The Beaconsfield Society Environmental News

f you are interested in our green spaces and neighbourhood, why not join the Beaconsfield Society’s Environment Group.

This is a snapshot of what they’ve been up to these recent months: (a) By popular demand, they ran the BringBack-The-Blossom Campaign again in October, resulting in a further 26 cherry blossom trees being ordered for front gardens, a total of 65 trees, with a further 15 planted on verges. A grand total of 80 more trees in Beaconsfield in 2018!!! (b) The Signage Removal Party were out in force on the 4th November and cleared the town of redundant signs. (c) Dead trees in verges in the town were identified and their locations forwarded to the

local council. We note that a significant number of them have been cut down to one metre above the ground. (d) A town-wide Litter Pick took place on Saturday 24th November between 10.00am and midday, starting at the Town Hall green.

It was the biggest turnout ever, with an impressive 43 volunteers! Just shows you how many people care.

Beaconsfield School’s Basketball Festival n 22nd January The Beaconsfield School hosted their annual SEND basketball festival. Students from Egerton Rothesay, CWA and Alfriston attended the festival which was run by Year 11 students.

The Year 11 students had to plan six mini basketball sessions which included skills such as: set shoots, lay ups, dribbling, passing, defending and attacking 1 v1. After the skill sessions the Year 11 students organised and officiated a mini tournament. The students had fantastic feedback from the staff attending the festival and they got a lot out of the day. Life skills such as: communication, organisation, resilience and sense of humour were very evident throughout the day from the Year 11 students.

The Year 11 students who organised the festival are part of the schools, ‘Basketball Raising Boys Achievement Group’. The students are rewarded for hitting attendance, coursework and attainment targets. The students have a real passion for basketball and have been taken to London to watch National 5’s tournament in November, the National league final in January and have the opportunity to organise basketball festivals.

Alfriston School awarded £3200

by Buckinghamshire Freemasons he BMCF (Bucks Masonic Centenary Fund) awarded £3,200 for the purchase of a trailer for Alfriston School based in Beaconsfield. Mick Clanfield (Bucks Provincial Charity Steward) recently went to the school to meet the Headmistress and girls that will be using it.

Alfriston School is a special school for girls with learning difficulties, and our main aim is to help our girls to gain the confidence and skills needed to be able to enjoy and participate in life as contributing adults. We are delighted to be supported in this by the Buckinghamshire Freemasons, who have kindly given us a trailer for our minibus to enable us to provide invaluable experiences for our girls to learn to face personal challenges in unfamiliar and testing environments.

girls out of their home environments on expeditions and trips. Some of our girls are learning to ride a bike, and we have taken the mountain bikes out to the woods to give them an exciting and inspiring setting in which to learn. Others have been on residential adventurous trips such as the New Forest, where the trailer has been used to take the large and expansive equipment needed.

Our older girls are practicing for the Duke of Edinburgh Award, and the trailer is much needed in taking their camping and other kit needed to support this. Our curriculum can now include a wider and more varied programme of adventurous and outdoor activities that will develop their personal attributes such as resilience, perseverance and co-operation to equip them for life beyond Alfriston.

Hay Fever Treatment

ith spring and summer on their way, it’s not all sunshine and walks in the park – for some it means a season of suffering.

It is reported that up to 1 in 4 people in the UK are affected by seasonal allergic rhinitis – otherwise known as hay fever.

Hay fever is caused by your immune system reacting unnecessarily to certain pollens, common symptoms include an itchy nose, sneezing, runny nose and nasal congestion.Trees will produce pollen in late spring and some grasses continue to produce pollen until September meaning the season can last for many months.

The summer months are full of activity for most of us, from major sporting events and weddings, to important exams – all of which can be adversely affected by the suffering brought on by severe hay fever symptoms.

There are now a whole host of over-the-counter hay fever 10 March / April 2019

treatments available which can be used to good effect, however, around 10% of sufferers do not respond to conventional treatment so may consider a Kenalog injection to help them get through the season.

Kenalog injections – the facts • Kenalog is for the treatment of severe hay fever and should be considered as a second stage of treatment for patients who have already tried and had little relief from other forms of medication.

• A Kenalog injection does not cure hay fever, it temporarily suppresses the immune system enough to take away the symptoms in most people who need it. .

• Kenalog contains Triamcinolone Acetonide which belongs to a group of medicines called corticosteroids (steroids) which are commonly used for many serious medical conditions. Kenalog is injected in the buttock muscle and takes just a few seconds.

• Not suitable for children under the age of 12.

Give hayfever the heave-ho! or many the warmer weather will come as a welcome relief, but if you’re one of the 15 million people in the UK affected by hayfever, you may not want to hang up your hanky just yet. Hayfever can cause a whole host of unpleasantness that can literally leave your eyes watering. Swelling, mucus formation, and itching and burning in localised areas such as the throat, nose and eyes, are just some of the symptoms we associate with hayfever.

Give hayfever the heave-ho with the following suggestions: Pollinosan Hayfever Tablets from A.Vogel contain seven tropical herbs, including Luffa operculata and Galphimia glauca, to help with allergy to grass and tree pollen, two of the most common hayfever triggers in the UK, as well as allergies to dust, animals and pets, known as allergic rhinitis. Competition

Quercetin is found naturally in certain foods, such as apples (with the skin on), red onions, capers, and black tea. It is also available in supplement form. A typical dose for hayfever is usually between 200 and 400 mg up to three times a day.

Eye problems can be the most irritating symptom of hayfever.

When pollen comes into contact with your eyes, they can become inflamed, itchy and watery. This can obscure your vision and cause an enormous amount of discomfort. Beaconsfield Rugby Club on the Rise ugby at Beaconsfield is definitely in a healthy state. While the miniand-youth section continues to be the biggest playing numbers in the whole country, the 1st XV is now playing level 6 against some of the top sides in the South West region.

For next season things will improve further with the announcement of a new coaching structure when ex-Wasps and England Saxons player Tom French will be the new head Coach, supported on a consultancy basis by Frazer McArdell, ex-Head Coach of Singapore national team for the past

two seasons, and current 1st XV player, Aled Lewis, who will assume responsibility for the backs.

This is a great statementof-intent from the club who wants to become the top amateur side in the region.

Director of Rugby Noel O’Mahony said, “We made a conscious decision four years ago to invest in our infrastructure and our coaching set-up, to offer the best facilities to rugby players and spectators alike.

We have had a truly top-class coaching set-up headed by

Simon Tattersall and you can see the benefits it’s had on the field with the standard of rugby being played. It also so heartening to see so many ex-junior and colts playing for their home club. For next season Tom, Frazer and Aled all have a huge amount of experience and we hope that this will enable us to push forward again.”

Here come the girls… glance out of the window in mid-February may not immediately bring to mind sunny afternoons spent at picturesque village cricket grounds, but that hasn’t stopped the girls at Beaconsfield Cricket Club from picking up their bats and getting in shape for the season ahead.

With 70 girls attending winter training and over 100 expected to participate in the summer months, Beaconsfield boasts one of the largest girls’ cricket sections in the county.

We asked 13 year old player, Evie Easterbrook, to explain the attraction.

‘I really enjoy playing cricket,’ says Evie, ‘there is a fun atmosphere at the club when

we are all training together.

You can play in matches and tournaments which is great as you get the chance to make and play with new friends. I was completely new to cricket when I started a couple of years ago but now it is one of my favourite sports’.

Whilst Evie has progressed to representing Bucks County, Beaconsfield CC welcomes players of all abilities, including complete beginners and it’s not too late to try a Saturday indoor session before outdoor training begins at the club on Friday nights after Easter.

Having spent many an

uncomfortable day on the side of a freezing football pitch or a wet netball court, the thought of spending warm Friday evenings sitting in front of the pavilion with a glass in my hand, inhaling the aroma of freshly barbecued sausages and listening to the gentle thud of leather on willow, definitely appeals.

Stop Burglars with Laminated Glass ue to the rise in house break-ins GX Home Improvements have been replacing toughened double-glazed units for laminated glass units to prevent access through the glass.

The difference between the two is often unknown, and they advise using laminated glass in any areas where safety glass is needed on the ground floor such as French, Patio and back doors and windows, as this could stop intruders getting into your house.

Toughened glass, also known as tempered glass, is up to 5 times stronger than regular glass. This is achieved by heating regular glass at high temperatures and then cooling very quickly. This process makes it tougher and up to 400% more resistant to heat and shock than ordinary glass.

This treatment allows the glass to break into small, blunt pieces under pressure, making it much safer than shards of normal glass.

This type of glass cannot be recut after it has been toughened; it must be cut prior to the toughening process. Toughened glass is used for table tops, splashbacks, balustrades and shower screens.

Laminated glass technically has the same strength as regular glass but has a plastic interlayer between two panes of 3mm thick glass, holding them together. The PVB plastic interlayer is a tough resin which will hold the shards in place should the glass break, providing a safe double-layered design. For safety reasons, laminated glass must comply

with EN ISO 12543 specifications, and the transparency of the glass won’t be altered during the laminating process.

If the glass does get broken, this interlayer holds the whole piece in place so there is no hole left in the window, where for example an intruder could get through.

This type of glass is used in car windscreens and shop fronts, and they often fit laminated glass into schools and other public buildings.

Beaconsfield Cricket Club Counts the Cost of Illegal Dumping eaconsfield Cricket Club has been left reeling after a second occasion of serious illegal dumping of huge amounts of waste on their ground in the last 12 months.

At some point on the night of Tuesday 8 January 2019, the Club’s ground was broken into and many tonnes of building material and general waste were deposited on the field where the Christmas Tree sales were held in December. Building waste, furniture, industrial cables and empty tins of rapeseed oil can be clearly seen in the enormous rubbish piles that blight the landscape at the Eastern approach to the town.

According to the South Bucks website, Buckinghamshire County Council works very closely with the Waste Partnership for Buckinghamshire to try and tackle cases of illegal fly tipping. The partnership launched their Illegal Dumping Costs campaign back in 2003, and since then has been working tirelessly to combat illegal dumping and waste management offences across the county.

Mrs Eileen Daniel, the Club’s Chair of House and Grounds said, “This is a very serious criminal offence. The cost of removing the waste is likely to be more than £10,000, a huge sum for a small not-for-profit organisation such as ours. As well as being costly, unsightly and inconvenient, the rubbish is a potential health hazard and this type of illegal activity is something that must be stopped.’

The Police have been informed of the offence at Beaconsfield Cricket Club and the Fly Tipping Investigation Team from Bucks County Council, after attending the site and due to the huge scale of this illegal dumping, have involved staff from the Environment Agency. An investigation is underway to attempt to identify the companies at the source of the waste with a view to prosecution. As soon as all evidence at the site has been examined, the clean up operation will begin.

As for the future, the club are reviewing their security arrangements again in light of this latest incident and are seeking expert advice in this regard. In the meantime, Beaconsfield Cricket Club continues its preparations for the new season and welcomes any companies wishing to offer support via advertising or sponsorship.

The latest offence comes at a time when local authorities are scaling back waste facilities and increasing charges for non-household waste in an attempt to balance the books.

Social media is a term for online sites that people use to contact others to form social networks. Some of the most popular platforms include Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp, Instagram, Skype, YouTube and Snapchat. Gaming chat sites are also popular ways for children and teenagers to connect with others who share their particular gaming interests.

Social media and online communications is here to stay and will attract children at even younger ages. It is hard to predict the path it may take in the future and parents, educators and professionals working with children need to understand 24 March / April 2019

In my opinion an outright ban will rarely work. Social media is becoming increasingly embedded in apps, games and websites and even learning environments, making it very difficult to control. Trying to ban it might tempt your child when he’s away from school, making it even more difficult to control.

It is important to be aware what children do online.

Try not to ‘snoop’ but stay involved in a way that makes your children understand that you respect their privacy but want to make sure they’re safe.

Tell your children it is important to: * Treat others with respect, never post hurtful or embarrassing messages.

Ensure that they know that they must and can always tell you about any embarrassing or bullying

* Teach children not to share anything on social media that they wouldn’t want you, their teachers, or possible future employers to see. * Privacy settings are important. Go through them together to make sure your kids underdstand each one. Also, explain that passwords are there to protect them from things like identify theft. They should never share them with anyone, be it girl/boyfriends, or best friends. * Make a simple rule - if you don’t know them, don’t befriend them.

Fraudsters target properties by pretending to be you so that they can try to sell or mortgage your property and the tactics they use are ever more sophisticated. The Land Registry advise that you are most at risk if your property is: Rented out Empty Mortgage-free Unregistered There are a few simple things you can do to minimise the risks.

Make sure your property is registered at HM Land Registry.It should be already, if you bought it or mortgaged it since 1990, but if it is not then you can apply voluntarily

for first registration.

Keep your contact details up to date with the Land Registry, including an email address or an address abroad.

This is particularly important if you do not live at the property and have moved since your purchase of it (landlords with buy-to-lets often overlook updating their rental property contact details when moving home themselves).

Sign up to the Land Registry Property Alert Service www.gov.uk/ property-alert. It is free of charge and the Land Registry will notify you of certain applications affecting any property you are monitoring (for up to 10 properties).

BAKING

Blueberry & Banana Muffins hese little beauties are packed with nutrients that promote brain health.

They are light and fluffy with just enough sweetness, so they don’t cause a big sugar spike. You may be surprised to see that I use a whole courgette. This sneaky ingredient is a clever way of getting some greens in.

You can blitz the sunflower seeds in a blender if you have a fussy eater.

Makes 18 muffins

Ingredients • 3 free-range eggs • 150g coconut sugar or light muscovado sugar • 1 courgette, grated • 1 banana, mashed • 2 tsp baking powder • 175g spelt or wholemeal flour • 160g ground almonds • ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda • ¼ tsp fine sea salt • 150g blueberries (fresh or frozen) • 50g sunflower seeds 30 March / April 2019

• Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas mark 4 and line muffin tins with 18 muffin paper cases.

• In a large bowl, whisk the eggs and coconut sugar together for 3 minutes using an electric whisk, or until they are nice and creamy.

• Add the grated courgette and mashed banana and whisk again briefly.

• Add the flour, ground almonds, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and salt, and mix together with a spatula until well combined.

• Finally, fold in the blueberries and sunflower seeds.

• Drop a small ice-cream scoopful of muffin mixture into each muffin case then bake in the oven for 25 minutes, or until they have risen and the tops are golden brown.

Nut-free Replace the ground almonds with 160g sunflower seeds ground to a flour in a food

processor. No need to add the extra sunflower seeds at the end, in this case.

Gluten-free Use rice flour or gluten-free plain flour.

Egg-free Use 3 tbsp ground flaxseeds mixed with 7½ tbsp water.

DINING REVIEW AT STOKE PARK CLUB

I fall in love with Stoke Park every time I catch a glimpse of the majestic Mansion standing proudly amongst the mature trees”. It is not one of the seven wonders of the world, but it is certainly one of the wonders of Buckinghamshire!

Stoke Park Club Mansion sits in 300 acres of parkland, with lakes, a championship golf course and is home to the Boodles Tennis Tournament - a warm-up for Wimbledon with many famous tennis stars practising. Stoke Park and its grounds has been the location for several major films, including James Bond’s Goldfinger, Tomorrow Never Dies, Bridget Jones’s Diary, Layer Cake and recently for Alan Sugar’s The Apprentice aired on the BBC last year.

Stoke Park was designed by James Wyatt between 1788 and in 1791 and in 1908 it became the first Country Club and Hotel in the UK. Humphry Repton was commissioned to upgrade Lancelot “Capability” Brown’s landscaping and a luxurious restaurant was named after him and became ‘Humphry’s Restaurant’. We were pleased to be invited to dine in this 5-Red Star-rated dining room.

A friendly smile greeted us as we entered the President’s Bar. We were impressed by the luxury and ambience. If only 32 March / April 2019

the walls could talk, they would have many a story to tell! The restaurant manager, Gabriel, chatted to us as though we were old friends and made us feel at home. Although I am an ‘awkward’ gluten-free (GF) eater Gabriel reassured me that I could order most things on the menu and they would adjust the meal for my requirements. We were at ease viewing the menu reclining on the sofa - a very civilised way of ordering. We ambled into the dining room, mainly occupied by couples seated next to one another, rather than opposite, which I always find rather formal. Soft and

non-intrusive music in the background helped create a pleasant ‘buzz’ to the room.

We were both delighted Chris Wheeler was in the kitchen.

You might have heard of him Executive Chef who has been wowing guests and food critics over the past 25 years winning Hotel Chef of the Year, best at serving over 250 covers (how does he do that?) and Chef of the Year in Berkshire and Buckinghamshire Life Food and Drink Awards in 2016.

His culinary accolades don’t stop there. In 2017 he was appointed UK Ambassador for the Quality Standard Mark Beef and Lamb Scheme and he raises a lot of money for charitable causes. This year, Chris will be travelling to Tokyo, cooking at Japan’s most prestigious food festival to showcase British Beef and Lamb.

We were quite ravenous by now, and for starters my companion had ordered Game Consommé, Wood Pigeon Croquette, Button Mushroom and Truffle Mayonnaise, which was intense and very meaty.

He loved the croquette - very savoury with pepper tones.

The pink champagne sorbet palate cleanser was a refreshing breather before the ‘pièce de résistance’ !

I had Pan Fried Scallops, Humphry’s Black Pudding (GF factor) Roast Celeriac and Textures of Apple. The scallops were cooked to perfection, melting in the mouth and were a perfect accompaniment with touches of slightly-sweet apple and a tender celeriac crunch.

The wine list was extensive and pitched from medium to more expensive. We opted for a bottle of South American Ochagavia Silvestre Merlot, 2017 - ‘supple and alluring plummy characteristics producing a soft and smooth flavour.’

I must emphasize that, booking at Humphry’s is a pure dining experience: It’s not one that can be rushed; the service is just right and no-one interrupts conversations by asking if ‘everything is all right’.

However, members of staff

are watchful in case anything is amiss.

There are six main courses to choose from - two fish, three meat (duck, venison and beef) and a vegetarian option. My companion opted for the duck, medium rare. It had a fine glaze on the skin that was so tender it melted in his mouth (I had a taste - :) ) With the duck came curly kale, deep-fried crackles that exploded in the mouth and a juice that was not too rich. Interestingly, the duck was accompanied by rhubarb, a refreshing change from plum, and works much better! It had a refreshing tang.

My Pan Roast Stone Bass, Smoked Haddock and Mussel Veloute, roast Grelot Onion and Chive Oil was delicious. This was a very light meal, which I prefer to meat when dining in the evening. The fish was soft

We both appreciated the dessert: Baked Passion Fruit Cream, Compressed Pineapple Coconut and Mint Sorbet was superb. My companion loves crumble, and said his Pear Soufflé Crumble with Crème Anglaise and Blackcurrant Ice-Cream was absolutely fabulous - the best he’s ever had. Foodie Heaven!

Even though Stoke Park is a private-members club, Humphry’s is open to anyone between Thursday and Sunday, from 7pm 10pm. A three-course meal costs £68 per person; exceptional value for exquisite food in breathtaking and opulent surroundings. An experience that is priceless.

Maintaining Healthy Eyes....

ith new advice in the news every day it’s not easy deciding on the best way to keep fit and healthy, but as we are living longer it’s now more important than ever.

Your eyes will certainly benefit from a healthy lifestyle. You can help to protect against cataracts and age related macula degeneration by eating foods rich in vitamins A, C and E. Rather than popping tablets, increase your consumption of sweet potatoes, melon, liver and tropical fruits.

Dark green leafy vegetables, carrots, tomatoes and red peppers are also great sources

of these vitamins. The NHS also recommends we eat at least 2 portions of fish a week.

The omega 3 in fish (also in rapeseed oil, soya products and walnuts) has shown in clinical trials to have a positive effect on the symptoms of dry eye.

For overall eye health eat plenty of wholegrain foods such as quinoa, brown rice and wholegrain pasta as these contain vitamin E, zinc and niacin.

Ensure your eyes aren’t under any strain by limiting use on electronic devices to 20 minutes at a time. If you wear glasses consider blue control lenses which can help prevent fatigue and eyestrain whilst enhancing contrast and colour perception.

When spending time outdoors consider UV lenses as these offer 100% protection from

UV, preventing UV induced ageing of the eye. Don’t forget to wear eye protection for things such as hedge trimming or sports such as squash and consider disposable contact lenses as they give the best all round vision for many sports and hobbies.

Do ensure you have regular eye tests. Once every 2 years is recommended unless your optician advises earlier, or you have any concerns. Finally, If you have any questions ask your optician.

Largest ever conservation project in the Chilterns is awarded National Lottery Funding five-year project to restore and enhance habitats, landscapes and the heritage of the Central Chilterns, has been awarded a National Lottery grant of £2 million.

The Chalk, Cherries & Chairs Landscape Partnership Scheme is spearheaded by the Chilterns Conservation Board, and will encourage people to connect to the wildlife and cultural heritage of the Chilterns through a number of projects across three themes: Wildlife & Landscape, Heritage & Landscape and People, Communities & Landscape.

We are part of the national Plastic Free Community movement started by Surfers Against Sewage, a campaign that won the Environment and Conservation award at the 2018 Charity Awards.

PFB are working towards obtaining Plastic Free Community status for Beaconsfield. Our aim is to encourage change in local organisations, businesses, schools, clubs, etc to reduce dependency on single use plastic and use alternatives. We particularly want to encourage the use of reusable cups in local cafe outlets, cut down the use and sale of single use plastic water bottles and the use of plastic wrapping and packaging in local shops and supermarkets.

Rennie Grove is a charity providing care and support for adults and children diagnosed with cancer and other life-limiting illness and their families living in Bucks and Herts. An Adventure through Andalusia had always wanted to explore the magical part of Spain known as Andalusia with its fabulous cities steeped in history, architecture and culture. So when I happened to see the Rick Stein BBC series on the culinary travels to Cadiz I was hooked. More so as the mysteries of Cadiz as a trading port, have intrigued me since I was a child playing the pirate board game Buccaneer with my family.

Organising the trip was easy with BA flights from Heathrow to Gibraltar, then a short walk over the border passing the inevitable English red telephone box, to pick up the hire car in Spain.

The 75 mile drive to Cadiz was simple, on dual carriageway, and we checked into the centrally placed El Armador Casa Palacio, parking

the car in a conveniently located underground carpark.

The hotel is on one of the many traffic free streets lined with a mix of traditional shops, churches, restaurants and bars.

After marvelling at the floor to ceiling vertical garden in the hotel reception we were delighted to be given a huge room with two balconies over the quiet street.

I do like travelling to two centre holidays, I then researched nearby Seville, famed for its ubiquitous orange marmalade (which I’ve always had a penchant for).

This was another city that fascinated me. Having evolved the plan it was no problem to convince my partner that we should sample both places.

It was exciting exploring a new area and we stumbled across a tiny late-night restaurant called Casa Tino’s to sample fried snakelocks anemone (supposedly the best in Spain!) followed by marinated squid and wild seabass, washed down with an excellent vino tinto.

Cadiz is one of the oldest cities in Europe, founded more than 3,000 years ago by the Phoenicians. You are never more than a mile from the sea which surrounds the old city on three sides and is always discernible in the golden light shimmering at the end of the long, straight streets, flanked by stone mansions painted in pastel tones of pink, green and blue.

The city is renowned for its fresh tuna and chilled manzanilla sherry, both of which can be found in the central market where the tempting smell of fish frying wafts from every bar. The sherry is the colour of straw and made just down the coast. Try this with tortillas de camarones – featherlight fritters speckled with the tiniest shrimps.

In the afternoon we visited the 18th century baroque cathedral, which is one of the city’s bestknown monuments, a sight not to be missed. An early evening stroll along the sea front was then followed by a sumptuous meal of nori-fish and guacamole at La Candela in the old town centre.

Before leaving Cadiz we had to visit Playa Victoria with its huge beach so that we could swim in the sea and sample more delicious food washed down with iced white wine at one of the cafes on the edge of the hot sand.

Travelling North East to Seville was a simple journey, though sadly we did not have time on the way to sample the wonderful sherries made in Jerez. The architecture in Seville is outstanding, the highlights being visits to the Plaza de Espana and the Royal Alcázar. Although it was May, the heat of the day meant that a small tapas and cooling white wine were very welcome at lunchtime, with evenings saved for more substantial meals.

The sultry nights would not be complete without taking in flamenco dancing, full of graceful arm movements, stomping feet, castanets and a dark brooding passion.

All in all it was a fabulous adventure that we will never forget, though we didn’t get to buy any orange marmalade in the end. We will definitely be back to pick some up in the not too distant future.

With Spring in the air it is time to start thinking about outdoors and the garden. It’s the perfect time of year to prepare your compost heap, providing you - with minimal effort - with free top soil within six or more months.

Here’s the quick and easy method: With or without a compost bin, start a pile of browns (twigs, dry leaves, shredded paper, animal bedding) on soil, then layer with any greens (think vegan diet only grass cuttings, uncooked fruit & veg, tea and coffee grounds). Repeat, always finishing with a layer of greens. This heats up the heap quickly, breaking down woody material while getting air into the heap with layering. Once ready, it looks like moist soil, crumbly, dark with some twiggy bits. Adding compost improves soil structure, reduces the need to water, encourages healthy plant growth & saves on fertilizers.
