M

ention construction equipment to the average person and an excavator is probably the image that comes to their mind – excavators are everywhere. Excavators capture the imagination of little kids in the sandbox, of big kids (and adults) with models, and of the adults that get to operate them for a living. My first excavator experience was with the mid-size Caterpillar machine that dug the foundation for our family home back in the 1990s. Our basement was built into the side of some solid rock and my eight-year-old self was thrilled by the power of the excavator’s breaker and amazed by the ability of this one machine to transform an empty lot into the foundation for our house. I’ve since learned that excavators can do a whole lot more than dig a foundation or break rock. In this issue’s spec guide, we take a look at excavators in the 20- to 50-ton range. These machines have become increasingly versatile with the power and ability to take on all kinds of jobs, including digging, lifting, material handling, and more. In our spec guide, manufacturers have emphasized features that make the operator comfortable and highlight the technology options that make today’s excavators easier to maintain and more efficient and precise than ever. As we prepare this issue, I’m watching a mid-size excavator (a John Deere 350G) take on a range of site prep tasks outside my office window – dismantling an old playground, sorting materials for different waste diversion streams, moving logs, stump removal, and digging up old asphalt are just a few of the tasks that this machine with two buckets, a thumb, and some slings has efficiently carried out over a few days. One machine, its operator, and a couple crew members on the ground have transformed the block in preparation for much needed new housing, green space, and community services. Across the country, Canadian cities are in various stages of revitalization – we need housing and services that can adequately serve our growing population and changing de-

A notable example is the City of Calgary, where repurposing property that no longer meets the needs of the community has become easier with demolition incentives. The impressive images of this massive machine at work have certainly thrilled my inner eight-yearold, delivering joy to that little kid who loved big machines. I hope you’re awed by them too.

s equipment manufacturers look ahead to the remainder of 2023 and beyond, the landscape continues to present challenges for the industry and the construction markets it serves. AEM members report demand for products across the industry has softened. However, in construction, investments in infrastructure, energy, and utilities point to better days ahead. And, as outlined in AEM’s recently held Q3 Equipment Outlook Webinar, the data suggests optimism – both in the short term and long term. Sara Feuling, AEM’s senior director of construction, comments on the challenges and opportunities facing the construction industry: “As the construction industry embraces change, there will be no shortage of challenges on the horizon,” says Feuling. “However, along with those challenges come a multitude of opportunities. Numerous equipment technologies will fundamentally transform the way the construction industry operates, which necessitates an entirely new approach, not only to the job site itself but also to people and the workforce. A variety of alternative power solutions also will be considered and implemented as the industry looks to reduce its carbon footprint, each bringing along with it its own unique challenges. The construction industry is nothing but resilient, though, and it will continue to face challenges head-on and take advantage of opportunities in front of it. “It’s long been said the industry is slow to adapt to and adopt technology. That’s not entirely the case, however. The men and women who support the industry want to do their jobs efficiently and effectively, and they take pride in their work. New and cutting-edge construction equipment technologies allow them to do their work faster, better, and safer. And, as technology is adopted, its benefits to people, the planet, and productivity will be validated, driving wider industry adoption. Finally, manufacturers continue to invest in technology, focusing on the needs of their customers. The construction industry will soon see proven benefits, along with an even greater return on their investment.”


TEREX ADVANCE TO INTEGRATE CUMMINS HYDROGEN ENGINES INTO CONCRETE MIXERS

T

erex Advance, a manufacturer of front-discharge concrete mixer trucks, will integrate Cummins’ X15H hydrogen internal combustion engines into the Terex Advance Commander Series front discharge concrete mixer trucks. “As the global need to reduce emissions becomes stronger, we are actively pursuing practical, cost-effective strategies to help our ready-mix customers decarbonize,” said David Grabner, general manager at Terex Advance. “Cummins’ X15H is a feasible zero-carbon option for our renowned front-discharge mixer trucks, and we are eagerly anticipating the future deployment of this technology.” Currently powered by Cummins diesel engines, the Terex Advance Commander Series will include a zero-carbon hydrogen fuel option when series production of Cummins’ X15H engines begins later this decade. “Hydrogen internal combustion engines provide a viable zero-carbon fuel option for heavy-duty, high-performance applications like concrete mixer trucks, which are often subject to arduous duty cycles and tough terrain,” said Jim Nebergall, general manager at Cummins Hydrogen Engine Business. Part of Cummins’ fuel-agnostic platform, the X15H is based on familiar internal combustion engine technology. Integration into the truck chassis is straightforward and does not require a major overhaul of vehicle designs or business operations. The significant commonality between the X15H and Cummins’ existing diesel platforms facilitates scale advantages in parts procurement and supports existing maintenance practices. “We believe that hydrogen internal combustion engines will play an essential part in decarbonizing both on- and off-highway applications. With diesel-like power and torque the X15H gives our customers a power option that delivers, no matter how hard their trucks work, or how tough the operating environment is,” concluded Nebergall. Hydrogen internal combustion engines enable vocational applications to comply with the EPA’s proposed greenhouse gas (GHG) Phase 3 standard, while still meeting critical performance requirements.

PERKINS REBRANDS TO BETTER ALIGN WITH SUSTAINABLE POWER GOALS

P

PRINOTH TO EXPAND QUEBEC CRAWLER CARRIER MANUFACTURING FACILITY

P

RINOTH will invest $25 million to expand its Granby, Quebec, manufacturing plant. The company will increase the facility from 120,000 square feet to 200,000 square feet. The expansion will increase production capacity. Prinoth says that a variety of elements geared toward production modernization and a dedication to Industry 4.0 practices will be integral to the project. The Granby plant is where PRINOTH designs and produces the Panther crawler carrier vehicle models, the Bison snow groomer, and the SW50 snow removal machine. The expansion has already begun and is expected to be completed by November 2024.

H2 GREEN STEEL TO SUPPLY VOLVO GROUP WITH NEAR-ZERO EMISSIONS STEEL

V

olvo Group has taken a step forward in its goal of achieving a net zero GHG emission value chain by 2040 with a collaboration with H2 Green Steel. Under the agreement, Volvo Group will purchase near-zero emission steel from H2 Green Steel. The start of production is planned for the end of 2025 with deliveries to Volvo Group starting mid 2026. Steel is one of the main materials in the manufacturing of trucks, buses, and construction machines. Near-zero emission steel focuses on reducing emissions to a point where the impact on the environment is significantly minimized if not entirely eliminated.

THE UTILITY EXPO 2023 ATTRACTS RECORD-SETTING 21,000 ATTENDEES

T

he Utility Expo made its return to Louisville, Kentucky, with a record-setting gathering of over 21,000 utility construction professionals from all 50 states and 60 countries. These industry experts came together to experience the latest equipment and technologies in the utility sector. “From every perspective, this year’s Utility Expo surpassed all expectations, offering an abundance of sights and experiences for attendees,” said John Rozum, The Utility Expo show director. “Our goal is to bring utility pros together with exhibitors and equipment manufacturers to advance the utility industry and showcase how the equipment, products, and technologies help keep our communities working and thriving.” The Utility Expo 2023 featured over 900 exhibitors showcasing the latest products and solutions for the utility construction industry. Exhibits covered a record 1.5 million net square feet and included interactive product demonstrations. Registered attendance of over 21,000 smashed the previous attendance record set in 2019. “I like coming to The Utility Expo so I can put a face to a name when talking with vendors,” said Ryan W., who works for a utility company in New York. “We get to see what is new that will help make the job easier and safer.”

ACCELERA BY CUMMINS JOINS DAIMLER AND PACCAR TO ACCELERATE U.S. BATTERY CELL PRODUCTION

T

hree big players in the engine and truck segment are joining forces to expand battery cell production and supply. Accelera, the zero-emissions business unit of Cummins, is partnering with Daimler Trucks and PACCAR to accelerate and localize battery cell production and the battery supply chain in the U.S. The planned joint venture will manufacture battery cells for electric commercial vehicles and industrial applications. Accelera by Cummins, Daimler Truck, and PACCAR will each own 30 percent of the joint venture which will initially focus on the lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery technology for commercial battery-electric trucks.

The C314 mini track loader is designed to be maneuverable on diverse job sites and can handle many tasks, including loading, dumping, and drilling. Powered by a 25-hp engine, the C314 is compatible with New Holland attachments with an auxiliary flow rate of 15 gpm. A common industry interface and 14-pin electric multifunction control provide use of new and older attachments such as augers, trenchers, grapple buckets, and more. The operator is placed closer to the drive and motor, enhancing machine control and stability. Operators also benefit from hydraulic pilot joystick control, a cushioned platform, hand throttle, and grab handles. The machine has a rated operating capacity of 1,000 pounds (at 35 percent of tipping load) and 35 inches of working space.

John Deere Construction & Forestry

The 244, 324, and 344 P-Tier compact wheel loaders carry over John Deere’s L-Series features while adding new standard features under the Performance Tiering strategy. Ride control, previously an option, is now standard on all P-Tier compact wheel loaders, cushioning boom movements during transport to aid in reducing material spillage. Articulation Plus enables rearwheel steering to increase full-turn tipping load and improve maneuverability. It combines 30 degrees of standard articulation with an additional 10 degrees of rear-wheel steering. Upgraded combined creep control and throttle lock allows users to run at higher rpms and lower ground speeds with overall fewer manual inputs. An optional auto-reversing fan is available.

The 5-in-1 Multifunction Power System is powered by a Honda gas engine and includes five different tools: a 40 cfm rotary screw air compressor, an 8 kW generator, a 250 amp welder, a 300 amp battery booster, and a 12 and 24V battery charger. It emits 58 dB at low idle and 73 dB at high idle, reducing noise levels on job sites, and weighs only 500 pounds to reduce its impact on vehicle weight. It has an hourly output of up to 661 US tons per hour thanks to an electric 335 hp drive and heavy rotor that is combined with efficient pre-screening. Powered by the E-DRIVE all-electric drive concept, the MR 130i PRO can be operated on-site free of emissions and with reduced maintenance and service costs. A robust crushing unit is followed by a large, optional double-deck post screening unit that makes it possible, with a single machine and without an additional screening plant, to produce two classified final grain sizes. The crusher also features the SPECTIVE operating system which gives operators a variety of ways to run the machine, including by remote control.

DEVELON

The DX42-7 is a 47-hp mini excavator with a conventional tail swing configuration that is suited for tight, congested job sites and urban areas. Features include torque-limiting piston pumps that respond to load demands and a larger counterweight for improved balance and durability. An optional fourway swing blade on the front enables easier blade positioning and reduces the need for frequent machine repositioning while facilitating efficient backfilling. The machine is available with either a canopy or enclosed cab, and other features include a thumb-ready arm, quick coupler-ready design, and swappable lever pattern controls.

riestly Demolition has come a long way since Vic Priestly founded his first business in 1961 at the age of 12. His first company primarily completed landscaping and snow removal work and eventually opened a garden centre in 1970. In 1971, Vic Priestly formed Vic Priestly Contracting Limited, which worked in earthworks, underground utilities, demolition, snow removal, and landscaping. The company grew dramatically, initially with the acquisition of Midway Disposal in 1974 and then National Demolition in 1988. Vic Priestly Contracting Limited’s venture into demolition began with farm structures, and the company became known as “the farm wreckers” in the early days. But Vic Priestly quickly focused on the year-round work that demolition offered. With early successes in the demolition industry, growth was on the horizon and Vic eventually unionized in 1993 with 10 employees forming what is known today as Priestly Demolition Inc (PDI). “Terminal 1 at YYZ [Toronto Pearson International Airport] in 2004 really put PDI on the map, it proved we could handle large demolition projects, establishing our trajectory for large projects in the future,” says Enrique Bayata, general manger for Priestly Demolition Inc. PDI has since expanded into Windsor, Ontario, with majority share acquisition of Jones Group in 2022; Ohio and Kentucky, USA, with a majority share acquisition of Green City Demolition in 2023; and Western Canada with the acquisition of Dakota Reclamators, a demolition, remediation, and salvage company headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, in 2021. Priestly had always done projects nationwide, but was seeking a full-time presence in the Western Canada market in order to better serve its clients. The Dakota Reclamators acquisition ultimately gave PDI that footprint in Alberta. PDI now has well over 400 employees operating in the Greater Toronto Area, Ottawa, Calgary, on the East Coast, and in the U.S.

CITY OF CALGARY USES DEMOLITION AS PART OF ITS CITY PLANNING STRATEGY

As cities mature and economies change, developers look at ways to meet those changes with appropriate building and infrastructure planning. This is where demolition becomes part of the conversation. Part of a broader strategy of eliminating six million square feet of office space, the City of Calgary is revamping the downtown core by eliminating up to 200,000 square feet of vacant office spaces by 2031, dubbed the Downtown Office Demolition Incentive Program. The $3 million program taps into unused funding in the city’s existing downtown plan, providing grants to approved property owners for the removal of inefficient and end-of-life buildings that negatively impact the downtown vibrancy. The program subsidizes the cost of demolition, granting $15 per square foot of space demolished, with another $5 per square foot available if asbestos or other hazardous materials are identified and need to be removed. In efforts to reel in the vacancy rate and revitalize the city, the program has generated a new appetite for redeveloping office space in downtown Calgary by either retrofitting buildings or by demolition. A lot of these older office buildings were built during prior energy booms. While they have served their purpose, today they aren’t needed or desired as the economy, demographics, and lifestyle of Calgarians shifts. When city planners and developers think about how they can change the downtown Calgary landscape, demolition is an important component.

PDI ADDS A MASSIVE KOBELCO MACHINE TO THE LARGEST DEMOLITION FLEET IN CANADA

Priestly Demolition operates one of the largest demolition fleets in Canada, with 13 high-reach excavators in its 250+ piece fleet, making it one of Canada’s most capable demolition contractors. PDI recently acquired a KOBELCO SK1600D high-reach excavator – arguably now the star of its fleet. Beginning its life in Japan, the machine was then purchased by a group in California, after which PDI purchased the machine bringing it to Canada for a 12-storey building demolition in Edmonton and now a 10-storey building in Calgary. With 167 feet of vertical reach measured to the top pin on the fourth stick, the KOBELCO SK1600D is PDI’s highest-reaching machine; when fitted with a 6,000-pound Okada processor the machine boasts a reach of 173 feet. What makes this particular machine uniquely capable of challenging demolition projects is its flexibility in configuration. Comprised of four sections – main boom, mid stick, stick, and fourth stick commonly referred to as the “stinger” – this machine can easily be adapted to different configurations. Each section is removed by pulling pins and hydraulic quick connects. For instance, with removal of the fourth stick, the machine can be fitted with a 15,000-pound Atlas Copco CC6000 processor reaching 140 feet for demolishing elevator cores and other structurally tough components of a building. “We brought [the KOBELCO SK1600D] out for this project in Calgary because of its reach. Not only can you reach down on the building to safely demolish floors and structural beams, but you sit farther back which gives the operator a better line

DEMOLITION of sight into the building,” says Matt Baker, heavy equipment operator with Priestly Demolition Inc. For increased visibility to the work tool when reaching up 173 feet, the cab tilts 30 degrees. A camera mounted on the fourth stick is viewable on a screen mounted in the cab. For a machine of this size and weighing 398,000 pounds, transportation is relatively quick with complete setup taking roughly one day. The machine breaks down into eight loads for transport, with assembly made easy thanks to four built-in hydraulic jacks that can raise and lower the carbody for the track frames to be attached. Using a mobile crane, 50 tonnes of counterweight fits snuggly in the back, and the 167-foot boom weighing another 50 tonnes is assembled on the ground in sections. The SK1600D is now the largest high-reach machine in Canada, and PDI is well-positioned to meet the challenge of large demolition projects in the coming decade. PDI’s investment in an impressive fleet is paralleled by a commitment to investing in its people. Being a high-reach operator requires great skill, patience, knowing your machine, and the ability to read the building as it is demolished. “They [Priestly Demolition] observe you, they know what you are capable of, and they want to give you opportunity,” says Rob Morrison, a heavy equipment operator with Priestly Demolition.

PDI THRIVES ON CHALLENGING DEMOLITION PROJECTS

This particular project, a 140-foot-tall 10-storey building with adjacent two-storey ground level addition, was the first large project for Priestly Demolition in Calgary. Located on the corner of 17th Avenue and 4th Street, this once bustling office building did not qualify for the office demolition incentive program grant, but is certainly part of the overall picture of revamping the downtown core. “This is our first big project in downtown Calgary. It’s helping PDI establish ourselves and we are really excited to perform this with our big high-reach machine,” says Bayata. Planning for this 10-storey demolition started in 2022, with PDI mobilizing in March 2023 to begin two months of abatement work removing hazardous asbestos materials from the interior. Once complete, the remaining interior was gutted and all materials dropped down the elevator shaft where a skid steer loaded out material into bins and onto highway trucks. This particular project certainly didn’t come without its challenges, but Priestly thrives on the challenge that demolition presents. “One of the challenges we had with this project was the fact there were no engineering records or blueprints on file for the building. Our in-house engineering team used scanners, computer-based modelling software, and performed test cuts into the building’s structure to determine rebar presence and type, concrete thickness, and overall structural condition of the building as it has aged,” explains Cesar Ortiz, lead engineer with Priestly Demolition Inc. PDI has an in-house engineering team, and by using Building Information Modelling software (BIM) to scan and model buildings, PDI was able to produce an engineering model of the building, make pertinent calculations, and provide 3D structural drawings for demolition planning. In the scenario of this 10-storey building with a 2-storey addition, these in-house resources proved to be incredibly advantageous. Once the building was stripped of all materials down to a concrete and rebar skeleton, the high-reach excavators and other equipment moved in to start demolition. Demolition on this project began with removal of the 2-storey adjacent build-

ing and associated underground parking. Once complete, there was room to stage the KOBELCO machine for the main demolition. PDI used a crane to remove pre-cast concrete panels that formed the building’s facade, and then the KOBELCO SK1600D had its chance to shine. Starting on floor eight and working up to the roof, the machine removed floors then collapsed structural columns and beams inward. Surrounded on three sides by active roadways with vehicular and pedestrian traffic, in addition to a restaurant 10 feet away on another side, PDI’s people and safe demolition practices were really put to the test. PDI used two cranes to hold up large screens to prevent any demolition material from leaving the site footprint. One 100-tonne crane held up a 127foot screen and a 65-tonne crane held up an 80-foot screen adjacent to the demolition excavator as it worked the upper floors. After the KOBELCO machine removed upper floors, support equipment including a CASE CX460 with 98-foot Jewel highreach boom and Komatsu PC490 with Atlas Copco processor, handled the lower floors. Nearly everything in the building was recycled – from concrete and rebar to wood and other metals. Successful projects like this, and the investment in people, safety, and machines, to complete them, are a fine example of Priestly Demolition’s capabilities as the company continues to grow into Western Canada and other regions of North America. s urban landscapes evolve, demolition of structures is needed in cities. However, demolition can be dusty business, and mitigating the environmental and health impacts that can be associated with demolition requires effective dust control. On a demolition project in historic Uppsala, Sweden, contractor Normans AB required dust suppression to protect the ecologically sensitive area, adjacent properties, and dense population of residents from the harmful effects of airborne particles. The company selected Dynaset’s HPW-DUST high-pressure dust suppression system for the job.

Dynaset’s HPW-DUST is a high-pressure water system with nozzles that produce a fine mist at the point of dust production; these fine water droplets bind and settle airborne dust particles, drastically reducing the amount of dust that escapes into the environment. HPW-DUST is powered by the hydraulics of the machine it is mounted on, which is used to produce high-pressure water. Water is then sprayed from the nozzles mounted on the demolition attachment. odern asphalt rollers can incorporate technology that guarantees paving jobs meet strict specifications for compaction and smoothness. Connectivity between machines is becoming an increasingly important part of the process. Connected rollers that share information across a job site can complete their work faster and with better results. At the same time, the data collected by each roller can be stored, analyzed, and used in many ways – as part of future bids, for quality control purposes, and for training new labour.

INTEREST IN CONNECTED COMPACTION IS GROWING

For BOMAG, connected compaction has grown steadily over the past several years. It started with the BOMAP app, providing users with access to various equipment and project details. It expanded with BOMAP Connect, which brings the entire compaction equipment fleet together. Chaunce Edwards, product manager with SMS Equipment, explains that BOMAP Connect aims to ensure that roller crews reach their target density and compaction levels across each project in a user-friendly manner. Based on an Android tablet and a downloadable app, this brand-agnostic system uses sensors on the BOMAG machine – and other brands – to collect data.

“Historically, operators would rely on experience or have a foreman who would say they had to hit a certain area five or six times to reach their target,” Edwards describes. “What the BOMAP system does is . . . as we’re compacting an area, it will paint out a grid and determine how many times you have been over a certain area.” As rollers move across those locations, the colours on the map change, providing operators with a visual indication of the compaction quality in those areas. A ten-point scale is used to determine the level of compaction – a 7 or 8 is a good target, while a 10 is over-compacted.

It gives peace of mind – as a job is completed, you can see that we did indeed hit all these areas, and everything is compacted. We won’t have any callbacks, and I won’t have any rework to do. The result, Edwards says, is that you burn less fuel and reduce the environmental footprint of the job. Costs are reduced, and overall efficiency is improved.

Live compaction data can also help you recognize potential problems before they occur. Edwards offers the example of a roller crew that can reach a compaction level of 8 across most sites but only a 4 in a particular location. This may be an indicator of a failing utility below the road or a problem spot in the gravel base that should be investigated before the job is completed. When set up on a tablet in the machine, BOMAP Connect uses the tablet’s GPS signal to plot the machine’s location. Accuracy can be improved by adding a GPS antenna to the machine, giving position accuracy up to 20 centimetres. This is more than enough accuracy for a roadway or similar project, Edwards says. Millimetre accuracy can be achieved by connecting to base stations on the site. “Most of our customers have found that the 20 centimetre accuracy works for them. Generally we are overlapping passes slightly anyways to ensure overall coverage,” he notes.

DATA PROVIDES QUALITY CONTROL SNAPSHOT AFTER COMPLETION

The second benefit of BOMAP Connect, once the job is complete, is that fleet managers have a vast amount of data that was collected during the compaction process available for processing and analysis. This includes pass counts, temperature, and other factors that affect compaction quality. With that level of knowledge, it is possible to review jobs and then pass along details to project owners and regulatory bodies as needed. You can also use the system in conjunction with a Troxler measurement device determining the correct number of passes in a test strip. Mix designs have different rolling requirements depending on materials and temperatures. The result is a much more precise awareness of how many passes must be done to hit targets without needing someone to check compaction quality behind the rollers on site.


As the job is underway, data is uploaded to a cloud server that allows users off-site to review progress within a few minutes in real time. If the crew needs to move to another job for a few days, they can then go back, log in through the cloud, and quickly pick up where they left off. That data is then available after completion for further review or sharing with the end user. Many provincial and municipal agencies are requesting more data for analysis as they work toward understanding the most efficient and environmentally friendly approaches to road construction. “They want to see the jobs are completed as best as possible, and they also want to see that they’re completed as efficiently as possible,” Edwards says. “Trying to lower CO2 emissions is probably more of a driving factor currently, but in the cities . . . we’re starting to see interest in quality control for jobs completed by these contractors.” That data can also be used to prepare bids for new contracts, showing how previous jobs were completed and providing you with a greater opportunity to succeed.

The growth of data collection in compaction provides contractors and end users with a more remarkable ability to confirm that a paving job meets the proper specifications, Edwards says. “It gives peace of mind – as a job is completed, you can see that we did indeed hit all these areas, and everything is compacted. amm has expanded the HD+ series of asphalt rollers with six new models in the 7- and 8-tonne range, including the HD+ 70i and HD+ 80i. These Tier 4 Final/Stage V models feature Hamm’s Easy Drive operating concept. They are also digital-ready – fitted with the needed interfaces for use with digital applications such as telematics, fleet management systems, and compaction control and documentation. Easy Drive is an operating concept that streamlines running Hamm tandem rollers, soil compactors, and pneumatic tire rollers by ensuring control look and layout are very similar from model to model. For example, buttons for the same function use the same colour from cab to cab, and the location of controls is similar across the line. The result is easier and more ergonomic operation. All HD+ models are available as vibration, oscillation, or combination rollers. They are designed to compact economically and provide similar driving and handling characteristics compared to heavier rollers in the series. But, with compact proportions, they can maneuver more easily on tight construction sites. CB has developed a single-machine pothole and patching repair solution to fix potholes permanently, the first time, without the need for labour-intensive repair methods or additional expensive machinery. Tests with contractors and municipalities show that the Pothole Pro can repair a pothole in less than eight minutes – four times quicker than standard methods and at half the cost of current solutions, according to JCB. With a 25-mph travel speed, the machine can rapidly relocate between sites without additional transport costs.

HOW THE POTHOLE PRO WORKS

The JCB Pothole Pro is equipped with a planer which is mounted on the machine’s rear skid-steer hitch. The planer

is 24 inches wide, with up to 4.26 feet of side-shift adjustment. This allows the operator to plane a full roadway lane from the curb without repositioning the machine. Hydraulic tilt and depth control provide a consistent depth for larger patches. The machine’s TAB two-piece boom features the JCB multi-tool mounted on an X12 Steelwrist tiltrotator. The multitool is comprised of two attachments, a dedicated hydraulic cropper and a sweeper/bucket, with integrated dust suppression. The 16-inch cropping tool eliminates the need for floor saws or hydraulic breakers, providing a squared off, clean cut to the repair area. The machine was tested on roads in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, in the U.K. and the city council worked with JCB for 12 months as innovation partners to develop the Pothole Pro. In initial testing, the machine completed 51 road repair jobs in 20 days, which would have taken a crew of six workers 63 days to complete normally. The council became the first to invest in one of the machines last year and earlier this year celebrated a major milestone in its mission to fix potholes quickly and permanently – after completing almost three years of repairs in just over four months with the Pothole Pro. The local authority has repaired 13,080

cubic yards of road with the JCB Pothole Pro in just 130 days. Using traditional methods, this task would have taken a staggering 1,040 days, or almost three years. The Pothole Pro has also been tested and evaluated in North America, most recently at multiple municipalities in Pennsylvania. “I was very impressed with how quick-

ly it worked, the speed of the mill head is definitely faster than anything I’ve utilized out on a job site, and the maneuverability was fantastic,” says Neil Stoltzfus, roadmaster of West Earl Township in Pennsylvania. “This would typically have been a three-machine operation and instead the Pothole Pro was able to accomplish the task with one machine, without changing any attachments.”

T

he Liebherr LTM 1100-5.3 is a five-axle all-terrain crane designed to meet a wide range of axle load regulations while providing power and significant reach. Liebherr focused on lightweight construction when designing the LTM 1100-5.3, allowing it to carry as much ballast as possible with a 12-ton axle load and to achieve the lowest possible axle loads by reducing ballast. With different ballast weights, the crane can achieve axle weights down to 9 tons as needed, making it capable of performing jobs as a taxi crane without additional ballast transport. Even at maximum ballast (13.5-ton axle load) weight is kept low and well-distributed. The crane features a 203-foot telescopic boom, and a 31- to 53-foot folding jib that can be adjusted hydraulically between 0 and 40 degrees is available. This enables the LTM 11005.3 to achieve hoisting heights of up to 249 feet and radii of up to 210 feet. The LTM 1100-5.3 uses the VarioBase variable outrigger for safety, flexibility, and lifting capacity; it also features VarioBallast, which allows the ballast radius to be adjusted. It is also equipped with the third generation of the LICCON (Liebherr Computed Control) system that relies on proven control features and includes a completely new software package.

TADANO ELECTRIC-POWERED CITY CRANE HANDLES DELICATE INDOOR LIFTING JOB

L

ifting heavy loads inside a building is a challenge that crane operators face on some jobs. Lifting in a clean room hall is a step up. Hack Schwerlastservice GmbH was contracted to work in Hitachi Energy Germany’s Bad Honnef plant inside a clean room – with no internal combustion engine emissions allowed. Hack turned to its 45-tonne Tadano AC 3.045-1 City crane, paired with Tadano’s E-Pack, to tackle the challenging indoor assignment. “Without the E-Pack for the AC 3.045-1 City we wouldn’t have had a hope of getting this job done,” says Udo Hack, managing director of the heavy-transport firm. Positioning the crane required patience and a squeeze through a door barely 3 metres wide, but once in place,

the overall set-up was quick and easy. The entire process from start to finish – including connection of the E-Pack – took about 30 minutes. The crane was able to operate in its standard configuration, handling all lifts, including those just below ceiling height, safely and securely. Located in one corner of the hall, the crane had to telescope in and out for each lift, which resulted in lower lift capacities. “Some of the components we had to lift, pipes and concrete parts weighing up to 12 tonnes, exceeded the crane’s lifting capacity,” says Hebert Schellberg, a Hack project manager. To get past that issue, some components had to be dismantled by the Hack team and plant engineers on site before lifting to reduce overall weight.

Powered through a connection to the grid, the E-Pack transforms the crane into a zero-emission and low-noise unit. That means no fuel or diesel exhaust fluid is used, which cuts operating costs significantly. The crane draws only as much electrical energy as it requires in order to perform the tasks at hand. This results in lower operating costs compared to a diesel system.

he GMK4070L expands Grove’s four-axle all-terrain crane offerings with a machine that the company says performs like a larger crane while including new technology and quick setup. Here are 8 key facts about this innovative new crane.

1 Pairing the 60-metre main boom with the 15-metre swingaway jib option gives the GMK4070L up to 78 metres of maximum tip height, which Grove says allows it to take on jobs typically needing larger cranes. 2 At the full 60 metres, the crane can lift up to 4.4 tonnes, while at 49 metres it can handle up to 8.3 tonnes. At its max radius of 46 metres, the GMK4070L can lift 1 tonne. 3 Multiple configurations can be chosen for travel. At 16.5 tonnes per axle, the crane can carry 17.8 tonnes of counterweight, just short of its full 19-tonne complement. At 12 tonnes per axle, it carries up to 13.3 tonnes of counterweight, and at 10 tonnes per axle, 5.3 tonnes. 4 A frictionless and maintenance-free Telma retarder

in the carrier helps cut overheating risk and overall wear and tear on the service brakes. It works even when the engine is off or the gearbox is in neutral. 5 The carrier and superstructure are both powered by a single 430-hp Mercedes-Benz OM470LA six-cylinder diesel engine that is approved for use with HVO. 6 It is one of the first Manitowoc cranes to offer the Grove CONNECT digital platform, offering owners real-time access to fleet data with just a few taps on a screen. 7 The optional MAXbase reduces set-up time and provides a wider choice of outrigger positions, both symmetric and asymmetric. This aids operators in confined spaces or where obstacles are preventing set-up at the preferred location. 8 The Crane Control System supports both set-up and lifting. he best way to ensure reliability for vibrating screens is to always choose original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts. While fabrication shops often produce quality components, they can’t guarantee parts built to OEM standards. A vibrating screen works as a total system, so minor differences in size, weight, and material can lead to a chain reaction of damage, ultimately resulting in lost profit. Here are the four most important vibrating screen parts to buy from the OEM: Shaft Components Shaft com-

ponents form the heart of a vibrating screen and are machined from specific material to 1/1,000 inch, so any flaws can damage an entire machine. For example, if a fabrication shop doesn’t design the shaft shoulders within OEM tolerances, the small difference in size can cause the shaft assembly stack to be too tight or too loose. This can lead to excessive heat and wear, and even potential failure of the shaft and body components. Mounting Components The mounting components are designed to deflect at a certain spring rate, depending on the weight of the vibrating screen. Replacing

a damaged part with a fabricated version that may not be the correct material or design could cause the spring rate to be thrown off. This could mean the mounting assembly can’t take as much load and may be too soft, leading to another break, or it could be too stiff, which may cause side panels to break. Deck Frames All material is classified using screen media, which is supported by the deck frames. That makes the deck frame quality extremely important. If a fabrication shop doesn’t manufacture the deck frame according to the machine’s specifications, the media will not tension correctly, leading to broken screen media, contaminated product, and other potential damage. Side Plates Properly fitted side plates are vital to the structure and functionality of a vibrating screen. If one side plate is replaced, and the fabricated version doesn’t exactly match the opposite, it can unleash a series of positioning issues down the line. Even the smallest inconsistency can trigger problems with the shaft assembly and cause the machine to rack. While the money saved on buying aftermarket parts may seem big initially, the end result could cause additional downtime and costs. Before buying, consider the potential hazards of using a fabricated part and look at the value of having the support of the original equipment manufacturer. SIDE DUMP TRAILERS ARE SAFE, SPEEDY & VERSATILE BY LEE TOOP, EDITOR

E

arthmoving, construction, and aggregates operations all need to move vast amounts of material onto, around, and away from their job sites to successfully complete contracts. Dump trucks are the usual choice for that role, but for fleet owners, there is another option to consider – one that can offer more capacity and versatility when it’s needed. Side dump trailers are popular in quarries and on some large construction sites for their speed and ability to safely handle many types of material. A selection of trailer sizes and capacities, combined with a low profile and reduced maintenance, make side dumps a versatile option for fleet owners to consider.

SIDE DUMP DESIGN ADDS SAFETY AND REDUCES WEAR Built on dedicated frames available in varying axle configurations and sizes, side dump trailers hook up to a truck with a fifth-wheel connection. Available in A-trains, B-trains, and other custom applications, side dumps do just what the name says: dump to the side of the truck, rather than to the end. That side-to-side motion is where these trailers differentiate themselves from end dumps, says Duane Myears, district sales manager with SmithCo. “This eliminates wearing of the floor, which happens in typical end dumps. As you start the dump motion, the stuff on the top starts falling off, so the whole load doesn’t slide. Side dumps don’t wear the steel like a typical end dump,” Myears explains.

A selection of trailer sizes and capacities, combined with a low profile and reduced maintenance, make side dumps a versatile option for fleet owners to consider. “The tub is watertight, so you can haul a varying array of material, from sand as small as powder concentrates all the way up to big landscaping rock or rip-rap. If you can get it into the tub, you can haul and dump it.” The design of a side dump trailer makes it safer in locations with overhead barriers, where standard dump trucks could be problematic. “During the dump cycle, because the load dumps to the side, the top of the tub is only up to around 11 feet off the ground. You don’t have to worry about power lines or tree limbs,” Myears says. In addition, dumping is faster. “You pull into your dump site, turn your PTO on and hit your dump switch, dump the load, and bring the tub back to the frame in 26 seconds,” Myears describes.


STABLE AND SAFE OPERATION

While there are several ways in which side dump trailers can improve a hauling operation, Myears points to improved safety as an important benefit. The ability to avoid overhead obstacles is just a starting point for added safety when using a side dump. The ability to handle all the needed operations from within the cab means drivers are less exposed to bad weather and slippery conditions. “You don’t get out of the truck, so there’s a safety factor that prevents drivers tripping on their steps or sliding around in inclement weather. You pull up and do everything from the driver’s seat,” Myears says. The side dump motion improves stability and safety overall, allowing the opportunity to dump on uneven or soft ground. It can even be used to create windrows by dumping on the move. Maintenance is also safer, and easier, than other types of haul trucks or trailers. All grease points for the trailer are accessible from ground level, including the hydraulic cylinder and dump body pivots. That reduces downtime while keeping drivers and mechanics clear of potential harm. Another benefit of side dump trailers is the wide array of materials that can be hauled compared to traditional dump trucks or end dump trailers. Many side dumps are in use at aggregate and mining sites, where they often handle large material sizes. This makes them more capable than end dump or belly dump units, Myears says. “With a belly dump you can only haul so large of an aggregate – it can only be so big because you’re driving over the pile, it would get stuck in the hopper, or you would pull your axles over it and damage suspension parts. If you get large or oddshaped pieces, a lot of times they’ll get hung up in an end dump and won’t slide out. In a side dump, if you get it in there, you can dump it out.” In B.C., many side dumps are used at mine sites to haul con-

centrate. The trailers work well as they can be fitted tightly with sealed tarps, keeping the valuable product dry and enclosed. In uses such as road construction, where the old road surface is broken up and hauled away for recycling, side dump trailers can carry larger pieces of material speeding up the process. Plus, Myears notes, the truck can then haul fill dirt back to the site, windrow material for edging, and handle other tasks. SmithCo has specific models of trailer for demolition, while land clearing operations can use side dumps effectively for hauling tree limbs and trunks in larger pieces, cutting down on labour. Municipalities use side dumps to haul sludge from wastewater treatment plants, taking advantage of their watertight nature to avoid leaks.

VERSATILITY IN CARRYING CAPACITY AND TASKS

Variable tasks and regional regulations match up well with the available side dump trailer design variations. SmithCo, one of the earliest manufacturers of side dump units, has trailers ranging from two to seven axles. A-train and B-train units add capacity in regions where they are legal for use, Myears says. The result is the ability to customize a trailer system that maximizes the amount it can carry within local requirements. Using side dump trailers as opposed to dedicated trucks means fleet owners can use multiple trailers with a single truck, reducing overall expenses. “They can pull a lowboy, they can pull a flatbed, then they can hook onto the side dump. It’s another tool in their arsenal,” Myears says. “You get a side dump for one application, say ‘this is what I’m going to use this for,’ and pretty soon you find other things it works for, and it snowballs.” HEG

ith the 2024 F-150, Ford is focused on offering hybrid power options to truck owners who want to reduce their fuel consumption. The new models will also have a more accessible tailgate option, plus standard and optional technology features. Ford is increasing production of the PowerBoost Hybrid engine option for the new F-150, adding improved fuel economy. While the standard engine is the 2.7-litre EcoBoost with improved horsepower and torque compared to previous model years, the 3.5-litre PowerBoost will be available comparable in price to gas engine offerings. The PowerBoost engine generates 430 hp and 570 lb.-ft. of torque, Ford states. A 5.0-litre V8 option is also available, and Raptor models come with high-performance engine choices. PowerBoost hybrid-equipped trucks also come standard with Ford’s Pro Power Onboard power system. The base system pro-

Gas-powered truck owners can have a 2.0-kW version installed for lighter uses, and buyers who need more power may opt for the 7.2-kW level, which Ford says can supply power to a framing crew or mobile metal/welding shop for 32 hours straight. The new Pro Access Tailgate option gives users easier access to the truck bed. The swing gate opens from the driver’s side and swings 100 degrees to give users quick access to the box. Built-in stops on the swing door keep it from bumping other parts of the truck. The design allows users to reach farther into the bed compared to a traditional tailgate in the down position. Locking storage boxes behind one or both wheel wells are also standard. A suite of 10 driver-assist features is standard in the F-150, including the most recent versions of Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keeping System, and Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert. A range of trailering features are also available, including Onboard Scales with Smart Hitch. Smart Hitch measures tongue weight, and, combined with Onboard Scales, helps estimate real-time payload weight.
