Retired veterinarian turns to writing

Although Jim McLane spent his working years as a veterinarian — albeit with a love of English and the written world — it took him until his retirement to publish his first novel. Now, on Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. at the North Battleford Public Library, he’ll be reading from segments of his novel, Where Joy is Born, followed by a Q and A session.

“I always enjoyed writing in the creative process [in University],” he told the News-Optimist.

“We studied English

novels, like Oliver Twist, or Pride and Prejudice,” he said, adding, “... I really enjoyed learning about plot and character development, and stuff like that,” McLane said.

Now he says happy to be able to write without the pressures of a full-time job or raising children, finishing his novel of adventure and friendship, action, humour and intrigue just a few years ago.

“It’s a delightful story.

The children encounter a bully, who is very mean to them, and their pets, which challenges the children in many different ways. And when the children are in-

vited into an invalid’s life, they find themselves entering ... a hidden world that they had not thought much about.”

Beyond the theme of acceptance, McLane says the book also teaches children about dealing with the death of animals and how to process difficult emotions.

The children in the book, growing up in an unnamed small town in Saskatchewan also learn about nature and the universe during their adventures.

“The novel is big on forming relationships and dealing with those relationships, and dealing with responsibility and forgiveness. It’s a big part of that, as well.”

McLane has been working on the novel for years, but only after the pandemic brought him into retirement, he said he had time to both write the novel, as well as edit and rework it for publication again, in September 2023.

“It’s ready to go and meet the public,” he said.

A sequel, After Dawn Comes Laughter, is set to release early in 2024.

Partnering with officers from the Saskatoon Police Service, Battleford Community Safety Officers, Battlefords RCMP stopped 500 vehicles as part of a traffic safety initiative within the city of North Battleford and surrounding highways Oct. 19 to 21.

The results were: Twenty-six licence suspensions for testing positive for THC (on an approved screening device.

Eight licence suspensions as a result of approved screening device tests between .04 and .08 BAC One person was charged under the Cannabis Act (for having cannabis in a motor vehicle) Three people were charged under the Alcohol and Gaming Regulation Act (for having open alco-

hol in vehicle) One driver located with existing licence suspensions One-hundred-seventythree tickets were issued for various other offences (ex. speeding, distractive driving, seatbelts) Eleven invalid registrations (10 for invalid vehicle registration, 1 for invalid trailer registration) Thirty-two vehicles were impounded (for driver’s licence suspensions related to cannabis and alcohol) Two -hu nd r e d-for t yfour warnings were issued (for vehicle equipment regulations including mud flaps, burnt out headlights, cracked windshields Twelve vehicle inspections were issued Officers issued 34 roadside suspensions – 26 related to cannabis use and eight related to alcohol.

“This weekend was a perfect example of why check stops like this are so important. Through this traffic safety initiative, our officers continued to educate the public safe driving practices and the impacts of cannabis use,” said S/ Sgt. Kevin Williamson of the Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan.

“Cannabis remains in your body for a long time.

For perspective, when considering whether it’s safe for you to operate a vehicle or not, when inhaled, cannabis effects can begin immediately and last several hours. When ingested, cannabis effects can last even longer. When deciding whether to get behind the wheel, always make sure that if you have used cannabis or any THC products you choose other options for a safe ride to your destination.”

The city has touted the bylaw as another tool at their disposal to fight crime in the city. The bylaw replicates similar ones already in place in Nipawin and Prince Albert.

According to their news release, there are several exemptions under the bylaw, which will allow ac-

cess to those living adjacent and their permitted guests, those accessing for lawful business purposes, as well as law enforcement and first responders. Fines for those contravening the bylaw run from $250 to $2,500.

Legislature unanimous against federal carbon tax

The Carbon Tax came into sharp focus again this weekend upon news that the federal government would be granting an exemption suspending the Carbon Tax for home heating oil.

In response, or perhaps in retaliation, Premier Scott Moe took to X (Twitter) to call on the Feds to extend their pause to all forms of heating. If they did not, SaskEnergy would quit collecting the federal carbon tax on Jan. 1, 2024.

It turned out there was a unanimous reaction from the Legislature Monday against the Feds’ move. Opposition Leader Carla Beck stood up in Question Period to say her words on the issue, as recorded in Hansard.

Ms. Beck: — “Well, Mr. Speaker, it’s extraordinary, but we found some agreements between the two sides of the House.

Clearly, clearly what the federal government is doing isn’t fair. It’s not fair to allow the exemption in some parts of Canada but not extend that to the West.

In fact, Mr. Speaker, I’d say it’s extraordinarily unfair, and directing SaskEnergy to not collect the federal carbon tax is an extraordinary but justified measure if a deal to restore fairness can’t be found.”

Premier Moe reiterated what the provincial government planned to do: Hon. Mr. Moe: — “…

First, still our belief that the federal government should scrap the carbon tax for everyone on everything. Mr. Speaker, that’s priority number one. Second is they should extend

their pause to all forms of heating, Mr. Speaker. And if not, SaskEnergy is going to quit collecting the federal carbon tax come January the 1st.”

The Speaker: — “I recognize the Leader of the Opposition.”

Ms. Beck: — “Mr. Speaker, I’m not sure if the Premier heard the question, but there’s agreement there and for things that this government could and should be doing today to offer that relief.

But, Mr. Speaker, clearly people across this province, across the country are tired of divisive political games. They’re tired of the federal government sowing division between East and West for sure, and they’re tired of this provincial government that recalled this very legislature for nothing other than to sow division here in this province.

Shameful politics, Mr. Speaker, on all fronts.

So what is that Premier’s plan to make sure that the voices of Saskatchewan people are heard?

And what is his plan to get a deal that offers the same relief to people here in Saskatchewan?”

The Speaker: — “I recognize the Premier.”

Hon. Mr. Moe: — “Well I’m pretty sure the people of this province, their voice is being heard and heard well today with respect to ensuring that federal government, propped up by the NDP, Mr. Speaker, the federal government is fully aware that we believe that this carbon tax scheme that they have enacted, of which we have never agreed with, Mr. Speaker, is removed for everyone on everything. That’s priority one — remove this carbon

tax scheme, Mr. Speaker, this Trudeau carbon tax scheme that is supported by the NDP. Mr. Speaker, if there was ever a reason, if there was ever a reason to write your federal leader and say, remove our party from this confidence and supply agreement that you have signed, Mr. Speaker, today is that day. Will the Leader of the Opposition do that?”

The Speaker: — “I recognize the Leader of the Opposition.”

Ms. Beck: — “Well, Mr. Speaker, he didn’t ask for advice, but here’s some advice for him. Something I find more effective than tweeting, more effective than standing up in this legislature, is to actually have a plan. You know what? Earlier today I called the federal leader and I expressed very clearly the concerns of this province.

My understanding is they share our same concerns, but when he’s hopefully talking to all the federal leaders he will reiterate that and clarify that.

My question again: what is the Premier’s plan, other than tweets, other than standing up in this legislature, to actually get a deal to provide that relief to Saskatchewan people?”

The Speaker: — “I recognize the Premier.”

Hon. Mr. Moe: — “Mr. Speaker, our plan is to ensure that there is fairness for families across this nation. Mr. Speaker, our plan is to ensure that come January 1st, SaskEnergy bills that today are . . . 40 per cent of that bill is a federal carbon tax supported by the NDP, Mr. Speaker, an NDP right here in this House that called our Continued on Page 5

Carbon tax games are a slap in the face to Western Canada

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau just gave Western Canada another slap in the face.

The good news is that Trudeau is suspending his carbon tax on a home heating fuel.

The bad news is the exemption is for just one kind of home heating fuel.

Guess which kind?

Furnace oil, the kind of heating fuel found almost exclusively in the homes of Atlantic Canada, where Trudeau’s Liberal government holds a lot of seats.

Trudeau is suspending his federal carbon tax on furnace oil until just after the next election expected in two years.

The federal carbon tax currently costs 12 cents extra per cubic metre of natural gas, 10 cents extra per litre of propane and 17 cents extra per litre of furnace oil.

The average household in Atlantic Canada uses about 1,600 litres of furnace oil per year. That means the carbon tax would cost about $272 extra for winter heat.

That winter warmth will now get a temporary reprieve from Trudeau’s carbon tax. But the tax will still apply to propane and natural gas that many families in the rest of Canada use to stay warm.

What about the West? What early Christmas present did we get from Ottawa to ease the pain of winter heating bills?

The naive Westerner might be surprised to hear that it’s, as usual, nothing.

This is because most homes in Western Canada rely on natural gas for heat, not furnace oil.

An average Alberta home uses about 2,800 cubic metres of natural gas per year, so the carbon tax will cost Albertans about $337 extra to heat their home. Saskatchewan homes use about 2,244 cubic metres of natural gas costing $269 extra in the carbon tax per year and homes in Manitoba go through about 1,989 cubic metres of natural gas, costing $238 more for the winter.

Despite that regional unfairness, Thursday afternoon’s announcement displayed an important revelation.

Trudeau blinked.

He has finally been forced to admit the carbon tax

is unaffordable. He has had to concede that it is unwise and unfair to punish people with a carbon tax for the essential action of heating their homes to survive the Canadian winter.

The carbon tax carve out for only furnace oil is so obviously preferential that Trudeau is bound to get pressure from other corners of his caucus.

Average Ontario homes go through about 2,300 cubic meters of natural gas per year, costing them more than $280 extra per year in Trudeau’s carbon tax. The MP for Thunder Bay – Rainy River will be having some interesting conversations with his constituents.

Why aren’t they getting the same deal? It’s not surprising given that Trudeau hasn’t helped carve out needed carbon tax exemptions before.

Bill C-234 is a bill that seeks to remove the carbon tax from propane and natural gas for use on farms, because farmers, especially in rural areas, often have no other choice of fuel. In the House of Commons it received unanimous support from all parties except the Liberals. Three Liberal MPs voted in favour of the bill, all from Atlantic Canada.

Trudeau said his exemption for furnace oil is meant to give rural Canadians more time to switch to alternative sources. Just not if they happen to be farmers.

ate and swiftly become law would show that this isn’t just about politics for Trudeau.

And then the next step is scrapping the carbon tax for everyone, everywhere in Canada.

It’s the only fair way to stop punishing people for driving to work, growing and buying food, and heating their homes in the winter.

Is Halloween a religious or now only a secular event? Originally it was an occasion to remember the dead especially the departed Hallows i.e., Saints or dead leaders. It is coincidental that the end of October is closely followed by Remembrance Day which to my mind is the most important and for some the most sacred day of the year - if that is your wont.

Halloween as meaningless and a waste of time but on occasion would

bring home a large cow-approved turnip or rutabaga. Attempts to turn this into a lantern required adult help and supervision plus a hammer and chisel – such a waste of food – we had never heard of pumpkins. The smell of burned turnip was unique and memorable from the lit candle placed therein.

Groups of children would go from door-todoor chanting “trick or treat’. This was regarded as totally scurrilous and impudent and was unapproved of by my father. “Trick” by the way was a threat which included throwing stones at windows. A few children dressed up which

was known as “guising” or disguising. All children were supposed to sing a song or recite a poem before they received a treat. Apparently, my wife enjoyed this, but it scarcely ever happens here. The Scots and Irish immigrants brought Halloween to North America in the late nineteenth century and spread it to other parts of the world. The activity is not inexpensive but makes children happy despite rotting their teeth.

I have been trying to listen to and understand the debate over heat pumps and carbon tax in parliament and conclude that few if any know what

What we are going to do is continue to offer $2 billion in affordability measures for Saskatchewan people. What we are going to do, Mr. Speaker, is to ensure that we fight for families living in the city of Regina, the city of Saskatoon, wherever they live, Mr. Speaker, ensure that we are fighting for fairness for those Saskatchewan families.”

When Question Period ended, a motion under Rule 61 against the federal decision was introduced by the new NDP member for Regina Walsh Acres, Jared Clarke, which read: “That the Assembly express its deep concern over the unfair decision by the Government of Canada to allow oil used for home heating to be exempt from the federal carbon tax, while offering no relief to families in Saskatchewan who rely on natural gas; and That the Assembly expresses deep concern over the divisive comments made by the Minister of Rural Economic Development, the Honourable Gudie Hutchings, on October 28th, 2023, in which she blames Canadians living on the prairies for the unfair choices of the Liberal government; and That the Assembly calls on all parties in the Parlia-

ment of Canada to work quickly to remove the federal carbon tax from all forms of home heating for all Canadians.”

Mr. Clarke: — “Thank you, Mr. Speaker, and thank you to the members for granting leave…

Saskatchewan people are looking to the government to do their part in reducing emissions in this province in a way that is thoughtful and makes sense on the prairies. Saskatchewan New Democrats are committed to doing that. However Saskatchewan people haven’t seen that from this government and they haven’t seen it from the federal government. But it is clear, Mr. Speaker, the carbon tax is not the answer that Saskatchewan people want to address climate change.

And I agree with them. We, Saskatchewan New Democrats, agree with them. We do not support the federal carbon tax.

It was with great dismay this weekend that we learned that the federal government, after seeing their plummeting polling results in the Maritimes, have introduced measures to suspend the carbon tax on home heating oil in Atlantic Canada. Where is the fairness in this decision, Mr. Speaker? Saskatchewan people also need to heat their homes.

Why won’t they see relief in this affordability crisis?

It is ridiculous that the federal government would set this scenario up which now pits region against region in our great country.”

The Minister of Crown Investments Corporation Hon. Dustin Duncan stood to respond, and to offer an amendment which read as follows: That all the words after “unfair choices of the Liberal government; and,” be replaced with: That this Assembly supports the Premier of Saskatchewan’s plan to scrap the carbon tax on everything for everyone; That if the Liberal-NDP coalition government refuses to scrap the carbon

exempted from the carbon tax; and further, That if none of the above is implemented by the Liberal- NDP coalition, that this Assembly supports the,Government of Saskatchewan’s plan to not collect and remit the carbon tax on SaskEnergy bills beginning January 1st, 2024.

Hon. Mr. Duncan: — “Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, last week the Trudeau government announced a three-year exemption of the carbon tax for home heating oil. This exemption will primarily benefit families in Atlantic Canada where a greater percentage of households use heating oil compared to the rest of the country.

The Trudeau-Singh coalition have effectively admitted that two of the myths that they have been spreading about the carbon tax are untrue. The first myth is that the carbon tax is affordable and that Canadians will get more in rebates than they pay in carbon taxes. If that were true, Mr. Speaker, then there would be no reason for the federal government to provide this exemption as an affordability measure. The second myth is that this is a tax that is being applied fairly in all areas of the country based on a set rate per tonne of greenhouse gas, GHG, emissions.

Heating oil, it should be noted, Mr. Speaker, is primarily used in one part of the country and has higher GHG emissions than other sources, heat sources like natural gas which most Saskatchewan people use to heat their homes.

The federal government has effectively chosen to make life more affordable for families in one part of the country while leaving Saskatchewan families out in the cold. In Atlantic Canada, 40 per cent of households use heating oil to heat their homes compared to just 0.4 per cent of Saskatchewan households.

As we know, Mr. Speaker, natural gas is our primary source of home heating in Saskatchewan with 85 per cent of households having

The new speaker is as useless as the last one allowing non -answers and deafening pandemonium.

Heat pumps extract heat from cold air and inject it into your house – figure that out — and work much better in reverse. They are expensive, run on electricity and in cold areas will probably obviate your house insurance unless you have a backup system. Carbon tax relief, increased rebates and installation help is being offered but the programs are confusing, not universal and are splitting the

country.

According to Mr. Trudeau and his automata the heat pump program demonstrates the value and flexibility of carbon tax and helps the environment. Carbon tax is a pollution deterrent therefore you don’t reduce it - you make alternatives more attractive. Removing and reducing the carbon tax is tantamount to admitting that there is a problem and is absolute Halloween candy for “Axe the Tax” Pierre Poilievre and strips Mr. Trudeau of any hope of hallowed remembrance.

The furore over heat pumps and carbon tax may prove sufficiently pyrogenic to extinguish the current government.

How is that for a nonsequitur mixed metaphor wish?

Nominations are open for 2024 Order of Merit Submitted

Nominations of citizens for the Saskatchewan 2024 Order of Merit are now being accepted.

“The Saskatchewan Order of Merit allows us to honour outstanding citizens who have truly made our province a better place to live,” Lt.-Gov. Russ Mirasty said. “If you know someone who is worthy of this prestigious honour, I encourage you to nominate them.”

The Saskatchewan Order of Merit was established in 1985 to celebrate excellence and achievement by Saskatchewan

citizens. To date, 272 individuals have been invested with the Order in appreciation of their significant contributions in areas such as agriculture, business, industry, community leadership, public service, art, research, and volunteering. The Saskatchewan Order of Merit is recognized in the Canadian Honours System and members of the Order are entitled to use the post-nominal letters SOM. Nominees must be current or former long-term residents of Saskatchewan.

Any individual or group can submit a nomination, but the nomination must

be for an individual, not an organization. Posthumous nominations are accepted within one year of an individual’s date of death.

The recipients of the 2024 Saskatchewan Order of Merit will be invested by the lieutenant governor at a ceremony next year.

Nominations will be accepted until Nov. 30. Online nominations are encouraged, but nominations will also be accepted by mail, courier or in-person.

Rebate, grant for new home builders SASKTODAY.ca

Government of Saskatchewan has announced details of the Provincial Sales Tax (PST) Rebate for New Home Construction and the Secondary Suite Incentive (SSI) grant program.

According to a press release the program is designed to help homeowners with rising costs, promote new home construction and increase the availability of rental units.

The programs are administered by the Ministry of Finance. Those participating in the PST Rebate for New Home Construction may also be eligible for the SSI grant program. Combined, the grant program and rebate will provide qualifying homeowners with up to $46,340 in cost savings.

The PST Rebate for New Home Construction provides a rebate of up to 42 per cent of the PST

paid on the purchase of a newly constructed home.

The rebate applies to contracts signed with builders, or new housing starts completed retroactive to, or after, April 1, 2023.

The new homes must be occupied by April 1, 2026, and rebate applications must be received by March 31, 2027.

The rebate is available for homes with a total price of less than $550,000 before taxes and excluding the value of the land and price of any furniture, furnishings, and appliances, with some exceptions.

The percentage of the rebate is reduced for homes with a total price between $450,000 and $550,000.

The new SSI grant program will provide 35 per cent of the cost to build

a new secondary suite at an owner’s primary residence, to a maximum grant of $35,000 per qualifying property.

The qualifying secondary suite must be on the property of a singlefamily home (e.g., basement suite, garden suite, laneway home, or garage suite) and include a separate entrance, full kitchen and full bathroom and meet all national, provincial, and municipal bylaws, codes and standards to be used as a rental unit.

Costs of renovating an existing secondary suite or the primary residence are not eligible.

The SSI will be open to qualifying properties incurring eligible costs retroactive to April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2026, to accommodate projects that have already been initiated. Final applications must be submitted by March 31, 2027.

Sarge, the missing gelding near Senlac, located after 21 days

10 years, Adrienne Wolf, took to Facebook instantly.

With cash rewards offered, the posts had started to be shared amongst horse enthusiasts all over Saskatchewan. Whitehouse was doing all that she could near Senlac to find her beloved horse, enlisting the help from a crop dusting pilot and a friend with a drone.

It is estimated she put in close to 100 hours looking for her four-legged hooved friend.

“There was a huge amount of support from Senlac and the surrounding communities. We had people looking from all over the area. Alison would even go to Unity and Macklin and talk to the local guys to make sure they knew about Sarge,” said Wolf.

On Oct. 26, Becky was just finishing lunch at the Senlac Café when she received a call from Mark Headrick, who lives east

of Senlac. He happened to see a horse rolling around in the ditch not far from his home and called Becky right away.

“I dropped everything in that moment and drove to where Mark said he was.

He was holding Sarge by the blanket to make sure he was not going anywhere else when I got there,” said Becky.

Before long, other Senlac farmers came to the aid of the horse. Ken Mur-

rell came with grain and a rope and Jim Cooper had stopped to help, informing the rescuers that his son, Ash, was not far behind with a trailer. The horse was loaded up into the Cooper’s trailer until Middleton’s husband, Doug, was able to retrieve the animal and safely transport it back to their farm.

Wolf said “Sarge is in really good shape considering he has been on the run for 21 days. The Middletons had secured him well once they got him home. Doug even added more boards to make sure

he doesn’t go anywhere else.”

Sarge was still wearing his blanket, in perfect condition. The only scratch on him was a small scar on his nose. Wolf said she was impressed with how kind everyone was during this ordeal. The Coopers, who run a large herd of horses, were checking on a regular basis to make sure Sarge didn’t end up coming home with them. Whitehouse came back on Oct. 27 to pick up her companion, thankful for everyone who helped in bringing Sarge home.

Joshua Middleton and girlfriend Alison Whitehouse came to the Middleton farm for a visit three weeks ago and never expected a turn for the worst.

The couple came from Calgary to the farm where parents Doug and Becky Middleton still reside.

Whitehouse decided to bring her nine-year-old quarterhorse, Sarge, along for the trip to tour the scenic prairie land near Senlac. As a vet tech, Whitehouse brought all the essentials she needed for Sarge, including blankets and stock panels for housing the horse.

On the morning of Oct. 5, Whitehouse realized Sarge had disappeared during the night. The stock panels had been knocked over and based on the evidence left behind, the Middetons suspected moose had done the damage, spooking Sarge to the point he fled the scene.

The biggest concern with the missing equine was he still had a blanket on him. This could be dangerous because it could get hung up on broken trees, entangling the animal so he would not be able to feed or water. Whitehouse had been looking with help from the Middletons for 10 hours before reaching out for online help.

involved in a fat quarter draw, where members could bring fall coloured fat quarters. The lucky recipient winning close to 30 fat quarters was Pat. The next meeting will feature red and black fat quarters in honour of Remembrance Day. A fat quarter shuffle class was taught Oct. 19 with lots of ladies attending and lots of variation in fabrics and ideas.

Many members attended the Saskatoon Quilt Show Oct. 27 and 28. A wide array of beautiful quilts was on display, there were vendors galore and lots of mini classes to check out.

A zipper quilt class was hosted Oct. 30, with many attending.

There’s a retreat coming up on Nov. 15, 16 and 17. There will be an exchange of coloured fabric strips for strip poker which will be discussed at the next meeting. This is a chance to visit, work on mystery quilts or whatever members choose and to see what others are working on.

We have a lot of comfort quilts in the cupboard which will be used for Battlefords Early Years Family Resource, baby quilts and St. Joseph’s lap quilts for seniors. With Christmas coming up there’s always a need for these quilts.

We have a new Facebook page for our members and the general public to check out - River’s Edge Quilters. It features beauti-

ful pictures of quilts, news about the members are working on and great ideas.

Last year we received a grant from Sask Energy for Share the Warmth program. We bought quilting supplies for the guild. We hope to receive the same grant or more to continue to give back to our commu-

Diyet discovered her voice singing on the school bus in the Yukon.

Though she’d left her hometown, acquired a degree in music, and jumpstarted a career in Vancouver, her website says that she was drawn back home.

“When the pull of the North was too strong, she packed her bags, and her Dutch husband, moving back to her village of 90 people without a plan or even a pub to play in.”

Now, after extensive

touring in Canada and internationally, the production of award-winning albums, Diyet, her husband Robert van Lieshout, and producer Bob Hamilton (forming the Love Soldiers) bring a blend of alternative country, folk, roots and traditional music with her native Southern Tutchone language and stories to the Battlefords on Nov. 3.

And as she sings in both English and Southern Tutchone while playing bass guitar, Diyet and the Love Soldiers create a unique sound showcasing

Vibrant creations in ink and tile

“Art is the silent expression of thoughts, feelings and experiences.” — Marilyn O. Pam Beaver and Linda Hauk hosted two classes for beginners working with alcohol ink on ceramic tile Tuesday, Oct 24 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

First, they showed participants how to apply ink colours to the tile, then

the different methods to move the ink around on the tile using hair blowers, puffers and straws.

Next, one blows the ink into the design you wish, blending the colours you applied to create a spectacularly vibrant abstract painting.

Participants were pleasantly surprised with the beautiful art they created, and they commented on the enjoyment and satisfaction of the workshop.

Each year since 1994, except once during the pandemic, the Battlefords & District Chamber of Commerce together with its Battlefords Business Excellence Awards committee has honored excellence in the local business community. For the 29th time, business excellence is being recognized again, November 8th, 2023 with awards presented in several categories.

The committee works throughout the year to garner nominations and business applications, along with planning for the awards gala and the actual awards themselves. The category awards have always been a treasured piece of art from a local artisan. In the beginning years of the program, Stan Wychopen, master craftsman from Battleford, hand-made miniature desks for each award recipient. Each year the style of desk was unique and the work was exquisite, with drawers that opened, roll-tops that rolled up, and doors that opened. The last year Stan participated was in 2006, when he constructed a replica of the original Chamber of Commerce building in the community. They are amazing pieces of work and a treasure for anyone who received one. Since then, awards have included original oil paintings, wood turned vases, bronze statuettes, stained glass works, digital photos mounted on metal and in 2022 award winners received a one of a kind, alcohol ink with mandala’s pieces of artwork.

Meota and District News

Major strides in earth moving at marina development

The construction of the marina development to the west of town has slowed down from being a major earth moving project to slower winter-related projects. They have relocated more than 100,000 yards of dirt to date. Darrel Niedermaier and Pat Urlacher have spearheaded the construction with site manager Tyler Niedermaier since it’s inception.

The marina is designed to be 300 metres long by 20 metres wide. There will be only one central boat access to the marina. The boat slips will be paired with a central access pier per pair.

Excavation and construction of the marina is scheduled for the first part of January. This late date is to provide for soil stability and to prevent moisture seepage from the lake. A general recreation area will feature beach volleyball, basketball court, pickleball court, a picnic site and a splash park playground for the younger group. There are thoughts being given to a site for a farmers market and a deli/service station complex.

The 194 slips in the marina are to be sold as first rights of refusal as per lot

ownership. If the lot owners choose not to purchase their slips an application list is being compiled which will be prioritized for new purchase rights. A model home which in now in the early stage of construction, will be open for viewing sometime in 2024.

Upper and lower roads are under construction and are expected to see a lot of golf cart traffic. The marina cement walls are to be precast in North Battleford and anchored in place with piles driven in place. Enquire at tyler@www.rvmestates.ca for more details.

Cochin Community Players welcomes patrons to its 2023 fall dinner theatre production of Ivan Menchell’s The Cemetery Club.

Assisted by Bill Baker, Jim Walls directs this romantic comedy, in which

he stars with Roxanne Irvine, Charlotte Lockwood-Baker, Claudette McGuire and Bernadette Provost.

The plot features three Jewish widows who meet once a month for tea before going to visit their husbands’ graves. Ida is ready to begin a new life; Lucille just wants to have fun; and Doris is priggish and judgmental, particularly when Sam enters the scene. He meets the widows while visiting his wife’s grave.

Doris and Lucille squash the budding romance between Sam and Ida. They are guilt-stricken when this nearly breaks Ida’s heart.

The heartwarming play was made into a 1993 film starring Ellen Burstyn, Dianne Ladd and Olympia Dukkakis.

Cochin dinner theatre productions run Friday and Saturday, Nov. 24 and 25, and Thursday, Nov. 30 to Saturday, Dec. 2.

Brunch productions are Sunday, Nov. 26 and Sunday, Dec. 3. All performances are in the community hall. Tickets are $50 each and include a delicious meal prepared

Volleyball season winding down

Many of you taking bets on if the snow will stay.

Within a few miles, there are varying amounts. It is getting fairly late in October so no surprise if winter has decided to settle in the next five months or so.

Bone-chilling winds are always unpleasant Volleyball is coming to the end of the season shortly. The junior boys at Maymont Central School pulled off a victory in the tournament the school hosted last Monday. The school was bustling with the four teams that entered bringing in many spectators to cheer the boys on. Thanks

to their coach Ryan Nickell (teacher) who also coaches other school sports.

An oversight on my part in the report I submitted to last week’s paper on the spectacular haunted house near Meeting Lake. Linda Price’s three granddaughters helped out extensively with setting up the props, volunteering to work during the viewings and taking down displays Oct. 15.

Most of all, think of all the fun they had. A job well done girls — Jordan Price; Rylee Price and Abby Swistun. Some of the funds from the gate volunteer donations are going to Spiritwood Travel Club, not Spiritwood’s High School Travel Club.

4-H clubs are starting up again this fall. One can always Google a town to check on what projects are available. This is not only for farm children and it is an educational program under the instruction of many dedicated leaders.

There is a fall supper at Medstead Hall Nov. 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. Cost is $15 for adults; 12 years and under $10 and preschoolers free.

This is a fundraiser for curling rink repairs.

A craft fair and market will be held Saturday, Nov. 4 at Medstead School. One can also register children for a skating club during the craft fair. Call 306-3424988 for more information.

A heck of a show was put on by Shantaia from Nashville, Tenn. and her first cousin Brody Siebert at Coors Event Centre in Saskatoon last Wednesday evening. They sang their hearts out to many fans, including locals from the Spiritwood and Leoville area. Did I attend?

Of course, I did with a friend and the only problem was limited seating.

Shantaia was fortunate to use Brody’s four-member band who are talented musicians. She sang some of her originals along with other country songs. Brody’s performances were mostly rock ‘n roll. The Poulin and Siebert families were excitedly welcoming many people in attendance.

Grandmother Bernice Tiringer from Spiritwood is extremely proud of these two artists.

The Goldenaires Club in Hafford has a busy schedule not just for seniors but open to anyone. There is bingo every Tuesday at 7 p.m. with card prices of $10, $12 and $14. The jackpot is $500 in 53 numbers.

Kaiser with a fee of $5 is hosted Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. Both activities are at the seniors’ centre.

Monday is floor curling at 1 p.m. starting Nov. 20 at the Communiplex. Brighten up those dreary “blah” dull cold days by joining in the fun.

Congregations of two local viable churches pass on a big thank you for the money raised at a concert featuring Doug Sylvester and Jeff Arndt at Mayfair Hall two weeks ago.

A bull riding event was hosted Oct. 7 by Spiritwood Area Recreation Culture

and Sport. This was held indoors at their Rec Centre.

Ed Sazsz, the lead committee organizer, works extensively throughout the year to lay the groundwork for this Silver Bull Riding Competition. The winning bull rider was Cody Koverchuk from Meadow Lake area. He edged out others from as far away as Australia, Montana and various places in western Canada.

Cody’s final ride earned an impressive 87 score. The evening ended with 400 people at the cabaret with music by Saskatchewan country artist Lisa Moen.

MCCONNELL: Mrs. Annie “Anne” McConnell passed away Saturday, October 14, 2023, at the age of 97years. A Mass of Christian Burial took place on Saturday, October 21, 2023, held at St. Boniface Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Peter Paase as celebrant.

Interment followed at the St. Boniface Roman Catholic Cemetery. This position is responsible to provide afterhours emergency services to families including investigation of child abuse/neglect referrals; assess risk for child safety; determine involvement and safety plans for families in crisis; and transportation where required. SOCIAL WORKER: Keyanow periodically hires Family Service Worker/Child Protection workers with a Bachelor of Social Work or Bachelor of Indigenous Social Work. Casual employees replace regular employees who are absent from work; therefore, the pay level for each casual shift may vary.

The Borden Friendship Club held their monthly potluck supper Thursday, Oct. 26 with more than 50 in attendance. There was a great variety of food to sample and birthday cake to enjoy for dessert. The tables and centre were nicely decorated with a fall/Halloween theme with mini, coloured gourds, vases of fall flowers and candy dishes filled with suckers and mini bars around the centrepieces set on bronze napkins. Celebrating birthdays in October were G. Abbott, Angelina Lukan, Sheila Block, Tom Popoff, Elvira LaChappelle, Stew Walton and Peter Thiessen, but only Peter was on hand

to blow out the candle. Taking the stage for the entertainment was the Putt Putt Garage Band from Borden, with Russ and Jeff McBain and Jamie Brandrick playing guitars, Andrew Hess playing drums and Kendall Redhead on vocals and playing castanets.

Oct. 27 there was a Flu/ COVID clinic in the Community Centre from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with many dropping in to get their shots.

At noon the Friendship Club held a fall tea, with a Halloween theme for the decorations, serving pie and ice cream along with beverages to 45 people, by donation. Thanks to the generosity of those attending the proceeds of $365 will be donated to the

Borden Care Home. There were many door prizes brought by the members and these were all handed out to attendees.

The Friendship Club Christmas dinner is Thursday, Dec. 7, in the Community Centre and it will be catered to by the Langham United Church. The deadline for members and guests to let Bev Assman or Lorraine Olinyk know and pay for their meal ($15 for members and $20 for non) is Nov. 23.

Coming up in Borden in November is the fire and rescue steak supper Nov. 4 in the Community Centre and a raffle for pork and a barbecue will be drawn that night. Tickets for supper are $25 from any firefighter.

Monday, Nov. 6 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. St. John’s Anglican Church will be holding a soup, bun and dessert luncheon, by donation, in the church lower hall. Proceeds will be going to the Borden Ministerial Fund which helps out the needy at Christmas.

Music nights are Nov. 8 in Radisson at the Goodrich Centre at 7:30 p.m. and at Borden Nov. 18 at the Seniors’ Centre at 7 p.m.

Radisson Seniors host bingo nights at their cen-

tre Nov. 6 and 20 at 7 p.m. and Borden Seniors’ bingo starts Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to these bingos.

Nov. 11, the Borden Lions are hosting a Remembrance Day service in the Community Centre, starting at 10:45 a.m. sharp and there is lunch to follow.

Nov. 15, the health centre hosts a health talk on the risk of falling, starting at 1:30 p.m.

Nov. 25 is Radisson Seniors’ Club pancake breakfast from 9 -11 a.m. and the Borden Farmers’ Market

Peter Thiessen was the lone October birthday celebrant on hand to blow out the cake candles at the Borden Friendship Club potluck supper Oct. 26.

Christmas sale is that Saturday (25) from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Community Centre with many vendors booked. Lunch will be available in the Seniors’ Room sold by the Borden High School students so support local enterprise and get your Christmas shopping done early.

This year’s Thanksgiving Day was a special celebration for one family when five generations gathered together. Vera Valliere of Paynton, her daughter Carol Newsted of Maidstone, Carol’s daughter Chelene Freyman of Maidstone and Chelene’s daughter Kaelin Kisling of Saskatoon with her baby Archer shared their love and gratitude Oc. 7 at Carol and Andy Newsted’s home in Maidstone. It’s a rare and heartwarming occasion to see a family of five generations.

Wednesday, Oct. 25, Maidstone Library held a come-and-go tea honouring Lorna Foster. Lorna started as a library assistant in October of 1993 and became librarian in Maidstone when Joyce Weston retired.

Congratulations and thank you for 30 years

with the Lakeland Library Region, Lorna. Library patrons in our community appreciate Lorna’s service through the years and look forward to seeing her for many more.

Congratulations to the following volleyball teams for their wins at districts.

Maidstone Huskies Junior A Boys’ team are the new North West District Champions. They won nine of 10 sets and beat Paradise Hill in two sets in the gold medal match. The senior boys’ team also won gold in the consolation side at North Battleford Comprehensive High School. The junior girls’ team finished their season with a silver medal.

Maidstone Legion Club Room’s first Chase the Ace winner was Pat Armstrong of Maidstone who picked the four of Hearts and won $131. The jackpot remains at $3,000 and draws will continue weekly all season.

Despite the snowy

weather last Friday, Maidstone Museum’s Spook Night had an amazing turnout. It was an entertaining evening with some super spooky displays.

Thank you to Eileen Anderson for organizing the event, all the “spooks” who haunted the museum, to Hayley, Christina, Kali, Deb, Helaynea and John for all your help with decorating, and to Elise for donating a speaker system for the night.

As Remembrance Day approaches, be proud to wear a poppy in honour of those who gave their lives to serve our country as well as those who are currently serving in times of war, conflict and peace.
