I would like to welcome all connected with Barwell Town FC for the league cup match this evening.

Barwell have made a steady start to their league campaign and have been a well-established step 3 club for many years stabilising their league status year on year.

After Halesowens’ late winner Saturday it can be so easy to be depressed, but there is no point. There has been steady progression and the players are learning and if they keep giving everything our luck will soon change. The game was so evenly poised it could have easily gone either way and one lapse in concentration cost us.

The game tonight will give us an opportunity to try a few things and players to stake a claim to either keeping their shirt or earning one. There will be plenty of opportunity for players at BUFC as we do not have a large squad. In turn we are always looking to improve the squad if the right player is available at the right price.

I am staying very positive as always. I know football very well, it can be very cruel at times, but I do know it can change very quickly with a bit of belief and form.

Enjoy the game.

BARWELL FC

The Club played for the first time in the Midland Combination under the name of Barwell FC in the 1992/3 season when Barwell Athletic from the Leicestershire Senior League joined forces with Hinckley FC. Barwell became one of the founder members of the Midland Football Alliance League on its formation in 1994/95. The Sports complex with its bowling, cricket, football facilities and sports club is situated just out of the centre of the village making it an ideal venue for local residents.

The facilities of the complex include a cricket pitch - which was used for two Leicestershire first eleven county championship matches just after the Second World War, is a current venue for some Leicestershire second eleven and youth team matches. There is an outdoor bowling green and a magnificent indoor bowls centre complete with bar and restaurant.

Floodlights were installed prior to the 1992/93 season and have been updated to comply with current FA lighting regulations. A covered stand was built prior to 1996/7 season and during the 1997/8 close season the ground was enclosed, an important step in our quest for higher status. Towards the end of 2000/01 season a new 250 seat cantilever stand was erected at Kirkby Road, and officially opened by goalkeeper Chris Kirkland on 31st July 2001 - a Barwell lad.

Barwell reached the last sixteen of the FA Vase in 1995/6 their highest finish in the completion losing 3-1 away at Flixton. Other honours include the Leicestershire Senior Cup in 1996/7, the Presidents Trophy in August 1997. They have also reached the final of the Westerby Cup (played at Filbert Street and latterly the Walkers Stadium) on 3 occasions 1999/2000, 2000/01 and 2004/5 unfortunately losing all three finals to Leicester City, Hinckley Utd and Oadby Town respectively. Barwell also reached the League Cup Final losing after extra time to Rushall Olympic.

A new Manager, Bob Steel, took over the reins at Barwell in February 2004 and brought in Steve Greenhill and Ian Blyth as Assistant Managers ( with Ian also being coach). He steadied the side and instilled his way of playing into the players and is gradually getting the squad he wants.

2005/6 finally put some silverware on the shelf when Barwell won the Polymac services league cup final at Walsall’s Bescot Stadium, beating Leamington 3-1.

2006/7 saw Barwell finish in a disappointing 6th position and come runners up in both the Westerby Cup and the Rolleston Charity Cup. It was also the first season for Barwell’s Youth team who played in the Leicestershire Midweek Floodlit Youth League finishing a creditable 6th in the League and to round things off the reserves also finished 6th with a great run of results to finish the season.

2007/08 was a somewhat mixed season for the Club. The first team saw two change of Manager, Bob Steel stood down in November to take on the running of the Sports Bar on the complex and his Assistant Ian Blyth took over as manager, after a run of indifferent results and the team slipping toward the bottom three the Club decided to appoint a new Manager in Marcus Law. Marcus took over the reigns in February and with a run of good result lifted the Club to a respectable mid-table finish. The Reserves had a great season, despite losing a lot of players to the first team, finishing 3rd with the Youth team finishing runners up.

2008/09 was Marcus’s first full season at the Club and he has brought in Paul O’Brien as his Assistant with Coach Lee Knibbs and Gk Coach Pat Pattinson and Physio Alan Cooke. This was The Clubs best season to date, they finished runners up in the League on 91 points and also won the Westerby Cup beating Quorn 2-0 at the Walkers Stadium. Barwell have started the new season on a high by lifting the Joe McGorrian trophy at Market Drayton by beating the home team 4-0.

2009/10 proved to be our most successful season to date. The season started well with the lads winning the Joe McGorian Cup at 2008/09 league winners Market Drayton. After 16 season in the MFA we finally won the league and promotion to The Evo-Stik Northern Premier League. The League was won in style with the team playing 42 games winning 36 and drawing 6 with no losses and amassing a League record 114 points. They also scored 125 goals and conceded only 18. The season was also a

successful one in the FA Vase where we reached the semi final losing in the last minute of the second leg to the eventual winners Whitley Bay. 2010/11..Again proved to be a very successful season. The season started where the last one had finished on a winning streak. In September the Manager Marcus Law left, with our best wishes, for a full time post at Kettering Town. Assistant Manager Paul O’Brien took over with Jimmy Ginnelly taking the post of Assistant Manager, unfortunately Paul had to step down due to work commitments and so he and Jimmy swapped places for our 3rd change in two months. As always with a new Manager there are comings and goings but Jimmy managed to retain most of the Squad and won the Evo Stik Division 1 South at the first attempt.

2011/12..During the closed season Barwell were put into the Evo Stik League Southern Premier Division and so for the first time were competing at level 3 .

Paul O’Brien left the Club during the close season to take up a coaching position with Ex. Manager Marcus Law now at Tamworth, Martin Hier stepped up to Assistant Manager and Craig Woodley joined the Club as Coach, Rob Lawrence also came on board as GK Coach. Craig Woodley left for a job in America and Steve Anastasi came on board as coach. The team finished a creditable 9th in their first season and now look forward to improving on this in the forthcoming season.

2012/13..The Club sat in the top 5 of the League for the major part of the season but form dipped in the last couple of months and they lost out on a play off place with a draw on the last day of the season leaving Barwell in 8th position. Two or three experienced players joined at the start of the season and with a mixture of youth and experience improved on last season.

2013/14..Barwell were moved from the Southern League back to the Northern Premier League. A very difficult season lay ahead, after settling in the Southern League they now had to get used to the ways of the North. They had a reasonable start but dipped badly during the Middle part of the season and were down in the relegation battle but they turned it round and finished in a creditable 14th position.

2014/15..In their second season back in the Northern Premier League Barwell did not make the start they hoped for and after a few weeks found themselves bottom of a very strong League. A couple of players then returned from injury/suspension and they began to put results together and at the end of the season finished a creditable 7th=. They also had a good FA Cup & Trophy run and topped the season off when they won the Westerby Challenge Trophy at the King Power stadium beating neighbours Coalville Town 2-1 with goals from Nigel Julian & Jamie Hood.

2015/16..Finished a creditable 9th in the League after a great run in January/February where they had 12 straight wins. They also recorded their best FA Cup run when they got to the 1st round proper losing to National League South team Welling United 2-0. Craig Woodley joined the coaching staff as fitness coach.

2016/17..A poor start to the League saw Barwell finish 14th at the end of the season. Poor FA Cup and Trophy results saw quite a disappointing season. The highlight was winning the Leicestershire Challenge Cup at The King Power Stadium beating our neighbours Coalville Town.

2017/18 Once again poor FA cup/Trophy were very disappointing, but a 9th place league position was a creditable finish. Next season sees Barwell feature in the new Southern Central Premier division with new ground to visit and less travelling over the season.

So far this season Home: Stoubridge 1-1, Kettering 0-1, Royston 1-2, Biggleswade 0-0 Away: Redditch 4-2, Needham Market 2-0, Coalville 0-1, Leiston 1-0 Scorers: Hickey 5, McDonald 3 Barwell are currently 10th in the table.

Liam Castle Castle is entering his 13th season with the club and has virtually been an ever-present at Kirkby Road under Jimmy Ginnelly. The goalkeeper has achieved plenty of league and cup success with the Canaries and will be hoping to replicate that this season.

Jean-Ruben Desrosiers Joined from Carlton Town experienced centre back, also had spells at Coalville & Loughborough Ryan Brown 18-year-old Ryan Brown will provide back-up for Liam Castle, following his departure from Nuneaton Borough where he played in the youth team.

Elliot Percival The former Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday defender signed for Barwell last summer. Percival is now one of the key players in Jimmy Ginnelly’s side and can play all across the back four. His fantastic attitude both on and off the pitch will set him up for a long and successful career in the game.

Jai Rowe Signed from Nuneaton Borough this summer, Jai is an exciting full back and is the youngest member of our squad this season. The youngster impressed during our pre-season friendlies and the management team decided to sign him as quickly as possible.

Brad-Lee Gascoigne Gascoigne is an experienced defender, having played for neighbours Nuneaton Borough. Brad is based in Mansfield but revealed that he feels ‘the most settled he has ever been at a club’ so does not mind the travel.

Liam Kay Liam is an experienced defender at our level. However, due to work commitments, he is often unavailable on a Saturday afternoon. Despite this, he is a fantastic option for Jimmy Ginnelly to have, should he be available.

Guy Hadland - (Assistant manager) Assistant manager Guy Hadland has signed player registration forms for the season as cover in the centre back area. The former Nuneaton Town defender has served as Jimmy’s assistant for several years and his knowledge and passion for football provides a huge boost to the squad.

Liam Cross Liam is a young centre half signed from Bedworth United Under-21s this summer. The youngster is a calm and composed defender who could thrive under Jimmy Ginnelly this season, as he looks to get his first taste of senior football with the Canaries.

Eddy Nisevic As trustworthy as non-league left backs come, Eddy has been at Barwell for several years and is committed to the club. He is a solid defender and can also create dangerous opportunities when he travels forward down the left wing.

Nigel Julien Club captain Nigel celebrated his testimonial over the summer and has committed to the club once again. The tenacious central midfielder isn’t afraid to get stuck in and

recover the ball. He can also create attacks from deep for the Barwell side.

Jake Heath Joined Barwell last season and is a player who travels a distance coming from Staffordshire. He finished last season really strongly in a holding midfield role and continued his form into pre-season.

Brady Hickey Brady will be the team captain this season. The attacking midfielder re-joined us last season after a brief spell at Nuneaton Town and will look to rediscover the form he displayed before he left the club previously.

Blair Anderson Well known to Barwell fans for his previous spell at the club, Blair has returned to the club this summer after time at Coalville Town. The winger has pace and is an exciting addition to the squad.

Ben Ashby Ashby is a versatile midfielder who can play on either wing, as well as centrally if needed. Recently spent time at Rugby Town but has now made the step up to the Evo-Stik Southern League Central.

Tom Bates Tom is a very popular figure in the dressing room and has taken a new coaching role with the club. However, he is still registered as a player and will be called upon throughout the season, if needed.

Owen Story 33-year-old Story is another player who has re-signed for the club. He is a versatile midfielder who can play on either wing, as well as centrally or at left back. The former Brackley man brings a lot of experience to a relatively young attacking midfield department.

Alex Tomkinson Alex has rejoined Barwell after a spell at Worcester City, speedy midfield player Jake Warmington Former Aston Villa youngster Jake joined us last season. A talented wide midfielder.

Massiah McDonald Having spent last season at Coalville Town and Stafford Rangers, McDonald joined Barwell this summer. The Montserrat international has set himself a target of 15 goals for the season.

Kian Williams 18 year old forward currently in the 3rd year of his scholarship with Leicester City. Kian has joined Barwell to get a taste of senior football after a serious injury.

Dominic Brown-Hill Young central defender has played youth football at Leicester City, Rangers and more recently Notts County where he was loaned out to Shaw Lane.

Elliott Taylor Young keeper who was on Nuneaton Towns books last season.

Spencer Weir-Daley Montserrat International striker who lists Notts County, Boston, Corby and Kettering amongst his former Clubs.

The club will not be responsible for damage to any property, person or persons, by reason of installation of floodlighting or erection of pylons on THE OVAL. We request all persons, including children, refrain from climbing or interfering with these ground fixtures. The club does not accept responsibility for the safe custody of any vehicles or articles thereon or for any damage to vehicles or articles however caused.

All vehicles left on these premises are in all respects at the owners risk.

If a match is abandoned, for whatever cause, before half-time, spectators will be issued with a complimentary ticket (on production of their gate ticket) to be used whenever the game is replayed or for any other league match.

NO TICKET will be given once the match has been played for more than 45 minutes.

The under 14 Lions were looking to build on their first win in the A league against Leamington Brakes Gold. The match started with Leamington trying to get an O O R O W B Y IN DU L U early breakthrough and put the Lions under pressure early on after weathering the TBALL C early onslaught the lions grew in confidence and started to build some of their own attacks and put a bit of pressure on the visitors and possibly having the miss of the season. Unfortunately though it was Leamington who gained the early advantage after 13 minutes when a ball into the box was unfortunately dropped by the Lions keeper and in the ensuing scramble it was prodded home by Leamington.

Again this season the Lions boys seem to respond quickly after going a goal down and 10 minutes later found themselves back on level terms with Kyle rogers beating 3 men in the box to then finish from an acute angle to square the game back up again. With 2 mins to play in the half the Lions then took the lead with Liam Penavega netting with a shot after coming in from the right to unleash a powerful shot into the goal. Thinking that was going to be the end of the half the lads took their foot off the pedal a bit and with the last kick of the half Leamington drew level with a long ball which The Lions centre backs failed to deal with allowing the Leamington Centre forward a one on one he wasn’t going to miss.

The second half started with the Lions dictating play but missing a lot of opportunities to put the game to bed the 3rd goal for the Lions came midway through the half when Kyle put a cross in to the box which Liam met and dispatched past the Leamington keeper to restore the Lions lead. The lead didn’t last long though with Leamington picking up a ball on the right and their player noting the Lions Keeper was off his line chipped him to even up the score again. Then with only about 5 minutes left Leamington took the lead again when The Lions failed to clear the ball 3 times and leaving the Leamington striker with only Harrison to beat from 8 yards out. To the credit of the Lions and their never say die attitude they managed with the last attack of the game to snatch a point from the game when a long ball found Kyle who raced away from the Leamington defence to equal the score.

Man of the match went to Euan Crisp who has started to develop his defensive game a lot more and support the defence from wide and is becoming a lot more physical against players.

All in all not to bad a game we should maybe have saw out but going behind a game that we did well to get a point out of. If we had been offered 3 games into the teams first season in the A League 4 points and sitting 4th in the League we would have took it happily. We look forward now with some trepidation to our next game against the champions of the last 2 seasons Cov Sphinx Whites the boys will be up for it this is what they have worked so hard for over the last 4 seasons to compete against the top sides in the area.

U16 win local derby…

Bedworth Utd U16’s moved to top spot in the C league with a win at local rivals Bulkington. In a well contested first half chances were few and far between but it was the Greenbacks who opened the scoring when Connor Hill drilled a low effort into the net from 12 yards after a goalmouth scramble.

Bulkington though came back strong in the second half and got level following another scramble from a corner . The Bedworth lads though came again and Aiden Barrow hit a 30 yarder against the bar and Harvinder Heer had a goal chalked off after a dubious looking offside decision. The Bulkington lads though looked like they may hold on for a hard fought point but Connor Ross had other ideas and notched 2 late goals to grab all 3 points for his team . Aiden Barrow then had another effort come off the woodwork and was unlucky not to get in the goal scoring act ! The Greenbacks were not at their best but did enough to win this local derby!

Over 50’s Walking Football

Raise funds in to help fight Prostate cancer

Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer among men, but it can often be treated successfully, the month of September was the month designated to raise awareness of this cancer, Walking Football clubs and groups throughout the UK were brought into action to raise monies for the fight against this cancer.

A combined effort from Bedworth and Coventry (SBiTC) saw the regulars get together and do different events to raise money, at Bedworth two friendlies were arranged with other teams from Wilnecote and Birmingham, these were followed by a raffle and social in Bedworth United FC clubhouse, they were added to by Brew & Cake mornings organised by Elaine and John Slack at St Finbarr’s and Bedworth United.

Fundraising events received great support and the walking footballers would like to offer their thanks to all who made cakes, donated raffle prizes, bought prostate cancer items and gave up their time to support the efforts to raise funds, we are delighted to announce that £720 was raised. #UnitedAgainstCancer

AWAY DAY NEUTRALS VISIT TO THE OVAL

For our first game of the season we had a visit from away day neutrals 2 guys who tour the world watching football on a shoestring budget and they have wrote a great blog about their day, below are some snippets from their blog the full review and pictures of Away Day Neutrals visit to the club are available on their website at www.awaydayneutrals.com

“For those that don’t know the history, let us provide a quick synopsis. During the CONIFA World Football Cup this summer we met so many fantastic people involved in non-league football we decided that our first trip this year would be to a non-league team in the UK. Our aim was to take our usual European budget (up to £150 each) and use it to sponsor a team in some way. We got Mark Clattenburg, ex-FIFA referee, to randomly pick a team and that team proved to be Bedworth United.

We contacted Neill Rayson-Randle, to get a bit more about the history and the ethos of the club. Neill was quick to win us over and with every passing minute we were increasingly happy that Mr Clattenburg had picked this wonderful club out of the hat (or technically sandwich bag).

Bedworth United are everything that is right about lower league football. Everyone at the club are volunteers. Everyone has a great love of the club. The club is all about the local community.

Debz Shed is a bit of an institution in these parts and serves as a club shop/coffee hut/snack bar but most importantly, the purveyor of Beduff Broth. This is a secret family recipe passed down through the generations to Debs and she cooks up a batch of it for every home game. It’s lovely, I could imagine going through quite a few cups of this on a cold winter day on the terraces. Even Little C enjoyed it and seemed to think whatever was in it was helping to ease the pain in his throat”.

a supporter’s eye view

After such a poor start to our season last Saturday we entertained Halesowen Town here at “The Oval” & once again we went home afterwards discussing what might have been. Prior to the kick-off, in spite of recent results we were quite optimistic of us doing well, however once again things didn’t go for us.

Sadly Halesowen’s keeper had to leave the field with a shoulder injury when the score was 0-0, & although we wish him well & hope it wasn’t as serious as it looked, we thought we might be able to take advantage when evergreen Lee Hughes took up the gloves, but it proved not to be the case. It looked as if it would finish as a goal-less draw but once again we conceded in the last few minutes to lose 1-0.

In the nine games we’ve played this term, last Saturday was only the second game in which we’ve failed to score, however in our home game the previous week visitors Banbury only had four shots on target, scoring from three of them & it’s typical of the way things are going for us at the moment, because although there were several near misses, Halesowen’s only shot on target during the whole game went in, in fact we had many more shots on target than our visitors but failed to find the back of the net. Needless to say, there were a lot of very disappointed Greenback’s supporters after the final whistle.

I honestly don’t know how to sum us up at the moment, everyone I speak to has their own idea as to where we’re going wrong & the opinions are many, varied, & very often contradictory, all I do know is that I’m sure that it’s not for the want of trying that were finding it difficult to register our first win?

Next Saturday we visit Royston Town a Club we last played when we were both in the Southern league Central. We beat them 3-1 the last time we were there which was in 2014, but this time around in a division higher we expect it will be a much harder affair, & with us struggling it will be interesting to see

how many of our followers make the trip, & I can’t help wondering how many will turn up tonight?

This evening we welcome Jimmy Ginnelly’s Barwell FC here to “The Oval” for the Southern League Challenge Cup, Round One. Tonight’s fixture is a repeat of last season’s League Cup competition for both Barwell & ourselves although then we both came under the banner of the Northern Premier League. I’m pleased to report that we won 2-0 here at “The Oval”, going on to play away at Mickleover Sports in the next round, unfortunately that was as far as we went in the competition with us losing 3-0. This is a competition in which we’ve never done very well in recent years never getting past the second round & only doing that twice in the last eight years.

Looking back through the records I find that the prior to last Season’s League Cup the last time we played in a competitive game against Barwell was in the 2012-13 season when we were both in the Southern League Premier Division. We met them four times that season, twice in the league, once in the FA Cup & in the Red Ins League cup. I’m sad to report that the best we did was a 1-1 home draw on Boxing Day. We lost the other League game 2-0 at Easter, lost 3-2 in the FA Cup, & 2-1 in the Red Ins Cup. Apart from last Season’s League Cup we don’t seem to do very well against them, do we?

As always it will be interesting to see what sort of sides are put out this evening & how the managers approach tonight’s game. With the greatest respect to the sponsors of this competition, as supporters it’s not one which is at the top of our priority list however as with all games it’s one we want to win & it would be nice to get one over near neighbours Barwell.

Maybe without the pressure of our recent League disappointments we can relax & manage to record our first win of this campaign, because however it comes & in whatever competition a win is something we desperately need to achieve.
