Often described as meditation in motion, tai chi promotes serenity through gentle, flowing movements.

WHEN: Mondays, January 22 - March 18, 2024 WHERE: Essig Recreation Center AGES: 18 & up TIME: 8:30 am - 9:30 am COST: $55.00 Each class starts with a series of long-held, passive floor poses that mainly work the lower body — hips, pelvis, inner thighs, lower spine — which are especially rich in connective tissues. The poses are held for up to five minutes, sometimes longer. Bring a yoga mat and wear comfortable clothing.

All experience levels are welcome. Students are encouraged to bring a mat and block. SOUP FOR SENIORS

Can you help us collect canned soups, peanut butter, crackers and fruit during the month of January? You can make a difference in our community by starting a soup drive at your church, business or organization or donating a few cans of your own. Please deliver items to the Essig Recreation Center the week of February 5th - 9th. We are located at 295 Technology Drive in Rocky Mount, VA. All items collected will be bagged into reusable cloth bags and distributed to the elderly in Franklin County. The more we collect the more we can serve. UNDERSTANDING ALZHEIMER‘S & DEMENTIA

It’s a progressive and fatal brain disease and is the most common form of dementia. This class is for anyone who would like to know more about how Alzheimer’s affects the brain, detection, causes and risk factors, stages of the disease, treatment and much more. YOUTH ATHLETICS SPRING SOFTBALL

Girls Softball leagues will play in the RAYSA (Roanoke Area Youth Softball Association) League. Teams are formed in Franklin County. Practices are held in Franklin County. Games will be played in Franklin County and the Roanoke Valley. Face masks are required for infielders and batting helmets with face masks are required for all leagues. All players should have their own glove, batting helmet, bat and face mask.

YOUTH ATHLETICS SPRING SOCCER

AGES: 4-18 COST: $15.00

Registration Deadline: Friday, March 1, 2024 Soccer teams are formed based on age and school district. Once registration is complete, participants are assigned teams. Coaches will have a meeting mid-March to select practice time, receive rosters/equipment and pre-season information. Requests for practice days or teams cannot be considered.

Teams will begin practice late March and games will begin in April. The game schedule will be approximately 8 weeks and finishing around the beginning of June (weather pending). Soccer games are played at Rec. Park and Waid Park. Late registrations will be accepted March 2-15 with an additional $15 late fee. Participants must be 4 years old as of the May 1, no exceptions.

GIRLS LACROSSE

AGES: 6-14 COST: $15.00 SEASON: March - May

Age as of September 1, 2024

Registration Deadline: Friday, March 1, 2024 Participants will need a mouth piece, goggles and a lacrosse stick. Lacrosse will practice twice a week at Waid Park. Games will be played at Waid Park and surrounding counties. Practice begins in early March. There will be teams in the following age groups: U8 U10 U12 U14

YOUTH ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Franklin County Parks and Recreation offers discounts to participate in youth team sports to those who qualify.

Participants that receive SNAP benefits qualify to receive a 50% reduction in the participation fee, reducing the cost to $7 for a season versus $15.

To receive this discount, bring a statement of benefits from the FC Social Services Department, along with a photo ID to the Parks and Recreation office to register the participant.

Registration Deadline: Friday, March 1, 2024 The Franklin County Lacrosse Club Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to organizing, developing and promoting the sport of lacrosse in Franklin County and surrounding areas. Equipment is available for rental. Equipment rentals require a deposit that is fully refundable after equipment is returned.

Equipment hand out will begin late February. Practices for 8U will be one evening once a week at Waid Park. Practices for all other leagues are two evenings once a week at Waid Park.

BUFFALO MOUNTAIN & FLOYD SODA FOUNTAIN

WHEN: Wednesday, March 20, 2024 TIME: 8:30 am - 2:00 pm COST: $20.00 It’s the second day of Spring and no better way to put a spring in your step than to summit Buffalo Mountain. Reward yourself after the moderate 2.1 mile hike with a post hike lunch from the Floyd Country Store and ice cream from the Floyd Soda Fountain. This relaxing adventure will take it slow enough to observe some of the 15 rare plants that make “The Buffalo” unlike any other place in the Commonwealth. And it goes without saying that the Floyd Country Store is a rare species in and of itself. We will finish things off with a quick stop at Red Rooster Coffee Shop where you can get a treat to go, or just take in the smells. The shuttle leaves the Essig Recreation Center at 8:30 am.
