Back to School Joanne Martin

he long summer holidays are just about over - younger children will be excited about returning to school, teenagers probably less so (outwardly), but looking forward to seeing friends again to ‘compare notes’. After many relaxing days and nights, it can be difficult for them to get back into the ’school-mind-set’.

Get back into routine Many families will be ready to re-establish the good bedtime routine. The week before school starts it is a good idea to bring back gradually earlier bedtimes (without mobile phones!) with a view to rising in the morning at the usual going-to-school time.

This makes going-back-to-school much smoother for both children and parents. Most children begin staying up late in the summer months. But children need 9 1/2 to 11 hours of sleep a night, depending on their age (teenagers need around 9 1/2 hours; toddlers usually do best with 11). Getting them back on schedule, so they are sound asleep by 9pm, and up at 7am for school, takes a couple of weeks of gradually moving the bedtime earlier.

Leaving this until the night before term starts can result in a child - not ready for an earlier bedtime - having slept-in that morning, with the ‘night-before-school jitters’. Expect everyone’s anxiety to escalate! So, start moving bedtime a bit earlier each day by having them read in bed (not computer games) for an hour before ‘lights-out’, also good for their reading skills. Encourage children of all ages to be aware of the morning schedule of a typical school-day.

Older children could record all the timings and what needs doing. Plan some morning activities for the week before school starts, so that everyone is in the habit of getting up, dressing and having breakfast to a set time.

Have a timetable/planner As soon as your school has produced its timetables, encourage your child to produce their own planner at home, with the days that they need to remember homework, PE kit or musical instruments. Make it their responsibility to keep you informed of any changes in the routine so that you can prepare their things for school. Nurture independence in your child by encouraging realistic expectations of managing and organising themselves. The autumn term is a key time in education. It is the beginning of a new school year - a long term, where the foundations are laid for progress. It is also the time where schools and parents need to look to the future. Nearly all schools hold Open Events during the early part of the autumn term. It is always worth visiting schools that might be on your ‘potential radar’, even a few years ahead of possible application.

Children gain confidence and independence. Physical activity develops concentration and listening skills as well as the ability to follow instructions as they prepare for school.

For school-aged children cooperating as part of a team, learning how to deal with winning & losing, respect & honesty are all essential emotional, social & cognitive skills preparing them for the wider world.

Children who engage in sport from an early age tend to have a positive self image as sport encourages persistence, a mature attitude to both winning and losing and good sportsmanship. What better reason to get active!

Apple Pay pple Pay allows you to pay for things in shops by holding your iPhone or Apple Watch up to the contactless payment terminal.

You can also use Apple Pay on some websites and in some iOS apps. Apple Pay was first launched in the UK on 14 July 2015 and now a majority of UK banks offer Apple Pay to their customers. Since May 2016 you can spend over £30 using Apple Pay, but some stores are still limited to £30.

Any Apple device with a Touch ID fingerprint scanner will allow you to use Apple Pay, however you will also need a specific NFC antenna that is only built into certain Apple devices. iPhone 6 and above are compatible with Apple Pay, but you can use it through your watch connected with any iPhone 5 model. Since Sierra (latest Apple operating system) was launched

at the end of 2016 it is possible to pay for things online using your Mac in conjunction with the Touch ID sensor on your Apple iPhone or your Apple Watch.

To add a card to Apple Pay launch the Wallet app from your home screen. Tap on the + button in the top right corner of your screen and tap next. Now manually enter, or scan with the camera, your credit or debit card information. on the next page you will need to manually enter the card’s expiration date and the security code. Once you have agreed to all the terms and conditions you will need to verify your card through your bank, this could be an email, text or call. Your card should now be ready to use in your wallet.

To pay using Apple Pay on your iPhone, hold your iPhone up to the contactless payment terminal near the cash register and tap your Touch ID button to complete your purchase.

You don’t even need to wake up your iPhone or launch Wallet to use Apple Pay: your phone wakes up as soon as it gets in range of a terminal and initiates the payment process.

If you want to buy something with your Apple Watch you need to double-press the button underneath the Digital Crown.

When you press this button twice it will bring up your Default Apple Pay card.

Exploring the Galapagos Islands s a travel agent I have been lucky enough to visit some of the most exciting places in the world, but this was my first trip to the unique and wonderful Galapagos Islands.

I have watched programmes, seen pictures and heard colleagues tell stories of the Galapagos Islands so I was excited from the outset.

Ecuador is a beautiful country, with world-class cities and kind people. I was expecting the Galapagos to be amazing (which they were) but what surprised me most was how much I loved the rest of the country.

I started my journey in Quito, Ecuador’s capital.

The city is surrounded by mountains and snow-capped volcanoes. It is also at a high altitude, of 2850 metres so take it easy when you get there and drink lots of water. A guided walking tour took me around Quito. The city

itself sprawls, it really is large and with plenty to admire; ancient paved streets, colonial churches, buzzing plazas and regal government buildings. The tour ended with a walk up to El Panecillo, The Virgin of Quito Statue, which boasts impressive views across the whole city and a worthy photo-finish of the tour. Nearby Otavalo’s colourful markets and the Mindo Cloud Forest for butterflies, orchids and birds, provide a deeper insight into life in Ecuador.

After a short early morning flight I arrived in Baltra in the Galapagos Islands. I boarded the Odyssey, my vessel for the next 5 nights. The boat having just been refurbished was beautiful and only had 9 cabins so could easily travel around the small islands. The

food was delicious, fresh and we were never short of it! Bonds and friendships were quickly formed among guests as we all dined and explored the islands together.

However the Galapagos Islands are not all about your boat and the food! The unique nature and wildlife and amazing activities to interact with it are the real highlights. Every day we explored a different island, each very diverse. We visited the Charles Darwin Research Station to learn about the

was phenomenal. Myself and other guests grabbed a blanket and headed to the top deck one evening, to enjoy a nightcap with views of the Milky Way and other pretty star constellations. A perfect spot to reflect on the day’s activities.

Took a gentle hike across lava rocks to the Sierra Negra volcano. Visited beaches with nesting sea turtles, giant tortoises, crabs, penguins and much more.

Observed sharks (from the boat!), marine iguanas and colourful fish. The wildlife remains unworried by visitors and is one of the few places where little has changed since Darwin’s visit 200 years ago.

The Hebe

Greek Goddess of Youth ebes are versatile garden plants with bright foliage colours during winter and pretty flowers ranging from white through lilac and blue to deep purple through summer into autumn.

Can be grown in borders or pots and the blooms will encourage butterflies to visit. In fact, the Hebe is named after the Greek Goddess of Youth who served

nectar and ambrosia to the gods!

An evergreen plant with different species, Hebe plants are easy to grow and maintain and will thrive in most soil types and grow in both sunny and shady areas.

Hebe can be pruned to create a bushy plant, making sure not to cut back stems to bare branches, and is best done when the plant is in active growth from April to late July.

Ken from Marlow, having turned 100 years old, lives with his wife Elsie, who has advanced dementia. They have a live-in carer domiciliary support workers, also from Universal Care, which comes in three times a day to help with the hoist that Elsie needs to get in and out of

bed. Ken’s poor eyesight and hearing means he has become increasingly reliant on the service provided by us and feels that they are lucky to still be in their own home, considering Elsie’s condition. Ken said, “We did look at a couple of residential homes but they could only offer us separate bedrooms.

She wants to know that I’m going to be in the bed alongside her at night.” He went onto to say, “I came to the conclusion after looking at care homes that they weren’t for us and thank goodness we found Universal Care.

I don’t know what I would have done otherwise. I would have advertised for someone in the end, but then you just don’t know who you’re getting”. and friends through no fault of their own. You lose the motivation to change things for the better, and feel more hopeless as a result.

DINING REVIEW

Brasserie Blanc in Old Beaconsfield Dining-out sometimes involves a little research beforehand, perhaps using TripAdvisor or TableTalk, to get feedback on an expected dining experience.However, Brasserie Blanc has such an outstanding reputation - and was winner of the coveted Evolution Award earlier this year - that we can simply make a reservation with confidence and without much research or concern.

That is exactly how I felt when I booked it for an extra-large family birthday dinner for my husband in 2014, the year they opened.

Since that time, the restaurant has become one of Beaconsfield’s most popular dining establishments, and is regularly packed with bright-eyed guests, day and night. Some diners even lean over to neighbouring tables to converse mid-dinner something I usually only ever see in my native North America; but that is the convivial environment that is the hallmark of Raymond Blanc’s eateries.

The menu offers typically delicious French Brasserie food with classical dishes difficult to resist, alongside some contemporary offerings. The waitress guided us through the menu in her soft French accent, highlighting the market-fresh daily specials, making it sound most appealing.

I usually find that dining rooms with such high ceilings can seem

quite cold, offsetting the atmosphere, and the child in me wants to shout ‘Echo’!

But not here.The floor had a compact-warm cosy glow, and whoever has managed the lighting should get some kind of award.

The diners were a real mixed age-range, reflecting the local clientele: couples, young and old, inter-generational families, and a few groups of women having a ‘girls-night-out’.

I have returned to the restaurant in June this year for various Mums’ daytime events, and so forth. When I was asked to write a review of the restaurant, I invited my right-hand head chef, Robin, and personal assistant, Emelia to join me. I was still (belatedly) on vacation, and had difficulty getting back in time. Using Robin’s and Emelia’s notes I recorded what a fantastic and well-deserved night out it was: Upon arrival, restaurant manager, Daiva, came straight over and welcomed us without even a “tsk!

Tsk!” for our taxi-related tardiness!

We were shown to our table gracefully, and within a minute our waitress was at the table ready to receive our drinks order, which arrived in less than two minutes - most impressive, the 20 September / October 2017

DINING REVIEW a plus for presentation, as traditionally cut reminds me of nursery food and the tenderness required little effort in slicing, while the accompanying creamy buttery mash melted in my mouth, a contemporary and deliciously filling take on a classic.

Although what we had consumed so far was more than sufficient, we decided on a dessert of chocolate delice and pistachio soufflé. The garnish on the Delice brought back memories of Rce Krispies, with added Coco Pops, and consumng this creation was like licking my mother’s scented-velvet curtains - assuming Febreze marketed a chocolate version! Dark, rich, dense and smooth!

The restaurant floor was being worked skilfully: a master-class in awareness which many who don’t work in the trade fail to appreciate.

But, as a chef who has managed some of London’s top restaurants, I can assure you that serving this many orders without a slip-up is the sign of a brilliant floor manager. The staff noticed people and were always full of smiles.

They know their menus like the backs of their hands, a delight if you’re an indecisive diner, looking to experience new cuisine.

The Tartare, thankfully made with beef in most of the western world today, would have delighted Genghis Khan; but I digress. It was soft, cold, and purposefully without seasoning. The meat was mature-tasting and silky, and for the first time in my life I did not want to spoil it by adding unnecessary victuals that have often been called upon before; Tabasco , Worcester and the like. Brasserie Blanc has made me a purist. There was a little slick of capers and shallots, pared down the side, which I ate as a palette cleanser. The sour dough toasted with drawn

Pistachio soufflé - there was a great balance between chocolate and pistachio, and the flavour didn’t feel artificial at all. The texture was fluffy and light and perfectly matched the dark chocolate ice cream and,despite having eating two courses, I managed to finish the third, as it was so delicious. butter was a delicious addition.

Emelia had the cheese soufflé, and the key component of a traditional soufflé is a foamy-like texture which melted in her mouth. It did not disappoint. She had to remind herself that she was, in fact, eating an entree and not a cloud! The cheese-flavour was mild and not overbearing, and the sauce accompanying it was perfect.

Garnished with watercress, the cress added a perfect ‘earthiness’. The hake had a flawlessly-seasoned and blistered skin with its belly opaque. I could tell it had been rested properly before making the plate, and the citrus dressing surrounding it brought it all together.

Electrical Safety in the Home survey has revealed that two-thirds of the homes purchased in the last two years have not been checked for electrical safety Homebuyers can mistakenly believe a standard building survey will check the condition of the electrics.

There are several obvious items to check when purchasing a property such as the quality of the boiler, roof, damp and the structure - many of which will be picked up by surveys.

But if you want to check the electrics then you would need a separate inspection known as an EICR.

What is an EICR? An Electrical Installation Condition Report is a specialist electrical report that inspects

the condition of the wiring and accessories in a property to check they comply with UK electrical regulations (BS 7671).

They need to be carried out by approved electrical contractors, preferably by a contractor on the roll of the National Inspection Council Electrical Installation Contracting (NICEIC) and will involve a visual inspection and electrical testing to make sure all the mains wiring is safe and correct, and offer advice on any remedial works required.

Calling All Bookworms In Beaconsfield t is a long time since the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief (OXFAM) was founded in 1942 to help people in (occupied) Greece - remarkable enough in wartime. In those days and until relatively recently the High Streets were filled with new and second-hand bookshops.

It was a joy for many to browse the shelves for a hidden gem. Nowadays most second-hand bookshops have gone and replaced with charity shops. Most charity shops stock “airport novels” but at an Oxfam bookshop it is still possible to pick up interesting books.

Remy, The Oedi - Puss Complex Geoff Pearce-Gan

ur cat is psychotic!

No, really, ever since we had him as a kitten he really believes that my wife is his real mother and I am his actual father!

I have reached this conclusion after many years of careful observation, and as an explanation for an even more serious problem: he has an oedi puss complex. In the dictionary the Oedipus complex is the desire of a male child to ‘possess’ the mother and reject the father. Bingo! That is Remy exactly.

When my wife and I are in the house together, and Remy comes in, he always jumps on my wife’s lap NEVER mine, and starts kneading her as though searching for a teat. I might get a sideways and disapproving glance, a sort of warning to keep my distance, but that’s it.

Usually, if I approach him, he runs away and rarely lets me bend down and stroke him - oddly around four-thirty in the afternoon - about an hour or so before feeding time.

He is used to ‘mummy’ feeding him morning and afternoon and throughout the night on an hourly basis for more ‘bikkies’.

Furthermore, I must never be in the kitchen when he is being fed - seemingly, in case I steal his food; my wife has to shoo me away.

I sometimes I catch him sleeping on a cushion, and sneak up to stroke him.

When I’ve finished he gets up to furiously lick clean all those parts of him I have touched!

Seeing my distress my wife sometimes carries him to see me, and plonks him on my shoulder. But no, ‘I don’t want to see Daddy’, and he shoots off to the kitchen the second the ‘old fool’ releases his grip.

All this is very distressing and I despair of ever getting more affection from Remy. I’ve threatened to cut off his food supply (which always has to be the best and most expensive), but my wife threatened to throw me out of the house. So I’m stuck with a psychotic cat with oedi -puss complex.

Perhaps it is not Remy who needs to see a psychiatrist, perhaps it’s me. Meow.

Lungworm

a potential killer Did you know that there is now a new and serious threat to dogs from the lungworm Angiostrongylus vasorum?

It is spread by intermediate hosts including snails, slugs and frogs which thrive in warm wet weather – so typical of our recent summers.

What are the symptoms? In infected dogs adult lungworms live in the lung arteries and right ventricle of the heart. Here they lay eggs, which hatch into larvae and which in turn migrate into the airways of the lungs. Affected pets may show a range of symptoms including coughing, reluctance to exercise, weight loss, fi ts, diarrhoea and clotting problems.

So, What is the lifecycle? The larvae that have migrated to the lungs are in turn coughed up, swallowed and passed out in the dog’s faeces.

As the faeces break down, the larvae are then eaten by snails, slugs and frogs (as mentioned above).

This is a problem for dog owners since dogs may unwittingly swallow infected snails or slugs (or their slime trails) whilst exploring parks and gardens.

What do I need to do to keep my pet safe?

Many pet shop or supermarket worming preparations have no effect on lungworm.

Walk the MS Mile is Back! alk the MS Mile is the Chilterns MS Centre’s largest annual awareness and fundraising event. Since its inception in September 2015, it has raised £91,500 for the independent, Wendover-based charity and doubled the number of referrals received from people affected by multiple sclerosis (MS).

John Allen will be taking part in Walk the MS Mile in Beaconsfield on Saturday 16th September. John says “I was diagnosed with MS in 1995, I had little information about MS at the time but I discovered the Chilterns MS Centre and it changed everything. I received help and advice from the most amazing team of physios and just talking to other people going through the same experience is a great help”. Amanda Freedman is taking part in her local mile in High Wycombe “This was a shock but I received so much good advice from the Chilterns MS Centre. The place is full of really friendly staff and brilliant volunteers and is a very upbeat and cheery place to visit. I’ve made lots of friends who can relate to what I’m going through.”

The hundreds of people that have walked a mile for the charity have helped it deliver over 2,600 hours of

Although it costs the charity £1m to meet the needs of people with MS in the local community, it receives less than 10% of its funding from the NHS. MS is an unpredictable, often disabling disease that causes a wide range of symptoms including difficulties with mobility, balance, impaired vision and bladder problems.

Living with MS can be tough; although we don’t know the cause and we know no cure, we can treat many symptoms with physio, hydro, oxygen, complementary and occupational therapies. The Centre helps its members gain greater control over their MS, empowering them to lead happy and healthy lives and supporting their carers. This type of regular and long term support is not available on the NHS.

Many people with MS are unable to take part in physical sponsored challenges. Walking a mile – or using a walking frame or a motorised wheelchair – is something many people can and are pleased to do.

I’ve just been hired by a cafe as a temp covering the busy summer months.

My boss says that because I’m a temp, I’m not allowed to take any holiday.

Is this right?

Your boss is wrong - as an employee, you’re entitled to take paid holiday regardless of the contract you’re on.

While they can refuse to give you leave at specific times, they can’t refuse you holiday pay altogether. If you can’t take time off during your contract you should receive your holiday pay in a lump sum at the end.

How much holiday you’re allowed depends on the length of your contract, and how many hours you work.

First, check how many hours you’re entitled to by using gov.uk’s calculator. Save a copy of the calculation to refer to.

Then speak with your boss and explain that you are entitled to either annual leave or pay in lieu of your holiday - you can refer to your employment rights on the Citizens Advice website. Give them a copy of your holiday calculation too.

If your boss refuses to give you time off or holiday pay, put your complaint in writing to them.

Should your boss still not give way get in touch with ACAS, the free dispute resolution service that specialises in employment.
