On Wednesday, December 13th, the De Kalb Tiger Pride Band and the Choir had their annual winter concert. The Choir, which has 17 members sang four songs, including “Do You Love Me,” “See You Again,” “Be the Light,” and “It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.” The band, with 27 members, played three songs: “My Favorite Things,” “In This Beautiful Place,” and “The March of the Sad Santa.” Freshman Camry Hanshaw says that she likes choir this year and thinks “the performance went well.” Mrs. King says she's very pleased with how the concert went. “The choir isn't used to performing in front of people, so they were a little nervous,” but overall, it was a great way to celebrate their hard work this year.

DeKalb Starts A New Tradition By: Ashlee Derry The Christmas spirit has been brought into De Kalb again this year because of December Days. Mrs. Powell, our Counselor, has decided to bring in the holiday in many different ways each day. She has made dress-up days and has even let us do many different activities at lunch and study hall over the month. Every student is allowed to participate and to have fun dressing up and enjoying the fun games that have taken place throughout the month of December. Some of the activities that have happened are dress-up days, fun little challenges, and some Christmas karaoke. Mrs. Powell said, “I have done December Days at the previous schools I have worked at, and they have all enjoyed it so I hope everyone here has, too.” Mrs. Powell is hoping to get some joy out of the students and staff here at Dekalb and is looking forward to doing December Days in the future school years. We all have enjoyed December Days and are glad Mrs. Powell has come up with the ideas for it.

There is a new custodian at De Kalb. His name is Jeff Kennedy. He is from Saint Joseph, and his last job was working as a technician at Averhealth. His favorite thing about De Kalb so far is that he likes the people. He does a lot for our school, but in his free time, he likes to play guitar, specifically rock music. If you happen to see him in the halls, make sure to welcome him to the Tiger Family!

What To Read By: R.Marshall.M

What to Play By: Boston Burdette

Call of Duty Black Ops 3 is probably my 2nd favorite Call of Duty game, Call of Duty Black Ops 3. I’ve got to say, it is very fun and has got the best zombie campaign out of every Call of Duty. The multiplayer is also very exciting because the bots now act more like a player making the game even more intense and makes it harder than it ever was before. The campaign is pretty deep with the quote “Let your thoughts drift. Let the bad memories fade.

Let

peace

be

upon

you.

Surrender yourself to your dreams. Imagin yourself in a Frozen Forest.” at WARNING : SPOILERS AHEAD In the second book in the Defy The Night trilogy, our characters Tessa and Corrick have held off the rebellion...for now. With a diplomat returning to the kingdom after 7 years, suspicion runs high among the kingdom and the people about the intentions of these sailors. With Corrick and Tessa left with no choice but to follow the diplomat to a neighboring kingdom in order to aquire more moonflower, a new outlaw emerges from the wilds and helps with a robin hood type of persona. With his brother gone, Harristan has nobody to help him with the rebels breathing down his neck. Will the Kingdom fall for good? Or will new heros step up and save the Kingdom once and for all? It’s a good read that contuines the series and adds a little spice to mix. I give it a 4/5 stars while good reads would give it a 4.2/5 stars.

the same time has a lot of work put into it. I give it four stars and other people give it 3.6 stars

What to Listen To By: Ashlee Derry

Basketball is one of the most popular sports among our student body, and the middle school girls' team showed how much they enjoy the sport with their season record of 8-8. The girls had a lot to say about their season and were proud of how much they had improved both their skill and determination. Alivia Hall says, “I think my ball handling improved, and I’d like to improve on how often I shoot the ball.” On a similar note, Lily Wagner said, “I think I got better at shooting free throws, and not rushing my shots. I’d like to get better at making sure my shots are all in one motion instead of being hesitant.” Even though the Middle School girls' team ended the season with an average record of 8-8, but the score gap on their losses was slim at almost every game. Shaylee Philips says, “I think we fought really hard and got better every game.” That wasn’t to say that they didn't have hardships. During a game in the Winston Tournament against Union Star, two of the players for De Kalb fouled out, leaving three girls to play. Against the odds, they still secured a win for the team. Coach Audrey Elifrits left me with this quote on the team's performance: “I thought we made a lot of progress, we had a lot of good memories. There were some queens of the court out there, and next season has us all excited for what it brings.”

Lady Tigers Off to a Strong Start this Season By: Gavin Moore

Photo Credit: Austin Chisam The Lady Tigers have put up an impressive season so far this year. They’ve worked very hard to perform as well as they have. So far, in the 2023 season, the High School Girls Basketball team has played 4 regular season games plus the Platte Valley Invitational games. They’ve had some success this season, with 4 wins over these 7 games. They worked very hard to beat Stewartsville in the PVI and regular season games. The girls’ team finished the tournament by winning the Consolation trophy. Senior Harlie Hall said “It’s going better that we thought so far, and we work together well as a team.” Their losses have been very close, intense games. When asked how they could improve, Senior Rachel Reagan says, “We need to move the ball more and get more shots up. We need to do better on defense too.” This is Coach Rumpf’s first season as the coach for the Lady Tigers. He’s proven that he can take the challenge and coach these girls and put them on track to have an outstanding season. He says, “This season has been a lot of fun so far. The girls have been working extremely hard each and every day and it’s showing in our games.” We hope to see many of you coming out to the games and cheering loudly for our Lady Tigers!

First Annual Christmas Door Decorations By: Maggie Hall

This year's Christmas Door Decorating contest winner is Coach Wardlow’s Study Hall. The theme of his door was Hawaiian. Seniors Carl Ranada, Marshall Jones, Nate Lance, Shelby Pinaire, and Nat Griffin decorated the door. Coach Wardlow says that he thought “fosho” that they were going to win, and he also stated “Champions come to win, and when it's meant to be, it's meant to be. We play for keeps, second place is the first loser, and we ain't ’bout that life. We play to win the game, and if you can't run with the big dogs, stay on the porch.” Congratulations to Coach Wardlow and his study hall, and to the runners up, Mrs. King’s and Mrs. McDonald’s Study Hall classes! DeKalb’s Favorite Grinch By: Shelby Pinaire With the holiday season upon us, it's time to break out the holiday films. One of the most notable holiday films is, of course, The Grinch. It doesn't matter which version you prefer, The Grinch is an iconic Christmas character. Each version is notable in their own way, to Jim Carrye’s comedy portrait of him, to the classic cartoon narrated by Boris Karloff. Then the most recent one is the modern cartoon in which Benedict Cumberbatch voices the Grinch. This holiday season, gather round and re-watch the Grinch and his adventure to steal christmas. OG Grinch 22.6%

JC's Grinch 64.5%
