Afewyearsago, fashionandbeauty loverMadelineDellaMoraappliedto beaCosmeticAdvisorVolunteerat LookGoodFeelBetter(LGFB), Canada’sonlycharitableprogram dedicatedtohelpingpeoplemanagetheeffectscanceranditstreatmenthaveontheirappearance.This year,Madelinecelebratessixyears ofvolunteeringwithLGFBandbeing partofacommunity thatoffersa supportivecaresopeo-plecanfeel likethemselvesagain.

“You’reneveralonewhile volunteeringwithLGFB,”Madeline said.“Thisvolunteerworkhasbeen somethingthatIlookforwardtoso muchespeciallybecauseofthe senseofcommunityandfriendship sharedamongvolunteers.Going throughcancertreatmentishard, butyoushouldnotfeelalone.That’s whywearehere!”

Oneofthemostchallenging aspectsofacancerdiagnosisis th e los s of identit y that comeswithit.For30years,LGFB hasbeenhelpingpeoplefacingthe difficultcancerjournetorecognize themselvesagain.

Bodyimageisacriticalpsychosocialissueforpatientswith cancerbecausetheyoftenundergo significantchangestotheirappearance, like hair lossandskin changes.AttheheartoftheLGFB programsarecomplimentary workshopsthataddressthe appearancerelatedimpactof canceranditstreatmentwhile offeringpeopleacommunitywhere theycanconnectwithothersfacing similarchallenges.

“Manyofthesideeffectsoftreatmentarecommon.AtLGFB,weare overflowingwithproductsand techniquestomaketheappearancerelatedsideeffectsmoretolerableandmanageable,”shared Madeline. “ThemomentsIcherish themostarecandidinteractions betweenparticipants.Inoneworkshop,awomanwhohadattended yearsagoandisnowacancersurvivorcamewithherrecentlydiagnosedfriend.Shetookoutherold wig andgaveittoherfriend justto tryon.Thewiglookedsowonderful onherfriendthatwhenshewentto takeoffthewigandgiveitback,the womansaid,‘Actually,youkeepit. WhatdoIneeditforanymore?’ Thereweretearsandhugs,butthis momentmeantmorethansimply passingonawigtoafriend.It symbolizedthesupport,love,and camaraderiethatourLGFB workshopsembody.”

At LGFB,thereissomethingfor everyone.Astheseasonschange andthesuncomesout,Madeline remindsusofsomemustknow tipsforsummerskincarestarting withspringcleaningourmakeup bags!
