STUDENTS LEAD PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES
BY:HELAINA GEOFFROY
On Tuesday, March 7 and Thursday, March 9 the BCR4 School District had their spring Parent Teacher Conferences. This is the first year that students had to lead their own conference instead of the teachers talking through it.
“Student-led conferences help to improve attendance at conferences, it helps make the conference for parents feel more valuable, and it also helps students to take ownership of their learning. This is something that I think will benefit our students in the future as well. Anytime a student can have an open conversation with their teacher and parents all on the same page it is beneficial”, says our Principal, Mr. Chisam.
Mr. Chisam got the idea of Student Led Conferences through other schools doing it Not only did students lead their own conference. But, different groups around the school made a poster or project board. With the details about what they do. Those groups included Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), National Honor Society (NHS), Band, Newspaper, Yearbook, and Future Farmers of America (FFA).
“It is important for students to lead their conferences because it forces them to assess what is going on with their grades It allows for them to become accountable for their education”, says our Counselor, Mrs. Powell.
Senior Rylie Johnson had the idea for the booths in the commons to encourage student participation in different organizations Riley brought this idea to the Principal Advisory Committee Meeting and they appreciated her input that represents the student body.
For the students who went to conferences. They were all given 3 tardy passes and put into a raffle for different prizes “I like that I got to put in my input, and I didn’t have to sit there and be quiet about my thoughts”, says Freshman Kenzie Pflugradt. Kenzie and 8th grader Hemi Donaldson won the raffle. The prizes given to both of them were 2 gift cards, a shirt, a cup, and a package of gummies
