PPEC also partners with the local Lions Club to donate eyeglasses to the community.

“Even if you’re not a current patient, if you have old eyeglasses lying around your house, bag them up and swing by. We’d be happy to donate them,” Lee said.

7 questions to ask a cat sitter or boarding facility

Going on vacation? Take the time to find a good sitter or boarding facility for your cat while you’re away.

Life can get scary for cats when their family suddenly disappears. Cats are creatures of habit, so keeping their environment as familiar as possible is the best way to keep them happy while you’re away.

CATS-ONLY BOARDING

A cat-only facility is usually quieter and won’t have as many unfamiliar smells as a place that boards both dogs and cats. If you must board at a place with both, choose one where cat boarding and dog boarding are well separated.

Some cat boarding facilities offer many conveniences, such as transportation and live streaming webcams. They’re also committed to lowering your cat’s stress by making sure they stay on their same diet or medications. Plus, a licensed boarding facility has a working relationship with a veterinarian in case anything should happen.

The State of Colorado regulates pet boarding facilities, and for good reason. Avoid people who do unlicensed “boarding” in their homes. Anything could happen to your cats in a private home. It can be the breeding ground for disease. Plus, placing your cats in an unfamiliar home with strangers and forcing them to live with animals they don’t know can be terrifying.

Many cats do better if left in their own homes because at least their environment doesn’t change when their people do. However, pet sitting is unregulated, so it’s important to make sure the person taking care of your cats is cat-friendly and has cat skills.

Get references before letting someone into your home, especially if you want overnight care. A quality pet-sitting business will have insurance and be bonded if they have employees.

Invite any potential cat sitter over to meet the cats before you leave and ask them these questions, (many of these apply to boarding facilities as well): 1) How long have you been caring for cats? 2) What would you do if my cats were hiding when you came to care for them? 3) What experience do you have giving medications or special diets? 4) How will you know if it’s time to take my cat to the vet? 5) What is your favorite toy for playing with cats? 6) How much time do you spend playing with them during each visit? 7) Do you have certification in feline first aid?
