A four-week non-jury trial for a 34-year-old North Battleford woman charged in relation to the death of 25-year-old Tiki Laverdiere from Edmonton started Monday in Battleford Court of Queen’s Bench.

Danita Thomas is charged with kidnapping, first-degree murder, improperly interfering with a body and theft of a vehicle.

North Battleford Senior Crown Chris Browne and Prosecutor Charlotte Morden are trying the cases against all of the 10 accused in Laverdiere’s murder. Defence Erin Little of Saskatoon represents Thomas.

Justice Richard W. Elson of Saskatoon is presiding.

The trial is being held at the Dekker Centre in North Battleford due to renovations at the courthouse.

Laverdiere was reported missing to Battlefords RCMP on May 12, 2019. On June 10,

2019, RCMP announced that Laverdiere’s disappearance was the result of foul play and they would be investigating her disappearance as a homicide. On July 11, 2019, a police dog found Laverdiere’s remains in a rural area outside of North Battleford while RCMP were conducting a ground search.

Laverdiere was in Saskatchewan April 2019 for the funeral of 20-year-old Tristen Cook-Buckle on Thunderchild First Nation. His body was found burned in a vehicle near Vegreville, Alta., on April 5, 2019. Edmonton Police believe Cook-Buckle was murdered behind a house near 92 St. and 110 Ave. in Edmonton. His murder remains unsolved.

Ten people were charged with Laverdiere’s murder. Five have been sentenced.

In October 2021, Nikita Sandra Cook of Onion Lake Cree Nation was found guilty of first degree murder and sentenced to life with no chance of

City reaffirms commitment to new lights for water tower

North Battleford city council members have reaffirmed their commitment to keeping the water tower lit for all to see in the future.

“Yes, the city is committed to this project and we’re going to find the best solutions and spend as little as possible to get the best solution,” said Mayor David Gillan at Monday’s council meeting.

Gillan’s comments were in response to a presentation at Monday’s meeting from Yvonne Nyholt, who had previously cochaired the previous campaign in 2008-09 to replace the water tower lights.

“We must not let this icon go dark again, our Jewel of the North,” said Nyholt.

“Not only is it a great tourism site but it is a beacon of hope and joy to all of us.”

The future of the water tower lights had been a discussion point during the 2022 budget deliberations, when council was informed by City Manager Randy Patrick

parole for 25 years. In December 2021, Samuel Takakenew of Edmonton and North Battleford was sentenced to time served on a charge of accessory after the fact to murder. In January 2021, Charles St. Savard of Edmonton was sentenced to 14 months and 20 days for unlawful confinement. In May 2020, Brent Checkosis of North Battleford was sentenced to seven years in prison for accessory after the fact to murder, and Mavis Takakenew of North Battleford was handed an 18-month jail sentence for accessory after the fact to murder.

Trials remain for Jesse Sangster and Nicole Cook, both of Edmonton, Soaring Eagle Whitstone of Onion Lake Cree Nation, and Shayla Orthner of North Battleford.

They are all charged with kidnapping, first-degree murder, improperly interfering with a body and theft of a vehicle.

The charges against the remaining co-accused haven’t been proven in court.

Man in court over box of opioids in North Battleford. He made his first appearance in North Battleford Provincial Court Jan. 17.

According to the RCMP, police were called to a business on Railway Avenue in North Battleford on the morning of Jan. 14 following a report that a customer had brought in a box of parts which, upon opening, contained hundreds of hydromorphone pills.

Hydromorphine is an opioid. Caron was located and arrested soon after.

According to the RCMP, he had in his possession suspected LSD, methamphetamine and crack. The charges are yet to be proven.

Matters for a man facing trafficking and possession charges have been adjourned to next week in North Battleford Provincial Court.

The date of Jan. 27 at 11 a.m. has been set as the return date for Cody Caron, 38. Lawyers in the case appeared by phone before Judge Murray Pelletier Friday morning. Caron is remanded by consent to the Jan. 27 date.

It was also indicated during deliberations that a private donor had expressed interest in funding the lights replacement, but nothing has been announced as of yet.

For a potential lights replacement, Schafer told council he had talked to Calgary firm LED World again, who had supplied

the present lights, and to the engineering firm AECOM, who indicated a willingness to participate as a donation to the city.

The indication from council is they are looking at the most cost-effective way to replace the lights.

“We are looking at all options, whether it is LED or whatever type of lights are out there,” said Councillor Greg Lightfoot.

“There may be a way to do it for under the $200,000, but we’ll have to wait to get some quotes.”

Seven vehicle thefts Submitted by Battlefords RCMP

Battlefords RCMP responded to 377 calls for service from Wednesday, Jan. 19, through Tuesday, Jan. 25.

• Eight missing persons reported. Two missing person investigations are active.

- Darcy Roy, aged 15, has been reported missing.

He was last seen on Carlton Trail late in the afternoon of Jan. 22. There have been unconfirmed sightings in since on the Saulteaux First Nation. He is described as 5’3”, 140 lbs, with brown eyes and short brown hair. He was wearing a black hoodie, black sweats and a turquoise toque when last seen.

- Reyah Assiniboine, 14, reported missing, last seen on 18th Avenue in North Battleford on the early afternoon of Jan. 23. Some reported contact has been made with her in the city of North Battleford in the last two days, but her current whereabouts are not known. She is described as being slim, about 5’4” with medium length brown hair.

• Eight assault investigations.

- Several reports of a male assaulting a female in a parking lot on the north side of North Battleford shortly after 11 a.m. Jan. 19. The suspect was no longer on scene when police arrived. The victim was not co-operative with the investigation and did not have any visible injuries. A suspect has been identified through information attained from several witnesses and charges are currently pending against a 53-year-old male from the North Battleford area. Investigation is ongoing.

• Seven break and enter investigations.

- Two suspects arrested on scene after a reported break and enter in progress on the 1100 block of 98th Street in North Battleford shortly before 7 a.m. Jan. 21.

Both suspects were then found to be linked to a business break and enter on the 1400 block of 100th Street, which occurred a short time prior. Both accused were remanded into custody and made their first appearance in provincial court on Monday Jan. 24 charged with two counts of break and enter and one count of possession of stolen property.

- Break and enter to a residence on the 100 block of 26th Street in Battleford some time during the afternoon of Jan. 20.

- Report of a break and enter to a residence on the 400 block of 32nd Street in Battleford at 5:40 a.m. on Jan. 22. A 31-year-old woman was arrested on scene.

She was later released from custody and will make her first appearance in Provincial Court on Feb. 28 facing charges of break and enter and failing to comply with probation.

• Seven vehicle thefts.

- 29-year-old male arrested and charged after report of a stolen vehicle from the Cochin district in the early morning hours of Jan. 23. Accused located with vehicle on 100th Street in North Battleford later the same date.

Accused will make his first appearance in court on Feb. 28.

- White 2008 Ford Escape with Saskatchewan license 958LXU reported stolen from the Moosomin First Nation on the afternoon of Jan. 19.

- Grey 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe with Saskatchewan license 239 MKV reported stolen from St. Laurent Drive in North Battleford late in the evening of Jan. 21.

- A 15-year-old youth was arrested and facing charges of possession of stolen property after a Ford pick up was reported stolen from the 1300 block of 99th Street in North Battleford shortly after 8 a.m. on Jan. 25. The vehicle was recovered later the same morning and the youth was arrested without incident.

• 14 Mental Health Act investigations.

• Two traffic collisions.

• Three individuals charged with impaired driving.

• 22 various traffic charges.

BATC homeless shelter proposal tabled by council

A proposal from Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs to build a new homeless shelter at 971 - 104th St. will have to wait for another day.

North Battleford council had been scheduled to hear a presentation from BATC Monday in support of a discretionary use application to locate a homeless shelter adjacent to their Atoskewin Success Centre facility.

But that did not go ahead. Instead, Director of Corporate Services Jennifer Niesink told council BATC had asked to put a hold on their presentation and application.

Administration asked council to table the application until such time as it is brought back, either by the proponents or by administration.

It is the latest saga in BATC’s move into provid-

ing homeless shelter services in the Battlefords.

Their journey began Sept.

30 when they took over the operations of The Lighthouse at 962 - 102nd St. The shelter on 102nd took the name Miwasin Kikinaw, with BATC operating the shelter and leasing the building from The Lighthouse since that time.

But in a letter to the city earlier this month from BATC’s former director of operations Alexis Christensen, BATC indicated their tenancy had been due to end March 31 and they were interested in relocating Miwasin Kikinaw to the 104th Street location.

In correspondence to the city, BATC stated they were interested in purchasing the lot located north of their Atoskewin Success Centre building, and then add on to that structure. The existing building was to house program space and an industrial kitchen, while

the addition would include a dormitory for sleeping and showering.

A discretionary use application and council approval is required for this plan to go ahead. But the application received a swift thumbs-down from area residents. City administration received well over 100 letters of opposition to the proposed shelter.

Most of the responses cited concerns about crime, vandalism, loitering, safety and property values, as well as its proximity to seniors and a nearby daycare centre. The responses included two separate signed letters of opposition. One was signed by 123 people representing the local business community, while the other was a petition signed by 26 seniors on 104th Street.

The project did receive the endorsement of six BATC First Nation chiefs, who submitted a “unanimous” letter of support to the city.

In both BATC’s letter as well as the letter of support from the chiefs, it was noted BATC had looked into staying at their current Lighthouse location beyond March 31.

BATC’s correspondence stated they had expressed interest in buying the 102nd Street building, but “have had no response as of yet from The Lighthouse administration.”

In their letter of support, the BATC chiefs stated their tribal council had investigated buying the existing Lighthouse building, but “have concerns with the accessibility in the building for clients, as well as costs for renovations. Our staff at BATC and at Miwasin Kikinaw have shown passion, dedication and resiliency in moving the shelter into a place of programming and support.”

Council voted unanimously in favour of tabling the application.

Proof of vax policy

Wallet cards still allowed at city’s leisure facilities

After some initial talk from City Hall about phasing the practice out, the City of North Battleford says they will still accept wallet cards for proof of vaccination at city facilities.

The city had indicated at council earlier this month they were planning to phase out wallet cards as accepted proof, and move towards accepting QR codes for entry to facilities. According to a memo, posters had gone up at all recreation facilities stating the wallet cards were not going to be accepted as of Jan. 17.

But the city has decided not to implement the change at this time.

Council made it official at Monday’s meeting, as

they unanimously approved administration’s recommendation to continue to accept wallet cards as one of the approved proof of vaccination documents to enter city facilities.

City Manager Randy Patrick explained they had looked at making the change to a QR code policy to address concerns about people using improper ID. But Patrick said it came back that a switch “would impact far more people negatively, way more than we would be stopping coming in with wrong ID or wrong vaccination records.”

A memo from Director of Parks and Recreation Cheryl DeNeire, expanded further about the issues the city faced in making such a change.

DeNeire noted about 70 per cent of CUplex pa-

trons were using their wallet cards with ID. Of those, it was noted about half did not have an issue changing to a QR code system as they were already registered, but the rest did not have a Sask. Health record account set up.

Meanwhile, the galleries department was reporting that 95 per cent of visitors were showing wallet cards.

It was also noted Saskatoon, Prince Albert and Lloydminster accepted the SHA wallet cards in their facilities. Some user groups using city-owned facilities have more stringent requirements in place and those include the Dekker Centre, Twin Rivers Curling Club, the leased space at Don Ross Centre and the Battlefords North Stars.

In the end, DeNeire’s memo called for wallet

cards to continue to be accepted as one of the approved documents, citing “the range and number of people that would be negatively affected by this exclusion.”

While the decision to accept wallet cards was unanimous at council, there was still concern expressed by some councillors at the meeting about people being able to get around the proof of vax requirements.

Councillor Kent Lindgren noted many people “are finding a way to go around those policies to access our facilities.” He cited instances where people would enter facilities after commissionaires or volunteers leave the front doors.

In response, DeNeire pledged to address as many issues as possible.

Time to cure what ails Canada’s health-care systems

The need to reform Canada’s health-care systems has long been a hot topic of debate. After all, Canada is an easy target: It has one of the highest price tags among countries with universal health systems in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, but its performance has lagged for years.

The effect of the poor performance of Canada’s health-care systems on the lives of patients is bad enough, but now the lack of capacity is interfering with the daily lives of all Canadians. Indeed, the (re-) re-introduction of strict public health measures in several provinces in response to the Omicron wave has been repeatedly justified by our health systems’ lack of capacity.

So how do we fix them? On one side of the debate, there are those who believe throwing more money at the problem would be a miraculous cure. Unfortunately, several provincial premiers seem to be of this opinion, with their plea to substantially increase the Canadian health transfer.

And yet, health-care spending in Canada has increased at an average yearly pace of over seven per cent since 1975, without delivering better results for patients. In fact, 55 per cent of Canadians believe the additional amounts of money injected over the past decade have either had no effect at all or actually worsened their health-care system. At this point, spending even more taxpayer dollars would simply be placing our health systems on an artificial respirator.

On the flip side, there are those who want to give the country’s health systems room to breathe by expanding the role of entrepreneurs in the delivery of care. Such a structural reform could involve encouraging provinces to form more partnerships between public and private institutions, or even letting entrepreneurs run publicly funded hospitals.

Now, adopting a greater mix of public and private care would not equate to an Americanization of our health care. Allowing and even encouraging entrepreneurs to pick up the slack is no danger to the universality of Canada’s health-care systems. Rather, as many European countries know well, such a change would increase the accessibility of services families already pay for through their taxes and offer greater choice within the public system. As an added bonus, expanding the role of entrepreneurs would enable health authorities to make better use of the billions of dollars spent on health care every year.

Involving entrepreneurs in the delivery of health services is the next step toward more efficient systems that Canadians can truly be proud of – ones that encourage innovation and prioritize public-private partnerships rather than always resorting to the mechanisms of a single-payer system. Taking this step will require political courage and co-operation from

all levels of governance, including unions, professional orders, and colleges.

In fact, the management of a health-care system should not revolve around politics at all. It’s a matter of doing everything possible to guarantee the high quality of care that Canadians are right to expect, given that 33 per cent of federal and provincial government budgets are directly funnelled into their health systems.

Health reform has been talked about enough; it’s time to take action and catch up to the other universal health systems in the world that have already embraced

the role of entrepreneurs in the delivery of care.

Otherwise, the next generation is doomed to experience the same heartaches we’re suffering through today. As we head into the umpteenth wave of COVID-19, the pandemic must be the spur that finally gets us to have the conversation we need to have on fundamentally reforming Canada’s health-care systems. Anything less would be irresponsible.

At that time, Everard Pike, in the district of Forest Bank north of Waseca, started a male quarter that also did well at festivals. The group included Everard, baritone, his friend and neighbour, Harold Oakes, top tenor, Everard’s nephew, Don Blyth, tenor, and Blyth’s hired man, John Ravascowsky, who sang the bass.

A little boy had put a tack on the teacher’s chair. The teacher didn’t like it and involved the trustees.

People took sides and there was a silly tempest in a teacup.

What had the male quartet from Forest Bank to do with that?

The song, the funny song, was titled “There Was a Boy, There Was a Tack” (there was a teacher, too).

The last line was, “And the teacher said, ‘I fail to see your point.’”

The residents of the village thought those Forest Bank men were having fun at their expense. Some didn’t like it. Of course, Forest Bank was quite innocent; in those days they had their own school, Waseca had their school and little if anything

Most people, I expect, took it well and many thought it was hilarious.

This is from a story told to me by my mother and older brothers and sisters. Even though there are few people around who remember either Everard Pike or Harold Oakes, they might agree that, even had those men known about the Waseca incident, they most likely would impishly have gone ahead with the same song.

Freedom convoy rolls through North Battleford

Semi trucks draped in Canadian flags and in antilockdown messages rolled through North Battleford Monday afternoon.

The protest was a component of the national Convoy for Freedom happening this week on various routes across the country. Jan. 24, it was Saskatchewan’s turn, as a Lloydminster-toRegina Freedom Convoy took place. The route commenced in Lloydminster at around 10 a.m., making its way into North Battleford just past 1 p.m.

Shortly before 2 p.m., the convoy departed on the Highway 16 bypass to Saskatoon enroute to Regina.

The large convoy of trucks and vehicles made their way off of Highway 16 and into the Petro-Canada lot, to the cheers of a large crowd of supporters lining the highway.

Following a break of several minutes, the convoy departed, again to the cheers and honking of horns of those in attendance.

The convoy was organized in opposition to mandatory federal vaccine mandates for drivers.

A GoFundMe drive to raise $4 million has been organized to assist with costs of fuel and lodging.

Organizer Tamara Lich ex-

plained the reason behind the convoy at that page: “To our fellow Canadians, the time for political over reach is over.

Our current government is implementing rules and mandates that are destroying the foundation of our businesses, industries and livelihoods.

Canadians have been integral to the fabric of humanity in many ways that have shaped the planet.”

The GoFundMe account has been frozen by the platform until a plan for expenditures is presented.

This convoy has not been without controversy, with critics blasting the protest for promoting an anti-vax message.

The Canadian Trucking Alliance has issued a news release condemning the protest, saying the vast majority of the Canadian trucking industry is vaccinated at a rate mirroring the general public.

“The Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) does not support and strongly disapproves of any protests on public roadways, highways and bridges. CTA believes such actions – especially those that interfere with public safety – are not how disagreements with government policies should be expressed. Members of the trucking industry who want to publicly

express displeasure over government policies can choose to hold an organized, lawful event on Parliament Hill or contact their local MP. What is not acceptable is disrupting the motoring public on highways and commerce at the border.”

The association’s president, Stephen Laskowski, said in a statement that the “Government of Canada and the United States have now made being vaccinated a requirement to cross the border. This regulation is not changing so, as an industry, we must adapt and comply with this mandate.”

“The only way to cross the border, in a commercial truck or any other vehicle, is to get vaccinated.”

The Maverick Party has also issued a statement on the trucker protest. Interim Leader Jay Hill stated, “Maverick Party is not directly involved in the Freedom Convoy, although some Maverick members

and supporters have chosen to support the convoy.

Maverick does not support anti-vaccination but does support freedom of choice and a citizen’s right to decide what they do with

their own bodies. Maverick supports Canadian’s right to participate in peaceful protest when they feel compelled to draw their government’s attention to important issues.

Like the majority of Canadians, most Maverick members have chosen to be vaccinated, some have not. Our party will not condemn either for their choice.”

As an artist, I ponder the reason we practice art. Why should we decorate our homes with art? Perhaps I have been wondering that because I have been in the midst of decorating our new to us home.

Where I place furniture or my art is part of the design process. The best location that gives you satisfaction is well worth the effort. From a design perspective, it can make a room look finished and can show off your interests.

Loving a piece of art and hanging it in your home is an expression of the artist and of yourself. Art can translate your emotions, personality and values. Art can even prompt conversation. It can provide you with a sense of comfort. Art is sometimes more than decorative and we may then be left questioning our worldly habits and thoughts.

2022 Guide to Post-Secondary Education Start your degree at Medicine Hat College Written by the Medicine Hat College Dr. Nicoelle Wanner has been going to Medicine Hat College (MHC) for as long as she can remember.

She recalls following big footprints through the hallways when she

attended early learning programs as a child, singing with the MHC Girls’ Choir as a teen, and studying in the cafeteria for high school finals. More recently, she goes to the college to work as one of the physicians in

the campus medical clinic.

“Medicine Hat College has always been here for me,” says Wanner.

When the time came to start her post-secondary education, the decision was a no brainer.

In addition to the solid education she received at MHC, she also had the opportunity to connect with people and develop relationships – skills that have served her well in her career.

Wanner finished her

medical degree at the University of Alberta and returned to Medicine Hat for her residency. With strong roots in the community, she established her medical practice, started her family and began building the life she wanted to have. After 13 years, the busy mom of three closed her practice and moved to the MHC campus clinic, allowing her more time for family activities and nonclinical initiatives.

“The thing I love most about my job is the opportunities it’s given me. My training has allowed me to create the job that I want and give me that independence to

really tailor my work,” says Wanner, who is also involved with improving pediatric mental health services in Medicine Hat. Being back at MHC, Wanner says she has come full circle. “In a way, I see myself in so many of the students that come to see me. A new era has begun with the swearing in of Derek Schmidt as the new chair of the Battlefords Chamber of Commerce.

It also promises to be a new era for the chamber itself, with plans for a new name and a rebrand of the whole organization.

It was all unveiled during the noon hour at the Chair’s Banquet held at the Blend restaurant, which could also be attended virtually by chamber members across the area.

“I’m very humbled to accept the role of the 116th Chair of the Battlefords Chamber of Commerce,” said Schmidt, who said the list of past chairs “truly reads as a who’s who of business in the Battlefords.”

Schmidt’s term will run for the next year. He takes over from Melanie Roberts of North West College who will stay on the executive as past chair.

It promises to be a year of significant initiatives for Schmidt, starting with

a proposed name change for the organization — to the Battlefords and District Chamber of Commerce.

The name change must still be approved by members at the chamber’s upcoming Annual General Meeting.

As part of the proposed rebrand, a new and more colourful logo has been unveiled for the Battlefords and District Chamber. The old “helmet” logo is to be replaced by two stylized “Cs” connected together, one on the outside and other on the inside, with a wheat sheaf in the centre.

North Battleford woman vanishes in 1971 Gail McCarthy’s case is Edmonton’s oldest historical missing person case

On a cold Sunday morning Nov. 14, 1971, 23-yearold Eileen ‘Gail’ McCarthy vanished on her way to the Misericordia Hospital in Edmonton where she worked as a medical technician.

Police reports indicate McCarthy was last seen wearing a brown coat with a white fur collar and white hospital stockings as she boarded an Edmonton transit bus around 6:30 a.m. She had just left her basement apartment at 11820 – 124 St., which she shared with her paratrooper military husband Ian McCarthy.

The couple had only been

married about five months and Gail was three months pregnant at the time of her disappearance.

“We were able to trace her to a point at which she would have transferred buses but after that – nothing,” retired City of Edmonton Police Detective Al Gowler said in the book Deadly Encounters: True Crime Stories of Alberta, by Barbara Smith. “She simply vanished and she’s never been seen since.

“We did have one lead on that case once,” added Gowler. “A young woman, a nurse, was waiting for a bus after her shift at the Royal Alex Hospital. She was standing alone at the bus stop and a man drove up, got out of his car, opened

the trunk and proceeded to try to put her in it. She had other plans and he finally fled the scene without having accomplished his purpose.”

Gail’s husband reported her missing at approximately 5:30 p.m. that day.

Gail, a brown-eyed petite woman of only 5-foot-3 and 115 pounds, was originally from North Battleford, Sask., and had moved to Edmonton about a year-and-a-half before she disappeared. Police say she had brown hair but had dyed it blonde. In media reports, Gail was described as a quiet, shy, introverted person who loved poetry and baking.

Her case is Edmonton’s oldest historical missing person case.

New era for chamber Continued from Page 11 The redesign was done by Kyla Vaughan of Vaughan Graphics, who presented the new look at the event.

She explained that while the current design connects to the history of the Battlefords, it doesn’t connect to the purpose of the chamber or appeal as much to the diversity of the community.

“We wanted to create a fresh new brand look that generated new interest and reengaged existing members while connecting more clearly to the intention of the chamber,” Vaughan said.

While a rebrand and name change is coming, Schmidt pledged a steady approach at the helm.

He said former boards

have the chamber headed the right direction and “there’s no need for drastic change.” But he added the chamber was not perfect.

“We still have work to do. Advocacy and support for our members will continue as we maneuver through, hopefully, the end of a pandemic.”

The chamber also released its highly-touted report on the Economic Impact on Shopping Local on the North Battleford Regional Economy. The study was commissioned by the Battlefords chamber and prepared by the Regina firm Praxis Consulting Ltd. It was presented

by Linda Machniak, the chamber’s chief operating officer.

The report evaluated

what a shift of 10 per cent in spending at local firms could accomplish. According to that report, a 10 per cent shift could result in adding 332 positions, increasing total labour income by $15.9 million and generate an additional $41.1 million in GDP, with an increase of $72.7 million in total gross domestic output.

“It might be unrealistic to expect and attract a 332-employee business to the Battlefords today,” said Machniak. “But I don’t believe it’s unrealistic to imagine an additional one or two employees at every chamber member business to achieve that number. To make that happen let’s all shop the Battlefords.”

Friendship Club remains active within restrictions

The Borden Friendship Club held their monthly bingo night on Jan. 19 with a decent crowd out to enjoy the evening. Winning cash were Joyce Olzewski, Megan Johnson, Carlie Saunders (twice), Martha Rempel, Kasey Saunders, Gerry Wainwright, Lorraine Olinyk and Jim Olinyk. The blackout cash went to Ruben Rempel.

The club will hold their

next bingo night on Feb. 16 at 7 p.m., open to the public, but participants must be vaccinated and wear masks.

The Friendship Club held a business meeting Jan. 20 to discuss upcoming events. The club passed a motion to cancel the Jan. 26 and Feb. 23 potluck suppers and a Feb. 9 business meeting. A meeting will be held March 9. It was decided to still go ahead with the bingo nights as the attendance

is not that high and safety protocols are followed.

The annual meeting will be held April 13 and a nominating committee will be appointed at the March 9 meeting.

The club has 87 members and nine of those are life members. Criteria for a life membership is 85 years of age. Life members do not have to pay annual dues and receive a certificate. Two new life members are T. Hrenkiw and W. Dyck.

WDM still restricting volunteer access

The Western Development Museum welcomed many visitors to their Christmas lights drive through the village. Positive comments were received.

Cold weather caused closure for a few days, so the season was extended beyond the closing date of Jan. 9. Staff offer thanks to sponsors and visitors. Proceeds support maintenance

at the museum.

Only two volunteers have been able to go into the museum because of COVID. Hopefully they will be able to open up to more volunteers soon. The gift shop remains open and it carries a good variety of interesting items. The museum will be closed Mondays until April, when they will begin spring hours.

Out our window we have watched the development of Oil Can Charlie’s

in our neighbourhood. It was completed shortly after the new year and doors are now open to the public.

Cold weather or not, residents of Battleford West Place have kept up their early morning coffee row.

It is a great time for all the residents to be together and converse on all kinds of subjects. Most times there is a jigsaw puzzle on the go and anyone who feels like it can take a turn at fitting in a few pieces.

Happy New Year to all our readers. Our first meeting of 2022 was cold at -26 C with light snow falling. Many of our members choose to stay warm and safe at home and were encouraged to do so as a lot of the streets were impassable and the country roads hadn’t been plowed and were also impassable from our latest snowfall.

For those of us that came to the meeting we had a very good Q & A session with Leah from Chapel Gallery about our upcoming quilt exhibition at the gallery which will start on Jan. 26 and end on March 6. A reception will be held on Thursday, Feb. 10 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come out and view all the quilts on display.

This is usually the time of year when a lot of sewing is done as it is too cold to venture out. Due to COVID a lot of our planned activities at the guild have been curtailed, but on Thursday, Jan. 13, there will be one day for UFO’s (unfinished objects). It is an opportunity to sew and visit and catch up on the latest news since last year, weather permitting, of course.

On that note, stay healthy and safe. Our next meeting will be Friday, Feb. 4.

Boxall elected as APAS president

‘Good policy is important to ensure a strong ag sector’ says new exec

Ian Boxall, a grain farmer in the RM of Connaught north of Tisdale, has been elected as the president of the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan.

APAS is Saskatchewan’s democratically elected, non-partisan farm policy and advocacy organization since 2000, and represents ratepayers in 140 rural municipalities.

“Good policy is important to ensure a strong ag sector and I’m honoured

that they’ve given me the role to be the president and kind of the spokesperson for the group,” Boxall said.

“I think producers in Saskatchewan need to have our voice heard on changes we want to see on the next set of programming, that is important. Whether that’s business risk management (BMR) programming or whether that’s not nonBRM programming funded through the federal and provincial governments, it’s important that they understand what’s important to the producers of Saskatchewan.”

One issue impacting producers Boxall said is

rural connectivity.

In 2020 APAS designed a Rural Connectivity Task Force, which released a series of recommendations in 2021 following six months of research into the causes of poor rural internet and cellular service.

In these recommendations, APAS advocated that all levels of government use a “dig once” policy to coordinate their utility and infrastructure upgrades to put more fibre optic cable into the ground when other services are being upgraded; as well as creating and enforce policies that ensure a

timely response when third parties request access to data transport facilities amongst other suggestions.

“Until every rural resident in Saskatchewan has proper cellphone and internet service we will be

continuing to fight on that behalf,” Boxall said. “Ensuring that they have what they need to run their businesses and run their lives in rural Saskatchewan.

Internet has become now where it is a necessity, the same as power and energy is.”

Another issue is ensuring access to feed and water for the livestock sector as well as advocacy on behalf of farmers dealing with grain contracts from last year’s drought. If the drought continues, Boxall said conversations need to begin on how producers can be assisted.

Sask. ag research receives gov’t funding

Agricultural researchers will receive more than $9.1 million in government funding this year through Saskatchewan’s Agriculture Development Fund.

David Marit, the province’s agriculture minister, made the announcement Jan. 11 during Saskatchewan’s Crop Production Week events in Saskatoon.

The funding, which includes commitments from the federal and Saskatchewan governments, will support 55 crop-related agricultural research projects aimed at expanding the province’s agriculture sector.

The $9.1 million of taxpayer support will be combined with an additional $4.1 million that was committed by industry

partners, co-funders and producer commissions, bringing total research funding through government and non-government sources to $13.2 million.

Investments from co-funders, including producer support, included more than $1.5 million from the Western Grain Research Foundation (WGRF), $1.3 million from the Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission, $492,000 from Saskatchewan Pulse Growers, $203,000 from the Manitoba Crop Alliance, $202,000 from the Saskatchewan Canola Development Commission, $155,000 from Alberta Wheat, $135,000 from the Saskatchewan Flax Development Commission, $100,000 from Results Driven Agricultural Research, $13,000 from

the Prairie Oat Growers Association and $5,000 from Mustard 21.

Marit said investments in crop-related agricultural research are an important element in Saskatchewan’s economic growth strategy.

That strategy includes increasing the province’s agricultural production to 45 million tonnes annually, increasing the value of annual ag exports to $20 billion and increasing revenues from the province’s value-added agri-food sector to $10 billion a year by 2030.

“Saskatchewan’s ag sector is well equipped to accommodate this kind of growth,” Marit said.

Academic research is fundamental to achieving the sector’s goals, he added.

“Research is what drives Saskatchewan’s agriculture

industry. Research is what generates the knowledge and ideas that help us work better, smarter and more sustainably,” he said.

“It’s what keep us competitive and generates the kind of economic growth activity that will carry us through the next decade and beyond.”

WGRF chair Keith Degenhardt said ongoing financial commitments by producer groups and all industry partners are important to ensuring the success of the ag industry.

“It is evident from the substantial investment by WGRF, and all industry partners, that producers are committed to investing in agricultural research,” Degenhardt said.

“We know the knowledge and tools (that) research provides are vital for our continued success.

The ADF continues to provide a great forum for producer groups to collaborate and co-fund agricultural research that improves production and sustainability for western Canadian producers.”

The ADF is supported

by Ottawa and Saskatchewan’s provincial government through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

CAP is a five-year, $3 billion cost-sharing agreement between federal, provincial and territorial governments, aimed at expanding Canada’s agriculture, agri-food and agriproducts sectors.

Support for ADF projects is awarded annually, on a competitive basis, to researchers who conduct projects in areas that are important to Saskatchewan’s farmers, ranchers and industry partners.

The board of directors elects the president annually with a maximum term of six years. Boxall said if the board allows it, his goal would be to serve for a long-term.

“I wish Ian the best of luck with his new role as president,” said Todd Lewis, former APAS president. “I’ve worked with him over the last several years, and I know APAS will be in good hands with the new executive.”

Examples of projects that received ADF funding in 2022 include: Research into the effects of intercropping on disease levels in various pulse crops.

Projects that look for innovative ways to mitigate root rot in peas.

Work aimed at removing undesirable characteristics of protein ingredients from canola, hemp and flaxseed.

Of the 55 crop-related projects awarded ADF funding this year, 33 will be conducted by researchers at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon and 13 will be conducted by researchers at Agriculture Canada.

Total government funding awarded to U of S projects through the ADF amounts to nearly $5.5 million.

Survey confirms nature is key to well-being in this time of pandemic Eight in 10 people say they are spending time in nature Staff Canadians are continuing to seek refuge in the outdoors to help cope with the stress and anxiety of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Nature Conservancy of Canada.

With another round of restrictions and closures being introduced in many provinces, NCC says it is important for physical, mental and emotional well-being to connect with nature.

An Ipsos Public Affairs poll conducted for NCC reveals 82 per cent of the people surveyed are spending time in nature.

Thirty-seven per cent said they are spending more time outdoors compared to their lives before the pandemic began in March 2020. Among respondents, women, young people and young families were most likely to be spending more time outside.

“These findings underscore why protecting and having access to nature is important and helps all of us,” said François Duclos, senior advisor for visitor-

use planning with NCC. “Many Canadians are turning to nature reserves, trails, green spaces and parks for physically distanced outdoor activities.

People want to safely connect with others or to get out for some sunlight and a walk, hike, run or bike ride. They are embracing opportunities to get fresh air, exercise, feel a sense of calm and take a break from increased telework and screen time.”

Of the 18 per cent of people who said they are spending less time in nature, one-third indicated they were following their provincial health guidelines and staying close to home. Lack of access was a barrier for many who said they require transportation or don’t have natural spaces close to where they live. Others said they simply don’t have time.

“Spending time in nature can help reduce stress and make you feel better emotionally, while also contributing to your physical well-being,” said Kayla Burak, engagement manager with NCC in Sas-

katchewan.

Funding fuels innovative livestock research: 19 researchers, 23 projects Submitted University of Saskatchewan (USask) researchers have been awarded $4.2 million to develop livestock-related innovations that range from improving forage feed to advancing work on vaccines to tackle the global spread of African swine fever (ASF).

Funding through Saskatchewan’s Agriculture Development Fund (ADF) was awarded to 19 researchers to support 23 projects.

“USask research continues to play a foundational role in establishing Saskatchewan’s reputation as a force in the global agricultural sector,” said USask Vice-President Research Baljit Singh. “This investment will power discovery that builds improved food security for the world, and economic prosperity for Saskatchewan.”

The ADF livestock research projects were also awarded additional industry co-funding by: Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association (SCA) $447,956; Saskatchewan Forage Seed Development, $3,500; and Sask Milk, $31,500.

The recipients are: Andrew Sharpe, Global Institute for Food Security (GIFS) at US-

ask ($764,130 in total, plus SCA co-funding): In the first project, awarded $392,391 by ADF, Sharpe and co-principal investigator Sampath Perumal of GIFS propose to develop new genomic resources to better understand salt and drought tolerance mechanisms in alfalfa, an important legume forage crop.

“Alfalfa cultivation is not only economically important in North America, it also offers the potential to use marginal lands affected by salinity, and improve the quality soil by fixing nitrogen,” said Sharpe.

The second project, awarded $371,739 by ADF, has Sharpe, co-principal investigator Biligetu and their team developing new foundational genomic resources for hybrid wheatgrass, a palatable, perennial grass forage crop.

by ADF to develop a continuous porcine cell line to grow African swine fever virus, a devastating viral disease that causes nearly 100 per cent mortality in pigs.

Currently there is no effective vaccine or treatment for ASF. Although ASF has not

been detected in Canada, it is a significant threat to Canada’s pork industry — for both pig health and for the devastating impact a positive case could have on international market access.

VIDO is the first nongovernment organization in Canada with permission from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to work with ASF virus in its containment Level 3 facility.

Other awarded projects are: Wolfgang Köster, VIDO ($300,500 plus cofunding from Sask Milk): Köster’s team is developing a new vaccine to enhance protection of calves against disease caused by Salmonella Dublin, a zoonotic pathogen spreading in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Heather Wilson, VIDO ($210,000): Wilson, co-principal investigator Azita Haddadi and their team is researching administering vaccines directly into the sow uterus at breeding to promote immune responses by transferring antibodies to suckling piglets.

Yanyun Huang, Prairie Diagnostic Services (PDS) ($198,261, plus co-funding from SCA): Huang’s team from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine

(WCVM) and Simon Fraser University is developing a genomics-based diagnostic tool to combat reproductive failures in cattle, estimated to cost Canadian ranchers $280 million annually.

Sarah Wood, PDS ($149,000): Wood’s team aims to determine effective therapeutic doses of antimicrobials for control of the bacterial disease European foulbrood in honeybees in Western Canada.

Dan Columbus, Prairie Swine Centre (PSC) ($273,202): This project examines how dietary protein quality affects gut health in young pigs. To accomplish this, Columbus’s team will use a variety of techniques to identify key

factors related to diet that affect gut health, validate these factors in young pigs, and examine dietary strategies that support optimal gut health.

Jennifer Brown, PSC ($56,000): Brown and her team aim to determine whether providing environmental enrichment to pigs early in life will have a lasting impact on their later behaviour, thus promoting better health and reducing damaging conduct.

Bernardo Predicala, PSC ($186,950): Predicala’s team is investigating novel methods to reduce the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance in swine production.

In a second project, which was awarded

$151,800 by ADF, his team will conduct optimization and field validation of a rapid diagnostic test kit for Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus (PEDv) under Canadian conditions.

Jon Bennett, College of Agriculture and Bioresources (AgBio) ($289,483): A team led by Bennett will examine how harvest frequency and different plant species affect the integration of native forage varieties into tame pastures.

In a second project, awarded $335,588 by ADF, Bennett’s team will work to improve control of leafy spurge, an important noxious weed.

Tim Mutsvangwa, AgBio ($155,832, plus cofunding from Sask Milk): Mutsvangwa’s team will evaluate the effects of applying leaf fungicides to forage barley that’s resistant or susceptible to fungal diseases.

Eric Lamb, AgBio ($30,650) Recovery of grassland productivity following fires appears to be linked to post-fire weather conditions. Lamb and his team will determine if this is the case by assembling and analyzing data from past studies of grassland fires.

Five agronomy priorities for canola you should know

The Canola Council of Canada’s five agronomy priorities, when implemented fully in every field, will improve canola yield and profitability, and will help to ensure success with the crop.

1. All farms will benefit from applying the right fertilizer products at the right rate, right time and right place to improve yield, reduce nutrient losses and increase profits. These are the 4Rs of nutrient management. One-pass seeding into standing stubble, a fairly common practice, is an excellent foundation for 4R. Canola Council of Canada agronomy specialists also encourage farmers to use soil tests and set fertilizer rates based on soil-test recommendations.

Canada’s canola industry has a goal to see 4R practices used on 90 per cent of canola acres by 2025. Go to canolacouncil.org/4R for more details on the goal and on 4R practices.

2. Try new cultivars all the time. Yield lost to incorrect cultivar choice may be a greater risk than yield gained

by choosing the highestyielding cultivar. The best seed traits can include disease resistance specific to risks for each field, maturity to match crop establishment and harvest timing goals and pod-shatter resistance to harvest more of the crop.

3. Hybrid canola studies in Western Canada show that a stand with five to eight plants per square foot is best to maintain the yield potential of canola. Uniformity is also key.

To simplify pest management and harvest timing, try to achieve the target population across the field and have all plants at the same growth stage.

4. Canola growers can find all kinds of pests and problems in their fields. The key is to focus time and inputs on the most important yield loss factors. Scout regularly to see what pests, environmental factors or

mechanical issues (seed placement, sprayer settings) cause the greatest loss for each field. Find scouting and management tips for flea beetles, sclerotinia stem rot and all other major pests in the Diseases, Weeds and Insects chapters at canolaencyclopedia.ca.

5. We want canola growers to deliver every seed at No.1 grade, and leave none behind. To do this, growers have three steps: give all seeds time to mature; harvest with minimal losses; and store canola without spoilage.

Grower survey results suggest canola growers, in general, may achieve yield improvement through later swathing.

The downy woodpecker is common throughout most of North America.

This male downy was on Finlayson Island. The downy is the smallest of our woodpeckers. The drumming you hear is similar to a songbird’s song and denotes the woodpecker’s territory for all to stay out of their neck of the woods.

If the drumming is rhythmic, it plays a part in attracting other woodpeckers for mating. These birds eat berries, insects and seeds. They nest in a dead trunk or branch or in birdhouses that we build for them. Take note of the claws on this woodpecker that keep it attached to the tree as it knocks its little head against the wood. Peiqiang Yu, AgBio ($118,100): To provide support for establishing feasible methane mitigation strategies and reduce nitrogen excretion in ruminant livestock, Yu and his team will test, develop and evaluate environmentally friendly, high-value blended feed pellets.

Mika Asai-Coakwell, AgBio ($68,587, plus SCA co-funding): Gestation length can influence other economically important traits such as birthweight and calving ease in the cattle industry.

Murray Jelinski, WCVM ($96,446, plus cofunding from SCA): Lameness is the second most common disease of feedlot cattle, with septic arthritis being one of the most difficult types of lameness to treat.

Jelinski and co-PIs Tony Ruzzini (WCVM) and Tim McAllister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada were awarded $103,848 plus SCA cofunding for a project that makes their team the first to investigate the horizontal transfer of antimicrobial resistant genes between isolates of Mycoplasma bovis, a key bacterium involved in chronic pneumonia in feedlot calves’ isolates.

Susantha Gomis, WCVM ($165,000): Finding alternatives to antibiotics in the poultry industry is a priority.

Diego Moya, WCVM ($208,346): Aligned with Saskatchewan’s goals for improving livestock industry competitiveness while also improving animal health and welfare, this project aims to optimize bison feeder performance to sustainably meet the growing demand for bison meat. A multidisciplinary team led by Moya and Gabriel Ribeiro will assess the effects of dietary starch on bison growing performance, rumen health, feeding behaviour, carcass traits, and meat quality and nutritional composition.

Survived by his wife, Judy, and their three children Boyd (wife, Donna) Bradley and Michelle (husband, Del Hesch); three grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Dean was born in Macrorie, SK on February 5th, 1928. He attended public school there, high school at City Park Collegiate in Saskatoon. He also took three years of engineering at the U. of S. He joined SaskPower in 1949 and retired with 35 years of service in 1984. His plan once retired was to build a cottage at Michel Point at Dore Lake which he did and we were fortunate enough to enjoy it for another 35 years. We were also blessed to be able to enjoy over 71 years of marriage. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to BUH or a charity of your choice. Special thanks to Dr. Patricia Campbell and the wonderful nurses on Palliative care, third floor for the 10 days he was in their care. Thank you everyone for the visits, food, flowers and cards. As per Dean’s wishes there will be no funeral, but there will be a small family service at some time in the future at Michel Point. She was always fiercely independent and drove her truck until only a few years ago, when the Saskatoon traffic became too intimidating. As a farm wife she worked hand in hand with her husband, Andrew, our father and Gido, doing what needed to be done as well as caring for her 4 children. All of us remember her good meals and wanting to send us off with food when we left. It was her way of showing love. Although she had several health issues, some minor and some significant she was never one to dwell on them. When she felt better, she made the adjustments needed in lifestyle and continued on. She was always interested in the goings on in the community and family and even when her great grandchildren were mentioned she wanted to know what they were doing and how they were and what she might give them. Everyone will always remember her strong independent character, good sense of humour and her enjoyment of a good laugh with a friend or neighbour. GILLATT: June 4, 1930 January 18, 2022 Ida Mae Boutilier was the last of 6 children born into the Roy Boutilier (Anna Forss) family.

She was born on June 4, 1930, while the family was living on the Sandhill Farm, one mile east of Richard.

Later, in the fall of 1936, the family moved into Richard. Ida completed Grade 12, in June, 1949, and her class was the first group to have a formal graduation and program. After 1 year at Saskatoon Normal School, Ida taught at Spinney Hill, Prolific, Battleford Central, Richard, Ruddell, and Maymont.

She even was a substitute teacher for her niece, Cathy, a few times. Ida retired from the teaching profession in June of 1984.

On August 4, 1956, Ida married her soul mate, Cliff Gillatt. Ida and Cliff were married for over 65 years. For 20 years, Cliff and Ida lived on the Gillatt Farm at Lilac. Her nieces and nephews were constantly running in and out of their home. Cliff and Ida, especially enjoyed when the city children, nephew, Mel Billings, then later, great nephew and niece, Garth and Glenda Kroeger would come for a visit. Cliff and Ida introduced them to many aspects of farm life, and adventures were enjoyed by all. In the fall of 1976, Cliff and Ida moved into their brand new home along Highway 40. Ida loved to garden and always had a huge garden in the back. She gave away a lot of fresh vegetables to family and friends. She also enjoyed canning, and doing all kinds of needlework. Ida was always eager to try a new technique to create artwork. For years, Ida was an avid curler and enjoyed taking their RV, camping and golfing with Cliff. Ida was a dedicated member of Battleford United Church. She would always be found working to prepare suppers, luncheons and helping with fundraising projects for the church. She was also a member of the Lakeland Library Board, Western Development Museum Board and the Richard Women’s Groups --- Homemakers, W.I., Women’s Club and Richard U.C.W. Ida enjoyed visiting, playing cards, and watching her nieces and nephews participating in their activities. She played a lot of “Uno” in the last few years. Ida was never afraid to tell a joke or two, as well. Aunt Idee and her husband Cliff, were the best ever second set of parents for the children of her sister, Charlotte, and Wes’s children. She planned an Easter treasure hunt, yearly, for them, popped huge bowls of popcorn to take with them to Drive-In movies, and was always present for the special moments in their lives. She will be remembered, by everyone who met her, as a very special, classy lady.

SEASONAL MAINTENANCE/EQUIPMENT OPERATOR POSITION The R.M. of Medstead No. 497 invites applications for an experienced full time Seasonal Maintenance/Equipment Operator.

The Seasonal Maintenance/Equipment Operator will be responsible for mowing this municipality’s ditches, rock picking, mulching in conjunction with the grader operators, installing and repairing signs and other jobs as directed by the Reeve. Opportunity may be present in the future to move into a grader operator position. Pay rates depending on experience.

Shuffleboard tournament draws 21 participants

What a mixed bag of weather we have seen in this past week or two, but, as always ,we survive and come through stronger than ever. The warm day Sunday last, saw much of the ice drop away. By noon it was possible to scrape it off windshields eas‑ ily. The roads were plowed and treated, so were pass‑ able by Sunday morning.

No doubt though they had been skating rinks for a while. Haven’t heard of anyone falling and break‑ ing a limb, maybe because it was so visible that more caution was used than oth‑ er times.

A shuffleboard tourna‑ ment was held at the Do Drop In Jan. 22 with 21 people taking part. Under the leadership of Nestor Fransoo, all went smoothly even though there were late additions and late cancella‑ tions to his list of partici‑ pants.

Starting off at 9:30 a.m., with a stop for lunch, and ending at 4 p.m., it was a long day, but one filled with fun and laughter.

While not playing at the shuffleboard, there were games set up that many enjoyed such as Chit Chat, Sequence and Tile Rummy.

The pool table was even used, in its crowded cor‑ ner, and some enjoyed just visiting or watching others play.

Top winners at shuffleboard were Gordon Klein and Carol Dyck.

Second were Albert Huys and David Sayers and third was Gail Hilderman, who had several different partners. The next tournament will be held Feb. 12.

Three tables of Norwegian Whist were played at the Do Drop In Jan. 21. Top score there was Albert Huys, way ahead of Joyce Luckey. Third were Vivianne Lesko and Rita Peterson. It was a pleasant time.

Bridge Tuesday after‑ noon in the Pioneer Hall had two tables, so partici‑ pants played individually.

Top score went to Marga‑ ret Dyck. Tied for second were Mary Phelps and Donna Scherman and tied for third were Alfred Blais and Fraser Glen. Thursday afternoon there were two and a half tables and top score went to Mary Phelps and Eric Callbeck. Second were Margaret Dyck and Dave Creegan.

Here to take part in the sturling bonspiel on Jan, 15, were two of my girls from Alberta, Don‑ na and Joyce. They were pleasantly impressed at the whole set up at the rink ‑ the ice, the building and the kitchen. The kitchen prices were so reason‑ able and the food was so good. They found the ice very slippery and had sore muscles for a day or two,

Another daughter Sally Bouvier, came down from Beauval to share the fun Saturday, with her sis‑ ters and friends here. I have had some needed help moving snow around, as it surely piled up in the yard and around the vehicles.

Because of the weather conditions I ended up with all three here for a week ‑ one lucky mother. I had to share with Auntie Linda Ard, but that was all good.

When Donna and Joyce drove to Edmonton Sunday, they report the roads were fine to Lloydminster then it rained hard all the way to Edmonton, with wip‑ ers on next to high speed.

Their only two challenges were passing the big trucks and coping with the spray they send out. The rain set‑ tled the snow considerably there where it was warmer than here.

We followed a snow plow going into North Battleford Sunday and, if there weren’t sheltered spots where we could see it, the snow he was throw‑ ing out completely hid him from view. The one white light was all we could see, at times, and the blue light doesn’t show up in day‑ light. We felt that he should have more lights, like a tow truck, for safety.

About 40 fish shacks are to be seen from the berm area, so it is proving to be a popular winter sport.

Some homes have been broken into in Meota and Lakeview, so people should be alert to what’s going on in their neighborhood and keep their eyes open for suspicious activities and people.

Meota Curling Club It was an action-filled week at the Meota Curling Club with six games on the schedule.

It was an emotional roller coaster of a game Tuesday night between the

Pat Mohr and Derek Wel‑ ford rinks in what ended up being a 10-10 tie game.

This barn burner had three ends where four or more points were scored, three lead changes and it all came down the final stone.

The two hottest teams in the league kept up their winning ways as both the Demontarnel and Becotte rinks extended their re‑ spective winning streaks.

Darcy Demontarnel and her team dominated the Schmidt rink 7-1 to extend her streak to three games.

The Becotte rink, relying heavily on the strong play from recent sturling spiel winners Robert St. Amant and Ed Cadrin, extended their winning streak to four games with a 7-4 win over the Doom rink that was skipped by Wayne Payne.

It was a valiant ef‑ fort from the Tait rink in a tightly contested battle with Pat Mohr, but Mohr was able to fend off the comeback and win 8-6.

Zane Lacousiere had a beautiful draw for one in the fifth end, but it was far too late as Team Czuy fell to the Welford rink 10-1.

With confidence running at an all time high, Bru de‑ feated Weber 10-3 as they quietly creeped upwards in the standings.

The prestigious honour of Curler of the Week goes to skip Darcy Demontarnel.

A devoted curler with an impeccable attendance record, Darcy called a masterful game Tuesday night that was perfectly executed. Darcy played to her strengths of using a combination of draw and down weights that left nothing for her opposing skip to work with, resulting in numerous ends where they stole. Considered the top curler of her household, Demontarnel has been trending in the right direction and will continue to lead a tough team to beat in the coming weeks.

My habit of grumbling, faultfinding and scoffing I told Ed, “As I look back on it now, my childhood was a solid education in developing my talents for grumbling, faultfinding and scoffing.”

Faultfinding came easily to me as a child; I blamed others, not my innocent self, for what happened to me. I learned blaming others was effortless, and it became a significant trait of my thinking throughout my life. I am not proud of it.

It is not easy to discard an old habit. Old habits keep reappearing in our lives like an uninvited bout of hiccups.

It doesn’t take any serious searching to find people at fault around us. This is because seeing what

When you find fault with others, they may not appreciate your pointing out what they have done or failed to do. That is the sparky side of fault-

finding.

My school years were a hotbed of practise and perfecting grumbling, faultfinding and scoffing. This column would be a work of fiction if I wrote that other students at school were not keen on grumbling, faultfinding and scoffing.

All three activities become more exciting and

satisfying with friends.

Grumbling about a teacher grows in intensity and power when it is a combined effort. For every fault you can find about your school, subjects, or other students, it’s just a start. The flaw you noted about another can be magnified and multiplied when collaborating with classmates.

We scoff or make fun of someone. At school, making fun of others, usually one or two at a time, happens regularly, but you only notice it when it happens to you.

Some dismiss the power of faultfinding, grumbling and scoffing as if they are no more of a consequence than sneezing. Usually, sneezing doesn’t matter

unless someone sneezes on you without covering their nose. Yes, there are worst things than getting sneezed on or coughed on, but not spit on. When we so quickly grumble, fault find or scoff at others, it is like spitting on them. There is no joy for the person spit on even by accident.

Often, we find fault with those that we know of on some common level. For example, when Jesus returned to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he was not recognized as a famous rabbi or prophet but as Joseph, the carpenter’s son.

It wasn’t that Jesus hadn’t spoken well at the synagogue; in fact, all there were amazed at his gracious words. They were

not impressed by Jesus’ gracious words. His words made them skeptical. They asked scoffingly, “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” (Luke 4: 22) Jesus understood that no prophet is accepted in his hometown. (Luke 4:24) Jesus also understood the people of Nazareth wanted him to prove himself to them. As a physician should be able to heal himself, Jesus needed to do what they had heard Jesus had accomplished in Capernaum.

When the people began finding fault with Jesus, it escalated to his attempted murder. Blaming, faultfinding and scoffing are of the devil’s design. I need to break these habits. Do You? (Luke 4:28-30)

Betty White Challenge benefits KC

KC Rescue in Unity benefitted from the Betty White challenge issued for what would have been the legendary actress’s 100th birthday Jan. 17. The cat rescue operation received more than $1,500 in donations that were still trickling in the next day. A KC Rescue spokesperson says, “This will go a long way to helping us house, feed and medically care for the cats.

We’re still at capacity with cats on the waiting list so we are very appreciative for the financial support from this initiative.”

Be patient with town crews as they continue to clean streets and avenues.

The added snow and winds of Jan. 17 hampered efforts, but they continue to proceed with snow clearing around town.

Mount Wilson sledding hill continues to be a popular outdoor recreation option as does the outdoor arena. Folks are also enjoying cleared paths north of town towards the dog park for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Those who prefer a steadier surface can take in the indoor

walking at the community centre every weekday.

Unity Composite High School students have held exams and are now into term two. Graduating students have one more semester left of their high school days. School activities have had some disruptions due to cases in the school and we all owe a huge thank you to teachers and school staff for continuing to manage disruption.

St. Peter’s School has also experienced some positive cases, but the team continues to forge ahead.

Unity Public School students are loving new

snow hills created by the generous work of RoJet Contracting. UPS also has Telemiracle fundraising lined up and, if they meet their goal, students will get a choice of ways to torture teacher, Mr. Gieni.

Provincial action for local hockey teams has begun. Your best bet for knowing what games are on tap is checking posters around town, social media, town of Unity arena schedule or the screens at the rink. Come cheer on your local Lazers as they compete for a provincial title.

Unity Skating Club continues to practise and

prepare and, at present, the club remains hopeful for their ice carnival in March.

The men’s open bonspiel is wrapping up at the Unity Curling Club.

Although it didn’t gain as many spectators as in the past, the club was thankful to be hosting events like this once again.

Even though the Unity Wildlife Federation was forced to postpone their annual supper and awards, the organization is hoping to host the event in the spring or when the pandemic situation in the province improves.

Lost Car Rescue, a television series that

started two weeks ago, stars a few guys with passion for vehicles. One of these is David Mischuk, former owner of Country Autobody, located three miles from my farm. If one saw an old vehicle on a flat deck trailer going towards the Mayfair-Rabbit Lake area it probably was going to his place. It is always more interesting to watch

when you know a person on the show.

A former high school classmate of mine and her husband were killed near a harbourwhile vacationing in San Diego, Calif. last week. Jerry and Madeleine (nee Frey) Zimmer were pedestrians at a crosswalk when a speeding vehicle struck them and they were instantly killed. They re-
