A Look Back on My First Year
to finally come back together again in this way. I felt blessed to have this opportunity to get to know so many Bigs and Littles. I heard so many inspiring stories about the positive impacts Bigs are having in Littles’ lives.
This has been a year for the BBBSPS history books. While still recovering from the widespread effects of the pandemic on our organization, BBBSPS has experienced unprecedented generosity and increased community engagement. The entire organization has gone through a period of deep learning, assessment, and process improvement. With your support, we’ve set records in multiple areas, strengthened match relatioships, and created an environment primed for success.
In August, over 400 program participants came together for the largest Annual BBBS Family Picnic in our history – and the first since 2019. Participants were excited to come together and connect with other matches and families. Recent matches enjoyed their first picnic, and long-term matches were glad
One story that stood out to me was about a young boy who joined the program after his father passed away. His mother shared that this young boy had been despondent and disengaged from life. She knew he needed a Big Brother he could look to for guidance and support. As we spoke, I watched this happy, excited young boy running around, laughing, and playing games. I was stunned that this was the same child she talked about. The positive impact his Big Brother had on this boy’s life is amazing, and it’s just one example of the incredible power of mentorship. 997 matches experienced that power this year, with 89 of these matches celebrating being matched for 5 or more years. That’s over 1800 people whose lives have been changed forever because of your support.
We also began the planning for our pilot program with Amazon called Bigs In Tech, an effort to help Seattle youth access experiences related to the tech field.
This year, we were incredibly honored to receive the largest single gift from an individual in the organization’s history: $1.2 million from MacKenzie Scott. And then another wonderful surprise when Big Brother Mike King selected us as his charity of choice for a $100,000 gift as the winner of Ten-X’s “Battle of the Bids” competition. Taken separately, each of these gifts are historic. Together, they are enabling the kind of transformation that will be felt for years to come. You’ll see some of the details of this outlined later in this report.
So many elements came together to make the 2021-2022 fiscal year historic, and the biggest element of all is you and all of the wonderful people like you in our community. The records set and the processes improved, the Bigs and Littles matched, and the gifts given; each of these things happened because of your support. Thank you for your commitment to youth, to mentors, and to our community.

The Impact of Your Support from 2021—2022
This year, supporters like you have partnered with us to lead initiatives in strategic planning, evaluate areas for process improvements, and create a launch pad for future success. Your engagement and giving in this 2021-2022 fiscal year have equipped and prepared us to make powerful changes that will make your support go even farther.
While all of this has been happening, we’ve continued to focus on the core of our work; building strong relationships that stand the test of time. The evidence shows that we are succeeding. This year, we achieved an average match length of 26 months, which is just over 2 years. This is the longest average match length we’ve had in 5 years. As Alonda shared, 89 matches celebrated being matched for over 5 years! The length of these matches is a testament to the quality of ongoing support our staff provides and the power of connection at the core of our mission.
That power, along with your support, continues to create positive outcomes for youth in the areas of emotional well-being, trust, and belonging. These outcomes are more critical than ever as the national psyche continues to heal from the devastating effects of the pandemic. This year, 79% of youth in our programs experienced improvement or maintenance of depressive symptoms, and 89% improved or maintained their ability to regulate their emotions.
Your support has also helped begin the rebuilding of career focused site-based programming for teens that was decimated by the pandemic. In September of 2021, yet another COVID wave was rippling through our community and heavily impacting our ability to deliver the in-person programming that youth and mentors wanted. After nearly 2 years of virtual engagement, Bigs and Littles were ready for in person interaction.
Thankfully, by early 2022 things had improved and we began to connect Bigs and Littles in person again. We also began to plan for new site-based programs like Bigs In Tech at Amazon and Bigs at the Zoo, which launched in our 2022-23 fiscal year.
Site-based programs make mentorship even more accessible for youth and mentors, so rebuilding them is a high priority for our organization. Your support is making that possible.
Everything we’ve done this year is possible because of you and your support. Every life made brighter, every bit of potential ignited – it happened because you care about young people and our community.

Our results show that 1-to-1 mentoring is a viable solution for improving outcomes for young people, particularly in the areas of mental health and scholastic achievement. Youth mental health concerns have reached unprecedented crisis levels – but young people in our programs show strong outcomes.
Community Based
This program connects youth and mentors in 1-to-1 mentoring relationships. Parents/guardians, youth, and mentors communicate directly to plan outings, set up Zoom calls, and keep in touch throughout the year. In this program, youth and mentors’ connections happen all throughout our community – in favorite parks, stadiums, community centers, and more.
Site Based
Our site-based programs connect youth and mentors in oneto-one and group mentoring environments at corporate offices and schools throughout the Puget Sound.
This year, we partnered with Tacoma and Seattle Public Schools for site-based programs at McCarver & Delong Elementaries, as well as West Seattle and Interlake High Schools. We also partnered with Why Not You Academy in Des Moines for site-based programming.
Group Mentoring
ALPHA FORUM – Co-hosted by the distinguished members of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity of Tacoma, this speaker series is for young men aged 10-15 who identify as Black or African American. Each monthly session provides a safe place for youth to speak about what’s on their minds and explore ideas with Black fraternity leaders. We tackle current events, individual legal rights, school success, and career pathways.
ANTI-VIOLENCE AND PREVENTION
– With the support of the City of Tacoma, we’ve launched a body of work that supports violence prevention with a goal to reduce recidivism in incarcerated youth. Through this initiative in partnership with youth detention center Remann Hall, young men connect via a group mentoring model with a mentor who shares their experience of incarceration. Shared lived experience helps the mentor connect with these youth as he leads them through conversations about personal power and responsibility.
Youth participants in this program report that if they had been familiar with the themes and ideas in these sessions before their incarceration, they would never have committed their crimes.
Special Programs
PATHWAYS – This program extends match support to help youth 18-22 with career and postsecondary education exploration through workshops designed to help them explore potential career paths.
BIGS IN TECH – Bigs in Tech
is a pilot program that matches young people in grades 6-8 with mentors from Amazon, with a focus on social-emotional learning and building STEAM skills. This program is a partnership between Amazon, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and local schools that utilizes a cohort model, beginning with the 6th grade population at each school and then adding subsequent 6th graders each year.
NEIGHBORHOOD NATURALIST
This was a pilot program in partnership with the Woodland Park Zoo. The program was geared toward helping youth with limited access to the Zoo learn about conservation and build conservation identity. Funded through the Institute of Museum and Library Services, this program connected youth ages 9-15 and their mentors with activities at the Zoo and online.

Anyone Can Be a Big
Bigs are people just like you who live and work throughout the Puget Sound region. They are your friends and neighbors, and they are out in the community being mentors. They’re going to the basketball court, hiking the trails, seeing the sights, and connecting with their Littles online.
Bigs are regular people who make the commitment to share new experiences with youth – creating life-long memories as they grow and learn together. Youth are learning from their mentors and mentors are learning too. Ask any Big and they’ll tell you they grow right along with their Little. They’ll share memories of building friendships, of giving advice, of taking advice, and how they’ve learned skills to carry with them in other areas of life.

Any Youth Can Benefit
We proudly serve a broad range of young people throughout the Puget Sound region – in Pierce, Kitsap and King Counties. Many of these youth are referred to us by parents, school counselors and other service providers and are disproportionately impacted by systemic injustice and oppression.
Youth in our programs are brilliant and resilient. They are half of the mentorship whole. Youth show mentors what adults tend to forget – how to play, to enjoy the small things, and find wonder in everything life has to offer.

*MacKenzie Scott Gift
This year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound received $1.9M from MacKenzie Scott to help transform and expand youth mentorship in the Puget Sound region.
The gift supports us in furthering our mission to ensure young people have access to powerful mentoring experiences that improve mental health, empower them with a plan for their future, and build a more equitable, compassionate community.
Today, more than ever, young people are in need of critical emotional and social support to help them cope with the ongoing effects of social isolation and ongoing concerns from the last several years. Nationwide, nearly 11 million kids live in poverty and more than 13 million young people experience emotional, behavioral, or developmental conditions.
This unprecedented investment is the largest donation from a single individual in our organization’s history and serves as a powerful message that investing in mentorship strengthens communities and society as a whole.
This gift is a part of Ms. Scott’s historic gift of $122.6 Million dollars to Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. The gift will support the national office and 38 local Big Brothers Big Sisters affiliates around the country further mentoring, equity and leadership across the network.
“Ms. Scott’s gift is a testament to the important role mentoring plays in the lives of young people and is an endorsement of the commitment of our staff, volunteers, and donors. Young people and mentors take their experiences of mentorship into our communities with them every day for the rest of their lives. This gift is so powerful because its effects will ripple out to impact our community in positive ways for years to come. “ (Alonda
Williams, President & CEO, BBBSPS)
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound believes no one person, organization, or gift alone can drive the significant impact mentorship can have on a young person’s life. It takes a village of mentors, volunteers, staff, families, and donors to positively impact young people’s lives.
This investment in Big Brothers Bigs Sisters of Puget Sound and our community is an invitation for more people and partners to join in transforming mentorship for young people today and for generations to come.
**Bigs in Tech
This year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound and Amazon began preparing for a 3-year workplace mentoring program pilot designed to help young people learn about
IMPACT PARTNERS IMPACT PARTNERS
careers in technology, reinforce social emotional skills and build solid 1 on 1 relationships with caring adult Amazon volunteers. That program is called Bigs In Tech.
Why Bigs In Tech? Today, young people hear often that technology careers are the future, and dream of opportunities to learn about and engage in our region’s biggest industry. Many youth lack structured access to experiences that allow them to see and explore the wide variety of roles available in tech. These youth have limited non-classroom experiences in the hard sciences, with access mainly to what is provided directly by their schools. In the age of COVID and virtual learning, experiences that would usually spark youth interest such as field trips and career panels have been nearly non-existent. Bigs In Tech bridges that gap for youth by creating structured mentoring relationships focused on creating experiences related to STEM.
BBBSPS and Amazon are excited to partner on this program and bridge these gaps for youth. The two organizations worked closely to create a pilot and program model that will enable strong relationship growth and support for matches, as well as meaningful volunteer engagement. Amazon’s $870k grant will support the program for three years, with a planned shift in primary funding source over time as you can see on page 18.
