MEET YOUR BOX ARTIST

While living in Paris for a season, illustrator Michelle Christensen was inspired by the arrondissement of Belleville. Belleville was a place full of diversity, which reminded Michelle of her childhood abroad in Asia and Africa, so she took that inspiration home with her and named her brand My Little Belleville. Michelle always wanted to have a little bit of Paris with her, wherever she went. Michelle began MLB in Salt Lake City with her signature faces and illustrations put on ceramics and other delightful objects. This caught the eye of Anthropologie, who soon carried her work. Michelle moved to London, UK and continued working and selling her wares from her tiny studio apartment and selling to local shops and in markets (like Portobello Road and Renegade London).

We asked Michelle about her work and wanted to share a few of her responses with you!

What inspires your art?

I am very inspired by traveling and by my childhood in Asiaespecially Beijing, China. I lived in Paris for a few months after college and my brand My Little Belleville is inspired by the arrondissement of Belleville, which is quite a diverse area of Paris.

When did you start creating art? Why did you get into it?

I was young when I knew I wanted to be an artist. I grew up in a home that inspired creating, music, and art. My parents took me to art galleries from quite a young age, which I found boring at the time, but definitely came to love. Being an artist has always felt like my calling.

What does the artwork you created for BE KIND. mean to you?

The theme of gardening inspired this idea of a group of people cultivating something beautiful together. I loved the idea of oversized flowers and vegetables next to these little people, which feels very exaggerated and fun

What kind of message do you want to pass on through your art?

Art has a way of comforting me through its visual aspect rather than by words describing it. Sometimes when you see a piece of art it just fills a void of understanding that perhaps you can’t find words to describe. I love how that happens for me and I hope that can happen through my work. I want to be able to inspire and uplift others whether it is through one of my children’s books, a piece of clothing I’ve designed, or simply a stand alone illustration or product.

Tell us about some of your past work.

I began my design journey by putting my illustrations onto found objects, mostly ceramics. I painted them and sold them online and in markets. I was picked up by Anthropologie and Terrain and they sold these in their stores. I have done a lot of custom illustration, comics, jewelry. I came away knowing so much more and I really began focusing on my own brand the past 4 years and developing sustainable products.
