For most of my life, I’ve been accused of being a talker. It is often said with judgment, and for far too long, it was something about myself that I apologized for, just another way I was too much for the world around me. As I evolved beyond caring what other people think, I began to understand that I’mactuallynotatalker;I’maconversationalist.

ThereistrulynothingIenjoymorethansinkingintoa real conversation, one that ebbs and flows and twists and turns from one subject to another and back again. To sit with an old friend or a new acquaintance and explore ideas with our words, to share thoughts in a way that helps us uncover our own truths, and to live vicariously through another human’s experience and perspective. To me, this is magic.

The problem is that, as a conversationalist, I’m part ofadyingbreed.

We live in a world that views communication as a transaction.Awaytogetsomethingfromsomebody - the next sale, a piece of information, a social advantage.Ourwordshavebecomedullandflabby.

We hop on a Zoom call, grateful to be able to multitask. We nod when our loved ones talk to us, pretending to listen while we scroll our social media feeds. We replace nuanced thought with silly memes We distract ourselves with superficial observations, always keeping it light. Polite discourse went out the window long ago, replaced with vitriol and divisiveness We even fill our days with the written equivalent of small talk: text messages,socialmediaposts,andemails

Therewasatimewhenconversationwasconsidered an art form (an era that I sometimes feel more connected with than our own!). When people savored conversation like a fine wine When words were used to express profound ideas, rich feelings, and interesting thoughts. There was a time when words were potent, when engaging in conversation was an act of sedition, a mechanism for redefining culture,andatrueformofartistry

TheartofconversationevolvedinFranceduringthe 17th and 18th centuries At the time, the French nobility was struggling through an identity crisis of epic proportions. No longer able to define their status in relation to war and the traits, values, and ethics of the warrior, nobles feared losing the very thing that separated them from the lower classes

On the other end of the spectrum, the monarchy hoped to take advantage of the uncertainty to suppressthepowerofthearistocracy.Enterasmall group of intelligent and curious women who turned to the power of words to subvert the monarchy and curateanewidentity.

Priortothattime,writtenandverbalcommunication was primarily transactional (with a goal to get) or rhetorical (with a goal to convince) The metamorphosis into art form occurred within the hallowed halls of the French Salon These gatherings, hosted by a succession of noblewomen, married elegance and decorum with intellectual curiosity and moral contemplation Nobles, writers, and thinkers of both genders gathered weekly in these rooms to engage in the exchange of ideas through discourse. The hostess, or Salonnière, established a code of conduct that became the gold standard, not only for how to engage in conversation, but also for how to exist in the world asapersonofnoblebearing

Once again, society is struggling with a massive identity crisis. A global pandemic, economic uncertainty,shiftingsocialnorms,theprevalenceof technology, environmental crisis, and political hostility, just to name a few, have left us feeling unmoored Whatdoesitmeantobehuman?Howdo we connect in this divisive age? How can we find moremeaning,happiness,andpurposeinourlives? Dowe,asindividuals,evenmatter?

I believe the answers to these questions lie in reclaimingconversationasanartformgovernedbya tacit agreement and adherence to a set of shared values A modern take on the traditional code of conduct I mentioned earlier. A forum for deepening ourcommunication,forengaginginactual#realtalk, andultimatelyforredefiningoursharedidentity

The values I present below are not dogma They are a starting point for a dialogue, for a very meta conversationaboutconversations.

Presence: Real conversations require attention on bothsidesofthetable Whetheryou’redistractedby your phone’s notifications, trying to parent while engaging with a friend, or running through your response while the other person is still talking, you aren’t present. An inability to be present in the conversation diminishes the value of the exchange and disrespects the other party. It is time to start beingintentionalinourdiscourseandcreatingspace tofullyengageinourconversations.

Collaboration: When we view conversation as a symbioticrelationshipinsteadofatransactionalsilo, we create a sacred space for co-creation Historically, conversation was considered a joint endeavor in which meaning is made through collaboration. It is the give and take of the shared exchange, the mutual respect and willingness to learn from one another that gives conversation its power.

Harmony: Conversation becomes harmonious when the parties engaged see themselves in each other. Thisbreedsthecollaborationsocentraltorelational conversation. Interestingly, harmony requires difference; it doesn’t exist in uniformity but in diversity. So it is up to us to bring our different opinions into conversation and exercise a true politeness and curiosity to discuss those differing perspectives. Let’s remove ourselves from the echo chambers and engage in an exploration of different opinionswithoutcompromisingharmony.

Generosity: Imagine your words were a currency They would be a truly unlimited resource. We each have the opportunity to give the gift of our words and to receive this verbal gift from others in return. Thisconstantcircleofexchange,ofgiftandreceipt, is our right, and I would argue, our responsibility. Conversation gets to be a space of mutual generosityandbalancedreciprocity

Depth: It almost goes without saying but superficial wordsdonotconstituteconversation.Wehavetobe willing to go deep, to traverse beyond the realm of people we know, current events, and the weather, and use the power of our words to express our thoughts, our ideas, our feelings When we’ve leaned into these other values, we create a safe space for others to go deep and get real. We aren’t making assumptions, pointing fingers, or shutting down.Westayopenandreceptive,curiousandkind.

I believe conversation is the mechanism by which we reinforce the interconnected nature of our humanity.Ibelieveitishowwewakeupfromourdormancy,fromthenumbingdullnessofsmalltalkand the boredom so many of us feel in our daily lives This is how we reconcile with the diversity of human experience and begin to learn instead of judge. I have a fear of this being it. That at some point all of this beauty I have built and created in my life will start to fall away.

It is real for me.

I am working diligently on quieting this limiting belief and yet I am realizing it is not going to necessarily go away. Fear doesn’t go away. Scarcity doesn’t go away It’s just the way we move through it that makes the world of difference

I had a bit of a moment with myself before this year started because I didn’t see what was next. It felt like an abyss. I know that mentorship, my boutique agency, the podcast and this magazine are aligned and correct for me There is nothing that I do that I don’t love. But I couldn’t envision what 2023 may hold for me. There was an underlying hum of “what if this all falls apart”

As I spent more time away from the to-do list and in solitude, I realized I am just getting started and the call is to deepen everything rather than continue to add to the list of services As a manifesting generator, this is what was causing some of the discomfort because we are not short of brilliant ideas. I am committing to a posture of steadiness that I am being asked to hold

ntis Bahamas will forever be my favorite place to tion Some of my biggest and fondest memories been made there.

unparalleled beaches with perfect white sand and tal clear waters match the hospitality of everyone meet This resort holds the place of being my first tion as a Mom, my first vacation as a single Mom, rst vacation with my Mom, my first vacation as a of four, my first vacation with my two younger kids my husband’s fortieth birthday.

hese precious memories and many more took place is iconic resort You can clearly see how my heart soul will always be connected to this place. I do a vision of owning an income property there in 2023 Stay tuned

POOLS & WATERPARK

I have always said that this resort offers more than Disneyland for families as well as an escape with luxury for an adult only getaway. The waterslides serve every age. The lazy (not-so-lazy) river and plethora of pools offer a variety of experiences that make every day unique.

All of my kids learned to swim from the children’s slide at the Grotto pool and felt their first sense of independence as they climbed up the stairs and safely made their way down the slide to meet us at the bottom. My heart melts just thinking about it They all share this memory although on different trips with me.

THE POOLS & WATERPARK

Of course, the Leap of Faith is one that I have done several times because it forces me to face and overcome fear each time. The slide itself offers a free enema if you’re interested and can clearly see as each person stands up at the bottom to pick their bathing suit out of their rear ends. It all happens so fast but working the nerve up to take the leap takes me a long time I can’t help but laugh as the kids push their way around me to eagerly go as I stand there frozen wondering if I am leaping to my fate It is a great reminder of how as adults we lose a lot of the freedoms to explore and try different things because of our fears.

With the risk of being judged as parents, the Serpent Slide is another family favorite with a funny story. Our youngest was making his last trip down before we were heading home It was his favorite slide and he and his sister must have gone up and down a hundred times My husband was holding the tube to wait for the go ahead and as he let go, the tube turned and my son was going down backwards. They aren’t suppose to go backwards. I will never forget his face or my husband’s My husband was fully prepared to dive down this slide to rescue him but the lifeguard kept us all under control We laugh about it now but he was not a happy camper after that so we will need to make another family vacation soon for a redo

In 2021, I took my two youngest children for two weeks We decided to start with a tube ride to warm ourselves up to the more challenging slides. My husband chose The Surge. I mean the name should have said enough but it wasn’t until we were on the conveyor belt without a way to escape and our kids screaming at us to get them off that we realized we may be causing a mini trauma for them They cried and screamed the whole way down. We as adults did too. Well, for me it’s always that inappropriate nervous laugh. Once at the bottom, we made eyes and they laughed and laughed and developed a pride in themselves for what they had done We didn’t do it again but they overcame fear in real time and it’s a story we continue to tell to reminisce.

FOOD & DRINK

Although Atlantis offers meal plans, we always choose to do our own thing There are ways of saving money as a family like staying at The Reef or Harborside where the rooms have kitchens. We do that when we are with our kids

Another family tip is to take the kids to the buffet at Poseidon for an early dinner and let them fill up and have fun picking their food and then go to a nicer restaurant afterwards for more elevated options for you as the adults.

FOOD & DRINK

As adults, if you enjoy cocktails, we love to go to the grocery store and buy our wine and spirits to have with us rather than buying them at dinner or to watch the sunset. It is honestly the best way to save if you like to have a drink or two

Fish by José Andrés is our favorite place. The martinis are perfectly created and the seafood is some of the best I have ever had. It is just an incredible restaurant and a must while staying there.

Olives is also one of our top restaurants The outdoor patio overlooks the most luxurious yachts while you eat some incredible Italian cuisine. Again, the scallops are amazing and love to share a charcuterie board It is delicio and the atmosphere is special to Atlantis Bahamas.

Walk the Harborside for other great restaura

You will find Ben and Jerry’s ice cream and a great pizza place so you can take a whole piz to the beach with your bottle of wine and wa the sunset

I have only ever had one poor experience and that was at the Chinese restaurant but I sup we can’t be surprised when we are in the Caribbean. I don’t recommend trying it becau there are so many other options and you will likely want to go back to Fish or Olives for a second time before you leave because of ho spectacular they are

CREATING YOUR EXPERIENCE

The Cove beach is arguably one of the nicest beaches in the world and I have been to many. I can’t put into words how crystal clear, warm, calm the water is and how welcoming the five miles of white sand beaches are. The ocean is shallow for quite a ways in so you can relax as your kids splash. and you can float and soak in the therapeutic ocean water for as long as you can take the sun Don’t be surprised by the small stingrays and fish who often are spotted. I recommend getting up early and walking the beach or going for a run along the endless paths with “vibey” music to accompany you Once you are back, order coffee to your room and sit on your ocean front balcony sipping your coffee and planning your day

The Cove pool is exclusive to those who are staying there and is for adults only. I loved this upscale and luxe option on our recent stay with my husband and the members of the Icons Mastermind. The cabanas are all about luxury with both beach and pool views You have to reserve them early and as long as you are ready to splurge for the day, I highly encourage you to enjoy the shade, the views, the service and the day of sitting in a magical place

The pool chairs are a hot commodity especially the ones at the Grotto pool or at the kids’ splash pad for obvious reasons. The waterpark opens at 10am However most people have their spot claimed before then. There are servers who will bring you food and drinks throughout the day so you can put your feet up or run around and play with a home base for the day.

CREATING YOUR EXPERIENCE

Of course The Dig, the lagoons and the larger than life aquarium will take your breath away. The manta rays are so majestic as they glide towards you as you look through the glass and you realize how miraculous nature and life really is. If you have tired kids or you are looking for something to do out of the sun, you can watch the constant activity in the aquarium for a long time and be immersed in the ocean world

At night, they have outdoor movies for the kids with popcorn they can enjoy as they wade in the pool and watch their favorite classics I always wonder what it must be like for them. The bigness of the towers all around them, the moon above and the privilege of swimming at night in a pool while watching a movie. Wouldn’t that have been magical to experience? We loved living vicariously through them as we watched their faces filled with joy.

If you are travelling without kids, the night clubs are so much fun to dance the night away or enjoy the lounge where you can sit and people watch while sipping a beautifully curated cocktail The options are endless and I have never had the same experience twice vacationing there.

THE TRIP TO START IT ALL

My trip in 2021 was a catalyst trip for me for several reasons. Firstly, when I arrived the concierge was astonished that I was staying for two weeks. I realized in that moment what I have been able to create for my family. I was able to pay cash to take my family to a very high end resort for two weeks and build a memory. My “why” has always been to create as many memory making moments as possible in my lifetime. I felt myself anchor into this very reality that I had worked so hard to create. I really acknowledged myself and what I am providing for my family. I felt my heart, mind and lungs expand I was doing it I was experiencing it. I was utterly fulfilled.

The other big moment I had during this same trip, was during a run one morning where I stopped to rest and watch the ocean. With the gorgeous towers behind me, the sun dancing off of the water, enjoying the way the breeze hit my skin and embracing the feelings I experience when I am here, I clearly heard the call to host a retreat in 2022 I felt the deepest desire to support other women to experience this in their own way and to understand that luxury and beauty is readily available. I envisioned taking them on a trip that they may never take for themselves. I wanted to share it and leave women changed as a result of my willingness to provide, host and plan a perfect retreat I made that come to reality in December of 2022 and I am proud of that. I did it. We did it It is one of the most imprinted memories I have ever made in my lifetime and at this resort that is so special to me and my family.

I have often heard you say, “sequins are a strategy”. What do you mean when you say this?

Oh, how I love sequins! And I love that we are starting here because I believe you can't play small in sequins When you make a choice to wear sequin, it's a strategy because people can't help but notice it, which means they can't help but notice you. So if you want to stand out, be remembered, make a statement, raise your vibe, and walk interesting conversations and/or people right up to you … sequin is the strategy.

Personally, I have always had a love affair with all things that sparkle. I remember walking into a bébé (omg, remember that store?!) and buying a pair of pants with rhinestone tigers all over them, which I immediately decided was the "perfect outfit” for a wedding shower when I was 25 years old Can you even?! And not long after that, I bought my first official sequin jacket, which I still have to this day, and I will never forget how it felt to put on that jacket and step out into something bigger and bolder for myself

The night I wore that jacket, I was stopped multiple times by people telling me how much they loved the jacket, but I also walked the most incredible people and conversations right up to me all because of that choice. From that moment forward, I knew that every time I wore sequins, I gave myself this incredible opportunity to make a statement without saying a word That strategy has proven to be one of my secret weapons over the years. Of course, I love how I feel in sequins, but I love even more that every time I wear it, another woman has permission to wear it for herself because we cannot be what we don't see This means that the brighter you shine brighter other women can too.

What do you commonly see as a behavior when someone is playing small?

Feeling like an imposter. Worrying about what others will think. Swimming in selfdoubt Overthinking everything A lack of boundaries. Constantly asking for permission. Apologizing for everything And the worst, waiting for … “someday”.

I recently finished a book on leadership, and it closed with a story about a dream the main character had where his Dad, who had passed away and was a complete workaholic while he was living, came to him with a message

The dream conversation went like this: "Hey, Dad, what was it like after you got the diagnosis? What did it feel like to know you were dying?"

To which his Dad said: "What does it feel like to pretend that you're not "

You can't unread that line, yet so many of us walk around life like overworked, overscheduled, overfed, and overstimulated zombies thinking we have time. So we say we'll get to it tomorrow or that next year will finally be the year.

"You can always make more money, but you can't make more time, and if there's one thing I know for sure, what's worse than the temporary pain of discomfort is the avoidable pain of regret. And we end up with regret by playing small and not becoming the iconic woman, leader, mother, wife, or person we were born to be. "

How does a woman awaken the beast within?

It starts by giving yourself the permission to transform One of the most powerful questions you can ask yourself is, “who do I have to become to get what I want?” because what got you here won't get you there So, this means you'll have to confront the parts of you that aren't coming with you

The Truth: You can have anything you want, but it will cost you the person you are now

This is scary for most of us because we fear what we can't see. Change is hard! So a great place to start if you want to awaken the beast within is to start experimenting with your fear. Besides wearing sequins, one of my secret weapons over the years is experimenting with my fear every day on purpose It is how I have increased my tolerance for pain over the years, which helps me live a braver life and avoid regret.

The most important question I ask myself every morning is, where am I playing it too safe? Or, said another way, how can I get uncomfortable today?

I call these my daily #exFEARiments, a commitment to picking up the weight of discomfort to get more comfortable in uncomfortable places. Daily #exFEARiments could look like this:

Sitting in the front row at a meeting, asking the first question, posting a selfie to social media, unfollowing someone toxic, making a sales call, setting a boundary, trying new food, listening to new music, picking up the phone instead of sending a text, going on camera, asking someone new to lunch, eating dinner alone.

All these choices are you working your courage muscle, and the stronger this muscle gets, the higher your “tolerance for pain” (i e , fear, failure, risk, disappointment) becomes. As a result, you will start to take more risks, you'll connect more powerfully, and more profitably, you will ask for what you want, you'll take more confident action, you'll kick open new doors, and my favorite other people will notice, which makes your courage very very contagious!

g g showed me it was possible to do so myself. No, as a grown woman myself, I feel it's my calling to shine as bright as possible so that other women and the little girls they raise feel confident to do the same for themselves.

Listen, life is gonna throw us curveballs, and things aren't going to be perfect. Perfect doesn’t exist We will lose people we love and face despair, diagnosis, and loss. We have to pay our taxes, and we will have to deal with difficult people All these things cannot be avoided, but we get to choose our response. We get to choose what happens next And we get to choose whether we are the victim or the victor

You have had such incredible success Judi in life and business. How do you keep yourself excited and passionate for more?

Because I'm in competition with no one else but myself and define success as freedom. The freedom to do work I love, the way I want, with people who rock. If I can wake up every day and do that, I am living my dream

I keep myself excited and passionate for more by guarding my focus and protecting my mental wealth.

Guarding my focus looks like setting healthy boundaries with people, technology, social media, and the like is critical to keeping my energy levels high. If there is one thing fear hates, it's when you're focused because when you're focused you're really hard to stop. So guarding your focus is a powerful way to keep fear at bay. See, fear has one job and one job only to stop you… This is powerful to understand because it means you also have the antidote, movement. So the ultimate goal of guarding your focus is to keep your eyes on your own paper and keep your head moving down your own path Be inspired but don't be distracted because distraction births doubt.

As for protecting my mental wealth, this looks like a weekly commitment to scheduling workouts, priorities, time for fun, lots of reading, and time in nature. These things make me a better writer, entrepreneur, woman, and leader

I am blessed to say that I have traveled a lot and all over the world. What a gift it has been to experience the world and explore new places. When I was doing a lot of motivational speaking, there were years where I travelled over twice a month. You become really savvy with the way you prepare and pack and you also form a higher standard for yourself and the experience of travelling to support yourself.

USE POINTS

Use a credit card that offers travel points at all times for your business. You will fly for free as well as generate many perks that you can use while you travel.

THREE/ USE PLASTIC PROTECTORS

Use the plastic protectors you get from the dry cleaners to prevent wrinkles on your clothes. If you individually put each wrinkle prone item within one of these protectors, you won’t have many wrinkles on your clothes when you arrive.

PLAN AHEAD

Plan each of your outfits and label them on a clothing rack to pack. I plan an outfit for every event to prevent over packing I do take one extra outfit in case I change my mind.

DIFFUSE OILS

I take my mini diffuser and my favorite essential oils for my room to create a sense of home through the smell. It helps to ground you.

As often as you can, go early to the airport to prevent stress and then use the lounge (you can pay to enter any lounge) to nourish yourself with better quality food and drink before flying.

Drinking tomato juice on a long flight (although high in sodium) will help prevent blood clots.

I never sleep without my Happy Ears ear plugs They will prevent an interrupted sleep from any noise within the hotel.

Be sure to take a large bottle of water on the flight because the cups they provide for water on the plane are too small to keep you properly hydrated.

Living out of a suitcase is not natural. Hang your clothes and use the drawers to store your belongings to create more anchoring.
