Words From the Dugout Games can be won or lost in a split second by managers’ coaches and officials Good afternoon to you all for this FA cup tie this today. I would especially like to welcome to the Oval, the supporters’ players, staff and board members of Kidsgrove FC, our visitors today. As a player I was privileged to make the quarter finals of the FA cup in the mid 90s with Bolton Wanderers, eventually going out 3-2 to a trade mark winning volleyed goal by Southampton’s Matt Le Tissier at the Dell. This cup run brought acknowledgement and raised the profile of the football club, which the town and fans thoroughly enjoyed. The FA cup has the ability to bring excitement to a football club as anything can happen on the day and in the cup draw. Games can be won or lost in a split second by managers’ coaches and officials but much more likely by the players, nobody knows what fate has in store. The main aim is to progress to the next round and welcome any extra luck that is blessed to you on the day. It is also a good financially to try and have a good cup run for any club as the prize monies escalate the further you progress. The two league games we have encountered so far have been very tough. A good, deserved win at home against a strongly fancied Corby team was very pleasing, an effective performance with the correct result. Tuesdays’ night game away at Carlton was a hard result to swallow with us losing 1 – 0. The game looked certain to be a goal less draw and it was just a typical early season battle on a poor pitch which was not conducive to playing decent football. There were very few chances created by both teams and they sneaked a goal which in my opinion gave them the 3 undeserved points. The players showed some real fighting spirit which was a positive, but the result did not match all their efforts and a draw would have been a fair result. Your encouraging support makes a lot of difference to the players’ performances and our clubs results. So please keep up the good positive support today. Enjoy the cup tie. Stuart

Last Time Out CORBY TOWN

Bedworth United 2 Corby Town 0 The Greenbacks faced off against one of the favourites to do well in the league. It was Corby who looked the more dangerous in the first 10 minutes firing 2 shots from distance narrowly off target but when Luke Rowe was brought down in the area after some neat play on the edge of the box and Mitch Piggon put the penalty away Bedworth took charge for the remainder of the half and were unlucky not to extend their lead. The second half started with as expected Corby on the front foot but they could not create any real goalscoring opportunities with Jamal Clarke and Kyle Barnett protecting Sam Lomax in the Bedworth goal. Bedworths pressing game paid off when Elliott Parrott stole the ball 35 yards out advanced towards the Corby goal and fired the ball past the Corby keeper to double Bedworth’s lead and seal the game. 14

Last Time Out CARLTON Carlton 1 Bedworth United 0 Bedworth travelled to Carlton on Tuesday night looking to build on their success from Saturday. Carlton started on the front foot when Niall Davie took a free kick on the edge of the area right footed which hit the cross bar and bounced just the right side of the line for Bedworth and Sam Lomax then palmed the ball clear. The game from there on very much became a war of attrition with neither side showing any real quality and the ball seeming to spend more time in the air than on the grass. This could have been because of the poor state of the pitch which had everyone wondering how it would look come mid November when the rain comes. The Second half started in much the same way as the first finished with both teams giving away little niggly fouls and neither team still being able to string any major passages of play together. It was Carlton though that scored the decisive goal. A ball into the box was met by Aaron Opoku who prodded the ball home from close range. To rub salt into the wounds on another day Opoku would have seen red for an over the top challenge on Luke Rowe just after half time. Carlton did go down to ten men with 5 minutes left when an injury forced Dan Fletcher off and Carlton having used all their subs had to play out the last of the game a man down. The Greenbacks did try to fight their way back into the game with Elliot Parrot coming close after some good work out wide by Ishmael Dawson but the Bedworth man could only head the ball over.

Around the Ground Its been a busy few weeks at The OVAL on and off the pitch with the Summer Holiday Camp which saw in access of 150 4-11year olds enjoying the opportunity to be coached by the Academy students and a fun 2 weeks was enjoyed by all coaches and young players alike. The Football Academy have started back for their Pre Season with this year 70—75 students attending. The students will be studying a Level 3 course in Sports Coaching and Development. The past Education year, that concluded in July, saw the majority of students successful in their Studies as well as improving their Footballing skills. If you know anyone who is aged 16 to 18 and would like to hear more about the opportunities that the Bedworth United Academy can lead to then please ask a member of staff who will take your details and get one of the Academy tutors to contact you. All of the junior teams have started to ramp up their training for the start of their season in September, with upwards of 20 teams entering into 3 different leagues. We are currently looking for people who want to become coaches for Junior Teams and the Club is willing to fund your first steps into coaching by paying for your FA Level 1 coaching badge and CRC. If you think this is something that you could be interested in then please contact a member of the club who will guide you in the right direction. Speaking from experience and having coached Juniors for a number of years it is an extremely rewarding thing to get involved with. We have also started to ramp up in the Social Club with bookings for parties etc and are taking bookings all the time. If you are looking for somewhere to hold your next function or party then please again contact a member of staff. Please note that we are open most evenings and over the weekend for live games shown on Sky Sports and I am sure you will agree that the Clubhouse is now a much more welcoming place inviting to come for a drink and watch some football. If it is raining today you may have noticed the entrance to the Turnstiles is not underwater. The Council finally cleared the drain responsible for the flooding so wellies are no longer required! As you are now all aware the new tea bar is still under construction along with the strength and conditioning Gym so if you want some hot food or a tea or coffee then it is currently available in the clubhouse from the serving hatch with a reduced menu. Please bear with us whilst this work is ongoing as it is only a temporary measure. Hope you enjoy todays game #upthegreenbacks

Bedworth United U21 The Greenbacks u21 continued their unbeaten run in pre season with a less than impressive 3-3 away draw with Lichfield City u21. Bedworth started the game slowly and couldn’t get to grips with the pace of the game, lucky not to concede twice in the first 10 minutes, new signing Jack Taft making important saves. The Greenbacks took the lead in the 34th minute Cameron Dunn scoring off a twice taken penalty after a Bedworth player had encroached. The lead only lasted 3 minutes when Lichfield scored from a set piece after a foul in a dangerous area. HT 1-1 The second half started badly for Bedworth when a mistake from a throw in allowed the opposition to score unopposed. Bedworth equalised 5 minutes later when Dunn finished off a class move which involved 5 players, Firing the ball past the keeper into the far corner of the net. The Greenbacks then took control of the game eventually taking the lead from debutant Jack Barnett, heading in a cross from Bent. Lichfield grabbed a late equaliser when substitute keeper Pat Kollie came to punch, colliding with his opponent the ball dropped and was tucked away amidst protests from the Bedworth players. FT 1-1 Manager Kev Burke said after the game....”although I’m not pleased with conceding late on, overall a draw was probably the fair result”. We have a great young squad who are working hard in training and adapting to a new system, I’m sure we will have a good go at it this season and if we can avoid the injuries that have plagued us pre season we will be ok. Youth Teams The Under 18 Midland floodlit team kicked off their season this week with a home game against Coventry Copeswood. With the league starting early and players on holiday or missing Lee Hurst had to shuffle his pack from the team he would have ideally put out but this did not stop them putting a marker down for the season with an emphatic 7-1 win. Goals from Cameron Dunn x2 and Liam Murphy put Bedworth 3-0 up at half time with Cam Dunn rounding off his hattrick Lewis Allton, Marshall Zealand and Chris Jones adding 4 more after the break. Copeswood got a consolation from the spot to leave the final score at 7-1.

Lee Hurst said after the game “It was good to get a good start for the season and I believe this squad can only get better and improve going forward, what is good to hear is that the development squad is coming along well this will only put pressure on my current squad as they all know that should they slacken off there is the possibility of someone from the development team taking the step up and taking their place. To win by such a large margin against a Copeswood team with some of the more senior players missing just goes to show the strength in depth that we have at U18 level across the club”.

The Youth Development Team have been busy in preparation for their season which is starting in September with friendlies against Coventrians U21s, Kenilworth U18s and a game against Woodlands. The Coventrians game was a hard fought affair with Bedworth taking the lead through Nathan Malanga then being pegged back and then going a goal down just before halftime with Alex Murphy in the Bedworth goal saving a penalty. The second half was goalless but it was a great run out for the lads against a team who will be in the same league as our own U21s this season. Result: Bedworth United Development v Coventrians U21s 1-2 Next up was Kenilworth U18s again Bedworth took the lead through Elliot Harris and went in 1 –0 to the good at halftime. A mix up at the back gifted Kenilworth an equaliser but Bedworth went back on the front foot and from a great cross by Luke Stewart Elliot Harris bundled the ball home to give the young Greenbacks the win. Result: Bedworth United Development v Kenilworth U18s 2-1 Finally a game against local mens team Woodlands at Nicholas Chamberlain School. With a much changed side due to injury and other commitments. The Bedworth lads took the lead from a Luke Stewart corner which was met by the head of Brad Gibson-Hall Woodlands equalised from their own corner. With 10 minutes of the half to go Ben Walker struck a shot from the edge of the box which deflected over the stranded Woodies goalkeeper to send the Greenbacks in 2-1 at half time. The second half saw Bedworth lay siege to the Woodlands goal but a mix of poor finishing and good goalkeeping kept the scoreline respectable for the senior side. Result: Bedworth United Development v Woodlands Mens 2-1

Ladies Report by Hannah Cullinan Bedworth United Ladies were hoping to begin the season with a win against Boldmere St Michaels Women. They got off to a dream start however after a couple of scares from Boldmere, when Kirsty Farnsworth sloted home after a defence splitting off the ball run, and the finish to match. Unfortunately, the lead only lasted a quarter of an hour when Boldmeres powerful number 9, rounded the keeper and slotted home. Just sixteen minutes later, Boldmere took the lead with a finish from just inside the box. Half time Bedworth United Ladies 1 Boldmere St Michaels Ladies 2 The second half was more of the same, with Boldmere having the better of the chances, and scoring straight after the restart. A little after the hour mark, Boldmere’s number 9 got another goal, and a hattrick for her on the opening day of the season. Boldmere continued their dominance with their number 9 grabbing a fourth for herself, and a fifth for them. The Mikes went on to score another three with the last of them being a beautifully caught shot into the bottom corner, leaving no chance for the keeper. Full-time Bedworth United Ladies 1 Boldmere St Michaels Ladies 8 The Greenback’s are in league action again this Sunday, playing Peterborough at The Oval with kick off at 2pm. #UpTheBeddy

Todays Visitors A History Kidsgrove Athletic Club History Athletic were formed in December 1952 after a meeting in the Blue Bell public house ten minutes walk from the present ground. It was formed as a breakaway club from Kidsgrove United when it was thought the club were bringing in too many ’outsiders’ from the potteries instead of local players. The main instigator, Ernie Langford, endured a sixty year tenure with the club as chairman then president and served many years on the Staffs FA until his passing a few years ago. The main stand is named after him. Eric Hibbitt and Frank Timmis, who both attended that first meeting, still support the club today. The club started life in the now defunct Burslem and Tunstall League playing on the Vickers and Goodwin pitch on the A50 just down the road. In 1961 the present ground was acquired from a local farmer and the club took a year out to develop the pitch. After success in cup and league in the Burslem and Tunstall league the club joined the Staffordshire County league in 1963 where again they had success winning the league and Staffs Challenge cup. In search of more success the club joined the Mid Cheshire league, a move not entirely liked by the Staffs FA but eventually they did allow a Kidsgrove reserve side back into the County league. The Seventies and Eighties saw the club have huge successes winning the Mid Cheshire league four times and the challenge cup three times, and they also lifted the Staffs FA Vase and the challenge cup once more. They also lifted the prestigious Sentinel Cup three times. The Eighties saw the club grow more and more and the clubhouse and ground started developing further and further with the aid of a strong committee, supporters, and local tradesmen. In 1986 the club applied for membership of the North West Counties league but this was rejected twice until facilities were improved. The club were accepted in 1989, the same year they became the first team to win the Staffs FA Vase twice. Three years later Kidsgrove were promoted to the first division after finishing tenth in the second division, the result of the league introducing strict ground criteria. Part of this was the installation of floodlights, (acquired free off the council from run down tennis courts at Chinky Park) and on the 29th October 1991 Lou Macari brought his Stoke City team to officially switch on the floodlights.

26

Todays Visitors A History Within the next ten years the south and west stands were completed but the club struggled financially on and off the field but after the demise of Eastwood Hanley in 1997 the playing side were strengthened when their manager Jimmy Wallace took over. The team of 97-98 had unparalleled success winning the league and challenge cup and narrowly missing out in an FA Vase final at Wembley losing 3-2 to Tiverton in the semi-final in front of Kidsgrove’s record crowd of 1903.

Promotion to the NPL was not forthcoming because of facilities but in 2002 after winning the league promotion was gained. The team struggled on and off the field and two years later they faced relegation for the first time in their history after finishing bottom of the league. The restructuring of the league however saved this from happening and to celebrate the club won the Staffs Senior cup for the first time beating Stafford Rangers 1-0 at the Britannia Stadium, a feat they have won four times since. The club have only picked up one piece of silverware in the league winning the Chairmans Cup 7-6 on aggregate against Woodley Sports and reached the play-offs once, losing 1-0 to Glapwell in 2010. Struggles have ensued and re-election twice saved relegation and despite reaching the FA Trophy quarter finals losing 2-0 to Ilkeston, and the FA Cup 4th qualifying round losing 2-0 to Bradford PA, Kidsgrove have had to settle for fair play awards. The club reached the FA Cup 4th qualifier again in 2018 and faced the long journey to Conference side Hartlepool United and were unlucky in losing 1-0. Last season the club did well on the pitch at first before going out in the third qualifier of the FA Cup 1-0 to Gateshead. The Grove slipped slightly in the league though were still in with a chance of the play-offs before the season was halted. The club parted company with manager Ryan Austin in April and former player Scott Dundas was appointed as the new manager. With plans approved for new floodlights, clubhouse, and other facilities, the club and supporters remain very optimistic about the future on and off the field.

From The Board Sincere thanks from us all for the excellent support on Saturday v Corby which I am sure contributed to a brilliant team performance. Whilst a 2-0 win was a great way to start the Season I think I can speak for us all that it could have been more but perhaps I am being greedy. Writing these notes before our Match away at Carlton which I know will be difficult as we always seem to struggle there but I am sure Stu, Penno and Lents will have the lads well prepared. A good run in the FA Cup is long overdue with some recent disappointments but we are at Home and with your continued positive support as shown last Saturday I am confident we can progress. It is also an important additional income stream so it would be great to get the job done at the first time of asking without the need of a replay. The other major positive of our win over Corby was the gaffer organised a video message to Neill with the players singing Sweet Caroline. I spoke to him shortly afterwards and he was well chuffed. By the time Saturday comes around we should have a new PA system so hopefully you will all know whose playing and who wins the 50/50. I know the players will welcome hearing music during their warm up as Andy Penny complained on their behalf and no one ignores him!! Up the Greenbacks

Last week local MP Craig Tracey 'visited The OVAL to view the progress we have made over recent Seasons both on and off the Pitch. Since then we have also met a local Councillor as we feel it is imperative to keep the Council updated on Club development and on side
