A NOTE FROM OUR CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

It is the time of year again for you to renew or collect your new multi-year 16s Membership Card.

As we move into our 101st year, we felt the inclusion of community tribute was appropriate for the design of the 2023 Membership Card, and as such it carries artwork created by a local school student depicting the outline of our unique lakescape. More detail around this image and its concept can be found further into this magazine.

Aligned with this years renewal period, we have incorporated an exciting membership promotion that could see you wining a share in $6,000 cash that will be drawn in Club from qualified entries on Monday, 3 April 2023. Eligibility for this promotion is by simply swiping your new 2023 Membership card at one of our Ascent Rewards Kiosks and updating your details. If you prefer to avoid the reception queues there is always the option of renewing online.

We have been thrilled that our recent sailing calendar has been brimming with events. On pages 5 and 6 we outline the specifics of our Sailors achievements at recent Championships.

While we are getting closer to unveiling our new look ground floor offering mid-March, right now Summer is still in full swing and it’s a great time to dine and relax at your Club. Although we are still under some construction we continue to have a broad range of menu offerings, and our value dining promotion “Summer Saver” is still available for those wanting to use their Ascent Points for discounts. The new year sees the return of live shows and concerts to Belmont 16s, kicking off with some fantastic Australian tributes and icons with Aussie Crawl File, Whispering Jack and the Kevin Bloody Wilson show. Tickets to one of our many concerts and shows currently scheduled for 2023 start from just $25. Keep reading and you will find a complete listing of our upcoming shows and concerts.

This Member’s Magazine also demonstrates that we have spent a lot of time in the lead up to 2023 bettering our understanding of our community and its needs. We are excited to be launching a revised approach to local sporting sponsorships, commencing early stages of a sustainability initiative and are thrilled to be working with Greg Page (the Original Yellow Wiggle) and local non-for profit group Hunter Heart Safe in investing $25,000 into our Heartfelt Community AED donation. Reading on you will find more details around each of these projects that we are so proud to be sharing.

THE BASIC SAILING LINGO AT BELMONT 16S

TACKERS A fun introductory, games-based ‘kids learn to sail’ program designed for kids with little-to-no sailing experience. No need for a club membership to participate. All the sailing equipment is provided. Ages: 7-12.

PELICANS An Entry Club level racing boat in a mentored, safe, and fun environment. The Pelican is a two person junior training boat, it’s a great boat to learn basic racing skills on. Sailing is conducted on a Saturday morning with a mixture of both competitive and fun races during the season. Ages: 6-15.

O’PEN SKIFF

The O’pen Skiff is a fantastic boat for young sailors to experience the joy of sailing. It is fast, exciting, and fun to sail yet simple to rig and maintain. Sailing is conducted on a Saturday Morning with a mixture of both competitive and fun races during the season. Ages: 6-15.

FLYING 11S

The Flying 11 is an exciting, light weight racing dinghy, competitively sailed by 2 people. It is an excellent follow-on boat for junior classes. Ages: 6 years and up.

CHERUBS The Cherub is a 2-person dinghy with an asymmetric spinnaker and one sailor on trapeze. Cherubs have State & National Championships mixed with a vibrant social scene. Club racing is conducted on Saturday afternoons. Ages: Generally, 14 years and up.

16FT SKIFFS 16ft skiffs have a three-person crew, two on trapeze, and large mast head asymmetrical spinnakers. There are currently over 80 boats registered through 9 clubs and regattas regularly attract fleets of up to 45 boats. Club Racing is conducted on a Sunday afternoon. Ages: 12 years and over.

THE FUTURE OF SAILING AT BELMONT 16s IS BRIGHT

We are humbled to see that our Sailing Community is growing. Our learn to sail Tackers program remains popular, continuing to sell out with participants transitioning into their next level of junior sailing.

Our Flying 11 fleet were strong competitors in the recent Flying 11 Nationals. Congratulations to “Cheeky”, sailed by Marshall Day and Leo Pirret who finished 1st overall. Notable mention to “Giggle & Hoot”, sailed by Keisha Day and Amy Ellis, who placed 2nd overall and were the 1st all-girls crew.

Also in January, we had 10 16ft Skiffs head to Manly to battle it out with some of the best sailors in the country. In a tough fleet of 47 boats, SKE Electrical was the highest placed Belmont skiff, coming 4th overall.

Our Cherub fleet dominated earlier this year at the Cherub Australian Championships, with Harden Up 3170 – Banjo Nicholson and Thomas Steenson taking out the overall Championship. We also came away with 3rd place, Veterans Champion, Cadet Champion (under 18), Junior Champion (skipper between 18-21) along with First Female Skipper. In total Belmont had 8 in the top 10 total standings, showing the amount of talent we have amongst our Cherub fleet.

Currently our Skiff fleet has the strongest numbers seen in many years. We have 33 skiffs registered and some of the best sailors on Lake Macquarie. With such a strong growth and vast achievements this season, we felt that sitting down with our Sailing Manager Nadine Steenson would be a wonderful way to share some of those lesser-known titbits about her, our Club, our sailors and our sport.

Q&A WITH BELMONT 16s SAILING MANAGER NADINE STEENSON

How long have you sailed?

I started Sailing when I was 8. I then became actively involved with the Club again when my eldest son started sailing when he was also 8. Wanting to be involved in my kids sport I then began volunteering on rescue boats and in different roles. Now I enjoy watching all three of my kids and my husband sail at Belmont 16s.

What brings you joy in your role?

There are so many things I love in my role to be honest. Watching the progression and confidence build in the juniors as they grow and learn, seeing bonds and friendships between the junior sailor’s form and the fact that there is a real community feel amongst our sailors and volunteers brings me joy and contentment. This sailing community is truly special.

What is your favourite Sailing “Class”?

Tough one, but it would have to be the Flying 11s. It is a great intermediate class where you can sail for fun and socially or you can be competitive. The kids learn so much in this class about regattas, race management and team work.

What is something you find challenging about your role or sailing?

Regattas/ championships are really rewarding to host, but a lot of effort goes into working with different classes and organising all the different aspects of hosting a regatta, as well as ensuring we have enough volunteers and on-water resources.

What’s a Trend you can see progressing in Skiff sailing?

There is a lot of interest from new families wanting to get involved and learn to sail. We are seeing a real growth in all classes across

the board, particularly our Junior Pelicans and O`pen Skiffs. We are also starting to see a lot of younger sailors going into the 16ft Skiff Class coming out of Flying 11s, this really great for the class and great to see young sailors transitioning through.

What about Sailing are you most proud of at Belmont 16s?

In our Juniors, hands down it’s the introduction of the Tackers program and the increase in our Junior Pelican and O`pen Skiff fleet.

About 4 seasons ago, Junior sailor numbers were on the decline, now these classes are strong with 25 pelicans registered this season alongside 26 registrations in the O`pen Skiff fleet. I also love seeing Belmont get up in Championships. I see them work so hard week in and out and then when they achieve on a broader scale at state and national championships providing them with even more motivation to go even harder.

With our Seniors, hosting the 2021-22 Australian 13ft & 16ft Skiff Championships was fantastic to see 16ft Skiff Sailing receive so much coverage in the media. It was also thrilling to see Olympic Gold Medallists, World and National Champions, all battling it out on our very own Belmont Bay. The Centenary Celebrations were also awesome to be a part of, to see 100 years of history and all the milestones the club has achieved since that very first skiff race, was quite incredible.

GROW THEIR CONFIDENCE, FRIENDSHIP AND SKILLS

Usually we feature a page about our ‘Tackers’: Kids Learn To Sail program to inform our readers that registration is now open. However, this year we are just too popular!

A Month into 2023 and our Tackers school holiday program throughout January, February, March and April is completely booked! But we know there are more kids out there who are just busting at the seams to get on the lake and learn how to sail.

That’s why we are opening a waiting list for next rounds Tackers program!

Programs are either 4 or 5 days during the school holidays or over 8 – 10 weeks during term time commencing September. Each course is focused on having fun and playing games while learning the basics of sailing. Ages 7 to 12 years. Tackers Kids don’t need to have any sailing experience or club membership to participate.

LOCAL STUDENTS FLAGSHIP ARTWORK FEATURES ON 2023 MEMBERSHIP CARD

In 2022 Belmont 16s initiated a school based art program, ‘Creative Canvas Competition’. Students from 14 schools in the eastern Lake Macquarie catchment area were invited to create artwork that represented something “Uniquely Lake Macquarie” to them. We were overwhelmed at receiving 25 wonderful and thoughtful submissions. Members and visitors were charged with voting for their favourite art pieces from finalists, displayed on large signs located within the Club over a 3 week period. Local school student 12 year-old Sabine of Valentine Public school secured the most votes with her artwork that took 3 days to design.

Using an indigenous styled dot painting method in acknowledgment of traditional land owners the Awabakal People, Sabine also included animals that she has seen in and around the lake. In winning, Sabine secured a $5,000 donation for her school, to enhance a nature play area for all future students, as well as a gift voucher to OfficeWorks for herself. The process and feedback from this competition was so impactful that it was decided Sabine’s artwork should be used on our 2023 membership card.

Last November the Belmont 16s team received a very special delivery related to our long history here in Lake Macquarie. Maree Waddingham a descendant of one of our very first Life Members Alfred Waddingham, came across these precious Membership pins and decided to graciously donate them back to the Club.

Alfred Waddingham Senior was the Club’s President from the 1939-40 season through to the 1943-44 Season. His interest in the Club was a result of his 3 son’s being sailors at the Club. These years were particularly challenging times to be sailing club president, while the Club continued to sail throughout the war years, many sailors enlisted in the military. Due to a Federal Government decree during 1942, all classes of water craft had to be impounded due to the imminent danger of Japanese invasion. At Belmont Sailing Club, the 1941-42 season was also cut short, but luckily not before the Championship and Point Score races had been decided.

OUR $25,000 HEARTFELT GIFT TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES

Belmont 16s recently donated $25,000 to local not-for profit organisation Hunter Heart Safe to assist in the installation of 7 100% community accessible Automated External Defibrillator machines throughout eastern Lake Macquarie public spaces.

Dr Mark Miller, founder of Hunter Heart Safe addresses the importance of AEDs located in areas without restriction “Cardiac arrest can happen anywhere, any time and while there are some AEDs that already established in places like Woolworths and Coles, these locations are not always open, therefore these devices are not always of assistance”

These AED machines display easy to read instructions and are fitted with geo tracking should one be removed from it’s shield or case. Heavy consideration was taken in the process

of the strategic placement of the defibrillators locations. Ensuring that they are in spaces where people frequent in volume and where access by first responders might be delayed.

For this project Hunter Heart Safe teamed up with AED suppliers Heart of the Nation, founded by former orignial Wiggle, Greg Page (adding explanation as to the highly effective bright shade of yellow the AEDs will be found in!). Since moving on from being an active member of the Wiggles, Greg has dedicated his time to raising awareness about sudden cardiac arrest and the importance of the “Chain of Survival” after his own cardiac experience in recent years.

“Heart of the Nation wishes to thank Belmont 16s and Hunter Heart Safe for working together on this great initiative that sees 7 community access AEDs (defibrillators) installed around

the Lake Macquarie region. Having 24hr, 7 days a week access to an AED may mean the difference between life and death for someone, so to know that these devices will be available is a huge boom for the community!

THE HUNTER HEART SAFE JOURNEY:

DR. MARK MILLER CONTINUES TO TEACH LIFE SAVING DETAILS AND TECHNIQUES

The main objectives of Hunter Heart Safe are to increase awareness of the importance of Sudden Cardiac Arrest in our community and to promote bystander intervention with hands only CPR and AED use. Mark continues to explain “If bystanders don’t act and simply wait for paramedics to arrive, the cardiac arrest victim almost always dies. My ED workmates and I created Hunter Heart Safe in response to the poor outcomes of cardiac arrest we see in our work, often due to lack of bystander action.”

Hunter Heart Safe are back to offering our free training seminars monthly in partnership with Belmont 16s, and have now allocated all 7 of the AED’s that Belmont 16s purchased and donated to them in the community. So what’s next for Hunter Heart safe you ask? With the planned NSW Ambulance roll out of the GoodSAM app in 2023, they hope to facilitate the recruitment of a local army of first responders, willing to step up and act in the event of a cardiac arrest. Ultimately we would all like to see improvements locally in bystander CPR rates and AED usage which will eventually lead to improvements in the current abysmal 9% survival rate after cardiac arrest.

Dr. Mark Miller, Emergency Medicine Specialist at John Hunter and Lake Macquarie Private Hospital has lived in the Lake Macquarie area for most of his life. Mark is one of the founders of the local charity, Hunter Heart Safe, which started operating in 2018 and now has over 250 volunteer health care workers providing free CPR training to the community.

In 2014, Mark was involved in the resuscitation of Dr David Durrheim in Green Point Reserve. With the help of another bystander, he performed hands only CPR for 17 minutes until paramedics arrived and successfully defibrillated David. After a coronary stent, David made a full recovery and is now working tirelessly in the battle against COVID-19 and other public health emergencies around the world.“David’s cardiac arrest helped me realise the importance of bystander action in cardiac arrest. The delay to defibrillation, even in a suburban area was concerningaccess to more publically accessible AEDs is critical” stated Mark.

MOST CARDIAC ARRESTS OCCUR IN THE HOME, SO CHANCES ARE THE VICTIM WILL BE SOMEONE YOU KNOW AND LOVE. HERE ARE A FEW POINTS TO REMEMBER AS A BYSTANDER:

• Try and remain calm in order to remain effective

• Call 000 which will bring paramedics with a defibrillator

• Listen to the 000 call taker, as they will instruct you in delivering effective chest compressions at 100 per minute

• AED’s have clear instructions, if you know one is located nearby – use it

ENHANCE YOUR LIFE SAVING SKILLS:

Hunter Heart Safe volunteers have delivered free cardiac arrest training to over 2,000 community members- both adults and children. The messages and skills can be delivered in under one hour and we try to talk through and overcome many of the common fears that bystanders may have.

Hunter Heart Safe together with Belmont 16s hope to train 1,000 more members of our community in 2023. Please register to attend a session to learn these valuable skills that could save a life. Anyone who attended the sessions in 2020 is also welcome to return and revise their knowledge and skills.

BELMONT 16s CONSTRUCTION UPDATE FOR THE NEW YEAR

Heading into our tenth month of the Centenary Project redevelopment, we are finally seeing the new lakeside Club shape take form. The Eastern ground floor dining space is moving quickly into the fitout stage. If you have visited the Club in the new year, you would have seen the new SALT cashier reopen with a splash of the coastal inspired interior design peeking through.

The children’s play area has doubled in size and will host a fun indoor cubby house, while the waterfront open-air courtyard has just had door frames installed, giving it definition. The massive bespoke skylights have been fitted to the first floor which will allow natural light seep all the way through the Club, thanks to a stunning architectural void. Our next phase will see construction focus shift to updates in the main bar area as well as allowing access to the first-floor auditorium via one of the new sleek staircases, located towards the front of the Club.

TASTY KOREAN BULGOGI BEEF SALAD SERVES 2

1) Ingredients

500g sirloin steak thinly sliced fat removed.

Beef Marinade

1 cos lettuce chopped or leaves of your choice

I small carrot thinly sliced

1 Lebanese cucumber thinly sliced

½ Bunch of radishes thinly sliced

6 cherry tomatoes halved

1 capsicum julienne

6 snow peas rough cut

Snow pea shoots

1tsp sesame seeds

2 Shallots thinly sliced

3 tbs dressing

2) Beef Marinade

2 Nashi pears or sweet red apples

1 medium brown onion

4 cloves of minced garlic

1 teaspoon minced ginger

3 chopped shallots

3 tbs soy sauce

3 tbs water

4 tbs brown sugar

2 tbs Mirin

A pinch of ground black pepper

1 tbs sesame oil

2tsp sesame seeds

3) Method

In a blender, blend all ingredients except sesame seeds, until no lumps. Marinate beef in Bulgogi marinade for a minimum of 2 hours preferably overnight.

4) Salad Dressing

1tbs soy sauce

1 tbs rice vinegar or white vinegar

2tsp castor sugar

1 tsp sesame oil

3 tbs olive oil

5) Method

Mix all the ingredients together and stir well before use.

6) Final Preparation

Gather salad ingredients and toss together in a bowl. Pre-heat BBQ plate then drain beef from marinade. BBQ beef on moderate to high heat until cooked to your liking. Remove from heat and serve on the salad, then dress with the dressing and finish with sesame seeds and spring onions.

Five families, from a tight-knit community with a mission is to make quality beer that brings great people together. This adventure began on a Saturday arvo like many others, hanging out in the neighbour’s yard, enjoying a couple of coldies. A game of ‘Yardzee’ saw the guys declaring their team ‘Yard Kings’ and it was a few beers later, that it was dreamt up the idea to open a brewery together.

Yard Kings Co-owner Scott Robertson’s uncle was an Australian Skiff Champion, Ron Davies, who sailed on the renowned “Gazeway”, the vessel that is commemorated in the Boat Shed Bar as a repurposed feature table.
