Raising Awareness The Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan hosted the society’s annual Walk for Memories at NationsWEST Field House Sunday. The walk is hosted to raise awareness of the disease, to show support for those who are afflicted and support for those who care for Alzheimer’s patents. Participants also collect pledges prior to the walk and money raised goes to research into the treatment of the disease and other dementia related illnesses. A total of $10,145 has been raised for the cause in the Battlefords this year. For more photos turn to Page 2. Photo by Craig Beauchemin

This week in ... A look back at the news stories making the pages of the News-Optimist in ...
1987
By Jayne Foster Staff Reporter
• This week in 1987, the $7 million Gainers bacon-processing plant was about to begin production. Hiring was underway for the plant built by Edmonton entrepreneur Peter Pocklington, attracted to Saskatchewan by the provincial government’s offer of grants and loans. Eventually, as Pocklington’s empire faltered, he sold his meat packing business to the Alberta government. It was then acquired by Burns Foods, who sold its pork and processed meat operations to Maple Leaf Foods Inc. in 1996. Maple Leaf’s 330-employee bacon plant in North Battleford closed down in April of 2013. The closure was one of several Maple Leaf Foods closures announced in October 2011 as part of a massive company-wide restructuring across Canada. The plant that once won an award for “best tasting bacon in America” sits empty today. • This week in 1987 also saw a gas war being waged in North Battleford. Prices were as low as 24 cents per litre. • CJNB radio celebrated its 40th birthday this week in 1987.
