2023 GRADUATION

On Sunday, May 13, the school held this year’s graduation for the Senior class of 2023. The event was filled with memories, tears, flowers, and diplomas.

The day was also filled with excitement. Senior Chris Weinmann reflected on the experience, noting that, ”Graduating is a new feeling I'm just glad we can go out and do great things This is small compared to the things we are about to encounter, so I'm just blessed for this day.”

Some graduating students are ready to go right into the workforce. Wyatt Miller says that, ”I’m looking forward to starting my life, getting into the real world, and making money.”

Others are heading to college this fall. Olivia Fisher says she is “ excited because I start college in 3 weeks. I am going to Cleveland University in Kansas City, and I'm studying to be an Occupational Therapist.

Congratulations to all of the Seniors, and we hope that you all achieve great things, whether you're off to college, trade school, military, or the workforce. We are looking forward to seeing the next group of seniors next year.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE SENIORS

LETTER FROM THE EDITORS

Dear De Kalb and Rushville Schools and Community,

Over the past two years, the news staff for The Black and Gold have been lucky enough to gain the support of not only the students, but the community around us as well. We have also been lucky enough to gain not one, but two new cameras through fundraising and helping run the concession stands. The thing we are most thankful for is the grace and patience that the staff, teachers, and students have shown us while we try to navigate new cameras and constantly interrupt class to document the latest news in our school. Thank you so much, De Kalb and Rushville, for supporting us and allowing us to learn and grow. We are so excited to come back next year and keep doing what we do best.

Sincerely,

STUDENT-STAFF VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT CELEBRATES SENIORS' LAST SCHOOL DAY

On Friday, May 5, the whole school went into the gym for a High School volleyball game. The High School and the staff got to participate.

The game was put on by Ms. Cagle and the Student Council. They had to create the bracket and form the roster, as well as assign refs, announcers, and someone to run the clock. “My main role was to develop the timetable to make sure we had the right amount of time for each game and wouldn't go too long or too short from the time students were released," says Ms. Cagle.

The volleyball game went well. Everyone who wanted to play had the chance to. “Many thanks to Gracie Hanshaw for developing the bracket, to Rylie Johnson for helping decide the game match-ups, and to Tori Hawk and Shyann Nowak for getting the roster of players for each class." Mr. Wildhaber (Dubs) says, “It went really well, I think all of the games were competitive and enjoyable to watch." Students were also glad about how it turned out. “It went well because I carried the team," says Junior Carl-J Ranada.

The olleyball game was a great way to help end the year for all students. “I hope to continue this tradition next year and for years to come as I believe the students and faculty had a great time during this year's volleyball tournament. That and it was fun to add in a new event as a 'senior send-off' before this year's group of seniors graduated,” says Ms. Cagle.

BASEBALL SEASON COMES TO AN END

As this year's baseball season comes to an end, all the players have to be reflecting on this season and thinking about the next one.

Junior Jayden Schneider says, ”I think our last district game went well. We played as a team and we were able to get hits. There was room for us to improve. I plan on playing baseball next year. It's fun and you get to hang out with friends”. When asked what his goal was, he said,” to win at least one game which I do think is possible. We had a lot of new guys which was hard, but since we’ve been working as a team, it should be easier“.

Coach Aaron Matthews says that.” This season started out rough with a bunch of young, new guys. We improved throughout the year and we made good stats during the course of the year." When asked what his hopes for next season are, he said that,” I hope all the boys we had this year come back this year and hopefully have a successful season”.

Good job for working so hard this year and we look forward to seeing you all in next year’s season.

DE KALB STAFF AND STUDENTS SPEAK ABOUT ASIAN HERITAGE MONTH

Some people worldwide and around De Kalb are celebrating Asian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Asian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month is celebrated through May. We use this month to recognize the achievements of Asian/Pacific Islanders. The reason May is Asian Heritage Month is that the first Japanese person to emigrate to the United States was on May 7, 1843, and the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad was on May 10, 1869.

Mr. Wildhaber is half-Japanese and was born in Okinawa while his father was stationed there. He didn’t have any current traditions, but his mother wants the same preservation of life that their culture does. One struggle he stated is stereotypes. One of the stereotypes he shared is being seen as “smart.” It is a compliment to be called smart, but because it is a stereotype it is bad. He feels it is good to have an Asian/Pacific Islander month because it’s a good time to not only learn about culture but about history.

Carl, a junior, is Filipino and he doesn’t have any traditions currently that have to do with his culture. He says he has no struggles with having Asian/Pacific Islander heritage, but he thinks it’s cool having a month about his heritage.

Chris, a senior, is South Korean, and he his brother immigrated to the United States. He said he has no struggle with having Asian heritage and is doing perfectly fine. He doesn’t have any traditions that have to do with his heritage. Chris said, “I’m not really part of it, I’m just Asain.” He thinks having a month dedicated to it is unique. He’s glad he is what he is He likes that people can be different and still be accepted.

Josie, an 8th grader, is also South Korean. Her mother was born in South Korea, and immigrated to the US when she was very young. She said she doesn’t have any traditions, and finds Asian Heritage month pretty cool. She feels that having that recognition is important for cultural reasons She doesn’t really find any struggles. She said, “I'm just genetically different!”

DE KALB STUDENTS ENJOY MUSHROOM HUNTING

De Kalb students like to go mushroom hunting because it is a fun thing to do and a chance to get exercise. Mushrooms are also tasty.

During this mushroom season, 7th grader Kale Cassity found an average 5 or 6 pounds. He can sell morel mushrooms for upwards to 20 dollars a pound, which is decent money.

7th grader Connor Eastbourn also enjoys mushroom hunting. He says, “It was a good season. I found a lot of mushrooms, and I look forward to hunting again next year.”

What To Watch

Yet, all of the movies connect. The first movie takes place in Woodsboro, California, where there is a "normal" group of six friends. When the first murder occurs, it happens to be the main character's mother, Maureen. The killings only started after Billy Loomis (one of the two killers) found out that Maureen was having an affair with his dad (Hank), causing his parents to split up. A year after Maureen's murder, Billy and a friend go on a murder spree Sydney, the final girl who appears in 5 of 6 of the movies, goes head to head with ghostface

Scream 6 takes place in New York City, one year after the Woodsboro killings that take place in Scream 5, 27 years after the original killings. Sam Carpenter (Billy Loomis’s child after an affair) and Tara Carpenter (Sam’s younger half-sister) moved to New York City with the other two survivors from Scream 5, Chad and Mindy MeeksMartin (The Core Four). The Core Four, their new friends, and survivors from past movies begin to be stalked and killed by a new ghostface.

Will there be a Scream 7? Who knows? But with this franchise, anything is possible You can stream all of the Scream movies on Paramount Plus.

WHAT TO PLAY

Dead Island 2 is a 2023 action role-playing game published by Deep Silver and developed by Dambuster Studios. It is a sequel to the previous game Dead Island and the third game in the Dead Island series. The game has single and multiplayer modes. The game starts about 15 years after Dead Island. In the game, the United States government and US military are forced to put Los Angeles under a quarantine due to a stronger form of the outbreak. The games ratings are 75% on Metacritic, 75% on OpenCritic, and about 92% of Ggoogle users like this game. I would recommend this game to anyone who likes fighting zombies and gore. I would give the game an 8/10.

WHAT TO READ

If you're ever wondering about a Track event or even when the next FFA event is, you should take a look at the school newspaper, The Black and Gold. The school newspaper is an amazing way to get information on things happening in the community and to learn some more about fellow students and other important things happening in the world . The Black and Gold also has fun stories on random events as well.
