Good afternoon to you all for this FA cup tie this today.

I would especially like to welcome to the Oval, the supporters’ players, staff and board members of Atherstone Town FC, our visitors today.

The FA cup has the ability to bring excitement to a football club as anything can happen on the day, also in the following cup draw too. Games can be won or lost in a split second by managers’ coaches and officials but much more likely by the players, nobody knows what fate has in store.

The main aim is to progress to the next round and welcome any extra luck that comes to you on the day. There will be many familiar names on the Atherstone team sheet today; good players that have spent long periods and been successful at Bedworth United FC are now Adders, which will add a bit more spice to the match.

The Bedworth United players will be battling to keep the green shirt game by game as the squad is still in the developing stage. After a big wake up call on the opening day of the season we have showed a lot of character in the last two league games, being unfortunate not to collect all 3 points at Biggleswade on Saturday where a freak goal cost us.

Your encouraging support makes a lot of difference to the players’ performances and our clubs results. So please keep up the good positive support today for the boys in green.

HISTORY

ATHERSTONE TOWN FC

The original Atherstone Town club was formed in 1887, and after drifting between various local leagues, settled in the Birmingham Combination in 1911, where they remained until 1954. Prior to this the Adders had gained national recognition by reaching the semi-final of the FA Amateur Cup in both 1907 and 1909. After several decades of varying performance, the 1947-48 season saw the Adders claim the Birmingham Combination League and Cup double. In 1954 they stepped up to the Birmingham and District League (later renamed the West Midlands (Regional) League), where they were runners-up in 1972 and moved up to the Southern League. In their first season they gained promotion to the Premier Division, where their best position was third in 1973-74, but the club was forced into liquidation in the summer of 1979.

A group of local enthusiasts managed to fulfil the teams’ reserve fixtures in the West Midlands League under the name Atherstone United and then decided to continue under that name as a new club.

In 1982 the new club won promotion to the West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division, followed in 1986–87 by winning the Premier Division title and promotion to the Southern League Midland Division. Two years later they were promoted again, to the Southern League Premier Division, where they finished as high as 4th. However, the end of the 1999–00 season saw Atherstone relegated for the first time in either incarnation. The situation at the club worsened and in September 2003 Atherstone United were put into liquidation. Again a group of supporters formed a new Atherstone Town club.

In their debut season the new Atherstone Town were accepted into the Midland Combination Division One, winning the league and promotion at the first attempt along with the President’s Cup. In the 2005–06 season, they were the champions of the Midland Combination Premier Division and thus stepped up to the Midland Football Alliance. Further success in 2005–06 came in the Birmingham County FA Midweek Floodlit Cup and the Midland Combination Endsleigh Challenge Cup. In the 2007–08 season, the club won promotion again as champions of the Midland Football Alliance, the club’s third promotion in four seasons. The first season in the Southern League Midland Division saw the Adders in the top three for most of the season. At the end they finished third behind champions Leamington and near neighbours Nuneaton Town. They made the play-offs, only to lose to Chasetown. They did however win the GX Southern League Cup for the first time after beating Bridgwater Town in the two legged final.

Due to financial problems, the club had to resign from the Southern League mid-way during the 2010–11 season. In 2011–12 they played in the Midland Football Alliance but were relegated at the end of the season to the Midland Combination Premier Division.

Ivor Green took the Managers job for season 2013/14 and led the club to the 3rd Qualifying Round of the F.A. Cup, losing 4-0 to Barrow at Sheepy Road.

Also that season they reached the final of The Les James Challenge Cup at The Bescot Stadium, losing out 2-1 to Stafford Town.

Green resigned in October of the following season to be replaced by a management team consisting of ex-players Leigh Everitt, Malc Randle and Rich Williams who led the club to 13th place in MFL Division 1.

2015/16 saw Ivor Green return to the Managers seat and Justin Palmer take over as Chairman of the club, after a season of rebuilding and another 13th place finish.

2016/17 saw an upturn in fortune for the club and a successful season saw the Adders qualify for the F.A.Cup after a two year absence, with a 4th placed finish behind runaway champions Bromsgrove Sporting.

The 2017/18 season saw Adders pick up their first pieces of silverware for ten years when the won the BCFA Midweek Floodlit Cup, beating Racing Warwick 1-0 in the final and The J.W.Hunt Cup with a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Sporting. A third place finish in the league rounded off a great season for Ivor Greens’ side.

STUART STORER (manager) Stuart took over the managers’ role at Bedworth at Christmas 2013. The club were looking doomed at the foot of the table. Fortunately with the staff and players he brought to the club all rallied around to fight off relegation. Stuart played professional football for 19 years. Birmingham City, Wigan, Everton, Bolton Wanderers, Exeter City and Brighton and Hove Albion amassing 400 first class appearances. He played non league with Kettering, Chesham and Hinckley, before becoming a coach, he holds an A licence in coaching.

ANDY PENNY (assistant manager) Andy resides near Stafford and has had a long playing career. His first club was Tamworth before moving to Barnet, then Stafford Rangers. He then had a very successful spell at Bedworth United, the fans still remember this and he is a local hero. He also played for Solihull, Hinckley United, Redditch United, Stratford Town and finally hanging his boots up at Chasetown. Andy became the reserve manager at Chasetown before taking the assistant managers’ job at Hinckley United in 2013. After Hinckley United disbanded Andy took his present post at Bedworth FC. JAMIE LENTON (coach) Jamie started off his football career as a youngster at Coventry City. He was born in Bedworth and now resides in Coventry. Jamie had a successful non league playing career mainly with Hinckley United. Other clubs he has had short spells with are; Bedworth, Nuneaton, Leamington and Solihull. He made over 300 appearances for Hinckley mainly playing left wing back. He has a wealth of experience and knowledge in non league football.

MARK ALBRIGHTON The evergreen veteran joined the football club from Barwell FC in November 2013. The vastly experienced local player had several seasons professionally with Doncaster Rovers and loan periods with Chester City, Darlington and Cambridge City.

The defender also has a wealth of conference football experience, where he played for Telford, Stevenage Borough, Kidderminster Town and Nuneaton.

ALEX TROKE (Captain)

Alex joined the club in January 2018. He is a 25 year old midfield player that is quite versatile, with a good range of passing. His previous clubs were Notts County, Coalville and Shepshed. The manager signed him to bolster the squad in the promotion push and he is looking for another influential season at Bedworth again.

REECE BLACKMORE Reece is a 23 year old midfield player that signed at Bedworth last preseason. Reece started his football career at Derby County before going to Kettering and then playing more locally at Coventry Sphinx where Bedworth signed him. He had an excellent season with us last year and is hoping to carry on that form with BUFC this season.

DAN CRANE The experienced goal keeper was signed from Rushall Olympic in November 2017 season. He has had a host of previous clubs which include West Brom, Burton Albion, Rushden and Diamonds, Corby, Solihull and Hednesford. His wealth of knowledge and experience was a big factor in our success last season, a calm confident keeper with great communication skills.

JAKE WHITMORE The 21 year old full back is a new signing during the close season; he shows lots of ability, determination and has settled in well while he has been at Bedworth.

He was signed from Barwell where he played the majority of matches for them last year. Previous to this he had several years with Coventry City where a good football education has been schooled.

LUKE ROWE Luke is a local lad and he has grown in stature under the guidance of the coaching team. The 26 year old left sided player was one of the managers‘ first signings from Hinckley 5 years ago, where he played under our manager there. He has played in New Zealand for Wellington making several appearances for the New Zealand national youth team. He always seem to feature in the end of year award ceremonies.

ELLIOT PARROTT Elliot is becoming quite an experienced player despite his young age. The combative midfielder was a youngster at Coventry City and played for Nuneaton Town youth team before joining Bedworth.

He will have made approximately 100 appearances for the club and can play in a number of positions with relative ease. He swept up all the awards at last season’s promotion presentation evening.

DELROY GORDON Delroy started his football career at Rushden & Diamonds. His continued development has taken him across all the differing tiers of football with Kettering, Leamington, Corby and Rugby. Delroy is a calm strong player who’s experience will be invaluable in our success this season. He made many impressive displays for Stamford last season where we signed him from during this close season

BARRY FITZHARRIS Barry was brought to the club from Romulus by the manager in October 2017. His no nonsense approach and intelligence influenced the team in many matches last season. Barry has played for Coleshill, Solihull and Stratford previously and he had no hesitation in joining Bedworth. He made his debut with a screamer of a 30 yard goal and has never looked back.

DANNY DUBIDAT Danny is a well travelled striker. His non league career really kick off when he was with Bedworth when we gained promotion from the southern league.

Danny scored 30 odd goals and gained a good reputation. He has bounced with a few clubs since; Redditch, Leamington, Alvechurch and Rushall, but we are hoping that this close summer signing will enjoy playing back at Bedworth again finding the net regularly too.

KIERON BREHON Kieron is a 26 year old midfield player that has been at the football club since the start of 2015/16 season.

Kieron was signed at Nuneaton Town and developed his skills at Nuneaton Griff before having a couple of good seasons at Barwell in our present league. He reads the game very well in midfield and takes up intelligent positions. He plays several positions and can create as well as score important goals LEVI ROWLEY Levi is a forward player that has already had quite a few ups and downs in his short football career. The 21 year old signed at the beginning of last season from Rugby where he got relegated with them and before this he was released from Walsall as a young pro. He has also had loan spells at Stafford and Romulus, but has definitely bounced back settling in well at the Oval now and having the honour of scoring the winning goal in the play off final last season.

TOM SHARPE Tom is a calm assured defender; the 30 year old has had good football league experience earlier in his career at Bury before spending time with Kidderminister Harriers and Worcester City making an abundance of appearances in the conference leagues. His stop start season last year still led to him showing his quality when we needed it and we feel his experience will be valuable in this seasons campaign.

JAK JEYS A lively 23 year old striker who started his career at Highgate United scoring loads of goals Before moving to Rushall Olympic. He struggled to feature at Rushall before signing for Bedworth and playing well before moving to Stamford last year. He has also been at Coventry United, Sporting Khalsa and Romulus. He

started this pre season at Quorn before re signing for BUFC on the first day of the 2018/19 season

RYAN BALDWIN Ryan is a 20 year old right sided player with good potential. He has played youth team football for Leicester City, before joining Leamington to develop his talent further. He joined us 2 weeks before the start of the season, where we signed him from Barwell. He made 18 appearances for Barwell in a season where he fractured his foot. A creative player that also had a loan period with Coventry Sphinx too.

IYSEDEN CHRISTIE This vastly experienced centre forward has had an array of league clubs and quite a few non league clubs too with good goal ratios at each club. The veteran striker scored a number of important goals last season at Bedworth and a vital one in the play off final too. His main clubs were Coventry City, Mansfield , Kidderminster, Rochdale, Stevenage, Torquay and a host of non league outfits too. He has helped galvanise players in the dressing room with his knowledge, experience and discipline.

KAI TONGE Kai is a sort after wide player who many clubs at our level were trying to sign. The 21 year old he started football late has played for Whetstone and Hinckley last season. The well grounded player has had a 2 week trail at Tranmere Rovers before signing for Bedworth late preseason. He has lots of raw ability and a good attitude to learn.

KYLE MINTO Kyle is a 23 year old powerful striker; he joined the football club just before deadline day to bolster the squad as we made our push for the play off places last season. He was signed from Market Drayton FC and he has also played for Hinckley. His pace, attitude and direct approach are all positives in his game.

LEWIS NOON Lewis is a product of the progression route through the football club. The tidy midfield player has played for the club for several seasons making his way through the system and breaking his way into the first team last season. He possesses a good range of passing and has good composure too.

ADAM HARRISON Adam is a 20 year old goal keeper; he started his football career at Leicester City, where after serving an apprenticeship was released. He then joined BUFC and had a very successful season with the under 21 team, also making several appearances for the first team too, where he performed very well.

Pre-season has been very successful and the new players have slotted in well with the other lads & there seems a real buzz within the camp that this year could be a good year for the team. I would personally like to welcome, Rhys Middleton, Harvey Sullivan, Matthew Donaldson, Charlie Donaldson and Kyle Evans to the team.

After our break we went straight into the first of our pre season games against Burbage.

The lads had not trained for 3 weeks we wanted to use this game as a starting point to W EG ST see what aspects of the game we need to work on before the season starts.

O O R O W B Y IN DU L U TBALL C We told the lads beforehand that we wanted a performance rather than a result, We started the game really well with flowing passing moves that we have been encouraging the boys to play for the last few seasons. We must have had possession of the ball for at least 75% for the first 20 minutes but just could not find the back of the net, Either the ball sailed inches wide or inches over, or the Burbage keeper who was easily their man of the match saved it.

With 20 minutes gone a defensive lapse let in Burbage’s striker to grab the first goal of the game and put the visitors One nil up. Yet again the Lions continued to knock the ball about and kept possession but still could not find the final ball or a decent shot. We are asking the boys to play out from the back and use Harrison our keeper as the extra man which he is doing superbly. Just before half time though we conceded a second goal when a hopeful clearance from half way caught our keeper off his line and agonisingly rolled in to make the score Two nil to Burbage at Half time.

We felt at half time that even though we were two nil down that this game was still there for us to win. Unfortunately we lost Harrison in goal with a slight back strain, as it is only pre-season we didn’t want to risk him so Alex Murphy donned the gloves for the second half.

The second half started in much the same way as the first with the lions passing the ball around the difference this time was we found an and result, The first goal of the second half came from some great work by Kyle Rogers who then fed Harvey through with only the keeper to beat, there was only going to be one winner and Burbage’s lead was halved. The Lions heads lifted even more a few minutes later when after some great one touch football from Harvey, Kyle, Nash and Josh K the ball ended up nestling in the corner of the Burbage net with Josh K getting the final touch.

The Bedworth boys continued to dominate the half only allowing Burbage a few counter attacks which the defence snuffed out easily, the couple of times they were beaten Alex the stand in keeper was equal to anything thrown at him.

The Lions then took the lead with Kyle taking centre stage, beating two players and unleashing a shot from 20 yards out that the Burbage keeper only saw after it had gone past him into the back of the net to give Bedworth a deserved lead.

The game looked to be fizzling out at this stage with probably the correct result from the way the Lions had played but unfortunately a free kick was given on the edge of the Bedworth box and up stepped the Burbage number 8 who hit it top corner leaving Alex no chance.

Final result 3-3 All in all not a bad performance with some great interchanging of passing throughout the team. Defensively though we needed to be stronger and offensively take our chances when they come. We didn’t look as fit as we can be (But 13 year old boys on school holidays playing Fortnite all day and not seeing the outside world won’t be fit) Training will include a nice few fitness sessions to solve that problem. Saying that first game back with no training there were a lot of positives. Luke Stewart was given man of the match for his tireless work down the left hand side, giving us an outlet every time and causing trouble for Burbage every time he got the ball and showing great decision making on when to go alone or when to link up.

We look forward now to our next friendly on the 29th August against Mount Nod Jets away.

This week the Bedworth United u16s side had and inter squad friendly with Alan Tylers u15s team, both sides finishing 3rd in there respective leagues last year, both squads O O ROW BY have signed new players this preseason and entertained with a great game of football U TBALL CL last Sunday. The game was a very tight affair for the first 60 minutes and could of gone either way, however the u16s had more legs in the last 30 minutes most probably due to them being used to 45 minute halves. The result finished u16s 7 - 2 u15s which was an unfair score line for the u15s as they created many chances on goal but it wasn’t to be there day. The near future looks bright for Bedworth United as several players on show on Sunday displayed superb ability and will be names to look out for in the future. Both sides are looking to improve on there 3rd place finishes last season and we can all hope they can bring 2 league titles home between them this season.

Youth Team ease to victory…

A scrappy affair at Town Meadow saw United in the end run out winners, neither team W dominated in the early minutes but Bobby Robinson went close with a long range shot EG ST U ROW D B Y IN OO U that Hartshorn in the home goal had covered as it went over the bar, the same player TBALL CL having his shot easily saved moments later after hitting the target.

Scott and Ellis combined to create an opportunity for United midway through the half however the move broke down just inside the box.

Bedworth took a deserved lead after 26 minutes an Ellis corner was headed home by Robinson, the ball glancing off the underside of the bar and over the line.

RCW rarely offered a threat in forward areas, their busiest player was the strong pacey Beer but his powerful runs rarely produced an end product.

Skidmore was his usual busy self alongside a strong Robinson, but Bedworth could not convert a number of half chances, right on the stroke of half-time The Greenbacks got their second, a header from Luke Thompson fell to Frank Kenfack who calmly finished.

The second-half saw Bedworth have lots of possession without ever totally killing the game off, a rare shot from home side forward Nelson was easily saved by Jake Ball on 60 minutes.

Jack Booker came on for United and looked lively but the game saw no more goals despite the domination of the visitors, a victory on the night that really could have been more emphatic.

U21 Back in training…

The under 21’s started back to training at the start of July, and with so many of last W season squad having progressed on to semi pro clubs, it was clear Dave’s management EG T S U O O R O W B Y IN D L U team were going to have to completely rebuild from front to back. As the weeks passed TBALL C players were steadily added and vacant positions began to fill. Last years success certainly helped in attracting players and having had so many lads develop on the proof of what can happen was certainly there for any new recruits to see.

The u21’s first friendly was against Woodlands mens team. This proved to be a good opening test against a strong physical mens team, however the U21’s stuck to their game plan from last year of keeping the ball down and playing and as the game progressed on the new recruits started to settle very nicely and the Greenbacks ran out well deserved 3-0 winner.

Solihull U21’s provided the next test a week later and with confidence high from the previous week our new look 21’s were gelling quickly and ran out convincing 4-1 winners. A two week break as the recruitment phase continued before last Saturdays friendly against Lichfield City U21’s and with a number of the lads on holiday this looked like it would be a very tricky test against a team fielding many of the U18 team that finished runners up in the Floodlit youth league last season. However the greenbacks started very brightly and were very good value for their half time lead of 2-0. The Greenbacks suffered a few injuries during the friendly and finished the walking wounded with just 10 players but still managed to add another goal and make it 3-0. So the early signs are very promising for the forth coming season but the management know how tough the u21 league, but after so much change from last season the future still looks very bright.

The season begins next Saturday 1st September with the u21’s entertaining AFC Rushden and Diamonds.

Player sponsorship

The management team have also being work very hard off the field as they look to introduce a player sponsorship. The running costs for operating the U21’s is a lot more than most people would imagine with referee and linesman fees alone often coming in at around £120 a game, so to help fund the U21’s the management team have introduced player sponsors.

The Cost of Sponsoring a Player is £40 for the season and for that your name will be printed next to the player in every match day programme. Every time the player is mentioned on twitter the player sponsor will also be mentioned and we will also provide coverage on the club website.

Bedcroc will come out and visit each sponsor and have pictures taken which we will be added to the match day programme and thus provide even more coverage for the sponsor. We currently have 12 players sponsored players and are looking to add another 8 before our season starts on September 1st. If you are a small business or just a fan we would appreciate your support in sponsoring our U21 players. With the U21 playing Squad still being assembled we are not at a stage to announce which business will sponsor each player as yet, but this will be announced very shortly and in time for the next first team match programme.

Ladies development team hit nine

On Sunday 19th August our Development side were put to the test against Solihull Sporting Ladies from the Regional Women’s League- two divisions above the County W EG T S U O O R O W B Y IN D L U League that the ladies will play in this season. Bedworth started well with Foskett and TBALL C Collins looking dangerous at the top with early chances. Preston and Gummery utilised space in the wide areas well and Solihull’s defence were no match for the pacey young wingers. Bedworth looked calm on the ball and continued to work hard to break down an experienced Solihull side. The deadlock was finally broken in the 22nd minute as Foskett put in a brilliant ball for Collins to find the net. The goal made all the difference to the confidence of the Bedworth ladies as shortly after, debutant Beth Hope found herself with time and space on the edge of the box and rattled the crossbar. After a few changes, Sanders and Miller made an almost instant impact with Miller playing a through ball and Saunders just shooting wide. In the 40th minute Miller’s shot was parried away by the keeper but Jess Saunders followed up to slot home. Two minutes later substitute Jess Lundie went on a great run down the wing to gift the ball to Miller who made no mistakes with her finish. The side were really picking up confidence and pace with Bedworth winning the ball back from kick off and Jess Saunders getting her second of the afternoon. Just before the break for half time Miller continued to hassle and was rewarded with a well-deserved goal to add to her tally.

The teams were back out after half time with one change for Bedworth as Goalkeeper Eve Galt made way for Freeleigh Parnell. It didn’t take long for the Bedworth ladies to get back into the flow of things with Saunders on hand to finish her first senior hatrick. This was closely followed by another goal- this time Gilkes with the confident and composed finish. Solihull were left chasing our young side who were first to every ball and growing in confidence throughout. Lundie continued to be lively on the wing resulting in a calmly placed finished to make it 8-0. The final goal of the afternoon came from some great footwork from Tiarna Gilkes taking the ball around the defender and finishing with confidence to finish the score line at 9-0. A great boost for the newly formed development side who look to continue this momentum into the season.

FROM the Back of the Stand

a supporter’s eye view

We started our League season off two weeks ago when we played our first competitive game of the season by entertaining Needham Market here at The Oval and I’m sad to report that we didn’t start as we would have wished, because we conceded four goals without reply, which was very disappointing for all concerned, especially as we were so optimistic of doing well before the game. Never mind, the thought was that maybe we would do better when we went to St. Neots the following Tuesday. Once again it was very disappointing for us as we didn’t manage to accumulate any points losing 2-1, but as we were reminded it’s still early days and there’s an awful long way to go until the end of the season.

It seemed quite strange when we went into St. Neots ground because there were no match day programmes on sale, as along with several other clubs they now only produce a programme online, not a problem for those of us with computers but I’m sure there will be collectors of printed programmes who will be most disappointed.

The journey home turned out to be a bit of a trek as parts the A14 and M6 were closed and there were delays on the M1, seeing our team lose and the journey back taking much longer than it should, it certainly wasn’t our day.

This brings us to last Saturday when we went to Biggleswade, eventually arriving at the ground after a tour of the local countryside because the sat-nav told us we had arrived at our destination when we were actually overlooking the stadium from between junctions on the A1. We actually arrived in plenty of time before the Kick-Off, and hoping to see us get into winning ways we were highly delighted to see us go one up in the first minute, however we didn’t manage to score again and eventually had to settle for a draw as Biggleswade equalised late on.

Today we were originally scheduled to play a League game against Banbury United here at The Oval because Level three sides have always come into the FA Cup competition in the 1st Qualifying Round.

However due to the restructuring this afternoon we find ourselves playing Atherstone Town in the FA Cup preliminary Round. On the positive side the winners of today’s tie will get £2,890; and the losers £960, so if we’d have come into the next round as expected, and lost we wouldn’t get anything, because from the round after today it’s only the winners who get any prize money.

Last Season at this stage of the competition we entertained Haughmond FC here at The Oval, and found ourselves on the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline.

The team from the West Midlands Premier League thoroughly deserving their victory, and the result came as a big surprise to us, but let’s just say we didn’t play very well on the day and can have no complaints about the result.

How will we do this time around? Well, I’m sure we won’t be complacent, especially after last year; however “The Adders” must really fancy their chances against us especially after their emphatic 4-1 victory in their replay at Hanley Town in the last round. To say that our visitors today will be fired up must be something of an understatement because there are quite a few ex Greenbacks in their ranks who will surely come here with something to prove, however it’s up to us to go out there and show them that there’s a big gulf between the Leagues in which our respective clubs find themselves. That said, we all know that in a one off cup game anything can happen, so please, no upsets this afternoon.

George passed his refereeing course at the age of 14 so is now in his 7th season as a referee and 3rd season at level 4. George has already had an exciting refereeing career; refereeing an England Youth team at St George’s Park and representing the English FA in international competitions: the Dallas Cup and twice at the USA Cup in Minnesota. George is in the FA CORE programme for this season and has aspirations for promotion, ultimately into the professional game. Outside of refereeing George is an Audit Associate for global accounting firm KPMG, living in Nottingham and attending the University of Birmingham.
