BATTLEFORDS — Battlefords MLA and Saskatchewan Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill shared his thoughts with SaskToday on some of the highlights of 2025 he is glad to see moving ahead. One of the highlights of 2025 has been the introduction of the Saskatchewan Marshals Service in the Battlefords region. “We have the first three officers commissioned just in the last couple weeks here,” Cockrill said. “It’s nice to see the marshals

really getting set up in our area to support the RCMP and our community safety officers, as well as all the other RCMP specialized teams that operate in our community, in our region. Any time we can have more boots on the ground, that’s a really positive thing for our community.” Cockrill said having the Marshals Service in the area helps get criminals off the streets and makes people feel safer in the community. The Saskatchewan Marshals Service office in the Battlefords is still being established. Continued on page 2

NORTH BATTLEFORD — It’s been a busy year for policing and crime prevention in the Battlefords in 2025. Battlefords RCMP Insp. Ryan How said in an interview with SaskToday that crime numbers are down as a positive sign. “We’re pleased to see that the crime numbers are

still decreasing, but we’re always cautious,” How said. “We’re always cautious with that, because we want to make sure the community feels safe first and foremost. So if we see a decrease in the stats, we also want to hear from our citizens and the people that we serve, that they’re feeling more safe and secure in their community. We fully recognize that we still have a ways to go, so we don’t rely on statistics

completely.” He credited the work of the Gang Task Force for helping tackle crime in the community. “We’ve had some really tremendous successes through the year, specifically our Gang Task Force,” How said. “They’ve done excellent work doing exactly what they’re supposed to do, disrupting violent and prolific offenders.” Continued on page 2

Marshals, drug court, road safety among 2025 highlights in Battlefords Continued from page 1 “We don’t have a permanent location in the Battlefords yet, but there is a temporary location at the Eagle’s Landing development while a permanent location is found,” Cockrill said. Another initiative Cockrill said he is pleased to see underway is the Drug Treatment Court in North Battleford. “We had that event [announcement] early in the summer,” he said. “The

Drug Treatment Court, which is already operating in Regina and Moose Jaw, now is [in] the Battlefords and providing individuals another pathway to recovery rather than incarceration.” He said the Drug Treatment Court is part of a recovery-oriented system of care. “Ensuring that people in this province who are suffering from addictions have the opportunity to get better, and really focusing on recovery, and making sure that peo-

ple can be healed from their addictions, then go back to being part of their family and part of their community, that’s really a big focus for us,” Cockrill said. “So, having the Drug Treatment Court open in the Battlefords is a key step forward in that way.” Among the projects the MLA said he is proud to see start is work to establish several new highway turning lanes in the Battlefords. Right-hand turning lanes were constructed on High-

way 4 at both 22nd Street and 29th Street in Battleford. As well, another turning lane was created at the Cargill intersection on Highway 16 coming into North Battleford. “What that just does is it makes traffic safer,” Cockrill said. “We have big trucks turning in and out of any of these intersections. It’s really just an opportunity to get them out of the travelling lanes and reduce accidents, and certainly try to avoid fatalities.”

Continued from page 1 The Crime Reduction Team has also been a key part of policing in the Battlefords, he said. “The Crime Reduction Team from the area has been equally as productive, as they support the detachment specifically on more violent calls and projects in the region as well, not just in the city,” How said. “Our members are doing their best to put professional investigations before the courts.” He noted that these investigations help the police deal with prolific offenders. “We’ve also spent some time when we’re able to

suppress property crime, and we’re seeing a reduction in property crime offences,” How said. How also encouraged the public to report all property crime that happens in the community. One of the new initiatives the Battlefords RCMP started in 2025 was targeted night patrols. “Night patrols are always something that police always do in every community, but these are dedicated, as resources allow, to target areas that are suffering from higher rates of property crime,” How said. “Again, we encourage the public to report property crime be-

cause our analysts create what we call heat maps, and show us exactly where the highest rates of property crime are happening.” He said the police then focus their officers in those areas in the middle of the night when most property crime is happening. “We have them on foot and on bikes, and have them able to take a tactical advantage so they can see and hear what’s going on around them, rather than being in a vehicle,” How said. The local RCMP have also stepped up downtown policing in North Battleford in 2025. “We drastically increased

our foot patrols and our presence in the downtown area,” How said. “We tried to do it through a compassionate lens, knowing that people are suffering from complex needs, but we also wanted to maintain a minimum standard of behaviour down there. I really commend the partnerships from the local businesses and the City of North Battleford. They do understand the limits for policing in that area, and are really trying to find new and creative ways to manage some of the complex issues in the downtown core. I think towards the end of the year we started seeing some successes.”

North Battleford Mayor reflects on 2025 successes By Angela Brown SaskToday.ca

NORTH BATTLEFORD — The year 2025 has been a busy one for the City of North Battleford in achieving several goals. Mayor Kelli Hawtin said in an interview with SaskToday the city has had a number of successes she is pleased with. “Strategic pillars have a strong focus on economic development, community well-being, and infrastructure, governance and partnerships,” she said. “So the work we’ve done throughout 2025 has been to align with our strategic plan.” “In terms of economic development, we made some revisions to our Official Community Plan and our zoning bylaws, with a goal of allowing more flexibility for business growth,” Hawtin added. She also noted that development permits have been slightly higher for the year. Another goal the city has

focused on has been growing assessment in the city, to be able to continue to provide services for city residents and the region. “In the economic development side of things I think we’ve progressed,” said Hawtin. The city was also pleased with approving the largest land sale value in the history of North Battleford with the sale of some land to Mosquito Grizzly Bear’s Head Lean Man First Nation this past summer. “I think we’ve got some good momentum going there in economic development,” said Hawtin. In terms of community well-being, one of the highlights has been securing funding for a coordinator role for the city’s Community Safety and Well-being Plan. The city has also enhanced safety initiatives downtown by including targeted police foot patrols. “We’re trying to enhance safety in the downtown,”

said Hawtin. “I think that largely has went over fairly well. We’re going to continue to build on that as well.” She noted there have been some staffing shortages with the RCMP and Community Safety Officers in 2025. “We’ve been up against a bit of a challenge in terms of policing resources for the city,” Hawtin said. “But I think we’ve managed to maintain a level of service that our residents expect. We are starting to see those staffing vacancies reduced.” In other news in 2025, the proposed regional arena project is advancing. “We did a feasibility study for fundraising that’s been completed,” Hawtin said. “We’re currently designing a campaign for a fundraising launch in the spring of 2026. Our regional communities have been really working closely together to shape an ownership and operating model. We’re optimistic that we’ll have a concept early in 2026 from the regional community leaders to consider.”

Candidates announced for North Battleford by-election By SaskToday staff NORTH BATTLEFORD–The City of North Battleford has announced the official List of candidates confirmed for the 2026 municipal by-election in North Battleford. The final date for candidates to file their nomination packages to run in the upcoming election was Dec. 17. The full list of candidates vying for a vacant city councillor position in North Battleford has now

been confirmed. The city’s Returning Officer advises the following individuals will be on the ballot for the by-election scheduled for Jan. 21, 2026: • Gail Feser, • Mercy George, • Donald Meriam, • Daniel Suberlak, • Alan Wiese. Mail-in ballot applications for eligible voters who are unable to physically attend any polls are now available until Jan. 20, 2026.

Voters wishing to attend polls in person may do so at two advance polls–on Jan. 14, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Jan. 17, 2026, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Polls will be open on election day, Jan. 21, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. All polls will be located at the Chapel Gallery in North Battleford. If anyone has any questions about voter eligibility, they can contact the city’s Returning Officer by calling city hall at 306-445-1700.

New sidewalk, turning lanes among highlights of 2025 for town By Angela Brown SaskToday.ca

BATTLEFORD–With 2025 wrapping up, Town of Battleford Mayor Ames Leslie said he is pleased to see a number of projects get completed. One of the projects that helped improve community safety was the 22nd Street sidewalk replacement, from 1st Avenue to 2nd Avenue. “That project went over very well. Making that sidewalk safer for the business folks and the residents was a nice accomplishment...,” said Leslie “This is just another part of that commitment to make the town of Battleford more walkable and more safe while people are walking.” Another initiative, the mayor is glad to see move ahead is the pavement of Third Avenue, off of 35th

Street. “That’s a project that we’ve been working to get done for quite a few years,” Leslie said. “It’s just the road was really bad and there were some drainage issues. They were able to get some sewer work done at the same time as the pavement of the street. So, it was some good work done by all the departments to align and get the services, and the work done at the same time. It saves money when those projects can align like that and teams work together.” The mayor was also happy to have two new turning lanes installed in Battleford. Right-hand turning lanes were added at Highway 4, both at 22nd Street and 29th Street. “For the Ministry of Highways to add the two righthand turning lanes into the

Ho ho ho–it is my favourite time of year! From one fellow gardener to another, I can think of endless gifts to bring to those gardeners who have been good all year long....... Gardeners who have been good, put the garden to bed before the snow arrived. Part of that chore was to ensure that all were watered in prior to freeze up and of course any late blooming weeds were removed. The best gardeners have hung up all their tools clean and shiny. They have cleaned off any soil that might be still hanging around and lightly oiled the working parts and of course those wooden handles as well. Keeping the handles lightly sanded if they are worn and then oiled will ensure in the spring that those tender garden hands do not get slivers. All those other handy gardening tools like secateurs should be cleaned, sharpened and oiled. We often have nice warm spells in early spring where it is the perfect time to tidy up our woody ornamentals with a bit of pruning.

Have your tools ready for action once the weather warms. Gardeners whom I love to gift make that transition from the outside garden to the inside garden with grace. I know one fine gardener on my favourite list has hung grow lights in her house where she merrily grows fresh herbs. These favourites of chefs will not only keep your fingers “in the dirt” but will also help to prepare fabulous meals–even in the heart of winter. The scent that fills the air at watering time warms my cockles just dreaming of spring and getting out into the garden with my Mrs. Claus. You know that growing any little thing will help to keep away those winter blues! Winter is hard on us all– and for sure it is hard on all your houseplants. Take pity on them and give them a bit extra help to make it through the winter and rotate them through an area where you have conveniently placed a grow light. The light in our homes in the winter has no real intensity at all at this time of year. Combined with the dry air of winter, this low light does stress your plants and leads to ill health. Spider

mite infestations are prevalent so watch your plants for tiny webs and a general look of not robust health. For me, I need to put on my reading glasses to see the signs of these little critters in a well-lighted area! For those good gardeners, gifts are a plenty. Think of useful things that make gardening easier or better. Quality secateurs are always appreciated. An upgrade to grow lights is always appreciated as we never seem to have enough. Last but not least, books and more books and more books to give us appreciation of new ideas that can make our gardens even more beautiful and productive.
