WE FOSTER COMMUNITY THROUGH RELATIONSHIP BUILDING.

Every kid graduates with a plan for their future and a mentor whose impact lasts a lifetime.

VISION MISSION

To create & support 1-to-1 mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.

JEDI STATEMENT

At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound, we are unwavering in our commitment to justice, equity, diversity, inclusion (JEDI) and these principles are integral to our values and mission. We firmly believe that every person should have the opportunity to reach their full potential and we are committed to upholding JEDI principles in all aspects of our organization. We are dedicated to taking concrete actions to uphold these values both internally and externally, with a particular focus on empowering BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color), LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual, plus) individuals and other marginalized communities. Through these actions, both internally and externally, we create a transformative environment where every person can thrive, be heard, and truly belong.

OUR VALUES

We are trusted and transparent. We foster community through relationship building. We are committed to inclusivity and belonging (JEDI). We treat all with respect and dignity. We rise to meet the needs of youth.

DEAR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS,

As we reflect on the past year, I am thrilled to share with you the incredible strides we’ve made together at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound. Your unwavering support has been instrumental in achieving our mission of igniting the potential within every child in our community.

I am particularly proud to highlight three key achievements that have significantly impacted our organization and the children we serve. First, through the generous funding of Big Brother Mike King’s competition winnings, we were able to launch twice-monthly Match Activities. These engaging events provide our matches with opportunities to bond, learn, and create lasting memories together. The impact of these activities on the relationships between our Bigs and Littles has been nothing short of transformative.

Secondly, our successful pilot year of the Bigs in Tech mentoring program in partnership with Amazon has exceeded all expectations. This innovative initiative has opened doors for our youth to explore careers in technology and gain invaluable mentorship from industry professionals. The positive feedback from both mentors and mentees reaffirms the importance of connecting our youth with mentors who can inspire and guide them towards bright futures.

Lastly, I am thrilled to announce that Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound has been honored with the prestigious Agency Growth Award from Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. This recognition is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our staff, volunteers, and supporters who have worked tirelessly to expand our reach and impact in the Puget Sound region. It is truly a reflection of our collective commitment to empowering youth and strengthening communities.

None of these achievements would have been possible without the generosity and commitment of individuals like you. Your belief in our mission fuels our efforts every day, and we are immensely grateful for your continued support.

As we look to the future, I am filled with optimism and excitement for the opportunities that lie ahead. Together, we will continue to ignite the potential within every child, one mentoring relationship at a time.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound (BBBSPS) is the leading mentoring organization in Washington State, with over 60 years of experience in serving youth and mentors. Our nonprofit organization is dedicated to fostering positive, enduring relationships between adult volunteers (Bigs) and youth (Littles) in King, Pierce, and Kitsap counties.

Established to ignite the inherent potential in every child, BBBSPS focuses on providing life-changing mentorship experiences that empower young people to achieve their full potential.

OUR PROGRAMS

BBBSPS offers several mentoring programs tailored to meet the diverse needs of the youth in our community. These include:

Community-Based Mentoring

In this traditional program, Bigs and Littles meet regularly to share experiences, explore interests, and develop a lasting bond. Activities might include anything from going to a museum or playing sports to simply enjoying a conversation over ice cream.

Site-Based Mentoring

This program connects Bigs and Littles in a structured environment, such as schools or workplace partners’ offices. Sessions are typically held weekly or monthly and focus on academic support, social-emotional skillbuilding activities, and fostering a positive, encouraging relationship.

Group Mentoring

Group mentoring involves one Big working with a small group of Littles, providing a unique dynamic that encourages peer support and collaboration. These programs often include activities like team sports, workshops, and group outings.

OUR IMPACT

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound has a profound impact on the lives of the children we serve. Research shows that Littles in our programs are more likely to:

• Improve in academic performance and school attendance.

• Develop higher self-esteem and confidence.

• Form better relationships with peers and family members.

• Avoid risky behaviors and show improved mental health outcomes.

OUR COMMITMENT

At BBBSPS, we are committed to creating a supportive, inclusive, and nurturing environment for all participants. We take great care in matching Bigs and Littles based on shared interests, personalities, and goals to ensure a strong, meaningful connection. Additionally, our professional staff provides ongoing support and training to ensure the success and safety of each match.

JOIN US

Whether as a mentor, donor, volunteer, or advocate, there are many ways to get involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound. Together, we can make a lasting difference in the lives of young people, supporting them in realizing their full potential and achieving their dreams.

ANYONE CAN BE A BIG

Our mentors, known as Bigs, are the heart and soul of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound. These dedicated individuals come from various walks of life, united by their commitment to making a difference in the lives of young people. Bigs are caring, compassionate, and patient, always ready to offer a listening ear and a guiding hand. They volunteer their time to build meaningful relationships with their Littles, offering support, encouragement, and friendship. Whether they are helping with homework, exploring new hobbies, or simply sharing a conversation, Bigs provide invaluable guidance and inspiration.

Bigs are mentors who help Littles see their own potential. Bigs are safe, consistent adults in young people’s lives who are outside of the family unit. They come from diverse backgrounds, bringing unique perspectives and experiences that enrich the mentoring relationship. Despite their busy lives, they prioritize their commitment to their Littles, often forming bonds that last well beyond the program. The impact of a Big extends far beyond the immediate support they provide—by fostering confidence and resilience they help shape the leaders and changemakers of tomorrow. Through their unwavering dedication, Bigs transform lives and strengthen our community.

BIGS IN TECH AT AMAZON: Empowering Youth Through Mentorship

The Bigs in Tech at Amazon program, a partnership between Amazon and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound, aims to ignite the potential of middle school students through one-toone mentorship with Amazon employees. Launched during the 2022-2023 school year, this program emphasizes the importance of STEM/STEAM activities and social-emotional learning (SEL) to help youth from underserved communities develop critical skills and build meaningful relationships.

Program Overview

Bigs in Tech at Amazon connects Amazon employee mentors (Bigs) with middle school students (Littles) through a combination of virtual and in-person meetups. Each mentor commits to approximately 24-26 hours annually, engaging in structured activities designed to foster educational growth and personal development. These activities include monthly virtual meetups, quarterly in-person sessions, and various interactive projects centered on STEM and SEL themes. Impact on Youth and Community

The impact of the Bigs in Tech program on the youth and community has been profound.

During the 2022-2023 school year, 52 Amazon employees mentored students from McClure Middle School and Orca K-8 School, contributing over 944 hours of their time. Activities such as building paper rockets, creating “I Am” posters, and discussing topics like growth mindset and self-care have not only enhanced students’ academic skills but also boosted their confidence and resilience.

Feedback from students and mentors has been overwhelmingly positive. Students expressed excitement about participating in STEM activities and appreciated the opportunity to connect with mentors who share similar interests and backgrounds. Mentors reported feeling more connected to their community and more fulfilled in their work, with 95% stating that being a Big enriched their workplace experience.

Progress & Growth

The program has made significant strides toward its goals. In its first year, the program engaged 52 students, with plans to expand to Broadview-Thomson K-8 School in the following year. By the second year, the program had grown to include 126 matched mentors, with another 12 in the pipeline.

Curriculum development has also advanced, with finalized workbooks for 6th and 7th graders that include spaces for both mentors and students to engage in activities. This improvement, based on feedback from the first year, has made the sessions more interactive and effective.

Looking Ahead

As the Bigs in Tech at Amazon program enters its third year, the focus remains on scaling up to serve more students while continually refining the curriculum to better meet their needs. The ongoing support and enthusiasm of Amazon staff and mentors, alond with the collaborative efforts of participating schools ensure that this program will continue to make a meaningful impact on the lives of young people and the broader community.

In summary, Bigs in Tech at Amazon exemplifies the power of mentorship and corporatecommunity partnerships in fostering youth development and community engagement. We are grateful for Amazon’s continued commitment to this program and look forward to expanding its reach and impact in the years to come.
