TWhere Did All This Snow Come From?

his winter, Southern Georgian Bay has seen an unusually high amount of snow. We had a significant snowfall in late November and early December, followed by two more strong storms in February The total accumulation last month was around 3 feet and has been tough on our backs, shovels, and snowblowers!

I often hear people say, “I was looking forward to global warming for warmer temperatures and less snow,” while others remark, “This feels like the kind of winters we used to have - they're coming back!” So, what exactly is going on? It won't come as a surprise that we live in a snowbelt - an area downwind of the Great Lakes where heavy snowfall arrives fast and furious. As you can see from this diagram, Georgian Bay is right in the heart of it.

The Lake Effect: Why We Get So Much Snow Being in a snowbelt means we experience lake-effect snow This occurs when cold air moves across the relatively warm, open waters of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay The air picks up moisture and heat from the lake, rises into the atmosphere, cools, and then releases that moisture as snow. Lake-effect snow is especially intense early in the season when the lakes are at their warmest and before they freeze over (See diagram for a visual explanation.)

Climate Change and Future Snowfall

Experts predict that as the planet warms, most of Canada will see reduced snowfall due to higher temperatures. However, communities along the Great Lakes - like ours - may be an exception. Warmer lake temperatures and reduced ice cover will lead to more evaporation, fuelling heavier lake-effect snow when cold air moves across.

For all you amateur meteorologists out there, you know that the El Niño / Southern Oscillation (ENSO) — the entire El Niño and La Niña system — is the single most predictable influence on year-to-year variations in average winter precipitation. We are currently in the La Niña phase, which historically brings increased precipitation.Additionally, human-induced climate change is intensifying all weather patterns, making its effects even more pronounced. What does this mean for us? Expect some spring flooding, but for now, it's time to embrace winter!Try out a fun snow sport, and keep your snowblower in top shape - snowy winters are likely here to stay

Snowmobilers and cyclists are in a standoff, both trying to claim the same trail… March problems in Wasaga Beach.

March: the month where you experience all four seasons in a single afternoon.

You know it's almost spring in Wasaga when the seagulls start showing up for their summer jobs - stealing fries and annoying tourists.

Daylight Saving Time is proof that even clocks get jet lag.

Winter's almost over in Wasaga Beach! Time to switch from complaining about the snow and cold to complaining about the Victoria Day Weekend traffic.

Spring cleaning? More like aggressively shuffling clutter from one room to another.

I need to re-home a dog. It's a small terrier and tends to bark a lot. If you're interested, let me know and I'll jump over my neighbours fence and get it for you.

Leprechauns have it easy - no one questions their gold hoarding or day drinking.

NO PEEKING

St. Patrick's Day in Wasaga Beach: If you

see someone dressed head-to-toe in green, they're either feeling festive or just really excited for golf season.

Raise your hand if you have already spent your daylight savings.

They say March comes in like a lion, but in Wasaga Beach, it comes in like a confused seagull caught in a snow squall.

The best part of March in Wasaga? The ice melts just in time for the first group of brave souls to test the water - and immediately regret it.

Spring is near! Soon, the only ice left will be in our drinks on the patio… we hope.

Wal-Mart announced they will close 108 stores putting 16 cashiers out of work.

I don't know who I feel more sorry for.. myself for never being able to find where I parked my car?.. or the poor fellow following me through the parking lot hoping to take my parking space...

In fact, yes, l can multitask. I can screw up several things at once.

Admit it. Every once in a while you say "Open Sesame" while walking up to an automatic door.
