Cool Splash Time on Canada Day
Expect evolving detours Staff Major Underground Pipes and Asphalt Replacement work began Tuesday on 100th Street in downtown North Battleford. The UPAR work is taking place on the 1100 block of 100th Street. There will also be work done on 12th Avenue between 99th and 100th Street.
In the first week, says City Hall, there will be some disruption to 11th Avenue, and traffic on Highway 4 from Battleford will be rerouted at the bottom of the hill. Water service disruptions are expected while the underground pipe work proceeds. The underground work is expected to take about
three weeks, with roadway reconstruction work to follow. City Hall says roadway reconstruction is expected to be completed by Sept. 13. Until then, the 1100 block of 100th Street will be closed to traffic but pedestrian access to businesses will remain open from the back alley.
Band Gets Back to Basics Yikes! The water is cold. There were plenty of activities to take part in Canada Day, including sandcastle building at Battlefords Provincial Park, and, of course, water sports. Others chose to head to Fort Battleford for crafts and cannon fire, while some took to their backyards. Whatever activity they chose, most Canadians enjoyed a happy Canada Day. Poundmaker band recently built weirs and put a fish basket out into the Battle River. The intent is to have it be available for use by anyone in the community. As the water flows through the trap, fish are caught in the basket made of willow branches. This basket is loose enough to let smaller fish through and strong enough to hold the fish that are “big enough to put in a frying pan.” See Page 6 for the story. Saskatchewan’s Lieutenant Governor the Honourable W. Thomas Molloy, O.C., S.O.M., passed away on July 2, 2019, losing his battle with pancreatic cancer. Molloy was installed as the 22nd Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan on March 21st, 2018. Molloy, a respected Saskatoon lawyer, negotiator,
and author, was renowned for his treaty-making and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. His work in the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement and the historic Nisga’a Final Agreement in British Columbia led to his investiture as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1996, and as a Member of the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in 2012.
