his is an exciting issue for me and for Beaconsfield! It’s my second year anniversary and I maintain this is a magazine for you, the readers; residents and business owners in Beaconsfield.

This year, Bekonscot is celebrating its 90th anniversary, it’s the 750th Charter Fair. I interview Dick Smith - our town crier who celebrates his 50th year and in the spotlight this issue is Alex Dunlop, established business owner and Central Ward councillor for Beaconsfield parish council (p28) Please support Bekonscot’s exclusive “Out of Hours” charity event on Friday June 16th (p51) and win something special for your father in our fabulous competition (p52) I’m so excited to be invited to the Mayors reception at Beaconsfield’s Town Hall in May. Beaconsfield Community Bus Launched by the Mayor he new Beaconsfield Community Bus truly is a community initiative.

First suggested by residents in 2015, developed by Beaconsfield Town Council, Alfriston School & the Beaconsfield Advisory Centre. Most importantly the volunteers have made this idea a reality, thanks go to the drivers Ann, Anne, Debbie, Sarah, Paul, Andy, Douglas, Jonathan and Paul who also organises the rota. Thanks to our conductors Deborah, Dieter and Graeme.

a ride for everyone else. It’s a great way to get about and avoids parking in town.

Residents are also able to Hail and Ride along the route.

The Bus operates on Monday and Wednesdays from 9am3pm, except bank holidays.

The route starts at Alfriston School and comes down past Bekonscot Model Village into the new town and then loops to Holtspur and through the old town and back down to the New Town. It has already made a difference with over 250 rides taken so far and a number of regular customers.

‘We are pleased to support this trial to study the demand for such a community bus service. We look forward to the views of the town.’ said Anita Cranmer, Mayor of Beaconsfield Town Council.

‘Thanks go to all those that have helped and supported this trial, and we look forward to the rest of the community getting on board’.

Guide to the New Unitary Authority n April 2020, a brand new Unitary Authority in Buckinghamshire will be set up. The existing County Council and all four District Councils will be abolished and replaced by replaced by “The Buckinghamshire Council” Why is this happening?

It will be cost effective, more efficient and will save the taxpayers money. The aim is to bring together the best skills and expertise from the current five councils and deliver the best service possible.

Where will the new Buckingham Council be based?

residents and Unitary Councillors to achieve the best outcomes for their areas.

Localism will become a reality.

A central unit will remain in Aylesbury to take care of countywide issues such as Adult Social Care, Children’s Services and Education and Skills.

How will this affect you?

There will be no immediate changes to services. Do not worry! Your bins will be collected as normal, the same services will remain, and everything you rely on day to day will carry on. You will see one website for all information and have one telephone number for query direction. Never again will you ask, “Which Council is responsible? “There will be one Council.

When will this happen?

A Government order will put this in place very soon and there is a timetable culminating in the new Buckinghamshire Council in April 2020.There is an interim structure in place to make sure that planning and delivery are the best they could be for us all.

uman Story Theatre are performing their critically-acclaimed, bitter-sweet play about a mother facing dementia with the help of her daughter.

Connie’s Colander, written by Gaye Poole, is in libraries and community spaces this May & June. During Dementia Action Week Connie’s Colander will be popping up at The Beaconsfield School hosted by NHS Buckinghamshire Clinical Commissioning Group and the Simpson Centre & Penn Surgery PPG, 23 May 7.30pm.

The hour-long play traces the evolving relationship throughout their lives, and the impact of Connie’s Alzheimer’s.

n the 12th and 13th February 2019 The Beaconsfield School had an OFSTED inspection. In all areas the inspectors found the school to be GOOD. The team highlighted many positive areas such as;

During the two day inspection the team visited over 50 lessons. Spoke to students, members of staff and governors. Parents view were also taken into account through an on line survey. The team agreed with the schools self-evaluation and where confident that we had identified our areas of development.

• Pupils say that they value teachers’ advice in identifying the progress they are making.

• Teachers are wholehearted in their desire for pupils to achieve well. Relationships between teachers and pupils are constructive and are built on trust and mutual respect. This enables pupils to have the confidence to ask for help and support when they are stuck or unsure.

• Pupils conduct themselves in an orderly manner.

They are welcoming, self-assured and act in a polite and respectful way. Lunchtimes are calm, with groups of pupils engaged in friendly conversation.

• The majority of pupils display a positive attitude towards their learning. They are keen to succeed and value the efforts made by their teachers in 8

The Hidden Health Crisis:

What does it really mean for today’s children?

018 was the year that experts pronounced children’s lack of sleep as a ‘hidden health crisis’, after NHS England revealed year on year sleep disorder admissions rose by 30% in 2018 due to a combination of excessive screen time before bed, soaring obesity levels and a mental health crisis affecting under 16’s.

The statistics are worrying; not only can health problems be among the contributing factors to a lack of sleep, but, can also be outcomes and have serious consequences on: Mood It’s well known that children can wake up feeling grumpy following a poor night’s sleep.

But sleep deprivation can lead to more serious consequences.

The National Institute of

Mental Health has shown that children who experience inadequate sleep are more vulnerable to developing depression and anxiety disorders in later life.

Obesity Obesity has been reported as a possible influencing factor for ‘the hidden health crisis’ but it’s a two-way street; inadequate or intermittent sleep can have long-term consequences.

Children aged between three and five, who aren’t meeting the recommended 10-12 hours’ sleep per night are at an increased risk of becoming overweight at age seven.

psychological and physical wellbeing and it is vital to place emphasis on good bedtime habits at home, in communities and in schools.

Reducing Screen Time Before Bed Jayne from Calm Little Minds says, ‘It is important to recognise that not all children sleep well. With this in mind we need to be thinking about a consistent bedtime routine with reduced screen time, which can include story time, using a book, rather than a screen”. Gadget use is a growing concern and not only are children affected by over-use but adults are too.

The blue light emitted from gadget screens tells our brain to stay alert and active, whereas this does not happen when we read a book, which helps us to switch off and relax to sleep. The NHS recommends screen time to be less than 2 hours a day, for children to have 9-11 hours of quality sleep.

Children are already growing up in a pressured, chaotic, digital world and a lack of sleep can cause them to be irritable, stressed and lack concentration. Over time, a lack of good quality sleep can impact on a child’s mental health, leading to behavioural, cognitive or emotional issues, such as anxiety or anger problems.

Good quality sleep will benefit a child’s ability to have better concentration, function better cognitively, make positive decisions, have more energy for the day and have improved, well rounded mental health and well being.

Fend off exam stress ith exams looming large, children and teenagers across the country will no doubt be feeling the pressure to study hard and do well.

Exam time is understandably a worrying time for young people, and they are of course important, but equally important is that your child keeps things in perspective, and this, wise parent, is where YOU come in. Reassure them you will be proud of them whatever the outcome, providing they give them their best shot.

You can also help to stack the odds in their favour by ensuring they eat healthily and by encouraging them to make lifestyle tweaks that will them to stay calm and focused.

Pay close attention to their diet. When feeling stressed it’s all too easy just to grab something on the go, a chocolate bar or a quick snack, when really our body is crying out for the nutrients it needs to help it cope with the extra pressure. Wholegrain carbohydrates (brown bread, brown pasta) will give them long-term energy without causing sugar highs and lows and cravings.

The B vitamins help to support the nervous system and vitamin C supports the adrenal glands, so increasing your supply of these should make you feel better. B vits are found naturally in potatoes, bananas, lentils, peppers, tempeh, beans and brewer’s yeast (Marmite and Vegemite are excellent sources), and vitamin C is of course found 18 May / June 2019

in most fresh fruit and veg, including broccoli, kale, peppers, oranges and strawberries.

Other essential nutrients include magnesium (found naturally in pumpkin seeds, Brazil nuts and spinach) for the nervous system and iron for energy. Liver is an obvious food source of iron but not for everyone. Sardines, figs and apricots are good alternatives.

Give stimulants such as tea, coffee, chocolate, cola and energy drinks a swerve, as they can aggravate stress. Good old-fashioned water will help to keep the brain hydrated, and there are plenty of tea alternatives to choose from including chamomile, lemon verbena and green tea. Bambu, caro and barley cup are good coffee substitutes.

Herbal remedies can also help. Passiflora has been used for centuries as a mild sedative and is particularly beneficial when mixed with other restorative herbs such as Avena sativa. Together they help to combat both the physical and mental symptoms of stress, helping to prolong sleep time, relieve muscle tension and alleviate mild anxiety.

You may also wish to try Jan de Vries Emergency Essence, which uses a variety of flower extracts to help bring the mind back to a balanced state.

It can be especially useful for exam stress.

And some top exam tips: encourage your child to take regular breaks from revision.

There are no hard and fast rules about how best to revise, but regular short breaks can help to improve concentration.

Make sure they get regular exercise. Structured relaxation techniques such as yoga can be particularly helpful but even a brisk walk will provide a healthy distraction.

And finally, make sure they are getting enough rest. Between 7 and 8 hours of sleep a night is generally considered healthy but make sure they get their 7 hours during the night, as opposed to sleeping in until late morning – it does make a difference.

This year, we are helping to celebrate 750 years of the Charter Fair and the Beaconsfield Society’s event is part of the Beaconsfield Community Festival which takes place between 4th-19th May. Beaconsfield Now! will have a historical theme with medieval headdresses being sold to raise money for Better Connected Beaconsfield and our usual Maypole Dancing to provide the cuteness factor! We will have performances from local schools and theatre groups, traditional games and activities provided by stallholders - plenty for the whole family. hiltern Shakespeare Company (CSC) is to stage A Midsummer Night’s Dream in June 2019 at Hall Barn, Beaconsfield.

CSC is an amateur body, with a highly respected reputation in the Chilterns and Thames Valley area and 2019 marks the 30th anniversary of performances at Hall Barn. Surplus funds from the 2019 production will be donated to High Wycombe First Responders.

Performances are staged amidst glorious parkland, with the actors performing in the open air, whilst the audience sits on raked seating protected from the elements by a tented awning. To add to the occasion, many members of the audience picnic in the park before the play. Those who do not wish to bring their own food can pre-order delicious picnics provided by Splendiferous (order via Chiltern Shakespeare when you book your tickets). A fully licensed refreshment marquee will also be on site.

Piano Powers Brains cience shows that learning to play the piano boosts brain growth – especially the Corpus Callosum (CC), the Central Connection between the right and left hemispheres of the brain.

Improved inter-hemisphere communication translates into greater efficiency of the frontal cortex – the brain’s executive Command and Control Centre. A more connected CC improves memory, learning, decision-making and intelligence. It’s also interesting to note that the CC is the largest white matter structure in the brain, only found in placental mammals – and Einstein had a huge one – discovered because he donated his brain to science.

Everyone benefits, but children find it easier and have the most to gain from learning to play the piano, ideally starting at age 6 or 7. I have taught students from age 5 to 75 – and the key in all cases is to make it fun – motivating and inspiring based on the music we love as individuals – what most lights up our brain!

The Corpus Callosum, Central & Side Views:

Live images of brain function show that music literally lights up the brain. The phenomenon is even more profound when playing, rather than just listening. Learning any musical instrument requires significant coordination of the hands, and brain hemispheres – none more than the piano, which equally engages both hands and all ten digits. Further, learning another language benefits the developing brains of children – creating more flexibility for learning further languages. Music is of course a universal language – arguably the language of the soul!

It is notably harder for adults to learn the piano, than it is for children. Adults especially struggle with hand coordination. However, adults benefit from learning to play, even late in life – from documented reductions in stress, anxiety, depression, fatigue, and even dementia.

A final point worth making is that learning to play the piano is also great for kids with special needs. I have taught children with significant learning disabilities – hearing from parents and schools that their performance in maths and reading improved enormously after only a few months of lessons. I am also especially fond of an autistic child I’m presently teaching. According to his mum, “My child is no savant, just a child who has autism and dyspraxia. Learning the piano has done wonders for his self-esteem, coordination and concentration.”

To elevate the space in your bedroom and to add some texture and warmth, include a large, stylish headboard. You may be partial to upholstered designs or prefer to inject a bolder style using woven screens, murals or wood finishes. Whatever takes

your fancy, ensure it provides comfort. Wash your walls in soft illumination to set the mood with dimmable accent lighting using table lamps, wall sconces or floor lamps. Makes things interesting and suspend low hanging pendant lights from the ceiling at each side of the bed which serve as task lighting for reading. It makes a refreshingly contemporary alternative to bedside lamps.

For that 5-star quality luxury feel, treat yourself to luxurious bed linen. If you are a savvy shopper like myself, pick up top quality linen in the sales or outlet stores.

The rule of thumb when it comes to collapsing on soft sheets is to choose 100 per cent cotton or linen with a thread count less than 350. Layering texture with soft mohair or cashmere throws, silk bed canopies or plush floor rugs embellishes your bedroom design.

We all need that one special place to escape for some TLC so why not do the same for your bedroom.

Get a Survey When You are Buying a Property hen you are buying a house, remember that your instructed solicitor is acting for you to scrutinise and advise on the title of the property.

The legal picture, as it were.

Your solicitor does not inspect the physical property and cannot advise on its structure. Legalities are all about the land on which the house is built, not necessarily the building itself.

You have been to see the house when you viewed it before making your offer to buy it, so you will know what it looks like, whether there were any cracks in the wall, whether there was a roof tile missing or whether there are any suspect damp patches. Those are just the visuals though, and unless you are a surveyor yourself, you won’t necessarily know what is beneath the surface and whether there should be any cause for concern.

A good solicitor will always recommend that you invest in a full structural survey, and can often point you in the direction of suitable surveyors if you don’t know where to start. It might prove a costly mistake to think that paying for a full structural survey is too expensive as the reality is that unless defects or repair requirements are dealt with prior to exchange of contracts, nothing can be done at a later date about commensurate price reductions, the seller effecting repairs or you pulling out of the deal if the property is unsound.

If you are buying your house with the help of a mortgage, your lender will arrange a mortgage valuation. Common misconception is that this is a type

of survey, but it is not. It is purely a cursory look at a property from the outside to assess how much the property is worth.

Raising Children in a Digital World ack in the 90’s when going to a restaurant was not only a luxury but also a time for family to get together and interact, it wasn’t uncommon to be playing uno or I Spy. Fast forward to 2019, families are now seemingly visiting restaurants at least once a week and this nurturing family time is proving to show more anxiety within parents and how they are socially interacting with their children, or more potently, the lack of it!

In my studies of child and parental behaviour, I have noticed how many families rely on a digital gadget to keep their children entertained. You don’t have to look too far to see a young child sitting with a gadget and being consumed in modern technology. Whether that be watching videos on YouTube, or simply having the interaction of playing games on their device.

Within all this modern tech consumption, there is definitely something missing within the meal time plans, like natural conversations with each other.

Seemingly many families sit in isolation from each other, consumed with content that typically fills you with envy, loneliness or even ashamed of what you’re not doing.

Although technology has its pros, where it can be not only a saviour to a parent who just needs to get the dinner on, can also be educational and increase children’s concentration as well as being great for social networks, we must also recognise that excessive screen time does impact our children.

Our children’s social and emotional well being is being affected, more and more children are suffering with low self esteem, anger outbursts and anxiety.Research shows that

children who have excessive screen time are going to be more fidgety, hyperactive or over stimulated - which in effect will impact their concentration, sleep and social and emotional skills. With this in mind, does this mean children require a label or a diagnosis or does this mean they simply need to be spending more time in the real world outside running, kicking a ball, learning to swim, ride their bike and burn off their energy.

Yes It really is that simple.

All that’s left to say is nobody is more braver than Alexa who tells a toddler that she is having trouble understanding them right now!

The Lesser-Known Way to Cut the Tax on Your Estate nvestment gains and dividends received within an ISA are not subject to tax. While, not officially part of the ISA family, Inheritance ISAs have become a popular way of preserving wealth for the next generation.

They launched in 2013, when the rules changed to allow savers to invest in smaller companies quoted on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) through their stocks and shares ISA. Shares in some companies quoted on AIM can be passed on free of inheritance tax (IHT) under a scheme called Business Relief (BP). If you hold shares in companies eligible for BP for at least two years and still held at date of death, your estate will not have to pay inheritance tax on their value.

The estate of someone with £100,000 worth of stocks and shares in ISAs, plus a house and other assets above the £325,000 limit, they would incur a £40,000 tax charge on their portfolio. If that person had their shares in an AIM IHT Stock and Shares ISA for at least two years, there would be no charge. The 26 May / June 2019

The government are quite stingy with offering tax breaks to us and we therefore recommend clients try to take advantage of those that are available.

The government does not provide a list of companies eligible for BR, so many savers prefer to use investment managers whom pick companies likely to qualify. These portfolios are quite high-risk investments and savers need to be happy that there is going to be volatility involved.

For example, Octopus Investments, a BP manager, fell in value 20% last year but over the past five years it has risen 52%. We will

remind clients that positive ISA returns are awarded to the patient investor. It is also important to keep an eye on charges, not only performance. AIM investing is more expensive than investing in the main markets because there is more legwork involved for managers, but some companies charge high fees, which need to be justified.

It’s also worth being reminded that married couples can inherit each other’s ISA portfolios on death, meaning the portfolio remains intact and can continue to deliver tax free income to the surviving partner.

Alex Dunlop in the Spotlight ome of you might know Alex Dunlop as the owner of A.J. Dunlop Car Servicing Ltd in Beaconsfield Old Town. Others will know him as Central Ward Councillor for Beaconsfield Parish Council.

An affable chap, with a passion for many things.

I met Alex to find out a little more about him....

Born on 24th October 1963, Alex’s parents raised him in Beaconsfield and sent him to Davenies Preparatory School in 1967 and then to Beckett School in Chesham. He did not follow in his father’s legal footsteps, but took more after his mother, who is more practical and creative.

After leaving sixth form, his passion for cars led him to

begin an apprenticeship at a small garage called Short Brothers in Penn, using a bicycle daily from Beaconsfield for transport to and from work. He gained much technical experience working at Short Brothers Garage, whilst studying at

Wycombe College for the written qualifications.

Once qualified, and with enough practical experience under his belt, he was confident enough to venture out on his own! He started up A.J Dunlop and specialised in Jaguars, which he loved. His parents - living at the time in Ledborough Lane - allowed him to turn their drive into a ‘garage’! He bought a beautiful 1962 Mark II Jaguar and restored it, spraying it British Racing Green and (little-did-his parents-know) filling the family home with paint fumes!

From 1983 he worked from a few locations around Beaconsfield and High Wycombe until settling his business on Beaumonts Wood Yard, which is where Beaconsfield Services was built. In 1998 when the motorway services plans were being implemented, he moved to the Old Town of Beaconsfield taking over The Old Town Service Station, where he had first to decommission the petrol pumps!

Alex is currently deputy Mayor of Beaconsfield Town as well as Councillor and has recently been nominated for the position of Mayor, which he said, “If I am elected as Mayor, it would be a great honour to serve Beaconsfield Town.”

Jampee Thai Restaurant Beaconsfield

elcome to the Jampee Thai Restaurant. There has been much intrigue surrounding this newly-refurbished restaurant, and we were delighted to meet owner Sasimon Wiengnon, and brother-in-law Sukrit to taste authentic ‘home-cooked’ Thai dishes in their newly refurbished and Thai-inspired restaurant.

Sasimon has been in the restaurant industry for many years and has lived in Beaconsfield with her husband since 2008. Both come from North East Thailand, working in the hotel business in their home country before coming to England in 2007. Sasimon’s sister, Nuchanee, was chef at a Thai restaurant in Cardiff and is now head-chef at Jampee Thai. Her husband, Krit, from Southern Thailand, is an excellent and professional house manager, warm and

friendly, giving excellent customer service, as one might expect in this wonderful family-run business.

In 2016 Sasimon had a chance to own ‘Thai Sense’ which some of you might remember.

Nuchanee and Sukrit came to help run the business and in December 2018 they decided to rebrand as Jampee Thai, which is the name of a flower in Thailand (and Sasimon’s mother’s name), which is rather touching.

The restaurant is light and airy, with comfortable seats and plenty of space for an array of shared dishes on the table. The restaurant can accommodate up to 64 at one sitting. The food is excellent and portions are generous. The ingredients are fresh with great use made of traditional spices. It was not particularly busy when we visited but even if we had had to wait a while it would have been worth it. The service is attentive, but not intrusive.

The menu is extensive, including a variety of spicy and non-spicy curries, Tom Yum and other Soups, Pad Thai stir fry dishes with an assortment of meat, prawns and vegetables to choose from. The prawn dishes are particularly recommended.

If you are not sure what dishes to choose, the set menus might be a good option - you will not be disappointed! Children- sized portions are available too, to introduce your young ones to the wonders of Thai cooking.

Dick Smith

Celebrating 50 years as Beaconsfield’s Town-Crier obert Hare was Beaconsfield‘s Lord of the Manor in 1724, during the reign of George II. In those days, there were no newspapers, televisions, or computer gadgets to communicate news, so everything had to be done via the town-crier!

It was termed, ”Cries the four ends of Beaconsfield” and the town-crier would bellow his message at the ‘4 ends’, that is, London End, Wycombe End, Windsor End and Aylesbury End whilst the local town people would come out of their homes to listen to the message.

There were probably fewer than 1000 people living in Beaconsfield during 1724, and Harry Lesley was the first town-crier from 1900 - 1925. Campbell Shepherd took over in 1925 until 1965 and then Dick Smith won the competition to become Beaconsfield’s crier from 1969 until the present day.

made it to the finals, and it was held at Lloyd’s Bank which is now where Savill’s in Old Beaconsfield is located. Dick won the competition easily and became the new crier at only 22 years of age! Sadly, Dick and bar one of those contestants have now passed away.

Dick was frequenting the Beech Tree Pub (which is where the Revolution is now situated) and a ‘man-with-a-clip-board’ was looking for contestants in an ale-drinking competition as well as town crier applicants! Dick could enter either, but was intrigued by the Town Crier competition.

On May 6, 1969 at 6:30 pm twelve contestants including one lady, entered the town crying competition. Dick Smith and George Feasey Dick shaking hands with the owner of Pontins after winning the competition.

A few weeks later he was entered in the national championship of bell-ringers which took place in Hastings 1969. Incredibly, Dick won this competition too, and was invited to open a Gala Dance Night, sponsored by Pontin’s Holiday Company at the Albert Hall, London.

We are extraordinarily lucky to be celebrating Dick Smith’s 50th anniversary as Town-Crier. (usually achieved when they have retired!) We wish Dick a wonderful year and many more to come.

Beaconsfield Cinema The Chiltern Clare Bull

efore the Chiltern Picture House was built, residents were able to watch ‘movies’ at Burkes Hall, owned by the Cheshires. This Hall was eventually known, as the Old Silent Picture House, and stood at the corner of Burkes and Gregories Road (where Cardain House and Costa is now).

The refurbished Chiltern cinema re-opened on 18th November 1963 with Mr Arthur Leah, Manager.

Richard Baker, the late broadcaster and newsreader, attended the re-opening with a film crew and there was extensive local publicity.

How often films were shown there is not recorded but a second projector was purchased to show longer films in 1921, so film-going must have been popular and it was decided that the town needed a purpose-built cinema.The Picture House (later known as The Chiltern ) in Beaconsfield New Town opened on the 15th September 1927. Land had been acquired for building a cinema earlier in theyear, and it took six months to build.

It was designed by Leathart and Granger of London (who were noted architects of many cinemas in the provinces), and built by Wrights of Great Missenden.

It was owned by the Cheshire family, who also owned The Playhouse cinema in Gerrards Cross. The first film shown was a silent one: “ Mare Nostrum”, staring Alice Terry and Antonio Moreno. The first “talkie” - The Jazz Singer - was released later that year. The Picture House could seat 500 initially, but this was later reduced to 486.

The opening film shown was the blockbuster James Bond’s “From Russia with Love”. The cinema finally closed its doors on Friday 29th September 1989 after operating for over 60 years despite a spirited campaign by residents to prevent this happening.

The final film shown was “The Three Fugitives”.

In 1994 the site was sold for £335,000 to Grove Court Properties by the then owners South Bucks District Council, in order to help fund the building of the Beacon Centre in Holtspur. It is now a restaurant called Prezzo.

As technology advanced, and screens became larger, in 1955 the capacity was further reduced to 376 which enabled the showing of “Cinemascope” (wide screen) films, the first one shown being “Cockleshell Heroes”.

In 1961 the Picture House was acquired by the Beaconsfield Town Council for the sum of £29,000 and, in 1963, it was closed for extensive modernisation. This modernisation, which included complete refurbishment of the foyer, entrance hall as well as a new larger stage, space for an orchestra if required, dressing rooms and new facilities for audience and artists, also included a new name – The Chiltern. The Chiltern would not only show films but would also be used by the Beaconsfield Theatre Group and other amateur organisations.

Paris Revisited aris is always a special city, and a visit in late spring is a fabulous time to go. And if this is a second or subsequent visit it is worth a bit of pre-planning to balance outings to the iconic venues with some of the more esoteric sights.

Many travellers will start at St Pancras in style with champagne in the Old Booking Office at the romantic St Pancras Renaissance Hotel.

The Eurostar train then takes just over 2 hours to Paris Gare du Nord. The city of Paris is roughly 6 miles across and has 20 individual arrondissements numbered in a clockwise spiral, starting with the 1st at the River Seine.

The river runs through the oldest part of Paris, dividing it into the Left and Right Bank.

While many of the well-known attractions are in the city centre and walking is best, the Metro and RER trains give an enjoyable way to explore the city.

For something different try staying on the East side of town, in the 12th arrondissement for example, as the hotels are better value and there are fewer tourists.

Getting there on the Metro is simple.

There is a peaceful walk to be found here, the Promenade Plantée, a green winding 3-mile stroll elevated 10m above the street to the Bastille. The route follows a long-abandoned mid-19th century viaduct.

The Latin Quarter has many lovely restaurants, and dating back to Roman times, is home to the Pantheon, Sorbonne, the bustling market, and old cobblestone streets. Some of the best food markets also reside here. Cosy bistros abound to sample French local cooking at its best washed down with excellent vin de pays.

A major sight not to be missed is the Musee d’Orsay. This former Paris railway station,

built in 1900, was the world’s first electrified urban rail terminal. It reopened in 1986 as a museum offering 19thcentury art, Impressionist paintings and sculpture, all under the glass roof and the ticking of the station’s two original massive clocks.

The Musee requires a full morning, and a light picnic bought from an enticing boulangerie-fromagerie in the Latin Quarter, and eaten on the river bank, is recommended after. Also, not to be missed are the peaceful Tuileries Gardens (originally tile factories) built in 1564. Louis XIV re-landscaped the gardens a century later to give them their French formal style.

The Musée de l’Orangerie, in the South-West part of the gardens, is splendid, displaying the fabulous works of Monet.

Another enticing eating district is Montmartre up on the hill above Paris. This historical and artistic quartier has been home to painters and

writers, most notably Picasso.

Montmartre has spectacular views from Sacre Coeur and is home to the Dali Museum and Moulin Rouge, famous for its cabaret and cancan dancing.

Slightly off the beaten track for tourists, but well worth a visit, is the atmospheric Gare de Lyon.

The building, with its wonderful facade and 67metre-high clock tower, is also famous for its iconic restaurant Le Train Bleu.

There is a piano in the main concourse so do try a short rendition, as trains arrive from the Côte-d’Azur, Switzerland, Italy and Spain.

Another alternative to consider is the Canal Saint-Martin in the 11th arrondissement, an up-and-coming neighbourhood straddling the canal.

There’s a good covered market, cafes, and relaxing walks. You can also hop on a boat for a leisurely ride through the locks and into the Seine.Leaving late afternoon, the homeward bound Eurostar means that you arrive into London by early evening.

Paris has so much to offer that every visit is different and it is definitely worth returning to sample more that the wonderful city has to offer.

Q. I take a sleeping pill every so often? Is that really going to harm me?

A. Sleeping pills tend to be a last resort for most, so it is important to educate yourself about their potential side effects such as causing constipation, diarrhoea, daytime drowsiness and/ or dizziness. There are alternative ways to help stop insomnia, so seek advice from a GP and never buy sleeping pills online or from an unreliable source. They should always be prescribed by a doctor.

Q. What are the best ways to naturally help me get enough sleep?

A. Try to have a relatively regular sleeping pattern so you feel yourself getting tired, going to bed and waking up naturally at a similar time every day. It is also important to avoid screens and technology before bed, this prevents your brain from having time to ‘switch off’, so give yourself half an hour or so before bed to unwind – without your phone!

Q. I never sleep the recommended eight hours a night, am I endangering my health?

A. Chronic sleep loss can have damaging effects to your health. It can impact your attention span, making you less alert and can also impair your memory and ability to retain information. Not getting enough sleep can also make you feel moody and stressed which can negatively impact your relationships with others.

Equally having too much sleep is now known to not be good for your health. However, we are all different. If you feel refreshed when you wake up, then you may well be getting enough sleep. Quality of sleep is as important as quantity to feel healthy and fresh for the day ahead but aiming for seven to eight hours a night is generally a good rule of thumb.

FATHERS DAY

When did Father’s Day Originate ? ather’s Day was founded in Spokane, Washington at the YMCA in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd.

Its first celebration was in the Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910 and her father, the Civil War veteran, William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six children there. After hearing a sermon about Jarvis’ Mother’s Day at Central Methodist Episcopal Church in 1909, Sonora told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday honouring them.

Sonora initially suggested June 5, her father’s birthday, the pastors did not have enough time to prepare their sermons, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. Hence this year Father’s Day is on 16th June.

Programme goes live for May’s Chilterns Walking Festival he programme for May’s Chilterns Walking Festival spring event has been announced by the Chilterns Conservation Board, organiser of the popular festival.

Running from Saturday 18 May to Sunday 02 June 2019, the programme includes over 70 guided walks, events and activities covering the whole of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) which stretches from Oxfordshire through Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire into Hertfordshire.

The new programme includes specialist themed walks, and opportunities to discover lively stories and scenic landscapes associated with the Chilterns. Some walks include the prospect of sampling local food and drink, others provide ‘have-a-go’ sessions or chances to learn about the area’s wildlife, history and colourful characters.

• Classic Chilterns Views – join our knowledgeable guide and follow the ancient Ridgeway, taking in the views from Coombe Hill Monument before lunching in Buckmoorend at the Farm Shop café; returning past Chequers, country home of Britain’s Prime Minister.

– explore Henley’s historical past and visit Midsomer Murders locations; our guide will reveal filming locations, personal anecdotes & facts you won’t find in the guide book.

• Mindful Wellbeing Nordic Walk – improve your health physically and mentally with a 2–3 mile Nordic trek through Chilterns Woodlands using walking poles; a feast for the senses discovering woodland plants and trees.

• Bluebells and Blacksmiths – this ‘Meet the Maker’ craft walk will introduce you to two workshops: Cobalt Blacksmiths and Gordon Kent Furniture Maker. The walk takes in beautiful scenery including beechwoods carpeted in bluebells (nature permitting).

• Living History: Jordan’s Village – discover the history of this Quaker-founded village, including a tour of Jordan’s Meeting House and optional tea & cakes at Spindrift B@B.

Each walk is guided by an experienced leader who knows the area well and is keen to share stories of the people and places that have shaped the countryside.

Veterans Called For Tour To Mark 75th Anniversary Of Italian Campaign

Fortunately, in May 1944 the allies prevailed. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Italian campaign and the Royal British Legion is inviting veterans, which are now in their 90s, back to Italy to lay old ghosts to rest and honour fallen comrades.

Nichola Rowlands-Smith, Head of Travel, Royal British Legion, explains: “The Italian campaign seems to be less well-known in the nation’s history, than other battles such as D Day, yet it was another pivotal turning point in bringing to an end World War II.

Veterans whom fought in Italy can opt for a tour to either Monte Cassino and Salerno or Monte Cassino and Anzio; a special tour to the National Memorial Arboretum is also on offer for those unable to travel overseas. The Treasury is enabling these free-ofcharge tours, which are funded by LIBOR fines, and will enable a WWII veteran to return with a family member and carer.

“We have a wonderful opportunity to take back those who fought, for them to pay their respects to fallen comrades, meet fellow veterans and lay old ghosts to rest.”

They come in all shapes, sizes & prices to suit, or make your own. Simply put, the more you have the better. Plants prefer rainwater to tap water, so use your water butt water for your garden & house plants to save £s on your water bill.

Water plants around the roots (not leaves) in the early evening when the sun has gone down or early in the morning to reduce water evaporation. Instead of a little often, water well & less often, this way roots will develop deeper in the soil, which will help the plant to thrive.

Avoid watering plants or the lawn from the tap or hose. If you do have a hose attach a spring loaded nozzle to cut of water supply quickly.

Butt theirs more - Use the water butt water to clean your car.

This will save you loads of time, as you will not need to leather dry, as it leaves no smears.

Clean your car as normal with car shampoo & water butt water. The trick is to rinse using the water butt, no need to dry or anything. Amazing!
