ur country’s first settlers felt God had a plan for this nation. John Winthrop, the first governor of Massachusetts, said, “America is a city set on a hill, which would be a light to the whole world.” Instead of aspiring to earthly greatness, men like Winthrop, William Bradford and George Washington—who were among our country’s first leaders—wanted to serve God’s people. God was able to use these men to mightily show the way of building this nation and being a light to the world.
AMERICA IS A CITY SET ON A HILL, WHICH WOULD BE A LIGHT TO THE WHOLE WORLD. When our country’s forefathers founded America, they felt their belief in God would guide their decisions for all generations of Americans. They believed their new nation would be the greatest nation in the world. They knew it wouldn’t be easy to defend the rights guaranteed in our Constitution, but they believed that all Americans would have equal rights and freedoms. This is called the American Dream. This is God’s plan for America.
How many incredible blessings have been poured out on this nation? How much grace that covers this country is a direct result of the obedience and willingness of our forefathers to die to self and to live for others? Only God knows. As I traveled across America this past year, I was pleased to see so many American flags flying in yards, on fences and bridges, and in businesses. I know things don’t look so good right now in our country, but rest assured that God still has His plan, which isn’t completed yet. Just as our forefathers felt that God had a plan, so do many Americans today. ■
