Smells can affect us emotionally, psychologically, and physically, and can even elicit memories of places and people. Therefore, it is no surprise that fragrance is such an important part of the cosmetic industry.

The world of cosmetics, skin care, and fragrance have many similarities but differ in certain respects. The application of cosmetics, for example, is visual and the impact is instantaneous. The artistry of the Beauty Advisor can be seen and evaluated. Whereas the power of fragrance is more mysterious and subjective.

The promotion and sale of fragrances are highly based on emotion. It is the emotions that the scent activates in the mind of the customer that are essential. Therefore, the mystery and allure of fragrance are personal, special, and lasting.

The role of the Beauty Advisor is to guide the customer into finding a fragrance that is the right match for them or for a gift.

The use of language when selling fragrance is key to showcasing your expertise while simultaneously creating a vivid picture of the life and emotions that each unique fragrance inspires.

If your customer is shopping for themselves, ask open ended questions, such as “What is your favourite fragrance right now?”. If your customer is purchasing a gift, ask ‘What fragrances does the recipient currently enjoy?”If they are not familiar with the recipients favorite fragrance, ask questions about the their personality, hobbies, tastes, etc., that will give you some direction regarding fragrances they may enjoy.

By getting to know more about your customer, their likes and dislikes, you will be better prepared to provide them with customized and knowledgeable service.

As new fragrances arrive, inform yourself about their notes, classification, unique aspects, and let your customers know about them. It is essential that you understand and can effectively communicate how fragrance is made, the different forms of fragrance, fragrance classifications, how to properly test, apply, and wear fragrance, as well as layering techniques and offer complimentary products.

Selling Fragrance 101 Dazzle your customers this holiday season by implementing these 5 easy steps to successfully sell fragrance!

There is an art to the sale of fragrance. It is a unique consultation in that finding the right fragrance for your customer involves understanding their preferences, and then matching those with scents that need to be experienced first, before a purchase is made.

Implementing the e5 steps and techniques, that are found in the Retail Beauty Advisor Certification - Fragrance Course will help you successfully achieve your fragrance sales.

1. Engage Be prepared to engage with your customer by b e c o m i n g a ' f r a g r a n c e a u t h o r i t y ' .B e knowledgeable about your fragrances, their classification, predominant notes, vocabulary, and prices.

- Using the tester, spray the fragrance on your customer's wrist - ten inches away to diffuse the scent. Do not apply the fragrance over top of another fragrance. If you customer prefers not to have the fragrance applied, use a scent card to demonstrate the fragrance. Keep in mind that fragrance develops on the skin and will provide the customer with a true representation of how the fragrance will smell on them. Alternatively, if you can, provide a customer with a sample that they can experience at another time.

- Smelling more than three fragrances within an hour can result in odor fatigue. Odor fatigue means that the person loses the ability to distinguish between fragrances and their subtle nuances.

Introduce ancillary fragrance products such as body lotion, cream, and bath and shower products that you carry in your store. Using ancillary products, or ‘layering’ fragrance, provides the ultimate, long-lasting scent that your customer can enjoy.

5. Enhance Provide your customer with fragrance samples that suit their tastes and preferences. Provide a brief description of each. And, don’t forget to invite your customers back and find out which fragrance samples they preferred.

Looking Good, Feeling Better: Madeline’s Volunteer Story A few years ago, fashion and beauty lover Madeline Della Mora applied to be a Cosmetic Advisor Volunteer at Look Good Feel Better (LGFB), Canada’s only charitable program dedicated to helping people manage the effects cancer and its treatment have on their appearance. This year, Madeline celebrates six years of volunteering with LGFB and being part of a community that offers a supportive care so peo-ple can feel like themselves again.

“You’re never alone while volunteering with LGFB,” Madeline said. “This volunteer work has been something that I look forward to so much especially because of the sense of community and friendship shared among volunteers. Going through cancer treatment is hard, but you should not feel alone. That’s why we are here!”

One of the most challenging aspects of a cancer diagnosis is the loss of identity that comes with it. For 30 years, LGFB has been helping people facing the difficult cancer journe to recognize themselves again.

Body image is a critical psychosocial issue for patients with cancer because they often undergo significant changes to their appearance, like hair loss and skin changes. At the heart of the LGFB programs are complimentary workshops that address the appearance related impact of cancer and its treatment while offering people a community where they can connect with others facing similar challenges.

“Many of the side effects of treatment are common. At LGFB, we are overflowing with products and techniques to make the appearance related side effects more tolerable and manageable,” shared Madeline. “The moments I cherish the most are candid interactions between participants. In one workshop, a woman who had attended years ago and is now a cancer survivor came with her recently diagnosed friend. She took out her old wig and gave it to her friend just to try on. The wig looked so wonderful on her friend that when she went to take off the wig and give it back, the woman said, ‘Actually, you keep it.

What do I need it for anymore?’

There were tears and hugs, but this moment meant more than simply passing on a wig to a friend. It symbolized the support, love, and camaraderie that our LGFB workshops embody.”

At LGFB, there is something for everyone. As the seasons change and the sun comes out, Madeline reminds us of some must know tips for summer skincare starting with spring cleaning our makeup bags!

“Did you know products should ONLY be used for three to six months? Once they’re opened, oxygen begins to degrade the formula, and they’ll start to expire regardless of the use-by date. And sunscreen is a non-negotiable all year round, but especially in the warmer months when we’re spending more time with our skin exposed!”

Madeline is proud to support those facing cancer through LGFB workshops both online and in-person.

Help people facing cancer, like Meera I think it’s important to have tools to make cancer patients feel like ourselves. What I learned at the LGFB workshops helped reduce some of the depression associated with the physical changes we go through.
