Each class starts with a series of long-held, passive floor poses that mainly work the lower part of the body — the hips, pelvis, inner thighs, and lower spine. These areas are especially rich in connective tissues. The poses are held for up to five minutes, sometimes longer. Bring a yoga mat and wear comfortable clothing.
10 WEEKS
Each class begins with a flowing series to warm up the spine and heat up the body, followed by a series of held postures to build strength, stability, and stamina. Class ends with gentle stretches to improve flexibility. Bring a yoga mat and wear comfortable clothing.

Girls Softball leagues will play in the RAYSA (Roanoke Area Youth Softball Association) League. Teams and practices are formed in Franklin County. Games will be played in Franklin County and the Roanoke Valley. Face masks are required for infielders and batting helmets with face masks are required for all leagues. Soccer teams are formed based on age and school district. Once registration is complete, participants are assigned teams. Coaches will have a meeting mid-March to select practice times, receive rosters/ equipment and pre-season information. Requests for practice days or teams cannot be considered. Teams will begin practice late March and games will begin April 21 - June 14. Any makeup games will be played during the season when possible. Soccer games are played at Rec. Park and Waid Park. Late registrations will be accepted March 4 - 17 with an additional $15 late fee. Participants must be 4 years old as of the May 1, no exceptions. Players who wish to move up must be at least one year from moving up and can do so with permission from a parent. Participant should be registered in their age group with a note giving permission to move to the next league. Participants can move down if there is a medical reason to stay down (within one year) and a doctor’s note must be provided for medical reason.

The Franklin County Lacrosse Club Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to organizing, developing and promoting the sport of lacrosse in Franklin County and surrounding areas. Equipment is available for rental. Equipment rentals require a deposit that is fully refundable after equipment is returned. Equipment hand out will begin late February. Practices for 8U will be one evening per week at Waid Park. Practices for all other leagues are two evenings per week at Waid Park.

YOUTH ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Franklin County Parks and Recreation offers discounts to participate in youth team sports to those who qualify. Participants that receive SNAP benefits qualify to receive a 50% reduction in the participation fee, reducing the cost to $7 for a season versus $15.
To receive this discount, bring a statement of benefits from the FC Social Services Department, along with a photo ID to the Parks and Recreation office to register the participant.

Join Dr. Susan Virginia Mead, Ferrum College Professor Emerita, who returns to Rocky Mount to share a classic that inspired her life’s work: the 1970 Newbery Award winning novel, Sounder by William H. Armstrong, illustrated by James Barkley. Susan will tell the story of Virginian, Charles Addison Vaughan Jones, a Black educator who inspired Armstrong to write Sounder and its sequel Sour Land. Like Armstrong, Dr. Mead hails from the Rockbridge County area of Virginia. She taught sociology at Ferrum College and was integral to its Holocaust and Appalachian studies programs. This Black History Month event is designed for literature lovers of all ages. Beginning with a reception 4:30 pm, Dr. Mead’s talk begins at 5:30 pm. Registration is required. In case of inclement weather, the event will be postponed to February 25th. All ages are welcome.

Join Belle for a needle-felt painting class this spring, where you’ll have the chance to create your own fiber painted cottage, nestled in a beautiful meadow. Your painting will be painted on a 5x7 canvas. This class is designed for intermediate artists, but beginners are welcome. This is a guided class to insure you learn the important steps to fiber painting. All the supplies you need will be provided including matting and frame. Please note that this is a felting technique with colored sheep wool, not painting with actual paint.

Do you dream about huge ollies, board slides, handrails and 360 flips? Even the Bones Brigade had to start with the basics. During this fundamentals day camp, you will have up to 2 hours of one-on-one coaching then a break for lunch (lunch included with registration), followed by 2 more hours of free skate or more coaching. Expect to skate away with individualized learning points with an understanding of how to develop your skills. Helmet is required. Pads are strongly encouraged.

Mountain biking pure and simple. The fall club (March 22 - May 10) will meet 8 consecutive weeks and is coached by BICP certified MTB instructors. This non-competitive club is all about fun. Trail riding and safety considerations will be the primary focus. This club is intended for beginner to intermediate riders ages 8-15. Kids younger than 8 are allowed with parental participation. A limited supply of mountain bikes are available for use. Please contact Parks & Recreation as soon as possible to reserve a bike. Registration is limited.

Back by popular demand is the Virginia DWR youth only stocked trout pond and fishing competition at the Recreation Park. Pack a lunch, grab your tackle box and fishing rod to see if you can win the trophy for the largest or smallest fish of the day. Ages 16 and older cannot assist with catching a fish, setting the hook and/or retrieving the fish per DWR regulations. Youth only stocked trout program runs April 1st to June 15th. Coffee Trails Hiking Series
Baby it’s cold outside. Let’s stay warm as we take a mid-hike break to brew a fresh cup.
During this 4-week hiking series, we’ll brew up fresh ground, trailside coffee and learn about a different blend each week. The Whole Bean Coffeehouse in Rocky Mount is providing us with quality Red Rooster beans and will discuss source, origin, characteristics and notes. All hikes include a free cup of coffee or tea (tea drinkers are welcome too). Thank you, Whole Bean Coffeehouse!
