ST. PATRICK'S DAY HISTORY
BY:TRICIA SIMPSON
On March 17, 2023, many of us celebrated St. Patrick’s day. A lot of us wore green, went to parades, and even made leprechaun traps, but the celebration started a long way from De Kalb, MO.
St. Patrick’s day started in Ireland and then made its way around the world. St. Patrick’s day was originally a feast and religious celebration in honor of St. Patrick, an Ireland Patron Saint. Many people in Ireland during Lent would give up alcohol, so during this feast, they would drink to celebrate. Coach Wardlow says “That is why now on this day, many people drink.”
We have St. Patrick’s day in honor of St. Patrick. He was the one who brought Catholicism to Ireland. He was a big name in Ireland, and the holiday is on date of his death.
Coach Wardlow wanted to add that “You can wear orange during St. Patrick’s day" because that was another color of the Catholic church.

What to Watch
We all like Christmas movies, and there is something about watching them when it is not the holiday season. Violent Night is one of those movies that you should watch. You can now stream the movie on Peacock.
Violent Night is about Santa Claus, who is played by David Harbour (whom you should recognize from the series Stranger Things) Santa is delivering presents to the Lightstones house when he hears gunshots. A group of robbers are trying to steal $300 million. Little did they know that Santa has a few tricks up his sleeve.
Along with saving the family. Santa is helping Trudy believe in Christmas magic since she has been sad lately due to her parents separating Trudy then helps Santa take down the bad guys Saving the family and taking out the bad guys. This is a great movie to watch if you enjoy action movies and celebrating the Christmas holiday.

Women's history month is in March. This month is to honor women’s contributions to society in America. We are celebrating the countless women who have fought for many years.
There are many women in history who have helped women today be able to do the things we are allowed to do. Marie Curie opened the door for women who are interested in science. Curie was also the first woman to ever win a Nobel Peace Prize. Rosa Parks stood up for black women to allow them to sit where they want on a bus. Susan B Anthony was one of the most visible leaders during the women’s suffrage movement. The suffrage was to get women the right to vote.

There are many things women weren’t able to do before some of these influential women came into play. Women did not gain the right to vote until August 18, 1920. If you put that into perspective, some of our great great grandmothers weren’t allowed to vote. Women also didn’t gain the right to own property until 1900.
There were many things that women weren’t able to do in the past, and some things we are still oppressed about. Some women get criticized for going into a union job, they don’t get paid as much even though they are in the same work field.
Even though things are much different now, women are still going through oppression and still get hatred for things.
