Message from the Head of School

The winter term brings forth a wealth of opportunities for our students to continue their journey of curiosity, creativity, joy, love of learning, growth and development. From the Arts to Athletics, the outstanding Preschool programme to Advanced Placement in the Upper School, day trips and spirit events, the abundance of after school clubs and competitions, every experience will continue to shape your child’s development throughout their years at Bayview Glen and most importantly, this journey will always involve the support and care of our outstanding and talented educators.

I recently returned from the Round Square Heads Summit Conference in London, U.K., where over 100 Heads of School from around the world attended. It was such a rewarding and humbling experience to collaborate, network, learn and engage with global education leaders and colleagues. One of the major presenters was Priya Lakhani, CEO of Century Tech AI. What was remarkable to see were both the common connections and the challenges faced by all our schools around the world with how quickly artificial intelligence has permeated the walls of our schools, the workplace and society. As educators, it is vital to not only prepare our students for their next journey at the post-secondary level but to also provide them with the necessary

knowledge and skills to navigate, adapt and engage responsibly towards an unknown future impacted by the accelerated pace of technology. It is vital for schools to provide a quality education today in order to prepare our students for the world they will inherit tomorrow. As a member of Round Square, this partnership provides opportunities for students to travel abroad and attend international, student-led conferences where they have an opportunity to learn, engage, collaborate, network and better understand the six ideals of this association: Internationalism, Adventure, Democracy, Leadership, Environmentalism, Service. In the words of Dr. Mantie, our Director of Global Education and Strategic Partnerships, “These experiences allow our students to build relationships that help them see the world through others’ perspectives, profoundly shaping their thinking as they navigate an interconnected global landscape.”

Whether it’s participation in the Round Square Student Conferences or in the wealth of co-curricular programmes provided by the school, these opportunities are one of many ways that align with our commitment to a balanced education and school MissionWhole Child, Purpose Life, Better World.

Message from the Board of Directors

As the world continues to evolve, so do we This month, I am inspired by our Upper School students who took their learning abroad as they explored Columbia, Greece, and Spain! Travel is more than just a change of scenery; it is a personal journey that fosters growth, creativity, and learning

Whether you are traversing a rainforest or exploring a small town, travel gives us the opportunity to step outside of our routines Through these experiences, we engage in culture and develop a broader perspective on the world, stimulating our creativity along the way .

When individuals experience different cultures, languages, and landscapes, their minds are opened to fresh perspectives and new ideas Arts, architecture, and food can all spark imagination and encourage original thought Through sensory engagement, we generate fresh ideas and fuel moments of inspiration

Beyond its role in creativity, travel is one of the most effective ways to learn Unlike traditional classroom settings, travel engages all the senses, making learning more dynamic and memorable History and geography come alive when experienced firsthand . One travel moment that stands out for me took place on a family trip to the ruins of Pompeii My youngest child, eight-yearsold at the time, was learning about Pompeii at school and, on that trip, became our personal tour guide He excitedly pointed to details in the House of the Vettii and had us running to the Teatro Grande, ending the day with a desire to learn even more

Travel also enhances problem-solving skills As we delve into unfamiliar environments, our need to navigate new places, overcome language barriers and unexpected

detours, often requires creative thinking and tests our resourcefulness This was masterfully showcased on the show, The Amazing Race Canada, where contestants raced across the country, facing tasks which tested their ability to strategize while remaining calm under pressure The act of being out of your comfort zone fosters resilience and growth

Our Upper School students are fortunate as they have the unique privilege of participating in overnight learning experiences and Round Square conferences across the world Through these trips, they expand their perspectives beyond our school and city, developing the empathy, curiosity, and confidence to become the leaders of tomorrow

In a world of constant change, innovation is key, and travel remains one of the most powerful tools for nurturing our creativity and love for learning Every journey presents an opportunity to grow, to be inspired, and to embrace new ideas — because the world itself is a boundless source of knowledge and imagination waiting to be discovered

Insights from INCITE Authors

INCITE Writing Competition

This year’s INCITE Writing Competition, hosted biannually by the Conference of Independent Schools Teachers of English, once again provided Prep and Upper School students from independent schools across Ontario with the opportunity to showcase their creativity and exceptional writing talents

We are thrilled to announce that the Prep School had a record-breaking 11 students participating in this year’s competition — the highest number in our school’s history!

Even more exciting, we are celebrating a historic moment: two of our Prep School students have earned top honours by placing first and second in their division Their remarkable pieces will be proudly featured on the CIS Ontario website, quarterly newsletter, and social media platforms

Congratulations to Jacqueline and Liliana, our talented writers, for this outstanding achievement! Please see the next page for their insights into the joys of writing .

Sincerely,

Words from Our Writers

Our names are Liliana and Jacqueline, and we are both Grade 8 students Last term, we were given the opportunity to participate in the CIS INCITE Writing Competition and are proud to announce that we are both finalists! This year’s theme was “Taking a Risk”, and we both took different avenues in our stories, creating our own escapes from reality This year’s theme was broad and allowed us to explore unique perspectives and ideas, pushing us to step outside our comfort zones and take creative risks with our writing We are honoured to have placed in this competition and are proud to be making a positive impact in the Prep School through our passion for writing

I am Liliana and I believe that writing is one of the most powerful ways to express ourselves It allows us to share our emotions, perspectives, and ideas in countless forms In my opinion, words are what shape our reality and inspire change One speech that has really inspired me is “The Power of Words” by Mohammed Qahtani, Toastmasters World Champion of Public Speaking (2015) The idea that words can truly inspire and connect with people motivates me to keep writing and sharing my thoughts What I love most about writing is that you don’t have to be a master of English to put your ideas on paper As I stated in my Gender Equality speech last year, everyone has a voice, and it deserves to be heard I am grateful that I had the opportunity to participate in this competition and that my work was recognized Experiences like the INCITE Writing Competition and the Sterling Hall Public Speaking Competition have shown me the value of being bold and taking the first step to sharing my voice I encourage all Prep School students to take part in opportunities like these and discover the strength of their own voices and the impact they have on the world around them .

I am Jackie and I find that words can be our greatest strength They can be our escape and a way to ground us When inspiration for a good story arises, it means that you believe in it, and this passion is what gets readers hooked, because your emotions come across the page I was very lucky to have had the opportunity to participate in the INCITE Writing Competition and put my story on paper, and I highly recommend more Prep students to participate! If you ever have a good story, this is the best way to test its mettle I would also like to thank Ms Iafrate, since I wouldn’t have been able to do it without her, and she has supported me throughout the whole process Sometimes, believing in your story can be easier than believing in yourself Edmund Hillary, a mountaineer from New Zealand, once said, “It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves . ” His quote has stuck with me, since it applies to almost everything Most times what we perceive as impossible is rather just an obstacle

The End or is it?

Liliana

Prep News: Ladders, and Star Wars, and Penguins – Oh My!

At the Prep School, news isn’t about weather updates, stock market results, and current events It’s a creative, informative, and usually unusual approach to looking at school life And this is all thanks to the dynamic Prep News Crew This student-led team brings assemblies to life with regular segments, memorable characters, and giggle-filled moments that turn everyday school life into something unique

Who are the brains behind the episodes? So glad you asked The Prep News Lead Team consists of Shaan and Bennett, who host the show, and Vihaan and Evan, sometimes known as Peter and Perry Penguin Together, along with Mr Vivian, they lead a club of more than a dozen Prepsters to create a fresh look at student life . Prep News is more than just a fun club; it’s a creative outlet where student perspectives shine

Where else can you learn about Friggatriskaidekaphobia, “the fear of Friday the 13th”? To explain its meaning, and to have some fun during Assembly, Prep News had Professor Paranoid (played by Mr Moore) rush on screen to explain the word, only to be chased around by a “fearful” crew of bunnies, ducks, and otherwise inexplicable characters

Aside from this, there are many segments that keep the Prep laughing, such as:

• After school chair races, where students zoom through empty corridors in epic battles of speed and agility .

• The French Expression of the Week, an ongoing feature that somehow always ends with a warning to Bennett to watch out for ladders .

• Ghost Protocol for Halloween, with our entire cast hiding under sheets

• Holiday Cheer, a heartwarming and hilarious interview with Crasher and Downer, two back-up reindeer

Stay tuned because Prep News has plenty of ideas on the horizon . The team is set to continue delivering its signature mix of laughter, creativity, and a big helping of bizarre, including a segment starring a group of Prep Superheroes who don’t fight crime but solve pressing “student problems ” Their first mission? Figuring out how to retrieve a calculator stuck at the top of a shelf

That’s all for this segment Prep News is signing off!

Bayview Glen Playground PALS: Inspiring Leadership Through Play

Bayview Glen Playground PALS

This past term, Grade 4 and 5 students at Bayview Glen have embraced exciting leadership roles as part of the Gryphon Playground PALS initiative Under the guidance of Leah Kanary, Dean of Student Life for the Preschool and Lower School, and Kayley Core, Assistant Camp Director, these students are developing leadership skills through teamwork, facilitation training, and hands-on problem-solving This programme provides invaluable opportunities to cultivate life skills that extend far beyond the playground .

The Gryphon Playground PALS programme reflects the school’s strategic plan, specifically aligning with Pillar #3: Nurturing Belonging and Wellbeing This pillar emphasizes ensuring that every member of our diverse community feels respected, valued, and understood Gryphon Playground PALS empowers students to create inclusive spaces where everyone can enjoy engaging and meaningful play

At the programme’s core is the student generated Gryphon Playground PALS mission statement, which exemplifies Bayview Glen’s values of curiosity, courage, and compassion:

Compassion: By fostering kindness, fairness, and equity, ensuring every student feels valued and included

Curiosity: By exploring new and creative ways to lead games, encouraging collaboration, and asking thoughtful questions

Courage: By standing up for fairness, resolving conflicts with respect, and confidently taking on leadership roles

Through their efforts, these young leaders enhance not only the playground experience but also the sense of belonging and connection across our school community . The Gryphon Playground PALS programme also strengthens the bond between Bayview Glen School and Bayview Glen Camp, creating an even stronger culture of collaboration and shared values

This initiative exemplifies Bayview Glen’s dedication to nurturing leaders who are compassionate, confident, and capable of making a positive impact within the school and beyond With the Gryphon Playground PALS leading the way, our Lower School playground is truly becoming a place of greater inclusion, joy, and discovery

Reflections on Being a Gryphon Playground PAL

This year, Bayview Glen introduced the Gryphon Playground PALS programme, a leadership initiative for students in Grades 4 and 5 to create more inclusive playground spaces Guided by Ms Kanary, our Dean of Student Life, we work to ensure everyone feels welcomed and included during playtime

“I initially joined the Gryphon Playground PALS because I thought it would be fun,” reflected Salima “However, as I spent more time as a PAL, I realized how many students were being excluded from games This opened my eyes to the importance of our mission Seeing students feel positive and included while participating in games we led has been truly rewarding Knowing that our efforts can spread kindness and create a happier atmosphere on the playground makes me proud to be a part of this programme I hope future students get to experience the same joy of making a difference as a Gryphon Playground PAL ”

“One of my favourite parts of being a PAL has been teaching new games and interacting with younger students I might not have otherwise gotten to know,” said Adam “It’s exciting to introduce games to kids who may have never played them before and watch them learn, play, and have fun Most students follow the rules, making it an enjoyable experience for everyone I’ve also really enjoyed bonding with my fellow PALS and working together to make the playground a better space for everyone ”

Overall, being a Gryphon Playground PAL has been an incredible experience As Salima reflected, “It has taught me the value of inclusion, positivity, and leadership ” Adam added, “As we continue through this term and the rest of the year, I’m excited to keep making a difference on the playground and beyond ”

Salima and Adam Grade 5 Students

Gryphon Playground PALS

As Gryphon PALS, we are dedicated to creating an impact on our playgrounds and keeping a safe, welcoming and social environment where every student feels included and valued, and new friendships are made Following our core values of compassion, curiosity, and courage, we will:

• Show Compassion by being kind, listening to others, demonstrating fairness, selfregulation, equity and helping everyone feel they belong

• Embrace Curiosity by exploring new ways to play, asking questions, considering other’s ideas and collaboration encouraging creativity, and inspiring others to try new activities

• Demonstrate Courage by standing up for fairness, solving conflicts respectfully, and leading with confidence

Supporting Student Wellbeing: The Impact of Domestic Violence on Children

Every child deserves to live in an environment that is safe and nurturing; yet many of them are exposed to different forms of violence at home, which can have a profound and lasting impact on them Domestic violence includes physical, emotional, financial, psychological, and mental abuse The impact of abuse is dependent on many factors including a child’s resilience, their age and stage of development, length of exposure, and the severity of the abuse When a child’s home environment is a source of fear and not safety, the results are damaging to their development It is important to understand the effects of domestic violence on children and the impact on their learning

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are key events that happen in a child’s life before they turn age 18 that cause mental or physical harm to them Children witnessing domestic violence between a parent of other family members is one of those consequential ACEs

Domestic violence causes emotional and psychological trauma Children living in homes where there is violence are usually on edge, struggling with anxiety and fear about when the next episode will erupt It is not uncommon for children who are witnesses to abuse to suffer from depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Teachers may notice affected students have mood swings, seemingly distracted, or sleeping in class Students who are trying to cope with abuse at home are not fully prepared or ready to learn

Since children’s brains are still developing, when they are chronically exposed to the trauma of domestic violence, they are impacted negatively, leading to physical

impairment of the brain (hippocampus, amygdala, and pre-frontal cortex) This affects memory, learning, and emotional regulation Children with difficulty managing their emotions may be irritable and exhibit aggressive and explosive behaviour

Children exposed to abuse often experience cognitive and academic difficulties The exposure to ongoing stress from abuse impacts memory and concentration Children are unable to completely focus on schoolwork when they are worried about conflict at home or between parents/ caregivers Unsurprisingly, this results in a drastic downward shift in school performance, including academic, school involvement, and social skills Furthermore, teens who witness abuse may act negatively, engage in school avoidance such as skipping classes/school or repeatedly being late for school/class Others may engage in risky behaviours involving sex, smoking/vaping, drugs and alcohol Reportedly, boys may show aggression towards other family members, start conflicts, or engage in bullying at school, while girls are likely to show signs of depression

Some children who are witnessing all forms of domestic violence internalized feelings of guilt and blame themselves Many feel alone and struggle with sadness, anger, and self-harm, including suicidality, due to feelings of powerlessness from failure to stop the violence or get peace (It is never the child’s fault for adult’s problems!) Constant threats to withdraw financial support such as paying for tuition or withdrawing enrolment contribute to heightened anxiety Exposure to domestic violence causes children to lose their sense of security and can lead to insecure attachment and relationship issues

Another effect of domestic violence on children is the emergence of physical problems, manifesting themselves in repeated nightmares, constant migraines/headaches, and stomach aches Research has shown that exposure to ongoing stress can have long-term health consequences

Furthermore, children who witness abuse are at higher risk for health problems as adults, such as mental health conditions, poor self-esteem, and increased risk of chronic diseases, including high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease

Unless there is professional intervention, children exposed to domestic violence are vulnerable to abuse in their own relationships, either becoming the abused or the abuser

Parents and caregivers are role models for children

They must be cognizant of the impact of their behaviour on children who emulate them Children exposed to domestic violence need trauma-informed care and strong social support It is never too late to get help With the appropriate support, children can develop resilience and recover from the effects of domestic violence

The Director of Student Wellbeing provides traumainformed emotional support and validation and makes appropriate referrals for students and their families

Single Gendered PHE

The need for quality physical and health education (PHE) is greater than ever At Bayview Glen, we are dedicated to developing a lifelong love of movement through inclusive and highly engaging programming For this school year, we modified our Upper School programming by transitioning activity and fitness classes into single-gender cohorts

While we value co-educational experience, we have found that in PHE programming, single-gender classes allow for a more student-centered experience

This shift has led to remarkable outcomes Firstly, and most importantly, our students are happy Additional benefits include fostering confidence, skill acquisition and a strong sense of community . By focussing on the unique dynamics of each group, the single-gender environment prioritizes support, student choice, motivation, and inspiration The energy in our classes is palpable, with both male and female students actively engaged as they move, laugh, and learn together

Dollars and Sense: A Student and Parent Perspective of Financial Literacy at the Lower School

Learning Through a Classroom Economy

A Parent’s Point of View

As a parent, I saw how engaged my daughter and her classmates were in the Financial Literacy curriculum They not only learned a healthy respect for money and where it comes from but also how to save and spend money Money is becoming more and more “mysterious” or intangible, and the Financial Literacy curriculum teaches children how to think about money more tangibly and start creating good habits In participating in this curriculum with their peers, the students learn about finances in a very practical way that is both fun and educational

I’ve seen my daughter be more curious about money She has a much better grasp on finances, budgeting and the value of money She asks more questions about how we allocate our funds in the household and it has started many fabulous discussions at home

Financial Literacy and the Classroom Economy are great additions to the Grade 5 curriculum I wish I could have learned this when I was at Grace’s age It’s a thoughtful and practical programme that prepares students for success in their personal and professional lives It’s another example of what makes Bayview Glen such a special and innovative educational home for our children .

Carrie Lynde Bayview Glen Parent

A highlight of Grade 5 has been learning about Financial Literacy It’s so fun! All the Grade 5 students began participating in the Classroom Economy starting in September Each student applied for a job around the classroom For example, I was assigned to be an accountant, and we use our income from these jobs to pay for different expenses at school such as rent for our desks and chairs We can get additional income for going above and beyond in schoolwork or volunteering but also can incur additional expenses

I have learned so much about money this year Before learning about financial literacy and experiencing it firsthand in our classroom, I thought it was fairly easy to earn and save money through your job This year, I discovered that it is actually much harder than you think For example, I make $800 BVG dollars per month as an accountant, but it costs $1,000 BVG dollars per month for my desk and chair There are so many expenses, and I work hard to make bonuses, otherwise I would go into debt I also save for events I couldn’t anticipate

I am attempting to be more financially savvy since the start of Classroom Economy I have been saving the money I earn at school but also attempting to earn additional income by trying my best and being helpful around school I am excited for our upcoming lessons on stocks, bonds and investing The most interesting part has been learning about finances with my friends and classmates It’s been something that we look forward to every day We enjoy that it’s for the entire year rather than just something we do for a day or a week We are all getting better at understanding income, expenses and budgeting

Leveraging the Power of Generative AI in the Prep Classroom

Generative AI has become an increasingly ubiquitous tool in many sectors, and its potential in education is particularly exciting At Bayview Glen, we are committed to integrating this emerging technology into our classrooms in meaningful ways to support teaching and learning Our goal is to empower students to become adept prompt engineers; by leveraging generative AI tools, we aim to enhance students’ ability to think critically, create innovative solutions, and approach problems from new perspectives This involves teaching them how to craft precise prompts and harness AI’s capabilities to elevate the quality of their work while maintaining academic integrity

Here are three notable examples of how our students have successfully incorporated generative AI into their learning this year:

Understanding User Needs Through AI: Grade 8 PBL Course

In their Grade 8 Project-Based Learning (PBL) course, students tackle real-world challenges by designing solutions tailored to specific user groups To deepen their understanding of their users, students create personas that embody the needs and experiences of their target audience

Victor, a Grade 8 student, and his group used ChatGPT to simulate a chatbot that acted as their user persona “This chatbot helped us gain insights into our user’s life, their struggles, and the solutions they might already be exploring,” he explained “Without AI, it would have been much harder to achieve this level of insight because meeting and interviewing someone in real life wasn’t feasible By interviewing the chatbot, we could simulate a real-world interaction ”

By simulating a real-world interaction, the chatbot allowed students to practice empathy and user-centered design, essential skills for tackling real-world challenges Beyond the PBL course, Victor used generative AI to brainstorm ideas for his Science Fair experiment, develop healthy snack concepts for a Health and Phys Ed . assignment, and even create practice questions to prepare for tests and assessments

Becoming Skilled Prompt Engineers: Grade 7 History Posters

Grade 7 History students recently analyzed immigration posters inspired by Clifford Sifton Instead of designing the posters manually, they researched specific immigrant groups and used ChatGPT to generate visuals based on their findings This activity not only enhanced their understanding of historical contexts but also honed their skills in crafting precise and effective AI prompts

“The great thing about AI is that if you know how to craft a question, it will give you exactly the answer you desire,” shared Ariana, a Grade 7 student She noted that refining her prompts for ChatGPT helped her develop paraphrasing skills, which improved both her research efficiency and her ability to communicate clearly “Because I’ve practiced forming better prompts,” Ariana said, “AI now gives me the answers I want more easily, making my work more efficient

Note: The images included in this article, apart from Ariana’s work, were generated by ChatGPT using the text from each corresponding section

Generative AI in the Prep Classroom (Continued)

Feedback and Refinement with AI: Grade 6 and Flint AI

In Grade 6, students have been exploring Flint AI to improve their schoolwork Shaye, a Grade 6 student, described how Flint AI helped her receive actionable feedback on her projects “It was so good to have an impartial judge by my side to help me improve my projects, homework, and even PowerPoints,” she said

Shaye also leveraged Flint AI outside the classroom for her First Lego League (FLL) Robotics team “Flint AI helped my team refine our Innovation Project by reviewing our work, highlighting our strengths, and offering clear suggestions for improvement It even helped us enhance our script for the competition, ensuring it included equity and equality, and it guided us in developing a marketing plan to present to the judges

Fostering Innovation and Responsibility

These examples highlight the growing impact of generative AI as a powerful tool in our classrooms, sparking creativity and encouraging critical thinking By guiding our students to use these technologies thoughtfully and efficiently, we are equipping them for a future in which they will be prepared to use AI effectively in their future studies and careers

Bayview Glen Global Education Updates

Global Education:

The Significance of Relationships and Building Global Competencies

In Global Education, we emphasize the importance of relationships—our relationship with ourselves, with one another, within communities, and with the earth . This focus extends across local, national, and international contexts, recognizing the interconnectedness of our actions and their impact Guided by the principles of pluralism, we strive to embody compassion, curiosity, and courage in fostering environments where individuals and communities feel safe, valued, and heard The ability to coexist is a critical skill for Bayview Glen students to develop as they grow into ethical problem solvers who care about the common good

Through various experiences, Bayview Glen students have opportunities to navigate relationships with individuals and communities while developing essential global competencies These competencies include the knowledge, values, attitudes, and skills necessary to think critically and engage meaningfully in a complex, interconnected world (PISA, 2008) We are already putting this vision into action through various clubs and committees that students can participate in, such as Model UN and DECA in the Upper School, Community Outreach and The Chapter in the Prep School, and the Green Team and Gryphon Playground Pals in the Lower School This vision is further realized through our Better Beginnings initiative, where students are developing critical skills to “take action for collective wellbeing and sustainable development” (PISA, 2008) By developing these competencies, Bayview Glen students enhance their ability to coexist with others, growing into ethical problem solvers who care about the common good

Global Learning Experience: Greece

This past December, 18 Upper School students travelled to Athens, Rafina, and Nafplio with Mr Church and Ms Moliotsias to explore the question: How do our criteria for living well relate to local culture and history? At the heart of their journey was a deeper inquiry: Is there a “better” way to live? Through guided discussions, personal reflection, and hands-on experiences, students considered how lessons from Greece’s past and present could inspire meaningful changes in their own lives and communities

While in Greece, students explored historic sites like Epidaurus and Nemea, reflecting on how ancient societies embedded wellness into their daily lives They ventured beyond iconic landmarks to experience modern Greek culture, meeting locals in smaller villages and rural areas Through these interactions, they learned how wellness is deeply connected to culture, community, and the environment From visiting family-run farms to exploring bustling Athens, students were immersed in diverse perspectives that developed their intercultural competencies and broadened their understanding of what it means to live well .

As a fun addition to the trip, students introduced a new Bayview Glen Global Education tradition — a travel mascot named Journey! Journey accompanied the group to historic landmarks, shared daily posts of his adventures with families back home, and provided a playful yet meaningful way to document their experiences We are excited to share Journey’s recent adventures in Greece and upcoming trips to Spain and France with the broader school community

Round Square Zoom Postcards

Bayview Glen students proudly continue the tradition of participating in international Round Square Zoom Postcards These sessions are a unique opportunity to connect with peers from over 100 students from around the globe . Hosted by student leaders from a Round Square member school, these virtual events are rooted in the Round Square IDEALS — Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership, and Service — and provide students with a platform to engage in meaningful dialogue and collaboration

Framed through “Internationalism,” St George’s College in Peru, hosted a Cultural Diversity Postcard Students from schools in India, England, New Zealand, Peru, Canada, and the United States (to name a few) gathered for a 90-minute, student-led session Each delegate shared a diversity-themed poster representing their home city, followed by small group discussions exploring prompts related to cultural diversity These conversations encouraged students to exchange perspectives and learn from one another about the richness and challenges of diversity in different cultural contexts

In addition to fostering cultural understanding, the Postcards also serve as a platform to develop student leadership One recent session brought together students involved in Round Square committees to discuss how they bring the IDEALS to life in their own schools They explored ways to increase student engagement, shared best practices, and reflected on challenges they face Bayview Glen students described this leadership-focussed session as one of the most impactful Round Square experiences they have attended, leaving them inspired and eager for more opportunities to collaborate with their global peers

Journey’s Adventures in Greece

Growing Together: Building Collaborative Practices and Lifelong Learning in Early Childhood Education

At Bayview Glen, we believe that learning is a shared journey enriched through collaboration and continuous reflection Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, we recognize that both educators and children thrive in environments that foster collective growth and professional inquiry

In alignment with our Reggio-Inspired pedagogy, we understand that nothing happens in isolation Our partnerships with organizations like the North American Reggio Emilia Alliance (NAREA), Seneca College’s Early Years program, and established schools such as The Bishop Strachan School create opportunities to deepen our understanding and practices These collaborations allow us to design dynamic learning spaces where curiosity, connection, and growth are highly valued

The Reggio Emilia approach emphasizes that learning is relational, built on meaningful connections among educators, children, and families Collaborative dialogue amoung educators encourages the exchange of ideas, reflective practice, and the co-construction of knowledge, fostering innovative teaching practices that honour children’s voices and evolving interests

As we inspire children to explore and question the world, we are equally committed to fostering lifelong learning among our educators Our partnership with NAREA connects us to global networks of professionals dedicated to child-centered learning Engaging in conferences,

courses, and workshops through NAREA validates our practices while inspiring innovation and growth Similarly, our collaboration with Seneca College enables us to mentor emerging educators and stay connected to the latest research and developments in early childhood education

Investing in professional growth enhances the learning experiences we offer and strengthens our relationships with families and the broader community . A culture of collaboration empowers educators to create environments where children feel seen, heard, and inspired to engage meaningfully with the world

At Bayview Glen, collaboration and ongoing professional development are at the core of our practice Through valued partnerships with NAREA, Seneca, and other schools and centres that have a well-established Reggio Approach woven into their pedagogical beliefs, we remain committed to growing as educators and nurturing confident, capable, and compassionate learners who are ready to contribute thoughtfully to a better world

Winter 2024-2025 at a Glance

Notes from a Comm Tech Teacher

When I first started teaching at the Upper School in 2013, we had just five students enrolled in a combined Grade 11 and 12 course Since then, the interest in technology — among students, parents, and the wider community — has expanded significantly Today, we offer eight full classes of Technology, with up to 24 students per class This includes three sections of a new Grade 10 Communication Technology credit introduced in 2019, and Mr . Conrad now teaches two sections of a Grade 10 Design Technology course, which was introduced in 2024 Design Technology provides a chance for students to design using a hybrid of hands-on physical and digital tools

In short, the programme has grown due to the increasing interest in technology within our community and the accomplishments of our students Many of our graduates from various disciplines (not just those studying Media and/or Technology) are delighted to find that the skills they learned in Adobe Creative Cloud applications (such as Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Character Animator, Premiere, and others) have provided them with creative and technical abilities that their peers often have to “catch up” on during their university studies Our technology projects offer Bayview Glen students the opportunity to create transformational and creative works in various settings that were previously not possible This aligns with the ideas of thinkers like Dr Ruben Punderdura, who has emphasized technology integration that goes beyond mere substitution, augmentation, and modification of tasks

Although our projects, skills, and applications have evolved in response to the rapid pace of technological innovation — from graphic design to animation to video production — one constant remains: our students critically assess the use of technology and leverage their skills to do good and support our community Most recently, two students successfully applied to join the Teen Fact-checking Network through MediaSmarts ca, where they use their communication and editing skills to create short videos for social media aimed at combating misinformation through research, fact-checking, and humour The short videos can be seen on Instagram (@mediasmarts ca) We are so proud of Grade 10 student Lukas and Grade 9 student Tamara (Toma) for their progress and work in this area

Both Lukas and Toma are members of BVG tv, an co-curricular club founded by alumni Aaron Davis ’19 and Pranav Kratri ’19, along with other enthusiastic technology students The club was created to produce videos, use technology, and share stories (especially those that are less traditionally celebrated i e beyond sports and music) from our Upper School students through video and animation This legacy continues, with BVG tv playing a vital role in sustaining our community during the challenges of disconnectedness caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and continuing today as a welcomed feature in our assemblies every Wednesday

Our Grade 11 and 12 Communication Technology students are particularly focussed on post-secondary study and opportunities beyond our community The programme culminates with an internship and partnership with CHOP FM 102 7, which operates a student radio station at Pickering College Last year, we also volunteered at the ImagineNative festival, where we assisted Indigenous creators in sharing their films, animation, video games, and other technological exhibits with both investors and the public Each Grade 12 Communication Technology student creates a “passion project” documentary that addresses a local social issue meaningful to them These multidisciplinary projects not only provide valuable content for digital portfolios but demonstrate our connection to our local community and prepare students for post-secondary education and beyond

Whether it’s creating audio book reviews for our library, producing podcasts for our BVG:radio site, making instructional videos for the Fitness Room equipment, or continuing our tradition of promoting the hard work and creativity of the BVG Players for our much-loved annual play, the legacy of technology students at the Upper School is incredibly strong Our next steps involve students using AI tools to guide their studies and scholarship, all while maintaining a standard of excellence in telling stories that captivate and solve the challenges of today and tomorrow through technology
