to becoming a snowbird

• Find your winter destination There are so many warm places to choose from. The local snowbirds mentioned in this story travel to Arizona, southern California and even Mexico during the winter months. But states such as Florida, Texas, Nevada and Hawaii also tend to be popular winter destinations. Research the climate and cost of living in each place to see if what you find suits you. You might also consider the size of cities and the resources available.

• How to live Maintaining one home may be enough work as it is, but snowbirds have to maintain two homes. Should you rent or buy? As a first-time snowbird, rent to see if the snowbird life is for you.

After that, it is up to you. Renting requires less commitment, but what if you can’t get the same place every winter? Do you want to lug everything around with you from place to place?

Consider going mobile! Staying in an RV is a great way to take what you need with you and to travel. There are even parks for people 50+.

• What to do before heading out Unhook all outside hoses so they don’t freeze. Bring in all outside décor.

Throw away all perishable food items and take out the trash. Install motion light detectors. Turn off your hot water heater and water. Remove all valuables from sight—lock them away if you can. Don’t leave an answering machine message telling callers you’re out of town. Don’t close your blinds or curtains—this suggests that no one is home. Forward your mail. Arrange for a neighbor to park their car in your driveway, and check for newspapers and packages. Arrange for someone to mow your lawn or shovel walkways.

Snowbirds head south for their winter paradise

ith the onset of winter, aging western slopers tend to either hibernate or migrate.

While the hibernators tough out Colorado’s cold and flu season by burrowing between flannel sheets, lying blissfully dormant in an extra layer of comfort food-induced fat, snowbirds head south to places like Arizona, California and even Mexico, where ice, sleet and snow are only spotted on the Weather Channel.

Local snowbirds are often retirees, having no attachments or obligations, and having the freedom to do what they want. Snowbirds move in the same general migratory pattern, but they take very different paths to their winter havens and spend their time differently.

Feeling the itch Bob and Mary Lillie, both in their mid-70s, have always loved to travel.

“We rented an RV and liked it so well that we bought one,” Bob said.

Three years ago, they decided they wanted a permanent base other than their Grand Junction home. They sold the RV and bought an efficiency townhouse in an Arizona senior community.

Mary looks forward to their forays to the south because there are fewer obligations. She acknowledges that she has more free time than her working friends, but she says the downside of retirement is, “I say ‘yes’ too much. In Arizona, everybody is retired. You only do what you want to do.”

Bob said they get lots of visitors in Arizona and they tend to travel and eat out more often.

“We have more leisure time so we’re more involved in church,” he said.

Bob also volunteers his time delivering meals to seniors, and driving others to doctor’s appointments and grocery stores.

“We love the desert a lot,” Bob said.

“The quiet, the solitude and the sunsets are great. If I can’t get outside, I’m kind of grouchy. I always like to be outdoors.”

Eventually, they will have to settle in either Colorado or Arizona, but for now they love going back and forth.

“We miss the red rock country when we’re in Arizona,” Mary said, “and we miss the saguaro cactus when we’re here.”

Bob noted that the migration of retirees picks up after the holidays.

“People start drifting in after Christmas and then by mid-March they get the itchy itches to go back home,” he said.

In search of arches Phil and Nancy Swille belong to Western Horizon Resorts, a campground membership club with

several locations across the U.S., including one in Casa Grande, Arizona. They wanted to downsize their 33-foot, fifth wheel camper, but when housing prices plummeted, they decided to invest in a second home.

“Casa Grande sits between Phoenix and Tucson,” Phil, 76, said. “It’s a subdivision with an HOA and full-time residents. We stay in a small city and play in the big cities.”

The Swilles are torn between their love of Grand Junction, the camaraderie they enjoy in RV parks, and the mild weather that makes Casa Grande a perfect winter retreat.

Nancy, 73, said they use the fifth wheel in summer to go north.

“Our hobby is hunting for arch rock formations,” she said.

The Swilles are members of the National Arch and Bridge Society and make regular treks to Moab and St. George, Utah.

“Phil’s knees and my back are slowing us down,” Nancy said. “But there’s nothing like a good hike. I would hike anywhere if there were an arch at the end of the trail.”

Phil said coming home to the Grand Valley is just as much of a treat.

“Not too many cities have the caliber of golf courses, baseball, quality of life and artists that we have here,” he said. “This is a university town and a city with lots of retirees. We have fresh fruit and medical facilities.

These create an atmosphere for opportunities.”

Wilma, 73, likes the fact that they can bring their two Yorkies, Dusty and Benji, for the winter.

Both agree that Phoenix will someday be their permanent home because gas and groceries are more affordable and there are more activities to be enjoyed year-round.

“There’s more traffic in Arizona, but it moves better,” Bill said. “The towns are cleaner and you never see any weeds.”

The Joneses take their boat to Lake Pleasant to fish for bass, trout and catfish. They enjoy the oranges and grapefruits that grow in plentiful supply, and would never dream of missing the November block party.

“Winter is nice,” Bill said. “I had both knees replaced and my doctor said to stay where it’s warm.”

For Tom, the main attraction to their Arizona home is the warm weather.

“My bones don’t hurt and I don’t have to scoop snow,” he said. “It’s awfully close to paradise. The block parties are a hoot.”

Mom was the dreamer. Dad was the builder.

oon Farm has a legacy in western Colorado spanning five decades, inspiring imagination in kids and adults.

“It’s hard to describe,” said David Moon, who currently manages and oversees the farm.

“It is not a theme park. It is like a living museum. People can explore history from ancient Egypt through medieval times to the old west and much more.”

Ella and Wallace Moon bought the farm in 1954, located at 1360 18-1/2 Road. It was just like many other farms in the agricultural area north of Fruita. Now it’s much more than that to the Grand Valley community. Moon Farm’s evolution from a working farm to a day camp to a historical family park is a love story on many levels.

This 15-acre farm now encompasses a children’s playground, 30 miniature playhouses, a petting zoo, picnic area, mini-museums and is still a working farm.

Wallace loved to farm so he moved his family from Utah to Fruita and bought 80 acres with David Moon hanging out near the pumpkin patch at Moon Farm in Fruita. a house and a few barns. The Moons would build a new playhouse each year to surprise the children. Moon Farm’s first playhouse was a tree house, which Wallace’s son, Mike, helped build.

“Mom was the dreamer and Dad was the builder,” David’s older sister, Mary Joan, said.

Virginia Beemer moved to Grand Junction in 1968 to head the parent education program at Mesa College. In the spring, she sought a large venue for her students to celebrate the end of the year. The parents suggested taking them to Moon Farm.

“It was the highlight of the year for the children and parents to come out in May,” Beemer said.

“Ella would always join us. She would jump off her golf cart and come sit with the kids.”

Over the years, the Moon children helped their parents build and paint other attractions.

In 1975, Sandy Patterson, who had a daycare business in Grand Junction, rented the farm for thesummer, using it as a day camp.

The next year, Ella and Wallace ran their own day camp on the farm instead of renting it out.

Multiple generations have attended Moon Farm’s children’s day camp, summer camp or visited on school field trips.

“I took my oldest son to the day camp in 1979 when he was a preschooler,” Grand Valley native JoAnn Coleman, 65, said. “Then I took his daughter in the 1990s. Last Octo-

Ask the Old Bag Advice Column for the Over 50 Crowd

Dear Old Bag: In the August issue, American Woman’s letter read, “I would like your help in starting a movement.” (This was in regard to each person treating the other with honor and respect.) You answered, “Let’s do it. I’m in!” I represent United Society of Humanity.

I will wear it and explain what it is when asked. It makes sense to me that we seniors should begin the movement around the world to treat all we meet with honor and respect.

There is a little woman at the park where I walk. I do not know her heritage and she does not appear to speak a word of English. However, we are friends. We shake hands, smile warmly at each other, and she pets my dog. It occurs to me that seniors everywhere speak the language of friendship. We must teach the younger generations around the world to love. We can put an end to war. It is a huge undertaking, but I believe we are up to it. We are the Seniors For Peace in this World! An assignment for this month is to smile at those you meet. Thank you.

Dear Old Bag: My friend takes care of a 93-year-old woman. She’s not a relative, but she was a friend of her mother’s. Out of the goodness of her heart, she agreed to be this woman’s power of attorney, because she has no living children.

When the woman became unable to stay at home alone, my friend moved her into a wonderful assisted living community with staff that really cares for her. But even two years later, the woman is still unhappy and wishes to go home.

My friend, who is a hospice nurse, explained to her why she can’t go

home and that she has people at the facility that will care for her. The woman argues that in her last days, she wants to be happy and the only way she will be happy is at her house, which she can’t stay at by herself. My question to you is where do you draw the line between being happy and being safe? According to her, she can go home and live out the rest of her days happy, but she won’t be safe. Or she can stay in assisted living and die miserable.

Any advice? Signed, Torn Dear Torn: You did not reveal the woman’s finances. First of all, if she can afford 24-hour care at home, I say let her go home. If she cannot afford that, then the answer to her is that her finances will not allow her to go home with care. Then you need to enlist the help of a social worker or mental health therapist to work with her in accepting her situation. There are people who will not be happy, no matter what you do for them. She may be one of those. Good luck.

Dear Old Bag: Just a note to say I enjoy your answers to letters. Having been a caregiver, I always wonder how you will reply to letters. A few years ago, I packed an elderly couple to move to Grand Junction.

The lady in her 80s was sweet and kind. She had dementia and could not remember. She wanted me to stay the night because she was lonely. Suddenly, I noticed her high school annual and I asked her if she wanted it packed. The look on her face was blank. Then she opened the book and was in the past. She sat for hours remembering old friends and good times. It was such a blessing for both of us. Sincerely, S.A. Parachute, Colorado.

Beating heart disease: Know the facts about statins.

H

eart disease is America’s number-one killer. Yet many of the negative outcomes associated with the disease are preventable, thanks largely to cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins.

Unfortunately, statins don’t work if patients don’t take them, yet as many as three-quarters of patients stop taking their statin medication within the first year.

This has to change. In the quartercentury since statins were first introduced, dozens of clinical trials in hundreds of thousands of patients have shown that statins can prevent heart attacks and stroke, and help save lives. In one study of over 17,000 patients in 26 countries, statin users had 54 percent fewer heart attacks, 48 percent fewer strokes, and 20 percent fewer deaths, compared with patients who took a placebo.

Statins work mainly by reducing patients’ levels of LDL, or “bad,” cholesterol by as much as 50 percent. High levels of LDL can lead to atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, which is the primary cause of heart disease.

So why do so many patients stop taking their statins or refuse them in the first place?

A common concern is the myth that statins cause liver damage.

Statins can increase the blood levels of some liver enzymes, and so it has been assumed that they can harm the liver, or even lead to liver failure.

But according to a recent study in "The Lancet,” a prestigious medical journal, liver damage “is a myth.”

The study found that patients taking statins suffered no additional liver damage compared to people who didn’t. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has even removed the recommendation that liver enzymes be monitored routinely in statin-taking patients.

Another major concern about statins is that they can cause diabetes. Statins can indeed raise blood

sugar levels slightly and thus increase the risk of developing diabetes by about 10 percent or so.

A recent article in the “Journal of the American College of Cardiology” found that statin use only increased the incidence of diabetes in patients who already had multiple risk factors for the disease.

Statins reduce the risk of cardiovascular events even in patients who develop diabetes, and the risk-benefit ratio of statin use remains positive even for patients at high risk of developing diabetes.

Another concern is how statins interact with other medications. As many as 75 percent of medications, including warfarin, beta-blockers, antidepressants and anti-HIV medications, are metabolized through one set of pathways in the liver, called Cytochrome 450 (CYP450). When these, and some other medications, are taken with statins, there can be “unanticipated adverse reactions or therapeutic failures.” A recent survey of over 10,000 statin users found that 84 percent were taking a prescription, over-the-counter medication or dietary supplement that could adversely react with their statin.

Patients prescribed statins should ask their doctors whether the medicines or supplements they’re taking can adversely interact with statins.

Such conversations can help choose the best statin treatment and result in a personalized treatment plan.

This year, 785,000 Americans will have a heart attack, and nearly 600,000 will die of heart disease.

That’s more than one person every second.

Statins are our most important tool in the fight against heart disease. But patients can and should be proactive by having their cholesterol levels checked and by following up with their doctors to start or continue whatever treatments may be needed, whether they are changes to diet and lifestyle or the use of a statin or other medication regimens. ■

Oh, my aching feet!

M

y friend had been experiencing a great deal of pain in his feet. He decided, therefore, that the best thing to do was to give away his cache of well-worn shoes to Goodwill and purchase some new ones. Reluctantly, he did just that. After several days, the practically new, gently worn shoes hurt his feet in the exact same places the old ones had. He tried to return them, but alas, the department store refused to refund his money.

Score another win for the neighborhood Goodwill bin, a worthy cause, to be sure.

Desperate to ease the pain in his aching appendages, my friend decided it was high time to visit a specialty store for people with problem feet. When asked by the saleswomen to step on a foot-measuring device, my friend declined and stated emphatically, “I have worn a size 10 since high school and I still do.” The woman politely insisted, for clearly she had heard these same words from hesitant customers before. The man, eager to prove the nice, but misinformed, person wrong, agreed to remove his shoes and socks and be measured. To his great surprise both feet measured size 12. With an increase of two sizes, it’s no wonder every pair of shoes, old and new, were torture for his feet.

My friend received an earful of useful, albeit depressing information, that afternoon. Not only do our feet grow as we age, the helpful salesperson informed him, but so do our noses and ears. Who knew?

In a special to the Los Angeles Times, writer Mary Beckman reported the following.

“One thing that doesn’t shrink when people get older is feet. They enlarge.

More specifically, they flatten. The feet’s tendons and ligaments lose some of

their elasticity and don’t hold the bones and joints together as tidily.

When combined with other agingrelated changes, the feet can encounter limits to how much use or abuse they can take. The most obvious age-related change, however, can be overlooked by many people. A 2006 study looked at the footwear choices of 440 patients at a U.S. veterans’ affairs hospital, most of whom were men, averaging about 67 years old and found that only 25 percent of them were wearing the right size shoe.”

The article went on to quote Dr. Mark Caselli, an adjunct professor at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine in New York City, who said, “Over the years, people tend to remember their Social Security number and their shoe size, but they’re remembering their shoe size from when they were 25 years old.”

So there you have the facts about feet. I’ll save the less-than-attractive details about aging ears and noses for another time. Suffice it to say, I will be paying more attention to my own extremities going forward.

Writing this story reminded me that I have a big garbage bag in my basement filled with shoes that date back more years than I care to remember. Why, you ask, have I held on to these relics from the past? Answer: I took the advice of an elderly aunt-by-marriage way back in 1965. She advised me to save shoes I really loved because in 40 years or so they would come back in style. Surprise! What she forgot to tell me was that I would probably not be able to squeeze my dainty size 9s into any of them. Although these old favorites are most likely destined for the Goodwill bin in the near future, at least I’ll have the satisfaction of knowing why. ■

e were pleasantly surprised at the number of registrants at the 12th annual Western Colorado Senior Games this year. The City of Grand Junction’s recreation coordinator, Lorie Gregor, said, "This was our biggest year in terms of participation." They will have to work harder next year to find space to accommodate the growing number of participants and events.

The Western Colorado Senior Games is an annual competition put on by the City of Grand Junction’s Parks and Recreation Department every August.

Speaking of participation, Gregor said 95 percent of all who registered read about the games in the BEACON. Anyone age 50 and better can participate in the senior games. You don’t even have to live on the Western Slope… or even in Colorado. This event attracts competitors from the Front Range and even Wyoming.

Attesting to the fact that age is just a number, seniors age 50 to 90+ entered events such as bocce ball, golf, cribbage, basketball, track, swimming, billiards, bowling and, of course, pickleball.

Thank you to all the participants and supporters of the Western Colorado Senior Games. If you are one of the contenders below, give yourself a pat on the back. If you see a name you know, congratulate them. If you didn’t participate, consider joining in the fun next year! ■

Laughing Matters First wedding Submitted by Sharon Kelley A little girl attended her first wedding. As the bride walked down the aisle, the little girl whispered to her mother and asked, “Why is the bride dressed in white?”

Her mother replied, “Because white is the color of happiness and today is the happiest day of her life.”

The little girl thought about this for a moment and said, “So why is the groom wearing black?”

Church fun Submitted by Karen Jones A little girl, dressed in her Sunday best, was running as fast as she could, trying not to be late to Bible class.

As she ran, she prayed, “Dear Lord, please don’t let me be late!”

She was still running and praying when she tripped on a curb and fell, getting her clothes dirty and tearing her dress. She got up, brushed herself off and started running.

Worst day of my life Submitted by Edward Daniels There I was sitting at the bar staring at my drink when a large, troublemaking biker stepped up next to me, grabbed my drink and gulped it down in one swig.

I stared at him, shocked at what just happened.

“Well, whatcha’ gonna do about it?” he said menacingly as I burst into tears.

“Come on, man,” the biker said. “I didn’t think you’d cry. I can’t stand to see a man crying.”

“This is the worst day of my life,” I said. “I’m a complete failure. I was late to a meeting and my boss fired me. When I went to the parking lot, I found my car had been stolen and I don’t have any insurance. I left

I found my wife with another man and then my dog bit me. So I came to this bar to work up the courage to put an end to it all. I buy a drink, I drop a capsule in and sit here watching the poison dissolve, and then you show up and drink the whole thing!

The silent treatment Submitted by Pat Brady A man and his wife were giving each other the silent treatment. The man realized that the next day, he would need his wife to wake him at 5 a.m. for an early morning business flight.

Not wanting to be the first to break the silence and lose, he wrote on a piece of paper: “Please wake me up at 5 a.m.”

He left it where he knew she would find it.

The next morning, the man woke up, only to discover it was 9 a.m. and he had missed his flight. Furious, he was about to get up to see why his wife didn’t wake him, when he noticed a piece of paper by the bed.

D

o you need your personal battery recharged? If so, then plug in to Doris Blake. At 74, this feisty globetrotter recently completed traveling to all seven continents.

Just 4 feet 10 inches tall, Blake showed her humorous side when she said, “I am not short, I am vertically challenged,” and “I’m not an old hen, I’m a senior chick!”

Blake’s desire to learn inspired the hundreds of trips she has taken.

“I want to learn and I don’t want to learn it by osmosis,” Blake said. “The best way to learn is by observing. We have two eyes, two ears, two nostrils and only one mouth, but it’s what we

use the most.”

Traveling has been in Blake’s blood for most of her adult life. As a single mom, traveling was a gift she gave her son and daughter. Prior to Blake’s retirement in 1994, she had been to all U.S. states except Alaska with her children.

Some trips they did together.

Others were made special by taking turns traveling alone with each of them. She took a month-long trip with her son, Michael, to Peru and Bolivia. With her daughter, Jenni, she traveled to Tanzania, which was on their bucket lists, as well as Belize and Guatemala.

children to travel has inspired them to continue with travels of their own.

Her son was a flight attendant for 25 years. Her daughter and son-in-law also travel extensively.

The desire to learn and her 30-year career as a teacher went hand in hand throughout Blake’s life.

“I started with grade school,” Blake said, “but they didn’t understand my jokes.”

At one point she took a break from teaching and worked as an ambulance and flight for life EMT for five years. She then combined her EMT and education experience by teaching middle school health followed by high school health consulting.

Blake took a leave of absence during the 1990-1991 school year to teach science and math at a private school in Costa Rica. A 7.5 earthquake and some political unrest brought her home a little sooner than expected.

After her retirement in 1994, Blake began traveling extensively outside the U.S. She calls retirement “a horizontal recreational move.”

Choosing your trip when the world is at your door.

“I put up a map of the world, closed my eyes, spun around and pointed my finger at the map,” Blake said. “It landed on Iceland, so that was my first guided trip. It was a way to start, but was the only time I used that method.”

Although guided trips have their advantages, Blake reminisced about her favorite travels she took in her late 50s and 60s, when she traveled alone, staying at hostels with backpackers. She did eight trips this way in New Zealand and Australia for six weeks at a time, all with just an 18-pound backpack.

Blake met a travel companion in Thailand,who she took five trips with. She met her current travel companion in China and they have made eight trips together.

Traveling to all seven continents did not just happen.

“It has been a goal,” Blake said.

“Antarctica was on the top of the list but it ended up being the last continent I visited.”

She completed this goal in December of 2012.

“My favorite trip of all was Antarctica,” Blake said. “I fell in love with the icebergs. They are so colorful and gorgeous, and of course the penguins. Bonuses on this trip were no shopping and no cell phones. Just peacefulness and beauty.”

Blake has been to many countries multiple times, including the Galapagos and Ecuador, many parts of Africa, New Zealand and Australia. She recently returned from four countries near the Adriatic Sea, which used to make up Yugoslavia: Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro and Slovenia. South Africa is her next trip this fall.

With so many trips under her belt, you would think it would be hard for her to choose her favorite or most unusual experience.

“I crashed a wedding in Vietnam once,” she said.

But the best story was when she and her son were in Peru celebrating his 39th birthday and staying at a backpacker’s hostel. As they passed through a restaurant, a woman called her over to ask a question. The question was whether Blake had been in New Zealand at a certain place and time years before. Blake told the woman she was there. The woman had recognized Blake from that trip years ago, half way around the world. ■

If you don’t, not to worry. Volunteers in the Mesa County Library literacy program don’t have to be fluent in any language but English, even though they tutor students from 32 different countries.

Head of Literary Services Karen Kllanxhja said those who love reading often make good tutors, regardless of the student’s native tongue.

The literacy program started in 1987, teaching students to read, write and compute in English. Now the ability to use technology has been added. Students have many reasons for seeking help. Some want to go to college and even though they can speak English fluently, they have trouble reading it. Or parents may want to be able to communicate effectively with their children’s teachers and be a part of their education.

Native English speakers who read at a low level, as well as those whose first language is not English, are all welcome in the program.

“We had one 78-year-old man,” Kllanxhja said, “who was functionally illiterate, yet had held down a good job, married and raised a family, and when he retired, decided to learn to read.”

Kllanxhja said that Spanish speakers make up the highest percentage of students, followed by Chinese

speakers. Students must be at least 16 years old and cannot be enrolled in any district school. The work is usually one on one and goals are set by the student. A basic curriculum and training are in place. The program requires a six-month commitment from the volunteer, but the schedule is flexible.

Tutors get as much out of the process as the students. They develop relationships while working individually or in small groups with students.

“The best part of the job is interacting with the students,” tutoring veteran Vicky Bray said. “They want to learn and that makes all the difference.”

Bray teaches small groups and sometimes has to remind students not to lapse into their native tongue among themselves.

“The students help each other,” she said. “They become friends and hang out.”

Bray said some students drop out but usually come back when they can.

“The students give more than they get,” she said.

Students can also use the Rosetta Stone programs on the computers in the language lab. The library also has CDs and books for those seeking to learn a multitude of languages.

f you are so fortunate to take a scheduled tour of the Hotel Colorado, you may see the two ovens in the basement that were allegedly used as crematoriums for the military patients who died there during World War II. The U.S. Navy commissioned the hotel on July 5, 1943, and used it as a hospital for injured Marines, Coast Guard and Seamen. It served over 6,500 patients prior to being decommissioned in 1946.

According to Tom Noel in a Denver Post article in 2008, the bones left over from the crematory may have been used to reinforce the hotel’s stone and rubble foundation. During the time the hotel served as a naval hospital, a chambermaid was reportedly caught in a lover’s triangle and murdered by a jealous lover. Some say her screams can still be heard in areas of the hotel. The room in which she died cannot be rented and serves as a storage room.

At its 1966 low point, the hotel sold on the tax delinquent auction block for $244,899—a third of its 1893 cost. Since then, a series of owners have placed the hotel on the National Register of Historic Places (2007) and have pursued restoration. Devereux’s vision now continues under the stewardship of David Storm and Providence Hospitality Partners. Their goal is to restore historic hotel properties to their former splendor, remaining faithful to the original design and ambiance while adding modern conveniences and special touches. The hotel now offers 80 classic rooms, 20 family rooms, and 30 suites, all with Victorian charm. This year is the hotel’s 120th birthday, with historic suites renting per night for $120 and up.

Exceptional suites available at the hotel are the following: Molly Brown Suite – This historically themed suite recounts the life of Colorado’s Margaret Brown with rare pictures of her many travels, includ-

ing her history-making trip on the Titanic. This multi-room suite boasts two private balconies.

Bell Tower Suite – The charming parlor, antique furnished dining room, king bedroom and Jacuzzi bathroom are replete with gracious Victorian design. Guests may climb their private spiral staircase to the bell tower balcony that overlooks the scenic views of the entire Roaring Fork Valley to Mount Sopris.

Roosevelt Suite – Sleep in Teddy Roosevelt’s bed! This was his room in 1905 when he visited Glenwood Springs. It includes an extended private balcony overlooking the courtyard where he spoke to Glenwood’s citizens before heading back to Washington. Pictures throughout the suite illustrate the life and times of the president.

Devereux Suite – Place yourself in the homelike setting of silver baron and Hotel Colorado founder Walter Devereux. This expansive threebedroom, three-bathroom suite is the perfect gathering place for small groups.

Have you considered visiting the Hotel Colorado during Christmastime? The hotel’s annual holiday lighting ceremony takes place each year the weekend after Thanksgiving, when more than one million lights bring the historic hotel to life. This free event includes live entertainment and a visit from Santa Claus.

Various Christmas scenes are placed throughout the hotel. An 8-foot-tall gingerbread house that took the hotel’s chef three weeks to create is only one example.

Glenwood Springs is an excellent Western Slope destination, compelling visitors to explore the Fairy Caves, swim in the hot springs, hike to Doc Holiday’s grave or Hanging Lake, visit the local museums or art galleries, or photograph any of a number of scenic, nearby sites. A Hotel Colorado stay might add a little magic to the overall delight of the excursion.

Rehabilitation at its nest

Well, the whole idea grew out of an old Irish myth about a man named “Stingy Jack.”

According to legend, Stingy Jack invited the devil to have a drink with him but didn’t want to pay for the drinks.

Therefore, in a burst of creativity he convinced the devil to turn himself into a coin. But then, Stingy Jack, true to his nature, decided instead to keep the coin and put it in his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the devil from changing back into his original self.

Jack did eventually give the devil back his freedom but only after he had elicited from him the promise that he would not bother him for a year and that if Jack should die, he would not claim his soul.

The next year, Jack tricked the

t’s Halloween time and little people will soon come knocking at my door yelling “trick or treat.” I’ll give out candy and they will give me back smiles, and that warm, fuzzy feeling will be alive and well.

Meanwhile, my windows will have been smiling at them as they come up my walkway. One or two will cry out, “Jack-o-lanterns!”

Between the little witches and dancing costumes of so many varieties, I will have one more reason to have a love affair with fall.

I like pumpkins because they are so yellow and bright, and make even the drabbest of fields come alive. So many of them seem ready to break into a smile, which as jack-o-lanterns, they will soon most certainly do.

They eventually end up with different destinies—some as delicious pies and others jacko-lanterns.

And yes, there are happy jacko-lanterns as well as those designed to scare the bejeebers out of you.

I guess you could say that when they began to leave the fields, they face an identity crisis.

That is, until he promised Jack he would not bother him for 10 more years.

Soon afterwards, Jack died, but God would not allow such an unsavory character into heaven. And the devil, keeping his promise not to claim his soul, would not let him into hell either. Jack was now a man without a place to reside and was sent out into the utter darkness with only a burning coal to light his way. In an oft-repeated ending to this story, Jack continues to roam the world inside a turnip with a burning coal beside him.

So in Ireland and Scotland, they began to make not smiling pumpkins, but scary renditions of the vehicle in which Stingy Jack continues to live.

So whether it is pumpkins in Amer-

ica or large beets in England, it is like all traditions—a work in progress. As for me, I’ll take a smiling pumpkin any day. ■

Everything gets better with age at Winefest

t was the perfect day for handcrafted food and local wine at the recent Colorado Mountain Winefest in Palisade. The event spanned the weekend of September 19-22 but Saturday’s festival in the park was a highlight for wine tasters, culinary connoisseurs and those wanting to learn more about the wine industry.

Colorado Mountain Winefest is the biggest fundraiser for the Colorado Association for Viticulture and Enology (CAVE), a nonprofit based in Palisade that supports Colorado grape growers and wine makers.

“What I love about Colorado Mountain Winefest is the energy,” CAVE Executive Director Cassidee Shull said. “We attract visitors from all over the world and share what we have here. It’s such a gem.”

All wineries that participate in the festival are from Colorado. Colorado Mountain Winefest started in 1992 with five wineries in a small park in

Palisade. This year, almost 50 wineries participated in the festival’s current home at Riverbend Park.

Grand Junction residents Scott and Alice Betts, both over age 55, have attended the festival almost since its beginning.

“We got involved in 1993 when we moved to Palisade,” Alice said. “Scott was in a band and was one of their musicians.”

Even after years of wine tasting, the Betts can’t decide on a favorite wine or vineyard.

“Every year we find something else that we’ve never had before,” Alice said. “Although for the last few years, we’ve always gone back to Boulder Creek and bought their Murphy’s Choice wine. It’s very different.”

Aside from tasting the fruit wines, Alice likes to taste the jams, spreads, vinegars and other items.

“I tend to taste the heavier red wines,” Scott said. “I focus on one type of wine to taste for the day until I find one that I like. Then maybe I

will taste some of the white wines.”

The Betts like to try wines from other areas.

“We like wines from the Russian River valley, we like French wine, we like… we like wine,” Scott said.

Five ways to protect your computer Ask the computer guy

I

t’s one thing to be in a battle and be able to see and assess the enemy. But to be in a battle and not perceive the enemy at all is a battle that’s difficult to win. But here are some ways to help you win your battles and protect yourself against threats to your computer.

1. Protect it from obvious threats like water and heat.

Let’s start with the basics. Computers don’t like to swim. Water is the number one enemy to a computer. So evaluate the risk and if water is nearby, consider relocating the computer. Heat ranks very high on the list of threats as well.

But the damage is far more subtle and slow to manifest. Keep your computer dry and cool for best results.

2. Buy a surge protector.

Electrical surges or spikes account for a sizable part of our repairs during this time of year. Some are obvious, like a couple knowing their home was struck by lightning. Others are much more subtle but equally destructive.

A good surge protector today costs under $50. You can add the battery backup feature for an additional $75.

Recently, I had a business owner come to me and thank me for encouraging him to purchase a surge protector for all of his computers. His office was struck by lightning, which killed a refrigerator, a door buzzer, some printers and a couple of other electronics, but all of the

computers were saved—quite a good investment for $39.95.

3. Avoid moving your computer.

Any time a computer is moved, there is a chance that the hard drive may become partially or wholly nonfunctional. They are remarkably resilient to little movements but large drops or slams can result in the failure of your hard drive, especially if it is older. Treat your computer very delicately if you need to bring it in for repairs.

4. Keep it out of sight. Lock your doors.

Physical theft is a threat that most people do not plan for and are especially vulnerable to. If you own a laptop, keep your car locked at all times when transporting it. Keep your doors locked at home to make a would-be thief work harder to pick up his loot.

Let’s go for a drive! Locals admire the autumn landscapes of western Colorado

T

he beginning of October is a great time to take a drive in western Colorado and see the beautiful autumn colors before winter sets in.

Many locals participate in fall color drives, touring the Grand Mesa and other surrounding areas to admire the colors and take photos.

Grand Junction photographer Rob Kurtzman takes advantage of such opportunities. He mostly photographs landscapes, but doesn’t limit himself.

“I do all types of photography from sweeping panoramas to close up shots of rocks and flowers,” Kurtz-

man, 57, said. “But I enjoy the grandsweeping ones the most because they are more challenging.”

For Kurtzman, this time of year is a marvelous occasion to go up into the mountains and photograph.

“It is nice in Colorado because you can go into the mountains and see

the spectacular aspens, then go into the canyons and see the beautiful cottonwood trees,” he said.

Being able to look at things differently is Kurtzman’s favorite part of photography.

“When you are trying to take a picture, you look at things much more

closely, looking at the visual elements and how to fit it in a scene,” he said.

“When I’m out at the Colorado National Monument or local conservation areas, the spectacular landscapes are awe-inspiring. But the challenge is how to capture an image that will elicit the same experience as when I was actually there.”

Fellow photographer Dave Wadsworth, 66, has always been interested in photography. But it wasn’t until he moved to Colorado 20 years ago that he was led to professional photography.

“My next-door neighbor was the editor at the Fruita Times and he saw me taking pictures and asked me to take some for him,” Wadsworth said.

He likes to do posed photographs, but on the artistic end, he describes his work as impressionistic.

mountains, he takes pictures of the aspens, but tries to find colors other than gold—like red and orange—which he feels makes better photographs.

“If I can combine them with wildlife, so much the better,” he said. “But that can be tough to do because hunting season and cars spook the animals.”

Getting to meet new people is what Wadsworth enjoys the most about photography.

Day of the Dead - Dia de los Muertos Richard W. Lewis, Funeral Director Day of the Dead festivals vary and customs and celebrations will vary from country to country, region to region, and town to town. The night comes alive with the smells of the incense and flowers and the flickering of candles. It is a beautiful celebration that has been handed down through thousands of years.

During these celebrations, or festivals, it is believed that departed souls return to earth. This holiday is not related to Halloween, but to the Catholic’s All Saints and All Souls days, which are November 1st (celebrating children) and 2nd (celebrating adults).

Families remember special things about the deceased family member(s) and use those as inspiration for designing and building an altar. Altars are displayed in the home or at a cemetery headstone. Children are told stories that have been handed down through the family for generations.

The altars are usually built on October 30th and 31st. They are covered with the deceased’s favorite foods – usually tamales, fruits, vegetables; chocolate or candies; statues of saints; crosses or crucifixes; photos of the deceased; flowers – usually marigolds; candles and copal – incense. The colors of the candles have meaning as well. Purple to represents pain, pink to represent celebration, and white to symbolize hope. An extra candle is also lit to represent those that have no family to celebrate for them. It is believed that the spirits will consume the smells from the food, candles and incense.

Each altar will also contain: • WATER to quench the thirst and for purification • SALT to season the food and for purification • BREAD to represent the food needed for survival – called Pan de Muertos.

For those who hold celebrations at the grave(s) of the deceased, musicians may be hired to play the favorite songs of the dead. Graves are cleaned and repainted as well.

Finding stability in shifting seasons

T

he biblical author of Ecclesiastes, chapter 3, states the change of seasons in life very well: “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted… a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.”

As I said goodbye on the telephone to my elderly mother, I shook my head, reflecting on what she said about Dad’s latest antics due to his memory problems. I wondered, “Is this a time to weep or a time to laugh?” Perhaps time allows for both, though it grows shorter for our family every day.

According to the MetLife Mature Market Institute, “The percentage of adult children providing personal care and/or financial assistance to a parent has more than tripled over the past 15 years.”

Nearly 10 million adult children are caring for aging parents.

So many inter-generational families like mine, are journeying through a maze of options and complex decisions related to caregiving and care-receiving challenges. But as a family system, we find ourselves at dead ends of confusion, miscommunication and conflict. How can adult children and their aging parents find their way through the maze together and experience the happiness, health and hope they all long for?

Here are a few tips that I have picked up along the way.

Pray. Pray not just for health or strength, but share your fears and other “what ifs” with our loving Father. Surrender your will and agenda as an act of trust and faith in God, who also loves your family.

Work together. Shift from toe-totoe conflicts about difficult changes to shoulder-to-shoulder work, facing the changes together. For example, a family who was in conflict with their mom about needing to give up her driving privileges due to limited vi-

sion shifted their perspective: “Mom, we wish you could still drive safely, too. It would give you freedom and save us time. Yet, due to the doctor’s advice, we’re not allowed to let you drive anymore.”

Acceptance. I recently read an article about dealing with caregiver stress. It advised the reader to practice acceptance. When faced with the unfairness of a loved one’s illness or the burden of caregiving there’s often a need to make sense of the situation and ask, “Why?” You can spend a tremendous amount of energy dwelling on things you can’t change and for which there are no clear answers.

At the end of the day, you won’t feel any better. Try to avoid the emotional trap of feeling sorry for yourself or searching for someone to blame. Focus instead on accepting the situation and looking for ways it can help you grow as a person.

Focus on the things you can control. Not in the other person or circumstances, but within yourself.

Focus on the way you choose to react to challenges.

Find the silver lining. Think about the ways that this season of life is making you stronger or how it has brought you closer to someone.

Think about how supporting family allows you to give back and show your love.

Share your feelings. Expressing what you’re going through can be very cathartic, even if there’s nothing you can do to alter the situation. Talk to a friend, pastor or therapist about what you’re going through as a family caregiver.

Avoid tunnel vision. Don’t let caregiving take over your life. It’s easier to accept a difficult situation when there are other areas of your life that are rewarding. Invest in things that give you purpose; whether it’s your family, church, a favorite hobby or your career.

Precious are the people and the opportunities to care for one another, knowing that we are not alone, and the loss of one season means that another one is coming. ■

Expanding Medicaid: a foolish way to improve health care access

By Sally C. Pipes Expansion of Medicaid, the jointly run federal-state health plan for lowincome Americans, has long been an essential element of progressives’ vision for health care “reform.”

But it won’t work. Medicaid already suffers from serious problems, including perpetual cost overruns, doctors who increasingly refuse to accept patients covered by the program, and low quality of care. Expanding Medicaid will only exacerbate these issues while doing little to improve the health of the people it covers.

The debate over Medicaid expansion began in earnest in 2010, when the Affordable Care Act (ACA), otherwise known as Obamacare, became law. The ACA gave states incentives to expand their Medicaid programs by offering to cover 100 percent of the increased cost for the first three years and then 90 percent in subsequent years.

Originally, this was an offer of the “can’t be refused” variety. The ACA threatened to punish states that didn’t expand by rescinding federal Medicaid funds for which they were already eligible.

But in June 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the feds’ threat was unconstitutional. Twenty-one states have taken up the option and refused to expand their Medicaid operations.

(Colorado isn’t one of them.)

There’s good reason for their refusal. For starters, Medicaid patients often suffer from constrained access to care. Technically, they’re insured but they can’t find anyone to treat them. That’s because fewer and fewer doctors are participating in the program. Between 2010 and 2011, 33 percent of doctors decided not to accept new Medicaid patients, chiefly because the program’s reimbursement rates are too low.

Consequently, current beneficiaries have difficulty finding a physician who will accept their coverage.

Expanding the program will only exacerbate this state of affairs.

What’s more, the care beneficiaries receive doesn’t substantially improve their health. A major analysis of Oregon’s Medicaid program found “no significant improvements” in health outcomes for patients enrolled in the program. Researchers reported that Medicaid coverage had virtually no effect on blood pressure, cholesterol levels, or blood sugar, all risk factors for chronic conditions like heart disease and diabetes.

All this evidence suggests that expanding Medicaid won’t improve the health of the low-income Americans it’s supposed to help. But it will drive up costs for state taxpayers.

Supporters of the expansion claim that it’s essentially free for states, with the federal government picking up the entire tab initially and then the bulk of it soon after.

That’s hardly the case. California’s Legislative Analyst’s Office estimates that the expansion will yield between $300 million and $1.3 billion in new annual public costs by 2020.

The Congressional Budget Office puts the total cost to the states between 2014 and 2022 at $73 billion.

Medicaid expansion will also strain the economy and slow job creation. A new paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research found that expanding the program actually discourages people from finding a job, because they no longer need to be employed to get coverage. The study estimated that the planned state-level expansions of Medicaid would cause between 530,000 and 940,000 people not to seek employment.

Fortunately, many states aren’t buying the false promise of Medicaid expansion. They know that it will prove wasteful and do little to improve access to care for low-income patients.

Expanding the Medicaid program is a bad strategy for improving health care in America. ■

Volunteers on patrol for patient safety

e humans are a proud bunch.

Sometimes we even put ourselves in danger because we want to do “it” ourselves. Unfortunately, this independence can lead to injury for hospitalized patients.

Many people in the hospital are at risk for falling. Maybe they just had surgery, they’re weak or unsteady. A specially trained group of St. Mary’s volunteers is working diligently with hospital staff to keep those patients safe.

The volunteers talk to patients and family members so they understand how important it is to get help getting out of bed. All patients at risk for falling wear a yellow wrist band, but volunteers also make sure they are wearing the yellow socks they are provided. When the patient throws back the covers to get out of bed, those bright socks remind them to call for help.

Volunteers also do visual room inspections—are the call button, patient’s cell phone, magazine or book close enough to reach without leaning or getting out of bed? Did a visitor leave a stack of magazines on the floor? Is the cord from the charging cell phone stretched across the room? Volunteers are trained to spot danger and get it fixed.

Thanks to several safety initiatives, including these volunteers’ efforts, the number of St. Mary’s patients injured in falls decreased 73 percent since September 2012.
