After two very similar away performances in the last two weeks it is clear we are creating chances but need that killer instinct in front of goal. As a group of players, we keep saying that the harder we try the luckier we will become. We certainly do not deserve to have so many things that have gone against us so far this season, but we have been resilient and positive in our approach to every match. We need to be realistic in the fact that some of the teams in this league we cannot compete with financially, but we certainly can give it a good go when it comes to the 90 minutes.

Since our last home game, I have released Danny Dubidat and we wish him all the best to whatever club he ends up at. We have been scouring the leagues to try and get players in to strengthen and keep things fresh in the dressing room. This has been particularly difficult with the position we are in and the packages we can offer, but some players may see it as a step up and take the opportunity.

As some of you may have seen the next phase of development has started at the Oval. This will progress the facilities to enable us to have new toilets including disabled facilities too. Neill and the board keep improving the infrastructure of the football club to make the community experience better.

Once the toilets are complete the full modernisation and refurbishment of the club house will begin making it a pleasant place to spend time.

Stay positive and keep cheering the greenboys on.

Welcome

REDDITCH UNITED FC The Club ‘The Reds’ is one of the longest established football clubs in the Midlands, starting out as Redditch Town in the Birmingham Combination League in 1891 and being crowned first winners of the Worcestershire Senior Cup in 1894. The club prospered as Redditch in the 1930’s and again 20 years later when they were Birmingham Combination champions in 1952 and 1955. In 1971, United was added to the name and in November of that year, the club reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time in their history. A record crowd of 4,500 rammed into the Valley Stadium to see the Reds draw 1-1 with Division Four side Peterborough United before losing 6-0 in the reply. The following season saw them join the Southern League and were promoted to the Premier Division at the end of the 1975-76 campaign having scored more than 100 goals in the process. The Reds became founder members of the Alliance Premier League at the start of the 1979/80 but struggled against the likes of Barnet and Yeovil Town in what would evolve into the Football Conference. The club then plied its trade in the Southern League for more than 20 years the highlight of which was another run to the first round of the FA Cup in 1989 before losing 3-1 to Conference side Merthyr Tydfil in front of another sell-out crowd.

The club made the headlines at the end of the 1997-98 season, playing nine games in nine days due to a backlog of fixtures brought about by the poor weather. At the end of the 2003/04 season, the Reds clinched an historic double promotion under the guidance of manager Rod Brown. Having secured the Southern League Western Division, the club then won two play-off matches to secure a place in the newly formed Conference North where they stayed for seven seasons. Entrepreneur Chris Swan took control of the club in March 2011, clearing outstanding debts to guarantee its continued survival. Together with his wife Sallie in her role as vice-chairman, Swan began a strategy of developing the club’s community links, working with schools and other organisations across the town and surrounding area. The Junior section was relaunched and there are 50 teams playing under the Redditch United banner including boys, girls and disabled sides in addition to a thriving academy set-up offering full-time courses at the club. The Club has worked hard to forge strategic alliances with the likes of Redditch Borough Council, West Mercia Police, Birmingham City Girls and West Bromwich Albion Foundation with the first community hub established offering football to disadvantaged youngsters. With manager Liam McDonald in charge, the Reds won the Worcestershire Senior Cup and a number of players made the move into full-time football including Jermaine Hylton who joined Swindon Town and Omari Sterling-James who went to Cheltenham Town. Having just missed out on the play-offs in 2014/15, the club finished runners-up the following year only to lose out to neighbours Leamington in the play-offs. In 2016, the club worked with Redditch Borough Council, the FA and the Football Foundation as a £900,000 investment programme was carried out which saw a state-of-the-art 3G playing surface installed as well as substantial upgrades to changing facilities. The new-look facilities were officially opened by Sports Minister Tracey Crouch.

The start of the 2016/17 season also saw former Aston Villa and Walsall striker Darren Byfield take over as manager and a number of exciting commercial deals signed including one with new stadium sponsors Trico.

A long-term partnership with kit suppliers Sondico was also agreed ahead of the 2017/18 campaign. With everything now in place both on and off the field, the future for the Reds has never looked brighter – 1,000 people playing on the 3G pitch each week, 50 different teams, excellent community links and an exciting first team looking to challenge under the guidance of an up and coming manager.

REDDITCH UNITED FC ~ Players Ben Pierce: On loan from West Bromwich Albion, Young keeper with plenty of potential, looking to develop his game while getting senior football with Redditch.

Sam Tye: Recently signed from Highgate United. Previous clubs include Stourbridge and Lye Town. Can play either right or left back.

Brendan Bunn: Exciting young goalkeeper who shows huge promise after impressing during preseason.

Robbie Bunn: Recently signed from Highgate United. Previous clubs include Bromsgrove Sporting and Littleton. Adds a creative spark to the midfield.

Jamie Ashmore: Signed in the summer from local rivals Alvechurch. An expansive footballer who loves the ball at his feet.

Tom Fishwick: Local lad who spent time with Redditch United last season, very dominant centre back who again looks to progress himself this season.

David Reynolds: Recently signed from Worcester City. Prolific goal scorer. Previous clubs include Malvern Town.

Montel Gibson: Spent last season with Redditch United after being released from Notts County, good pace and will go at any defender.

Jordan Mills: Spent last season on loan with the Reds but manager Paul Davis managed obtain him permanently this year after impressing during last year’s spell.

Rob Evans: Strong centre half. Previous clubs include Coleshill Town.

Leam Howards: Signed from Banbury United after previously working under manager Paul Davis at both Banbury and Ardley, a defenders nightmare, energetic and raw.

Ollie Mulders: Son of former Redditch United player Jan Mulders.

Previous clubs include Stourport Swifts and Bewdley Town.

Shaquille Leachman-Whittingham: Very raw wide player who signs after a successful preseason, scored on his debut preseason, can score many goals from outside the box.

Mason Birch: Impressed against us playing for Kidderminster in a friendly. Previous clubs include, Wolves, West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa.

Luke Keen: 20 goals last season to help Bedworth win promotion into the Southern Premier, prolific goal scorer at similar levels.

Milan Butterfield: Impressed against us playing for Kidderminster in a friendly. Previous clubs include Walsall and is currently part of Kidderminster’s U23 side.

Nyeco Sinclair: Young defender singed after a successful preseason, previously with Tamworth’s U23’s a very exciting prospect.

Andrew Parsons: Previous clubs include, Alvechurch and Tividale.

Scored on his Redditch debut against Tamworth in a 3-1victory. A player with exceptional ability, quick and strong.

Max Loveridge: Previous spell with Redditch two years ago, works very hard off the ball and runs games from deep.

Craig was extremely impressed with everything that the club have achieved so far, particulalry with the young people and the wider community.

GREENS BOW OUT OF TROPHY IN MISERY DAY Report by Coventry College student - Ben Bradshaw

A 25th minute strike from forward Aaron Opoku was enough as Bedworth United tasted defeat at the first hurdle of the FA Trophy yesterday on the road at plucky lower league opponents Carlton United. The Greenbacks did everything but get on the scoresheet and can certainly feel aggrieved as a number of key refereeing decisions went against them.

There was little to separate the two sides in the opening 10 minutes in conditions far from ideal, it was very much a midfield battle with neither side able to get a hold of the ball and string together successive passes. The first chance came Bedworth’s way in the 13th minute, Luke Rose’s long throw was flicked on by captain for the afternoon Iyseden Christie towards Elliott Parrott who got to the ball before his marker but could only find the grateful hands of Carlton goalkeeper Jack Steggles.

A minute later as Bedworth broke down the left, Carlton’s Olivier Clark cynically brought down Greens winger Jake Whitmore and deservedly became the first name in the book. The free kick came to nothing as Carlton fashioned their first chance of the game, Aaron Opoku out muscled his marker and ran towards goal but before he could pull the trigger Delroy Gordon got across and cleared.

Bedworth’s defence were warned about the dangers of Opoku and in the 25th minute he paid them pay. A ball over the top

by Olivier Clarke freed Opoku who took a touch before volleying across the stranded Adam Harrison in Bedworth’s goal. An inquest began among the Bedworth players as Opoku was not picked up and had time to pick his spot.

GOAL: Carlton Town 1-0 Bedworth United Bedworth to their credit kept battling and in the 42nd minute really should have had the chance to level the scores from the penalty spot. Christie on the edge of the box skipped past his man and fired a shot towards goal, the ball struck a Carlton defenders hand in the box but the referee waved away the appeals much to the disbelieve of Bedworth players, coaching staff and fans alike.

In the 45th minute Bedworth did have the ball in the back of net after a scramble in the six yard box was knocked over the line but it was chalked off for offside despite appeals. HALF TIME: Carlton Town 1-0 Bedworth United Bedworth had a right to feel incensed by how the first half had planned out and came out in the second half on top, Christie tried to execute a lob over the hosts goalkeeper in the 55th minute but it missed the target and looped over the bar.

Manager Stuart Storer went to his bench for a fresh impetus with Ryan Baldwin replacing Jake Whitmore and Kai Tonge replacing James Hancocks. In the 73rd minute, a Greens free kick was delivered into the box and found Delroy Gordon in space but he fired narrowly wide of the post. It was all Bedworth at this point and Stuart Storer made his final change with Daniel Summerfield making way for former Carlton favourite Alex Troke, an attacking change in a bid to rescue something from the tie. Another set piece from the right for Bedworth evaded everyone in the box and fell at the feet of midfielder Reece Blackmore five yards out who with the goal gaping fired over. Bedworth kept pushing and Rowley thought he had rescued a replay but was denied by a stunning Jack Steggles save late on.

With 90 on the watch, 5 minutes were added but Bedworth despite huffing and puffing could not find that finishing touch.

After a positive result midweek in the Birmingham Senior Cup, the players and management will be disappointed to pick up nothing and now have to prepare for a return to league action and the small matter of a local derby against Barwell on Saturday. FULL TIME: Carlton Town 1-0 Bedworth United

PAUL LATHAM and FAMILY We would like to thank today’s match ball sponsors: PAUL LATHAM and FAMILY who wish to honour the memory of Paul’s father, Les Latham, the former Wolves, Aston Villa and Coventry City centre half. Les was also manager of both today’s clubs Bedworth United and Redditch United. Whilst in Aston Villa’s first team squad in 1939, Les volunteered for the marines and saw action in North Africa and also took part in the D-Day landings. When the order was given “every man for himself” during the invasion of Crete, Les managed to escape on a packed boat which drifted at sea for 11 days before being rescued by a British naval vessel.

Les was also a highly rated opening bowler, playing cricket for Bedworth into his late 50’s. His sporting life also included turning out for Bedworth Rugby club at the Oval whilst attending Bedworth Central school, thus making him one of the few who have played 1st team football, rugby and cricket for Bedworth. He is regarded as one of the best all round sportsmen to come from the town.

Paul and his family would like to wish the Greenbacks the best of luck for the rest of the season.

The running costs for operating the U21’s is a lot more than most people would imagine with referee and linesman fees alone often coming in at around £120. So we have introduced player sponsorship. The cost of sponsoring a Player is £40 for the season and for that your name will be printed next to the player in every match day programme. Each time the player is mentioned on twitter the player sponsor will also be mentioned and we will also provide coverage on the club website. Bedcroc will visit each sponsor and have pictures taken which we will be added to the match day programme and thus provide even more coverage for the sponsor. Bedworth recorded what was in the end a comfortable win against a Lutterworth Town that worked very hard first half but Bedworth’s strength was all to be seen OO U TBALL CL after a strong second half rally. Bull had one save to make in the home goal in the first 20 minutes with Bedworth not being clinical in forward areas when dominating, the home side took the lead when a Harris free-kick evaded everyone in the box except Teeteh who tapped in from 3 yards. To give the u18 striker two goals in as many games The Bedworth goalscorer then flashing an angled shot just wide minutes later, a now more relaxed United began to impose themselves on their opponents with Coalville and Noon bringing saves from Rowley in the away team goal. Teeteh thought he had grabbed another goal when his goalbound shot was blocked by Mohamed virtually on the line, a penalty saw United go two-up just before halftime , a clumsy push in the box seeing Noon take the awarded spot-kick, his effort striking the post and rebounding in off an unlucky Rowley in Lutterworth’s goal. The 2-0 scoreline probably flattered the home side and after a much needed talking things soon picked up second half Will Harris was near to making it three for the home side, from a Bradshaw corner his header rapped the crossbar, then a very rare foray forward gave Town some hope, Mohamed broke clear and played a great ball to Dunkley who gave Bull no chance with a smart finish to make it 2-1. Straight from the kick-off Bedworth replied when Bruno Capela scoring with his first touch having coming on as sub, now two goals clear United added a late fourth when Noon finished with some aplomb. In the dying seconds Noon was oh so close to hammering United’s late dominance home when he saw the keeper off his line and from 35-yards his looping strike went just inches wide. (FT 4-1) Cook commented after the game that his team were now starting to gel very nicely and a strong run of results for October have seen them with striking position of the top teams in the league. He commented that a couple of lads that have impressed in the U18’s have stepped up and done extremely well the last couple of weeks in the u21’s and this can only be a good thing as we try to progress lads from with in and make them first team players of the future.

U10 Aztecs Sting Scorpians…

The Under 10 Aztecs made a cautious start away to Alvis Scorpions, but then after 10 minutes opened the scoring, and from then on it was apparent that they would dominate the fixture, and they would be able to add to the initial goal, and create good opportunities with every attack.

O O R O W B Y IN DU L U TBALL C They added a further goal before half time and were full of confidence going into the second half. The second half started the same way the first half ended and goals from Riley StubbsJeavons, Elijah Dallen, Keanan Campbell, Alex Mpofu gave the Aztecs a well deserved result. Alvis pulled one goal back in the second half, but a strong defensive display, and brave goalkeeping from Liam Connolly, limited the home sides opportunities.

U10 Victory at Brinklow…

We travelled to Brinklow unsure what to expect from a side we hadn’t faced for 2 years.

The boys started off on the front foot putting a nervous looking Brinklow defence under a lot of pressure with some superb pressing. When in possession, Hayden was controlling the midfield and finding Denis and Jack on the flanks well. This led to Iosib getting a lot of decent service to his feet which caused Brinklow huge problems, and only some poor finishing preventing the boys taking a deserved lead. When things did break down Rohan and Connor were well organised at the back and rarely looked troubled. The deadlock was finally broken when a scramble ensued in the area after another Bedworth corner. The ball eventually fell to Jack from Iosib’s ball across the face of goal and he happily snapped up the opportunity to give the team the lead they deserved. The second half was a more even affair with Rohan and Amar putting their bodies on the line to block shots on Jack’s goal on more than one occasion. When they were beaten, Jack came to the rescue with some confident goalkeeping. Another goal was needed and it finally came midway through the half when after persistent battling in midfield from Demba and Hayden, the ball found its way out to Iosib on the left he beat one man then another before cutting inside and driving past the keeper into the far corner for his 15th of the season. Further half chances fell to both sides without being taken before the whistle blew cueing celebrations from the green army. Overall a tough battling performance that yielded a hard earned win for the boys for only the second time this season. MOM Rohan Gill for an outstanding defensive display, but could have been any of the boys during a superb team performance.

Ladies Defeat Wolves…

Bedworth Ladies welcomed top of the table high flying Wolves Women to the Oval on Sunday which was always going to be our biggest challenge so far this season but one the ladies raised to from the off. With the game getting off to a fast start a lot of the ball was battled for in the middle of the park, however Wolves were the team who created the first chance of the game after some good work down the right wing found the centre forward in space 18 yards from goal, her strike was heading for the corner but a smart save from the Bedworth keeper saw the ball go out for the first corner of the game. Bedworth ladies cleared their lines well and soon were on the attack themselves after Lundie used her pace to ghost into space before a good challenge from the Wolves centre halve saw us have our first corner of the game. The first corner was delivered to the near post which was headed out for another corner, our second corner was delivered much deeper and was met by new Bedworth Centre half signing Alice Belcher who found the net from close range. Two more really good efforts followed for the Ladies but both were saved excellently by the Wolves keeper. Unfortunately on the stroke of half time a long ball pumped forward by Wolves was not cut out and in three passes saw Wolves draw level after their striker found the corner from close range. Second half Wolves had the better start and began to create chances mostly from long range but did hit the post off one of the corners they had which caused a massive scramble on the line but was finally cleared from a robust Bedworth defender. With 15 mins left, Wolves were getting more and more frustrated and pushing more players forward so the introduction of Farnsworth & Foskett and a change in shape turned the game in our favour and we were soon rewarded a penalty after Farnsworth was brought down in the box. Whalley stepped up to take the spot kick but unfortunately the keeper guessed the right way and made a smart save to her left. However this spurred the Greenbacks on even more and should have been awarded another penalty after Lundie was brought down by the Wolves keeper but the referee waved the appeal away. With the game entering the final minute of the game Bedworth forced another corner which was headed away from a defender but was met sweetly on the volley 18 yards from goal by Farnsworth who found the far corner of the goal causing the Bedworth players & fans to erupt and the big amount of Wolves fans into silence. Special mention to the small amount of travelling Wolves fans all the way from Sweden who were singing all through the game and had great fun in the club house with the Bedworth fans drinking Coffee and Vodka!!!

U14 Lions Take a break…

This Sunday saw the young Lions take on B League opponents Coventry Saracens in the first round of the league cup. Last season Saracens finished third in the league just behind us and were unlucky not gain promotion themselves, so this wasn’t going to be as easy as it looked on O O R O W B Y IN DU L U TBALL C paper.

With the chance to have a shuffle of the pack The Lions coaching team decided to change formation slightly to hopefully shore up the midfield a little bit more than we have done in the last few games, and to provide Kyle with a little bit more support up front but this meant we had to lose the wingers. The game started off very good for Bedworth with the ball being mostly in the Saracens half and the lads showing some great discipline to keep the new shape gradually the young Lions started to exert a bit of authority going forward, with the front 3 of Euan, Liam and Kyle linking well together. For all the nice intricate play that the Lions were doing the first goal of the game came from a long hopeful ball from Alex at centreback that the caused a bit of havoc in the Saracens back box the ball eventually falling to Kyle Rogers who finished with a right foot shot into the corner of the net. The game then swung slightly in the way of Saracens but the Bedworth back 4 of Luke, John, Alex and Josh L were equal to everything the improvement in the communication at the back was noticeable especially through the centre with Alex winning the majority of the first balls in the air and the times he didn’t our own John Terry was there to sweep up and put the tackle in. The Lions managed to double their lead before half time when after a neat little passing move involving Nash, Liam and Kyle ended up with Kyle running through into the area and when Kyle gets one on one with a keeper there is only ever one winner. Half time 2-0 A change of personnel in the second half saw Josh B come on at right back Harvey and Will coming on into the front 3 and middle 3 respectively. The game then turned in a mad 5 minutes an attempted clearance which was sliced went back to Harrison in goal who picked it up the referee deemed it as a back pass so a free kick was given about 8 yards out which Saracens with the help of a deflection put past the helpless Harrison to make it 2- 1. Saracens then were gifted another goal when a sloppy pass back to Harrison didn’t make it and the nippy left winger pounced on the mistake to round Harrison and put the ball into the empty net to even the scores.

The Lions then decided to wake up again and this time Kyle became provider he picked the ball up beat his man and slipped an inch perfect ball to Liam who was unmarked centre of the goal with the whole goal to aim at he picked his spot and slid the ball elegantly passed the advancing keeper. The Lions then kept up the pressure and that man yet again Kyle popped up to make it 4-2 after some great midfield play from Nash winning the ball high up the park and slipping an inch perfect ball into Kyle to finish with that deadly right foot again. There was still time for the Saracens to make the last few minutes a bit hairy after their Right winger again popped up in the box beat his man and buried the ball in at the near post to make it 4-3. With less than a minute left Saracens got a free kick on the edge of the area in a dangerous position everyone was holding their breath but fortunately for the Lions the wall stood firm and the final whistle was blown. Man of the match was a close run thing between Alex, Liam and Kyle with Alex getting credit for his management of the back 4 especially in the first half and taking charge of the first ball, Something we have been asking for all season so hopefully this is the game that starts the trend off. Liam was in with a shout for his awareness and passing play today I don’t think he lost the ball once. But we had to go with Kyle in the end for yet again another hat-trick and his tireless running off the ball and the awareness to slip Liam in for his goal showed talent beyond his years. For us it was nice to go through in the cup especially as we tried a new system the 3 goals we conceded were yet again through individual mistakes if we can cut them out that elusive clean sheet will come. On a positive it was good to see the first half performance and the way that the boys kept their shape and defensively solid. Just want to say todays game was a great advert for youth football in Coventry with 2 teams playing football rather than trying to bully each other. Final note, The Lions players and coaches would like to wish the Saracens players coaches and parents all the best for this season and hopefully we will see them in the A league next season as they are always welcome visitors to The Oval.

‘Thank you for saving my life’ Paul Feeney thanks Bedworth United walking footballers A Coventry grandad says he will be forever indebted to Bedworth United Football Club for literally saving his life. Had it not been for the quick actions of members of the club and its walking football team Paul Feeney says he would not be around to share his remarkable story.

The Eastern Green resident, who collapsed on the pitch at The Oval while playing a walking football game, simply said: “I cannot put into words how thankful I am, I am indebted to all of the people at Bedworth.

The Birmingham Walking Football team player collapsed during a fund-raising match in aid of Prostate Cancer at the home of the ‘Greenbacks on Friday, September 21. Two members of the Bedworth walking football team as well stadium manager, Stuart Roe put their life-saving skills into practice and used the club’s defibrillator to literally bring Mr Feeney back to life. “I don’t really remember a lot, I remember turning into Bedworth United, I was really, really looking forward to taking part in the game for prostate cancer, but it was almost as if I had been switched off,” the 61-year-old explained. Unbeknown to him, the first aid and defibrillator trained ‘Greenbacks members fought to save his life while West Midlands Ambulance Service paramedics were en-route. The former manager at the Coventry Chamber of Commerce was then taken to the University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW), where he underwent a triple heart bypass.

After spending more than ten days at UHCW, Mr Feeney was able to return home to his grateful family, including his wife Dawn. Keen to thank those who saved his life, Mr and Mrs Feeney returned to the Oval and it proved to be an emotional day. “I am really indebted to club, without the skills of some of the people there, I would not be where I am today,” he said. “It is not just the people who saved my life, it is whoever took the decision at the club to get a defibrillator, they also saved my life with that decision. “It was strange to go there ( Bedworth United) I don’t know anyone there but they all knew me.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who helped me.” “Until I spoke to them, I didn’t realise how traumatic it was for them and Paul Feeney (pictured right) how touch and go it was for me. “It just goes to show how important thanks Stuart Roe defibrillators are and how much of a different they can make, I know they are expensive, especially for small teams but you can’t put a cost on a life.”

By his own admission, Mr Feeney was fit, having played Saturday and Sunday football league all of his life, twice a week and then been playing walking football for Birmingham for the past two years. “It just goes to show that it can happen to anyone,” he added. The famed family spirit among the walking football community has astounded the grandad: “I had well wishes from as far as New Zealand and Australia, I couldn’t believe it. “I am so surprised with how many people have been in touch, especially other walking football clubs, they have been brilliant.

Russ Watkin, one of the directors at Bedworth United Football Club and a member of the walking football team, said they were delighted to welcome Mr and Mrs Feeney along to their first county FA game on Sunday. “We had kept in touch with them, they kept us updated when he was coming out of hospital and so we gave Paul and his wife an open invite to come back whenever they could,” he said. “It was great to see them both, it was nice for our walking football team players and Stuart Roe, who saved his life, to see him again.” Mr Watkin said the football club has also been inundated with messages following the life-saving, on-pitch drama. “It was quite remarkable the response we got back from it, the amount of lower league clubs who explained how they had just got a defibrillator and how the story showed how important they are,” he said. “Walking football is like a huge family, we have had so many messages and so many people saying how they too have a defibrillator.

“I just think it is such a shame that they cost so much money and very little is given to grass roots football for things like this. Russ’ wife puts on a legendary buffet after games: “We always run a little black out to pay for the buffet so that it doesn’t have to come out of club funds and Dawn had a go and won it.” She said: “This must be my lucky club, first you save my husband’s life and then I win the black out.”

a supporter’s eye view

We did it at last, one third of the way through & in our 15th competitive game of the season we finally recorded our first win of the campaign. Ok, it was in a cup game against a team from a lower league but a win’s a win & it was more than welcome. It came a week ago last Tuesday in a Birmingham Senior Cup game at Boldmere St Michaels. We won 4-1, although when we went in 1-0 down at half time we thought “here we go again”. There was a great feeling of relief after the final whistle amongst the few Greenbacks supporters who were there, & it put us in a good mood for the trip to Carlton Town for the FA Trophy game the following Saturday. Alas, once again we tasted defeat, this time by the only goal scored in the game, because try as we might we couldn’t find the back of the net, sums up the way things have been going for us at the moment.

Last Saturday it was back to League action when we set off to Barwell to play Jimmy Ginnelly’s Canaries, a team who we’d played here earlier this season in the League Cup, & after playing out a scoreless draw before we lost on penalties we wondered if our luck would change this time around? It turned out to be a game which we could have won because we missed several absolute “sitters” which on any other day would have gone in the net. As it was after 90 minutes of normal time we were losing 1-0 & down to ten men when we were awarded a penalty. Luke Rowe held his nerve to give us a 1-1 draw when it looked once again as if we were going home empty handed. Unfortunately we’re still rooted to the foot of the table but our tales of woe can’t last forever, can they?

This afternoon we welcome Redditch United here to “The Oval” for the first time since the 2015-16 season when we were both in the Southern League Premier.

That season Redditch finished as runners up but unfortunately lost out in the play-offs, whereas we finished fourth from the bottom & were relegated. We lost 2-1 when they came here but they really put us to the sword when we went to “The Valley” later in the season, because although we managed to score a consolation goal they put eight past us, which as far

as I can determine was our heaviest League defeat as Bedworth United.

We’ve met Redditch many times over the years, & I can remember in the days before sat-navs getting lost on the way home, even ending up going on a grand tour of a Redditch industrial estate on the way.

It was at their ground that I first tried to video a game & decided that I didn’t have the temperament for it, because when we scored my celebrations resulted in the most wobbly pictures that one could ever see, happy days. I’ve helped out many times with video since, but It’s something I don’t enjoy when it’s my team playing, because I can’t help getting emotionally involved & so don’t concentrate on the job in hand.

I understand that since we were last there Redditch have installed a 3G pitch so our “Plastic” pitch should hold no fears for them. I know lots of fans don’t like 3G but it must be the way forward because in the “Old Days” it was not unusual to go somewhere & play on a boggy surface with poor floodlights, something that just wouldn’t be allowed to happen nowadays, although playing in a swamp with dim lighting could be very entertaining.

Like us Redditch aren’t doing as well as they would have wished at the moment, finding themselves near the bottom of the table, although unlike us they’ve managed to register four wins so far, the latest being last Saturday when they beat Banbury United 2-0 at “The Valley”. They must really fancy taking all the points today, but the way we played against Barwell gives us a glimmer of hope that our fortunes might be about to change.

Normally when we haven’t done very well the journey home is a very sombre affair, but I’m pleased to report that we were much more upbeat after last Saturday & although we only managed to draw, it gives us a lot more optimism that we’ll soon register our first league win of the season. Could it be today?

Who knows, but we’re a lot more optimistic now that we’ll turn things around, than we were a few weeks ago.
