By Mickey Tortorelli
In the contemporary beauty industry, where trends shift rapidly and consumer expectations soar, mere general knowledge is no longer sufficient for success. Specialization has emerged as a critical differentiator, a necessity rather than an option.
Today’s clientele seeks Beauty Advisors who possess a profound understanding of specific beauty aspects, whether it’s skincare science, advanced makeup artistry, or the intricacies of hair care.
To maintain their competitive edge and establish customer trust, beauty brands must ensure Beauty Advisors possess in-depth knowledge of the entire product line. This necessitates comprehensive training programs covering ingredients, benefits, and application techniques.
Expert advisors can provide personalized recommendations, address customer concerns effectively, and foster longterm loyalty. Moreover, this expertise extends beyond mere product details to encompass industry trends, competitive products, and the brand’s overarching philosophy.
Equipping advisors with such proficiency elevates the customer experience, enhances brand reputation, and drives sales growth. Similarly, retailers striving to provide a curated and expert shopping experience, recognize the value of well-trained and knowledgeable beauty advisors.
This landscape elevates the importance of formal certifications. Obtaining a reputable certification, such as the highly regarded Certified Beauty Advisor (CBA) designation, signifies more than just completing a course. It represents a deliberate and substantial investment in professional development.
Through rigorous training and assessment, certificate programs enhance technical skills, broaden industry knowledge, and instill best practices. The pursuit of certification also speaks volumes about an individual’s dedication and ambition.
It communicates a clear message to peers, potential clients, and employers: this is an individual who takes their profession seriously, who is committed to maintaining high standards, and who is poised to contribute meaningfully to the beauty industry. A certification, thus, becomes a powerful credential, unlocking opportunities for career advancement, increased earning potential, and recognition as a leading authority within the beauty sector.
The Retail Beauty Advisor Certification Program® (RBCP)
The RBCP is a ‘first-of-its-kind’ digital training designed specifically for retail beauty professionals. Comprised of eight comprehensive courses—covering skincare, makeup, fragrance, sun care, nail care, hair colour & care, customer service, and business building—it culminates in the CBA designation once all modules are completed. Developed by beauty industry experts, it’s both interactive and practical— ensuring you don’t just learn, you apply.
The beauty world is saturated with information—brands, blogs, social media. As a CBAcertified advisor, you **cut through the noise**. You’re not guessing—you’re educating. This earns customer trust, increases loyalty, and positions you as the go-to expert in-store.
This structured learning roadmap guides you from onboarding to leadership. Whether you aspire to be a specialist, trainer, or manager, the RBCP builds the skills and credentials to support your advancement.
Customers reward expertise with loyalty—79% are more comfortable purchasing from an advisor who proves their knowledge. Retailers see certified advisors as driving higher sales, fewer returns, stronger customer recommendations, and reduced turnover.
‘My RBCP training is a constant asset in my role, providing me with a strong foundation of product knowledge and customer service best practices.”
Hannah Clausen, CBA, Beauty Specialist, Shoppers Drug Mart, Nova Scotia

Meet Fabrizia Prater, Regional Territory Manager at NEOSTRATA® Canada.
Fabrizia Prater’s career in the beauty industry spans nearly 30 years, beginning at Shoppers Drug Mart where she advanced from Beauty Advisor to Cosmetic Manager.
After a rewarding shift into Real Estate, Fabrizia returned to the beauty industry 11 years ago as an Account Executive with NEOSTRATA®. In 2021, she embraced the role of Regional Territory Manager, bringing her experience, creativity, and resilience together.
Fabrizia’s journey is a testament to the power of trusting yourself and adapting to change, particularly during a pivotal transition at NEOSTRATA®
She attributes much of her success to strong mentorship, continuous learning, and a passion for helping others grow, especially beauty advisors.
Can you share your journey into the beauty industry and what led you to your current role as a Regional Territory Manager?
My journey began nearly 30 years ago at Shoppers Drug Mart, where I progressed from a Beauty Advisor to a Cosmetic Manager. After many rewarding years, I transitioned into Real Estate. I found myself missing the creativity of the beauty industry, and that passion led me back. Eleven years ago, I joined NEOSTRATA® as an Account Executive, and in 2021, I was proud to take on the role of Regional Territory Manager, using all of my talents within one role.
What were some pivotal moments or turning points in your career that helped you grow both personally and professionally?
A pivotal moment in my career happened while NEOSTRATA® was going through an ownership transition. Though these transitions can be great in the long term, it made me question whether my performance would meet the new company’s expectations. It was a turning point that pushed me to stay positive and remain creative. It taught me resilience and the importance of trusting myself and my abilities.
How did your experience in retail or frontline beauty roles prepare you for a Regional Territory Manager position?
Working with passionate and intelligent managers was key in preparing me for the role of Regional Territory Manager. I learned the importance of listening carefully to the challenges my managers faced and responding with thoughtful problem-solving solutions.
What core skills do you believe are essential for success as a Regional Territory Manager in the cosmetics industry?
To be successful, there are a few core skills: Be a good listener, especially when it comes to understanding the challenges others are facing. Being organized is imperative to staying on top of many priorities. It’s important to be personable, build strong relationships, and have strong negotiation skills for a win-win closing, which has been key.
How do you continue to grow and develop these skills in your current role?
I regularly ask for feedback from my stores and team members. I’ll often ask if there’s anything more I can do to support

them. Their feedback gives me ideas on where I can improve. I take advantage of my time on the road by listening to podcasts that inspire new ideas and help me grow.
Can you share your journey into the beauty industry and what led you to your current role as a Regional Territory Manager?
What advice would you give to beauty advisors who aspire to move into account management or corporate beauty roles?

Be passionate about what you do! Take advantage of education courses offered. If there’s a specific area you are interested in, explore it. Take a real interest in the business side of beauty, where the numbers are produced. Seek feedback and reflect. Find a mentor to inspire you!
Were there any mentors, courses, or certifications that significantly impacted your career development?

How does your role as a Regional Territory Manager support beauty advisors in stores and contribute to their success?
Working with passionate and intelligent managers was key in preparing me for the role of Regional Territory Manager. I learned the importance of listening carefully to the challenges my managers faced and responding with thoughtful problem-solving solutions.
What core skills do you believe are essential for success as a Regional Territory Manager in the cosmetics industry?
I support beauty advisors by sharing successful event ideas I’ve seen in other locations and by sharing creative concepts. I tweak these ideas to the store’s demographic and store volume. I help plan and execute these events. In stores, I enjoy training beauty advisors on new product launches, key products, and selling strategies.
What inspires you most about working in the beauty industry?
To be successful, there are a few core skills: Be a good listener, especially when it comes to understanding the challenges others are facing. Being organized is imperative to staying on top of many priorities. It’s important to be personable, build strong relationships, and have strong negotiation skills for a win-win closing, which has been key.
What inspires me most is the opportunity to make people feel good about themselves. It is very fulfilling to help someone feel confident; it’s a precious gift. Knowing I can make a positive impact inspires me every day.

It was a turning point that pushed me to stay positive and remain creative. It taught me resilience and the importance of trusting myself and my abilities.
How did your experience in retail or frontline beauty roles prepare you for a Regional Territory Manager position?
I’ve always had a curious mind and a strong desire to learn. Throughout my career, I have taken different courses to help me grow as a person. But more than courses or certifications, the person who has had the biggest impact on my career is Patricia Clare, the National Training Manager with NEOSTRATA®. I still remember hearing Patricia speak for the first time at a sales meeting. She was presenting product information, but the way she delivered her message was informative, full of enthusiasm, and with such warmth. I left that meeting inspired, motivated, and ready to be the best version of myself. That moment stayed with me forever.
How do you continue to grow and develop these skills in your current role?
Looking back, what’s one piece of advice you wish you received earlier in your career?
I regularly ask for feedback from my stores and team members. I’ll often ask if there’s anything more I can do to support them. Their feedback gives me ideas on where I can improve. I take advantage of my time on the road by listening to podcasts that inspire new ideas and help me grow.
The one piece of advice I wish I had received earlier is: Don’t be afraid… take a chance, believe in yourself, and just do it! It’s okay to make mistakes; that’s how we learn and grow. I spent too much time second-guessing myself when what I really needed was the confidence to trust my instincts. Continue to be curious… that is the best way to learn new skills.
What advice would you give to beauty advisors who aspire to move into
By Mickey Tortorelli
isn’t just about skills—it’s about who you connect with along the way.
Whether you’re just starting out or deepening your career, finding a trusted mentor and surrounding yourself with a supportive network can be one of the most powerful tools for professional and personal development.
Mentorship provides a bridge between experience and aspiration.
A great mentor shares their knowledge, offers honest feedback, and helps you navigate challenges that might otherwise feel overwhelming. Whether it’s learning how to approach a difficult customer, mastering the latest ingredient trends, or planning your next career move, mentors can accelerate your growth and help you avoid common missteps.
Networking, too, is more than collecting contacts. It’s about building genuine relationships with those who understand the realities of the retail beauty floor, the joy of helping a client find their confidence, and the pressures of hitting sales goals.
When you “find your people,” you create a space to exchange ideas, celebrate wins, and stay inspired.
So how do you get started?
Begin by seeking out others who inspire you—whether it’s a seasoned colleague in your store, a trainer you admire, a brand account executive, or someone you’ve met through industry events or social media.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions, express your goals, and be open to learning. Likewise, offer support and encouragement to those coming up behind you. You never know when you might become someone’s mentor.
If your store offers mentorship programs or regional networking events, participate. And if they don’t—why not take the lead in starting one?
Being proactive in building your professional community not only enhances your reputation, it positions you as a leader.
Mentorship fuels confidence and career growth—learning from others’ experiences can fast-track your development.
Networking provides emotional and professional support—especially when navigating industry changes and daily challenges.
Connection builds community—creating a culture of learning, encouragement, and opportunity.
Your journey in beauty doesn’t have to be a solo one. With the right mentors and a strong network, you’ll find guidance, resilience, and motivation to thrive. So reach out, stay curious, and surround yourself with people who want to see you shine. Because in beauty—and in life— connection is everything.

Why mastering these key skills is essential for every Beauty Advisor
As today’s beauty customer becomes more informed and digitally connected, the role of the Beauty Advisor continues to evolve — from salesperson to educator, confidante, and trusted guide. To thrive in this changing landscape, you need more than product knowledge; you need a full toolbox of soft and technical skills that elevate the customer experience.
Here are the ‘top five skills’ — ranked in order of importance — that will set you apart in today’s beauty retail environment, with real-life examples of how to bring each one to life on the sales floor:
Why it matters: Trust and rapport drive loyalty. When a customer feels heard, seen, and understood, they’re more likely to buy—and come back.
How to master it: Use active listening, ask insightful, open-ended questions, and customize your suggestions to precisely address the genuine requirements of your customer.
For Example:
“You mentioned your skin feels tight after cleansing — that tells me your skin’s barrier might be compromised by the foaming cleanser you’re currently using. Let me show you a milky cleanser and a ceramide-rich moisturizer to help rebuild your skin hydration.”
This shows empathy, problem-solving, and personalized consultation.
Why it matters: Customers are reading ingredient lists. Beauty Advisors who can explain what’s in a product — and why it works — build instant credibility.
How to master it: Know your ingredient families, such as acids, anti-oxidants, retinoids, ceramides, peptides and sunscreens. Be prepared to explain their function in simple, relatable language.
For Example:
“This serum contains niacinamide, which helps reduce redness and strengthens the skin barrier. It’s a great option for brightening and improving your skin tone.”
Clear, benefit-focused education helps close the sale while empowering the customer.
Why it matters: Customers rarely use products in isolation. Beauty Advisors who can build a complete beauty regimen across skincare, makeup, and fragrance increase basket size and customer satisfaction.
How to master it: Look for natural transitions in conversation and think holistically about the customer’s needs.
For Example:
“Now that we’ve found the perfect foundation match, I’d love to show you a setting spray that will lock it in while adding hydration — especially great for long days or summer weather.”
This positions you as a solutions expert.
Why it matters: Technology is now part of the beauty journey. From shade-matching apps to QR codes and e-learning portals, being techsavvy helps you stay relevant and efficient.
How to master it: Embrace digital tools provided by your store or brand. Practice until you feel comfortable guiding customers through them.
For Example:
“Let me show you our digital skincare diagnostic tool — it scans your skin’s hydration and helps build a customized routine. We can email the results to you as well!”
This blends tech with high-touch service, adding value to the consultation.
Why it matters: Reading the room, managing different personalities, and staying calm under pressure are invaluable traits in retail beauty.
How to master it: Observe non-verbal cues, adjust your tone and pace, and manage your own emotions during high-stress moments.
For Example:
“It sounds like you’ve had a tough time with previous products. Let’s start with a gentle routine and just one or two items — I want you to feel comfortable and in control of your skin journey.”
This builds trust by acknowledging the customer’s emotional state and tailoring your approach accordingly.
These five skills aren’t trends — they’re the foundation of every successful beauty career. Whether you’re looking to grow in your current role or take the next step, focusing on these areas will help you evolve as a professional, empower your customers, and excel in your career journey.
Mastering communication creates deeper customer trust and stronger sales.
Ingredient fluency positions you as an expert in your field.
Cross-category selling allows you to create tailored, complete solutions.
Digital confidence keeps your services relevant and modern.
Emotional intelligence makes you indispensable in a customer-first industry.

As a Beauty Advisor, you’re a trusted expert for your clients, but stepping into leadership means expanding your impact. It’s the opportunity to guide others, foster growth, and set the tone for success on your team.
Moving into a leadership role within the beauty industry takes more than just experience. It requires a combination of skills, such as mindset, self-awareness, adaptability, and developing the right capabilities to lead with intention.
Let’s dive into what it takes to make this transition and grow into management with purpose.
To step into a leadership role, you need to be equipped with more than just product knowledge.
Successful leaders know how to listen, coach, and motivate. Strong communication, empathy, resilience, and emotional intelligence are at the heart of effective leadership. These skills are crucial for building relationships not only with customers, but with team members too.
Rayelyn Izzo, Beauty Manager at Shoppers Drug Mart (Calgary), shares:
“Customer service is the fundamental, critical skill that you must possess to succeed in the beauty industry. If you master the art of people, you are winning.”
To lead well, you also need to be a skilled problem solver who is comfortable with uncertainty, open to feedback, and ready to adapt when the unexpected happens. As Grace Lee, International Makeup Artist, puts it:
“Being positive and fearless is critical to lead any team. Willingness to pivot and try new things showed me that there is never any failure as long as you try your best.”
As a Beauty Advisor, you build trust by actively listening to your customers and providing personalized recommendations. In leadership, that same trust must be cultivated with your team.
Leadership involves mentoring and coaching others. Emma Dans, Sales & Education Specialist at Groupe Marcelle Cosmetics, advises:
“Love people first. Products matter, but relationships drive success.”
Cultivating strong relationships within your team is key to motivating and supporting them toward success.
Leadership is also about letting go of doing everything yourself. Delegating effectively and giving your team room to grow builds confidence and trust.
As Patricia Clare, National Training Manager at NEOSTRATA® Canada, reminds us:
“Stay current, read, explore, try, and if all else fails…laugh and try it all again in a new way.”
Being a leader doesn’t mean knowing everything; it means creating space for curiosity, collaboration, and shared success. Confidence in your team’s abilities, coupled with a willingness to learn and adapt, will make you an effective leader.
Voices from the Field: Real Talk on Growth
The transition into leadership rarely follows a straight path. It’s a journey of learning, resilience, and opportunities to evolve.
Lori Patrick, Beauty Manager at Shoppers Drug Mart (Newfoundland), offers this advice:
“You’ve got to keep your eyes wide open, your heels planted, and your game face on.”
Leadership is about continuously evolving, staying engaged with your team, and fostering a positive, empowering work environment.
Key Takeaways
Adaptability and Resilience
Leadership starts with people. Invest time in understanding, guiding, and supporting your team.
Be open to change and embrace challenges. Whether leading a team or facing new trends, resilience is a vital leadership trait.
Empower Others
Great leaders don’t just perform - they develop others. Share your knowledge, celebrate wins, and build a team that thrives.

In today’s fast-paced beauty retail environment, customers expect more than just product recommendations, they are looking for expert advice that feels personal.
The key to building trust, loyalty, and increasing sales lies in the quality of your consultations. When done right, consultations can transform a onetime shopper into a loyal customer.
A consultation is more than just suggesting products, it’s about building a connection with your customer by understanding their needs, concerns, and goals.
When you take the time to ask the right questions, listen actively, and personalize your advice, you position yourself as a knowledgeable, trustworthy expert in skincare, makeup, and other beauty areas. This will build trust with customers and encourage them to return for more of your personalized service.
On the flip side, a quick, transactional approach, where you simply point out products without engaging in a conversation, misses the opportunity to build trust.
Today’s beauty customers want a tailored experience, not a generic suggestion. That’s why mastering consultations is key to your success.
Picture this, a customer walks into your store, unsure of which skincare product to choose. Instead of immediately jumping straight into a recommendation or pointing to a product on the shelf, take the time to ask open-ended questions like:
“What concerns do you have about your current skincare routine?”
“Are you looking for something to address dryness, fine lines, or something else?”
By asking thoughtful questions and actively listening, you can tailor your advice, creating an experience that feels intentional, personal, and valuable.
Once you’ve gathered enough insight, offer solutions that directly address their concerns. For example, if a customer is concerned about dry skin, suggest a hydrating moisturizer, and take it a step further by also suggesting a rich body cream to complement it.
This approach not only meets their needs, but it will also “enrich” the consultation by suggesting complementary products that offer added value. This not only helps the customer but also increases your sales.
The secret to closing a sale? Confidence and education. Your recommendations should highlight the benefits clearly and relate directly to the customer’s unique needs.
For instance, after recommending a moisturizer, you could say:
“This moisturizer will keep your skin hydrated and smooth all day long. It’s perfect for your needs, and with the eye cream, you’ll also target fine lines around your eyes.”
By focusing on the customer’s needs and explaining the benefits of each product, you’re helping them envision the result and guiding them towards a purchase, all while building trust.
Show your customer how each item fits into their routine and supports their goals. Instead of simply asking, “Would you like to buy it?” inspire confidence:
“With the right products tailored for your needs, your skin will feel revitalized, and you’ll see visible improvements. This combination will give you the results you’ve been looking for.”
Even if the customer doesn’t purchase everything at that moment, don’t be discouraged. By educating them about how the products will benefit them, you’ve positioned yourself as a trusted advisor, increasing the likelihood of future purchases.
Ask open-ended questions to understand your customer’s needs, and create a customized experience they will remember.
Once the customer agrees to one product, suggest complementary items that will enhance their beauty routine and deliver greater value.
Explain the benefits clearly, tie them to the customer’s goals, and speak with confidence. You’re not just selling—you’re empowering!

In today’s ever-evolving beauty industry change is not just constant—it’s accelerating.
From viral trends on social media to shifts in consumer expectations, the rise of AI-driven personalization, and unpredictable staffing patterns in-store, it can feel overwhelming to keep up.
But with the right mindset tools, beauty advisors can transform pressure into power—and uncertainty into opportunity.
Your role isn’t just to sell— it’s to guide, educate, and enhance their confidence in their choices.
Let’s start with social media.
Platforms like TikTok and Instagram are driving product discovery and shaping how clients shop.
While it can feel hard to compete with influencers or instant online access, beauty advisors hold something unique: human connection.
By learning the trends and using them to spark authentic, personalized conversations, you become the expert clients trust beyond the screen. Even better, social media doesn’t have to be a competitor—it can be a tool.
Learning how to leverage platforms like Instagram Reels or TikTok tutorials can help you grow your personal client base, drive traffic to your counter, and build lasting relationships beyond the store.
For practical tips on how to get started, check out our editorial: #StopScrolling: How to Make Your Mark on Social Media When Everyone’s an Influencer these Days.
Next, consider the changing consumer
Today’s shopper is more informed, values-driven, and digitally fluent. They may enter your store already knowing about ingredients or expecting seamless online-to-instore service.
This isn’t a threat—it’s a chance to show your depth of knowledge and tailor recommendations that meet their needs with care and expertise.
For example, if a client mentions they’re looking for a moisturizer with niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, you can confidently validate their choice—then elevate it by explaining how those ingredients work together and suggesting a complementary serum to boost results.
Artificial intelligence is also reshaping the industry.
Virtual try-ons, chatbots, and automated skin analysis tools are becoming more common. Rather than fear it, use AI as a partner. Learn how it can enhance client experiences and free you up to focus on what machines can’t do—building emotional rapport, educating, and inspiring loyalty.
And finally, staffing challenges can create added stress, especially during peak hours. If your team feels stretched, communication and adaptability are key.
Stay positive, support your colleagues, and focus on what’s within your control. Being a steady presence in change builds leadership skills and shows your resilience.
Stay curious
Prioritize self-care
Invest in Training
Follow beauty news and trends—but stay grounded in your brand values and client needs.
Change is easier to manage when you feel your best.
From AI literacy to clienteling refreshers, knowledge boosts confidence.
Embrace digital trends and tools as opportunities to deepen client trust.
A flexible, curious mindset is your strongest professional asset.
Your unique human connection is what sets you apart— nurture it daily.

You’ve mastered the art of the perfect foundation match, calmed anxious clients before big events, and somehow know exactly which mascara will become their new fave. If you’ve ever wondered where all of this talent can take you—buckle up, beauty bestie. Your beauty career can go way beyond the counter. And the best part? You’re the one designing the map.
Let’s explore five major destinations in the beauty world, and the steps that can get you there—starting with where you are right now.

You know that rush you get when a launch goes flawlessly, or when you crack the code on why a product’s flying off the shelves? That energy belongs in corporate. Whether you’re headed to a retailer or a brand, your store-floor know-how makes you the perfect candidate to help shape the big picture.

• Take business, Excel, or marketing courses to boost your skills.
• Attend industry events and stay in the loop with brand updates.

• Start building a loyal audience—whether clients or followers.
• Learn the business basics: pricing, budgeting, booking systems, client care.
• Start small, test often, and evolve as you grow.

You don’t have to choose just one destination. Many beauty pros bounce between them or build a career that touches every area. The key is to stay curious, keep growing, and know that the skills you’re using today are shaping your tomorrow.

Living harmoniously with the environment during the summer can have a profound effect on your well-being.
This intuitive practice allows us to build a symbiotic relationship with the earth that can support both the planet and ourselves in sustainable evolution.
The summer season has been recognized and celebrated in various cultures throughout history, often associated with fertility, abundance, and new beginnings. This season offers us opportunities to connect with nature and engage in practices that promote mindfulness, vitality, and sustainability.
Here are some ideas to harmonize your life with nature during this time, allowing you to feel empowered and energized this summer.
Engaging in outdoor activities like hiking, biking, or yoga can help you reconnect with nature. During the summer months, the abundance of daylight invites us to spend more time outdoors.
These activities reduce stress, improve mood, and increase physical well-being. Taking time to observe the changing landscape, listen to birds, and feel the breeze can help quiet the mind and reduce anxiety!
The summer is a time of balance and renewal. Meditating outdoors allows you to ground yourself in nature. A simple yoga practice including “sun salutations” or starting a gratitude journal can also be calming activities, as they encourage you to connect with positive aspects of the present moment while strengthening your connection to the Earth. These are also great activities you can do during a break or lunch hour to help boost energy throughout the day!
Eating locally grown, organic food not only supports environmental sustainability but can also enhance your mental well-being by promoting healthier eating habits.
Visiting local farms and purchasing fresh produce gives you an opportunity to support sustainable practices while reconnecting with the rhythms of nature.
If you can, speak with some vendors and get to know your community. Beginning and tending to your own garden is also an important (and cost effective way) to connect with the earth. Growing food, as well as learning about, and tending to the ecosystem around us helps us connect so deeply and mindfully with our food and planet!
Don’t be afraid to get those hands dirty this summer!
By spending time outdoors, practicing mindfulness, and supporting sustainable local initiatives, you can improve your mental health, grow your community, and deepen your connection to the environment. All of which will support you in feeling energized and empowered!

Let’s face it, the beauty industry moves fast. With new trends, products, and rising customer expectations, it’s easy to feel like you’re constantly trying to keep up.
But here’s the good news: in the middle of all this change, you have a real opportunity to stand out. By setting clear goals and taking charge of your growth, you can turn the chaos into confidence.
At BeauteSchool, we are here to support you.
Not just in serving your customers with care and expertise, but in building a career you’re proud of. That’s why we encourage all Certified Beauty Advisors to set meaningful, achievable goals that help you grow, learn, and reach new milestones.
One of the best ways to do that? The SMART goal framework – goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. It’s a simple but powerful way to turn your ambitions into action and track your progress along the way.
You’ve got the passion. Let’s turn it into progress.
Define exactly what you want to achieve. Be clear and precise about your goals, whether it’s attending brand training to increase product knowledge or diving deeper into ingredient-specific training.
Example Goal: “I want to attend three brand training sessions to increase my product knowledge in skincare and makeup.”
Measurable
Make sure your goal has clear, quantifiable outcomes. This helps you track your progress and stay motivated.
Example Goal: “I will attend one brand training session every month and apply my new knowledge in customer consultations.”
Achievable
Ensure that your goal is realistic and attainable within the given time frame. Set challenges that push you but are still within reach.
Example Goal: “I will dedicate 1 hour each week to better understand key ingredients like hyaluronic acid and retinol.”
Align your goal with your overall career aspirations and job responsibilities. Make sure your goal contributes to your growth as a beauty advisor.
Example Goal: “By attending brand training and ingredient-specific sessions, I can provide more targeted, expert advice to my customers, helping to boost sales and customer loyalty.”
Time-bound
Set a clear deadline for achieving your goal. A timeframe creates urgency and helps you stay on track.
Example Goal: “I will attend at least 3 brandspecific training sessions before the end of the Summer season.”
Set Clear Goals: Track Your Progress: Align with Career Growth:
Break down your professional ambitions into Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound goals to make progress easier.
Use a structured worksheet to track and measure your goals to stay motivated and on target.
Focus on goals that contribute to your role as a Certified Beauty Advisor, helping you build expertise and trust with customers.

Skin and Help Customers Achieve a Balanced, Matte Look
Oily skin is typically recognized by its shiny appearance and the presence of excess sebum (oil) across the face. Without proper care, it can lead to clogged pores, blackheads, breakouts, and acne.
As a Beauty Advisor, understanding how to manage oily skin can be a game-changer in providing the right recommendations to your customers.
Oily skin can appear shiny and feel greasy to the touch. It typically has large pores and can be prone to blackheads and whiteheads.
Acne is common, and oil (sebum) can penetrate makeup, causing it to streak and change color throughout the day. If your customers are experiencing these concerns, they may have oily skin.
The key to managing oily skin is to control excess oil production without irritating or over-drying the skin. Here are a few tips to guide your customers:
Cleansing: Recommend gentle, oilcontrolling cleansers that are watersoluble and contain salicylic acid. This helps remove excess oil and dead skin cells without causing dryness. Avoid harsh scrubs or alcohol-based products, which can worsen oil production.
Treatment: For exfoliation, advise your customers to use BHA-based exfoliants (such as salicylic acid) to remove dead skin cells and reduce clogged pores. Spot treatments with salicylic acid or sulfur are also great for targeting breakouts. A clay mask 1-2 times a week can help unclog pores and reduce shine without stripping the skin.
Moisturizing: Although oily skin needs to be balanced, it still requires hydration. Recommend lightweight, oilfree moisturizers with ingredients like niacinamide or aloe to help control oil while keeping the skin hydrated.
Summer Tips: In the warmer months, advise your customers to carry oilblotting papers to absorb excess oil throughout the day. Recommend mattifying foundation or BB creams instead of full-coverage foundations to avoid a heavy, greasy look.
Avoid over-stimulating oily skin with excessive scrubbing or harsh treatments. This can lead to further oil production and irritation.
Encourage your customers to choose products that gently control oil and promote clear, balanced skin.
PRO TIP: If your customer has oily skin on their face, they may also have oily skin on their body. If so, using a body wash with salicylic acid (a BHA) can help unclog pores, reduce inflammation, and prevent breakouts.
Gentle cleansers and exfoliants with salicylic acid can help control oil production and reduce clogged pores without irritating the skin.
Oil-free, lightweight moisturizers with ingredients like niacinamide and aloe provide essential hydration without adding excess oil.
During the summer, suggest oil-blotting papers, mattifying foundations, and BB creams to keep skin looking fresh and shine-free.

A Skincare Essential for a Radiant Glow
Vitamin C is one of the most celebrated ingredients in skincare, and for good reason. Often referred to as a skincare superhero, it helps brighten the complexion, smooth texture, and protect against environmental stressors.
As a beauty advisor, understanding the basics of Vitamin C makes it easy to recommend with confidence. From its antioxidant power to its role in collagen support, this ingredient is a mustknow for helping customers achieve radiant, healthylooking skin.
Vitamin C, when applied topically, works wonders to protect the skin from premature aging. It helps diminish lines and wrinkles, brighten dull skin, and even out skin tone, making it look more radiant.
As a potent antioxidant, Vitamin C helps fight free radicals—unstable molecules that can damage the skin over time. This means your customers’ skin will have better resiliency to environmental stress, like pollution and sun exposure.
Additionally, Vitamin C calms and hydrates the skin, leaving it looking smoother, firmer, and more supple.
There are different forms of Vitamin C used in skincare products, each with varying degrees of stability and effectiveness. The most common ones include ascorbic acid, ascorbyl palmitate, and sodium ascorbyl phosphate.
These can be found in a wide range of products—from serums to moisturizers and even eye creams and sheet masks.
Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant, and applying it in the morning gives your skin an added layer of defense against daily environmental stressors. For best results, apply it to clean, dry skin to ensure maximum absorption and efficacy.
If you’re using a Vitamin C serum, apply it after cleansing and before moisturizing. This allows the active ingredients to penetrate effectively and deliver their full protective and brightening benefits. Focus on areas prone to dullness or uneven tone for a more radiant, even complexion throughout the day.
Don’t forget to recommend a broadspectrum sunscreen to your customer to apply after the Vitamin C in the morning. It boosts protection and helps to prevent further sun damage to the skin.
Vitamin C can be unstable when exposed to light and air, which can reduce its efficacy. That’s why it’s important to recommend products that come in dark, airtight packaging to keep the Vitamin C fresh and potent.
PRO TIP: Remind your customer to store their Vitamin C products in a cool, dark place to maintain their potency.

Prep the Skin: Before applying self-tanner, exfoliation is key! Recommend that customers gently buff away dead skin, especially around the elbows, knees, and ankles, to avoid patchiness. Then, suggest a light layer of moisturizer on these dry areas to create a smooth, even base.
Body Application: Encourage the use of a selftanning mitt for a streak-free finish. Long, sweeping motions from the feet up work best.
Face the Glow: For the face, suggest a formula made specifically for facial skin. Recommend using lightweight, hydrating self-tanners for the face to avoid clogged pores or irritation. These products provide a natural sun-kissed look without the risk of breakouts. Advise your customer to blend the facial self-tanner in by using small circular motions. Work the product from the center of the face and taper off towards the hairline.
To keep a tan looking fresh, advise your customer to moisturize daily to lock in hydration and avoid overexfoliating. Recommend lukewarm showers and short baths to avoid stripping the tan. Reapplying selftanner every 4–5 days will help keep the glow going strong.
