Bedworth United v NEEDHAM MARKET

THE MANAGERS’ OFFICE

STUART STORER I would like to welcome all connected with Kings Lynn Football Club for this afternoons match. I hope you enjoy the match, facilities & have a safe trip back to the East coast It was yet another frustrating weekend away for us at Rushall last week. I thought we dominated large parts of the game creating several clear-cut chances but failing to convert them. The players, as usual gave their all and their application of the tactics nearly gained us the win which we really deserved. The Rushall keeper pulled off two great saves and was well worth the man of the match award he received. Our away performance against todays visitors was a great point for us in a 1-1 draw, yet we had to survive a 20-minute onslaught at the start of the game before we tactically changed and then we looked more solid. Since then they have picked up some good results putting them in the thick of the playoffs and looking favourites to stay there. As the season continues I would like to thank my staff members Andy Penny and Jamie Lenton for remaining very positive and continually working hard, endeavouring to progress things on and off the field. It is very important that a manager has good people around him that he can trust, have integrity and share honest thoughts without recrimination. These are top guys and BUFC are very lucky to have such loyal servants. As the improvements to the new toilets are not too far off from being finished, the next phase of the clubs’ progression is a full refurbishment of the club house itself. As a social club the past 5 years have seen a huge turn around from the bar haemorrhaging money drastically, to be a successful entity, thus allowing us to upgrade it for all of our usage. Great credit must go to the present board for its business acumen and even more credit to all the volunteers and bar staff that have worked so hard to make it a success. Obviously, this is yet another tough match is in store for us today. So please keep up your positive support for the Greenbacks and enjoy the 90+ minutes

Enjoy the game.

Welcome

KINGS LYNN TOWN FC History

It is not really known when King’s Lynn first had a football club that represented the town, just that Lynn Town was reformed in 1879 having gone out of existence “a few years earlier. At that time there were a number of football teams in King’s Lynn, the most notable probably being Lynn United, Lynn CEYMS and Lynn Alexander – the later competing in the Norfolk County Cup along with Lynn Town in the 1881-82 season. At one time King’s Lynn could claim to be the centre of football in Norfolk. It was in the Black Horse in Chapel Street, that the Norfolk Football Association was formed in 1881 and prior to the arrival of professionalism in Norwich in 1905 King’s Lynn were regarded as probably the strongest team in the County. The town had it’s own football newspaper – The Lynn Football Star which was published from 3 October 1903 to 23 January 1915, three copies of this are in the King’s Lynn Museum. In those days, it is said the football team had the nickname of “The Shrimpers”, although there seems little evidence of this in match reports, and their colours were not always as they are now with black and white being mentioned in some newspaper reports. The match report for the game against Cromer Town, on 17 March 1923, says that King’s Lynn “played in their new colours of old gold and royal blue” so perhaps this was the first time the now traditional colours were adopted, although black and white stripes were re-adopted in the mid 1920’s. Early league action saw the Club play in the Norfolk & Suffolk League and additionally in the East Anglian League, winning the former on 8 occasions. Football in those days had something of a charm to it in that the outcome was never too certain. Indeed on more than one occasion it is recorded that the visiting team refused to complete the match for fear of missing the train home. It is said that after the First World War, Lynn Town changed their name to King’s Lynn, although photographs of the team in 1908 shows them under a KLFC banner. It wasn’t until 1935 – 36 season that Lynn changed competitions by joining the Eastern Counties League and also the East Midlands League. After the Second World War King’s Lynn played in the United Counties League, but on turning “Professional” for 1948 – 49 season they moved back to the Eastern Counties League and achieved the League and League Cup double in the 1953 – 54 season. A brief spell in the Midland League, where they played such “Midland based” teams as Rotherham and Scarborough, they joined the Southern League for the 1958 – 59 season. King’s Lynn geographical position, and the structure of Non League competitions, has always meant a fair degree of travelling, whether it be to Taunton and Poole or Gateshead and Workington. A restructuring of the non league system at the end of 1979 – 80 season saw King’s Lynn moved to the Northern Premier League. This was quite a remarkable promotion as the 1979 – 80 season saw us finish in 8th position in the Midland Division of the Southern League. Not surprisingly the first season in the Northern Premier League was a struggle, finishing in 19th position. The following season saw a very creditable 5th position finish, followed by a 9th position finish and winning the Northern Premier League President’s Cup. Unfortunately it was a trophy King’s Lynn were never allowed to defend as they were moved back to the Southern League for 1983 – 84 season. Their return South saw them finish in 6th position and finishing Runners Up the following season, the promotion contest being decided on the last day of the season. There then followed a number of very disappointing seasons with King’s Lynn being relegated to the Midland Division at the end of the 1986 – 87 season. Further relegations might have followed but for other teams either opting to join other leagues or going out of business. King’s Lynn won the Southern League Eastern Division in the 2003 – 04 season, but failure to win a “Play-off” against the Western Division Champions, Redditch United, for a place in the restructured Conference feeder leagues, resulted in King’s Lynn taking a place in the revamped Southern Premier League. The 2005 – 06 and 2006 –07 seasons saw King’s Lynn reach the play-offs for the Conference Regional Leagues, but once again just could not achieve the final step upwards. In the 2007 – 08 season, King’s Lynn were successful in securing promotion to Conference North after winning the Southern League title on the last day of the season, with a victory of 2 – 0 at Merthyr Tydfil, finishing 2 points clear of Team Bath. Unfortunately, due to ground grading issues, the Club was demoted after finishing in 17th place in the 2008 – 09 season. The following season, playing in the Northern Premier League, the Club could not complete their campaign, due to being wound up in the High Court in December 2009 over an unpaid £77,000 amount owing to HMRC. In January 2010 the Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk awarded the Lease of The Walks Stadium to the Company running the very successful Speedway Team in King’s Lynn. The Club was reformed for 2010 – 11 season, joining the United Counties League, where they were runners up, with 103 points, to St. Neots Town with 105 points. The following season 2011-12, King’s Lynn Town finished on 106 points, runners up to the U.C.L. Premier Division winners Long Buckby, who accumulated 108 points. King’s Lynn Town were promoted to Step 4 of the Contributory League System, joining The Northern Premier League in 2012-13 season, based on the highest average points per game achieved by all Clubs who finished in the runners up position at Step 5. In their first season back in the Northern Premier League, King’s Lynn Town won the Division One South title with 92 points, moving into the Premier Division, Step 3, for

4

Bedworth United v Kings Lynn Town FC

KINGS LYNN TOWN FC the season 2013-14, finishing in the top half of the League.. The Club’s Reserves have also had a very successful 4 seasons. In the 2010–11 season they convincingly won the U.C.L. Reserves Division 2 title and in 2011–12 won the U.C.L. Reserves Division 1 title. Moving into the Peterborough and District League, for the 2012-2013 season, they became Champions of Division 1. In the 2013-14 season they won the Premier Division of the Peterborough and District League, Step 7 of the National Contributory League and move to Level 6 competing in the Eastern Counties League for the current season. One of the lesser known facts that may come up in a sports trivia quiz is that King’s Lynn are one of the most successful teams in the F.A.Cup. Successful, that is, in terms of the proportion of games won compared to the number of games played. King’s Lynn’s F.A. Cup debut came in 1900 – 01 season and ended in the third qualifying round, with defeat against Luton Town at the Walks Stadium, having accounted for Kirkley, Harwich and Lowestoft in the previous rounds. This must have been quite a season for King’s Lynn, as they also reached the final of the F.A. Amateur Cup. King’s Lynn took Crook Town to a replay but lost by a score line of 3 – 0, this being in the era before Cup finals were played at Wembley. The next notable foray in the F.A.Cup was in 1906, when home advantage was conceded, and travelling to Aston Villa the match was lost by 11 – 0 in front of a 23,000 crowd. Cup success, in terms of appearances in the First Round Proper of the competition, was hard to come by prior to the Second World War, although defeat in the qualifying rounds often came at the hands of what might now be considered tough opposition such as Shrewsbury, Southend and Stockport County. The visit of Exeter City, in the First Round Proper of the competition in the 1951 – 52 season, saw King’s Lynn defeated by 3 – 1 in front of their biggest gate of 13,000. According to match reports there may have been a very different result, if only the team in the second half had played as well as they did in the first half, although they only finished the game with ten fit players. (No substitutes in those days.) The 1959 – 60 season produced a dream Cup draw in Norfolk terms, Norwich versus King’s Lynn. The only trouble was that Norwich had to overcome Reading in a Cup replay, but unfortunately Norwich lost. So King’s Lynn went to Reading in the Second Round Proper and lost 2 – 4. A few seasons later King’s Lynn reached the Third Round Proper, their only appearance at this stage of the Cup, they bowed out of the competition, defeated by Everton, playing in front of a crowd of 44,916 at Goodison Park and receiving a very nice share of the proceeds which amounted to £4,300. Previously in this season’s Cup, King’s Lynn defeated Coventry City, which resulted in the sack of the Coventry Manager who was replaced by a certain Mr. Jimmy Hill. Had it not been for King’s Lynn’s Cup exploits, it may be claimed, Jimmy Hill may never have become the household name he is today. (KLFC has much to answer for!!) History was made in the 2006 – 07 season, when King’s Lynn reached the Second Round Proper of the Cup, being drawn at home to League Division 1 side Oldham Athletic. The match was chosen by Sky Sports to be broadcast live, whilst BBC Radio Five ran live commentary on the second half. In addition to reaching an international audience, the Club received £75,000 from Sky Sports and £4,500 from BBC Radio, although a substantial sum had to be spent in advance on ground improvements in order to obtain a crowd safety certificate to get the ground capacity increased to 5,733. ect and in May 1955 the Club announced that it had sold the now fifty year old stand to a Spalding firm and had planning permission for a new grandstand made of brick and steel, which would be over two hundred feet in length with seating for 1,400 and a front enclosure for a further 3,000. The plan was to have a ground that could provide covered accommodation for 8,000. In August 1956 the aim was realised. On Saturday 18th August, 1956 the new grandstand was opened by Mr. Arthur Drewry, the Chairman of the F.A. and President of F.I.F.A. The grandstand cost £27,000 to build and a crowd of over six thousand attended the opening at the Midland League fixture, in which Rotherham United Reserves defeated King’s Lynn by 2 – 1. The F.A. Cup run, culminating in the visit to Everton was probably one of the few bright spots in the 1960’s as the Club struggled against debt. In the early months of 1960 the Club was wound up and restarted as a Limited Company and almost immediately a “Save the Linnets” fund was launched. An amount of £5,000 was required to complete the football season. Finances have, in effect, dominated the fortunes of the Club ever since and therefore changes to the ground have been more modest. A new Club, now known as King’s Lynn Town, was formed in early 2010. Commencing in May 2010, the new owners totally gutted the changing rooms and function rooms, producing very high standard of upgrades to facilities for both spectators and guests. Ticketing systems and new turnstiles were installed together with fences being replaced. Alterations and improvements are continuing to upgrade the ground standards. After a long layoff due to no fixtures for the Under 14 Lions it was decided to keep them ticking along that we would get a friendly game arranged. W EG ST Boarstall and Berkswell took up the challenge and came to The Oval to play against a vastly O O R O W B Y IN DU L U TBALL C depleted Lions side who were missing top scorer Kyle Rogers due to a broken wrist, Goalkeeper Harrison who was sunning himself in Thailand (His mother has been warned that no holidays are now allowed during the football season) Will Crowder was ill and unfortunately due to personal reasons Harvey Billington has had to leave the team. We wish Harvey all the best in everything he does and we can promise there will always be a place for him should circumstances allow him to return. With the loss of 3 of our regular starters it was very much a reshuffled team that faced the visitors. The game started off fairly evenly even though a few of the lions players were playing in positions that they were unaccustomed to and were finding there feet. Unfortunately one of these enforced changes led to a little bit of naivety in the back 3 which allowed the Berkswell forward to break free and score past Alex Murphy who was standing in between the posts. The Lions players started to fight back and got a well deserved equaliser from Liam Penevega who capitilised on a loose ball and fired the ball home with ease. The Lions weren’t really playing as well as they can and with the enforced changes the shape and fluidity that they normally show wasn’t there. Berkswell then started to exert more pressure on the Lions Back 3 and had it not been for Alex in goal would have ran away with the game. The second goal was always coming and it was eventually scored when a cross into the box wasn’t dealt with and the ball fell kindly to a Berkswell player who finished well to send the Lions down 2-1 at half time. At Half time a few stern words were spoken and we hoped that the Lions would go out into the second half in a more positive frame of mind unfortunately it didn’t seem to have worked had it not been for some great defensive work from our own John Terry, Josh Palmer and Luke Stewart and if they got beaten stand in keeper Alex Murphy was playing a blinder. With 10 minutes to go a change of formation allowed us to move John out to right wing back hoping that we might win the ball further up the pitch and protect our back 3 from the passing play down that side that Berkswell were exploiting, Josn in his own fashion whilst winning the ball high up left 2 Berkswell players crumpled on the floor with both needing treatment. Whilst this was going on Nash Asquith decided to get all the Lions lads together in a huddle and laid the facts down that they were not going to get beaten today. His rousing speech seemed to breathe some life into the Lions and within a couple of minutes the equaliser was found John yet again won the ball out right midway inside the Berkswell half fed Nash who dispatched the ball into the net to equalise. The last 10 minutes was played out at a frenetic pace with both teams going for the win unfortunately even though the Lions had the better of the chances they couldn’t capitalise. Man of the match went to Nash Asquith for the way he took it on his own head to lift the lads and ensure that we didn’t lose. Next week were back into league action against Cov Sphinx the side will still be depleted but if they can play like they did in the last 10 minutes they should have nothing to fear.

U12’s great win…

Last week we took on 2nd in the league, who beat us in our last encounter 3-1. It was a wet and cold morning at Ash Green School. All the lads seemed up for the task and in the team talk W EG ST we outlined how we needed to play to come away with the win. The home team got the game O O R O W B Y IN DU L U TBALL C underway, the ball was bobbling around on the muddy pitch but the lads were moving the ball around nicely and moving up the pitch just the last ball was letting us down. Bedworth were having most of the play, creating some good chances but just missing the target, then we broke up a Till Hill attack and played the ball through to Phin who played it out the Ethan, Ethan got his head up and played it through to Maddox whose shot was blocked he reacted first and put the ball in the back of the net. The lads were having a lot of the ball then Till Hill broke down the left and we conceded a free kick of the edge of the box, Tom set his wall the player shot but straight into the arms of Tom. Just before the break Tom made a great save tipping onto the bar and then gathering the ball. We continued to keep them at bay and kept attacking. Halftime Bedworth United 1 Till Hill United 0. The half time team talk was to praise the lads for the great team work they had put in this first half and good football they were playing. We just need to go out and get that 2nd goal to have that cushion. We had to move players around a bit due to our 2 fullbacks not feeling well. So Phin and Harry slotted in at the back. Till Hill got the 2nd half underway and it was just like the first with Bedworth taking control, using every inch of the pitch with the lads moving the ball around with some good footwork and quick one two’s. Every time they tried to break we were breaking their attack down with Phinley going from box to box in the centre of midfield. All the lads were putting in the effort in a very physical game. We then broke down the left with a through ball to Kayne and the little fella put it in the back of the net showing you don’t have to be tall to be good. Bedworth 2 Till Hill 0. Moving into the last 10 minutes of the game Till Hill broke with a long ball and Tom cleared the danger only to get taken out by their winger. Tom got back up and carried on. We continued to dominate the game but the 3rd goal would not come and so it ended with a great win for Bedworth 2-0 Goal Scorers Maddox & Kayne Man of the match Phinley

Boardroom announcement There have been some changes made recently to the executive board of the football club. Dr Phil Earl has decided to leave the club at the end of this season. Phil has stood down from the role as Vice-chairman with immediate effect and will continue as an executive director for the remainder of the season. Phil has given great service to Bedworth United as Vice-chairman and a great ambassador for non-league football. All at Bedworth United wish Phil best wishes for the future and thank him for all his fantastic work and support he has given the club. We are delighted to announce that Alan Ison has been elected into the role as Vice-chairman. Alan works tirelessly behind the scenes of the club being up here daily and has a great understanding of finances keeping the clubs accounts running smoothly. He will continue in his role as Finance director as well as the Vice chairman post. The club have also made the appointment of two executive directors: Liam Moore Liam is a long time supporter and sponsor of the club and has been instrumental in bringing junior football under the clubs banner. He currently manages the Under 15’s and is Chairman of the Junior section and is a great ambassador for the club within the junior leagues. He has been the driving force behind getting all the junior teams training and as many as possible playing at The Oval. Barry Wheway Barry has been a very proactive member of the club for a while now becoming our matchday photographer and having an instrumental hand in this seasons program which is a vast improvement on previous years. He has been involved at a few football clubs most recently with Burton Albion, but has found his home here at Bedworth United and we hope that he has a long and productive association with the club. We wish all three continued success with the club and sure you will all agree that with these three joining the Chairman the club will continue to thrive and is in safe hands. If you are interested in becoming a member of the board and feel that you have something to bring to the club then please approach either Neill or Alan or will be happy to discuss any possibilities with you.

The running costs for operating the U21’s is a lot more than most people would imagine with referee and linesman fees alone often coming in at around £120. So we have introduced player sponsorship. The cost of sponsoring a Player is £40 for the season and for that your name will be printed next to the player in every match day programme. Each time the player is mentioned on twitter the player sponsor will also be mentioned and we will also provide coverage on the club website. Bedcroc will visit each sponsor and have pictures taken which we will be added to the match day programme and thus provide even more coverage for the sponsor. We currently have 13 players sponsored players and are looking to add another 9. If you are a small business or just a fan we would appreciate your support in sponsoring our U21 players.

FROM THE BACK OF THE STAND a supporter’s eye view In our last game here at “The Oval” three weeks ago, we played local rivals Barwell, but as we failed to get on the score sheet once again, we ended up losing by a single goal. We followed this up with a trip to Alvechurch and once again we failed to score while Alvechurch managed to find the back of the net three times. Just as in the Barwell game we had chances which we failed to take; and although we can have no complaints with the result the scoreline did flatter Alvechurch. This took us to Rushall Olympic last Saturday where we hoped our fortunes would change. At times we were much the better side and made several chances which on any other day would have gone in, but it sums up our luck at the moment as once again we failed to score, however we did keep a clean sheet which meant we brought home a well-deserved point for a goal-less draw. Not for the first time this season the opposition supporters were telling us how well they thought we’d played and what are we doing at the bottom of the League, kind words, but they don’t help us get results, even if we do agree with them. How things change when we’re not doing very well, one of the more senior Rushall supporters reminded me that on several occasions in the past our fans had totally outnumbered them when we’d been to their Dales Lane ground, and although there were a few more Greenbacks supporters at Rushall last Saturday and for the Alvechurch away game it was only a fraction of those who followed us in the recent past. We’re now sixteen points behind the fourth from bottom club with only eleven games left, so it will take something of a miracle to prevent us going down, however until the trap door finally closes we must stick at it, and who knows what might happen? To be honest, almost everyone here is resigned to us being relegated, and I was recently asked would I like us to stay at this level and in this League only

to struggle once again, or drop down a level where we’d hope to be more than competitive. In truth I’d like us to stay where we are and be among the front runners, but I can’t see it happening, so let’s just say I hope I’m wrong! This afternoon we welcome Kings Lynn Town here to “The Oval” for the second time since they reformed in 2010, the first being in 2015-16, when we lost both home and away fixtures by the same score, 3-0. We’ve met their predecessors Kings Lynn FC many times before, the last time being in 1995-6 when they finished 2nd in the Southern League Midland and were automatically promoted as there were no play-offs in those days. Nuneaton Borough (another team since reformed) topped the table that year and we were third, which at the time was our highest finish in the pyramid in our more recent history. Earlier this season, back in November we went to kings Lynn’s “The Walks” stadium returning with a point from a well-earned 1-1 draw. and we hoped that it would give us a boost. Unfortunately we lost the next three, which just goes to show what it’s been like being a Greenbacks supporter at this time. Last Saturday “The Linnets” beat Redditch 2-0 at home and looking at the League tables if they manage to keep their current form it looks as if they should comfortably make the play-offs. Although we wish them well, maybe we can restore some of our self-esteem and put a dent in their ambitions this afternoon? After all, everyone keeps telling us we’re a much better side than our present League Table position indicates. Before I close I must congratulate Debi Dreher (who runs Debs shed) on becoming a grandmother for the first time, because her daughter Jacky gave birth to a little girl a week ago yesterday, very well done and congratulations to all concerned!
