May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month

A national campaign to raise awareness about skin cancer prevention and early detection.

Basal cell carcinoma is a common type of skin cancer. Early on, it may not have any noticeable symptoms, but watch for a small, translucent, shiny bump like a pearl, a raised flesh, or pink colored nodule with tiny blood vessels on it. It may itch or feel tender, and it can bleed or scab.

Squamous cell skin cancer can look scaly, red, rough, thickened, or even ulcerated, and can often crust, itch, or bleed.

Melanoma - Remember ABCDE - Asymmetrical, Border irregularity, Color variations, Diameter typically greater than a pencil eraser, Evolving - new or changing mole Actinic keratosis is a precancerous skin condition from prolonged sun exposure. These are generally rough, scaly, and pink or red, and in sun-exposed areas like the face, scalp, neck, and arms. Left untreated, the risk of actinic keratoses turning into a squamous cell carcinoma is about 5% to 10%.

General surgery providers can perform surgeries for skin cancer, particularly for melanoma and high-risk non-melanoma cancers.

Surgical excision carries the highest cure rates for all skin cancers and is the first-line treatment for melanomas and high-risk nonmelanoma cancers.

Excision involves removing the entire visible tumor and a margin of surrounding healthy tissue in a single step. It’s a straightforward procedure that can be performed quickly under local anesthesia in our office. Excision is often used for less-sensitive areas like the torso, arms, and legs, or smaller, simpler tumors. Excision may be more cost-effective and convenient.

Excision may result in larger scars compared to Mohs surgery because of the wider tissue removal. Some Melanomas and large skin cancers need wide local excision, which is where a margin of surrounding healthy tissue is removed to reduce the risk of recurrence. The removed tissue is sent to a pathologist for examination to ensure that all cancer cells have been eliminated.

Skin lesions can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from other skin conditions. If you notice any of the above symptoms, it’s recommended to consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment. Don’t forget to get your yearly skin exams with your primary care provider or dermatologist.

t this year’s Grand Junction BeaconFest, more than 2,000 people poured into the Grand Junction Convention Center for a day full of entertainment, helpful resources and exciting giveaways at Colorado’s largest and funnest celebration of age!

Main stage entertainment kicked off with a lively performance by Peggy Malone, followed by the smooth Latin guitar of Javier de los Santos, the swinging hits of Wild Flight and the soulful vocals of Donny Morales.

Meanwhile, curious seniors filled our seminar rooms to hear from local experts on important topics like Medicare, fraud prevention, dental health, medical breakthroughs and paying for home care.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of our Volunteer of the Year Award. BEACON readers selected Elaine Taylor for her tireless work improving health access in the Grand Valley through the

Alongside her, 12 other exceptional volunteers were recognized on stage for their selfless contributions to local nonprofits.

As if the seminars, live entertainment and vendor booths weren’t enticing enough, attendees were excited for the chance to win door prizes every 30 minutes. We gave away everything from gift baskets and restaurant gift cards to rounds of golf, oil changes, bowling and movie passes. A big thank-you to the generous businesses that donated these prizes and helped make the drawings fun for everyone!

hat an incredible time we had at BeaconFest! Seeing the Grand Junction Convention Center packed with smiling faces reminded me why we do what we do here at the BEACON. Seniors came by the hundreds— hugging friends they hadn’t seen in ages, dancing, laughing and celebrating age!

I watched people chatting with vendors, joining clubs and discovering resources they didn’t know existed. I also saw businesses and volunteers stepping up to serve and support the older adults in our community.

That’s what BeaconFest is all about—and really, what the BEACON is all about—living your best life after 50!

One of the day’s biggest highlights was announcing our Volunteer of the Year. A retired nurse and founder of the Good Samaritan Free Clinic, Elaine Taylor serves as its volunteer executive director, dedicating her time and talents to providing medical care for uninsured and underserved patients. She didn’t take on this work for recognition, but it was an honor to recognize her nonetheless.

What I admire most about Elaine—and about all of our community’s volunteers—is that she saw a need and stepped up to help.

Our community is full of people with the experience and passion to make a difference.

LOCAL SENIOR MAKES MENTAL HEALTH FILM Another event I want to highlight from our calendar is happening on Thursday, May 15.

Earlier this year, I met 77-year-old Linda Stout, who told me about a powerful documentary she was bringing to the community.

“The Invisible Patient” explores the hidden struggles of navigating the rural mental healthcare system—something many families, especially in Western Colorado, know all too well. The film will be shown at CMU’s Asteria Theatre, 864 Bunting Ave., at 6:30 p.m., followed by a panel discussion with the filmmakers (Linda worked closely with a group of CMU students on this), participants in the film and mental health experts. Admission is $5.

I now play in several orchestras in the Denver area, but GJSO was my first community orchestra experience and the Wubbens were a memorable part of that!

hat better way to spend quality time with your grandkids than a refreshing hike in the woods or a stroll along the river?

Exploring nature together is fun, educational and a great way to connect with each other and the outdoors. Every trail offers opportunities for discovery and adventure. Try these hiking activities to make your next outing one your grandkids will always remember. Just make sure to allow plenty of time for breaks!

HUNT FOR ROCKS AND MINERALS Shorelines and trails often offer a variety of stones. Before you go, research which rocks and minerals are abundant in the area, then have everyone pick a few to scout for. Pack a small divided container, a rock and mineral guide and a magnifying glass for examining the colors and textures up close. As you identify stones and minerals, discuss their uses and other neat facts.

Try this hike: Mica Mine, a 3-mile roundtrip trail in Bangs Canyon in Grand Junction, is known for its historic mine and opportunities to find mica and quartz. The trail follows a creek bed and offers scenic views of the canyon.

Try this hike: Warner Point Nature Trail, a 1.5-mile out-and-back trail near Montrose in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, is a scenic trail with interpretive signs about the park’s geology.

LISTEN FOR BIRD SOUNDS Before you set out on your hike, borrow a CD from the library or play bird calls on YouTube to familiarize yourselves with local species. Use an audio recorder app on your phone to capture the sounds you hear on your hike. Later, play detective: Replay the recordings at home and research any unfamiliar sounds to see if you can discover the makers of the mystery calls.

Try this hike: Visit the Audubon Nature Preserve, 610 Dike Road in Grand Junction.

Open to the public for walking and bird- and nature-watching, the preserve is home to a variety of species including bald eagles, bank swallows, belted kingfishers, black-billed magpies, black-headed grosbeaks and wood ducks. Other great birding areas include Connected Lakes, Highline State Park and Rabbit Valley.

Try this hike: Chipeta Lake in Montrose is one of the best birding spots in the Uncompahgre Valley. Numerous duck species can be seen from fall through spring. A variety of songbirds can be found in the shrubs and trees during migration and summer.

GIVE YOUR GRANDKIDS A CAMERA Give each child a camera or smartphone and set out to capture nature’s wonders. Plan ahead

what you’ll photograph: towering trees, colorful butterflies, animal tracks or tiny critters. Turn it into a scavenger hunt or a game of I Spy. When you get home, print your favorite shots and create a scrapbook.

SPOT WILDLIFE BIG AND SMALL

IDENTIFY TREES, FLOWERS AND NEW GROWTH Bring a tree and flower guidebook to help identify plants along the trail using clues like leaf shape, bark texture and trunk size. Look closely at the ground, too, for wildflowers and other native plants. Each hike, explore a different trail or area and notice what plants grow in different soils, climates and seasons. Carefully brush away ground cover to find seeds or seedlings just starting to take root. Talk about how seeds travel by wind or by clinging to animal fur. Notice how some plants have evolved natural defenses like thorns or tough leaves to survive.

NAVIGATE LIKE A PRO Teach your grandchildren how to use a map, compass or even the sun to find their way.

Choose a trail system with branching paths and a map for real-time skill-building. For more fun, turn the excursion into a treasure hunt. Hide a small prize just off the trail under a bush or pile of leaves, mark the location on your map and let the journey begin.

LOCAL TIPS You can check out hiking maps and a free Check Out Colorado State Parks Pass from local libraries. Mesa County Libraries also offer a Colorado National Monument pass. Some libraries loan backpacks stocked with binoculars, a nature journal and outdoor activity guides.

Hike quietly through wooded areas and grassy clearings to spot wildlife. Watch for frogs by streams, chipmunks in trees, lizards darting between rocks and deer grazing nearby. Look closer and you’ll find insects, too—beetles, butterflies, ants and other tiny creatures. Bring a magnifying glass and an insect guide to get a closer look. Talk about how animals and insects survive, what they eat and where they live. Keep your eyes peeled for tracks and signs of recent visitors.

Try this hike: In Grand Junction, you can find deer and bighorn sheep along Monument Canyon Trail and other hikes in Colorado National Monument. Catch a rare view of free-roaming mustangs at the Little Book Cliffs Wild Horse Range, accessible from the Cameo exit past Palisade. This protected area is home to one of only a few wild horse herds in the United States.

Try this hike: Black Canyon of the Gun-

nison is home to bighorn sheep, black bears, bobcats, weasels, mule deer, elk and more. For the best chance to spot wildlife, take an early morning or late evening walk along Uplands Trail,

Make sure the outdoors remain enjoyable for everyone by following these Leave No Trace principles on your hike.

• Plan ahead and prepare: Know the regulations, check weather conditions and pack for emergencies.

• Travel on durable surfaces: Stick to trails, campsites, rock, gravel and dry grasses to protect nature. Walk single file in the middle of the trail, even when wet or muddy.

• Dispose of waste properly: Pack out all trash, leftover food and litter—yes, even toilet paper.

• Leave what you find: Preserve nature by leaving rocks, plants and other natural objects as you found them.

• Respect wildlife: Observe them from a distance. Never feed, approach or disturb animals, stay clear of nests and dens and back away if they seem stressed.

• Be considerate of others: Keep noise down, yield to others on the trail and respect everyone’s outdoor experience.

ou’ve dreamed of updating your home for a while now, but a full kitchen remodel or new flooring just isn’t in the budget. Don’t despair— there are plenty of ways to revitalize and update your home without breaking the bank. Check out these simple updates that’ll give your home a fresh look, inside and out. Once your project is complete, you’ll be dying to show off your beautiful abode to family and friends!

SPRUCE UP YOUR FRONT DOOR Difficulty: Moderate | Half-Day Project This is the first thing guests see when they walk up to your home. A high-end wooden door adds charm, but even a fresh coat of paint in a bold, inviting color can dramatically boost curb appeal.

If you plan to replace the door, make sure to have someone to help you.

REPAIR WINDOW SCREENS Difficulty: Easy | Under 1 hour per screen Torn screens are an eyesore—and easy to fix.

Pick up a screen-repair kit and a rolling tool at your local hardware store. Or, drop them off at a hardware store that offers screen replacement services at a reasonable price. They’ll usually have it ready for you in just a couple of days.

Tile is beautiful and durable, but grimy grout makes it look dated. Make your tile floor or shower look new again by cleaning the grout.

You can easily revive it with a homemade cleaning solution using ingredients you likely already have on hand.

Try this DIY grout cleaner: Mix 1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap with ½ cup baking soda and ¼ cup hydrogen peroxide. Apply BEFORE AFTER the mixture to the grout lines and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes.

Then, scrub with a stiff-bristled brush and rinse with cool water. This foaming paste gently lifts away dirt, kills bacteria (thanks to the hydrogen peroxide) and removes stains—especially on flat surfaces like tile floors.

It requires a little elbow grease, and because the solution needs time to soak, it may be less effective on vertical surfaces like backsplashes where the paste can slide down before it sets.

Still, for floors and other horizontal surfaces, it’s a gentle, affordable and chemical-free option that gets the job done.

When parents resist talking about the future I t’s hard when your parents are getting older, their house is falling into disrepair, and they keep saying everything’s fine. A lot of adult children end up feeling stuck—worried about their parents’ safety, health or finances, but unable to get them to talk about it or the future. Every time you bring it up, they shut down the conversation—or worse, accuse you of meddling.

Many seniors resist these conversations—and it’s easy to understand why. Aging often brings real challenges, like declining health or memory issues. No one likes to feel like they’re losing control, especially not to their own kids.

Autonomy plays a big role here.

When their independence feels threatened, it’s easy to become defensive. Some may even suspect that family members have ulterior motives. And unfortunately, that fear isn’t always misplaced—family members are statistically the most common perpetrators of financial exploitation against elders.

Still, conversations about health, safety and planning for the future are important.

Begin by improving the quality of your conversations. Focus on how you talk with them, not just what you talk about. Are your conversations open and supportive or do they feel more like nagging? Are you listening or jumping in with solutions?

Position yourself as a helper, not an adversary. Try easing into things by being helpful in small ways.

Offer to take care of a task here and there, and ask what else they could use help with. Avoid arguing or trying to take control. Focus on

building trust by listening with empathy. When your parents see you as someone safe and helpful, they’ll be more open to your ideas—especially the hard ones.

Start the conversations early— before there’s a crisis. Rather than waiting until you’re worried about their driving, ask what concerns they might have down the road.

Do they worry about getting lost?

Missing a stop sign?

Ask how they’d handle a fall at home or what they’d do if something like the garage door stopped working. These questions feel less confrontational and give you a chance to offer help, like, “Would you like me to find someone who could fix that?”

Unfortunately, questions about death and money are trickier.

That’s why it helps to keep things light and indirect. Instead of asking if they’ve made a will, you might say, “Hey, I just updated mine.

Want to see it?” That simple gesture can set the stage for a more serious talk later on.

Even with the best intentions, though, some parents just won’t budge. In those cases, be patient and wait for natural opportunities to revisit the topic. A health scare, fender bender or even a friend’s passing might create a chance to have the conversation they’ve been avoiding.

The truth is, you may not be able to prevent every bad outcome. But if you’ve shown up with love and made it clear you’re there to help, sometimes that’s all you can do.

And when they’re ready to talk, you’ll be ready, too. ■

Your skin is the body’s largest organ, working around the clock like your heart, lungs and kidneys.

The outer layer of the skin— the epidermis—acts as a barrier, shielding the body from harmful elements like moisture, UV rays, germs and toxins. As long as this barrier is strong and healthy, your skin looks and feels good and can keep you safe.

Unfortunately, this protective layer suffers a lot of wear and tear as we age. Without proper care, it starts to break down.

Think of your skin like a section of brickwork on a house. When it’s new, it’s solid and the mortar holds them firmly in place. Over time, that mortar can start to chip and

wear away. Before long, you have loose and broken bricks.

The same happens with the skin.

It’s built a little like a brick wall, with the skin cells making up the bricks and layers of fat cells acting as mortar. When we’re young, this wall is strong and vital, allowing in only beneficial nutrients (like skin lotion) while keeping the bad guys out.

But years of sun exposure, dry air, harsh cosmetics, stress and aging take a toll. Cracks open up in the mortar and the structure weakens, leading to sagging and bagging.

We see these effects in those fine lines and wrinkles that show up—which is bad enough! But there are far more sinister effects that may occur.

A DAMAGED SKIN BARRIER CAN’T PROTECT YOU We all know that bacteria and viruses can enter the body through the nose, eyes and mouth, causing infections like the common cold and flu. Most of the time, germs don’t enter through the skin.

But if the skin’s outer barrier is damaged, the skin loses its ability to protect you.

That’s exactly what happened to my stepdad. He developed cellulitis—a painful skin infection caused by bacteria that typically affects the lower leg.

This wasn’t a simple little infection— far from it. His lower leg swelled up to more than twice its normal size and was beet red. It was also very painful. As someone who’s been through double hip and double knee replacement surgeries, he said this was much worse.

He was in the hospital for over a week and it was scary. Despite antibiotics, his leg was only getting worse. It wasn’t until he got a good infectious disease specialist that he started to improve.

Cellulitis is typically caused by streptococcus or staphylococcus bacteria. The weird thing is that these bacteria normally live on the skin without causing any harm. But if the skin is broken or the outer layer is damaged, the bacteria can enter the skin and wreak havoc.

If you have leg swelling (edema)— a common issue among older adults—that also increases your risk of skin infections like cellulitis. A 2021 study found that one-third of patients with chronic edema were likely to develop cellulitis. The worse the swelling, the higher the risk.

The good news is that you can do a lot to shore up your skin barrier and help prevent these types of problems. All you have to do is give your skin the daily care it needs.

To keep your skin strong and hydrated, apply moisturizer every day.

Just as daily brushing and flossing keep your teeth healthy, a simple skincare routine can protect your skin from damage, dryness and infections. Follow these steps: • Choose a gentle cleanser. Many bar soaps strip the skin of its natural oils, making it more vulnerable to damage. Those over 40 years old should always use gentler cream cleansers that include some type of moisturizer.

• Moisturize every day. One of the first signs of skin barrier damage is dry skin. That’s because a damaged skin barrier can no longer hold onto moisture like it should.

To keep your skin strong and hydrated, apply moisturizer every day after your shower or before bed. Moisturize all over—your face, arms, legs, hands and feet.

• Use quality products. Many drugstore moisturizers contain chemicals that don’t help your skin. If your moisturizer leaves your skin feeling dry and tight an hour later, it’s not a good product. Look for those that include natural oils (like jojoba and olive), glycerin, shea and cocoa butter, vitamins, ceramides (fats) and hyaluronic acid (a natural moisturizer). ■

gg yolks have gotten a bad rap in recent years. Some people avoid them for fear of cholesterol, while others—especially those following keto or carnivore diets—can’t get enough.

Let’s touch on something important for those taking cholesterol-lowering medications. Statins, such as atorvastatin, are widely prescribed to manage cholesterol levels, but they can also reduce levels of certain nutrients your body needs—many of which are found in egg yolks. These medications may deplete CoQ10, which supports heart health and energy production, as well as vitamin K2, which helps your body absorb calcium properly. Over time, these deficiencies may contribute to symptoms like fatigue, depression, muscle cramps, thyroid issues or even hair loss. How to bathe a cat and why not to

s cats age, they may have more trouble grooming themselves—especially in hardto-reach spots. While most felines are expert self-cleaners, a decline in grooming can also signal dental pain or other health issues, so it’s wise to start by taking your cat to the vet.

Before considering a full bath— which can be stressful for both of you—try these gentler grooming options:

Start with brushing.

Grooming is a great way to bond with your cat. Begin by gently stroking him with the back of a plastic or metal comb. If he leans in or starts purring, flip the comb over and lightly comb his fur.

Senior cats often have thinner skin and bonier spines, so they’re more likely to appreciate soft, gentle brushes that feel more like a massage.

After surgery, the man looked better than ever, and people couldn’t stop complimenting him— especially his mother.

12 reasons to love being a senior

don’t have to tell you what is hard about aging. You already know that. But here are a dozen benefits that accompany aging—really!

1

Puzzles. Starting my day with Wordle, Connections, the Mini Crossword, Strands—or the BEACON’s crossword and sudoku (on page 47)—are fun brainpower challenges I wouldn’t have taken time for earlier in life, even if cell phones had been available.

Savoring coffee. In the throes of heavy-duty working and parenting, there were days I’d just bolt coffee down for the caffeine. Now I enjoy the warmth, leisurely sips and better coffee (thanks, Keurig).

Family. My siblings and I have rarely lived in the same state as adults—and when I was busy raising children, they were too.

Long stretches went by between

phone calls and visits. Now they’re just a spontaneous phone call or text away, and hearing from them makes my day!

Travel is easier. Plane fares are more affordable when you’re not taking the whole crew. I’m not restricted to trips during school breaks or exclusively kid-friendly destinations. One friend told me she uses the BEACON’s travel articles to plan her trips. I wonder if she’ll go to the British Virgin Islands (see pages 26-27).

Peace. I wish I could get back all the time I wasted worrying about things that didn’t matter.

These days, I focus on what does: relationships matter. Doing the right thing matters.

Accumulated knowledge. The more you know, the easier it is to tackle life. Stockpiling useful information simplifies life, from car

Less parenting. The hard work of parenting is done: extra laundry and cooking, chauffeuring, finding shoes and bus passes, wrangling kids into car seats, vaccinations and “homework for grownups,” as a friend calls it (when kids need homework help). A bonus: befriending your adult kids.

More grandparenting. These whimsical little people make you laugh with their delightfully unfiltered thoughts and surprising questions—and they give the best hugs ever!

More sleep. I often operated at a sleep deficit during life’s busiest years. The importance of sleep for overall health is touted more than ever. Now I prioritize it.

What taxes might apply after you die?

any people worry about the potential tax implications their families may face after their passing. Fortunately, for most, the tax burden is not as heavy as anticipated. However, understanding the different types of taxes that may apply can help you plan and ensure your loved ones are financially prepared.

Here’s an overview of the key tax considerations after death:

FEDERAL ESTATE TAX The federal estate tax applies to the value of an individual’s estate at the time of death. But due to a high exemption amount, most estates are not affected. As of 2024, estates valued at less than $13.61 million are exempt. If your estate falls below this threshold, no federal estate tax will be due.

For those with larger estates, there are strategies to minimize tax exposure. For instance, assets left to a spouse or charities may be exempt. However, this exemption will be reduced to approximately $7 million on January 1, 2026, so plan ahead!

STATE ESTATE & INHERITANCE TAXES While Colorado does not impose an estate or inheritance tax, some other states do.

If you own property or have residency in a state with these taxes, it’s worth consulting with a tax professional to determine whether taxes may apply.

CAPITAL GAINS TAX RELIEF One benefit of the U.S. tax system is the “step-up” in basis that applies to certain assets upon death. For example, if you own stocks or real estate, their tax basis is adjusted to the fair market value at the date of your death.

This adjustment reduces (or eliminates) the capital gains tax liability when the asset is sold by your heirs. However, this process can be more complex for assets held in business entities like partnerships, LLCs or corporations. Understanding these nuances is key to ensuring your heirs benefit.

INCOME TAX ON RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS If you hold retirement accounts such as a traditional IRA or 401(k), it’s important to understand that these accounts carry income tax obligations. You pay income tax as you withdraw funds during your lifetime, and the same applies to your heirs after your death.

For example, if your IRA is passed to a beneficiary, they will be required to take distributions and pay the corresponding income taxes. Planning for these taxes can help your heirs better manage their tax burden.

PLAN AHEAD For Colorado residents, the opportunity to ensure your family’s financial well-being starts with education and preparation.

While the idea of taxes after death can be intimidating, many estates fall below the federal exemption threshold, and Colorado residents do not face additional state estate taxes. However, each family’s situation is unique and tax laws are constantly changing.

Plant friend or foe?

Your garden is full of characters. Some are helpful, some are a nuisance—and a few are both. Either way, it helps to know what you’re dealing with.

Let’s take a closer look at six of the most common plants you’re likely to spot this season—along with tips for telling them apart, getting rid of them or putting them to good use.

DANDELION ✔ FRIEND This familiar perennial boasts dark green leaves jagged like a lion’s teeth—hence the name. Its leaves grow in a circle around a hollow stem topped with bright yellow blooms. Below ground, a long taproot extends deep, drawing minerals from the subsoil and enriching both the plant and the soil.

EDIBLE VALUE: Dandelion leaves can be eaten fresh or dried, but they taste best when they’re harvested before flowering.

They’re rich in chlorophyll, calcium, magnesium, vitamins A and C, and natural bitters that support digestion and gut health. The yellow petals offer a mild honey-like flavor and are packed with vitamin B, amino acids and trace minerals. The root, high in minerals, gets sweeter as the plant prepares for dormancy. Grate it fresh into soups or sandwiches—it’s tasty and versatile year-round.

How to handle 6 common garden invaders (and allies)

BINDWEED FOE One of the most common perennial weeds, bindweed is a dark green vine with white trumpet-shaped flowers. It climbs fences and chokes out vegetable plants. This nuisance spreads both by seed and underground roots.

CONTROL TIP: Managing bindweed is a season-long

task. Avoid weed whacking—each cut encourages the plant to split and grow back twice as strong.

Instead, look for native mites that feed on bindweed.

If you spot bindweed with crinkled leaves, snip off a few and transplant them to your yard to introduce these beneficial bugs.Flame weeding is also effective. A low flame damages the plant’s growth points, forcing it to sprout from deep in the root, which can take up to three weeks.

Compare that to a one-week regrowth if simply cut at the surface.

KOCHIA FOE This fast-growing annual weed sports 1- to 2-inch lance-shaped leaves and can shoot up to 6 feet tall. A single plant can produce up to 100,000 seeds—so don’t wait to take action.

CONTROL TIP: Hit it early, while it’s small.

Flame weeding works great over large areas, but for spot treatment use 30% vinegar (acetic acid). Table vinegar (5%) won’t cut it—go

for the stronger stuff to burn the plant’s cells and stop photosynthesis in its tracks.

If kochia gets kneehigh, mow or weed whack it first, then imcredit: Eric Westra, Colorado State University mediately follow with flame or high-strength vinegar to finish the job.

The good news? It won’t grow back. As an annual, once it’s gone, it’s gone.

GOAT HEADS

LAMB’S QUARTER

FOE

✔ FRIEND This hardy annual can tolerate poor soil and often grows in clumps. Its silvery-green, arrow-shaped leaves appear credit: extension.okstate.edu opposite each other along a sturdy stem. The white dust on its leaves is mineral salt drawn from the soil—so the more powdery it looks, the more mineral-rich the spot. As the plant matures, it forms flower clusters at the top of each stalk.

EDIBLE VALUE: When young, lamb’s quarter leaves taste like spinach and can be enjoyed fresh in salads, tucked into sandwiches, blended into pesto, juiced or ribboned into bread dough. Just one cup of greens delivers 90% of your daily vitamin C and is packed with B vitamins.

A cousin to quinoa, lamb’s quarter seeds are a complete protein and highly nutritious. You can sprout them in 1-2 days or cook them like a grain.

Also known as puncture vine (tribulus terrestris), this low-growing, sprawling weed has fern-like leaves, small yellow flowers and notorious spiked seed heads that resemble a goat’s head. It’s the scourge of bare feet, dog paws and bike tires alike.

CONTROL TIP: While the leaves and shoots are edible, the plant’s painful seed pods make it more enemy than asset. The green fruit, when dried and powdered, was once used as a natural testosterone booster, but that’s no reason to keep it around. Weed whacking prevents flowering temporarily but encourages stronger regrowth. Flame or 30% vinegar treatments when the plants are young will eliminate them and they won’t grow back. If you keep them from flowering, they’ll be gone from your yard within a couple of seasons. ■

QUACKGRASS

MAY PLANTING DATES:

According to the Biodynamic Calendar, ideal planting days for May are May 1–13 and May 27–31.

FOE This pale green, clumping grass is a persistent invader in lawns and gardens. It spreads rapidly via underground rhizomes and can be identified by the claw-like appendage at the base of each leaf, which clasps around the stem.

CONTROL TIP: Mowing or weed whacking won’t stop it.

Instead, dig around the edges in spring and fall to slow its spread.

During the growing season, apply baking soda to individual plants—it blocks water uptake and kills the grass back. For best results, wet the leaves first, then sprinkle about 1 teaspoon per plant.

You can also make a spray: mix 10 tablespoons of baking soda per gallon of water and apply in full sun. But be careful—this method is non-selective and can harm nearby plants.

On March 1 (a non-ideal planting day) I sowed a batch of spinach seeds. One week later, on March 8, I planted a second batch on an ideal day. The results? The second batch germinated two days faster and quickly caught up. In the end, both were harvested on the same day. Try your own experiment this month and see how planting by the moon affects your garden!

Mom’s Driftwood Garden Weathered, beautiful, enduring— just like her

M

y mother’s sculptures—they are everywhere. Large formations, odd little bits and pieces of driftwood gathered from the mountains near her home in

Cripple Creek. Though she did not sculpt the wood with her own hands, she chose each one and carefully placed them in the gallery of her yard.

The beauty of her artful arrangement struck me as I strolled through this driftwood garden.

Though each weathered piece is placed with purpose, it all appears casually strewn about the yard, as if by chance.

One piece with an open loop resembling a basket cradles a bouquet of Colorado wildflowBetty Jo Gallegos, 87, was one of 15 children, had five children of her own and is a grandmother up to the great-great-great level.

ers. Another, which she calls “The Swan,” has a long, graceful neck, bark-formed wings and a twig beak.

My favorite is “The Lounger”—a trunk with long, root-like legs, perfectly shaped for sitting.

In this hardwood garden, I see my mother’s spirit. All her life, she has created something from nothing. She accepted hardship and

somehow turned it into survival.

That spirit kept her working in the cotton and tobacco fields as a young girl in a very large family. It helped her survive hunger, abuse, divorce, stillbirths and the unbearable loss of her husband to a drunk driver. She also buried a daughter, my sister Sharon.

wood, I see the flexing and bending of my mother’s life through storms past and present. These driftwood pieces mirror her sad acceptance that her daughters don’t get along, despite her many attempts to mend those bonds.

My mother is the only person I know who can take so little and make it into so much.

She believes in everything—aspen trees will grow anywhere you plant them. Trees will sprout from avocado pits. Cherry seeds, plum pits—under her care, anything can take root. Think it’s impossible to catch a fish with banana bait? She’s done it. She believes Elvis might still be alive—and Bigfoot, too.

Her kindness flows so freely, it humbles me. She won’t turn anyone away, no matter the crime or offense.

She can’t stand to see anything wasted. She saves bags and boxes, plastic containers, forgotten roller skates and rusty keys. She treasures old pieces of Sarah Coventry jewelry, Melmac dishes, my dad’s Army uniform, cracked coffee cups— yesteryear’s souvenirs.

Thank heavens for this trait.

Recently, she opened a trunk full of my baby sister’s life-tender pieces:

a tiny sweater, a Shari Lewis makeup case, a stuffed horse with red stripes, her toothbrush, her last hospital toys, a lock of blonde hair shaved for surgery. Her pink hornrimmed glasses. Only a mother could bear to keep these.

Her kindness flows so freely, it humbles me. She won’t turn anyone away. No matter the crime or offense, she truly believes everyone has some redeeming quality. In her eyes, we are all “rehabable.”

“They might steal my car,” she once said, “but they just might bring it back when they’re done with it.”

I haven’t always been gracious to my mother. I have rebelled against her way of doing things. But now, I see the qualities I once viewed as weaknesses were really her greatest strengths. The older I get, the more I see her in me. We stack dishes the same, arrange cabinets the same.

Down deep, I know we are more alike than I care to admit. I am, in so many ways, her.

When my father died at age 40, I feared my mother would, too. But she didn’t. At 38, with two kids still at home, she found a well of courage and strength she didn’t know she had. Slowly, she found her footing again. And still, she gives— without bitterness, without limits.

She continues to set the bar higher for those that follow. She’s taught me that the impossible is possible.

That beauty can be sculpted from hardship.

At 87, Betty Jo has traveled many trails. I’ve no doubt she will travel a few more before it’s time to leave.

Top reasons to visit the British Virgin Islands

wo decades ago, I visited the British Virgin Islands (BVI), where I explored pristine beaches, natural landmarks and historic sites, and marveled at the spectacular scenery. On a recent return trip, I relived those experiences and discovered even more reasons why the islands are a welcoming destination for anyone seeking sun, surf and a taste of Caribbean culture.

What’s missing in the BVI? Highrise hotels, gambling, chain restaurants and the over-commercialized feel of many other Caribbean destinations. What you’ll find instead are steep, winding mountain roads with stunning views. With many more potholes than pavement, I recommend using taxis or tour buses rather than renting a car.

In Road Town, the J.R. O’Neal Botanic Gardens showcase tropical plants representing the different habitats of the BVI. One hidden gem worth seeking out is Jenesis Studio. Inside, you’ll find vivid paintings of BVI life.

Behind the building is a tropical herb garden with signs identifying traditional medicinal uses.

I also ventured to three other inhabited islands among the 60 that make up the BVI. Anegada, formed from coral and limestone, contrasts with its volcanic neighbors and boasts dazzling white sand beaches, colorful reefs and shipwrecks ideal for snorkeling and diving.

Virgin Gorda is home to “the

Baths,” a collection of granite boulders forming scenic grottoes along the beach, while also preserving remnants of African, Spanish and Indigenous settlements.

Jost Van Dyke, said to be named for a Dutch privateer, makes up in attractions what it lacks in size (about 3.5 square miles). The island is dotted with ruins of early sugar mills and historic footpaths. It’s also home to the world-famous Soggy Dollar Bar, said to be the birthplace of the Painkiller cocktail. Before the road was built, patrons swam ashore and paid their tab with soggy bills pulled from their pockets.

In addition to the usual Caribbean pastimes—sunning and swimming, snorkeling and diving— the BVI is a paradise for boaters.

Consistent trade winds, calm turquoise waters and a cluster of easily navigable islands have earned it a reputation as the sailing capital of the Caribbean. Many visitors rent a sailboat or catamaran to explore hidden coves, secluded beaches

Even if you’re not a sailor, I highly recommend spending time on land. Each island has its own scenic beauty, fun activities and intriguing chapters of history to relate.

I stayed at the Wyndham Tortola BVI Lambert Beach Resort, which fronts a beautiful stretch of sand and features an inviting pool lined with cabanas, lush gardens and gourmet dining.

A vocation for every believer

ark 16:7-8: “But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’ Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.”

Jesus had spent years training the Twelve to be his messengers.

But on that first Easter morning, it wasn’t the Twelve who stood at the empty tomb. It was a group of faithful women.

Every Sunday, I preach to a congregation of retirees, students, dishwashers, homemakers, medical aides, IT professionals and security guards. They aren’t theologians or trained missionaries. But like those first women at the tomb, they’ve been following Jesus for years.

They’ve supported the ministry of the gospel and grown in faith.

And like them—and like you— they know the truth: One spring morning, a crucified man walked out of his tomb alive. He died to

The women who followed Jesus spent their time learning from him and providing material and financial support. They weren’t theologians or trained preachers—but they were chosen to carry the most important news the world has ever heard.

“Go and tell,” the angel commanded. That became their calling, their vocation.

God didn’t ask them to pastor congregations or evangelize a pagan tribe in some far off land.

He simply asked them to share the news with people they knew: Jesus is alive.

The women at the tomb—Mary Magdalene, Salome, Mary the mother of James—remind us of the faithful, courageous women in our lives. When Mark said, “They said nothing to anyone,” it’s not a sign of disobedience. Rather, it was an indication that they took their mission seriously, and went straight to the disciples without

make peace between God and humanity, to make amends for all the great crimes and small slips committed by every person who ever lived. He rose to promise eternal life to those who trust in him. He is your Savior, your brother, your Lord, and your God. Does it have to be stated that this is not information to keep to ourselves? Does someone need to vote on it before we understand we’ve been called to share that message?

I believe that it is self-evident for those who may or may not have been looking for Jesus, but he found them when he captured their hearts with his gracious words of love.

The women of local Giving Clubs are philanthropists in action

ince 2017, the Giving Club of Montrose has empowered women of all ages and backgrounds to give back to their community in an educational and fun way. Today, the club boasts more than 100 members—mostly women age 55 and older—and has donated over $410,000 to local nonprofits.

The idea began with longtime friends and community advocates Phoebe Benziger and Sue Hansen.

In 2016, Benziger approached Hansen about a giving group she had heard about in Grand Junction. The two attended a couple of meetings, connected with members and left inspired.

“The Giving Club of Grand Junction was incredibly helpful and generous,” said Hansen. “They shared all their ideas and forms, and they coached us on what to say and how to help members be better presenters.”

They brought that generosity back to Montrose.

“I remember not sleeping the whole night before [our first meeting]. I was terrified no one would show up,” said Benziger. “I can’t even begin to tell you what it felt like when over 100 women walked in the door. It was exhilarating!”

Their goal was to create a space for women who hadn’t been involved in giving back or who didn’t know where to start.

“The Giving Club exposes

members to all different kinds of non-profits,” said Hansen.

WOMEN OF PURPOSE The club meets quarterly—February, May, August and November— on the first Thursday of the month from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Bridges Golf & Country Club, 2500 Bridges Drive.

The first half hour is for socializing and collecting donations.

Members attending the meeting may submit their charity of choice along with a $100 donation. There is also a $15 fee, which covers room rental, a drink and snacks.

Three charities are randomly selected from the pool, and the nominating members briefly explain why their chosen nonprofit should receive the donation. After the presentations, attendees vote and the winner takes all. Members who can’t attend will receive an email with the chance to contribute. Most winning nonprofits receive between $8,000 and $12,000.

“We love hearing about all the charitable organizations and the things they are doing to help our community,” said Benziger. “We are passionate about making sure our dollars stay local to help with local needs.”

Even the nonprofits that don’t win benefit from the exposure.

s the world turns its eyes to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby, few remember the man who stood quietly behind one of the greatest champions the sport has ever known.

Edward “Shorty” Sweat was born in 1939 in Holly Hill, South Carolina, one of nine children of a sharecropper. He grew up in a cinder-block house without running water, heated only by a small woodstove. With just a sixth-grade education, his future seemed destined for the cotton and tobacco fields.

Fortunately for him, the town was also home to the Thoroughbred horse farm of Lucien Laurin, who would later become a U.S. Racing Hall of Fame trainer. One day in 1957, Laurin noticed the 18-year-old Black man studying the horses through the fence surrounding the property and offered him a job. Sweat accepted, becoming a full-time groom in exchange for a small salary and a promise of 1% of

He quickly became Laurin’s most trusted groom. He formed a particularly close bond with a powerful chestnut colt named Secretariat— known to the stable as “Big Red.” “I guess a groom gets closer to a horse than anyone,” Sweat once told a reporter. “The owner, the trainer—they maybe see him once a day. But I lived with Secretariat.”

Sweat often slept on a cot outside the stall to monitor the horse’s moods and needs.

In 1973, Secretariat became the first Triple Crown winner since 1948. His 31-length Belmont victory remains one of the greatest in racing history. He also holds the record for the fastest Kentucky Derby-winning time. While Secretariat graced the covers of Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated, Sweat was featured in Ebony and Jet—a rare moment of national attention for a man in his role.

After retirement, Secretariat stood at stud for 16 years in a deal worth $6 million (about $45 million today), siring 663 foals, including 59 winners that collectively earned $29 million. No stallion on the planet was worth more.

In 1999, he became the first Thoroughbred featured on a U.S. postage stamp.

Yet the man who was the horse’s closest companion received little recognition—and even less reward.

Despite being promised 1% of Secretariat’s winnings, Sweat never received it. He spent his life traveling the racetrack circuit. Still, he never complained—not about the money, the hours or the time spent away from his wife and children.

When Sweat died in 1998 at age 58, a few track workers came to pay their respects—mainly exercise riders and training-center staff— but no owners or trainers came.

He left his family two acres of land. The 1% of the promised race winnings—about $13,000—never materialized.

Eddie Sweat always took great pride in his association with perhaps the greatest racehorse of all time: “I guess you could say I was his main man.” ■

Monument Trail completion connects city to western landscapes

The City of Grand Junction and Colorado West Land Trust will celebrate the completion of the Monument Trail—the final link in a 10-mile route connecting neighborhoods, natural areas and the red rock base of the Colorado National Monument—on Tuesday, May 20 at 4:30 p.m. at the Lunch Loops Trailhead. This three-mile paved, multiuse trail forms the backbone of the Redlands Loop, weaving through desert, riparian and lake ecosystems in a single scenic ride. The Monument Trail is a milestone in outdoor access and conservation, providing a critical piece of outdoor infrastructure that supports the local economy, promotes healthier lifestyles and helps preserve the natural beauty of the region, while conserving 213 acres of public land and supporting a multi-modal transportation network. The May 20 celebration will include food

hydropower to Mesa County. Under a new three-year agreement, GVP will purchase up to 1.4 megawatts of electricity—enough to power about 420 homes—from RWP’s small hydropower plant on Power Road. The energy is generated by water diverted from the Gunnison River and returned to the Colorado River after passing through the plant’s turbines. The City of Grand Junction Commission on Arts and Culture are seeking artists for two upcoming public art projects—one for the new Community Recreation Center and another for the Monument Connector Trail. Artists are invited to submit original mural designs for the swimming pools at the new Community Recreation Center.

The final design will be printed and installed by a specialized vendor.

Proposals are due May 30, 2025, with final digital files due July 16.

Designs must include water elements and follow the color palette outlined in the call. A separate call invites artists to design an artistic shade shelter to be installed along the Monument Connector Trail.

Proposals are due May 20, 2025, and installation must be completed

by August 29.

From May 1–15, Roice-Hurst Humane Society is participating in the Bissell Pet Foundation’s Empty the Shelters event, offering $50 adoptions for all pets. Roice-Hurst is one of hundreds of shelters nationwide joining the reduced-fee adoption campaign to help more animals find loving homes. he financial plight of the average American is about the same—we’d have more if we had saved more.

In 2022, the median retirement savings for American households was $87,000. As of 2024, a staggering 25% of non-retired Americans have no retirement savings at all, according to Guardian Life Insurance.

We seldom see the big picture when we are in our early 20s. We’re busy earning a degree, getting married, buying a home, starting a family—just starting life. Rarely do we have someone to sit us down and say, “Here’s where you could be financially if you start saving now.”

Few high school seniors have had anyone write numbers on a chalkboard to show them what early investing can do.

If someone had told me at 18 to put $1,000 into the right investment fund, I could be sitting on $117,000 today (at age 68)—based on an annual average return of 10%. That same amount invested at 19 could grow to $106,000, at 20 to $97,000 and at 21 to $88,000.

By age 22, your total could be over $408,000 from just four modest

annual investments.

That’s more than most Americans have for retirement.

Let’s say you keep going and invest $100 a month from age 18 to 68. You’d have roughly $1.27 million. Increase it to $300 a month, and you could build more than $3.17 million.

These are projections, of course.

Interest rates vary, but historically, the stock market has averaged about 10% annually over the past 50 years.

Too many wait until their 30s or 40s to start saving. But starting early—even with small amounts— can make a huge difference.

Yes, there’s more to life than money. You can’t take it with you.

But by teaching our children and grandchildren the value of early investing, we can make their lives a little easier.

According to CNBC, former president Joe Biden’s net worth is about $9 million. But had he invested just $1,000 a month over his 50year political career, he’d have more than $13.9 million today. Biden’s doing fine—but it’s a reminder that no matter who you are, you can always do a little better ■
