MEET YOUR SUMMER BOX ARTIST

Canadian artist Sabina Fenn spent her childhood making things out of paper maché and old recycling, and later turned to acrylic landscape as a way to cope with the changes teenagers go through. A student of life, Sabina continues to develop her art and is now working with acrylic and oil paints. Go to know Sabina through a Q&A with the BE KIND. team.

Q: What inspires your art?

A: I’m inspired by nature first and foremost, the little things in nature to be specific… I love the way tree branches dance in the wind or how they look a little blurred with the sun peeking through behind them. I’m inspired by the warmth of the sun and how it changes the light of day, and how the colors of life around us are shaped by the sun. The little bits of beauty in our everyday lives that we tend to overlook are what really inspire me!

Q: When did you start creating art? Why did you start?

A: My earliest memories of creating art are from when I was about 4 years old, in school making paper maché or collages. I would watch

the show “Art Attack” and spend my whole Sunday afternoons making as many crafts as I could, I just loved it. I never really thought I had much of a purpose or reason for making these things in the beginning, I was just a child playing and experimenting, it felt natural for me, like it was a part of my DNA.

Q: What kind of message do you want to pass on to the world through your art?

A: It’s quite subtle, but when people have my art in their homes, my only hope is that it brings a little more joy to their day to day. I don’t plan on trying to change the world with my art, rather just to make a small impact on people’s lives with a little more of that happy and peaceful feeling.

Q: What’s your favorite summer memory?

A: I have so many, from swimming and playing around the backyard with my brother and dog, to spending time by the lake at my grandparents’ cottage, but I’ll tell you about a recent one because it just makes me feel warm and smile when I think back to it… Last summer my partner and I went on a road trip

to Gaspésie, Quebec. We took our dog Bella and at this time my partner still had a pick up truck for work so it was plenty spacious! We drove along the coasts of the ocean and camped in provincial parks. It was just such a special and lovely trip for me, as I had been there when I was very young with my family. Our dog Bella is quite a lazy pup by nature, she loved to sleep on the back seat and rest her head in between our chairs. We also had some of the best seafood I’ve ever had!
