THE BLACK AND GOLD

Rushville Elementary Honors Veterans

On November 11th, the Tiger Pride Band played at Rushville Elementary for an assembly in honor of Veterans Day This was the Band’s 3rd year playing at the elementary school As always, it was an honor to play for our veterans.

Rushville holds an assembly every year on Veterans’ Day to honor those who have served this country and its people. The assembly is a chance for us to recognize those who have served by playing music, such as the Armed Forces Medley; our elementary students sing songs like The National Anthem; and occasionally, our teachers who are veterans occasionally give a speech.

Students are given the honor of bringing their family members who have served to this assembly To honor our veterans, show up every year on November 11th at the Ruhville Elementary school Thank you to all the veterans who have served and sacrificed for our country!

Middle School Boys Basketball Perseveres Through Tough Week What to Watch

If you are looking for a good movie to watch, I recommend Interstellar. Interstellar, starring Matthew McConaughey, directed by Christopher Nolan, and written by Johnathon Nolan, came out in 2014. It got 73% on Rotten Tomatoes. It grossed $730 million in the box office on a $165 million budget.

Interstellar opens up in 2067 with a dream of Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) being in a plane crash while piloting a jet from when he was a pilot for NASA Cooper is now a farmer whose crops are dying due to a global crop disease His daughter tells him there’s something odd going on in her room that is causing lines of dust to appear on her floor

Cooper translates the lines into coordinates, and goes to them and finds a secret organization that is revealed to be the remnants of NASA after they were shut down. The leader of NASA wants him to become a pilot again for an interdimensional expedition in search of a new home for humans

I rate this movie a 5 out of 5 stars because of the cast, cinematography, and plot I would recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys science fiction movies

It was a busy, tough week for our Middle School Basketball boys. On Monday November 10, the boys played at home against West Platte and on Tuesday November 11, they played at Plattsburg against Union Star The final game was on Thursday, November 13, against Mid-Buchanan

“The games have been fun, but we’ve been losing,” says 7th grader Andrew Giddens.

Wyatt Davis, 8 grader, is excited about this season despite the losses. “We never gave up,” Wyatt says. th

Even though none of the games ended with a Tiger victory, the team still has high hopes and plans to work hard at practice to be ready for the next games.

The boys play again at the Winston Tournament starting on Monday November 17.

DeKalb FFA Has an Eggscelent Time Teaching

On Wednesday, November 12, DeKalb FFA members continued their adventures down at Rushville Elementary to teach students about poultry.

Ceci Sherlock has been a part of FFA for all four years of her high school career. Ag Ed on the Move allows students to step into a teaching role. “I love going down to teach the kids because they’re always so excited to learn, and agriculture is very foreign to some of them.”

Because this week’s topic was the poultry industry, Ceci was able to put together an exciting activity for the students. They were able to cut open boiled eggs, examine the different parts of the egg (such as the albumen and yolk), and then they got to taste them in the end.

As these FFA members continue to step into becoming strong role models for young minds, they will rendezvous at the elementary school next Wednesday to teach nutrition.

MS Girls Basketball Has Winning Week

What to Play

On Tuesday, November 11th, 2025, the Middle School Girls Basketball team played a competitive game against Plattsburg, winning 43-17

Coach Carrasquillo proudly said, “The girls did really well and worked hard the whole game. They were aggressive on offense and defense, and they executed our presses well, which gave us multiple opportunities to turn our steals into fast break layups ”

Zoie Nowak, 8th grader, agrees that “the game went very, very good.” Still, the team will keep working on improvements. To continue growing this season, the girls will “probably drive to the basket and communicate,” says Nowak

The Girls' team will play the first game of the Winston Tournament on Monday, November 18, so make sure to support our Middle School girls!

Have you been in the mood for a video game that you can come home to and relax after a long day? I suggest checking out Animal Crossing: New Horizons This game is a perfect balance of cute, warm, and relaxing gameplay mixed with organization and teamwork.

In New Horizons, you take on the role of a little islander whose main goal is to atrract new residents to enjoy your island. This game brings many customization options, such as clothing options, house placements, resident options, and so much more!

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is priced at $59.99. Although the game was released 5 years ago, many people to this day still enjoy the game. Some people play it in order to relax, but some people play it for the warm and comforting feeling that the game brings

The Origins and Importance of Veterans Day

On the eleventh day of the eleventh month at 11 a.m., in 1918, fighting on the Western Front finally ceased World War 1 began on July 28, 1914, and only ended after Germany surrendered to the Allies due to a combination of military collapse, pressure from the Allies’ blockade, and more.

Every year on November 11th, we honor all those who have given time, and even their lives, to protect and serve our country. It was originally called Armistice Day to commemorate those who fought and died in World War I. This was changed to Veterans Day in 1954 by President Eisenhower to better acknowledge all who served, instead of just those who fought in the First World War.

This Tuesday was November 11th, and along with a Veterans Day assembly at Rushville Elementary, soldier Josh Rangel came to teach eighth graders on “the importance of veterans, what they sacrifice, and why Veterans Day is important to acknowledge.” Josh Rangel previously was “a 19 Delta Cavalry Scout” for his four and a half years of service in the US Army.

Rangel did an outstanding presentation on the importance of Veterans’ Day and in educating the Eighth Grade class about this well-respected holiday. Josh Rangel, like many other veterans, chose to serve “out of a place of pride, and just wanting to serve for [his] country.”

Even though Veterans Day has passed, November is still the month to honor those who have fought and served as well as their families. Tell the veterans you know thank you, and The Black and Gold would like to thank all who have dedicated their time to serve our country

FFA Students Help at Second Harvest

On Wednesday, November 12, Mr. Medsker took the FFA students to Second Harvest in Saint Joseph in two shifts Second Harvest is a community service food bank that sends food out to people in need Second Harvest is a national organization with volunteers and workers who organize all the food into bags or boxes of multiples for families

The DeKalb FFA chapter has been volunteering at Second Harvest for 5 years. Many people enjoy going to it. In addition to the opportunity to get out of school and do some hands-on, real-world learning, overall, everyone has fun with it Senior Grace Downing, who was on the first shift, says, “I stapled paper flyers to bags, bagged oranges, and had a grand ol’ time ”

Sophomore Conner Eastbourn also found the experience worthwhile: “I was bagging carrots, and I think it’s a good experience to help with volunteer hours.”

Mr Medsker says that “This year, we netted bagged oranges and carrots to be given away during their mobile pantries I think it is beneficial for the chapter because part of the FFA motto is 'living to serve,' and this is a great opportunity for the entire chapter to serve It’s a way for our FFA chapter to give back to the community.”

What to Listen To

What to Read

The Marias is a global alternative group that has two albums: CINEMA and Submarine. Some songs you may know from the group are No One Noticed, Sienna, and Heavy.

The band also includes Spanish lyrics in their music, such as in extended songs and others like Legos de Ti, Ay no Puerdo, and Hable con Ella With Maria Zardoya, the lead singer of the band, being from Puerto Rico and Spanish being her first language, the blend between English and Spanish makes their music feel like it’s trying to bring other cultures into the mix instead of just regular alternative music.

Some things I know about the band are that after lead singer Maria Zardoya and drummer Josh Conway broke up their seven-year relationship, the band began to fall apart They all attended group and individual therapy, and then came up with Submarine. Submarine is an ethereal pop album that explores the different ways to go through a breakup.

I really like this band, and I give them 5 out of 5 stars because the music is very upbeat but also calm I also just really like alternative bands with female singers

Now that the warm weather is leaving us, we are stuck inside more often than not with little to do Instead of spending hours scrolling mindlessly through social media, you should check out A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

This is about four young men grappling with the newfound challenges of adult life. The four men, fresh out of college, are located in New York City at the beginning of the book Navigating living situations, friends, jobs, and past traumas proves more difficult than the boys previously predicted, and they all show their struggles in unique yet destructive ways

I am currently halfway through this book, and while it was challenging to begin, it has proved well worth it to gain insight into the struggles that so many adults unknowingly experience when they are first thrust into reality I rate this book 4 out of 5 and recommend it to those who are looking for an emotional read Make sure to read trigger warnings for books you plan to read, and have a lovely reading
