As we look back on the past 12 months, I’m thrilled to share that our Club has now been fully operational in our beautifully redeveloped facility for over a year. Skiffs, Speed & Strategy
Belmont Delivers Thrills in Sprint Series
The Tooheys Ultra Australian16ft Skiff Sprint Series returned to Belmont 16s Sailing Club on Saturday, 1 February 2025, bringing high-speed racing and fierce competition to Belmont Bay.
Belmont 16s Sailing Club has hosted this annual event for decades and it remains a standout on the sailing calendar for its exhilarating sprint format. The short-course racing demands precision, teamwork and split-second decision-making as crews battle for position in everchanging conditions.
Race day saw warm, humid weather, with temperatures reaching 29°C. A steady breeze kept crews on their toes, providing perfect conditions for fast and tactical racing.
SprintSeries
SprintSeries
Belmont-based boat and crew, Insight Building Services NAVS took out the win as reigning champions, skipper Rod Carter and his crew of Andrew Stone and Rob Flanagan were determined to defend their title, though the strong fleet including Olympic-level sailors meant competition was intense.
“The wind tends to change a bit; it doesn’t always blow in one direction, so we’re always trying to pick up the high side of the breeze. Once we hit the first mark, it’s about getting a good spinnaker set and trying to clear out.”
- Rod Carter, Insight Building Services NAVS
Having sailed 16ft skiffs for a decade, Carter credits his lifelong passion for the sport to his early years. As a young boy, he saved up money from his paper route, unsure of how to spend it until his father suggested buying a sailboat. That decision sparked a love for sailing that led to competitive racing.
“There’s nothing but you and the water out there, and we go pretty quick at times — much faster than you’d expect.”
-
Rod Carter, Insight Building Services NAVS
Belmont 16s Sailing Club runs racing every weekend from September to March, with the 16ft skiff class known for its elite competition. The club also runs the Tackers Junior Sailing Program, a fun, games-based introduction to sailing for kids aged 7 to 12, with no prior experience needed.

Partnering with Survivors R Us to fund essential programs for those facing domestic violence, homelessness, and unemployment.
Belmont 16s Sailing Club is proud to announce a donation of $5,625 to Survivors R Us, a not-for-profit charity dedicated to supporting survivors of domestic violence, homelessness, and unemployment. This contribution is specifically allocated to fund their ongoing “Dignity Bags” project, which provides essential bathroom and hygiene products to men, women and children seeking assistance.
The “Dignity Bags” initiative has been a consistent effort for the past seven years, supplying basic hygiene necessities to individuals in need, regardless of funding availability. Our donation aims to ensure the continuity of this vital program, reflecting Belmont 16s Sailing Club’s commitment to supporting community organisations that make a meaningful impact.
We are so grateful to Belmont 16s and Club Grants for granting us $5,625 to continue purchasing essential toiletry items to hand out to our clients in need. These basics can help our clients with everyday needs, like cleaning their teeth, giving them back some dignity. Without your support, our in-need clients would be going without these essential toiletry items. Over 1,100 people received a dignity bag from us in 2024. The Beecham Family Legacy
Generational Dedication to Belmont 16s Sailing Club
In the heart of Belmont 16s Sailing Club lays a rich tapestry of history, tradition and generational dedication. Few families have embodied this as profoundly as the Beecham family. Spanning three generations in sailing at Belmont 16s Sailing Club, the Beechams have been pivotal to the growth and legacy of the Club. At the centre of this legacy is Gary Beecham, a lifelong member who has carried forward the enduring contributions of his late father, A.J. Beecham.
A.J. Beecham joined Belmont 16s Sailing Club in 1938, only 16 years after the Club’s inception in 1922. His passion for sailing saw him actively involved in skiff racing for over two decades, then moved to nurture the upcoming sailors as well as being known as a tough but fair umpire, many at the time remembering his holler of “Yer out! Take her home!” call. His influence extended far beyond the water. In 1949, A.J. was appointed Club Secretary and became the Club’s first self-appointed Publicity Officer. His enthusiasm for promoting the Club was unmatched, ensuring that every race, milestone and achievement was documented and shared across various platforms.
A.J.’s dedication to preserving the Club’s history led to an extraordinary project, the meticulous creation of 35 scrapbooks filled with newspaper clippings, photographs, programs, awards and more. These scrapbooks became the cornerstone of Belmont 16s Sailing Club’s historical records
A.J. Beecham
Gary Beecham
“A.J.
Beecham is one of those men who built the foundation of Belmont 16s Sailing Club, driven by his passion for promoting the Club and preserving its history. Gary continues that legacy with equal dedication, ensuring our rich heritage endures. The Beecham family’s multi-generational commitment is deeply embedded in the fabric of Belmont 16s Sailing Club.”
- Scott Williams, CEO, Belmont

Sailing Club
and were instrumental in compiling the Club’s Centenary booklet published in 2022 to commemorate its 100th anniversary. His foresight and passion for archiving ensured that the Club’s legacy would be preserved for future generations with accuracy and plenty of variation, giving such a broad view of Club life over the years.
In 1954, A.J. achieved another milestone when he became Belmont 16s’ first Provisional Licensee, this pivotal moment laid the foundation for the Club’s transformation into a multifaceted venue, in line with moving from its original location to its current site at Mill Creek. With the addition of bar facilities and later, restaurants, Belmont 16s Sailing Club evolved into the community hub it is today.
Following A.J.’s passing in 1994, Gary Beecham became the custodian of his father’s treasured scrapbooks, recognising their immense value. Gary
has diligently preserved these historical records, safeguarding stories and memories that might otherwise have been lost. His commitment to the Club’s history has ensured that members today can connect with Belmont 16s Sailing Club’s rich past.
The Beecham legacy is a testament to the power of community and the enduring impact of those who dedicate their lives to preserving it. As we continue to evolve as a Club, we remain deeply grateful for members like Gary and A.J., whose efforts have ensured that our history remains alive and celebrated.
Gary’s contributions to Belmont 16s extend beyond his role as a historian. A life member himself since 2017, Gary has played a significant part in many aspects of the Club both on and off the water. His deep connection to the Club was highlighted during the Centenary Project’s Life Members’ Engagement Day, where he shared heartfelt stories about the enduring friendships and sense of community that Belmont 16s Sailing Club has provided over the years to sailors and the wider community alike.
To honour his contributions, a safety & rescue boat has been named after Gary, a fitting tribute to someone who has been a steady and guiding presence within the Club for decades.
In November 2024, we sat down with Gary to delve into his father’s scrapbooks, uncovering a treasure trove of Belmont 16s history. The stories, photographs and clippings offer a unique insight into the Club’s journey and the people who have shaped it. We are now exploring options to digitise these vital records, ensuring they remain accessible for future generations.

The Story Behind Your 2025 Membership Card!
A Snapshot of History
Celebrating Our Centenary Project
Each year, we put a lot of thought into the image that graces our Belmont 16s membership card. It’s never a decision we take lightly and we make sure to never use the same style two years in a row. This year’s card has a special story behind it, tied to our Club’s historic Centenary Project.
Our initial plan was to feature a stunning shot of the newly completed renovation as the hero image for the 2024 card. However, when it came time to take the photo we hit a snag, the external western waterfront of the Club was
reveal for 2025 when the Club would be fully finished and ready to shine.
The photo on this year’s card was taken in September 2024 at around 4pm by a drone camera about 50 metres out over Belmont Bay. The light was perfect, capturing our beautifully renovated Club in all its glory.
It’s the first time in over 17 years that we’ve featured the full Club on our membership card and we felt it was the perfect way to celebrate this milestone.
So when you swipe your 2025 card, you’re holding a little piece of Belmont 16s history in your hand. Here’s to another fantastic year as part of our Club community!
