Help the Food Bank: Shop local Double the giving

Donations to the Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre are always a good thing, but there’s a way for that donation to pack a double punch this Christmas season.

That way is to shop locally, and provide those locally-produced products to the food bank which can then be distributed by the Empty Stocking Fund to families as part of their Christmas hampers.

That idea dawned on Chris Odishaw of Battleford Furniture when he was down at the food bank recently to discuss ideas about how to help. What surprised him was the amount of food the Empty Stocking Fund obtains that is made outside the area.

A lightbulb went off in Odishaw’s head and he phoned a friend, Stuart Southgate, who has honeybees and who could supply locally-produced honey for the food hampers.

“I bought 450 one-Kg containers of honey to put into these food hampers,” said Odishaw.

Those containers arrived and were dropped off at the food bank offices on 101st Street last Thursday. The honey will be safely stored inside until the items can be put into the Empty Stocking Fund hampers for distribution, in time for Christmas.

Odishaw has also been buying pizza for the workers at the food bank this holiday season. He said he spoke to Erin Katerynych, executive director, about the idea of spending time

and effort to support the local economy.

“We as local businesses, and anyone donating, support the people less fortunate,” said Odishaw, “but why not be two-fold and consider supporting local businesses?”

Odishaw also pointed out that there are lots of studies done showing that local-made honey from local bees is healthier for the local population.

He thinks others in the community should consider the idea of turning to local businesses for food they could then donate to the less fortunate.

“Let’s start supporting our fellow neighbours and the people who produce food,” said Odishaw, who added people should “think about doing that a little more often.”

Province reveals details of vaccine distribution

The province has unveiled details of its plans to

distribute the COVID-19 vaccine when it arrives.

Premier Scott Moe, Minister of Health Paul Merriman, Chief Medical

Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab and other officials made the announcement Wednesday, a day behind schedule after a power

failure at the legislature scrubbed their planned Tuesday press conference.

The plan will begin with a pilot program on Dec. 15

at Regina General Hospital and continue in phases.

Rural resident attacked with ‘edged weapon’

Neighbours express fear of crime in the area

Battlefords RCMP are investigating after a fiftyfive-year-old man was left in serious condition following an attack in a rural area near the city.

According to Battlefords RCMP Staff Sgt. Jason Teniuk, they received a call at about 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 7 that a man was “assaulted with an edged weapon.” S/Sgt. Teniuk said he couldn’t specify what the edged weapon was, saying it was an active investigation and he wanted to protect its integrity.

According to RCMP, a couple of unknown men went to the man’s home asking for help to get their vehicle unstuck but when he went outside to help the men, he was attacked.

The man suffered serious injuries and was treated in hospital and released.

S/Sgt. Teniuk said the Battlefords RCMP and the RCMP Provincial GIS Unit are investigating.

Rural residents living in fear Neighbours living in the area say they are living in fear.

“We are all very concerned about the crime in the area and the insecu-

rity,” said a neighbour of the man who was attacked but didn’t want to be identified.

“It feels like you’re not safe in your home right now and even in your yard during the day.”

The neighbour said the RCMP are doing their best but “it’s getting out of control and it’s not publicized, the amount of crime going on.

“People are unaware of the crime and the number of thefts, the number of break-ins. These things need to be on the news.”

The neighbour said the increase in vehicle and property thefts in the area has increased property insurance costs.

S/Sgt Teniuk said he didn’t have any numbers of property crime incidents.

“Without a massive information pull I cannot confirm that we have ‘lots of incidents’ of break and enters,” he said. “I would absolutely agree that we do a very poor job of reporting to the media. This goes for all of our detachment areas, not just this R.M. “We are under resourced and there is just not enough time in a day to get done everything we need to do.”

but said there are a variety of factors that need to be considered.

The rural resident – who moved to the country to get away from city crime –said they will no longer help people coming to their yard or door asking for help.

“We will make sure our house alarm is on and make sure our doors are locked. We have lived here almost 40 years and lots of times in the night someone has vehicle problems and we go out to help, but now, definitely not. We will phone the police to come or a tow truck to come.”

Moosomin First Nation man sought and arrested

by RCMP as armed and dangerous remains in custody after his first court appearance.

Jonathan Christopher Swiftwolfe appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court Dec. 8 by CCTV and the matter was adjourned. Swiftwolfe is trying to get released on bail and had a show cause hearing scheduled for Dec. 10 in North Battleford Provincial Court. Results of that appearance were unavailable at press time.

Cassandra Fox, who was arrested along with Swiftwolfe, also appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court on Dec. 8 and was released from custody.

RCMP Crime Reduction Team and other specialized support units.

On Dec. 5 the Battlefords RCMP had issued a public warning saying they were trying to locate Swiftwolfe after he had been evading police since April for breaching conditions. Police pointed out that Swiftwolfe had “Westside” tattooed on the side of his face and neck. Westside is a dangerous and violent street gang.

Swiftwolfe was wanted on warrants for charges including two counts of assault, two counts of uttering threats, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of a weapon contrary to a probation order, two counts of flight from police, and dangerous operation of vehicle.

North Battleford RCMP were concerned for the safety of the residents of Moosomin First Nation while Swiftwolfe remained at large. It was a top priority for police officers and the community to locate and arrest him as quickly as possible.

The Chief of the Moosomin First Nation, Bradley Swiftwolfe, stated: “The safety and security of Band members on the Moosomin First Nation is the primary concern for Chief and Council. A peaceful end to this situation involving Jonathan is hoped for.”

RCMP said Swiftwolfe was considered armed and dangerous and if anyone saw him they were not to approach him, but instead call 911 or local police immediately.

North Battleford band director named in $2M sexual assault settlement

A former student of a U.S. band teacher, who is a music director for the North Battleford City Kinsmen Band, was awarded $2 million Dec. 4 in her sexual abuse civil lawsuit against a Washington school district and former band teacher Michael Alstad.

According to court records, Maria Joyner, 47, was sexually abused by Michael Alstad for five to six years in Washington.

Court documents show that Alstad confessed to engaging in sexual acts with Joyner up to four times a week. The acts occurred on the school campus, on band trips, and in his home when Joyner was a student at Weatherwax High School, which is part of the Aberdeen School District No. 5 in Washington.

The large court victory

was a long time coming Joyner’s lawyer, Darrell L. Cochran told the Battlefords News-Optimist in a phone interview Dec. 8 from his Tacoma, Washington office.

“I think that now, more than ever, school districts and their insurance companies realize that the public is fed up with faculty and teachers [abusing] kids,” said Cochran.

“That number reflects society’s disdain for these types of cases.”

The win also sends the message that kids must be protected in other school districts, said Cochran.

“She [Joyner] really fought for that fight since 2007 when she contacted the schools public instruction head for the State of Washington and let them know that Alstad had abused her and was a risk to a lot of other kids.

“That is how she managed to help stop him from being a teacher here

in Washington State,” he added. “Of course he got himself into Canada and no one there had the same information that Washington State did.”

Cochran said Joyner’s highest priority was raising public awareness about what a danger Alstad was to students.

“It gives her a platform for making sure kids are safe.”

The emotional and psychological toll that the years of sexual abuse had on Joyner are severe and life-altering.

“I am doing this not only for my own need to heal but to bring attention to the tremendous injustice that happens to students when a teacher takes advantage of them like this and a district does not respond,” said Joyner in a statement to the Battlefords News-Optimist Dec. 8. “I can no longer stay silent about the profound trauma this man has inflicted on

me and his other victims.

“This is about standing up for those who have been marginalized by injustices and have not been given a voice or even acknowledgment that they were wronged, and to assure them that they did not deserve what happened to them.”

The abuse The first encounter was in October or November of 1985 on a band trip to Spokane, Washington, admitted Alstad in court documents.

He said that in early 1990 Joyner’s parents confronted him about the relationship and it stopped briefly but about a month later they started to have their encounters at school.

“The relationship continued through her graduation in 1991,” admitted Alstad.

Alstad denied that he “groomed” Joyner and said he “fell in love” with her.

ever, that he shouldn’t have acted on his feelings.

“I deeply regret that I did act on it.”

Court documents show that the Aberdeen School District No. 5 in Washington admitted some of Joyner’s allegations but disputed others.

Cochran said no criminal charges were laid against Alstad because the U.S. criminal statue of limitations, “unfortunately is not open long enough to handle a lot of these situations where children are

sexually abused and then years later they can get to the point where they can step forward and really make the claim.”

Alstad’s Linked-in profile states he is General Manager and Director of Music for North Battleford City Kinsmen Band.

Alstad and the North Battleford City Kinsmen Band were contacted for comment. They had not responded by press time.

N.B. council delves into budget discussions

The second night of budget deliberations in North Battleford turned its focus on the city’s protective services on Monday evening.

The deliberations, held virtually on the Zoom platform, focused its attention on general government services, police services, fire services and planning and development.

There was no change put forward to the proposal on the table from administration, which calls for a one per cent increase to the property tax and no increase for utilities.

As of Monday, council seemed on track to complete the deliberations on schedule in their next session on Wednesday night.

Results from Wednesday’s session were unavailable at press time. The schedule for Wednesday’s deliberations calls for leisure services and public works to be discussed.

Here are some of the

highlights from the Monday deliberations: Government Services The total overall financial position for government services is for revenue of $614,500 and expenses of $4,379,202.

General government revenue is estimated to go up $65,000 while wages and benefits are projected to go down $174,000.

Capital expenditures are budgeted to be $265,000 for 2021 and include items such as the terminal services server, a city hall copier, recreation software, electronic timesheets, and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) accounting software.

For the accounting software, the city is looking at switching from the aging VADIM software over to TownSuite. The capital cost is divided over two years at $130,000 in 2021 and $120,000 in 2022.

Police Services Revenue is projected to increase by approximately $65,000, due mainly to increases in towing revenue sharing, prisoners cell block and false alarm revenue, according to the budget document.

There was discussion about adding an RCMP position in the future, but that was listed as unfunded. It could still go ahead at some point, but perhaps not in this budget year.

Fire and Protective Services Fire Chief Lindsay Holm took council through the fire and protective services budget. He said they “held the line” on the majority of their budget.

There are no expected changes in 2021 revenues.

For special constables, wages and benefits expenses are projected to increase compared to 2020 by approximately $38,700.

Maintenance, materials and supplies are expected to go up by $22,000.

There was considerable discussion about adding a deputy commander CSO position to address issues in the downtown area.

What Holm said he was seeking to use the CSOs to the maximum under the legislation and start to “engage” with the people in the downtown and come up with solutions. For now, though, that potential position is listed as “unfunded.”

For the fire department, wages and benefits in 2021 are expected to increase approximately $36,000 due to the cost of living adjustment.

Capital expenditures are estimated to be $370,000 covering two items: a fire pumper/ heavy rescue vehicle, as well as a replacement bylaw vehicle.

The fire pumper cost is spread out over two years at an overall budgeted cost of $600,000; the bylaw vehicle is budgeted at $70,000 but Holm thought they might be able to obtain something for perhaps $20,000-$30,000 less than that.

Planning and Development Normally a big-expense area due to the amount of capital and downtown revitalization work that has taken place in previous years, in 2021 there is only one major capital item listed to go ahead: the sidewalk connection from the 100th Street service road to Territorial Dr. for $50,000.

The most significant major unfunded project in this area is extensive work that would address the failing intersection between Co-op and Sobeys on Territorial Drive. Director of Planning and Development Jennifer Niesink indicated they wanted to see the province involved in funding that issue.

“This intersection is getting to be worse and worse as we go, and the traffic continues to increase,” said Niesink.

Revenues are expected to go up $25,000 while overall expenditures are expected to decrease $18,000 in this area.

vincial deficits and exploding government debt.

Putting an economy into lockdown was assuredly going to reduce tax revenues and increase transfers to individuals and businesses to ameliorate the devastation wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic.

But it only became clear this summer the extent of the fiscal damage: a federal deficit of $343.2 billion for the current fiscal year ending in March, and a federal debt exceeding $1 trillion or just under 50 per cent of gross domestic product.

It will be difficult to ratchet back all the support measures at once. And tax revenues are unlikely to recover quickly as employment growth seems to be slowing down.

So the attention must swing to how to sustain large deficits, wind them down and gradually slow down the debt accumulation.

Much as politicians will try to deny it, they will inevitably start to think about how to bring in more money.

And that has to come from individuals and businesses (which are also, ultimately, owned by individuals).

Here’s a list of some current and potential tax and quasi-tax grabs that governments at home and abroad might choose to use – or raise extortionately if they already exist: Personal income tax: This is the biggest revenue earner. The cries of “make them pay their fair share” will be trained on higher-income people, which has included the middle class of late.

Ah, those Christmas memories

Teaching young children that it’s better to give than to receive is always an important lesson, but especially so at Christmas. Unless you’re a child of mine, in which case such lessons might end in a disastrous event involving innocent little old ladies, ominous threats, and scalded eyeballs.

Allow me to explain.

When my son Chris was about twelve, we lived in Manitoba. It was Christmas time and a spirit of generosity and good will was in the air.

I’d baked a wide array of yummy treats that month, far more than we’d ever consume ourselves.

Buttery spritz, crumbly shortbread, and thumbprint cookies, as well as gooey butter tarts, spicy gingerbread and the ever-present sugar cookie, were only a few.

It seemed a shame not to share them with those who weren’t able to bake for themselves.

So, I decided Chris and I would take an attractive selection of treats to several seniors in our town, beginning with an elderly woman who lived up the street.

With a smile I told Chris to pay close attention, since this was a fine example of spreading Christmas cheer. It sounds like the perfect teachable moment, don’t you think?

Wrong!

Insistent that we warm ourselves before the fireplace and visit, that first, sweet, little old lady haltingly led us into the

living room. Her eyesight had failed her the last few years which was why she’d come to live with her nephew and his wife.

Chris and I sat down in front of the roaring blaze and I glanced around the room while holding out my hands to the heat.

“My nephew is a wonderful painter,” she said proudly, squinting sightlessly at the wall.

Five alleged Westside gang members appear in Lloydminster court after 150 km police pursuit

Five alleged Westside street gang members made their first appearance in court after an arrest that saw multiple RCMP detachments team up to catch them.

Tonia Cantel, 22, from North Battleford, Juanita Wahpistikwan, 21, from Big Island Cree Nation, Kyle Lajimodiere from Cold Lake, and two youths from Big Island Lake Cree Nation were arrested after a 150-kilometre police pursuit.

It all started in Lashburn on Nov. 20 when Maidstone RCMP got a call that a grey Honda was stolen from a business by three men dressed in red.

The caller told police the men fled east on Hwy 16 in the grey Honda and that a small red Ford car was following the Honda.

Maidstone RCMP alerted the RCMP Roving Traffic Unit (RTU) - which was already on Hwy 16 – to be on the lookout for the stolen car. The RTU is a mobile traffic enforcement team. The RTU spotted the Honda and followed it before activating their lights in an attempt to get the driver to pullover but the driver didn’t stop. Instead, the car turned around and drove west on Hwy 16 at a high rate of speed.

Maidstone RCMP alerted nearby detachments to be on the lookout for the Honda. The Saskatchewan RCMP Protection and Response Team (PRT) was activated. The PRT – created by the province in 2017 - helps tackle rural crime. The PRT consists of officers from RCMP detachments and municipal police forces, commercial vehicle enforcement officers with expanded powers, and conservation

officers. Their goal is to improve police response to emergency calls.

The Saskatchewan RCMP Highway Patrol and the Lloydminster RCMP were also asked to help track the stolen grey Honda. RCMP Highway Patrol officers respond to 911 calls.

Police were informed that the Lashburn Fire Department got a call that a small red car was on fire east of Lashburn so their focus was now on catching the stolen grey Honda.

The RCMP PRT spotted the Honda travelling west on Hwy 16, west of the Marshall Weigh Station and then head east on Kempton Road towards Hwy 303. Eight police vehicles – from Maidstone RCMP, Lloydminster RCMP and the RCMP RTU – fanned out and patrolled the huge rural area around Lashburn.

Maidstone RCMP found

the grey Honda about 60 kilometres north of Lashburn headed west on Hwy 3, near Paradise Hill. They observed the Honda turn north on Range Road 797 towards Frenchman Butte.

Onion Lake RCMP and Turtleford RCMP were asked to be on the lookout for the Honda.

Turtleford RCMP set up a tire deflation device on Township Road 540, which forced the Honda to a stop.

When police searched the Honda they found a sawed-off modified rifle, ammunition, a machete, a BB pistol and several knives.

Maidstone and Turtleford RCMP arrested Cantel, Wahpistikwan, Lajimodiere and two youths without incident. The youths can’t be named in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act. RCMP say the five are members of the Westside street gang.

They were all charged with theft of a vehicle, storing a prohibited firearm, four counts of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, two counts of carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a firearm without a license, being a vehicle with an unauthorized firearm, possessing a prohibited firearm with accessible ammunition without registration, possession a firearm with an altered serial number, endangering the safety of the public, and flight from police.

The charges against the five haven’t been proven in court.

Anyone with information regarding the ownership, occupants or whereabouts of the small red car, on Friday, Nov. 20 at around 3 p.m. in and around Lashburn, Sask., is asked to call Maidstone RCMP at 306-893-4800.

Cantell is now scheduled to appear in Lloydminster Provincial Court on Dec. 17 to enter a plea.

Wahpistikwan has a show cause hearing in Lloydminster Provincial Court Dec. 17.

A North Battleford man accused of breaking into a home in Stanley Mission

and assaulting the resident was denied bail in La Ronge Provincial Court Nov. 26.

Brandon Holmes, 27, was arrested in October.

hiding in a cabin a few kilomotres from Stanley Mission after stealing a boat to flee the area.

According to police, they got a call at about 2:30 a.m. on Oct. 5 that an

armed man was in a residence. They searched the home but the suspect had fled. They identified the suspect as Holmes from North Battleford.

Several hours later, at

about 2:30 p.m., the RCMP located Holmes at a cabin and arrested him without incident. He was charged with two counts of break and enter, assault, discharging a firearm with

intent, and carrying a concealed weapon.

Holmes is scheduled to appear next in La Ronge Provincial Court on Dec. 21 to elect how he wants to be tried.

Men accused of killing Braden Bull remain in custody, next appear in court Jan. 6

Two men charged with second-degree murder in connection to the death of Braden Richard Bull of Little Pine First Nation appeared in Lloydminster court Dec. 2 and their matters were adjourned.

Twenty-four-year-old Vega Bear was arrested in September and twenty-sixyear-old Branden Dillon was arrested in October.

Bull’s body was found near a highway on Onion Lake Cree Nation Jan. 21, 2020. Bull was last seen on Jan. 7 and he was reported missing on Jan. 20.

On Dec. 6 at approximately 6:30 p.m., police officers located Swiftwolfe driving a stolen vehicle with a female passenger on Highway 40, near Sweet Grass First Nation.

Police officers activated their vehicle emergency lights and sirens. The vehicle refused to stop for police and fled at a high rate of speed. Due to the violent nature of the individual fleeing, police officers initiated a pursuit.

Saskatchewan RCMP Crime Reduction Team officers deployed a tire deflation device on Highway 40 to stop the vehicle fleeing from police. The deployment was successful.

The vehicle stopped at the Table Mountain turnoff on Highway 40, east of Sweet Grass First Nation.

Swiftwolfe and the female occupant of the vehicle were arrested without incident. A search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of a loaded firearm within reach of the driver.

The female arrested with Jonathan Swiftwolfe has been identified as 24-year-old Cassandra Fox, who was wanted on numerous Criminal Code warrants, including assault with a weapon and failure to comply with a release order.

“The Nation has now experienced three deaths directly related to drugs and gang activity within the last two months, along

with numerous high speed chases and violent crimes,” said Onion Lake Cree Nation when declaring a state of emergency Jan. 24, 2020.

Saskatchewan RCMP COVID-related calls reach 3,300; 49 result in charges Submitted by Saskatchewan RCMP From March 1 to Nov. 30, the Saskatchewan RCMP received a total of 3,300 COVID-related calls for service. Of these, 49 have resulted in charges.

The vast majority of COVID-related calls for service were resolved by educating individuals about the Public Health Orders in place and the potential health and enforcement consequences that can result from non-compliance with the PHO. As police officers, we are responsible for ensuring our

actions do not put others at risk while doing our part to slow the spread of the virus. We need you to do the same and this starts by following and familiarizing yourself with the PHOs. From Nov. 1 to 30, Saskatchewan RCMP received 342 COVID-related calls for service: · 128 complaints of individuals not self-isolating; · 92 large gathering complaints; · 20 masking complaints; · 14 traveller check complaints; and · 88 other COVID-related complaints.

Of these calls for ser-

vice, police have charged seven individuals under the Province’s Public Health Orders for contravening Sec. 61 of The Public Health Act, 1994. The location of the charges are identified in accordance with the provincial government’s COVID-19 map, which provides detailed information on the location of cases across Saskatchewan divided into 13 zones. · Four charges to individuals not self-isolating despite being advised to do so by local health authorities. These charges occurred in the following

zones: Far North West, North Central (x2), and Far North Central. · Three charges to individuals for large gatherings.

These charges occurred in the following zones: Far North East, Far North Central and Far North West.

Each charge is a Summary Offence Ticket Information, under a Provincial Statute.

These charges are not a criminal offence. For this reason, the names of the individuals charged will not be released.

How will we deal with our debt?

Tariffs and other import fees or duties: The official average tariffs in Canada are about two per cent, but that average includes imports from Mexico and the U.S., which are duty-free. Excluding them, the average rate is substantially higher. It can’t be raised much more, owing to World Trade Organization obligations.

Wealth or estate taxes: Canada doesn’t have the former and dropped the latter when it adopted a capital gains tax in the 1970s. Neither would pull in much money and could cause a lot of resentment.

Permit, application, licence, registration fees: Sneaky ways to gouge, they could be jacked up.

Inflation or printing money: This is already occurring. The Bank of Canada is buying federal debt, effectively monetizing it. As there’s considerable slack in the economy,

this has not shown up in the consumer price index or other price indexes – yet.

While some fringe economists believe this can go on indefinitely, nations such as Venezuela have proved it can’t.

The United Kingdom had to get an International Monetary Fund bailout in the 1970s when it tried to do it and Canada was well on the way in the 1990s, when our debt last skyrocketed.

While interest rates are near zero, investors tend to revise the rates on what they deem bad risks, such as financial incontinent nations, so they will pay ever-rising yields on their escalating debt at some point. It’s never pretty.

• It’s December, the last month of 2020! Although it has been a very challenging year, we are grateful to have had the opportunity to serve our communities another year.

• NEW PROGRAM ALERT – Raise The Grade Hybrid! You can now access this program through Zoom or in person! This exciting new program offers support to youth 14-18 (grade 9-12) through homework support, access to computers (with high speed internet), youth engagement, mentoring and life after school.

Register online or come to our office for more information. This program started October 6th and runs Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the school year.

• We’ve taken on the 2020/2021 School Year; however, it does not look like other years have! Following all guidelines as prescribed by the Government of Saskatchewan and Saskatchewan Health Authority, the health and safety of our members and staff are of utmost importance!

• It saddens us not to be able to offer our satellite site Before & After School Programs. We continue to work with our local Schools, guided by the Saskatchewan Health Authority and Government of Saskatchewan on when we can resume this service. Please watch our website and Facebook page for further updates.

• Our Drop-in Program continues in December, membership forms are available on our website or at the office. Please note, this is no longer a “drop-in” program, members must be preregistered.

• There are limited spaces, so make sure you register by calling the office between 8:30am and 3:30pm Monday to Friday.

Space is limited to 15 children (5-9 years of age) and 15 youth (10-14 years of age).

• Innovation Credit Union Grub Club continues to take place weekly on Wednesdays (home cooked, delicious meal) and we are incredibly grateful for the continued support of Innovation Credit Union.

• Our Annual Christmas Supper cannot be held in person this year so we’re doing it “take out” style! Registration is on now and pick up of the meals will be December 16th from 2:00pm – 5:30pm.

• The last day of programming is December 18th, 2020. It is Early Dismissal day and our After School Program at the Club will be open early, so registered members can head to our programming as soon as they’re done school!

A pursuit through the park

By Sarah Beauregard and Johannie Dufour / Translated by Katya Teague nce upon a time, in the town of Mount Christmas, the annual snowman contest was underway. This friendly competition in the park was a highly anticipated event that the town’s residents had enjoyed for generations.

That day in December, the Morrow family was hard at work on their creation as snowflakes fell softly around them. Jeremy, a loving single father, and his kids, a teenager named Samuel and a young girl named Alice, wanted their snowman to be unique.

As the family put the finishing touches on their snow king, Alice noticed that the large carrot they wanted to use for its nose was missing. Looking around, she spotted a squirrel running away with the vegetable in its mouth.

“Come back here, you silly squirrel,” the little girl shouted. “That’s OUR carrot!”

Of course, the squirrel didn’t listen and continued to flee with its prize. Without a second thought, Alice took off after the creature. She wasn’t going to let a thief ruin her chance to win the contest.

“Alice,” cried Jeremy. “It’s too late, just let it go.”

Focused on her mission, the girl ignored her father and kept running. Jeremy quickly set off in pursuit, leaving Samuel in charge of watching their things.

Alice was surprisingly fast for a seven-year-old. She sprinted across the soccer field, clambered up the sledding hill and raced past the playground. Finally, she caught up to the squirrel who’d scurried into the hole of a tree trunk.

Alice knelt by the tree and looked in the hole. Inside, she could see the frightened animal clutching the carrot. Behind the creature were two baby squirrels looking very scared. At that moment, Alice heard a familiar whistling sound beside her. It was Octave, the wise and magical cardinal who watched over Mount Christmas.

“Octave, this squirrel stole our carrot,” Alice complained. “We need it to win the snowman contest.”

“I see,” Octave said. “I’m sure the squirrel didn’t mean to upset you. He only wanted to feed his family.”

“Just like when Dad goes to the grocery store,” Alice realized. “Except squirrels don’t have any money to buy food.”

“Look in your heart,” Octave said, as he flew away. “You’ll figure out what to do.”

Alice glanced back at the squirrel who looked apologetic as he handed her the carrot. The girl accepted the vegetable, but she promptly broke it in half. Alice handed one of the pieces to the squirrel family and smiled as the creatures cheerfully squeaked.

By then, Jeremy arrived out of breath and Alice ran to him. She was so happy

about her good deed that she jumped into his arms and they both went tumbling into a snowbank.

“Come on, Dad! Let’s go find Samuel and finish our masterpiece,” she exclaimed.

In the end, the Morrow family’s snowman won first prize for creativity. To celebrate their success, the trio headed to the Joyous Delights restaurant where they ordered three big slices of carrot cake.

Continued from Page 4 Corporate income tax: A significant revenue stream, this tax hasn’t been raised significantly since doing so deters investment and hiring.

It also lowers potential returns on investment, discouraging venture capital.

It’s difficult to raise this tax significantly when Canada must compete for investment with lower-tax nations such as the United States, which lowered its corporate income tax by 40 per cent three years ago.

Capital gains tax: Generally a part of income tax but treated separately.

Lowering it can actually bring in more money, as investors and speculators turn over their holdings more often. However, the optics of this are bad if other taxes are being raised.

Sales taxes: These are already substantial, particularly in central and eastern Canadian provinces. These are considered regressive, since lower income people spend almost all their income on goods and services that are taxed.

Value added or goods and services taxes: Called the former in most of the world and the latter in Canada and India, this tax is paid at every stage of production, distribution or transfer by businesses and consumers. Currently at five per cent in Canada, it’s also regressive. But low-income individuals receive a rebate from the government. Increasing it could hurt overall economic activity but rake in billions.

Excise taxes: These are taxes on gasoline, diesel fuel, alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and other discretionary expenses. However, these are already high, and further increases could encourage smuggling, illicit production and black market sales.

Capital tax: This is paid by financial institutions in Canada to finance part of the cost of regulatory oversight. It’s tempting to raise this since it’s a hidden tax.

Land transfer tax: This is paid when a real estate property is sold. This increases the friction, as economists term the costs of transactions, making real estate more expensive.

Foreign resident investor tax: This is paid by non-citizens when they purchase property in British Columbia and Ontario.

Carbon taxes: These are paid throughout Canada and increase the cost of fuel, and thus of transport and heating.

Transit taxes: These can be added at the fuel pump or to utility bills. They’re in place in B.C. and other provinces. The money ostensibly goes to regional transit services or transportation infrastructure.

Keepsake Photo Members of the Historic Battleford Lions Club met Friday last week at Lions Park in Battleford - masked, bubbled and distanced - for a photo at their namesake location – the Historic Battleford Lions Club Park.

The park was the former location of a service station, and the Town of Battleford brought the Lions on board to help develop and take care of a park for the downtown area, says Marie Milnthorpe.

It was dedicated by the Princess Royal, Princess Anne, during her royal visit to Saskatchewan in June of 2004 in commemoration of Battleford’s 100th anniversary, Milnthorp explained. Located in the middle of downtown Battleford, the park features lawn, flowerbeds, a gazebo and picnic tables, all with a backdrop of conifers. Last year, a project initiated by a young resident, Avery Donahue, who recruited grandparents and the local Community Spirit Group, saw the stringing of lights throughout the trees to add to a festive feeling.

The Lions, this year, have seen to the lighting of the gazebo as well.

Saskatchewan films and TV still viable in growing market

With demand growing worldwide for film and television productions, Saskatchewan should jump at the chance to capitalize on Canadian-made content, an industry lobby group said.

That was the message Ken Alecxe, interim executive director at the Saskatchewan Media Production Industry Association, wanted people to take from his presentation during the Saskatchewan Economic Development Association’s annual conference on Dec. 2 when he spoke about the film industry in

Saskatchewan.

Film and television production in Canada generated $9 billion in revenue in 2019 with Saskatchewan only receiving about four per cent of the pie with about $200-400 million of revenue, Alecxe said .

Alecxe cited such programs as Wynonna Earp, which generated 1,490 full-time jobs and $90 million in just four seasons of production, and Heartland, which generated over 4,500 full-time jobs, $351 million in GDP over 11 seasons, and used 1,411 vendors in Calgary, High River, where it was shot, and other surrounding communities.

The supply chain for film and television from pre-production to post is immense, he said, and Saskatchewan communities have opportunities to fill those supply needs to their own benefit, including things like equipment rentals, construction material, hotels, catering, wardrobes and vehicles, to name a few.

“We should be doing more procurement and local value-added and we can. So I was talking to Creative Saskatchewan, the provincial government agency, about this and just saying, ‘let’s sit down and talk about this’.”

The Saskatchewan film industry has been modestly

successful given the challenges they have been facing over the last 10 years, Alecxe said, but there are a lot of lost opportunities with the province’s best and brightest finding work elsewhere.

Production companies are willing to shell out the money for new content.

According to an article in Variety, Disney, TimeWarner and NBCUniversal will be spending $1-2 billion each for original programming in the 2020

fiscal year.

“It’s a rapidly growing market. In fact, it’s probably one of the few markets that’s been actually making some money during COVID. They’re expanding, if anything there are more streamers out there than ever before. It’s a $120 billion global industry last year.”

Current work by the association is trying to fix that with plans to build an eye on Saskatchewan community-based stream programs where producers sit down with communities while they’re still considering where their production is going to take them.

Alecxe said the conversation will be going to Saskatchewan Economic Development Association, the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities, Municipalities of Saskatchewan, and the Saskatchewan Chambers of Commerce to find partners and collaborators on a virtual production guide for the province for the spring which will focus on getting the word out to the world about Saskatchewan talent and locations.

N.B. fire department urges caution around ice Staff

North Battleford Fire Department has issued a news release urging people to use caution in activities around or on the ice.

Skating, ice fishing and riding snow machines across

frozen bodies of water are considered high risk right now, according to the fire department.

This is attributed to factors such as water current flow, depth of water, mild temperatures and melting and freezing cycles making the current ice brittle

and unstable.

The department is urging extreme caution at this time and making sure safety measures are in place such as: Making sure someone knows where you are.

To carry a cellphone in a wa-

terproof carrier.

If possible, test the ice first for depth and have an emergency kit with you and your party.

If you end up in the water, do your best to stay calm and get to the edge, and try to remove yourself from the water.

If you witness someone fall through the ice, call 911.

Around moving bodies of water such as rivers, the fire department states that a rule of thumb is that the ice is never safe and you should avoid activities on and around them.

Government offers up to $5,000 for small businesses for COVID-19 adaptations

Howard Weitzel is celebrated his 99th birthday on Dec. 8 at Villa Pascal.

Family delivered a cake for the enjoyment of Howard and his fellow residents at Villa Pascal, but of course they were unable to take part due to COVID-19 restrictions. Weitzel is well known as a horseshoes champion, having organized and participated in several tournaments in the area over the years. He has won multiple provincial and Canadian championships and is a member of the Horseshoe Canada Hall of Fame. According to Richard Hiebert’s article for the News-Optimist in 2013, Weitzel won 15 men’s open provincial championships, won the Men’s Canadian Open in 1990 at age 67, in 2000 won the World Men’s Championship in Genola, Minn., and in 2012 won the Canadian Senior Men’s Championship. The government of Saskatchewan announced a new “Strong Recovery Adaptation Rebate” (SRAR) to help small businesses who have had to come up with ways to stay in business with all the new rules around operating safely in the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trade and Export Development Minister Jeremy Harrison said that small businesses are the “heartbeat of our economy” and employs over 150,000 people.

In a ministerial statement in the Legislature on Dec. 7, Harrison said, “These small businesses and their employees have been adversely impacted by the global COVID-19 pandemic, while playing their part in protecting public health and reducing the spread of the pandemic.

Our government acknowledges their critical effort, and is committed to helping them remain strong, during, and after the pandemic, through programs that provide the essential assistance that they need to survive these challenging times.

“One such program is the new Strong Recovery Adaptation Grant, the first of its kind in Canada, which our government will launch in the coming weeks.

“The rebate will help small businesses adapt their business models to address the unprecedented challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Some of these adjustments, businesses have made or will make, include changing the use of square footage, installing physical infrastructure to comply with COVID-19 mitigation guidelines, upgrading technology, such as websites to enhance their business.”

It’s also retroactive to near the start of the pandemic, from shortly after Saskatchewan went on

Harrison said, “This program is for Saskatchewan businesses that employ less than 100 people; have, or will incur, expenses to adapt their business model between April 1, 2020, so retroactive, and February 28, 2021; plan to continue operating, and have experienced at least a 30 per cent revenue decline compared to 2019. Eligible applicants will receive a rebate of 50 per cent, up to a maximum of $5,000 for a $10,000 expenditure.

The rebate amounts will be determined based on those expenditures, or changing business models.

“Further rebates will be based on the business expenditures incurred between April 1 2020, and February 28, 2021, program will be launched and applications will be available in the coming days.”

He concluded, “Our economy will weather the impact of the fall surge of COVID-19, and our government will continue to support small businesses throughout the economic recovery.”

NDP response NDP Small Business Critic Aleana Young responded with a take on “’Twas the Night Before Christmas.”

She started in rhyming couplets, saying, “’Twas three weeks before Christmas and look what they’ve done, “The Sask. Party finally

realized that for business, COVID, no fun.

“For gyms and for cafés, accountants and brewers, “The Sask. Party support for small business has been down in the sewers.

“So please listen, do better, and support mom and pop shops.

“For Saskatchewan economy, because this is where the buck stops.”

Shifting gears, Young said, “So thank you to the government for finally acknowledging that their piecemeal and puzzling approach has been inefficient and insufficient for small business. However, we are glad to see them, the government, adopt a program that we called for on November 18.”

She added, “I’ll remind the minister that business can’t survive or thrive, If COVID is raging out of control. The measures announced will do nothing to help businesses for whom adaptations are unavailable, and their small business support program hasn’t been fixed or made accessible to businesses who haven’t been closed by public health orders, but have seen their revenues collapse. These remain problems.

“In closing, I’d like to thank small businesses for their leadership and advocating adapting and investing, to keep themselves afloat and keep Saskatchewan safe.”

Nurse texts dad, asking for ventilators, and a prototype is together in six days Saskatchewan-made ventilator production approved in a little over 8 months

A few days after the global pandemic was declared, Jim Boire got a text from his daughter.

Rebecca Erker, a Royal University Hospital intensive care unit nurse.

She is working on her PhD with the respiratory research centre in Saskatoon. As a result, she had a good understanding of what was at stake with COVID-19, and reason to be concerned.

Thankfully, Boire is president of RMD Engineering, a Saskatoon firm whose expertise ranges from beamlines for the Canada Light Source Synchrotron to industrial processes in potash mining, and a whole lot in between. They’ve worked in uranium, agriculture, and a lot of research and development. His company (which Boire owns with four other partners, all employees) had the expertise and capacity to do something about it. And so they did.

“I got my text from my daughter on March 18. March 24, we had our first prototype built,” Boire said by phone on Dec. 3.

Now the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) announced on that December day it would be taking delivery of 100 new ventilators, known as the EUV-SK1, in short order.

The first 20 are ready to go out the door, and the company has most of the parts in place to build as many as 1,000 units.

RMD Engineering Inc.’s subsidiary, One Health Medical Technologies, recently received COVID-19 Medical Device Authorization from Health Canada for an inhouse designed, developed and manufactured ventilator. Collaborating with the University of Saskatchewan and SHA subject matter experts,

RMD Engineering was able to successfully prototype an emergency use ventilator for Health Canada certification.

According to a Ministry of Health press release on Dec. 3, there are currently approximately 650 ventilators available in Saskatchewan’s health system, enough to meet the need. They range from high-end critical care type ventilators to more basic sub-acute ventilators. The SHA’s purchase from RMD will increase that number to about 750.

But getting from a text to a prototype for an approved ventilator wasn’t easy, nor was it quick process.

Very early on, the deans of both the University of Saskatchewan College of Engineering and College of Medicine got involved. Top respiratory technologies, respirologists, and ICU nurses were brought in within short order to develop this totally new product. Boire said, “As soon as we asked for them to help, they helped with open arms. And you have a team like that that knows exactly what something is supposed to do. And the capability to build something that can do that, then all you need are the codes and standards and validation equipment to make sure it meets the required level of quality.”

Asked if it was like converting to war production in 1940, Boire said, “I’ll tell you, that’s exactly the way it started.

“It felt like a military operation, if I was ever involved in a military operation, but I wasn’t.

However, as soon as we got through the point where this is going to work, this design is going to work, here’s what we have to do now, a group of people said, ‘You know what? We get it. This is like a military operation, everybody’s doing this, let’s just go go go.’

“They stopped and said, “You know what, it’s probably time now that everybody starts looking at this as the biggest humanitarian effort this company has ever done.” And it was just an awesome way to get out of that firefighting mode. And then one of our instrumentation leads said, ‘This is not a sprint. You guys can’t keep working 18 hours a day. This is going to be a marathon.’

“And it really helped pull the whole team back down to the ground, and get them out of that adrenaline mode, and really start focusing on the work breakdown, structure in the tasks at hand, and who’s responsible for what and what’s this timing going look like and when is this going in.”

His references to firefighting are authentic, as the company has built support equipment for water bombers.

Worldwide shortages They soon realized that the whole world was looking for critical parts, which almost immediately went into short supply and were being hoarded. Some items, like wire, saw huge price spikes. So RMD quickly realized it had to work on this project quietly, and develop a product that avoided critical path component shortages.

Boire said, “Instead of using the newer, more conventional turbine method, we knew those would be a hot commodity, when the world proclaimed they needed over a million of these. As you can imagine, that turbine is a complicated piece of equipment. We went the other way. We went back to being simple,” Boire said. “We have very, very few moving parts in our machine. There’s four moving parts.”

He explained, “This is an emergency use ventilator, so it needs to be used in the hospital or

in an emergency hospital situation where they have line medical air and line oxygen so that’ll be running at 50 PSI. And then we control everything with proportional solenoids.”

There are two tubes coming into the device, which is in a large Pelican case, and two tubes coming out. They had them on hand because of another government project they’re working on. The lid includes an IBM screen.

“They’re all high reliability components,” he said. It runs off 110 volt AC power.

You set it up beside the bed, hook up the lines, hook up the power and put in the appropriate prescription.

High standards They had previously made the biomedical imaging line for the Canadian Light Source, but they weren’t a medical device manufacturer.

The list of specifications, protocols and standards was extensive.

And those standards, in some ways, simplify things. Boire said, “We don’t have any proprietary

stuff on there, so all of the circuits, all the nebulizers everything fits on there. All that is covered off in standards. And I think that’s one of the biggest things to understand is when you go down this path, it is very prescriptive on everything.

The machine has to do all of the standards it has to meet, including operational standards.”

He added, “It’s probably a foot tall, the stack of standards, when you put them together. You have to meet the electrical requirements, the operational requirements, the safety requirements. You don’t get to just build something in your backyard, and then tell everybody you have it. When you go and look at the requirements, when you submit to Health Canada, it is an armful. And I think we’ve spent just about $30,000 on standards. There is a lot of standards that you have to meet.”

It is very unique, he said.

“We looked at the critical components like flow meters, how you measure flow and pressure, because we’re talking very low

pressures that have to be measured very accurately.”

This is where the consultation with respiratory technicians, anesthesiology repair technicians from the health region made a difference. Because there was such high demand for ventilator components, he said, “You have to figure out how to do that with readily available things that are very safe.”

“So when we started doing our production testing, we had to do accelerated testing on components that, in the period of two or three weeks, we could get an effective 25 million cycles on a component that we designed.”

By the end of December, they’ll likely have the remaining 80 units ready.

They’ve also built a training version to be used in remote areas or to train people on a simulation patient or a “test lung.”

They submitted their application to Health Canada on May 5. “In that period of time is when we refined our design, did our testing, had to send it out to third party,” Boire said.

Survived by her loving children: Ron (Marilyn) Pasutto, Vernon, BC; Marina Pasutto (Jack) Lloydminster, AB; Carol Morrison, North Battleford, SK; Joy (Dutch) Mauws, Kitscoty, AB. EULOGY: Good afternoon to all of you here and to all of you at home watching remotely as we gather to honor mom today. Our mom was born January 21, 1926 on her parents farm, Joseph and Rosa Vidotto. She was the eldest of two girls. Her younger sister’s name was Irene. She attended Vance School for two years and when the Ada School was built in 1935 she attended there. The Ada School was named after her because she was the first baby born in the community. Today a building marker marks the spot where the school once stood. Their little family also boarded teachers that worked for Ada School. Mom enjoyed music even as a child and took violin lessons which she really enjoyed. At 10 years of age she had an appendicitis operation and her sister contracted scarlet fever at the same time. This meant mom had to be quarantined after the operation. She was sent to stay at various neighbors while Irene recuperated at home. Tragedy struck young in her life when penicillin poisoning took her father at the young age of 58. She was only 18 at the time. Working the farm with her mom and sister was laborious but they pressed on and with the help of neighbors continued farming.

On September 3, 1947 mom married a long time good friend of hers, Mario Pasutto, after he returned from World War II in 1946.

They built a home on mom’s parents’ quarter. Children came soon after that Ron David, Marina Armalina Marie, Carol Josephine and Joy Annette. They farmed until retirement took them to Cut Knife, SK. Mom had great devotion to her children. Her love was strong and her faith was evident as we all attended church regularly in Baldwinton then Cut Knife. She was a CWL member for a time as well. We would soon be introduced to 4-H and all us girls took either cooking, sewing or knitting/crocheting. She was a 4-H club leader for many of these classes. She enjoyed gardening and preserving the produce that grew from two very large gardens.

The farm was a mixed farm where she tended to cattle, pigs, chickens and turkeys. Canned meats, fruit and vegetables adorned our cellar and deep freezers were packed with meats and produce. Berry picking was also a must and all partook of the task. As well she spent many hours alongside dad in the fields. I can safely say the farm sustained our family. We were fortunate as we had our Nonna (her mom) living in the same yard to help with our care when we were young. She enjoyed travelling to various locations.

California to see relatives, the Dakotas, British Columbia, Alaska and Italy. She much enjoyed sightseeing and walking wherever she went. She took photos galore. And someone gave her the nickname “Walt Disney” because she always had a camera in her hand.

She enjoyed both old-time country and western music concerts. What brought her the most enjoyment however, was seeing her family come back to the farm on Sundays and special holidays for food and fun, playing cards and games! And I cannot forget her sincere enjoyment as she watched her grandchildren and great grandchildren participate in their sports or leisure activities. Once retired mom enjoyed the urban life in Cut Knife meeting friends at the bowling alley, TOPS, going for walks and the Roman Catholic Church. Both mom and dad enjoyed trips to North Battleford, Lloydminster and later Vernon, BC, to see their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. We in turn were always glad to see them. They also enjoyed the Casino at times. In 2006 they moved to North Battleford affording them closer access to doctors, services and family. They enjoyed their little ‘high rise apartment’. Mom made it comfortable and homey. She gradually made her “way to the top” by moving to the top floor. She especially enjoyed the views it afforded her and playing cards with new friends she met there. She continued to walk, even with the aid of a walker, up until her legs became weak. Mom was loved by many and during her final year was referred to as ‘sweetheart’, ‘adorable’, ‘granny’ and ‘Miss Ada’. To her family however, she will always be ‘Nonna’. And to her children a devoted mom and loving friend. Private Family Funeral Mass was held at St. Joseph Calasanctius Roman Catholic Church, North Battleford, SK with Fr. Phinh Do, Celebrant.

Interment will take place at Cut Knife Cemetery, Cut Knife, SK (at a later date). Memorial donations are requested to Alzheimer Society Saskatchewan, 301-2550-12th Avenue, Regina, SK S4P 3X1. It is with great sadness that the family of Sarah Ann Beaudoin (n.

Gillatt) of Maymont, SK, share news of her passing, of natural causes, on November 29, 2020, at the incredible age of 102 years. Sarah’s long life was a true testament to her hard work, perseverance, adaptability, healthy living and active community spirit. Sarah took every opportunity to enjoy life to its fullest, whether dipping her toes in the Pacific Ocean, climbing a pyramid, kissing the Blarney Stone, sailing in Cuba or riding a motorcycle—in her 80s. She enjoyed trips with family in Saskatchewan, across Canada, to the US, Mexico, Guatemala, England, Europe and Cuba, although she drew a hard line to future camping after enduring two weeks of cold, wet weather, giant mosquitoes and horseflies at Waskesiu. Though Sarah loved to travel afar, she was even prouder to have attended every graduation, ball and hockey game, music and dance recital, and wedding of those she loved. Over the years, she cherished her time spent caring for her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended families. Sarah was an avid quilter. She gifted beautiful, handstitched quilts to all her children, grandchildren, and as many great-grandchildren as she could before arthritis in her hands made quilting impossible. In 2018, Sarah celebrated her 100th birthday along with over 300 friends and family. We all had the opportunity to celebrate a life well-lived. She loved visiting with her guests, reading the cards and receiving greetings from the Queen and Canadian dignitaries. A highlight for Sarah was being selected as one of Saskatchewan’s Nation Builders in 2005. She was also proud to receive a third-generation UCW Life Membership and was awarded a ‘Canada 150’ medal on her 100th birthday. Throughout her life, Sarah worked hard but never complained. We love that she always adapted to the times and maintained an open mind about the changing world around her. At one past event, Sarah shared a somewhat risqué joke.

When one attendee commented on the inappropriateness of her joke, Sarah later thought, “Get with the times!” Today the family credits her with the phrase, but more so the mindset. Sarah’s healthy lifestyle was attributed not only to staying active, but also to keeping an active mind. Even in her later years, she remained the family’s go-to for recipes, family history, people’s names, and still remembered every birthday and anniversary in the family or community. Sarah enjoyed people around her, of all ages. She took comfort in making people happy and giving back to the community, whether making her famous donuts for the volleyball tournaments, laying a Remembrance Day wreath at the school ceremony or saying grace at pre-COVID big family dinners that had to be held in the school gym as the family grew.

Sarah spent her final years at River Heights Lodge enjoying chocolates and candies, attending church service, loving the daily entertainment, talking on the phone, watching sitcom reruns (loudly), as she read the newspaper and did the Word Search and Cryptograms. Sarah is predeceased by her husband, Walter (Chinney) in 1985; her parents, Alfred Gillatt (1968), Laura Parker (1978); step-father, Bill Penny (2001); her great-grandson, Will Skopyk (2018); her daughter-in-law Betty Beaudoin (2004) and her brother Reg Gillatt (1991). She is survived by her children, Albert (Pat) Beaudoin; Dale (Charlotte) Beaudoin; Terry (Gerald) Skopyk and Russell (Connie) Beaudoin; her sister Dorothy Belanger; 14 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and close friends. Though we are so thankful for her good health and long life, we would still have liked more time with her. We extend our thanks to Dr. Campbell, and the staff at River Heights Lodge for her kind and compassionate care. Mary is remembered and forever loved by her children: Janette (Richard) Slabaida, Phyllis (Lee) Bryant, Kathy Zawada, Carol (Jake) Oborowsky, Sharon (Blair) Mutch, David (Sherri) Zawada, Ken (Agnes) Zawada 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; her brother, Joe (Elsie) Charabin; sister-in-law, Cleo Charabin; brother-inlaw, Walter Suberlak; numerous nieces and nephews. MCDONALD: Juliet (“Julie” or “Juliette”) Rosaline McDonald (nee Combres), resident of BDCC, formerly of North Battleford, SK., passed away peacefully at the age of 96, on 30 November 2020 and will be sadly missed. “Julie” was born on the farm at Richard, Sk. on 13 March, 1924. Her first language was French.

She went to school in Richard. Then she married Reginald McDonald of the Richard area on 1 July, 1942.

They farmed until 1954 and then moved to North Battleford due to poor crops. They both worked in North Battleford. She worked in the Macleods store. But Julie’s favorite job was working for the CAA as a secretary and worked there for many years until she retired. Julie was the kindest soul you could ever meet and was always prim and proper and polite.

She was petite but took whatever life threw at her with a smile and a prayer. Few people could match her unswerving faith in God and she faithfully attended Catholic services wherever her & Reg lived all of her life. She loved having company and was always the most gracious host. Highlights of her life were marrying Reg, her trip to Paris, France to meet relatives, her & Reg’s bus trip to the Maritimes to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary and spending time with family and friends. Julie had a gift of music and picked up a violin early in life. She would play in a band at Richard dances. She also loved playing the organ.

Both instruments she learned to play by ear. Friends and neighbors would come by often to have a jam session at Reg & Julie’s home. She continued to play the organ for her fellow residents at the River Heights Lodge and the Battleford District Care Centre well into her 90s. It is with great sadness that the family of Jean Schwan (Edwards) announce her passing on November 30, 2020, at the age of 77. Jean battled Alzheimer’s since her late 60’s and her family is comforted knowing she’ll be reunited with predeceased husband Robert (2004). Jean is also predeceased by her parents, John (“Noel”) and Margaret (“Peggy”). Jean is survived by her daughter Shannon Ross (Allen) of Bonnyville, Alberta and son Richard Schwan (Sharon) of Regina, as well as her three grandsons, Collin, Brendan (and fiancé Regan), and Conor. She is also survived by her three sisters Shirley Smith, Kathy O’Hanlon, Nancy (Dennis) Milhousen and two brothers, John (Kathy) Edwards and Michael (Sharon) Edwards, as well as three nephews, two nieces and their families. On Robert’s side of the family, Jean is survived by two sister-in-laws, Marianne Benning and Joan (Floyd) Andersen, as well as several nieces, nephews and their families. Jean grew up in Battleford where she was the eldest of 5 siblings and where she met Robert. They married in 1964 and raised their two children, Shannon and Richard, in North Battleford. Jean worked as a legal secretary in North Battleford for 40 years where she was known to be hard-working, dependable and yet, had a great sense of humour. Jean always loved to have fun and her mantra was “love and laughter”. She and Robert loved to dance, curl and travel, as well as creating so many memories at their cottage at Murray Lake. Because of her kind, caring and funloving character, her friends and family created this “top ten” list of traits to describe Jean: (1) Fun; (2) Generous and giving – volunteering for numerous organizations; (3) Vivacious; (4) Devoted to family and friends; (5) Dependable work colleague; (6) Competent – except, as self-proclaimed, with anything electronic or digital; (7) Crafty – yes, in both sense of the word!; (8) Friendly; (9) Good curler, great dancer and extremely fast walker; and (10) Excellent hostess. Coyotes and a fox moving in: secure your garbage

The Walk Walk program has been put on hold for now.

The ice shacks were going out onto the lake this weekend, so there should on another site, also in be some action out there Lakeview.

Duplicate bridge was in this nice weather we’re played in the Pioneer Hall having.

The house in Lakeview Thursday evening, with top has finally been moved, so score going to Jean Lawes it has gone to a new home and Fraser Glen followed somewhere. Now progress by Anne Crozier and can continue on a new Cletus Scherman.

The bright moon all house on the same lot. One trailer has been moved out week has been nice to see and a house is being built in a clear sky, with stars all

around.

During a drive around the village it is pleasant to see the many Christmas lights out there.

The village will likely hold a lighting competition again, being that is one of the things we can do safely.

There are several homes that have the motion lights with a pretty display of colour dancing about.

Canasta was played by seven folks on Friday at the Do Drop In, so the scores could not be compared. They were just happy they enjoyed the afternoon together.

Several coyotes and a fox have been seen in the village recently, so garbage has to be taken care of properly to avoid a mess.

Dr. Ray Michaud, formerly of Spiritwood, retired in Saskatoon, passed away Dec. 2. He was 92 years old. His first practice was in Edam for a year, then Prince Albert for a couple years and finally to Spiritwood, where he practiced for his remaining years and raised his family. He was active in community services and always ready to lend a hand. After his first wife,

Helen, passed away he later married Olive. He is survived by Olive, his sons Mark and Paul, daughters Elaine, Janice and Lisa and their families.

My granddaughter Carrie (Lambert) and Neil Sandstrom have moved from Calgary to Kamloops, B.C. with his work. She followed him last weekend, along with their older son Eric and they are getting settled in their house out there. Both Carrie and Eric are able to continue working with computers on their jobs.

After the New Year, Eric

will fly to Denmark where he will attend university.

The younger son, Jake, is settled in at Pemberton, B.C. where he is employed and will be able to travel regularly to Whistler for his “ski training.”

Eric Callbeck of Meota is home after having heart problems taken care of in Saskatoon this past week.

We wish him well and a speedy recovery.

“Since March, we’ve got 40,000 to 45,000 hours in already, in the development and testing and verification side.”

This happened just as the company was in the middle of expanding their facility, much of which was accomplished with their own staff.

“We’re probably going have to hire another 12 to 15 people, and train them,” he said, noting training is a big part when dealing with healthcare devices, especially when it comes to things like quality control.

“We’ve currently got 15 people now on the manufacturing side of it and the programing side, and the testing side.”

They are working on getting their Medical Device Single Audit Program (MDSAP) certification, which he calls a “quality control program on steroids.”

Asked if they were going to stick with it, he said, “We’re going to stay as a medical manufacturer.”

Boire added, “The medical device manufacturing will just be another part of our company. We’re going to stay with theses rugged use ventilators, like this

emergency type ventilator.

We do not intend to compete with Panasonic or anybody at Philips, anybody that’s making mainstream, high-volume ventilators. We’ll stay with a rugged use ventilator, because unfortunately, when you look at the numbers and look at this type of virus, the feeling is this could be around for a long time. And the government is coming out with a program that those of us that produced a medical device will have the opportunity over the next couple of years to convert that to a full medical device licence.

And we’ll take advantage

of that just so we can make sure we keep this, here in Saskatchewan. We’ve already spent the money.

Whatever happens now, happens.

“So we want to make sure that we leverage that into good technology and good expertise for the years to come, not just, ‘Oh well, there’s no more ventilators to make, we’ll just do something else.’

Boire said they found that Saskatchewan really needs to focus more on trades and “getting trades educated with higher-end things.”

“We have to bring manufacturing back to Saskatchewan,” he said.

They were going to do it Why did they choose 1,000 units?

Boire explained, “Saskatchewan said, ‘Our numbers show we need 1,000 ventilators in Saskatchewan.’

“We’re from Saskatchewan. We said we’re going to pick to do this, based on what we can do in this province.

And what we did instead is while we were building this, we’ve built a whole project management system and basically a tool kit that if need be, if this type of ventilator is required in other places, we now have a system that we can go and work with another company

very similar to ours, that has similar manufacturing capabilities and get them up and running to produce locally to them.”

Boire said, “If we sold, half of what we had expected to make, we will break even. But again, it’s not why we did it.”

“This initiative exemplifies the spirit of collaboration and entrepreneurship we’re so proud of in our province,” Health Minister Paul Merriman said in a release. “Our government fully supports this work, and we are pleased that residents in Saskatchewan and across the country will have access to this equipment, if they need it.”

provided at Regina General Hospital. The vaccine will be for approximately 1,950 people and will be delivered to health care workers providing direct care to COVID-19 patients.

The first recipients will be health care workers in ICUs, emergency departments and COVID units at Regina General and Pasqua Hospitals and staff at testing and assessment centres. Pilot recipients will receive a first dose, and then receive a second dose 21 days later.

Phase one is then expected to begin late December, 2020, with 202,052 doses expected within the first quarter of 2021. This includes expected weekly allocations of 10,725 doses of Pfizer vaccine.

The Moderna vaccine is expected to arrive in January and weekly allocations are currently being finalized. This plan is flexible, and can be moved up as more supplies come in.

This first phase will focus on immunizing “priority populations” at a higher risk of exposure to the virus or more at risk of serious illness – health care workers, elderly residents in care homes, seniors over 80, and residents in northern remote communities.

The second phase is expected in April, 2021 and continue priority population immunization in a sliding scale, with seniors over 75, then seniors 70 and so on. The goal in this phase is to immunize everyone in the province.

Distribution will occur at public health clinics and other vaccination delivery sites across the province.

As well, there are plans in progress on safe storage of vaccines and sequenced distribution across the province. The Pfizer vaccine in particular must be stored at -70. Some equipment has been ordered or is coming; there are also some freezers available al-

ready.

There will be a public communications plan including weekly updates and news releases. A website will also be set up.

There will also be a significant public relations campaign to provide accurate and timely information about the safety of the vaccine and the importance of getting vaccinated, and that will begin this month.

The vaccine distribution will be a massive undertaking, said Merriman.

But he noted “Saskatchewan has a very strong history of immunizations.”

He pointed to the delivery of the flu vaccine, as well as childhood vaccinations. It was also noted that Dr. Shahab had been involved in the delivery of the H1N1 vaccine.

“We don’t have to reinvent the wheel. We have done this before,” said Merriman. “When the vaccine will be ready, we will be ready.”

COVID-19 hits close to home: many pitch in to help

Everything at our house and the whole apartment building was cancelled for a few weeks. Many thanks to all those thoughtful people who helped us out by delivering groceries and medical supplies. It was much appreciated. A big thank you also to hospital staff, health-care workers and other caregivers for all their help during a pandemic that looms larger every day.

Christmas is not far away, as is the end of another year. It’s going to be a different Christmas season. Just take care.

North Battleford Western Development Museum is hosting their Light Up the Village lights tour open until Jan. 9 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. every day except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. The tour offers a spectacular experience.

Hours of work went into setting up the display, as installers must be careful when working with heritage buildings. Thank to all the sponsors. It’s a good place to take the family for an evening drive.

Besides the museum lights there are also many homes and businesses in the Battlefords lighting up

for theh olidays. Later in December there will be a twinkle tour to take in the show.

I would like to thank my friends of Baljennie for keeping me supplied with what little news I get to report. I have been submitting the Baljennie news for the past 45 years. We all try to keep the little district of Baljennie news in the local newspaper. I started submitted Baljennie news on Jan. 1, 1975. I have enjoyed it all these years.

Can you believe there are only two weeks until Christmas? Of course the 25th is the day we celebrate the birth of our saviour. Never make the mistake of believing that His birth in Bethlehem was His beginning. There always was God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

Because the killing of sheep and lambs as a sacrifice for sins could not be continued, God sent His sinless Son Jesus to this

Earth to be a once-andfor-all sacrifice. Mary, a virgin, conceived of the Holy Spirit and Jesus was born incarnate without sin.

He walked more than 30 years on this Earth without ever sinning.

He went to the cross of Calvary taking the sins of the entire world upon himself.

Because God cannot look upon sin, he had to turn His face away from His own Son for a moment while Jesus took your sins and buried them in the sea of His forgetfulness.

All you need to do is believe this by faith, calling on God for forgiveness.

He who knew no sin , became sin for us. He died, was buried, rose again, ascended back to his Father, where He is interceding and giving you eternal life, if you believe this and call upon Him for salvation.

Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.

Waiting is the last thing I want to do “The grandkids are waiting for Christmas in Edmonton like raging bulls,” Ed told me yesterday. His family there is not able to come to Melville for Christmas. Ed and Ruby can’t go to be with them. His grandkids are checking the mail for presents from Grandpa and Gramma in Saskatchewan.

Ed has told them they could open them when they arrive. They do not have to wait for Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. I hope it all works out for Ed’s family in Edmonton and that the presents arrive before Christmas.

The Advent season calls us to wait for the return of Christ with hope, peace, joy and love. When Jesus was born at Bethlehem, the hope, peace, joy and love of God were given in fulfillment of God’s

promise of His coming Messiah or Savior. Galatians 4:4 states, “But when the fullness of time had come. God sent forth his Son born of woman, born under the law.”

The first Christmas proves that no matter how long it takes, when it comes to God’s promises,

it’s always worth the wait.

Waiting forces us to give up our comfort of being in control and allows God to work the fullness of His time. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, we often were focused on waiting for what was not a matter of life and death. Many felt there are only two times of the year, hockey season and waiting for it. The pandemic means waiting for a vaccine to prevent sickness and death. As I write this, lifesaving vaccines are being developed and approved. It means hope for all people. We pray hope, peace, joy and love will grow to replace pandemic strife.

Hope, peace, joy and

love are often the candles’ names on the Advent Wreath. The wreath represents eternity without beginning and end. Our God is without beginning or end and promises that those who believe or have faith in His Son Jesus Christ will be taken to heaven when Jesus returns to judge the living and the dead. Many seek all the hope, peace, joy and love they can get here on Earth and ignore any thought of God, heaven or hell.

It isn’t that there isn’t hope, peace, joy and love on Earth, but they are balanced or matched with despair, hate, death and grief.

Many doubt and scoff at God and the hope, peace,

joy and love He freely offers in Christ. The question before us is always who we will trust ourselves or God. Who will you trust most and depend on most?

The scoffing about the promised coming of Jesus is always great. Thank goodness God is good at waiting.“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance. The day of the Lord will come like a thief.”

Let us look forward to heaven with trust in Jesus before He returns from heaven and it is too late.2 Peter 3:9-10

Winterlites parade, decorating contest brighten season

Unity experienced some Christmas “normal” with the Winterlites parade on Dec. 3 that brightened up all who experienced it. Thank you to the businesses and individuals who chose to create a float for this parade. I was one of the organizers of this event and have heard enthusiastic thanks from our seniors’ centres for ensuring the parade route passed by these locations.

Thank you also to the businesses who entered the Christmas tree decorating contest and window decorating contest. They have also brightened the COVID-19 Christmas experience.

Thank you to everyone who made contributions either at the “Fill the Truck” initiative at Unity Motor Products or other collection depots around town.

These efforts will go a long way to help make this Christmas a littler merrier for those who need a hand up this year. We also must thank the Secret Santa committee and food bank volunteers, as their efforts are appreciated this time of year.

Christmas mail campaign has been enthusiastically received. Thank you to everyone who took time to drop off ornaments, mail, treats and other items, as well as to those who sent letters and cards in the mail. I have heard back from several seniors’ centres asking to pass along thanks to those who chose to act on this request and to relate how many smiles this campaign has evoked.

The create-a-tree project saw their initial goal of 50 trees surpassed before deadline. Realty Executives team member, Kayla Meredith, and other volunteers, have delivered the mini trees. Long Term Care and Parkview Place say this heart-warming gesture has created smiles and happiness in their locations as residents felt the love from the community.

Unity Credit Union, in their annual service charge cash back rebate, chose to issue a certificate to members to be used at any of the merchants in Unity.

The initiative represents a dividend to members with dual purpose ‑‑ put money back into the business community with members also benefitting from the payout.

While there won’t be an in-person carol festival you still have the opportunity to experience the joy of Christmas music at one of our community churches, but please check in on their capacity requirements and pandemic protocols before attending. Many of these church services are also available online. As well, the Heart to Home Facebook page has renewed a call for performers to share their musical renditions in the theme of Christmas.

Sadly the annual Christmas Service of Remembrance is another COVID-19 casualty. People are encouraged to reach out to their local churches to find in-house services this season or see what they are offering as a safe online option.

The museum fundraiser sponsored by Hollyhock’s Greenhouse is a big hit.

With just six days of school left before Christmas break, they will continue work in their learning journey in spite of this year’s unusual circumstances.

Unity Public School has a number of Christmas spirit days in December including a door-decorating campaign as well as an outdoor sculpture event.

RoJet Contracting have been a big hit on the playground.

Unity Composite High School has had extracurricular activities put on pause by the division. Staff and students are making the last six days of school count before Christmas break.

There is no hockey to report as hockey games were also put on pause, al-

though teams are still practising skill development in groups of eight with mandatory masks at all times, including on ice.

Unity Curling Club is also on pause until the government and Saskatchewan Health Authority deems that they can restart again.

Budgeting for charity ultimately pays Perhaps the greatest benefit of charitable giving is helping others and the way that makes volunteers and donors feel. But there is also a financial benefit to charitable giving. Charitable donations are often tax deductible, and budgeting for such donations can teach people how to properly manage their money.

Donors who want to make the most of their charitable dollars can consider the following tips.

• Stick to one or two causes. Being a “giver” doesn’t mean you have to contribute to every cause that draws your attention. It is important to believe in the cause you’re donating to and that the message and efforts resonate with your values.

This way you can focus your attention directly, and it will not seem like a financial burden. That might require you to narrow your donations down to one or two causes.

• Treat charitable giving as any other monthly bill. Look at giving to charity as a necessity rather than a luxury. Create a recurring “bill” that you pay each month and factor it into your overall spending budget. Some charities may even be able to arrange for automatic deductions from your bank account.

• Set up a specific savings account. Much like you might create a separate account for a Christmas club or vacation savings, create an exclusive account for charitable endeavors. Over time, that account balance will grow and the money can be used for whichever causes you deem fit.

• Donate what you can. You need not donate hundreds of dollars to make a huge difference. Organizations can benefit greatly from small donations. Do not avoid donating because you think your donations are too small to make a difference.

• Find out if your company will match. Ask your employer to match your donations.

Even if they decline, drawing attention to a cause may inspire your bosses and coworkers to donate. Nonprofits benefit greatly from word-of-mouth. Simply talking up a charity to others can make a big impact.

Consider supporting Battlefords Union Hospital (BUH) Foundation by donating ‘In Honour’ or ‘In Memory’ of a loved one for that “hard to buy for” individual. Your support will enhance healthcare at BUH in their name and you’ll receive a charitable tax receipt for your gift. Dependent on the level of the donation, your loved one’s name may be noted on BUH Foundation’s Donor Wall located in the main lobby at BUH. This is a lasting, thoughtful gift, reflecting your respect and good wishes for them. By honouring a loved one this way, it will help to enrich patient care at BUH and we are grateful for your support.
