2013 we paid tribute to first responders “Everyday Heroes”. Our 8th annual gathering of motorcycle enthusiasts will notice several distinct aspects during their time with us. Firstly 2014 is a full-year celebration on PEI as the province marks the 150th anniversary of the signing of the agreement to create a country, which occurred three years later in 1867. Secondly, you will notice more CAV members in attendance this year as they hold their annual general meeting. Of course CAV has always had a strong representation at our event but it will be increased this year given the hosting of the national meeting in Summerside.

Atlanticade, in conjunction with the CAV organization, Confederation Bridge, and the Province is working out the details of a moving tribute to honour these heroes of freedom as part of the Confederation Bridge Cruise. Details will be announced soon! Finally, the freedom of the open road, wind in your face and the blending of one with “Mother Nature” is something we all embrace. Whether you reflect on the creation of a democracy some 150 years ago, pay respect and gratitude to those who have sacrificed for the freedom of our country and others abroad, or simply absorb the feeling that comes with the open road, the concept of “freedom” will be at the forefront. So here it is the theme for our 2014 festival “Reflections of Freedom”. See you all in Summerside, PEI. For more information on the festival go to www. atlanticade.ca

The CAV organization has also been lobbying the Province to dedicate a portion of the provincial highway system, “Highway of Heroes”. Their efforts have been rewarded and the official announcement will be coming soon with the actual dedication to take place during Atlanticade. Of course, Highway of Heroes, is all about paying tribute to those Canadians who paid the ultimate
