Words From the Dugout Extremely competitive league with mainly strong well established clubs. I would like to extend a warm welcome back to the BUFC fans after such a long period without competitive football. It has been a strange 18 months and hopefully we all can settle down and learn to live and suppress the covid virus as a new season begins. I would also like to welcome all connected with Corby Town Football Club for this afternoon’s match at the Oval. We have added some new faces to the team as well as some familiar ones too over the past few months. I would like to thank Andy Penny and Jamie Lenton in all their efforts in helping me with assembling the new squad. The group of players is ever developing, and it is is my job to keep improving the squads by constantly watching games, talking to contacts and looking to bring better players to the Oval improving the quality. We have been bouncing from north to south leagues on a regular basis as seasons pass and this has been very frustrating, especially when recruiting players. With the restructuring of the new Midland North League this yoyo issue will hopefully stop now. The new league reduces travelling and seems an extremely competitive league with mainly strong. well established clubs battling out the seasons campaign. The club seems to be in quite a stable position after the prolonged break. This is mainly down to the diligence of the chairman. As many of you are aware Neill underwent a quadruple heart bypass operation 2 weeks ago. We all wish him a steady and speedy recovery from this huge procedure. Things seem to be returning to a bit more normality at the football club now as the popular fully funded Football Education Programme is up and running again and we start enrolling this week, All information and applications can be found on our website. A final big thank you, to ALL the people that work at the Oval to prepare and make it run as smoothly as it does. It starts at board level where many issues and decisions must be dealt with and actioned upon. Plus, a huge THANK YOU to all the volunteers as all your efforts which are priceless to the football club. I guess many of you do not realise how big an organisation we are. We have so many teams, players, coaches, supporter’s activities events and footfall that comes through our gates. It takes a lot of organisation and effort to keep this non-profit making community football club at Bedworth running. Stay positive & enjoy the game. Stuart

Around the Ground MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD In the absence of Neill, who is progressing well after his operation, I thought the first Match of the Season would be an ideal opportunity to update everyone as to all the progress that has been undertaken during the last Lockdown and close Season. A major step forward, which will not be obvious to many, is that all Club Sections (Ladies, U21's, Youth, Juniors) have come under the main Club 'umbrella' from a financial perspective ensuring we are more collective and transparent in this area in cementing the One Club philosophy which we are striving for. Our 1st Team Manager, Stu Storer, has been made Club Director of Football and Andy Stickley, Football Secretary, is now a member of the Executive Board. The Non Executive Board has been joined by Tina Richards representing the Ladies Section and Jamie Lenton as Academy Director I assume everyone has already seen the upgraded Social Club which can now be hired for all you party / celebration events with us having access to an excellent disco. The 'old' Dressing Rooms have been re-roofed and will be refurbished with the previous Tea Bar being converted to a Strength and Conditioning area for use of all Bedworth Teams and Academy. The new Tea Bar is still in the process of construction being unfortunately delayed by Neill's hospitalisation. Limited hot food will be available from the downstairs kitchen in the Social Club pending completion. Apologies for any inconvenience. The Academy goes from strength to strength aiming for 65 Students in the next Educational Year bringing in much needed income into the Club. I cannot talk about income without mentioning our Stadium Manager, Stu Roe, who during lockdown did a tremendous job applying for Grants that supported us in the extra expenditure incurred by Covid and construction work. Our Staff and volunteers have undertaken many jobs to maintain and improve The OVAL which I am very grateful for. The move to the Northern League will be a challenging one with the perception that North is stronger than South to which I agree. However, although we have lost 3 Friendlies to Covid and last Saturday to a water logged pitch, which has disrupted Pre - Season Stu and his Management Team have been working hard preparing the Players and incorporate our new signings. I am proud of our status as the Number 1 Community Club in the area and everyone will always be made welcome to The OVAL. Thanking everyone for your continued support and lets look forward to a good uninterrupted Season for the Green Army Alan Ison Vice Chairman

Bedworth United U21 This season I have selected a younger squad than previous seasons with more focus on local talent rather than players that have attended Coventry University and from further afield. With the average age of the squad under 19 it is a season that will be difficult but one we are really looking forward to. Even though we have selected a younger squad we still believe it to be a strong one and one that will compete at the top of the league. Having a strong u21 squad hopefully keeps the 1st team players’ attitudes and performances at the highest level, which is only good for “The Gaffer”(Stuart Storer) and his ambitions for the club now and in the future I have brought in a new assistant and coach this season, Robbie Brannan steps up from the u16 MJPL side and Luke Hennerley from local side Poppies. Pre-season has been an excellent opportunity to asses the players fitness and ability against quality opposition, a narrow 4-3 defeat v an established Redditch United u21 side and 3-0 victory v Chasetown, pre-season culminated in a final game away at Lichfield City today. Youth Teams This season not only do we have the U18s Midland floodlit youth team we have also formed a Youth Development team who will also be playing midweek but in the Midland Junior Premier League midweek youth development league. Lee Hurst who led the young Greenbacks last year will be carrying on with the Midland floodlit League side assisted by Aaron Eales and Craig Jee whilst the Development team will be led by Stu Roe assisted by Kev Turvey. The formation of the Development team ensures that we as a club can hold onto our players finishing junior football whilst still ensuring that they get competitive game time. Both teams will be playing on Wednesday nights so for you this ensures that you get the opportunity to watch a match every Wednesday night. The Midland Floodlit Team will be looking to build on their successes last year before Covid Struck the team were sitting top of the Eastern Division and were unlucky to not progress into the semi finals of the Cup competition held after lockdown ended being narrowly beaten by the eventual winners.. The Development side will be going into the unknown as we have not entered this MJPL midweek league before but with teams like Atherstone, Rushden and Diamonds and Solihull Moors in the league it looks like it could be a challenge. Both Youth teams wish the first team all the best in the coming season. We would love for you to come and support both youth teams when they play at home and maybe you will spot the stars of the future.

Ladies Our ladies section of the club has been moving at a quick pace over the close season and they are more than ready to take to the pitch in The FA Women’s National League again for the 2021/22 campaign. As has been the case for three consecutive seasons, the first team take their place in Division One Midlands and the development team take their place in the Reserve Midland Division. After two stop-start and curtailed seasons, the ladies are hoping for a continuous season ahead and with the changes made both on and off the pitch, they are in the best position to have a successful campaign. The ladies have partnered with local children’s charity Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice to support those at the Coventry location and make a difference to the local community by taking part and running charity events. There are also partnerships in place with Coventry University to support the squad with sports therapy, nutrition, psychology, media and players from the university women’s football team, so there has been a tremendous effort to create a valuable set up for the future. The management team has seen some changes with Scott Perkins leaving the club and the addition of Billy Osborne as development team manager. Paddy Richards will continue to take charge of the first team, with player/coach Hiedi Sloan returning to training after a lengthy injury spell on the sidelines. Annie Zaidi will become development team coach for the 2021/22 season and Shaun Taylor will continue in his role as goalkeeping coach.

The ladies would like to wish the men’s first team the best of luck for their upcoming campaign.

Todays Visitors A History Corby Town Football Club were formed in 1948 and are the second club to represent the town, following Stewarts & Lloyds Corby, who were formed 13 years earlier in 1935. The club’s nickname ‘The Steelmen’ derives from the old steelworks that were in Corby. The first chairman of the club was local MP William Montgomery, whilst Reg Smith was named the first manager. Smith had previously played for Millwall and Dundee whilst representing England at international level. Things started well for the newly formed Steelmen, winning their first game 5-1 against Wellingborough Town on 21 August 1948 at Occupation Road, which was home to Corby Town until the move to the Rockingham Triangle in 1985. It took the club only three years to win their first title, wrapping up the United Counties League in 1951 before doing the same again only a year later, with Ernie Middlemiss scoring a club record 135 goals in 136 games, a record that was to stand for 40 years. 1958 saw the introduction of floodlit football in Corby and in the same year the club moved from the Midland League to the Southern League. The move to the Southern League looked to be a good one as the club narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier Division in 1964, but promotion was gained the following year. The club made several unsuccessful applications to join the Football League, although they did receive one vote in 1966. The club moved to the multi-purpose Rockingham Triangle venue in 1985 but it didn’t prove to be a lucky move as the Steelmen were once again relegated from the Premier Division in 1990. They didn’t spend long out of the Premier as they achieved a league and cup double the following season. The mid-90s saw a cash crisis at the club which threatened to put the club out of business, and although they were spared, relegation was to follow. The turn of the millennium brought about more positivity at the Triangle as they consolidated their mid-table position in the Dr Martens league. More was to follow in 2005 as they just missed out on a play-off place under manager Rob Dunion. Dunion’s side went one better in 2006 as they were promoted once more. Corby Town saw a change of ownership in 2007 as a new board made up of ex-Kettering Town chairman Peter Mallinger, David Dunham and Mick Leech and in 2009, under Graham Drury, the Steelmen won the Southern League title. The Steelmen narrowly missed out on a play-off spot during their first season in the Conference North. Club chairman Peter Mallinger sadly passed away in January 2011, just months before the club’s new 3,000 capacity Steel Park stadium was due to open. His son David Mallinger took charge of the club and a positive start to life in their new home led the Steelmen into play-off contention and the first round proper of the FA Cup, where they were beaten by Bristol Rovers at the half-way stage. Sadly off-field issues had an affect on results and Corby only managed to avoid relegation on the final day of the 2011/12 season, with Graham Drury leaving the club at the end of the campaign. In the summer of 2012, a Leicestershire businessman took control of the club, with Ian Sampson being installed as manager. However after a tough start to the season Sampson departed and was replaced by his assistant manager Chris Plummer

26

Todays Visitors A History The former Peterborough Northern Star manager could not repeat the survival act of the previous year however, with Corby Town being relegated from the Blue Square North at the end of the season. CORBY TOWN FC - HISTORY Plummer remained in charge of the side, however resigned just two games into the 2013/14 season after heavy defeats against Burnham and Hemel Hempstead Town. The Chairman moved to appoint the managerial duo of Tommy Wright and Andrew Wilson, who helped to guide the club up the Southern League Premier Division table, however once again financial issues at the club prevented any real challenge to reach the play-offs. In April 2014 it was announced that a local consortium of seven businessmen headed by Paul Glass had agreed a deal to purchase the club and save it from the threat of administration. Stevie Noble was appointed as the chairman and Tommy Wright was given sole charge of the first team, with Andrew Wilson departing. In his first year in charge of the side Tommy Wright led his team to the Southern League Premier Division Championship. The Steelmen secured the title and promotion back to the Conference North with a dramatic 3-2 win on the final day of the season against Poole Town who had led the division by one point going into that fixture. Spencer Weir-Daley scored the winning goal for Corby with just nine minutes remaining. However Corby suffered relegation after just one season in the National North. After a period of uncertainty as to which league Corby would be placed in by the F.A., we now make our first ever start in the Northern Premier League for season 2016/2017. Tommy Wright was relieved of his position in early October 2016 after a poor start,he was replaced by Gary Mills ex Kings Lynn, and Wrexham Assistant manager in mid October 2016 as Corby look to kick start season 2016/2017. However Mills was relieved of his position after just 6 months, the job being placed in Steven Kinniburgh’s hands for the rest of this season 2016/2017 ( Caretaker) In early May 2017 David Bell was appointed Manager along with Rob Gould as his Assistant as Corby hope they can succeed in getting the club back into the 4th tier after 2 relegations in succession tumbling from the National North thro the Northern Premier Leagues in successive seasons. After a poor start to the 2017/2018 season the club parted company with them in late September 2017. Director of Football Steven Kinniburgh taking charge in a capacity of interim manager. Steven was made permanent manager in Late March 2018.He appointed Ashley Robinson as his assistant in June 2018.Kinniburgh resigned his position in July 2019. Corby appointed senior players Gary Mulligan and Ash Robinson interim managers with Elliot Sandy as assistant to them.Mark Peters was installed as Temporary Manager in Feb 2020.In May 2020 Tommy Wright returned as Manager he led Corby to the Conference North ( now National ) in his first spell. However Tommy resigned weeks before the start of the season due to Family Concerns. Corby then appointed Gary Mills as Manager, Gary found fame with Leicester in the Premier Div before managing York City back to the Football League and winning the F.A. trophy in the same season. Gary has appointed Darron Gee as his Assistant. Corby found themselves moved back to the NPL by the F.A. in May 2021 joining the new Div 1 Midlands.
