love that as a citizen of Colorado, I have the power to bypass my state legislature and take my political concerns straight to the electorate.

But “with great power comes great responsibility,” and I hate that other, less responsible people have the same right to exercise that power as I do.

And this election year is another case in point. Ballot initiative circulators will be out in force this summer, as 130 initiatives have been submitted to the Colorado Secretary of State’s office. I’d like to thank Caitlin Switzer, president of the MontroseDelta League of Women Voters, who recently brought this issue to my attention and has provided the tips below to help you decide whether or not to sign a petition.

• Does it belong in the state constitution? Future changes may be difficult and costly.

• Is it complex? Complex issues are better thoroughly examined and debated in a legislative arena. Some initiatives are vaguely written or contain conflicts that may require court resolution.

• Whose idea is it? You can find out proponents and opponents from the secretary of state’s office. Paid signature gatherers are required to wear a badge with the name and phone number of their employer.

• How will it be funded?

My two cents worth First, it bothers me that many of these ballot issues are not our issues.

Because of the freedom we have in Colorado to petition issues on to the ballot, many outside forces like to use our state to push their own national agendas.

Second, God bless the League of Women Voters. As a non-partisan political organization that encourages informed and active citizen participation in government, they are true defenders of liberty.

She met her future husband, Leslie, they each had two or more jobs, while raising two sons, Leslie Jr., at an Austrian refugee camp she now age 56, and Tibor, now 52, who shared with 5,000 others including her brother’s family. Leslie also both live in Grand Junction.

“Leslie taught my boys to love America,” Bikki said. “He said, ‘You are so privileged to have been born here.’ He was raised in an orphanage and faced so many hardships. He told them America is home.”

In 1977, Gov. Richard Lamm honored the Bikkis by presenting them with a National Americanism medal for outstanding citizenship from the Daughters of the American Revolution in Denver.

Leslie died eight years ago.

“He was an amazing man,” Bikki said. “He would have loved to be sitting here today talking about America and his freedom.”

Bikki’s brother’s family settled in Delta, and in 1965, she and Leslie were able to move her parents from Hungary to Palisade. They were 65 and 68 at the time and lived to be 85 and 97 as Americans.

“They gave America a new name,” Bikki said.

“Paradise.”

The Bikkis named their orchard Bikki’s Ranch of Liberty out of respect for their newfound freedom.

Barbara is in the process of writing her life story.

“Freedom comes from sacrifice,” Bikki said. “To share my story is to let people see a world they have never been able to see. To see the privileges God has given them, not only political freedom but spiritual freedom. Time is uncertain and you have choices to make. Live your life to the fullest and love more than you have ever loved before, including yourself, your family and your country. You never know how long you will have them.”

Bikki has lost track of the thousands of times she has shared her story, but the message remains the same. FREEDOM. Fight for it and never take it for granted. ■

T

here are many music organizations on the Western Slope to participate in or support. Most groups on the Western Slope are professional yet fun, and are made up of extremely talented and dedicated musicians.

What may surprise you is how many of these musicians are so passionate about music that they are involved in multiple groups.

If you took away their music, you would find vacant hearts and souls.

Ever since high school in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, Melba has played in a symphony wherever she lived.

“I don’t know if I would have moved here if there wasn’t a symphony,” she said. “Music helps give my life balance and keep my selfrespect. I’ve watched the symphony grow to be a great symphony.

It’s part of my life. I can’t imagine not being a part of it.”

Paul’s mother taught him and his brother piano as soon as they could sit on the bench.

“There wasn’t enough room on the bench for two, so I took up the violin in third grade,” Paul said with a smile.

He played in the Mesa College Orchestra while still attending Fruita High School.

“If you have a musical background, pick it up again,” Melba advised. “Do what you can with it.

Get involved. Play with a group.

It’s something you can do the rest of your life. Your bodies break down but you can still play or listen to music. Use that creative part of your brain to give you mental balance.”

Grand Junction Symphony Melba and Paul Wubben, 82 and 83, are both founding members of the Grand Junction Symphony, now entering its 36th season. In 1978, a group of ambitious local musicians made their dream come true when they formed the symphony.

Their energy, passion and vision allowed them to hire the current music director, Maestro Kirk Gustafson, in 1987.

“The senior members of the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra have been great partners in our music making,” Gustafson said. “Their dedication and passion comes from the heart and inspires other members of the orchestra and our audiences.”

The Wubbens are both violinists and met in the symphony. They have been married 30 years, and have 11 children, 25 grandchildren, and soon to be 29 greatgrandchildren combined.

“There’s always been music in my life,” Melba said. “I started playing the violin at 5 years old.

Sara Hermunstadt, 59, was an original member of the Schumann Singers when they began in 1993. She and other voice students of Merritt Schumann urged him to challenge their musicianship in public. From this core of musicians the choir has grown in number and musical capability.

Grand Junction Centennial Band The Grand Junction Centennial Band was first formed to celebrate Grand Junction’s centennial anniversary. It continued and is now in its 33rd year. The band is comprised of over 60 western Colorado men and women dedicated to performing concerts in the Great American Band tradition.

Gary Ambrosier, 69, has been the director for 10 years.

“It’s a pleasure to direct people who love music and who are dedicated to being there every week,” Ambrosier said. “You know, I just educate them and then at concerts, I give them smiles and am just their cheerleader.”

Diane Hutmacher, 64, has played the flute with the Centennial Band since the beginning. A babysitter introduced her to the flute when she was in third grade.

“I have a fond desire to express myself with my instrument in ways that words can’t,” Hutmacher said.

“I can express so much emotion and passion through music.”

Hutmacher also sees the Centennial Band as a way to share music with the community, and the opportunity to have fun and enjoy the camaraderie of the people in the band.

“We’re all there for the same reason,” Hutmacher said. “I’m so passionate about the band. It would break my heart if it ever dissolved.

It is a musical outlet for so many people.”

Montrose Community Band The Montrose Community Band is an excellent outlet for seniors to carry their musical talent into retirement or dust off an instrument that has not been played in years.

The Montrose Community Band is made up of 50 members ranging in age from 12 to over 80 years old. The group plays a variety of music, including movie and television theme songs, polkas, big band melodies, patriotic marches, classical, contemporary and Christmas songs.

“The band is appealing to all ages due to the music selections and the fun of participating in a group that is accepting and encouraging, no matter your age or ability,” said clarinetist Tina Woodrum, who has been a part of the band since it started in 2002.

For Woodrum, their annual patriotic concert holds a special place in her heart.

Valley Symphony Orchestra

“It was basically my social group in high school and college,” Hutmacher said. “We all had the same passion for music.”

That passion continues with the network of people she plays with in

Local classical music lovers will find the Valley Symphony Orchestra (VSO) and Chorus to be quite a treat.

The group performs mostly classical music, but also adds in some pop and Broadway show tunes. One concert this year will even feature Latin American music.

David DeVinny, 74, is president of the board of directors, and became involved with the VSO because of his love for classical music.

“I wanted to help behind the scenes

since I don’t play in the orchestra, but I have been threatening to sing in the chorus,” DeVinny joked.

The VSO began in an Eckert living room 44 years ago and has grown to about 40 members in the orchestra and 70 voices in the chorus. Most VSO performances are at the Montrose Pavilion.

At least half the members are seniors and DeVinny believes they participate simply because of the music.

“I have not asked but I would venture that they have played this music all their lives and they continue to enjoy it,” he said.

Black Canyon Barbershop Chorus Started in 1976 by a small group of men who like to sing, the Black Canyon Barbershop Chorus is the only premier a capella male barbershop harmony chorus in the Montrose, Delta and Cedaredge area.

They sing a variety of songs, including western, pop, show, gospel and even some humorous songs.

Dennis Olmstead, 75, has been part of the Black Canyon Barbershop Chorus for eight years.

“We are just a bunch of guys who love each other’s company and who like singing,” he said. “We provide excellent music to the community while having fun doing it.”

With a present membership of 30 men, most of the members are seniors, some in their 90s. The group always welcomes new members and is great for men, whether they are experienced singers or beginners.

“You just have to be male and have an interest in singing,” Olmstead said.

The camaraderie of the group is a high point, but Olmstead also enjoys making audiences happy.

“We really have a great time singing to people,” he said. “I just love bringing music to people in the community.”

Anytime is the right time to enjoy participating in a musical group or supporting them by enjoying a concert. Consider dusting off the instrument in the back of your closet or warming up your vocal cords. It’s never too late to free your own inner passion for music and to share it with others. ■

ADD all ingredients but roast and BBQ sauce to your slow cooker, mix well.

Add the roast. Cook on low 6-8 hours or whenever you feel like getting back to it.

WHEN you’re ready to work with it, pull it out and allow it to rest for at least 20 minutes, then shred into desired pieces. Remove the liquid and replace the shredded pork in the still-warm slow cooker. Make sure it is on the lowest setting. Add BBQ sauce to your pork, mixing thoroughly. (I like sauce, so I usually add about 1-1/2 cups of sauce.)

SERVE it however you’d like. I like to serve it on buns, sometimes with dill pickle chips and sliced raw onion. Enjoy.

5 exercises for a solid strengthbuilding regimen

I

f you want good health, a long life and to feel your best well into old age, the most important thing you can do is strength training, said Dr. Brett Osborn, author of “Get Serious: A Neurosurgeon’s Guide to Optimal Health and Fitness.”

“Our ability to fight off disease resides in our muscles,” Osborn said.

“The greatest thing you can do for your body is to build muscle.”

Muscle is all protein, which is good for you. Fat, however, is an endocrine organ, meaning it releases hormones and other chemicals. When a person has excess fat, he or she also a disrupted flow of excess biochemicals, which can increase insulin resistance and boost risk factors for stroke and high blood pressure.

“Increased cytokines, immune system chemicals, for example, are associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease,” Osborn said.

“You’re only as old as your arteries.”

He said strength training has health benefits for everyone.

“Some fat is visceral fat,” he said.

“It’s stored around the organs and it’s even more dangerous than the fat you can see. People who look thin may actually be carrying around a lot of visceral fat.”

So what’s the workout Osborn recommends?

These five exercises are the pillars of a solid training regimen.

• The squat is a full-body exercise.

It’s the basic movement around which all training should be centered. Heavy squats generate a robust hormonal response as numerous muscular structures are traumatized during the movement (even your biceps). Standing erect with a heavy load on your back and then repeatedly squatting down will stress your body inordinately and in a good way, forcing it to grow more muscle.

• The overhead press primarily activates the shoulders, arm extenders and chest. Lower body musculature is also activated as it counters the

downward force of the dumbbell supported by the trainee. From the planted feet into the hands, force is transmitted through the skeletal system, stabilized by numerous muscular structures, most importantly the lower back.

• The deadlift centers on the hamstrings, buttocks, lumbar extensors and quadriceps, essentially the large muscles of your backside and the front of your thighs. As power is transferred from the lower body into the bar through the upper body conduit, upper back muscles are also stressed, contrasting with the squat, which is supported by the hands. It is considered by some to be the most complete training exercise.

• The bench press mostly targets the chest, shoulders and triceps. It’s the most popular among weightlifters, and it’s very simple. Trainees push the barbell off the lower chest until the arms are straight. This motion stresses not only the entire upper body, but also the lower body, which serves a stabilizing function. This provides a big hormonal response and plenty of bang for your buck.

• The pull-up/chin-up stress upper body musculature into the body. A pull-up is done when hands gripping over the bar; a chin-up is where hands are gripping under the bar.

Nine out of 10 people cannot do this exercise because most simply haven’t put in the effort. It’s also been called a “man’s exercise,” which Osborn said is nonsense. There are no gender-specific exercises. Women, too, should aspire to enjoy the health benefits entailed with this pillar.

“There are no secrets to a strong and healthier body,” Osborn said.

“Hard work is required for the body to remain vital and strong at any age.

Always practice proper form and safety. Otherwise, the result will be the opposite of your goal, an injury.”

ew findings in the physiological causes of depression are leading to treatments other than widely used antidepressants, such as Prozac and Zoloft, according to a report on a new study in the journal “Current Psychiatry.”

Depression is a problem facing many seniors. New treatments include new medications, electrical and magnetic stimulation of the brain, and long-term cognitive behavioral therapy for stress management.

For half a century, depression has been considered a deficiency of chemical messengers called neurotransmitters that carry signals between brain cells. Commonly used antidepressants are intended either to increase the release or block the degradation of the following three neurotransmitters: dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin.

But drugs that target neurotransmitters, such as Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil, succeed in reducing depression in fewer than half of patients.

This has driven researchers “to look beyond neurotransmitters to understand” what could effectively deal with depressive disorders, according to the study’s authors Murali Rao, MD, and Julie Alderson, DO. New theories about depression are aimed at differences in neuron density in regions of the brain, how stress affects the birth and death of brain cells, the alteration of pathways in the brain and on the role of inflammation brought on by the response of stress.

The article about the research said that chronic stress is thought to be the leading cause of depression. The authors of the study write that longterm stress harms cells in the brain and body. Stressful experiences are thought to be closely associated with the development of psychological changes and therefore, neuropsychiatric disorders. Where there is chronic stress in a person, nerve cells in the hippocampus begin to atrophy.

(The hippocampus is that part of the brain involved with emotions, learning and memory.)

The new depression theories “should not be viewed as separate entities because they are highly interconnected,” Rao and Alderson wrote.

“Integrating them provides for a more expansive understanding of the pathophysiology of depression and biomarkers that are involved.”

Such biomarkers are molecules in the body that can be indicators of depression. The authors identify more than a dozen potential complex biomarkers of depression, including monoamine regulators, proinflammatory cytokines and other inflammatory mediators, mediators of glutaminergic activity and GABAergic activity, and regulators of neurogenesis.

You probably have to be a medical scientist to appreciate this technical talk.

Depression treatments currently used or on the horizon include corticotropin-releasing hormone antagonists, dexamethasone, partial adrenalectomy, long-term cognitive behavioral therapy, ketamine and other NMDA antagonists, benzodiazepines, anesthetics, deep brain stimulation, transcranial magnetic stimulation, exogenous brain-derived neurotrophic factor, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, atypical antidepressants, reduction in inflammation, and anti-inflammatory drugs.

Seniors, you’ll have to get your doctor to explain what may lie ahead in treatments as suggested above. At least it is reassuring to know scientists are following new leads.

It can take months to recover from depression. Rao and Alderson wrote that current depression treatment programs that average six weeks “are not long enough for adequate recovery.”

New treatments maybe, but no immediate cure.

Forget the bee’s knees. Take good care of your own.

L

ike many older people, I have a problem with my knees.

One very good reason is that the knee is complicated. It has three different joints, medically speaking: the medial femoral and medial tibial condyles, the lateral femoral and tibial condyles, and the articulation between the patella and the femur.

The knee joint is capable of several motions, namely flexion, extension and medial and lateral rotation to a degree. It’s also the joint most susceptible to injury. Common knee injuries are tears to the anterior cruciate ligaments (ACL), and tears to the meniscus or cartilage.

The main parts of the knee joint are bones, ligaments, tendons, cartilages and a joint capsule, all of which are made of collagen. Collagen is a fibrous tissue present throughout our body. As we age, collagen breaks down. I suspect that’s my problem.

I suppose that as a male, I’m lucky.

That’s because women are the weakkneed sex. Years of stooping and kneeling, as most women have to do, takes its toll. Studies show that women are six times more likely than men to suffer ACL tears.

Although it’s usually called “runners knee,” a condition called patellofemoral syndrome can also affect those who are sedentary. The pain you feel comes from a misaligned kneecap scraping over the lower end of your thighbone.

Women have wider pelvises, which cause their thighs to slant inward more than men, which places extra force on a woman’s knees. According to WebMD, you can relieve that knee pain, whether it’s from arthritis or stooping or jogging when you were younger.

• Don’t rest too much. Too much

rest can weaken your muscles, which can worsen joint pain. Find an exercise program that is safe for your knees and stick with it. If you’re not sure which motions are safe or how much you can do, talk with your doctor or a physical therapist.

• Do some exercises such as walking and swimming. Tai chi can help relieve stiffness and help improve your balance. My wife bought me a Hurrycane, which you’ve probably seen advertised. The cane gives me a brace to lean on.

• Make sure your stairways have railings.

A fall could worsen your knee problem.

• Use an ice pack or heat on the knees.

(Both of mine are in pain.)

• Elevate your feet.

• Sleep with a pillow under your knees if you sleep on your back.

• Watch your weight. The more you weigh, the more stress you put on your knees.

• Ask your pharmacist about salves that might provide some relief. I’ve been using something called “Tiger Balm.” You rub it into your kneecaps morning and night.

• Consider acupuncture. Although some have found it worthless, it has relieved pain in others.

• Cushioned insoles in your shoes can reduce stress on your knees.

Some doctors recommend special insoles for knee osteoarthritis.

• And there are always painkillers.

Many people use nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), a type of pain reliever. These drugs, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, also reduce inflammation.

Inflammation is the body’s response to injury and is characterized by redness, warmth, swelling and pain. NSAIDs are used to treat a variety of conditions that cause pain and inflammation, including arthritis and tendinitis. ■

et me make it very clear: I’m a klutz.

I fall off my shoes, not only stilettos but sandals.

Chewing gum and walking present their own set of challenges.

I’ve always loved music and have a strong sense of rhythm, but trying to remember which steps go with which dances boggles my mind. But the desire to dance seems to be in my genes, so what’s a girl to do but try?

My first venture into dance was in a tap class in Miss Jane’s basement.

My 5-year-old feet struggled to keep up with Miss Jane’s chant: “Shuffle-hop-step, shuffle-hop-step” as the record player boomed out the beat. The only trouble was that my feet wanted to hop-shufflestep, over and over. And forget learning to curtsy: right foot behind or the other right foot behind?

I persevered long enough to dance in one recital, giddy with excitement over my white taffeta skirt with green shamrocks outlined in sequins and my black bodice that laced up the front. Then it was back to climbing trees, falling into creeks and generally being a tomboy.

In fifth grade I went to the YMCA square dance lessons and allemanded left when I should have swung to the right. I had no clue, until I was grown up, that the caller was actually telling me what to do. I thought I had to memorize the steps for each dance. After two lessons, I gave up in disgust.

In high school, I held up the wall at the dances, envious of the couples

who strolled, jitterbugged and slow danced to live music or records. I had to learn to dance! I practiced in my room, my friend April demonstrating the pony step, which she claimed all other dances were based on.

“Learn this one and you can do any of the others,” she said.

My pony gimped along as if it had stones in its hooves and pulled tendons.

As a hater of physical education classes, I was appalled to find that I had to take six to graduate from college. Mesa Junior College offered ballroom dance as an option, so I signed up. It was either that or volleyball, and I was tired of getting hit on the head because I was daydreaming.

We started simple: the box step, done to waltzes and two-steps. A foreign student, Ali, was in the class and was an excellent dancer. On the occasions that I got to be his partner, he swept me around the floor in a Viennese waltz or guided me into a rhumba and I could dance!

But as soon as I had to dance with a different partner, I was back to stumbling and staggering.

Then I took a modern dance class, which consisted of wearing tights and a leotard and leaping across the floor diagonally or free form twisting to awfully strange music. I may have gotten the PE credit but I didn’t become a better dancer.

Then came the era where all you had to do was fling your arms around and shake your heinie. I managed to do that pretty well, but I didn’t feel attractive or graceful.

Even though lots of people clapped, tapped and nodded in time, hardly anyone danced. I wanted to sway in the worst way but was afraid to venture out alone. Q. With the weather being so hot this month, is there anything I can plant now that won’t shrivel up and die from the heat?

Just because we tend to wilt in the hot July weather doesn’t mean our plants will. Almost any containerized plant will do just fine when planted in the heat of the summer, provided you have amended your soil and that you keep an eye on the moisture levels of the plant root ball. It’s best to plant in the late afternoon after the sun has set so the plant has a chance to adjust to its new location in the cool of the night. If your new plant is wilting during the heat of the day, set up a shade cloth in front of the plant and spritz with water to moisten the foliage and top layer of soil. Check the soil moisture levels for the first week or two before putting it on a regular water schedule with the rest of your landscape. herbicide recipes on Facebook and Pinterest that are supposed to be as effective as Roundup. The conversation and opinions about vinegar versus glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup) are all over social media and gardening websites these days. Comparing the effectiveness between the two herbicides is difficult because they both work, depending on the situation.

The homemade herbicide recipe usually involves vinegar (acetic acid), salt (sodium chloride) and dish soap.

This combination of acid, salt and soap will definitely kill many annual weeds, especially if the weeds are small. The homemade herbicide will burn the top growth of the weed faster than glyphosate, but glyphosate will work better long term, especially on large or perennial weeds.

Glyphosate is systemic, meaning it

travels throughout the plant, including the roots, to kill all parts of the plants. The vinegar and salt solution only burns the parts of the plant it touches and cannot travel through the plant. That said, if you want to kill weeds that are among desirable plants, spot spraying with the vinegar solution is safer.

Surprisingly, the cost of using the homemade herbicide is 40 percent higher than the glyphosate according to the “Weed Control Freaks,” aka Andrew Kniss and Brian Mealor from the University of Wyoming.

They found that by using vinegar, salt and dish soap from Walmart, one gallon of herbicide would cost $2.70.

Mixing 2.5 fluid ounces of glyphosate with one gallon of water only costs $1.09. They also measured the toxicity of the two herbicides. You can read their full report at www.weed controlfreaks.com.

They have brittle roots that break easily. Plant these broken pieces and they will grow.  Divide bearded irises that are crowded or did not bloom well. Cut them apart and discard old, large or diseased rhizomes.  Be patient with peppers and tomatoes.

When the temperature is over 90 degrees, they won’t set fruit. Shading the plant with a screen or lightweight fabric will help during this hot period.  Pick herbs with scissors in the early morning. Hosta - By July, we’re all looking for a little shade from the hot sun. Wouldn’t it be nice to share it with a plant that thrives in shade and looks great for months with little or no maintenance?

Hostas are hardy, herbaceous perennials, meaning they emerge each spring from winter dormancy. They are primarily grown for their foliage, which can come in a wide range of colors, shapes and textures. Mature plant size ranges anywhere from two inches in height and four inches in width, up to 36 inches in height and 60 inches (or more) in width.

With this range of choices, you will find a hosta for almost every landscape situation—containers, borders and groundcovers under large trees. Hostas look fabulous when planted among the few other shade-loving plants like dicentra (bleeding heart), ferns and hydrangeas.

Hostas need full shade, especially in late afternoon. Some morning sun is okay but any sun after noon will probably scorch the beautiful leaves. Hostas are not xeric, so regular watering is a must.

After a few years, dividing your hosta is easy and can be done anytime between spring and the first frost.

4) Read and follow label instructions.

Be responsible by always reading and following all label instructions when using any pesticide product. Make

sure to choose the right product for your problem and apply it correctly.

5) Plant generously. Lots of flowers are more attractive to pollinators than single plants.

Verna has reinforced my strong belief in the importance of family, to live life to the fullest, and how to keep a positive attitude and fighting spirit during such a difficult time. I have learned not to always ask how she is feeling, because she told me at this point, she doesn’t really ever feel well. Point taken. Now I focus on letting her know how glad I am to see her and how I can make her life a little more comfortable. I make an effort to find a way to make her smile or laugh each visit, and bring out that twinkle in her eye.

I have been surprised at the number of people who tell me, “Oh, I could never do that,” when I share my volunteer experience.

There is no script, as each person’s dying experience is unique. Listening and your presence are more important than anything. Just being there is the greatest gift you can offer a HopeWest patient.

“I love working with our volunteers because I love seeing the difference they make in the lives of our patients and families by doing small and simple acts of service,” HopeWest Director of Volunteer Services Chelsea Jensen said. “Sometimes it is all the little things that make up the big things in life.”

I treasure each minute with Verna and am so honored to say she is part of my life. I looked forward to being a blessing in her life, but it is she who is a blessing in mine.

I don’t know what my end of life will look like, but I hope someone will be there for me someday.

The community rallied to get its local CBS/FOX carrier back on the air. Local businesses donated funds and equipment to aid in the recovery. While a new facility was constructed from the ground up, CBS and FOX feeds were picked up by Bresnan Communications.

Dish Network temporarily replaced KREX and KFQX with their Denver counterparts, KCNC-TV and KDVR, respectively.

Thankfully, a $130,000 transmitter survived the fire without significant damage. The transmitter was reassembled and the control room was temporarily housed in a mobile home. The station’s master control equipment was upgraded to alldigital equipment. The KREX news operation moved into temporary quarters at the PBS broadcasting studio at Western Colorado Community College.

The new broadcast facility sits on its original site on Hillcrest Manor.

General Manager Randy Stone, who took the reins several months after KREX was rebuilt, acknowledged that he was handed a sweet deal.

“It was nice to walk into a new building,” he said. “I didn’t experience the tough times working out of trailers.”

ews Channel 5 KREX-TV has survived economic ups and downs, a historic fire, the inevitable transition from analog to the digital age, and ownership changes in its 60 years of broadcasting on the western slope.

Lured from the Front Range in 1931 by the Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce, radio pioneer Rex Howell brought his self-taught engineering skills and KFXJ radio (AM 920) to an eager audience. He secured a $1,000 check to set up operations, which was no small thing to wrangle from a lone investor during the Great Depression. Howell used the seed money to put KFXJ on the air, and introduced the first television broadcast to Grand Junction on May 22, 1954.

In the spring of 1956 News Channel 5 was launched, carrying programs from all major networks: ABC and NBC, with CBS as a primary affiliate. A satellite station in Montrose was added and the call letters were changed to KREX-AM-TV. KREX had no competitors until KJCT News 8 was established in 1979, taking ABC programming.

KKCO 11 News aired NBC programs when they signed on in 1996.

In November 2013, Gray Television purchased Hoak Media and Parker Broadcasting in a $335 million deal.

Gray currently owns KKCO and operates KJCT, so they allowed KREX and KFQX (FOX) to be picked up by thirdparty interests. In June 2014, KREX and its satellites were sold to Nexstar Broadcasting Group, the largest broadcasting company in the United States.

Today, the broadcasting granddaddy is comprised of KREX-TV Grand Junction and its satellite stations, KREG Glenwood Springs, and KREY Montrose. KREX operates the largest translator network of any commercial station in Colorado, utilizing 60 lowpower repeaters.

KREX made headline news when a devastating fire demolished the broadcast facility in January 2008. No employees were hurt, but the station suffered equipment and infrastructure losses, including five decades of irreplaceable photographs, file tapes and comprehensive catalogs of Grand Valley history. Stone said that one of the realities of small market media is the turnover in staff.

“This is the first stop for reporters in their careers,” he said. “For news anchors, working in Grand Junction is a way to advance their careers. They come here to gain experience, to polish their skills and to learn.”

KREX is comprised of three major departments: news, sales and engineering.

“We assign reporters to specific news beats like city council and the police department,” he said.

KREX’s news staff also relies on feeds from CBS and Denver stations, police radio frequency scanners and incident reports.

Stone’s background is media sales.

He regularly glances at television

screens in his office to monitor local advertising. He says the relationship between sales and news is simple: “If you can’t pay the bills, you can’t deliver the news.”

Keeping air operations going is a 24/7 proposition for KREX, but Stone had high praise for Studio and Tower Engineer Jared Kenyon.

“We have the best engineer I’ve ever worked with,” he said.

Stone also gave credit to Shelley Moore, known by 46 employees as the “station mom,” for being the glue that holds them together.

“She’s been with KREX for 26 years,” Stone said. “She knows the history, traffic, billing, collections, human resources—you name it.”

Stone said he will never retire from KREX. “I’m proud of the people and tradition of this station,” he said.

“There is a legacy here.” ■

“You don’t have to be extraordinary in any of the headline-grabbing ways,” Finley said. “What you need is the self-awareness to avoid wasting money on short-term, retail-priced happiness.”

Who wouldn’t report elder abuse?

here’s a new law that you should familiarize yourself with.

As of July 1, it is now mandated

by Colorado state law that certain people must report suspected abuse, neglect or exploitation of those individuals age 70 and older. Before we get into the specifics, it makes one wonder why such common-sense decency would need to be mandated.

Do you remember the show that ended “Seinfeld’s” nine-year reign as America’s favorite television comedy?

Jerry, Elaine, George and Kramer were headed to Paris when their private plane had mechanical problems, forcing it to land in a small New England town. While awaiting the plane’s repair, they decided to take in some of the local color. While strolling the town’s quaint main street, they witnessed a hapless man being robbed. In typical “Seinfeld” fashion, the funny foursome began to crack wise by making derisive observations about the situation, while offering no assistance of their own.

The “good Samaritan” law This town was prepared for such big-city scallywags and their selfserving indifference to the suffering of others. Indeed, the townsfolk had recently made it law that able-bodied people are lawfully compelled to intervene by offering aid to victims such as the one they observed.

Through the course of the trial, we witness a host of previous characters from the show’s many episodes paint a hilarious and sometimes sad portrait of the selfish natures of Jerry, Elaine, George and Kramer.

Here’s my question.

Besides offering a way to relive the hilarious history of the “Seinfeld” series, was the TV show also lampooning society’s need to legislate what should be common decency?

Elder abuse is no laughing matter Back to my question: Who wouldn’t

Unfortunately, there are some nasty people out there. According to Candace McGuire, the adult protection supervisor with the Mesa County Department of Human Services, the number of reported incidents of elder abuse during the first quarter of this year is up 9.2 percent over last year.

The state is projecting a 15 percent rise in cases once the mandatory reporting law goes into effect.

Can faith and patriotism coexist?

s I was researching topics for this article, I was amazed at the number of websites I found dealing with faith and patriotism and how, or even if, they can coexist.

For me, that has never been a question, but here are some scriptures I found about faith and governing bodies.

“Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

(Mark 12:17) This was Jesus’ response when asked about paying Roman taxes.

“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior.”

(1 Timothy 2:1-3) Paul wrote this to Timothy for all church leaders to establish church standards.

I believe that the above scriptures confirm the biblical support for peaceful coexistence between the faithful and their governing bodies.

Fast forward to the 21st century.

Today we exist in a country that was founded by our staunchly faithful forefathers. Over the next 150 years, this nation spread across a great

continent, stretching from ocean to ocean and forming the first federal republic of its kind.

Whether we are descendants of George Washington himself or have newly arrived to this country, we cannot deny the pride of being a part of something so successful and powerful.

So here we are, tremendously proud of our country, which makes us protective of her. Ah, patriotism! We want to be good stewards of her lands.

“And God blessed them. And God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.’”

(Genesis 1:28) We want to keep her people safe and provided for.

“In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” (Acts 20:35) We can be patriotic and faithful.

But keeping God above all else will always be a reminder of who has been the provider of all these things.

f all of the digital devices around today, the Apple iPhone and iPad are two of the handiest and most useful tools available. There’s an app for almost everything on these devices, but a negative side effect is that many of these apps can drain your battery life quickly and can cause you to employ a midafternoon charge to get through the day.

What’s hogging my battery?

In general there are a few big items that will draw the majority of the power out of your device. Let’s start with the most obvious ones. If you have a Bluetooth device that you connect to your iPhone or iPad, this will certainly affect your battery life. So remember to turn the Bluetooth off on your device when you are not using it.

How do I turn off Bluetooth?

Settings  Bluetooth  Slide to Off Next is the GPS service. If you use your Apple device to track where you are going in the car, it will really drain the battery. When traveling long distances, look at the maps and get an idea of where you are headed, then close the app and turn the GPS service off until you need it again. While traveling, the GPS service will constantly ping out to the satellites to track your progress, robbing you of power.

The icons will start to wobble and a white minus sign in a red circle will appear in the top left hand corner of each icon. Press that minus sign and the apps will disappear and close.

The love of music and horses took on more of a western slant.

The serendipitous moment came in 2010 when Bukala was shopping for a guitar. She spotted a Gibson 68 in a store while visiting family in Pennsylvania. She looked at it several times during the week and finally purchased it before returning to Colorado.

“I asked the store owner, ‘Can you tell me what this guitar’s been through?’” she said.

Noticing its cracks and scratches, it certainly lived a life before her.

She spent a sleepless night thinking about that old guitar, imagining its history. The next morning she sang and wrote. Her first song, “Old Guitar,” was born. It had taken her a week to buy the guitar and a morning to create its musical history.

Bukala began performing at various local functions and had sung with a partner for a while, but made her local debut at the first Glade Park Cowboy Poetry Festival in 2012. The festival planner, Joanie Dahlen, hired her to perform. When Bukala voiced concern about what she could sing, Joanie remarked, “I’ve heard you perform and you can do anything!”

“My next logical step as a professional musician was to make a CD. People who heard me sing asked, ‘Don’t you have a CD?’ With my husband’s support, I phased myself out of the medical technology field and looked at a full-time music career,” she said. “I finally had enough songs written that I felt good about, so I did my research, gathered some bluegrass musicians, found a local com-

pany and went to work.”

After a lot of effort and personal expense, the result was Bukala’s first CD, “Old Guitar,” published last November.

“What inspires me? Just everyday life,” she said. “Everything has what I call a tagline—kind of a motif that just stands out. Those taglines become the focus of a song for me. In fact, I have a stack of papers at home with one line on each, ready to be made into something. I guess it’s kind of like writing a book, only smaller.

During the drought last summer, I looked at the sky and called out to God to ‘send down the rain,’ a tagline, which became a new song.”

Bukala said she is a schizophrenic musician.

“Who would have thought someone with the rigidity of a classical background could feel comfortable with self-made country music?” she said. “This time of life is a great opportunity to rediscover ourselves. If you have the energy and a plan laid out, that can help you get yourself where you want to be.”

What’s down the road for Bukala?

“I just look forward to more of the same,” she said. “My CD is currently number 25 of the top 30 western/ cowboy albums compiled by the Western Music Association. I’m having a good time and meeting the best people I’ve ever met in my life.

Family reunions provide a link to the past

I

am the youngest of five baby boomer daughters and each of us married and had children. The next generation numbers 12 and many of those kids now have their own kids, spread out all over the United States and beyond.

Over the years it was rare for the whole family to be at the same place at the same time. In 1998, we all made it a priority to have Thanksgiving in Colorado Springs because my sister, Carole, was in the final stages of a deadly form of breast cancer.

In spite of the circumstance, it was wonderful to all be together.

In 2009 we finally decided to plan the first Israel family reunion.

One of my sisters and her daughter scouted places in Colorado, where a majority of us live, and selected the YMCA of the Rockies near Estes Park for the reunion.

Close to 40 family members attended the reunion in 2010 and my youngest daughter and her fiancé decided to have their wedding during the festivities since the family would already be together. The reunion was very successful so we decided to have the second reunion in four years.

Planning for the 2014 reunion began last summer and the process was very high tech and participatory. My older daughter and one of the cousins spearheaded the effort, starting with the creation of a closed Facebook group. Each step of the planning was vetted by the entire family and people were able to vote on activities and the location for the gathering.

Setting a date for the reunion was accomplished by narrowing down a time range and after a challenging juggling act, dates were selected.

A list of five potential venues for

the reunion was created, taking into account cost, food, activities and accommodations. Most of the research was done through phone calls and Internet searches. Family members scouted two locations and online voting commenced. The location needed to be chosen almost a year in advance to assure reservations.

In a close race, Fort Worden on the Olympic Peninsula northeast of Seattle edged out Winter Park YMCA in the Colorado Rockies by one vote.

Fort Worden once was an Army base and is now a state park. Accommodations range from camping or RV sites to officer and NCO houses and barracks.

We opted for houses and the boomers will share one unit with four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a large kitchen and a common room. The cousins and their broods have divided up in several other houses. Our reservations include a free continental breakfast and we have reserved an outdoor kitchen with a fire pit for a group barbecue on the last evening of the reunion. There are three restaurants at the park offering a variety of local, organic food.

Some families are driving to Seattle while others are flying. A car is a necessity and Fort Worden is most accessible by ferry. There are beaches and water activities, including kayaking. Historical sites and a lighthouse are all on park grounds within walking distance. We are counting down the days until we are able to reconnect for our next family adventure.

“My father was one of seven children born to Scottish emigrants,” Carol said.

Most of the family still lives near Bradford, Pennsylvania so they rotate responsibility for planning the reunion.

The reunion has been held at individual residences but often the one-day potluck event is at a city park with a variety of family activities. Relatives who have traveled a distance often spend time with smaller family groups in addition to the reunion.

The gathering regularly draws 50 to 75 people but has topped 150 on rare occasions.

Carol said the reunion is a chance to remember years past, see new babies and catch up with everyone.

Family videos capture cherished memories including the many years spent attending reunions with her father.

“Some of my favorite memories are of the music and bonfires with guitars, harmonicas and singing filling the night,” she said.

Getting to know your roots Each year Caren Stephens and her family get together for a reunion lasting from Thursday through Sun-

day on Grand Mesa or in Cimarron, Colorado. Each family brings its own food and on Sunday there is a themed group meal under the family tent. In addition to food, between 75 and 150 relatives introduce new family members, announce exciting news and commemorate anyone who has died in the past year.

The group keeps busy with a horseshoe tournament, 4-wheeling, egg toss, piñatas, board games and other activities. Stephens’ uncle started the tradition to keep the family close as it grew in size.

“The reunion is now a very important and fun event for all of the family,” Stephens said.

Kristen and Andres Madril attended a weekend family reunion at Ridgway State Park in June. Some family members camped while others brought RVs. Everyone was responsible for their own food and a communal cookout capped the weekend. The reunion location had a variety of inexpensive accommodations allowing more people to attend.

It has been eight years since the Madril family’s last reunion. Like many families they rely on weddings and funerals to bring them together.

“The most important aspect for me is for our kids to know their family,” Kristen said. “It’s hard for your kids

to really know and understand you if they never see how you grew up and the people you were around. Even if you travel far from your roots, they have something to do with who you are today.”

Vera Mulder and her husband, Mel, traveled to an affordable lake resort near Branson, Missouri for their latest family reunion. The Midwestern location made it easier for 40 to 50 family members to attend. Mulder had such a good time at the venue she would like to return.

“It was like stepping back to the ’70s or ’80s,” she said, “very safe, family friendly and not overly commercial.”

Mulder’s sister lives in a central location and planned the most recent reunion. Every four or five years the family meets, usually for a weekend reunion. However, the latest lasted nearly a week, with family members coming and going as schedules allowed.

Mulder reiterated the concept of family reunions as a link to the past.

“Noting the lack of information about my ancestors, I think it is necessary to record family and learn about their lives,” she said. “Electronics seem to hold our attention and people forget to pay attention to their own. I think this is important.” ■

Gunnison River cleanup and float trip The Western Slope Adventurers, along with the Grand Junction BLM and Colorado Canyons Association (CCA), are planning a Gunnison River cleanup from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., meeting at the Escalante Creek Road (parking just off Highway 50 between Whitewater and Delta).

They plan to divide participants into two groups, cleaning two portions of the river. One group will do the Escalante to Bridgeport section while the other group does the Bridgeport to Whitewater portion of the river.

According to Jerry’s River Guide, these two sections are equal length and both rated class I-II. Colorado Canyons Association will supply trash bags and rubber gloves. Ignorance of our history threatens our democracy, historian says

M

any acknowledge that George Washington was our greatest president because of his leadership in defeating the British, the gravitas he provided during the drafting of the U.S. Constitution, and the fact that he relinquished his power after serving two terms, historian Dave Richards said. Few Americans are aware, however, that as commander in chief, Washington also halted a budding army insurrection, a potential coup that likely would have strangled the new democracy.

“It’s referred to as the Newburgh Conspiracy, named for an anonymous letter originated in Newburgh, New York, that was circulating through the Continental Army,” said Richards, author of “Swords in Their Hands: George Washington and the Newburgh Conspiracy.”

“In the autumn of 1782, many Revolutionary War officers in the Hudson Highlands were angry and frustrated that they had not been paid in months—years, for some,” Richards said. “With victory over the British in sight, they began to fear that they would never get their back pay and the postwar pensions they’d been promised because the Continental Congress in Philadelphia, meeting under the Articles of Confederation of 1777, had no power to raise funds to pay them.”

Luckily, our greatest president nipped the potential coup in the bud with an impassioned speech to his officers to respect the supremacy of Congress.

Why is this bit of history so important to us today? Richards said some contemporary problems and passions closely resemble the Revolutionary War zeitgeist that spawned the Newburgh Conspiracy.

“It could happen today,” he warned, citing these developments: • Then and now—ample talk of state secession. Texas has made plenty of noise about leaving the union in recent years. In 2012, more than

125,000 people signed a petition asking the president’s administration to “Peacefully grant the state of Texas to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government.” Three years earlier, Texas Gov. Rick Perry had threatened to secede. The Alaskan Independence Party has been very proactive in advocating for that state’s secession, although that is not the party’s current stance.

• Many counties want to secede from their state. North Colorado, South Florida, Baja Arizona, South California, Northern Virginia, Western Maryland and others all have expressed interest in becoming the next state.

“It’s a similar problem to states who want to leave the union—the legacy of separation itself could prove tumultuous and of course, a secession could create a domino effect and weaken the country,” Richards said.

• We’re failing on our commitment to our veterans. The U.S. military force today is beyond comparison to Washington’s Continental Army.

Today, homelessness, unemployment, rampant PTSD, depression, divorce and disabling war injuries plague our military, and the government is slow in responding with health care. In 2013, it took more than a month, on average, for veterans to begin seeing a psychiatrist for therapy, and in 2012, at least two veterans died while waiting to see a doctor.

“Provided the status quo remains stable enough, without suffering another catastrophic economic depression, the balkanization of the United States should remain a preference only for a fringe portion of the population,” Richards said. “But then again, many are primed to secede should our fortunes sour.”

If Bergdahl was AWOL, which seems to be coming more and more apparent, it makes the question even more compelling. Different kinds of networks have different goals and ways of attaining them. St. Mary’s and the physician group Primary Care Partners have announced plans to form a Clinically Integrated Network or CIN. In a CIN, a patient’s various healthcare providers work together closely, sharing patient information, best treatment practices and ideas. This integration helps patients, especially those with chronic conditions, manage their health so they don’t end up in the hospital.

A CIN can include a hospital, independent physicians, hospital-employed physicians, and outpatient centers, offering patients a wide, inclusive network. St. Mary’s and Primary Care Partners are the founding members of the CIN but opportunities for other providers to partner will be explored. The legal and organizational work of establishing the CIN is estimated to take six months.

This is an exciting opportunity to once again demonstrate the collaborative spirit for which the Mesa County healthcare community has become nationally known.
