Fading the Spots:

My Journey to Clearer Skin

How I Tackled Hyperpigmentation with Laser & Skincare—A Guide for Beauty Advisors

Last spring and summer, I spent a great deal of time gardening, which is one of my passions. Being in the garden first thing in the morning, with an espresso in hand and visiting and smelling the flowers, fills my soul with happiness. The time passes so quickly and being immersed and connected to nature feels like I’m in the right place.

Although I did my best by using sunscreen daily, I must have not reapplied it often enough. Time would fly by and I’d catch myself looking at my watch and reminding myself to reapply sunscreen. But I didn’t always do it as I raced against the clock to get my gardening chores done.

By fall, the spots of hyperpigmentation on my skin surfaced dramatically, especially on my cheeks. I noticed a pattern of pigmentation marks along my jaw, on both sides of my face and thought that was odd. I learned that this is a common characteristic of melasma, which is a type of hyperpigmentation.

I decided at the beginning of this year to do whatever I could to minimize it, brighten my skin and prevent it in the future. In addition to learning about the best active ingredients I should use, I also investigated cosmetic treatments that would lighten the pigment and discolouration.

I learned that because I had melasma, using a type of laser treatment that did not heat the skin was key, otherwise, the melasma pigmentation could become worse. After much research on the types of laser treatments being offered for hyperpigmentation and melasma particularly, I decided to try PicoSure Pro. This laser treatment delivers 755nm energy in picoseconds; the delivery is so quick that it spares the skin from high thermal damage while optimally targeting unwanted pigment and wrinkles. In addition, it triggers a healing response that produces new collagen and elastin. Bonus! I was very excited to get started.

I visited my local spa where the medical aesthetician provided a full consultation and took photos of my skin and sent them to the PicoSure team to confirm I had melasma, which they did. Having confirmed this I was ready to get started!

In addition to the laser treatment, I decided to change my skin care regime during the laser treatment period so that I had a complete program to combat and correct my hyperpigmentation. The active ingredients that were mandatory included Vitamin C, AHA’s, Hyaluronic Acid, and daily use of sunscreen. I learned that during the laser treatment, it was important to achieve the following:

A Targeted Skincare Routine is Essential –

Use Vitamin C to combat my uneven skin tone, dark spots, brighten my skin and provide anti-oxidants for protection.

2

Use AHA’s to smooth my skin’s surface, address the uneven pigmentation and dark spots while minimizing fine lines and wrinkles.

3 1

4

Ensure my skin was well hydrated and retained moisture with Hyaluronic Acid.

Protect my skin from sun damage with daily use of a broad spectrum sunscreen.

NEOSTRATA® Smooth Surface Glycolic Peel Pads with 10% AHA (PM)

NEOSTRATA 15% Vitamin C+ PHA Serum (PM)

Vichy Liftactive Supreme H.A Serum (AM & PM)

NEOSTRATA Vitamin C Concentrate (AM)

NEOSTRATA Moisture Infusion Hydrating Cream (AM)

NEOSTRATA Hyaluronic Luminous Lift (PM)

Shiseido Clear Sunscreen Stick SPF 50+ (AM)

I’m very happy to say that after 3 PicoSure treatments and 3 months of my ‘hyperpigmentation’ regimen, I can see a visible difference in my skin. The dark spots are much lighter, some have even disappeared, my skin is much more radiant, and even toned. I plan on continuing this skin care regimen as it’s truly making a difference.

If you’d like to dive deeper into the science of pigmentation and active ingredients, take a look at the Hyperpigmentation Uncovered: Causes, Treatments, and Key Ingredients article on page 43.

I’m sharing my story with you as you may have customers who are interested in cosmetic treatments like laser for their hyperpigmentation or who plan to have it done. What’s very important is that the right cosmetic laser treatment along with the right skin care regimen go hand-in-hand for the optimal solution and results. I believe that beauty advisors should be aware of the common cosmetic treatments that are available so that you may offer the best skin care options to your customers.

In future issues, we’ll take a look at the most common cosmetic treatments available and learn how to combine them using a holistic approach including the right skin care regimen you can recommend.

Leadership, Legacy, and Launches: Elaine Shigeishi Reflects on Her Beauty Industry Journey

For over three decades, Elaine Shigeishi has shaped the beauty industry through transformative product launches and dynamic leadership at Elizabeth Arden and Shiseido. In this inspiring interview, she reflects on her proudest achievements, the keys to her success, and what’s next in 2025.

Exploring the strategies, stories, and journeys of industry

leaders.

Elaine Shigeishi

How did you end up in the beauty industry

I landed in the beauty industry by chance. I worked at Eaton’s department store when I was in my fourth year at the University of Toronto, looking to begin my career and eventually gain office experience. At the time, Eaton’s had 100 stores nationally, and I worked on the selling floor at the Eaton Centre before moving to their office tower as part of the temporary office support team. My first placement was with the Fragrances buying office. The temporary support role turned into a full-time position, and I never turned to another industry since.

What did you learn at Arden? Shiseido?

Prior to Shiseido, I worked at Elizabeth Arden for 16 years. Elizabeth Arden was owned by Unilever, and some of my key learnings include understanding the discipline of financial plans and developing robust business plans. The more interesting learnings occurred during the intense planning for marketing activations, where we generated excitement around huge launch activities and celebrity personal appearances.

I have been at Shiseido now for 18 years. I truly value our partnerships and relationships, and am very fortunate to work with incredible retail partners, suppliers, sponsorship organizations, our Global and Regional offices, and our incredible teams within the company. I learned that it takes a village to achieve significant milestones, and am grateful for the support of everyone I work with.

How did your Japanese heritage affect you in your work with Shiseido?

I am third-generation Japanese-Canadian. I have an understanding of the cross-cultural aspects, which is beneficial when I work with our Shiseido and Clé de Peau Beauté Global Head Office teams in Tokyo. To me, it is more important to align with Shiseido’s corporate culture and core values. Shiseido globally has underlying principles of respect, collaboration, and strong work-ethic. I feel very connected with the corporate culture and the global mission of Beauty Innovations for a Better World.

How would you describe your leadership style?

I really enjoy working as a team to meet our shared goals. My leadership style is collaborative – I value listening to different opinions, learning from others, advocating for my team, and leading by example.

What are keys to your success as a VP?

Everyone I work with! No success is individual. Many people work with me to achieve our goals, and I am fortunate to lead a strong team.

What are you most proud of?

I am so proud of many things, starting with my family. My two daughters truly inspire me.

A career moment of pride is Shiseido’s AGO sponsorship of Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirrors exhibition, and the opportunity to bring her polka-dotted red-and-white cosmetics bag to the market. The stores were covered in her iconic polka dots! Looking back, we did not truly realize how incredible this collaboration was and how quickly it evolved.

I have 3 career launches that stand out for me. At Elizabeth Arden, the Britney Spears Curious fragrance launch was huge, with television ads, launch parties with dance troops, and events with the Spears Pears demonstrator teams. Following this, the launch of Prevage was a breakthrough, and the story was first told on the Shopping Channel. I quickly learned that selling on television is a skill. Additionally, launching Ultimune at Shiseido was massive. I fondly remember the mobile lab cross-country tour, educating our staff, retailers, beauty advisors, and consumers to create a new pillar for the brand.

I am also very proud of many celebrity personal appearances and PR activations that we created and brought to Toronto. Working with Elizabeth Taylor, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and their teams were a highlight. Most recently, I had the chance to attend the global launch event for Shiseido’s announcement of Anne Hathaway as the brand ambassador for one of my favourite skincare collections, Vital Perfection. The campaign is themed around the concept of “Potential Has No Age,” a beautiful message we hope Beauty Advisors will share with their customers.

How important is educating customers today?

It is so important to educate customers because there is an infinite amount of information available at our fingertips. We need to support our customers in navigating the noise and supporting them with their needs. I love hearing stories of the relationships between Beauty Advisors and Customers who then become lifelong trusted friends.

What’s to come in 2025?

I am excited about 2025! We have incredible launches that I can’t quite share yet….hold on!

What advice would you give to beauty advisors starting in the industry today?

I truly believe successful people are defined as being resourceful, goal-oriented, and having a positive attitude. In my career, these qualities have held true. In addition, I would add that the underlying secret to success is caring for those around you, and everything you do.

A Career Beyond the Counter: The Endless Possibilities of Being a Beauty Advisor

When people think of a Retail Beauty Advisor, they might picture someone helping customers find their perfect foundation match or recommending a skincare routine. And while that’s true, there’s so much more to this role than meets the eye. For many, it’s not just a job—it’s the first step of an exciting and fulfilling career path. For myself, it started as a part-time gig and developed into a 25+ year career, spanning across two provinces and a territory!

Transform your expertise into trust and confidence, creating customer relationships that go beyond the transaction.

One of the best things about my own career as a Beauty Advisor is that it was about more than just selling products. You’re a trusted expert, a problem solver, and a confidence booster all rolled into one, and you get to work with some outstanding people along the way. The connections you build with customers AND colleagues, and your ability to make a difference in their lives, are what set this role apart from typical retail positions.

Building a strong professional reputation can open doors and elevate your career.

You can look at your store position as an opportunity to build your own personal brand - what people think about as a professional! This applies to customers of course, but also to store management, corporate support folks, and brand representatives that you encounter. By being a good partner to support the brands that you sell, you leave a lasting impression, and in turn, they will be there to support you too.

Beauty Advisor role can be a gateway to management, education, or even product development.

But what about growth? The beauty industry is massive, and starting as a Beauty Advisor can open doors to many opportunities. If you love the retail side, you can move into management, training new advisors, or overseeing entire stores or regions. Maybe you’re passionate about product knowledge — why not aim for a role in brand education? Many Beauty Advisors go on to become corporate trainers, traveling the country to teach others about the latest launches. Some even work at corporate offices as buyers, and responsible for getting those exciting products to store shelves! For those with a creative streak, starting on the retail floor could lead to work as a makeup artist, a beauty influencer, or even a product developer. Your firsthand knowledge of customer needs gives you valuable insight that brands crave when creating new products or marketing campaigns.

Find fulfillment in connecting with clients, growing your skills, and staying excited about beauty every day.

Of course, you don’t have to climb a ladder to make this role a long-term career. Many Beauty Advisors choose to stay in the role because they genuinely love it. The flexibility, the chance to connect with people, and the ever-evolving nature of the beauty world make it endlessly exciting. One of my favourite lines I ever heard from another Beauty Advisor was “Every time I see a new box come in, I get so excited that I pee my pants a little!”

Whether you want to grow into new roles or make a lasting impact right where you are, being a Retail Beauty Advisor is the perfect starting point for a career in beauty. The possibilities are endless—you just have to take that first step. Start thinking about where you would like to end up, and watch this column in future issues as we explore the different routes you can go in this incredible, ever changing industry.

Val Bradshaw

The year was 1977. Disco was the rage with big hair and bigger dreams. The cosmetic department I worked in came alive with people and products. It was an exciting time! I stayed in the industry for over 5 decades because I became completely enamoured with skincare, makeup and fragrance – the holy trinity!

In a world of everchanging beauty trends, continual learning will help you stay at the top of your game.

I found a vocation that has allowed me to grow with it for over half a century. This industry is always evolving and improving which means there’s always something to learn. Education is essential. CRACKING THE CODE

Dry vs. Dehydrated Skin

Master the key differences to recommend the perfect products with confidence.

Understanding the difference between dry and dehydrated skin is crucial for effectively addressing your customers’ unique skincare needs. Here’s how you can educate them with clarity and confidence.

Let’s start with dry skin. Dry skin is a skin type—it’s part of who your customer is, like their hair or eye colour. How can you identify dry skin? Dry skin characteristics include small pores, low oil production, and often a feeling of tightness or dis-

comfort. Visually, dry skin often appears thin, may have a slightly flaky texture, and lacks surface shine. You might also notice redness or a more transparent look, where the skin appears almost see-through.

The upside? Dry skin tends to be less prone to acne. Recommend rich, creamy products with ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramides, Shea Butter and Glycerin. These create a comforting barrier that locks in moisture and protects their skin from environmental stressors.

Dehydrated skin, on the other hand, is a temporary condition

Caused by a lack of water in the skin. It can happen to anyone—even customers with oily skin! Dehydrated skin often looks dull and crepey, with fine lines that may seem more pronounced. You might notice an uneven texture or a lack of plumpness, giving the skin a tired or deflated appearance. Many customers might think they just need to drink more water, but explain that sometimes their skin needs extra help holding onto moisture. Recommend products with Hyaluronic Acid, a hydration powerhouse that draws water into the skin. When combined with other ingredients like glucosamine, which improves hydration, it can also boost skin brightness and smoothness.

For both dry and dehydrated skin, gentle exfoliation is key. Suggest products with polyhydroxy acids (PHAs). These are chemical exfoliants with a larger molecular size than alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs). They penetrate less deeply into the epidermis and are more

suitable for sensitive skin or skin with conditions. They are effective yet gentle, helping remove dead skin cells so hydration products work better.

Here are three helpful questions to ask your customers to identify whether they have dry or dehydrated skin:

“Does your skin feel tight or uncomfortable most of the time, or only during certain periods, like in winter?”

“Do you notice flakiness or redness, or does your skin look dull and crepey?”

“How does your skin feel after applying moisturizer—instantly comfortable or like it needs a second layer?”

By identifying whether their skin is dry or dehydrated, you can guide your customers to the right ingredients and products, keeping their skin comfortable, healthy, and glowing—especially during those tricky winter months.

What’s the Difference?

This article helps Retail Beauty Advisors understand the key differences between dry and dehydrated skin, equipping you with the knowledge to recommend the right products. Learn how to spot the signs and recommend effective solutions like Hyaluronic Acid and Ceramides to provide your customers with hydration that truly works.

Understand the Difference:

Dry skin is a skin type, while dehydrated skin is a temporary condition. By learning to distinguish between the two, you can recommend the most effective products to meet your customers’ unique needs.

Key Ingredients for Hydration:

Whether your customer has dry or dehydrated skin, ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramides, and Glycerin are your go-to options. These ingredients provide deep hydration and lock in moisture, giving your clients the comfort and glow they crave.

Hyperpigmentation Uncovered:

Hyperpigmentation

Causes, Treatments, and Key Ingredients

What is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin concern that affects millions of people worldwide. It appears as dark patches or spots caused by excess melanin production in the skin. While hyperpigmentation can be stubborn, understanding its causes and how to target it with the right ingredients can help your customers achieve a more even, radiant complexion. Hyperpigmentation occurs when the skin produces too much melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour. It can appear as:

Sun-Induced Spots: Small dark spots on areas frequently exposed to the sun, like the forehead, upper cheeks, and nose.

Melasma: Dark patches often triggered by hormonal changes and worsened by light and heat, commonly seen on the upper lip, forehead, and cheeks.

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH): Dark patches that form after inflammation, such as acne or skin injury.

Key Causes of Hyperpigmentation

Sun Exposure: UV rays increase melanin production as a defense mechanism.

Hormonal Changes: Hormones can stimulate excess melanin, as seen in melasma.

Inflammation: Skin damage or irritation can lead to pigment changes.

The Science of Melanin Production

Melanin production, or melanogenesis (MSH), begins when the skin is stressed by factors like UV rays, hormones, or inflammation.

Here’s how it works:

1. Skin cells release the hormone (MSH) to signal melanocytes, the pigmentproducing cells.

2. MSH activates an enzyme called tyrosinase, which starts melanin production.

3. Melanin is packaged into melanosomes (little packets) and sent to skin cells to protect them from damage.

There are two types of melanin:

Eumelanin: Produces brown or black pigments.

Pheomelanin: Produces red or yellow pigments, often seen in fair skin.

Treatment Ingredients for Hyperpigmentation

Several ingredients can help reduce pigmentation by targeting different stages of melanin production. Consistency is key for visible results. Look for the following active ingredients when recommending a solution for your customers.

By combining the right ingredients with consistent use and proper sun protection, your customers can achieve a brighter, more even complexion while improving their overall skin health.

Reducing Stress Without Sacrificing Performance

Find out how to meet your sales targets, manage your time, and handle the unexpected while maintaining your energy and positivity.

Being a Retail Beauty Advisor is no easy feat. From meeting sales goals to managing demanding clients and juggling multiple tasks, it can often feel like the pressure is mounting. But what if you could transform that stress into something positive? In this article, we’ll dive into some practical strategies for reducing stress on the job, helping you not only survive— but thrive—in the fast-paced world of retail beauty. Whether you’re working with limited staff or navigating challenging customer interactions, we’ll show you how to stay calm, stay focused, and continue to excel as a beauty professional.

What is your ‘window of tolerance’?

It can feel overwhelming when experiencing pressure to meet specific sales goals. However, a little pressure isn’t always a bad thing. If we know how to work with it, short term stress can even be motivating! The trick is to notice how activated or stressed this “pressure” makes you feel. We all have what is called a window of tolerance. We want to ensure that we stay in this window in order to function thoughtfully and

effectively. A little bit of stress can keep us in that window while giving us the alertness and energy to execute our goals. Take the time to notice how your sales targets make you feel by asking yourself the following questions:

Are these goals realistic?

Do I have the time, skills, confidence, and resources to reach my targets?

Will this be challenging in a way that forces me to bring effort and intention into my day?

If so, it sounds like this is a good experience of pressure and stress. However, if you’re feeling overwhelmed to the point where you often feel irritated, angry, worried, or anxious at work, you may want to consider solutions for factors listed in question 2 or ask management for support.

Focus on one task at a time

It’s also common to feel overwhelmed due to staffing issues and you may carry a great deal

of responsibility in your role. Responsibility is a normal part of life and if we look at all of our tasks collectively anyone would feel anxious. It is important to remember to focus on one task at a time (multi-tasking actually makes us less productive!), break down more complex tasks into step by step actions, and approach your day with a sense of calm. You can do this by literally slowing down! Forget operating by the clock and any sense of urgency, and start walking slower, talking slower, and moving slower. This tells our nervous system that we’re safe and in the long run, allows us to be far more efficient and productive, whether we have 3 tasks to complete in a day or 12!

Stay Calm, Stay Confident Turning Tension Into Trust

It can also be distressing to be met with a demanding consumer who may feel off put by being guided or educated. Customer service requires us to continue smiling, remain calm, and frankly, tolerate all sorts of complex personalities. When it comes to difficult people, your best bet is to remember, people are the experts of their own life.

You may have wonderful and extensive knowledge that may make their lives better! However people only hear when they’re open to listening, and this is something you can’t always control. However, if you remain calm, understanding, open, and validating, you may notice that your client, over time, softens. Once that sense of calm and rapport is noticeable, you may be able to gently offer a suggestion. Remember to breathe deeply (in through your nose, into your belly, and out through your nose), and stay positive, a calm nervous system is quite literally contagious!

No Testers? No problem!

Gone are the days of testers in the mass beauty aisles, but finding the perfect foundation, concealer, or powder shade doesn’t have to be a challenge. With a few simple strategies, you can guide your customers to their ideal match—no testers needed!

Refer to Past Favourites

If the customer has a shade they’ve loved before, use it as a starting point. Compare their old bottle to new options in-store, or check online shade comparisons across brands to find a match.

Determine Undertone

Start by identifying the customer’s undertone. While experienced Beauty Advisors may recognize this instantly, a quick White Paper Test can help:

Hold a sheet of white paper near their face in natural light.

If their skin appears rosy or bluish, the undertone is cool.

If it looks golden or yellowish, the undertone is warm.

If neither tone stands out, the undertone is neutral.

Why is this important? A correct undertone ensures the makeup enhances natural hues, prevents ashy or orange tones, and creates a seamless, radiant finish.

Try a Quick Visual Match

Once you’ve identified the undertone, determine their coverage preferences and skin type, and guide them to shades with matching undertones.

Select a few options and hold the bottles next to their jawline in good lighting. This simple step can make shade matching quicker and more accurate. Use Virtual Tools

Use Virtual Tools

Leverage technology to simplify the process. Many brands offer virtual try-on tools accessible via QR codes or their websites. These tools allow customers to upload a photo or use their phone camera to receive shade recommendations. Show them how to use their devices or instore tech to explore these features. Online swatches, especially those showcasing shades on diverse skin tones, can also provide helpful guidance.

Pro Tips for Success

Find the best light: Natural daylight works best. Have customers stand near a window or angle their face toward overhead lighting to avoid shadows.

Consider coverage levels: Full-coverage products require a closer match, while sheer formulas are more forgiving. With these tips, shade matching remains simple and effective— even without testers.

Boost your sales

with this hydration hero.

When consulting with your customers, ask the following questions to determine whether Hyaluronic Acid will benefit them:

1

Are you beginning to see fine lines and wrinkles?

2

Does your skin feel dry or dehydrated?

3

Is your moisturizer providing enough hydration?

4

Are you using Retinol or Vitamin C in your skin care products?

Skin’s Best Friend: The Magic of Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid (also known as HA) has earned its spot as one of skin care’s most popular ingredients, and for good reason—it’s a hydration hero that appeals to nearly everyone. As a Beauty Advisor, understanding the benefits of this versatile ingredient will empower you to confidently recommend it to your customers. Let’s explore why hyaluronic acid is such a standout in skin care routines.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance produced by your body that is excellent at retaining moisture. It’s found throughout your body and helps to lubricate joints, make skin flexible, reduce wrinkles and fine lines, and heal wounds by drawing nutrient-rich moisture to the area.

Think of HA like a sponge that draws water from the environment to the skin. It holds 1000’s of times its weight in water and delivers it easily to the skin.

Hyaluronic acid is a crowd-pleaser because it works for all skin types. Customers with dry skin will love its ability to deeply hydrate and replenish moisture, while those with oily or combination skin will appreciate its lightweight texture that won’t clog pores. Even customers with sensitive skin can benefit from its soothing, non-irritating properties. Whether your customer’s skin feels tight, flaky, or lacks that healthy glow, HA can help restore comfort and radiance.

Did you know that using Retinol and Vitamin C or other skincare ingredients in combination with Hyaluronic Acid aids in the efficacy of your customer’s daily skincare routine? The secret is to balance these powerful ingredients and use them together to maximize their benefits on the skin.

This powerhouse ingredient can be found in a wide range of products. Serums are a great place to start for a concentrated boost of hydration. You’ll also find hyaluronic acid in moisturizers, eye creams, and sheet masks, making it easy for customers to incorporate into their regimens.

Encourage your customers to layer a serum under their moisturizer for maximum moisture retention. Hyaluronic acid is best used twice a day— morning and night. For optimal results, remind your customers to apply it to slightly damp skin to help it bind water more effectively.

For customers new to skin care, a moisturizer or hydrating sheet mask infused with HA can be an effective introduction. You can also recommend adding a few drops of HA serum into their moisturizer.

By sharing the benefits of hyaluronic acid and showing your customers how to use it, you’re not just selling a product— you’re helping them unlock the secret to healthy, hydrated, glowing skin that feels amazing year-round.

Winter Hair Woes:

The Key Ingredients & Pro Tips Beauty Advisors Need to Know

Winter can be brutal on hair. Cold temperatures, dry indoor heating, and harsh winds strip moisture from strands, leading to dryness, frizz, and breakage. As a retail beauty advisor, understanding how winter affects hair and which ingredients provide deep hydration can help you recommend the best products to your customers.

How Winter Affects Hair

During colder months, hair cuticles lift due to lack of moisture, making strands rough, brittle, and prone to static. The scalp may also become dry, causing itchiness and flakiness. Customers will often complain of dull, unmanageable hair—this is your opportunity to guide them toward the right solutions.

By guiding customers to the right products, you can help them maintain soft, shiny, and healthy hair all winter long!

Learn more about Hair Colour & Care in the Retail Beauty Advisor Certification Program.

Key Hydrating Ingredients & Their Benefits

Hyaluronic Acid

Shea Butter & Argan Oil

Glycerin & Aloe Vera

Keratin & Silk Proteins

Known for its intense moisture retention, it helps hair absorb and hold hydration.

These natural emollients smooth the hair cuticle, reducing frizz and preventing breakage.

Humectants that draw moisture into the hair, combating dryness and static.

Strengthen and repair hair damaged by winter stressors.

How to Recommend the Right Products

For Dry, Frizzy Hair

For Brittle, Breakage-Prone Hair

For Itchy Scalps

Suggest leave-in conditioners or hair masks with shea butter or argan oil.

Look for strengthening formulas with keratin or silk proteins.

Recommend soothing shampoos with aloe vera and glycerin.

How to Combat Dryness Damage

Winter strips moisture from hair, leading to dryness, frizz, and breakage. Key ingredients like hyaluronic acid, shea butter, and keratin restore hydration and strength. Beauty advisors should personalize product recommendations based on hair type and winter concerns.

From Social Media to the Skin: Glass Skin Explained

Social media has popularized countless beauty trends, but few are as captivating as the “Glass Skin” look. Originating in Korean beauty, this trend has taken North America by storm. Characterized by smooth, plump, radiant skin with a luminous, almost reflective quality, it’s a look your customers are eager to achieve—and you can help them get there!

What is Glass Skin?

Glass skin represents healthy skin at its finest. It’s about more than a glowing surface; it’s about achieving skin health from within. The foundation of this look lies in hydration, nourishment, and consistent care. Teach your customers that glass skin starts with a synergistic routine addressing the deeper layers of the skin, paired with a healthy lifestyle.

Guide Your Customers to Achieve the Smooth, Luminous Look Everyone Wants

Educate on Lifestyle Support

Healthy skin begins with a balanced lifestyle. Encourage customers to stay hydrated, consume antioxidant-rich foods, and limit processed foods and alcohol. Suggest ways to reduce inflammation, like adding lemon and ginger to water, practicing mindfulness, and incorporating gentle exercise like walking or Pilates to improve circulation and detoxification.

Build a Daily Skin Care Regimen

Guide your customers to establish a tailored skin care routine that includes:

Double Cleansing – Start with an oil-based cleanser to remove impurities, followed by an active cleanser with AHA or BHA to refine texture.

Exfoliation – Recommend gentle exfoliants, such as L-mandelic acid or encapsulated retinol, to boost cellular turnover.

Nutrient-Rich Serums –Suggest serums packed with vitamins, peptides, and antioxidants to brighten and protect the skin.

Hydration – Highlight the importance of hydrating mists, lipid-based serums, and creams with hyaluronic acid or essential fatty acids.

Don’t Forget the Finishing Touch

A mineral-based hydrating foundation will enhance the glass skin look while maintaining skin health. Teach your customers how to blend and set makeup with hydrating mists for a flawless finish.

By educating your customers on achieving glass skin through consistent care, thoughtful product selection, and lifestyle adjustments, you’ll empower them to embrace their healthiest, most radiant complexion yet.

Lifestyle Matters:

Educate customers on how hydration, a diet rich in antioxidants, and mindful practices like exercise and stress reduction can support healthy, glowing skin from within.

Finishing Touch:

Suggest mineral-based hydrating foundations and setting techniques with hydrating mists to enhance and maintain the glass skin effect while supporting overall skin health.

Tailored Skincare Routine:

Build a regimen focused on double cleansing, gentle exfoliation, nutrient-rich serums, and hydration using products with hyaluronic acid, peptides, and antioxidants for optimal skin health.

“Glass skin,” inspired by Korean beauty, is the ultimate standard of healthy, luminous, and smooth skin. It requires a balanced lifestyle, a consistent skincare routine, and thoughtful product choices. Retail beauty advisors can guide customers by emphasizing hydration, nourishment, and lifestyle habits while recommending tailored skincare regimens and makeup techniques to achieve this radiant look.

Speak the Language of Love: A Beauty Advisor’s Guide to Fragrance Gifting

Fragrance is one of the most personal and romantic gifts a customer can give, making it a perfect choice for Valentine’s Day. As a Beauty Advisor, your role is to guide customers in selecting the ideal scent that reflects their loved one’s personality, lifestyle, and preferences.

Master fragrance vocabulary and make personalized recommendations with ease.

Understanding Your Customer’s Needs

Start by asking key questions to help narrow down the options:

Does the recipient have a favourite fragrance or scent family? (Floral, fruity, woody, fresh, etc.)

Can you describe their personality? Are they bold and confident, soft and romantic, or adventurous and free-spirited?

What is their lifestyle? Do they need a fragrance for work, special occasions, or everyday wear?

If the customer isn’t sure, suggest options based on personality and preferences. For example, a vibrant, energetic person may enjoy citrus or fruity notes, while someone elegant and classic may prefer floral or powdery scents.

Speaking the Language of Love: Fragrance Vocabulary

When describing a fragrance, use words that evoke emotions and imagery:

Top Notes: The first impression – fresh, zesty, sparkling, or invigorating.

Heart Notes: The soul of the fragrance – romantic, velvety, floral, warm.

Base Notes: The lasting impression – sensual, deep, woody, rich.

By using descriptive language, you’ll help customers connect emotionally with the fragrance and feel more confident in their choice.

Customer Scenario: A Fragrance Experience in Action

After learning more about the fragrance recipient, the Beauty Advisor, Mia, selects a best-selling fragrance to introduce.

Mia: “Close your eyes for a moment and imagine the first rays of morning sunlight filtering through a citrus grove. That’s what she’ll experience with this fragrance’s top notes—bright, sparkling bergamot and juicy mandarin, instantly uplifting and full of energy.”

She sprays the scent on a blotter and hands it to the customer.

Mia: “Now, as the fragrance unfolds, it reveals its heart—a delicate bouquet of velvety rose and jasmine, like a fresh bouquet gifted on a romantic evening. There’s a warmth here, like the soft embrace of a cashmere wrap.”

She allows the customer a moment to take it in.

Mia: “And finally, the base notes—where the magic lingers. The sensual blend of creamy vanilla and smooth sandalwood adds depth, like the lingering memory of a beautiful moment you never want to forget.”

Customer: “Wow, that’s beautiful! It really does make me feel something.”

Mia: “That’s the power of fragrance— it’s not just a scent, it’s a story waiting to be worn.

By using vivid, emotional language, Mia helps the customer form a deeper connection with the fragrance, making them more confident in their decision.

Explain different fragrance forms (Eau de Parfum vs. Eau de Toilette) to help them choose the right strength.

Gift wrapping adds a special touch— offer it whenever possible!

Buff Skin to a Glow! Understanding Microdermabrasion

Skin Care Expert and Spa Director, Civello Salon

Buff Skin to a Glow!

Understanding Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion reveals smoother, firmer, and more radiant skin. While beauty advisors don’t perform this treatment, understanding its benefits and recommending proper post skin care helps you guide your customers in maintaining healthy, glowing skin. Encourage informed skin care choices and foster trusted relationships with your customers.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure commonly offered at Day Spas, Medi Spas, and Facial Bars. It gently buffs away the dead outer layer of skin using fine crystals or a diamond-tipped wand, allowing skin care products to absorb more effectively. Treatments are tailored to individual skin types to achieve the best results.

Understand what microdermabrasion is and who it’s for.

Educate customers on post-treatment skincare and what to avoid.

Recommend appropriate skin care products to maintain results.

Key Benefits

Firmer Skin: Boosts collagen production.

Smoother Texture: Encourages new skin cell regeneration.

Radiant Glow: Enhances circulation and improves product absorption.

Who is Microdermabrasion For?

Recommended for individuals with: Hyperpigmentation, Acne scars, blackheads, large pores, Surgical scars, fine lines, and wrinkles

Who is it Not Suitable For?

Active acne, eczema, rosacea, or extremely sensitive skin

Open wounds, infections, or cold sores, recent chemical peels, laser treatments, waxing, or use of AHAs, BHAs, Retinol (wait 5-7 days), and Individuals on acne medications or blood thinners

Post-Treatment Skin Care Essentials

Hydrating & Soothing Ingredients:

Hyaluronic Acid: Why It’s Recommended: Hyaluronic acid is a powerful humectant that attracts and retains moisture in the skin. After microdermabrasion, the skin’s natural barrier is temporarily compromised, making it prone to dehydration. Hyaluronic acid helps maintain optimal hydration, leaving the skin plump, supple, and refreshed without causing irritation.

Aloe Vera: Why It’s Recommended: Aloe vera is renowned for its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. It calms redness, reduces post-treatment inflammation, and provides a cooling effect that comforts sensitive skin. Additionally, aloe supports the skin’s healing process, helping to repair any minor irritation from the exfoliation.

Vitamin C: Why It’s Recommended: Vitamin C is an antioxidant powerhouse that promotes collagen synthesis, brightens the skin, and helps fade hyperpigmentation. After microdermabrasion, when the skin is more receptive to active ingredients, vitamin C can penetrate effectively to even out skin tone and enhance the treatment’s glow-boosting effects.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3): Why It’s Recommended: Niacinamide is a versatile ingredient that strengthens the skin’s barrier, reduces redness, and improves overall skin resilience. Its anti-inflammatory properties are especially beneficial after exfoliation, helping to calm sensitivity while enhancing hydration and reducing the appearance of pores.

Ceramides: Why It’s Recommended: Ceramides are lipids that are naturally found in the skin’s barrier. After microdermabrasion, the skin’s protective barrier may be slightly weakened. Applying ceramide-rich products helps to restore this barrier, lock in moisture, and prevent transepidermal water loss, ensuring long-term hydration and protection.

Ingredients to Avoid Post-

Microdermabrasion:

Retinoids (Retinol, Tretinoin):

Why to Avoid: Retinoids accelerate cell turnover, which can cause additional peeling, dryness, and irritation on already sensitized skin. Using retinoids too soon after microdermabrasion can lead to excessive redness, flaking, and discomfort.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) & Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs):

Why to Avoid: AHAs (like glycolic and lactic acid) and BHAs (like salicylic acid) are chemical exfoliants. Since microdermabrasion has already physically exfoliated the skin, using these acids can lead to over-exfoliation, causing irritation, redness, and potential skin barrier damage.

Alcohol-Based Products:

Why to Avoid: Products with high alcohol content can be overly drying and strip the skin of its natural moisture. Post-treatment skin is more vulnerable to dehydration, and

alcohol-based products can exacerbate dryness, irritation, and tightness.

Harsh Scrubs & Physical Exfoliants:

Why to Avoid: The skin has already undergone intensive exfoliation during microdermabrasion. Adding physical scrubs or abrasive exfoliants can cause microtears in the skin, increase sensitivity, and lead to prolonged redness or discomfort.

Fragranced Skincare Products:

Why to Avoid: Synthetic fragrances can be irritating, especially for freshly exfoliated skin. Fragranced products may trigger allergic reactions, redness, or sensitivity, making it safer to opt for fragrancefree formulas during the recovery period.

External Factors to Avoid PostMicrodermabrasion:

After a microdermabrasion treatment, the skin is more

sensitive and requires extra care to prevent irritation and support healing. Avoid direct sun exposure, as the skin is vulnerable to UV damage—always apply a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen. Refrain from wearing makeup for at least 24 hours to allow the skin to recover.

Hot showers, saunas, and chlorinated pools can exacerbate redness and dryness, so it’s best to steer clear of these for 48 hours. Lastly, resist the urge to touch or pick at the skin, as this can introduce bacteria, leading to irritation or breakouts. Proper aftercare ensures radiant, healthy results.

Skin care Regimen for Long-Lasting Results:

To maintain the radiant glow after microdermabrasion, a gentle and nourishing skin care routine is key. Use mild cleansers and hydrating moisturizers to soothe and support the skin’s barrier.

Daily application of broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+) is essential to protect newly exfoliated skin from UV damage. Incorporate antioxidant serums, like vitamin C or green tea, to boost skin repair and defend against environmental stressors. At night, apply peptide-rich creams to promote skin renewal and enhance firmness while you sleep, ensuring your results stay fresh and vibrant.
