Tips For Surviving Christmas Party Season • Try making every other drink a soft one • Avoid drinking in rounds to help you to drink at your own pace.

• Downsize your drinks - If you’re a beer drinker, make the units go further by drinking halves instead of pints. If you’re a wine drinker then opt for a smaller glass.

• Don’t drink on an empty stomach - A healthy meal before you go out, and snacks between drinks can help to slow down the absorption of alcohol, helping you stay in control. Fill up on a festive meal or Christmas snacks before your first drink – it slows the absorption of alcohol into your blood stream.

• Stick together. Make sure you leave your Christmas party in pairs or as a group. Don’t leave anyone behind. It’s not just women who need to watch out - lone men can be vulnerable too.

• Plan your journey while you’ve got a clear head.

If you’re going to get a taxi, make sure you book it or take a licensed black cab, rather than taking an unlicensed taxi you see on the street.

• Keep warm. Alcohol makes blood flow to the blood vessels near your skin and away from the core of your body. So while it feels like you’re warm because your skin is warm, your vital organs aren’t as warm as you might think they are. Date of *New* Official Christmas Tree Ceremony Announced! eaconsfield Town Council is excited to announce a new set of Christmas lights after a year of research and planning.

To mark the occasion they will be holding an official switching on ceremony in the Old Town of Beaconsfield on Saturday 24th November at 5.30pm, near the Reading Rooms.

The event will occur in the Old Town of Beaconsfield as it was decided that the New Town has great coverage with the Festival of Lights early in December.

We are also pleased to announce that The Honourable Jenifer Farncombe will be switching on the new lights.

At the event there will be various stands and stalls with good quality food and produce to create a Christmas market feel.

We hope this event will build into an annual late night shopping and Christmas Market that everyone will look forward to!

We also have an additional new feature in the Old Town with a large real Christmas tree to be planted in the centre of the

Old Town roundabout that joins London End, Wycombe End and Aylesbury End. This will create a wonderful traditional feel to the Old Town as you drive though this Christmas and of course will grow over the years to keep a focal point for the town.

Swan Windows Fly to Help Grenfell Victims n Tuesday 13th June 2017 the 24 storey tower block in North Kensington, London, went up in flames. It took the lives of 72 people and caused devastation to the whole community.

Nick Knowles and his team on BBC’s television programme – DIY SOS Big Build – Grenfell helped with the programme’s biggest and longest build – by constructing a new home for the Dale Youth Boxing Club which was destroyed in the fire and also the build of a two storey community centre.

Swan Windows, a family-run business based in Rickmansworth, helped along side the DIY SOS team to help with these important community projects.

A year to top them all for Beaconsfield High School eaconsfield High School will finish this year in style, after racking up an impressive number of achievements to position itself as the top school in the county!

Most recently the school discovered that it ranks within the top 0.5% of all secondary state schools in the UK for its Progress 8 score, taking 18th position. Progress 8, which was introduced in 2016, aims to capture the progress that pupils make from the end of primary school to the end

of secondary school. It was designed to encourage schools to offer a broad and balanced curriculum at KS4 (GCSE).

Under the helm of Headteacher Rachel Smith the school has jumped from 130th position to 18th in just one year, and Rachel Smith puts this down to exceptional staff. “My team is absolutely outstanding; an amazing collective of highly capable and inspirational teachers, coupled with thorough and diligent support staff, who subscribed to our vision and the ethos we have instilled since I took the

Headship in 2015.”

In the last year, the school has also celebrated being recognised as an Exceptional School (the equivalent of receiving two consecutive Outstanding evaluations by Ofsted) and achieving Governor Mark for its governing body’s best practice and exceptional standards. Time To Face The Music was delighted to meet Frederick McCarthy Forsyth - Freddie, to his friends and opera singer Melissa Alder.

Freddie was born in Ashford, Kent in August 1938 and now resides in Jordans village close to Seer Green.

Awarded a CBE for his writing, Frederick is a former spy and was a journalist before turning to fiction. His most celebrated work is, “The Day of the Jackal” - which became a successful Hollywood film. His other works (some also filmed) include; “The Odessa File”, “The Fourth Protocol”, and “The Dogs of War”. The Veteran writer has recently launched his exciting new thriller, “The Fox”.

A few years ago, whilst listening to music in his car, Freddie realised years of commemoration were coming, recalling the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War and its dreadful slaughter.

This will be followed by the centenaries of World War II, the Korea Conflict, the Falklands, Iraq, Afghanistan and the (seemingly) endless torrent of sacrifices made by armed forces worldwide. He felt it was appropriate to write a lament.

Although there were several commemorative music-pieces in existence there was no sung lament for the fallen that he could recall. Over a period of a month he composed a sixteen-line, four-verse poem to fill the need which he felt should be sung, rather than read. For a year and a half he tried to find a piece of music that could be ‘matched’ to the words of his poem, but failed. Then fate took a hand.

At Seer Green village church he heard the voice of Melissa Alder, a pure soprano from the Royal Opera House, who also directs the village church choir. Melissa told me she first met Freddie when she put on a concert at the Church to raise money to fix the roof. She and the church choir sang and Freddie offered to read the preface of his then new book: “The Kill List”. Together, they raised more than enough money to fix the roof and she said, ‘We no longer need to put a bucket on the organ when it rains!’

Melissa introduced Freddie to world-class music-arranger, Gareth Ellis Williams. It was Gareth who came up with the melody, using violin, harp and pipes to create a haunting, plaintive and evocative piece of music. Frederick told me, ‘I was so delighted with the result: it’s the fitting tribute I had imagined.’

We remember all those brave soldiers who fought in battle for our country

Dedicated to those who fought in World War 1 and all the wars past and present, losing their lives in the process, we will remember you forever. Frederick Forsyth wrote this in honour of soldiers who died in battle away from their homeland. RIP.

While we who are left tread so soft up above You are home from the fight, from the clamour, from the danger, Laid in the breast of the land that you love…

When you first marched to the colours you were young and oh so handsome.

You pulled on your badge standing straight, standing tall.

And you gave to us your promise your sworn word of honour.

And in your last moment… You gave us your all.

So sleep Fallen Soldier, here in your Homeland Wrapped in our flag until when On some far distant morn you’ll hear His last reveille Then you and your comrades… Will march once again.

The War to End All Wars here are 80 names of those killed in World War 1 listed on Beaconsfield War Memorial, the majority from Beaconsfield families, and all having a connection to the Town.

Those killed were fathers, brothers, husbands and sons and it is fitting that they are remembered this year as we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ending of “The War to end all Wars”.

As part of the Town’s Programme of Commemorative Events, Beaconsfield & District Historical Society has put together a display in the Library. As well as listing the names of those killed, where they lived and where possible, their occupations before the war, there is information on Francis Grenfell V.C., who lived at Wilton Park

and won the first Victoria Cross awarded in the conflict. He was killed in Flanders in 1915 aged 35.

His twin brother, Riversdale, had already been killed the year before.

In 1921 the war memorial was unveiled by Lord Grenfell and was dedicated by Edward Domett Shaw, the first Bishop of Buckingham who had, himself, lost three sons in the war. In 1934 due to increased traffic and the construction of the roundabout, it was decided that the memorial should be moved and it was relocated to its present position on the green near to St Mary’s Church in 1936. Today, few people notice that there is always a light at the top of the war memorial, one of the few in the country to have this feature.

The display will be at the library from 5th November until 15th November.

Seer Green’s global girl returns to open local family gym fter six years spent working abroad, one of Seer Green’s local girls is coming home in September to set up her own fitness business.

Rachel Harling, whose parents still live in Seer Green, attended Seer Green School and Beaconsfield High School before going to Southampton University where she gained a degree in German and Spanish.

After 3 years in New York working in financial communications, Rachel did a 180-degree career change into personal training and fitness. She moved to Singapore in 2015 where she joined the country’s largest independent

fitness company, UFIT. Initially employed as a personal trainer, Rachel was soon appointed manager of the group’s flagship gym in the heart of Singapore’s central business district.

Now, together with her partner, Frazer McArdell, she is bringing her knowledge and expertise back to Seer Green and the Chalfont’s with the launch of their own gym in early October. Named ‘The Fit House’, it will be situated on the second floor of Chalfont St Peter Cricket Club.

Rachel’s aim is to make The Fit House a family gym which becomes an important part of the local community. It will provide services for the whole family, where mums and dads can bring

the kids to enjoy a wide variety of fitness based activities.

Rachel is an experienced pre- and post-natal exercise trainer and built up a large following in Singapore.

Frazer is a highly experienced rugby coach (Singapore National Men’s coach) and an ex-college teacher.

Rachel brings her pregnancy related and ladies specific experience to The Fit House, whilst Frazer will concentrate on kids fitness and sports performance (including holiday camps). The Fit House will also offer a full range of classes and personal training.

The most wonderful thing about making salt dough decorations, is that it is a great activity for all ages to participate in and the final product is something that you can keep and treasure for many years to come.

My favourite dough recipe

with the wet paint is always fun.

2 cups plain flour 1 cup salt 1 cup water 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 tablespoon oil

Following a recipe and instructions, counting out cups, stirring and mixing and just being able to spend time on a collaborative project with an adult are all meaningful and important experiences too!

1. Place all ingredients into a large bowl.

2. Mix all ingredients together.

3. Knead dough until smooth.

4. Store in an air tight container

6. Bake on a very low heat for 1 hours or until firm

In addition, the malleable properties of play dough make it fun for investigation and exploration as well as secretly building up strength in all the tiny hand muscles and tendons, helping children with pencil and scissor control.

7. When dry - paint the decorations, adding glitter

his month we ask Your Doctor’s Dr Riccardo Di Cuffa how to protect and boost our immune system as we head towards the colder months.

Q. How can I boost my immune system this winter?

A: Reduced sunlight can disrupt our sleeping cycles, reduce our desire to exercise and can affect our vitamin D intake. Make sure you go out into the natural light every day and ensure you have a good diet packed with healthy fruit, vegetables and fibre, and give a wide berth to unhealthy comfort foods. The three major antioxidant vitamins are beta-carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin E and they can be found particularly in purple, blue, red, orange, and yellow fruits and vegetables.

Smoking also affects your immune system so get support to help quit if you are a smoker.

Q. How does a flu vaccination work?

A: Flu vaccines work by producing antibodies to fight off the disease without 20 November / December 2018

infecting us with the actual disease. The vaccine can identify the disease if it were to come into contact with our body and will release the antibodies to fight it off. For children, a flu nasal spray is usually issued which contains live but weakened flu viruses that do not cause the flu.

This helps the child build up their immunity to flu, without symptoms.

Q. Can you catch the flu from a flu vaccine?

A: The vaccine contains inactivated flu viruses, making it near impossible for it to give you the flu. The location of where the injection was given may feel sore and some people may experience a slight temperature and aching muscles for a few days, but it is well worth having the flu vaccine to protect you.

Q. What should I do if I get the flu?

A: If you get the flu, it is important to rest, stay as comfortable as possible, drink plenty of water, take a paracetamol or ibuprofen to lower your temperature and ease the aches and pains if needed. If you feel as though you need to seek advice, visit your local pharmacist who

can provide treatment advice and recommend flu remedies.

If your symptoms haven’t improved after a week, call 111 or speak to your GP. Q. Who should get the flu vaccine?

A: You are eligible for the flu vaccine if you are 65 years of age or older, are pregnant, are a carer, or have certain medical conditions such as heart and liver disease or respiratory diseases like asthma. Children are eligible if they are over six months with a long-term health condition, aged between two and three years old, or are in reception or years one to four at school.

It is important to remember you are not just protecting yourself. By getting vaccinated we are preventing the spread of flu and helping stop those around us from becoming ill.

Understanding Inheritance Tax have extolled the virtues of Wills in these pages before, so you hopefully know that you should have one and where to turn to if you need to get one.

This time, I thought it might be useful to set out a summary of some basics around inheritance tax: • Inheritance tax is currently charged at 40% on the net value of your estate above the relevant tax-free thresholds (called nil rate bands). Net value means that debts and liabilities are deducted.

• The standard nil rate band applicable to all estates is currently £325,000.

• A new nil rate band for residences was introduced on 6 April 2017.

It is currently £125,000 and will increase by £25,000 on 6 April 2019 to £150,000 and a final £25,000 on 6 April 2020 to £175,000.

• The residence nil rate band, as it is known, is one of the most complex

pieces of inheritance tax legislation but in simple terms it is available only if you are leaving your home to your children or grandchildren.

If your estate as a whole is worth more than £2million then the available residence nil rate band is progressively reduced by £1 for every £2 by which the estate value exceeds that £2million.

• Inheritance between spouses is always free of tax so does not use up any nil rate bands. Unused nil rate bands can be transferred to the estate of the second spouse to die.

This could allow a standard nil rate band of £650,000 and double the

residence nil rate band (so currently £250,000) in certain circumstances.

Christmas Spice Rub for Stiff Joints oswellia & Commiphora joint rub contains two traditional Christmas spices, Boswellia Serrata (Frankincense) and Commiphora Molmol (Myrrh).

The Christmas spice joint rub was found to be as successful at reducing pain and inflammation caused by arthritis and stiff joints as conventional NSAIDs, according to a trial by a two UK doctors.

The two spices have a long medical history of relieving the inflammation associated with rheumatic and osteopathic forms of arthritis as well as other forms of joint inflammation.

The first UK trial using this unique combination was carried out by Dr Robert Jacobs, a GP from Devon, on 30 of his arthritic patients.

Dr Jacobs says: ““In my limited experience of ‘no-drug’ joint rubs, such as tiger balm that is very popular, this one appeared to be significantly more effective for the treatment of joint inflammation either from arthritis or from strain or trauma to the joint.”

He concluded that: “The spice joint rub had a statistically significant effect both on the pain and stiffness caused by arthritis. Of those on the trial, 83% stated that they felt the cream helped them with their arthritis.”

Eyesight and Driving.... ood vision when driving depends on many factors. We have to be able to see clearly without glare and reflections and also with contrast at night.

Many of us know that you need to read a number plate at 20m and have an adequate field of vision, but did you know that driving without glasses invalidates your insurance?

The RAC says accidents caused by poor driver vision are estimated to cause 2,900 casualties each year. If you had an accident and were not wearing your driving glasses at the time, you could face up to ÂŁ1000 fine, penalty points or even disqualification.

So how do you ensure you are as safe as possible when driving?

Have your eyes tested at least every 2 years or sooner if you notice a problem or have any concerns.

Check your glasses have the correct lenses and are kept smudge and dirt free.

Keep a spare pair of glasses in the car. This is important if you drive outside the UK where it is often the law to carry a second pair but also if you wear contact lenses.

Also keep your windscreen and mirrors clean to avoid light scatter.

With roads becoming more congested and more time

spent behind the wheel, driving in bad weather or low light can be particularly difficult.

With new cars often having new brighter headlights and vehicles like SUVs being higher off the ground, glare is increasingly more troublesome.

hold a fashion show to remember in aid of local children’s cancer research charity - William’s Fund n Wednesday 17th October Jak & Liza held a charity fashion show in their store.

Models included Sam Kenwright (owner of Jak & Liza) plus her mum who showcased their new winter collection whilst raising over £1000 for William’s Fund - a local childhood cancer research charity.

The whole event came together seamlessly due to the amazing support of local businesses in Beaconsfield. Skiing - It’s never too late to learn – or improve!

y first memories of skiing was on a school trip to Switzerland. Many of the children with me had already skied, so I felt out of my depth on a slope - too advanced for me!

instructors who will give you the confidence to take those first ski steps. If you are a very competent skier there are private or group classes to help improve certain aspects of your skiing.

I had little confidence and had to wear hideously uncomfortable boots with apparatus attached to them which looked more suitable for propping up a garden fence! I looked on with envy at some of the skiers and secretly wished I could glide down the mountain with such grace and ease!

But they’d all had lessons before they went away. Since then, I’ve been on a handful of skiing holidays and only in the last year have I grown to like it more and more.

I met some lovely ladies in my ski group and there was a mixed bag of experience; one who hadn’t skied for 35 years, another who had learnt in the last year, one that wanted to keep up with her husband and children and wanted to improve. It was great fun and our instructor helped improve our technique and confidence!

We are very fortunate that the Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead is on our doorstep.

It is the main indoor ‘real’ snow-slope that serves London, M4 corridor and the south of England. The 160-metre slope of ‘pure snow’, with over 150 ski-instructors who teach at varying levels of competence. So, there is an opportunity for everyone to learn or improve! Ski-wear can be hired, gloves can be purchased and boots and skis are provided when using the ski slope so there is no excuse not to give it a ‘go’!

I relished the opportunity (with slight nervousness) to attend a couple of 2-hour, ladies-only ski sessions. As I had had some experience of skiing I found myself in a level six group. But don’t worry if you are a total beginner, or inexperienced, as there is a nursery ski slope and very patient 36 November / December 2018

Having the Snow Centre on your doorstep is also a great chance to get warmed up for the ski season and hit the slopes with confidence and great technique! The Snow Centre also organises their own ski holidays with a ski instructor from the centre - great if you are on your own or want a fun group of people to ski with. The holidays can be in groups of around 6 or as many as 40! If you have children then of course it’s the perfect time to teach them how to ski. Private lessons start from 3 years old and group lessons from 4 years old and above. There is something new and exciting for everyone!

again depends on the group travelling. For a family with small children it’s best to minimise the transfer time between airport and resort.

Hiring a car can be a good idea and travelling by train is worth considering.

Last but not least, do purchase appropriate ski insurance, and check the resort weather before you travel. With a good group and careful planning, the holiday will be a success and a great time will be had by all.

Not all gifts at Christmas need to be wrapped up common question from our clients: If I give money to my children, will they be taxed on it?

There is a misconception that you cannot give more than £3,000 in any tax year, but this is not the case. The fact is you can give any amount without triggering any kind of tax charge. Where a tax implication does arise is if the person giving the gift dies within the seven-year period from the date of the transaction.

It is however vital to understand that if death does occur within this 7-year period, no tax charge will be incurred by the children nor will they have to return the gift. All that happens is all or part of the gift will be nominally brought back into the estate for the purpose of calculating any inheritance tax liability. Gifts from income may be deemed as immediately outside an estate if the amount given does not have a detrimental impact on the value of the 42 November / December 2018

donor’s estate. In other words, gifts from ‘surplus’ income.

For those concerned by the seven-year rule, there are other opportunities available.

Business Relief (BR) is the name given to a tax incentive where the government allow the value of an investment to be deemed outside of an individual’s estate after the investment has been held for just two years (and still held at date of death). This is becoming a very popular method of inheritance tax planning, the main attraction being the investment stays in the investors control, so no gifting takes place and here are the other features: Speed – Inheritance tax benefits are achieved if BR qualifying assets of investments are held for just 2 years at date of death.

Control – Investor retains control of and access to their investments.

Flexibility – Options for survivor on partner’s death.

Simplicity – No legal structures or medical underwriting.

Although this type of opportunity is not new, historically the investment content has leaned towards the higher end of the investment scale and this has never been particularly appealing to investors in retirement. We now however have access to lower risk products which aim to target capital preservation, which is how this sector has now become so popular with investors looking to mitigate against inheritance tax.

Save our Green Belt Peter Foster

n a few months time Beaconsfield could change for ever! We need your support in fighting the imminent release of roughly 117 hectares of Green Belt land at the edge of town 170 football pitches - to redevelopment. The “Save Our Green Belt Campaign” has been running for six months and perhaps you attended one of our very successful meetings about what is going on.

Many of you have signed petition mandates, but we also need donations for the expert advice and evidence we need to present our case. Other local towns facing similar planning issues have raised nearly five times as much as we have, prompting the CEO of the largest developer in the area to taunt us by saying, “Beaconsfield people will sign petitions but not give any money”!

We know this to be an unjustified slight and that Beaconsfield people care just as much about their town as other towns in the area.

You might not be familiar with the land under threat; but you pass it every day. It ‘frames’ our town surrounding Wilton Park and runs along the Amersham Road and dual-carriageway to 44 November / December 2018

the motorway. The development of the ex-MOD base, Wilton Park, will be going ahead once the developers and the District Council agree having 40% ‘affordable housing’ (or, perhaps not!), but the rest of the surrounding land is all that stops us from effectively joining up with Seer Green and expanding the town by 35%. But - and this is an important ‘but’ – the impact of developing this land will be felt across many facets of Beaconsfield life: – massive traffic delays, increase in class sizes in local schools and the ability to get doctors’ appointments lengthened, and much more.

The local air quality will suffer, and travel times in the town will be horrendous at peak times; the increased demand for parking spaces. The relief road will no longer give

relief, and roads such as Ledborough Lane and the Seeley Estate area will see a lot more traffic. If the proposals receive the go ahead, there is no going back. Your town will have to live with the consequences. The Beaconsfield Society has offered to work with the Town Council on this but this has been rejected, and the District has resorted to unhelpful statements attempting to discredit our hard work – all very disappointing.

With financial backing we can go a long way to getting your voice heard on the proposed changes.

To help the hard work already underway from volunteers the Beaconsfield Society will need donations amounting to an average of around £50 from each of us. Below are details of how you can contribute.

The Enid Blyton legacy continues at Bekonscot Cathy Sturrock

nid Blyton was born in 1897 in East Dulwich, and became a prolific writer of childrens’ stories, completing over 700 books during her lifetime.

The stories have been translated into over ninety languages. Some of her best-known works include “The adventures of Noddy”, “The Famous Five”, “The Secret Seven” and “Tales of Malory Towers”.

Enid attended school in Kent, where her love of writing began, and her experiences are believed to have provided the inspiration for her “St Clare’s” and “Malory Towers” series. She began as a teacher and governess, and her first book, “Child Whispers”, was a 24-page collection of poems published in 1922.

Commercial success came in the 1930s with the publication of “The Adventures of the

Wishing Chair” (1937). “The Enchanted Wood” (1939) series included “The Magic Faraway Tree” (1943) , and “The Folk of he Faraway Tree” (1946). Between 1942 and 1963 Enid wrote twenty-one “Famous Five” adventures, and fifteen “Secret Seven” stories, as well as many tales of “Noddy in Toyland”.

Enid Blyton moved from Old Thatch in Bourne End to Green Hedges in Beaconsfield in 1938. She always wrote from memory, with little research, or planning. Her imagination flowed directly onto paper via a small portable typewriter, balanced on her knees. At the peak of her writing she was publishing up to 50 books with 6,000 – 10,000 words a day! Enid was friends with Roland Callingham, the founder of

Bekonscot Model Village, and in 1946 she wrote a short story entitled “The Enchanted Village” which described a visit to Bekonscot with her niece and nephew. She remained at Green Hedges until shortly before her death in 1968. The house was then (sadly) demolished to make way for a development of new houses - aptly named Blyton Close.

In 1997, on the centenary of Enid Blyton’s birth, a scale model of Green Hedges was unveiled at Bekonscot by her daughter, Gillian. The model includes a figure sitting on a garden bench with a typewriter on her knees, and a group of 4 children and a dog about to embark on a famous adventure! In 2013 a member of the Beaconsfield Society was told by a retired builder that he had rescued the sundial from Enid Blyton’s house.

It was was purchased by Bekonscot in 2014 and after two years of painstaking renovation by Dr Frank King (a member of the Sundial Society), it now stands in the Enid Blyton garden at Bekonscot, mounted on a specially-built column replicating those seen at Green Hedges.

The works of Enid Blyton are not without controversy (especially from the PC brigade) but nevertheless remain in the best-seller lists, proving their enduring appeal to children (and grown-ups!) of all generations. The Famous Five are even currently promoting Western Railways on TV advertisements!
